Now more than ever we are in a race to the finish line with the enemy to see who will have more souls at the finish. I don’t know if you have noticed, but it appears that the enemy is laps ahead of us. Do you feel the sense of urgency in the atmosphere? We have become desensitized to the cries of our lost sisters and brothers. This is not an indictment but what happened to our witness? Somewhere along the line we have forgotten our first love (Jesus Christ), or we are so busy we just don’t think about it. Let’s reflect. Think back to when we first believed and accepted Jesus Christ as our personal savior. We were so excited, we felt brand new and we wanted everyone to know that we were saved. We couldn’t wait to get to church, and we invited everyone to go with us. We were on fire for the Lord. We purchased a Bible (you know the one with Jesus’ words in red), and some of us even went shopping for new ‘church’ clothes, because after all we had to be equipped and we wanted everyone to see the change in our lives. You remember don’t you? But then, something happened, the thrill of our salvation was wearing off. We got comfortable. We programmed ourselves. Church became a part of our busy schedules. We got caught up with the ministry, but not with kingdom building. Don’t get me wrong after all, we have been loyal. We never miss a service, we attend Bible study, we tithe, we give our offerings, and we support and work in our ministries. Please don’t misunderstand; we should be good stewards. But in our efforts to be good stewards, we somehow forgot that once we were saved, there was more that was required of us, God’s great commission to evangelize. Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:15) You remember don’t you? And yet, we still aren’t reaching the masses. The question is, “How do we reach the masses?” In today’s society we have a lot of resources to help spread the Gospel. Technology is by far one of the greatest resources we can use that is always at our fingertips (hint). Here’s a thought, how

about the next time you stop to post something on Facebook or send a tweet, why not just ask a very simple question, “Are you saved?” Wonder what kind of responses you would get; maybe it would get shared or retweeted. Of course there is the possibility for debate, but that can happen in any arena, don’t let that hold you back. God’s got your back in this one; all He needs you to do is plant the seed. We should remind ourselves of our salvation and where God has brought us from. God has saved us and delivered us from things we don’t want to remember. Whatever we have been saved or delivered from should be our drawing card to reach out to others. Our witness, our testimony should and can draw others to Christ. Our lives should reflect that God is our source and He is the head of our lives and that can draw others to Christ. “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy.” (Psalm 107:2) We can also remind ourselves that we are saved by grace and that God can save anybody. We need to remind ourselves that salvation is free and it is not up to us to pick or choose who should be saved. Remember someone purposed in their heart to share the gospel with you. Chances are there may be someone in your family, someone in those hundreds of friends you have on Facebook, someone on your job, in your neighborhood, or even sitting beside you in church that needs salvation. See if you can win a soul for the Kingdom, heaven rejoices over one soul that has been won for Christ. I Jackie Epps believe you will rejoice as well. Editor-in-Chief www.gracenglorymagazine.org  7

Pastor

Mount

The Historic Hebron Baptist Church

G&G: Pastor Whipple, welcome to Grace & Glory Magazine, it is my pleasure to introduce you to our Grace& Glory family. This month we are so excited to celebrate with you the 90th Church Anniversary of the Historic Mt. Hebron Baptist Church. Pastor Whipple you became the pastor of this church just about three years ago, how does it feel to now be a part of the history of this ninety-year old church? Pastor Whipple: Thank you very much for that warm welcome. I am excited to be a part of the Grace & Glory Family as it continues to keep us connected in the Body of Christ. I am grateful for this time at Mount Hebron and I'm looking forward to the celebration. To be able to serve a church with a ninety year history is truly humbling. Mount Hebron has truly stood the test of time, trials and transitions and because of a relentless faith in God, we have seen many triumphs and we can testify that it was God alone who has brought us this far. G&G: Pastor Whipple, let’s start at the beginning of this journey for you. Would you walk us through the journey that led you to the Historic Mt. Hebron Baptist Church? Pastor Whipple: I am a third generation preacher. My parents are ordained Baptist ministers and my paternal grandfather was a Pentecostal minister. Although this was my lineage I continue to fashion my own Christian journey. Educationally, I am a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. I earned the Masters of Divinity Degree from Wake Forest University Divinity School in Winston-Salem, NC, as well as

8   September September 2017 2017 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 8

the Masters of Science in Church Management from Villanova University in Villanova, PA. I've also earned the Doctor of Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. Obtaining credible and viable theological education is very important to me. Ministry officially began for me in 2001 when I served as Youth Minister Intern at Douglas Memorial Community Church under former Pastor, Dr. Raphael Warnock, who is now Pastor of the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA. I also served as Youth Pastor at Emmanuel Baptist Church in WinstonSalem, NC under Dr. John Mendez as well as an Assistant Pastor at Macedonia Baptist Church of Baltimore City under the late great, Dr. Marvis P. May Sr. My Pastoral career began in 2008 when I was blessed to serve six years as a Pastor in the United Methodist Church. I learned much. I still thank God for Asbury United Methodist Church in White Marsh and people like Sis. Sedonia Johnson and Bro. Lewis Gwynn who were patient with a fledgling Pastor finding his consistent preaching voice. I still believe when it's time to move God will make the sign clear. On Friday, December 12, 2014 I received the phone call from the Diaconate Chair, Deacon Leon Pettaway, of Mount Hebron to begin serving as Pastor and officially began on Wednesday, December 31 at the Watch Night Service. Over the last few years God has stretched Mount Hebron to walk toward innovative ways to operate in ministry in the 21st century. We are only going up from here.

Q&A G&G: Pastor Whipple, to get to know you a little better, what three words would you choose to describe yourself and would you share with us one thing most people would be surprised to know about you? Pastor Whipple: Three words to describe myself: Consistent - Studious - Communicator. One thing most people would be surprised to know about me is that I am the youngest of three sons. Most people would assume otherwise because I have an "old soul." But I have one older brother, Jacinth Whipple, and another preceded me in death, Norman Whipple Jr., who I thank God for and love dearly.

means winning souls for Christ, but it means providing drug dealers an alternative way of earning a living. It means our seniors and children have a safe place to come. It means having a strong sense of identity not dictated by Eastern European ideology. It means cultivating a church that is not just for Sunday mornings. My vision for Mount Hebron is to minister to the generations. Our Vision Statement states: "Enriching families, strengthening ministries and renewing the spirit of human kind through Christ's salvation." We strive toward this daily.

G&G: Pastor Whipple, have there been any challenging areas in connecting with G&G: Pastor Whipple, most pastors a well-established ministry with 90 years have shared with me that ‘preaching of history? G&G: Pastor Whipple, after becoming the pastor and following behind seven other pastors before you, what has been your passion and vision for the Historic Mt. Hebron Baptist Church? Pastor Whipple: My passion for Mount Hebron is that it will be (Front pew left to right; Bro. Jacinth Whipple; Master Jacinth D. Whipple; Dr. a saving station for the Barbara J. G&G: Pastor Whipple, what have been the most rewarding accomplishments in the ministry since you took over as pastor of the church? Pastor Whipple: The most rewarding accomplishment in the ministry since taking over as pastor is being witness to the spontaneous growth. This not only means attendance numbers, but it means spiritual growth. Continued on page 10 www.gracenglorymagazine.org  99 www.gracenglorymagazine.org

When someone learns a new scripture or begins to pray publicly for the first time or invites someone to church, all of these are things that are worth celebrating. G&G: Pastor Whipple, how would you best describe the ministry of the Historic Mt. Hebron Baptist Church? With a church on just about every corner, what do you believe sets this church apart from other churches in the Greater Baltimore community? Pastor Whipple: The uniqueness of Mount Hebron is having the ability to learn as we love unconditionally. We are not afraid to make mistakes, always willing to try for better and are always flexible to the move of the Holy Spirit. G&G: What would you say to that person who perhaps is looking for a church home that would motivate them to come and unite with the Historic Mount Hebron Baptist Church? What would you say to that hard to reach group, the youth and young adults (the millennials)? Pastor Whipple: Pray. I know it sounds cliché, but pray. As you pray, remember there is no perfect church and that church is what you make it. Mount Hebron is a generational congregation. Part of our vision is "enriching families," and that includes millennials. The focus is not a specific age group, the focus is Christ. Grow with us as we are, as our motto states, "Bonded Together Under Christ." Black community, what is the church’s relationship to its surrounding community? What are some of the unmet needs in the community that the church is addressing? Pastor Whipple: We love being connected to the surrounding community. Not only do we have a beautiful relationship with Coppin State University and the Coppin Heights CDC, we utilize those relationships when servicing the community. Our Senior Missionary Ministry has a Food Pantry distribution on the third Saturday. Our Generation Royalty (Youth & Young Adult Ministry) proudly provides school supplies every August. Our United Hands for God (an outreach ministry) serves the Baptist Aged Home, House of Ruth and Roberta's House. We press beyond the four walls of the church and go to where the people are. G&G: Pastor Whipple, historically the Black Church had strong community ties and provided spiritual and political leadership, especially during the Civil Rights Movement; the church was the foundation of the Black community. Do you believe the church still has a voice in the community? Do you see God at work in this community? Pastor Whipple: The Black Church is at a pivotal moment in history. Change is happening around us and we must get back in the lead. As Niebuhr discussed in his book Christ and Culture, the church must lead the culture and not the culture lead the church. The Black Church is getting its voice back and God is working. God is at work in the community when pastors of various backgrounds collaborate for a cause greater than themselves. God is at work when our city moves with dispatch to create jobs for our teenagers. I have a hope that as things turn for the

church history

Founded September 26, 1927, The Historic Mount Hebron Church continues to stand as a spiritual pillar in the Coppin Heights Community of West Baltimore. We were first organized in the home of our founder, Rev. Marshall Flowers and his wife, Hattie on North Arlington Ave. In April 1928, our church moved to the North Poppleton Street location and in April 1933, moved to Pierce Street, where growth continued to happen. Not too soon after in October 1936 there was another move, this time to West Saratoga Street, where our church became incorporated. By 1939 Mount Hebron was composed of seven Deacons, three Trustees and three auxiliaries. This caused another move, one that would be the final move for Rev. Flowers as he transitioned into eternity in 1941. Prior to his passing he positioned Rev. James Matthews as his successor. Rev. Matthews was officially elected as pastor in 1942. Under the leadership of Rev. Matthews Mount Hebron made tremendous progress. More auxiliaries and choirs were organized and connections to the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. and the United Baptist Missionary Convention of Maryland were formed. Because of this great increase and added responsibilities, Rev. Paris S. Thompson was elected Assistant pastor to Rev. Matthews in November 1962. After Rev. Matthews’ transition to eternity, Rev. Thompson was elected pastor in 1968. With Rev. Thompson there was great emphasis on Bible Study, administration and congregational care. His leadership led to the composition of our current location, 2651 West North Avenue. We entered into this sacred space on March 15, 1975. Not too soon after, Rev. Thompson

asked Rev. Bruce Johnson to assist him as Rev. Thompson had become ill. After the passing of Rev. Thompson in 1988, Rev. Johnson was elected the fourth pastor of Mount Hebron in 1989. Expansion commenced with the purchase of a church van and a focus on youth and young adult ministry became the central focus. Rev. Johnson transition into eternity in 1992. In 1994, Rev. Walter W. Brown, Jr. was elected as the fifth pastor. Rev. Brown elevated us; auxiliaries were renamed ministries, there was emphasis on outreach and a youth culture became a stable part of the life of the church. Rev. Brown served until 2002. In 2004 Rev. Gary Swilling was called as our sixth pastor. With Rev. Swilling the emphasis was Bible Study, especially for our seniors. Under his leadership we were able to pay off a debt ahead of schedule. Rev. Swilling served until 2009. Rev. Leonard Ballentine served as interim pastor from 2011 – 2014 where he upheld pastoral responsibilities and worked to keep the church unified in the time of transition. In December 2014 Rev. Dr. Beryl M. Whipple was called as our eighth pastor, a time of new beginnings. With six locations, eight pastors and a myriad of milestones, this is just part of our story and we thank God the best parts have not yet been written. So the churches were strengthened in the faith and increased in number daily. Acts 16:5

UNITY:

Are You Ready To Answer the Call? We live in a society where the strength of the church is diminished or weakened by individual personal gain. It’s a Me, myself and I mentality. The church is at HER best when the people of God come together as one body in Christ for the sole purpose of the Kingdom Agenda. Our society today eliminates the need to have long lasting relationships. Although, in God’s Kingdom His citizenship differs because the Bible tells us that one citizen has dominion over a thousand but two together gives authority over 10k! God multiplies our talents when we come together on one accord; and that places FEAR in the enemy’s camp. Satan’s political move in God’s physical house is to DIVIDE and to Conquer. 1. Satan doesn’t want the people of God to operate in oneness. 2. Satan doesn’t want the Body of Christ to agree. 3. Satan doesn’t want togetherness in the same place. 2017! Let’s Start Being REAL WITH GOD and ourselves! Beloved you will find that today will BEGIN to be the BEST DAYS of your LIFE WHEN YOU SAY YES TO GOD!

to your good health

Life is filled with new adventures and experiences that we can choose to embrace. Not only are these fun-filled and exciting but also at times they may become taxing and can weigh us down emotionally, physically and spiritually. Knowing when to engage or to walk away from some of life's options is not always easy. Weighing the pros and cons is not always convenient yet may be necessary depending on the circumstances of our situation. Often we want to skip steps to reach our goals and to speed up the arrival to our destiny. The process can become more than we imagined and we may still be no closer to reaching a decision. This can become stressful and can cause us to rush when we should wait and jump to a conclusion when we should give it more thought. Our decision making process can sometimes become overwhelmed with doubt and fear when it looks like what was a blessing is now a burden. It is times like these that cause us to worry to the point of anxiety or become so concerned that we become depressed. Whether it is a time of rejoicing or a time of transition, the Book of Proverbs has several recommendations we can follow when we don’t know what to do. First, we can listen to what God is telling us. “Come and listen to my counsel. I’ll share my heart with you and make you wise” (Proverbs 18   September 2017 | Grace&Glory

1:23). God wants to communicate with us and through prayer and scripture reading with the Holy Spirit’s guiding us we can be made wise. Following the counsel of God is much more reliable than reasoning on your own strength. Each of us is limited but God is infinite and can come up with more creative ideas and solutions to our needs and desires. Secondly, be honest with yourself and God. “He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity” (Proverbs 2:7). God wants us to be open about our issues and not lie when we are in need of guidance. God can handle the truth and wants us to make our requests known to Him and He will help us walk in His ways. Finally, we can always be humble when we don’t know what to do and try God’s way instead of our own. We can do better when we give our worries to God and, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:5-6). We may not know what to do but God always does. We can be certain that we are on the right track when Dr. Carla Debnam, we let God have control of Founder, our situations, our fears and Renaissance Christian our dreams. Counseling Center

woman’s perspective

I don’t know about you my sister but I absolutely love being a woman. Femininity is something to be celebrated! When a woman comes into the room, you notice her appearance and if you happen to be close to her you notice her fragrance. There are so many ways to enhance your scent. There are scented lotions, sprays, scrubs, perfume, etc. Many of us have a combination of these and wear our favorites consistently. Whatever your favorites may be, isn’t it wonderful being complimented for the scent you chose? This made me think about the spiritual parallel. When we approach God, are our spirits fragrant in His nostrils? Does He enjoy our scent?

Fragrant Relationships - Birds of a feather flock together. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying before. It is incredibly true. The interesting thing is even if they don’t start out birds of a feather, if they stay around each other long enough they will become birds of a feather. The relationships you have can draw you closer to God. Are your relationships pleasing to God? Is He happy with the relationships that you currently have? It is something to consider as you allow people into your life. We must ask ourselves will I still be pleasing God in this relationship.

“Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.” Ephesians 5:1-2 NKJV. From this passage we are able to see illustrated what pleases our God and brings a sweet smell to His nostrils. He desires for us to imitate Him and display His character in our daily lives. As we display His love to others, we draw them to our savior. By this people will know that we are His. We have a God who looks on the intent of our hearts and is pleased when our desires, actions, behaviors bring Him glory. We can ensure that we send up a pleasant aroma when we possess:

Fragrant Habits - Our character defines us as godly women. Our habits create our character. What types of habits govern your daily lives? Is God pleased with the things that consume your lifestyle? Are you habitually pleasant? Are you consistently diligent, faithful, and trustworthy? Does your reputation bring glory and honor to God? I talked earlier this year about being Proverbs 31 women. As virtuous women, we create a godly life through godly habits. We must remember that in our every action we either validate or discredit God.

Fragrant Attitudes - Everything starts on our insides. Everything we do and are begins with our attitude, which is our mental position. The Bible tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, which fully illustrates just how important our minds are. We live out of our minds and our attitude is a mirror reflection of what is in our minds. As godly women we are called to please God in our attitudes. We must submit our emotions and thoughts to the Lord so that our heart’s reflections and attitudes are pleasing.

Let's continue to be fragrant women, both naturally and spiritually. The fragrant woman leaves the essence of her scent wherever she goes. Her aroma is left on the hearts of those she encounters. Especially in her interaction with God; He is Tiffany Bethea pleased with the aroma that her life She-EO Life Mentor sends up in His nose.

single life

were able to overlook each other's issues to create a child, so find it in your heart again to overlook them. I am in no way suggesting that you place your child/children in an environment to be hurt emotionally or physically. I am suggesting that you work with counselors, mediators, family, and friends to create a safe environment for your child/children to see the parent who is not the primary care taker. Don’t allow your bitterness towards the other parent to make you blind to the needs of your child/children. I am in no way saying that this is going to be easy, but your child/children deserve your effort to make it work. "Making it work" will require someone to be the mature, bigger person who may have to apologize, forgive, and not always speak his or her mind. In Romans 12:17-18 (NIV) the word of God instructs us, “Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” We can do more harm than good when we react out of emotions. Our emotions are definitely a place where the enemy has the ability to create chaos if we are not submitted to God. Remember that both parents provide different things that the child/children need to assist them with being whole. It is important for children to know both sides of who they are in order for them to understand why they think and act the way they do. Children can suffer internal turmoil and identity crisis if they are not aware of who they are from both sides of their family. Think about how many times you have heard someone say that you look or act just like one of your parents. If you have a relationship with both of your parents, you have someone to whom you can compare yourself. Lacking a relationship with a parent has the ability to cause you to feel incomplete. The goal of parenting is to raise emotionally and physically well-rounded children who can grow into responsible adults. Here are a few tips that can assist you in being successful at co-parenting: Let Go of the Past – 1st Peter 2:1 We all have made and will continue to make mistakes, as they are a part of this journey called life. Now is the time to let go of all anger and bitterness for your child/children. Only when we let go of the past are our hands open to hold our future. Being a parent brings challenges that you never imagined you would have to face. No one makes single parenting a goal, but it can happen to anyone. If you happen to be a single parent, co-parenting can be one of the biggest challenges to navigate through. I really wish parents could have a standard formula to follow so that children do not have to endure the battle between their parents. It is so important for parents to understand that children deserve love from both of their parents. I am sure someone is thinking, "But you don’t know my ex. He or she is selfish, irresponsible, negative, or manipulative and the list can go on”. My response to you is that, at one point in the relationship, you 22   September September2017 2017||Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 22

Forgive One Another – Ephesians 4:32 God has forgiven you so now it is time to forgive yourself and forgive the other parent. Holding on to un-forgiveness will make you bitter and hurt your family. Use Each Other’s Strengths – 1st Peter 4:10 Each of you bring something different to the table. Don’t focus on what the other person is lacking but try to highlight the good qualities that they possess. If you don’t have a good relationship with the mother or father of your children, I encourage you to seek out the needed help to resolve your issues. As my pastor, Apostle Dr. Karen Bethea said, “Children should not be in a tug of war because of the adult issues between their mom and dad.” The changes that you make today will benefit your child/children in ways that they may not understand now, but they will appreciate you for it later.

man talk

Through the lens of a storm, and as a follow-up to last month’s column, be encouraged. There is more to your life than going through. DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES As individuals, we have different backgrounds and lived experiences. However, despite our diversity, God is committed to meeting each of us at the point of our need, and revealing things to us in ways that are relevant and meaningful. For this reason, the New Testament Gospels often recount the same events from varied perspectives. As each record accentuates a point of view that would have otherwise been lost in a singular retelling that is both incomplete and insufficient, reading each account provides the most comprehensive understanding of what actually happened. Recorded in Matthew (8:23-27), Mark (4:35-41), and Luke (8:22-25), the disciples encountered a storm while travelling from Galilee to the other side. As the winds were blowing and they feared for their lives, Matthew writes, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” Similarly, Luke records these words: Master, Master, we’re going to drown! The retelling that is captured in Mark, however, is markedly different. Although each writer depicted the disciples as men who were desperate for divine intervention, Mark’s unknown author suggests that they were also slightly annoyed with Jesus as they said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” Whereas Matthew and Luke focused on what they wanted Jesus to do, Mark questioned Jesus. Whereas the cries recorded by Matthew and Luke assumed that Jesus could save them, Mark wasn’t necessarily doubting his ability to rescue them from the perils of the storm, but rather whether he cared enough to do so. In other words, I know that you can, but will you do this for me?

of this truth ourselves? After we’ve weathered storms with Jesus, and have personally experienced the supernatural power of God, nothing can challenge the reality of who God is. THE OTHER SIDE OF THROUGH As always, what we go through is never about us. Therefore, the significance of the storm is not that the disciples made it to the other side, but all that happened on the other side. In other words, the storm was less about the disciples than those whom they were destined to meet on the other side. In fact, not only did Jesus feed a crowd of more than 5,000 with a little boy’s lunch (Mark 6:33-44), but the same disciples who were amazed that he could handle the storm, also performed extraordinary deeds (Mark 6:13). So not only does Jesus have supernatural power, but because we know him, we too, have the authority to positively affect those around us (John 14:12)! II Corinthians 4: 17: For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long... As it was for the disciples, our present troubles are simply storms that we must go through. But here’s the good news: storms are temporary. And although we might not realize it while we’re going through, when we get to the other side, and meet people who need to experience the life-changing love of God, we’ll know that it was worth it.

A CRISIS OF FAITH Despite the differing, but not conflicting, perspectives, the response from Jesus was the same and showed that the disciples were experiencing a crisis of faith (Matthew 8:26-27; Mark 4:40-41; Luke 8:25). Like many of us, especially as we’re going through storms of our own, the disciples were surprised that Jesus had everything under control. Despite walking and talking with him, and witnessing the many miracles he performed for others, when they needed Jesus to do something for them their belief was clouded with unbelief (Mark 9:24). Parenthetically, if others are critical of you because you’re unsure of how you’ll get through challenging situations, be encouraged; faith and fear are not incompatible. More accurately, faith is the triumph over fear. DIRECT EXPERIENCE Although the miracles that Jesus had already performed showed unbelievers that he was the Son of God, they were also significant for the 12 men whom he called to help change the world. Moreover, because everything that we experience prepares us for what’s coming next, the storm was not the end; but it was necessary so that the disciples could effectively minister to those on the other side. Even today, how can we encourage others to trust God through difficult seasons if we have not done so ourselves? How can we tell others to have faith in God if we have not overcome our uncertainty about what God will do for us? How we can tell others that God cares for them if we have not been convinced 30   September September 2017 2017 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 30
