Sometimes it comes flowing over you like a soft, cool breeze Sometimes it hits you in the face like a bucket of ice water Sometimes it creeps upon you and takes you by surprise like a friendly prankster Sometimes it comes rushing in like an avalanche, you see it coming but all you can do is brace yourself Sometimes it’s like a terrible headache - totally unbearable Sometimes a dark abyss, endless worry and problems Sometimes a sunny day full of bright hope and promise Sometimes too flat, like a mug of beer left too long on the shelf Sometimes it’s like a well worn pair of shoes - comfortable Sometimes too fast, sometimes too slow Sometimes too harsh, sometimes too soft Sometimes too dark, sometimes too bright Sometimes too little, sometimes too light Sometimes Sometimes Sometimes… THAT’S LIFE

My Dear Mentor & Mother
My dearest Aunty, Charmaine Andria James.
On September 17, 2022, we celebrated you and recounted precious memories that we shared. We laughed, we cried, we loved, and you lived, but. On September 18, 2022, just a day after, I was struck, torn down and broken as I watched you fade. I felt it stop. I heard it end. Your life, that you dedicated so much of to me, to us, gone so abruptly. It was all so swift, so sudden, so painful, so brutal and cruel. If I had known that it was the last time, I would forever hold you. I would’ve held you a little tighter. There was so much I did not get to thank you for, so much I didn’t get to say, but know that I love you. There was no one like Charmaine James. You were a loving, no-nonsense woman of God.
Your voice, your dance, your smile, your talent, your anointing, your love for God and His people. You have left an impact on so many lives whether as a teacher or as a woman of God. You were one of a kind and I will love you until the stars fall from the sky. I will love you forever.
Goodbye Aunty Pun, My Manual, My Mentor, My Motivator, My Mother! “Hasta que nos encontremos de nuevo” (untill we meet again), With Love from your daughter, Dana-Lee Andrews.
My Dearest Mom-tie Pun
You are my truest and purest Love. The one I am most certain about, is the one who believes in me, supports me, prays for me and is honest with me. You have poured so much into me that sometimes my action, my wit and my preference match yours. Your method of discipline was your way or no way, good thing your way was always the way to go. God, education and good manners were the primary focus as these core values are the recipes that have certainly nurtured me into who I am today. Growing up, we could never be absent from Sunday morning, Sunday night or Tuesday night services even if you were not able to be there. It was a must that we were at church and that we were active members. Likewise we could not be absent from school, be it bad weather or illness, there were no days off, even if the lunch money was short.
I carry you with me everywhere every day, I talk about you more than I even talk to you. Everybody knows that you are my ‘kryptonite’, when I am stubborn, wrong or fall below your standard, “mind mi call yuh auntie” they would say or “auntie Pun waa si yuh” and those words alone would bring me back to discipline and order. You really drilled it in my head, ‘Chan education is the only way out of poverty, “just tek unnu book,” and I did just that. “Yes girl, first in the family to do it!” you said beaming with satisfaction that I have broken the barrier to pursuing and completing my master’s degree. I did it for you Auntie Pun, I wanted to give in so many times, but I had a constant reminder that I am capable and I have a consistent support system in you. I did it so that I could be in better standing to support you the way you have always supported me.
I have concealed within me some gems you have spoken, they have become my mantras: “Learning means a change in behaviour,” with these words in mind, I have learned to apply my teachings, to be assertive and to evolve. “You’re not an adult until you are independent” is one I constantly remind myself to tell my children as it gave me an extra drive to thrive for ambition and success. “You must know enuh Chan” is the one to remind me to check with my conscience. This is her way of saying, is this in line with what you were taught, is it pleasing to God, and what are the consequences?
Happiness keeps you sweet, Trails keep you strong, Sorrow keeps you human, Sickness keeps you humble, Success keeps you growing, Jehovah keeps you going

You are the first person I would call when Bexy or Steph and I had a disagreement, and I was never wrong to you. Our bond grew tighter as I became your administrative assistant and your banker, making the calls, filling out forms, and processing the transactions. I tried my best never to miss a call, as most times I knew it was an administrative duty.
You always looked forward to us coming home on holidays or occasions. “Kaka, unnu fat tho, wah unnu a eat a town” was the official greeting as you opened up your arms to hug us. Auntie Pun, you are my rock, my purpose, my very foundation that has now crumbled under my feet. I have fallen, I am listless without you. You were my biggest motivation in this life, now where do you leave me? Who will approve my decisions? You left right in the middle of living our dreams. I love you endlessly, my favourite girl, my Mom-tie Pun.
Chanise Morris
My Dear Mother
You may not have given birth to me, but you gave me life. Almost everything about me reflects you. Who I am I credit to you, to your beauty, to your soul, to your sacrifices.
The curve in my smile, from the humour that flows through my heart. The flare in my dress, from the way you taught me modesty. The brilliance of my fingers, from the summers I was sentenced to a prison of ten books, having to submit a report on each when you would return from your overseas trip. The sophistication of my thoughts, in every situation, from how you taught me to be careful, to be vigilant, to observe and to learn. The rasp in my tone, as you taught me how to be strong, even when I am not sure, be confident, and never assume I’m less than anyone in any room. You have taught me, that if I remain below, I will be looked down on, but I must rise about, so that I may be looked up to… emulated… as I pray to emulate you… I pray to emulate your strength, your vigour, your selflessness, your love, your care, your gifts, and your worship. Thank you for every morning you woke all three of us up to kneel before God, teaching us how to pray, and how to live a life of worship before a worthy King. Because now you are gone, all we have is the prayer we prayed, all we have is God whom you taught us to pray to.
You left us shattered…, but we are in the hands of grace. So though broken, we are together, for the love that you left us, binds us, the prayers that you prayed, covers us, your life, heals us. All the favour that precedes us, has come from the favour that was on you, solely for your kindness. I will love you until eternity.
I will carry you in my soul, in the deepest parts of my heart. I will carry you in every breath, in every morning, in every song, in every praise. I will carry you. I will tell my children about their grandmother, the most beautiful girl in the world. I wil teach them your standards. I’ll let them hear your voice. I will let them know about you, that they too will come to love you and want to be like you. May I never forget how even in your last despair, when I wanted to make a fuss… you held on to my hand, and you said to leave it… I will carry this with me... I will walk away from chaos, and controversies. I will choose peace… I will choose God... I will choose you…
Until we meet again my queen..., hopefully by then your girls would have lost a few pounds, as you’d gimmick about every time you’d see us.
I love you forever Aunty Pun. Your name is imprinted on my heart❤ Rest in eternal Peace! With love, Stephanie Morris.
In Him put your trust, He’ll trample the enemy to dust, Never fear! Jehovah Shamah is always there, Trust Him, you won’t be disappointed, He says touch not the Lord’s anointed, Keep your hands clean and your heart pure, So of God’s defence you can be sure

Charmaine Andria James “Pun” as she was commonly known., was also known as Maggie by close family and friends. I remember when my mother came from the hospital with her, as a child, I was mesmerized as she was one of the prettiest individuals I had ever seen. Growing up, she was very reserved, she would prefer to be entertained rather than take part in the entertaining. She developed a love for books which we inherited from our father. She took reading to a different level, as she read any and everything. As long as there is light, she would be reading. She never got into any trouble because she understood and obeyed the rules.
During her high school years, her love for reading gave birth to writing short poems, scripts and short stories. Her writing entailed her love for life and the lessons it taught us. She expressed her thoughts and emotions through words. There are so many precious moments that have become golden memories. I remembered the best summer we ever had when our father brought us a bag of books from a bookmobile by the library, we read until we were drunken. We discussed and exchanged books, we were definitely in our happy place.
I really miss our little discussions with the Bible as she would quote scriptures and would expound on them. She would smile and often remark, “same suh it guh”. When things would bother me or upset me, I could come to her and vent. It felt good to hear her defend and protect us. She was always on our side. She was always concerned about us and were not afraid to let us know. Oh, my sister, our private moments, our little secrets and our discussions have become treasured memories. She would come to sit on my bed and with the very sound of “Lanette you know say”, I knew something interesting was coming after. She always looked for ways to be of help to us or someone. She always enjoyed my cooking especially if it’s pork.
It was during her time in college that she got saved. She developed a love for the Lord which shaped and fashioned her adult life. This relationship with God taught her to live the two greatest commandments “love the Lord with everything within you and love your neighbour as yourself”. As a teacher, these words were applied in every area of her profession. She has left an indelible mark, spiritually, mentally and physically upon every life that came in contact with her. Many of us have also benefited from her excellent knowledge of being a Sunday School teacher. Over the years, she has blossomed into a woman of integrity. The quiet reserved girl has become a woman, a prayer warrior, a woman of valour, a woman who wasn’t afraid to stand for righteousness and honesty. A woman who was not afraid to speak her mind and not afraid to show her true self. She loved selflessly, she gave generously, she helped compassionately and prayed fervently. She was Pun, she was Maggie, she was Charmaine Andria James.
She was God’s choice. She fathered and mothered these three girls as if they were from her own womb. She was chosen by God to be their parent, for He knew they would grow up in the fear and admonition of the Lord. For He knows the thoughts He thinks toward His children. God always has a plan. So many of us and He needed a beautiful one, so he picked the prettiest one. We are happy knowing that you knew you were loved, and well-loved, you heard it, you felt it. We are happy to know that you knew we appreciated you. We are happy that you were part of us. That part can never be taken away. Your life was celebrated before you passed. Your children, Bexy, Chan and Stephanie know what you stood for and have inherited a legacy of life lessons from you.
Favour is deceitful and beauty is vain but a woman that feareth the Lord shall be praised. Many daughters have done virtuously but Pun, Maggie, Charmaine you have excelled them all. You will forever be in our hearts.

Dear Missionary
Missionary Charmaine James was a virtuous yet graceful woman of elegance and character. She was the perfect example of “follow me as I follow Christ” which became an inspiration to many members of the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ. Her words sometimes were strong, sometimes calm but it was just enough to bring inspiration, hope and life to any situation that the church or an individual was faced with. She was a very optimistic person who guided many young and old skillfully, nurtured many destinies, encouraged those who felt like giving up and strengthened the feeble and weak ones. In all of this, there was never a dull moment around her.
There were days when she shared her testimonies to motivate us as warriors as she spoke of the many bulls that have compassed her; “strong bulls of Bashan have beset me”, or she would have spoken of the one that comes from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah.., this one who is glorious in His apparel, travelling in the greatness of His strength “I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.” Or it was just one of her favourite songs that she would dance to in the isles of glory such as “He poured in the oil and the wine it was the oil that restoreth my soul”. In whatsoever form we crossed paths, we are sure that there was a major impact that she left on our lives. We the members of Remnant Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic can truly say we have lost a stalwart in the gospel of Christ, a leader and a general indeed.
The memory and legacy of the late Charmaine Andria James will live on through her beloved family and the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic community.
Farewell, beloved sleep on and take your rest.
Tribute to the Life of Sister Charmaine James
The Pastor, Board of Officers and members of the Holiness Born Again Church Of Jesus Christ Apostolic, extend sincere condolences to her immediate and extended family, church and school community, the community in which she resided, her friends and wellwishers. Loss and tragedy are twin heartaches no one is willing to welcome or even want to experience, all wish to avoid them, they are however inevitable. Sister Charmaine James was a woman of strength and unquestionable competence in many spheres of life, yet quiet and unassuming.
She possessed a generous and encouraging heart. Was caring and used her quiet strength to empower, not just her immediate family, but those young minds entrusted to her, during her thirty years of teaching and mentoring career. She can be, described as an extraordinary human being, a rare and one-of-a-kind model. Sister Charmaine attended this assembly for years and was instrumental, along with her sister, Missionary James-Reid, in writing and preparing literary pieces for the speech choir to present at church functions, be it youth conventions or general church functions.
Like many in her family, Sister Charmaine had a passion for ministry and so along with her love for writing, she loved to sing, and so it was no surprise when she accepted the call to serve as a choir member, a position she held with great pride. She was very poetic, possessed a charming smile and was a peacemaker- “blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God”. She was a child of God.
Today you may feel sad, and angry and may even dare to ask why, but rest assured that God knows your pain, and as you release your anguish through tears, cling to God’s promises, hold on to hope, that Charmaine is now free. The deluge and depravity of this world can no longer impact her life. Weep if you must, but always bear in mind the shared joys and the precious hope that you will one day see her again in glory land.
She now rests in peace and God’s light perpetually shines on her.
HBAC Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland, JM.

I was in your favourite store and it dawned on me, that you don’t need earthly possessions anymore, you’re with our heavenly father now. Living without you my sister, my friend life is just quite not the same you left so suddenly. I feel so vacant without you, if only I could have one more chance to see you, it wouldn’t be enough. I know with all the love I have for you; I don’t want to say goodbye. Whenever I talk or reminisce about how you could make me laugh, encourage me and always brighten my day. Know that I am proud of you, I will always cherish and honour you. I believe that you loved me I am convinced that you can still see me and will always be by my side. Your memory is a precious treasure of which I’ll never part. Thank you for being my true friend. –Christine Lai
If we were to sum up our lives, you have been a part of every ebb and flow that life has afforded. No words or kindness or playful banter has been missed. No expression of love has gone unnoticed. We have left it all in the arena of our lives. Our memories remain the keeper of our peace. We are not sure how they will tell your story, but we know how the story goes. No distance too far to travel, no possession too great to share, no burden too heavy to carry, our every need has been filled. We know not emptiness because of you.
– Stephanie Mitchell
Tribute to the Late Charmaine Andria James
On behalf of the Minister of Education and Youth, the Honourable Fayval Williams, Regional Director, Dr Michele Pinnock and the entire staff of Region 4, I express my deepest sympathy to the family, colleagues and friends of our distinguished teacher, Ms Charmaine James. Ms James gave 30 years of sterling service to the education sector and in particular to Petersfield High School. She gave willingly of herself and her resources in the service of a grateful nation. She spent all her teaching years at Petersfield High School, first as a librarian and after formal training, as a teacher of English and Spanish.
Ms James was a teacher extraordinaire who was actively involved in the life of the school. In 2012, she was appointed senior teacher with responsibility for student registration. It therefore meant, she spent almost all her summer holidays at school. She was integral in sports activities and spiritual upliftment. She was considered to be the mediator of conflicts among staff and students. She was passionate about student achievement, particularly in the improvement of literacy among the boys. She went above and beyond in building their reading capacity.
As Education Officer with responsibility for Petersfield High School, I have had the opportunity to observe her Spanish classes. The students were the centre of her lessons and she catered to the needs of all her students. She carried out her tasks with grace, humility, passion and purpose. It is said that wherever a beautiful soul has been, there is a trail of beautiful memories. This holds true for Ms James. She will always be remembered for the indelible mark that she has left on the entire school community. We are grateful to God for having shared her with us. To staff and students, I encourage you to cherish the memories and be inspired by the life that she has lived. To her family, trust in the Lord, and find solace that He alone can give. Rest assured that God will be with you during this very difficult period.
In the words of an unknown author, Ms James is a success- as she has left the world better than she found it; She has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it, and looked for the best in others and gave the best she had.
I stand in agreement with the word in Psalm 116:15 that says “precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” Rest well, my colleague. I will never question the will of the Lord. I trust Him enough to know that He knows best. May her soul rest in peace. Descansa en paz, senorita!

TRIBUTE TO THE LATE CHARMAINE JAMES, SPANISH TEACHER OF PETERSFIELD HIGH SCHOOL
“In the time of your life, live — so that in that good time there shall be no ugliness or death for yourself or for any life your life touches. Seek goodness everywhere, and when it is found, bring it out of its hiding place and let it be free and unashamed.” These profound words by American playwright William Saroyan encapsulate the awesome woman Charmaine James was. She embodied God’s goodness, love and peace which she demonstrated in every area of her life.
Ms James dedicated thirty rewarding years of unwavering service to Petersfield High School. She initially served as a librarian and later as a member of the academic staff where she taught English Language and Spanish. In her earlier years, she also taught Religious Education. Some of her former students remember her being thoughtful, encouraging, jovial, humble, kind, helpful and an exceptional motivator. Indeed, she was a safe Harbour for her students, who in turn, loved her. She was able to use her experiences coupled with her practical wisdom to positively mould countless young minds throughout the years and they have been blessed with the privilege of knowing her.
As a stalwart of this noble institution, Ms James was the epitome of a devoted, inspiring, passionate, committed and hard-working teacher, colleague and friend. Ms James served on several committees and projects. She headed the Spanish Department as the longest-serving Spanish teacher at the school. She was also in charge of the registration committee and head of the school’s annual summer programme. Being a woman with strong moral principles, with the hope of instilling positive values and attitudes in young people, she became a staff advisor for the Integrity Club and a member of the Guidance Committee. She also assisted on the committee for Spiritual Emphasis Week, doing her part as one of God’s ambassadors. Ms James truly exemplified the scripture in Proverbs 31:26 that said
“ She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
Ms James will always be remembered for her selflessness, and her willingness to assist her colleagues and students, even outside of the school environment. She was always committed to helping her students, even up to the very last moment of her life, she pushed to help them. She was a role model to young girls within her community and she became an icon whom they could be proud of.
Ms James was a true confidante, and easy to talk to. Her smile was captivating and her witty remarks often had the staff room erupting in gut-wrenching laughter. She did not tolerate disrespect or insubordination of anyone around and never hesitated to correct others who did. She used her Godly principles to inspire and encourage both the young people as well as colleagues with whom she came in contact.
Earlier this year Ms James came up with the concept of ‘Twin Day’ where teachers were paired and expected to dress in similar outfits on one designated day. Her idea was to bring back the camaraderie and togetherness among the staff and it certainly did. Throughout her years of service to this institution, she proved to be a woman of indomitable spirit. This helped in fostering and maintaining an environment where learning and teaching can be mutually beneficial.
As a school family, we are happy that we could have shown our appreciation to her for the thirty years of committed service to this institution at an awards service earlier this year. Ms James is gone from our sight but never from our hearts and minds. Her thoughtful spirit will linger and impress upon us to live meaningful lives while we are still here. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
