arlton Hemsley Smith, 83 received his call to return ‘Home ‘from his earthly abode in Lauderhill, Florida, on Saturday, October 14, 2017. Carlton was born from the union of the late Jane Ricketts and Leslie Smith. His birth on Wednesday February 14, 1934 in Little London, Westmorland, Jamaica W.I., coincided with a total lunar eclipse as the heavens declared the glory of God. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon hides behind the earth. “Hiding in thee, hiding in thee, thou bless rock of ages I’m hiding in thee.’ This heavenly display was to characterize the life of Carlton Smith. The second of four children, he attended Little London Secondary School and graduated in 1951. He started worshipping as a teenager at Grange Hill Baptist Church where he became a member of the church’s choir. He worked in the Agriculture Industry as a driver at The Frome Sugar Estate for five years. In 1960, Carlton relocated to Newton St. Elizabeth, where he continued to work in the in the industry at Appleton Estate and Aquaculture (a subsidiary of Jamaican Boilers). In 1968, at 34 years old, Carlton Hemsley Smith was transformed from the Kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of Light as he accepted baptism in the name of Jesus. Shortly afterwards he received the Holy Ghost, accompanied with glossolalia as the Spirit gave utterance. His conversion marked the genesis of a plethora of activities of God’s kingdom on earth, specifically in the Shiloh Apostolic Church in Newton, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica W.I., where he was spiritually reborn. After his conversion his life was forever hidden in Christ, as the moon was hiding behind the earth at his birth. Paul’s declared: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live not of myself but by the faith of the son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” This statement is truly applicable to Pastor Smith’s life. This man’s life was not a normal, from his conversion until his death he lived an austere life as directed by the Holy Ghost. As a Sunday School Teacher he instructed people in the way of the Lord; he was also the Choir Director. Elder Smith loved to get in the water and baptized people in the name of Jesus; like John the Baptist, he was a Baptizer. Additionally, he served as Youth President. As he continued to excel in the ministry under unction of the Holy Ghost he was ordained an Elder and at the age of 45, he was appointed the Assistant Pastor of the Church under the leadership of Bishop Nevis Rowe. He was an obedient, humble servant who obeyed his Pastor as her served the Lord and the saints of Newton. His best friend and now Pastor of the church in Newton Pastor Cawley, spoke about him glowing terms. He said Elder Smith loved exceptionally; he loved the Lord, he loved the gospel, he loved the saints and he love going the extra mile for the brethren and the Lord.

Elder Smith sought God for a companion and God showed him the lovely Missionary Mercella Loney; he obeyed God’s direction, a short and blissful courtship endued and on November 19, 1967 Carlton and Mercella were joined in holy matrimony. This heaven-made marriage produced 6 children. In September 1986 God called Missionary Mercella to higher service but that left Elder Smith bereft and heart broken. Through God’s strength upon which he was totally reliant and with six children depending on him he had to move forward. Elder Smith migrated to the United States in March 1987 and became a member of First United Church of Jesus Christ (Apostolic) in Brooklyn, NY under the Pastorate of Bishop Leslie J. Barnes in his assignment in New York, he continued to display the qualities of a son of god, loving, caring and compassionate. While in New York he met the lovely Missionary Cinderella Clarke. They moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and were united in holy matrimony in December 26, 1987. They took fellowship at First United COJC (Apostolic) under the Pastorate of Bishop Charles C. Mullings. In this assignment he preached and taught the Word of God with authority and knowledge. His display of Godly qualities, standard of holiness and respect for his Pastor continued to be the hallmark of his pilgrimage. Elder Smith and his and wife moved to Bethel United Church in Fort Lauderdale where he later became the Pastor of that Church. He continue in that assignment until his death. He served with apostolic dignity in that capacity for 22 years. He was a strong defender of the Oneness Apostolic persuasion. His knowledge of the scripture was phenomenal; he knew the Word and he lived by the Word. At Bethel he demonstrated the ability to be faithful and patient. He often said, “He will let nothing or anyone come between he and his Savior to prevent him from going to heaven”. He demonstrated a dogged determination to hold on to the gospel as it was first preached to him. His behavior was typical Shiloh congregants who stood for holiness, and respect for leadership. He followed the maxim. “Called to be saint;” and was the personification of a true saint of God. He left to cherish his memories and to walk in his footsteps: His lovely wife of 30 years, Evangelist Cinderella Smith, two sister: Hazel McIntyre & Verica Davis; nine children: Delroy, Zethro, Patrick, Rylene, Verica, Yvette, Elaine, Dwayne, and Hugh; thirty four grandchildren: Akelia, Simms, Simonetta, Christopher, Shanar, Kamar, Nora, Othniel, Toussant, Dwayne Jr., Shanice, Brian, Sharifa, Kevin, Keyonda, Brandon, Davian, Jonathan, Shavan, Chanel, Dominique, Dashawn, Jody, Kirk, Yatasha, Keisha, Raven, Kacie, Krystan, Mia, Sade, Natalie, Elijah, and Ethan. Twelve great grandchildren: Nathaniel, Natalie, Noah, Comfort, Llaah, Areia, Mark Anthony, Brianna, Ashanti, Brooklyn, Aalyah and Kennie; a multitude of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives, friends and his beloved church family.

Forgiving

Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in the center of decisions he makes, seeking counsel for every direction he takes. His principles strong, with no compromise. No hidden agendas, masquerades, or disguise. A firm guiding hand at the opportune time. A shoulder to cry on, a poetic rhyme. With loyalty and trust, ambition, and pride, He stands on his faith, committed to his bride.

Courageous

Knowledgeable

Praise the Lord saints and friends. To the Smith’s family, I join you in sorrow at the passing away of my pastor and brother, Pastor Carlton Smith. Although my heart is broken by his departure, I rejoice with the heavenly hosts that he has transitioned over to glory land. Pastor Smith was a faithful leader who will always remain in my heart and I will always look at the life he lived as an example of how faithful Christians ought to live in humility and peace. Jesus said “Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the Earth”. Pastor Smith’s example of meekness will forever live in my memories. His inheritance is far greater than the Earth since he went home to glory to live with the Lord forever. Please accept my sincere condolences for the void left in our hearts and rest assured that since Jesus called our pastor home, He will fill our heart with great comfort and love to keep us. The Lord’s timeclock struck and angels were dispatched to summon home my beloved pastor and friend, Pastor Carlton Smith. The Lord knoweth them that are His and He refuse to allow Pastor Smith to remain on Earth and suffer. His everlasting mercies cried out for the opening of the gateway to heaven although it means certain death to life on Earth. Pastor Smith, I miss you. You are an inspiration of righteousness to those who would live holy in this life. I will always remember your passion for holiness and the word of God and especially those old time songs of Zion that you always use to sing. Precious in the eyes of the Lord are the death of His saints. Holy greetings to all in the name of Jesus Christ my Lord and King. I always loved Pastor Smith and his faithfulness in serving as pastor at Bethel United Church in Fort Lauderdale. Pastor Smith is a man of God and he loved the church and the saints. He always showed compassion and visited the sick even when he was not well. Sometimes he visits me when I am sick and later I found out that he was also sick but he never complains that he’s not feeling well.

It is so hard to see a loved one migrate from their homeland, leaving their family behind to move and live at another place that is far away, but sometimes this is what occurs in life. These migrations often leave families with great sorrow and sadness until that memorable day when they are reunited once again as the other family members eventually migrate to that same place which would become their new home.

Evangelist Smith and family, please accept my deepest sympathy on the passing of your husband and father. He was my father too and my pastor. TRIBUTE: CARLTON HELMSLEY SMITH The beauty of a life lived for the Lord Jesus Christ cannot be measured by mere words. It can only be celebrated with the assurance that only what’s done for Christ will last. Today we celebrate the life of a brother, a saint, an elder and pastor whose love for Jesus and the body of believers in Christ was demonstrated by his commitment to serve the people of God, even in the face of ongoing health challenges. His years of service in the Bethel Ft. Lauderdale church will always be remembered. His love for the songs of Zion and the passion with which he sang “When God dipped His pen of love into my heart” will be missed. Pastor Smith showed a love for the saints, often extending himself to visit the sick, even when he himself was ailing. Although sometimes disappointed, he served faithfully to the end. Pastor Carlton Smith, you faithfully served the Lord as our beloved pastor at the Bethel United Church in Fort Lauderdale. Living a holy life in the sight of God and men, you fought a good fight and finished your course with joy, ever keeping the faith that was delivered unto you. With the holy angels blowing a triumphant trumpet, you escaped the clutches of death and was transported into paradise waiting for that glorious day when we all get to heaven to be reunited in the presence of the most high God. To Evangelist Smith and the Smith family, please accept our sincere condolence that your beloved husband and father has departed and migrated from Earth to Heaven. We mourn with you because we know that our beloved Pastor Smith will not be seen again in this life. We miss him greatly and we know that he is in such perfect bliss that he would not want to return to the pain and sorrows on Earth, even for a moment to say a final goodbye. “None of us are indispensable, but some of us are irreplaceable” Elder Smith (Papa) was a kind, supportive, and caring man whose home was always open to our family. When visiting his home, he would see to it that we felt welcomed and comfortable. He would entertain us with stories and made sure we had a good laugh. We will cherish the fun times we had with him telling us stories about the old days, introducing us to some old time funny and timeless Jamaican sayings and proverbs, and of course the funny thing he always did with his eyebrows and forehead. He would always have an encouraging word for us, and if he saw only one of us he would always ask how the others are doing. He was a great example of what being dedicated to God and the church truly meant. Even when not feeling well, he made it his mission to show up at church. He loved to sing and would sing every chance he got. We will always remember him sitting in his chair with his microphone, and at times singing louder than the choir. The unique relationship he had with his wife Cinderella was one of a kind. The way they would bicker and play with each other at times was fun to watch, as we could see the maturity of their love and how special it was; you could tell they were meant for each other. Elder Smith was a special and irreplaceable man who has impacted our lives and has left great memories that we will cherish forever. Now you’re singing on the heavenly choir Papa. To our beloved pastor, father, and grandfather, Elder Carlton Smith. It is with mixed emotions that I write this tribute today. We are joyful because we have the comfort of knowing that you are in a better place, yet sorrowful now that you’re no longer on this side of the vineyard. For as long as we can remember, you cared for us like your own. Whenever you greeted us, you had a huge smile on your face and a big, warm hug. You were a loving, caring, and humble man. Most importantly, you were a faithful man of God that always stood up for your beliefs. As a devoted pastor to our church; serving God’s people was your number one priority. Even when you were ailing, you’d always press to come out to church. We remember you saying, “It’s only what one does for Christ will last”. You were never afraid of death, you’d always cite the scripture “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1). In your final days, we could see that you were tired and ready to go home to be with the Lord. As much as it hurt us to see you slowly slip away, we understood that your time had come to say goodbye. Although we miss you, we’ll remember you in a happy way. As I write this now, I can hear you singing out “Just suppose God searched through Heaven, and couldn’t find one willing to be, The supreme sacrifice that was needed, That would buy eternal life for you and me”. Elder Smith, it was such a privilege to have known you and an honor to have called you our pastor. May you rest in the arms of our Saviour until we meet again on the homecoming day. We love you pops! The Bond Of Love Through Time, Space And Eternity!!! The bond of love between a father and his children last a lifetime and into eternity, it will never change. It remains the same through time, space and eternity. With his infectious laughter, it expressed his deep love for each of you. Thus; time, space and even death could never change his great love for each of you. His love will last through eternity and even then; it will never change. His love was pure, unconditional, true understanding of any situation. Truly, his expressed love was forgiving of any mistakes. My wife and I, our family and church family, join with you as we celebrate the life of Pastor Carlton Smith. In this modern age where the preaching of the gospel has become big business and many leaders have forgotten the meaning of the word, “Servant”, Pastor Carlton Smith exemplified the genuine humility indicative of the true heart of a shepherd. He was never one to push himself to the forefront; Pastor Smith was more than happy to encourage others to go forth in their gifts. Pastor Smith was like a quiet storm; he was a man of few words, but when he spoke, he spoke with authority out of his heart for God. He was a true brother and friend, one whom I had great respect for because he was genuine. He loved God, he loved his wife, he loved his family, and he loved the church. To know Pastor Smith was to love him. He was such a great family man and people person, that it was hard to be around him and not have a smile on your face. Evangelist Cinderella Smith was one of the long standing members of First United Brooklyn, so when Elder Smith asked for her hand in marriage, it wasn’t easy to let her go. But I knew I was releasing her into good hands because Elder Smith was a very good man who was serious about his walk with God. The work in Fort Lauderdale was established and pastored by our patriarch in the gospel, Bishop Sydney Alexander Dunn, who proceeded Pastor Smith in their transition out of this life. The fact that Bishop Dunn entrusted the church into the pastoral leadership of Elder Smith, speaks volumes of the legitimacy of Elder Smith. His presence will be greatly missed here on earth, but we rejoice with the family and saints at the fact that we will meet again in the New Jerusalem. A Tribute to “My Pastor” Evangelist Cindy Smith, Smith Family and Bethel United Family. Ironically we here on earth are sad while the heavenly host is rejoicing as their 5-star General has returned to his rank in heaven. Pastor Carlton Smith has now joined the spirits of just men made perfect. We are exuberant that he was our contemporary, our path knotted and we are left better educated into the principles of the Kingdom living. As a person young in the Pastorate it was a blessing to have Elder Smith and Evangelist Smith become congregants of our church in Miami. I was able to witness with fascination how a true son of God lives while in the flesh. His commitment to the Oneness Apostolic Gospel and Holiness Standards defined his way of life and truly exemplify the concept: “In Christ. It was an enigmatic experience to observe Elder Carlton Smith walked on the Highway of our God while dispensing goodness, love, kindness, peace humility and a plethora of God –like qualities to many who walk on the low road. It was indeed an honor bestowed on me as a Marriage Officer to have joined Evangelist Cinderella Smith and Elder Carlton Smith in Holy Matrimony. That occurrence, together with our mutual respect for the Oneness of God, the ‘Word’ and the manifestation of the Holy Ghost cemented a bond with the Smith – Mullings Families... Pastor Smith affectionately called me “My Bishop” and I called him “My pastor.” He moved on to become the Pastor of the Bethel Family, but he was still accessible for our gleaning from his reservoir of spiritual treasure trove. Bethel, you have lost one of the best saints who ever walked this earth. Paul in 1corinthian 1:2 said we are called to be saints; without question, Pastor Carlton Smith was called to be a saint and he attained to ‘Sainthood.’ I am not sure what God is saying to us; In the space of three months Bethel lost its top generals: Patriarch, His Eminence, Bishop Sidney Alexander Dunn and Our Pastor: Elder Carlton Smith. Those of us who treated them well are assured of blessings in this life; if we walk in their footsteps, then surely “The Crown” is waiting. To: Evangelist Cindarella Smith, members of the bereaved family, Church family and friends: On behalf of Original Faith Family Apostolic Church, West Palm Beach I extend heartfelt sympathy and prayerful condolences to you on the passing of our dearly beloved Pastor Carlton Smith from life to life and from labor to reward. I first met Elder Smith here in South Florida in the late 1980s and we worshipped together at the First United Church, Miami, under the leadership of Bishop Charles Mullings. I remember him as a servant leader, dynamic preacher, teacher, melodious singer and staunch defender of the Apostolic faith. Previously Elder smith was one of the leading ministers at the Newton Shiloh Apostolic Church, St Elizabeth, Jamaica under the leadership of Bishop Nevis Rowe; and for a while he was left in charge of that assembly. He parlayed that leadership skill and experience and was a priceless asset not only to Shiloh Apostolic Newton, but also to First United Miami. He later became an associate minister, assistant pastor, and later pastor of Bethel United Church, Ft Lauderdale. Later when we became pastors I could count on his faithful support and a strong delegation from Bethel United, Ft Lauderdale for special services here in West Palm Beach. On a personal note, Pastor Smith was a jovial and pleasant person, with a great sense of humor; and very approachable. While we worshipped at First United Church, Elder Smith and Lady Smith transported me to and from Church, and I had dinner at their home in Miramar every Sunday. Elder Carlton Smith was very hospitable and made me feel at home. I will treasure those precious memories forever. Pastor Smith’s passing leaves a huge aching void in the hearts of all who knew him; but our grief is tempered by the knowledge that he is resting in the arms of Jesus, until we meet in that great convocation in the air and the Great Marriage Supper of the Lamb. “And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them” (Rev. 14:13). May his soul rest in peace and God’s eternal shekinah light shine perpetually upon him. Also, may the healing balm of God’s comforting presence and the precious memories and priceless legacy of this great man of a much greater God minister to us all in this time of bereavement. It is with mixed feelings that I write this tribute on behalf of my family and the Bethlehem United Church family, in honour of the late Elder Carlton Smith. Elder Smith has been a faithful, dedicated and humble servant of the Lord who was diligent in his effort to advance the Kingdom at every opportunity. Despite his physical health challenges, he was motivated to serve willingly, as long as he was able to move. His humily and desire to stand for righteousness together with his passion for the oneness doctrine is commendable and has been an example to many. We are truly grateful to God for his life and the service he’s rendered. Although we mourn the loss of Elder Smith, there is mixed feelings; we are not grieving as those without hope, we are assured that while we may lose a dear brother and friend, heaven has gained one of its best soldiers. For a Friend, Pastor Carlton Smith On Saturday 7th 2017, I took with me Deacon Harvey walker and travelled one hundred and seventy miles to visit a friend, Pastor Carlton Smith. It was not a secondary trip, but it was the primary mission, as the Lord had laid it upon my heart to go and pray with him. His simple question to me was, “how you find me?” I asked if he had any discomfort, he replied, “no pain at all.” Of course we did not know that exactly one week later, he would bid us and this world farewell. Our songs, our payers our praises testify to the fact that he was dressed for his journey, and he was waiting to go. As a result I borrowed these words from the poet: LOVE ME BUT LET ME GO. When I come to the end of the road, and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in the gloom filled room Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not too long, and not with your head bowed low Remember the love we once shared, love me, but let me go. For this is a journey we all must take, And each must go alone, it’s all part of the master’s plan, a step on the road to go home. When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know, and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds, love me but let me go. Don’t grieve for me, for now I am free. I am following the path God Laid for me. I took his hand when I heard him call; I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work or play, task left undone must stay that way. It is without a shadow of doubt in my mind that a great solder in the Army of God, has fallen in the line of duty. As we gather here to celebrate the life and legacy of a colleague, whose labor has come to an end. Pastor Carlton Smith was a man whose faith was unwavering in the oneness of God and the power and soundness of the Apostolic Doctrine; he was a Gentle Man and one who would always have a song to cheer the hearts of the attendees of any service to which he was present. It is with sadness of heart, but joy and comfort that I write this tribute. It is sad to lose a dear friend, a man of God; however it is comforting to know that Pastor Carlton Smith. I met Pastor Smith over 35 years ago at Shiloh Apostolic Church in Newton, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica W.I. he has never changed from his steadfastness; As a teacher â&#x20AC;&#x201C; preacher of rightness, he held to the values of this great salvation. We are praising God for the opportunity to have been associated with one of His most devout child. A true disciple of the Word, and a humble, servant of God, his life was a true reflection of the Scriptures. This humble demeanor did not minimize his passion when imparting the word of God, through teaching or preaching. He truly believed that God has the last say on every situation and that He has provided guidance for every area of our lives.

In 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV), the Apostle Paul consoles the brethren by affirming that, “ Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” On behalf of the Mount Zion Apostolic Church – Toronto, we would like to express our heartfelt condolence to Evangelist Cindy Smith, Smith family and the entire Bethel United Church of Jesus Christ (Apostolic) family during this time of bereavement and transition. Clearly, this has certainly been a season of tremendous transitions as we witness the divine elevation of so many of the founding fathers and stalwarts of the Apostolic Faith. Pastor Carlton Smith, like so many others, has been summoned to higher service. There can be no denying that Pastor Smith epitomized a life devoted completely to the service of the Lord Jesus Christ. No-one could speak to Pastor Smith about any issue, without being referred to the Bible. He stood on the Word, lived by its precepts and imparted its wisdom with alacrity. Blessed with a great sense of humor and a desire to bring joy to those around him, Pastor Smith could bring a smile to your face simply by calling your name. Passionate, firm, methodical, conservative, articulate and approachable, he was always ready to listen. He listened to understand and sometimes with only a smile, would let you know it was going to be alright. His courage to do the right thing was evident in the way he conducted himself. His humility did not allow for self-promotion and his gracious attitude always allowed others to lift him up. His desire to please God has caused him to raise a standard that is to be exemplified and has left a legacy to that is to be treasured. My mind knows that you are in a better place and that you are at peace where there is no more pain. I just wish I could explain that information to my heart. I will know that my heart is starting to heal when I am able to recall memories and not have such a heavy heart. Dad, I will always remember the special conversation we shared with that special smile of yours and your caring heart you always gave me. I will miss hearing you say “Beth” your special nickname for me. All the times when we spoke and I had asked how you are doing, you would reply, “not the best but among the rest.” And always ending our telephone conversations with you telling me, “I love you baby.” I think most of all I will miss sitting across from you on the dinner table watching you eat, talking and laughing together whenever you would visit me. As I sit here reminiscing, I remember being a young child growing up and suffering from asthma. Whenever I would have an attack, you would come and scoop me up, throw me in the air so that could catch my breath again, and not once did I fall because you were always there to catch me. I know that I am an adult now but sometimes I do stumble, which leaves me wondering who will catch me before I fall now that you are gone? Dad, goodbye may seem forever, farewell is like the end but in my heart is the memories and there you will always be.

I will love you always, Yvette Spiritual, strong-willed, funny, humble, and loving are the words we use to describe you. I say use and not used because even though you are not physically here, you will always be with us in spirit. As one of you many grandchildren, I can speak for everyone when I say this, we were loved. We all fought to be your favorite but you never treated any one different from the other. I will miss the funny wiggle you did with your ears, your sense of humor, hearing you call me grandbaby and dumplings will always be ‘dumtings’ because you always make them when you know that we were coming to see you. But most of all gramps, I will miss hearing your voice and being able to say, I’m coming to visit! Memories are how we will remember you now. It’s not goodbye it’s simply see you later. Watch over and protect us as we continue on this journey we call life. Always guide us through the darkness to see the light. I will love you always, Jody.

I would tell you about my dad, if only I knew where to start. Some people don’t believe in heroes but they haven’t met my dad. My dad was a God-fearing, hardworking, loving and caring person. He was kind, unpurchaseable, and clean in heart, body and mind. Financially, he wasn’t rich but I felt like a millionaire with his love and nurturing. “Papa” as we called him, was a family oriented person. He would go to work and no matter how little we had, we would have to wait until he got home “No matter how late” because we all had to sit at the dining table and eat together. As kids, we would always leave the meat for last and papa would jokingly say “Did you see that” and by the time we look away he would take a piece of meat from our plate. My dad was a disciplinarian, Oh yes he was!! “If only my kids believe”. In their eyes he’s “golden and too quiet”. As a child, I couldn’t understand why he was so strict but as I got older I realized that he only wanted what was best for us. He taught us the value of hard work, good judgement, courage, and integrity. He had his short-comings but of course “he was human”. They say there’s no such thing as perfect but in my eyes he was. Papa was a very humble individual. Material things were irrelevant to him, as he would say “You can’t carry it to the grave with you”. As impassive as he was, all that thrilled his soul was Jesus. Nothing or no one could let him get to church late. As soon as he was ready for church, he would say to my mom “Mercy, are you ready” and if she wasn’t ready,” he’s gone”. Even in his last few weeks, he was too weak to sit up for a long period but he still wanted to go to church in his wheel-chair because he wanted to worship with the other brethren. If you ask me, I think he was too honest, as kids we weren’t allowed to pick our neighbors fruit without asking or accepting things that weren’t an honest transaction. He would say “the receiver is as bad as the rogue”. He took his matrimonial vows very seriously “for better or worst”. I remember when my mom got sick; he did everything for her, until she took her last breath in his arms. Oh dad, how I’m going to miss the way you said “Mi Dawta”? I will miss your laughter, your smile, your great sense of humor, and especially the way you moved your forehead. Papa, I hope you can hear me, so I can let you know that you were and will forever be my superhero. So please, go be at rest in your father’s mansion and know to me, you were always the best. Carlton Smith, a Pastor to many but I’ve had the privilege to call him my Grandpa. Everyone who has been in contact with him knows he was an exceptional man. Not only was he handsome, he had a heart of GOLD and a brilliant mind to top it all. The list of amazing words to describe him is endless, but just to name a few he was one of the most loving, selfless, humorous & respectful human beings to have graced this Earth. For 83 years my grandfather unfailingly epitomized love, proving everyday what a loving father, husband, grandpa, pastor and friend looked like. As a father and a husband, he worked hard to provide for his family. My mother and her siblings watched him work multiple jobs, allowing their mother, Mercella, to stay at home with them. Together not only did they take care of their children, they took care of one another. As the older brother to his sisters, he was a leader and a protector. This role later grew when he became a pastor, loving his church and the members. I’ve heard stories of how he was a confidant for members in their time of need to the point where he was considered family. He took pride in being in the church since he was a teen; his passion for singing turned to preaching the word of God all over. He was known as a very respectable pastor and it has always been a pleasure to visit and hear him preach. One of my most memorable moments with him in church was his sermon on the importance of forgiving. He stated the scripture “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:32). This stuck with me ever since and because of him I truly know what it means to forgive. You see, a grandparent is there to teach us things and spoil us in ways our parents won’t. They have endured plenty but yet remain positive and wise, allowing you to look at them as heroes. Grandpa in fact expressed an act of heroism one night when I saw a dead lizard. I screamed for him and in the room he came to the rescue, picking it up. That very next morning I woke up to him making his infamous dumplings or as he called it “dumtings” with ackee & saltfish, one of my favorite dishes. Oh yes! He was an excellent cook, a man of many trades! The two of us sat, ate and shared some of the best laughs to date. Those simple acts of love are what mattered the most. A man as loving and humble as my grandfather surely will never be forgotten. He was extremely selfless, willing to give his all to his loved ones because he knew all his treasures were in heaven. As the Bible says, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21). All my life, I have never seen him stressed over anything materialistic because his true riches were in heaven. The material things of this world could never measure up to his love for God, his family, and friends. Like most, he had his good and bad days but he was entirely grateful for all the days he lived with us. On his not so best days, he remained positive telling us “I’m not the best but among the rest.” In June he professed his appreciation for the life God gave him stating to me the scripture, “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away” (Psalms 90:10). Four months later, on October 14th, 2017, he flew away. Although we may have lost him in the flesh, our memories and love shared will always live in our hearts. It has been a blessing to always make you laugh and I’ll miss you calling to check up on your grand baby. Grandpa, you will be missed by all but as you said, “My home is in heaven.” So it’s bittersweet to know you are well rested at home, but we’ll smile to know your new journey has begun. The best things in life are the people you love, the places you’ve seen and the memories made along the way. My grandfather was a kind hearted man with a great sense of humor. One day while visiting my grandpa for his 80th birthday, my cousins and I decided to play hide and seek. When it was my turn to hide, I chose the closet but that didn’t turn out so well. While I was exiting the closet, my foot somehow got caught in a piece of clothing and down came the clothing rod. Thinking he would be upset, we told my older cousin, but when grandpa found out, he just laughed and didn’t even raise an eyebrow. His main concern was whether my cousins and I were okay. On the plus side, the next day my uncles made him a brand new closet. During my last visit to see him, I remember every time I called out to him, he would sit with his eyes closed pretending to sleep. As soon as I started to walk away he would shout “Sade... I got you!” and we would both burst out in laughter. Those are the moments that I will treasure forever. However the hard part about all of this isn’t losing him and saying goodbye, it’s learning how to live without him even though he will always be in my heart. It will be heartbreaking to no longer see him again but it’s also very hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember. I cried the night he passed, and I still cry today. Although I love you dearly, I couldn’t make you stay. Your golden heart stopped beating, and your hard-working hands are at rest, but at least I know now God has one of the best. Grandpa, I will miss your smile, voice, jokes and the love that we shared. I’ll even miss the sugar cane and mangoes you always made sure I got. Grandpa, as you already know, I’m not much of a talker but I could not just sit and have all the girls share their memories of you without letting you know how I feel. Grandpa, I am so very fortunate to have known such a great man. Even luckier to have loved, respected and admired the man that is my Grandpa. You were my Grandpa for 26 years and for all those years not once did you yell or scream at me. You were always pleasant, always smiling, always humming something. But most of all you were kind, generous and treated people with love and respect. I always look forward to your yearly visits during the summer times even though I know that means giving up my room and sleeping downstairs on a blow up bed but that was alright with me because I loved hanging out with you. Watching some of those crazy TV shows with you and hear you say “That’s rubbish, TV lie.” Loved hearing you call me and say “come here me grandson, come and make grandpa a cup of tea and give me two of those cinnamon crackers. I loved that you were such a good father to my mom. We all have so much to be grateful to you for. Thank you for your love of life so generously shared, for your acceptance, gentleness, softness and strength and for all the laughter, stories and great conversations. Elder Smith served the church faithfully over the many years, even during those times when his health kept him away. But God saw that his work here was complete and so it pleased the Lord to called him home, saying “rest from your labours my child”. As a soldier Elder Smith stood for the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ; now we can all say Elder Smith “you have fought a good fight, you have finished your course, you kept the faith.
