PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST

Fiona Fong shares how her passion for people helped her rise through the ranks from management trainee to Head of Talent at British American Tobacco (BAT) Malaysia. By Emily Loh

F

iona joined British American Tobacco (BAT) in 1996 as a Human Resources Management Trainee in Malaysia. She held numerous positions in the area of Management Development, Compensation & Benefits and HR Systems & Projects. In 2003, Fiona moved to Citibank and held a number of positions within the HR function with her last role being the Head of Learning & Organisational Development covering talent management, employee engagement, performance management, and learning and development for the overall Citi Malaysia franchise. In May 2014, Fiona rejoined BAT Malaysia as Head of Talent for Malaysia Area.

How did your career start? “I graduated with a Bachelors of Business, majoring in Economics & Finance. The natural inclination since I was a finance graduate was to apply to the financial institutions, which I did. However, lady luck had other plans for me, as a good friend recommended for me to apply for the Management Trainee (MT) programme offered by BAT Malaysia, and I decided to have a go at it. I was invited to the assessment centre, which was a mandatory requirement for the programme applicants, and went through a series of psychometric tests. BAT Malaysia made me an offer, with the option of choosing

8

TAKING IT FROM THE TOP 2015

either the Marketing, Finance or Human Resources MT programme. I felt the HR MT programme was comprehensive and provided a structured career path, and opted to join as a HR management trainee.”

Why did you choose this position and industry? “On hindsight, I think the industry chose me but the reality is this – when I was given the opportunity, I kept an open mind, I asked for clarity, I was willing to make the most out of every opportunity extended to me. Most importantly, I had and still have a belief that if I try, work hard enough, and focus on the right issues, things will fall into place. To answer why I chose HR as opposed to Marketing or Finance, which was my major – I believe I speak for the majority of the fresh graduates (at least during my time), in saying that I, like many others, was not really sure what I was looking for in terms of a career. I did not have a specific preference of what field I would like to venture into, although I was pretty sure Finance was not it! However, I was very aware of my strengths and I knew what inspired me. So, when I learnt details about each option, I felt that HR suited my personality best, and opted for it. One key element that helped me decide then was the people factor, which is key in all organisations. To provide a bit more context, I started teaching ballet since I was 15. I truly believe that the discipline instilled through the artform and the skills that I learnt in dealing with the parents of my pupils helped me mature faster. I learnt how to manage

expectations, communicate confidently and more importantly, learnt how to carry myself better. I believe the discipline of teaching ballet helped me to hone my maturity and ability as a person who genuinely wants to make a difference, one child at a time, one day at a time. I used the same philosophy in HR – one person at a time, one day at a time – at the very minimum.”

How did you progress up the corporate ladder? “The MT programme with BAT Malaysia was two years and I spent close to a total of six years in BAT Malaysia. During that time, I held various roles within the HR function in areas of Management Development, Compensation & Benefits, and HR Performance Management & Systems. I spent 11 years in Citi Malaysia, holding various generalist and specialist positions within the HR space, supporting both the consumer and corporate banking entities as well as corporate functions. Currently, I am the Head of Talent for BAT Malaysia and my portfolio covers talent acquisition, talent management, performance management, employee engagement and overall organisational development.”

What are some experiences you’ve had in your rise to the top that have helped shape the leader you are today? “This is not humility speaking but I think I have a long way to the top, wherever the top may be, but my experiences are aplenty. I have the privilege to work with two great companies – not just once, but twice over with BAT and with great companies, come great people. When

“Seek to understand before you seek to be understood.”

“Building strong teams – you do not leave a legacy with achievements; you leave a legacy through your people.” you spend at least eight hours a day, 300 days in a year, with colleagues from all levels who are not only smart but kind, compassionate and genuinely care about what happens to other people, you learn, and you learn, and you learn everything that they can offer.”

What achievement are you particularly proud of? “Building strong teams – you do not leave a legacy with achievements; you leave a legacy through your people.”

What would you say is the secret to your success? “I learnt an important lesson a long time ago. It was my first week as a management trainee, when there was a request from the factory manager at the time for a letter from the company to apply for a visa to China. I said, ‘No problem, let me draft it for you.’ Since it was my first week, I had nothing much to do so I drafted it in 10 to 15 minutes, I reckon. I called her back to let her know that her letter was ready and she said, ‘May I know who you are?” I told her I’m the new HR MT. She said, ‘Wait there – I will come see you.’ When she arrived, the only thing she said to me was, ‘In my years of working here, HR has never replied in 10 minutes...’ I do feel very strongly about ensuring that my stakeholders feel ‘safe’ with me. By ‘safe’ I mean that they can count on me for a response – a response mind you, not an answer – I do not have an answer for everything – but I can

choose to respond – be it a ‘Yes’, a ‘No’, or ‘I don’t know’, ‘let me find out and get back to you’. And I do get back to them. This is probably the only ‘secret’, if you can call it that, that I can share without hesitation, that I follow diligently and I believe it has served me well. It keeps me grounded and more importantly, the more consistent I am in demonstrating this value, the more credibility I build with my stakeholders.”

What are your life and work philosophies? How do they guide you in your job? “I borrowed this from one of my bosses: ‘Seek to understand before you seek to be understood.’”

Where would the next phase of your career take you? “Retirement I hope! I remain open and focused in the phase right now. Carpe diem!”

What advice would you give to young graduates about making it in life? “First and foremost, define what is ‘making it in life’ and know what are the kind of sacrifices needed to achieve it. There is no one without the other. There is no right time to do the right thing – as long as you focus on doing the right thing, the right things will fall into place.”

TAKING IT FROM THE TOP 2015

11

LESSON 1: STEP BEYOND PAPER QUALIFICATION

LESSON 4: HAVE THE RIGHT SENSE OF PURPOSE

“Obtaining a basic degree today helps as far as putting a foot in the door (to get an opportunity for an interview) and employment. Thereafter, one should be open and flexible to take on roles outside of their qualification. My first degree was in Education TESL. In my first job, I took on a role in Corporate Communications, which had given me the fundamentals and skills beyond my first qualification. After a few years, my job scope expanded to the various critical aspects of Human Resources. My foundation in communication helps in terms of presentation, management and leadership as I grow in my career path.”

“What motivates me each day when I wake up in the morning to go to work? That should be a question we frequently ask ourselves. I am very inspired by the advice given by a senior leader I look up to and have a lot of respect for. We should not make position and salary the purpose of our work. When we do our work from our heart and do it well, people will recognise our contribution. Position and salary will follow.”

LESSON 2: LOVE WHAT YOU DO “If we have to spend eight to 10 hours at work, it should be something we love working on. An advice for those who are starting out in their career, have a positive and open mind to learn as much as you can at the start of your career. Build a strong foundation in terms of networking, knowledge, your own repertoire of skills and competencies before deciding on what you would like to pursue as a long-term career.”

LESSON 3: GET A MENTOR “We can go far by our own competencies but we can go further by the collective competencies of our team. We can literally climb mountains and conquer valleys through the guidance and support given by a mentor. I am very fortunate to have mentors along the way in my career, particularly so in Telekom Malaysia. Without them, I would not be where I am today.”

LESSON 5: HAVE HUMILITY “Having humility goes a long way. Be humble to ask when we are not sure. Be humble to admit that we don’t know. Be humble to learn (including from junior staff who rose from rank-andfile). Be humble to seek advice from seniors. Be humble to learn first before challenging. When we are humble, it will open doors for others to step forward to offer support and assistance. Remember, we cannot work alone in organisations.”

LESSON 6: DON’T BE KIASU “It took me a long time (and I’m still working on it) to understand the importance of slowing down and to smell the roses. Often times, we are so performance and results-driven that all our body systems say is ‘Go, go, go!’. My mentor once told me that there is a difference between a sprinter and a marathon sprinter at work. The former is one who is able to achieve high performance but can last only a short period of time before his energy runs out. The latter is one who knows when to sprint, reduce speed to garner energy, and sprint again for greater results. Recharge for greater results.”

“If we have to spend eight to 10 hours at work, it should be something we love working on. Have a positive and open mind to learn as much as you can...”

12

TAKING IT FROM THE TOP 2015

“Progressive people will always ask ‘What’s next?’, ‘What more can I do?’, ‘What am I getting better at?’ etc. They are always looking for ways to change and grow.” LESSON 7: UNLEARN TO LEARN “To take in new knowledge, skills and competencies, one needs to unlearn to learn. It means when new skills and exposure are presented to us, abstain from quick judgment based on our understanding. Take in the new lessons without prejudice and biasness. Apply them and over time, they can be balanced with our own set of ideas and judgment to make us a better and more holistic-thinking person.”

LESSON 8: ATTITUDE “Progressive people will always ask ‘What’s next?’, ‘What more can I do?’, ‘What am I getting better at?’ etc. They are always looking for ways to change and grow. Many leadership gurus have written that more than any other, one single attribute which separates people in the workplace is attitude. Attitude determines altitude. Don’t look back. Constantly challenge yourself. Be bold to move forward. Beware of complacency. When you feel you are comfortable and in control, chances are you are not getting anywhere. “

• Favourite read is Too Many Bosses, Too Few Leaders by Rajeev Peshawaria. • My most memorable experience in my first job was Meeting the Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia up close. • If I wasn’t doing this, I would be a teacher. • My top four mentors are Dato’ Mohd Khalis Abdul Rahim, Chief Human Capital Officer, Telekom Malaysia Berhad; Dato’ Sharif Zaimi, Vice President Group Human Capital Management, Telekom Malaysia Berhad; Puan Nor Akmar Md Yunus, Advisor Transformation Projects, Telekom Malaysia Berhad; and YM Raja Teh Maimunah Raja Abdul Aziz, Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer, Hong Leong Islamic Bank. • The best advice given to me is not to let emotions cloud my judgment and influence my responses to situations.

BEING AT THE HELM

The CEO of Westports Holdings Berhad gives his insight into what it takes to be a good leader.

T

he one rule of being a good leader according to Ruben Emir Gnanalingam is making the people around you better. Adding to which, Ruben states that when it comes to people management in organisations, leaders have to understand two premises: “People want to work. I once let an employee go on paid leave for as long as the person wanted – it lasted two weeks.” The second premise is that people want to perform. People are not born thinking that they want to be lazy at work. Laziness festers from a lack of attention,” the 38-year-old CEO says. Within these logic, he continuously works to “make people better, want to be better, and strive to be better.”

By Afiq Fauzi

Ruben believes that to work in the compounds of this rule of leadership, a leader should have a few essential traits and principles to hold by. “If there was anything I have been accused of is that I’m fair to a fault,” Ruben states when asked about his thoughts on what makes a good leader. The Economics graduate from the London School of Economics says that he does not tolerate (“isms”) referring to his nepotism, racism, sexism, ageism and advocacy of meritocracy around the office. And when it comes to selecting the best people for a job, he looks at merit rather than seniority.

TAKING IT FROM THE TOP 2015

16

TAKING IT FROM THE TOP 2015

“People are not born thinking that they want to be lazy at work. Laziness festers from a lack of attention.” Ruben strongly believes in empowering employees. A crucial part in achieving optimum results is empowering employees to make decisions and more importantly allowing them to make mistakes to learn from. “As long as they don’t make the same mistake twice!” he quips. The avid sports fan says athletes enjoy their jobs more as they are empowered to make decisions. “When you’re on the field, the coach isn’t going to tell you to pass or shoot. You have to make that decision on your own,” says the co-owner of Barclays Premier League outfit, Queens Park Rangers and local basketball team, KL Dragons. “One of the best advices given to me is to put yourself in other people’s shoes,” says Ruben. This comes in handy to him in two ways as a leader of the company. The first of which is being able to put himself in the shoes of the customers. Ruben says that it’s crucial to understand the saying “customer comes first” and not to take it for granted as he believes most people do. “It’s important to know what they want when you want to build for the future,” says Ruben whose vision for Westports’ future seems boundless. The second is when managing his employees. “If you call your customers the king, you have to treat your employees like the queen. Who else, then, would take care of your king?” says Ruben with a smile.

A good leader, Ruben also points out, knows how to adapt to changes quickly. He says that adaptability is crucial in this day and age where everything is moving at a fast pace with the introduction of the state-ofthe-art technologies. Adaptability, he adds is the ability to push through from scenario to scenario no matter how difficult or how different it gets. Ruben also says he learned from his father, Tan Sri Datuk G Gnanalingam, on building good relationship with his employees. “Before I became the CEO of Westports, my father pointed out three constituencies that I had to tackle. These were to be liked by customers, to be trusted by shareholders and to be respected by the employees,” Ruben says. He also stays hands on and is not afraid to get down to business in any part of the organisation. “Right after graduation I started out doing odd-jobs of the business, of which I handled cranes, worked shifts as a stowage clerk or a traffic controller around the port. This has helped give me an insight on the responsibilities and duties of the front-liners of the company and has helped me become a better decision maker at the helm.” The CEO adds that he is lucky that he has an open relationship with his employees, citing that the bosses he had during his first stint at Westports are also the ones who are under him now. “These people have no problem telling it to me straight. They are able to tell me the things I need to know and not the

TAKING IT FROM THE TOP 2015

things I want to hear,” he explains. Ruben also implemented a suggestion box to gain crucial employees’ feedback and more importantly, to maintain the open relationship with all the other employees. The men and women at Westports are told not to be seduced by success and to never get comfortable in terms of innovation. “To say that we do things because it’s the way it has always been done is taboo around here,” Ruben says, adding that even standard operating procedures are reviewed and renewed annually.

“One of the best advices given to me is to put myself in other people’s shoes.”

• His favourite read: “Malcolm Gladwell and Freakonomics.” • What he would be doing if not this: “I wanted to be a Formula 1 driver but you can’t be more than 5 foot 5 and I think I passed 5 foot 5 when I was 10.” • His first job: “My first internship was me being paid for basically knowing how to use Microsoft Excel, which was a big deal back then!” • His mentors: “My parents, wife and kids.” • The best advice he’s ever received: “From my mother: Put yourself in other people’s shoes.”

BANKING ON HUMAN ASSETS Human resource is so much more than just recruitment and salaries, as Tunku Arran Mohamed bin Tunku Mu’tamir, Head of Human Resources for Commercial Banking and Wealth at Standard Chartered Bank, tells us. By Vivian Chong

Was it always your plan to work in Human Resources (HR) and in a financial institution?

What was your first position with the bank and what did that role entail?

“Actually, I once said that I never want to work in a bank or in HR! When I returned to Malaysia after graduating with a Bachelors of Business Management from Surrey University in London, I researched the market and realised that this was the most attractive job at the time, in terms of pay as well as opportunities. I decided to give it a shot.”

“I joined in 2007 under a graduate programme known as the Banking Apprentice Fast-Track Programme as an Assistant Officer. I had wanted to venture into Corporate Banking but the company saw that I had good communication skills and offered me HR. I may not have wanted to be in HR – although it was part of my business studies – but it’s something that I grew to want.

TAKING IT FROM THE TOP 2015

19

When I started, my responsibilities were to manage monthly reports for corporate banking, and ensure that transactional activities such as the preparation of confirmation letters and headcount data were in order. I also provided generalist support on simple queries from stakeholders.”

Currently, as an HR Business Partner for two core businesses, my key responsibilities are to plan and execute HR strategies while playing a crucial role in driving engagement agendas. I also oversee the building of a strong productive workforce, and manage resources and capacity across these business functions.”

How did you progress from that to your current role?

Tell us more about your stint in the Philippines. What was your biggest challenge and your most important take-away from the experience?

“After the one-year apprentice programme, I was designated an HR Associate for Corporate Banking and later promoted to HR Manager for Technology & Operations and Support Functions. Two years on, I was made HR Business Partner for Retail Banking and since last year, Head of HR for Commercial Banking and Wealth. I have been very lucky to be able to move around within the company as it’s given me the chance to learn about each business area. As far as I know, such a career path is not common within the company but I guess my employers saw what I could do. In 2013, I was sent on a short-term assignment to the Philippines for five months as a Senior HR Manager for Corporate Banking, Risk and Finance.

“I had to expedite

everything and that pushed me to seek new approaches to achieve my goals. The most useful thing I learned from it was the importance of maximising one’s time and the value of good planning.”

“Five months is a very short period of time to win over business stakeholders, convince them to buy into and roll out your ideas, and build an effective relationship. I had to expedite everything and that pushed me to seek new approaches to achieve my goals. The most useful thing I learned from it was the importance of maximising one’s time and the value of good planning.”

How has the company mentored your career growth? “Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) provides a great platform to build one’s network; I have worked with people from Asia all the way to Europe and even America. This international network gives me great insight into how different countries manage situations that are similar in nature. I would say that every single person whom I have worked with has helped build my career through the time and effort they afforded me.”

What training and development does the company offer its employees? “We have a 70-20-10 efficient learning and development criteria, whereby 70 per cent is based on what you learn on the job, 20 per cent is built on from one’s network (as in what you learn from others), and the final 10 per cent comes from classroom-led training. SCB also has a fantastic leadership development programme that grooms individuals into future leaders. During the four-day training, they get

20

“If you want something, you can’t just sit

and wait for opportunities to come to you but you have to go out and talk to people.” to hear from other leaders (senior management) on how the latter worked their way up the corporate ladder, how they managed each stage of their career, and what they could have done better. A big portion of the programme is selfreflection; trainees are guided on how to manage stakeholders, align themselves to the business agenda, deal with different people and manage a team. In short, they learn to become better managers.”

What are some of the pros and cons of your work? “You learn how a business operates on a dayto-day basis, which are useful skills that will help you a lot as you progress in your career. On the flip side, while I really enjoy meeting people, I have my off days too just like everyone else. But at work, I cannot allow my personal feelings to get in the way. I have to push aside my own thoughts and focus on accommodating the person in front of me.”

What have you learned from your job that you have found to be useful in your personal life as well? “At work, it is essential to plan things out in a proper manner and structure one’s time well. As a father of a two-year-old boy, those skills have certainly come in handy! Also, I have learned that if you want something, you can’t just sit and wait for opportunities to come to you but you have to go out and talk to people. Dealing with folks from all walks of life has given me a better understanding of human nature and enabled

me to read people better. All these have made me value the people around me even more.”

If someone is considering a career in HR, what are the most important things they should know? “HR today is not what it used to be; it’s no longer just a transactional activity like issuing recruitment letters or pay slips, but has a very dynamic role within a company. It’s certainly no longer the back end of things. You have to sit at the table with the rest of the team and provide them with value-added ways to improve business performances. To be successful in this role, you need a strategic mind-set, and understand how a business operates so that you can utilise all available resources to optimum results.”

Can you give us an idea of the growth opportunities a fresh graduate can look forward to in an HR career with a financial institution? “There are many options and functions within HR, which can be divided into general and specialist roles. The latter includes recruitment, rewards and performances, employee relations and talent management. As my career path shows, you have the chance to move around the company, dabble in different business areas, go on overseas assignments and take on bigger roles. It really depends on what you want to learn and how assertive you are in grabbing opportunities when they come up.”

IS THIS THE RIGHT PROGRAMME FOR YOU? Most management trainee programmes are similar in that they expose graduates to the company as a whole, but which will be the one that makes all the difference in your career? Find out by asking the right questions, says Lauren Ling. Most corporations have a management trainee programme. It is an entry-level programme that allows the participant to get to know the business and what the company is all about. Graduates are recruited on a full-time basis, and are inducted into a programme that usually involves on-the-job training in various departments within the company. The objective of such a programme is twofold. It allows the employer to gauge a recruit’s strengths and talents, and therefore gives them insight as to where best to place him or her. Likewise for the recruit, he or she is given the opportunity to try out different job scopes to see where he or she best fits. If you are considering a company based on its management trainee programme, then the answers to these questions will help you make the right decision.

How long is the programme?

It can last from three months up to two years.

During this time, you would be expected to learn the ropes fairly quickly. Admittedly, three months is a short period to know the entire organisation so this is probably a very preliminary programme with limited scope. You could only be exposed to one aspect of the business, which can be limiting.

Look for a programme that has a mentorship system. Short management trainee programmes could just be a fancy name for a probation period, in which case, the job you interviewed for would be the one you end up with. For example, if you interviewed to be a marketing executive, and they put you in a management training programme for three months, chances are at the end of the three months, you will be confirmed as a marketing executive. However, when the programme runs for a considerable period of time, ask yourself this:

GP INS AND OUT 2015

31

What kind of exposure will you be getting during that time, and how valuable are they to your career growth? If the programme allows you the opportunity to go deep and wide (that is increasing the depth of your knowledge), then it is worth sticking it out with lateral movements over a few years because you will be able to leverage this experience when you complete the training. Otherwise, consider if it is worth your while to miss out on career advancement opportunities elsewhere.

the contract, as is your probation period. As mentioned above, some companies regard the duration of the management trainee programme as the probation period.

An ideal time frame would be six months to two years.

Are you given a choice?

Always choose programmes that offer you job rotations. This way you will learn about the business as a whole. Is there a job waiting for you? Will you have a job at the end of the programme?

This is a very important question. Most management trainee programmes in this country will place recruits in the company when the programme is completed. But it’s still worthwhile to ask. If you’re participating in programmes where unsuitable candidates or those who do not reach a certain level are terminated, you might want to have a contingency plan in place. Look for an organisation that is expansive and offers many areas of growth.

Are you paid during the programme?

Management trainees are considered hired employees of a company. Interns are not. So be sure what you sign up for. If you’re taken on as an intern, you are usually there for a fixed amount of time, and you may or may not be paid a salary. If they take you on as an intern, you will likely sign a short-term internship contract, if at all, and not an employment contract. As a management trainee, you will sign an employment contract, which states your salary, working hours, and other terms and conditions of the job. Your notice period is stated in

If you’re a fresh graduate, you would probably expect the salary scale of a graduate out in the workforce. There’s no reason to pay a management trainee less than what a fresh graduate would be paid, as you would experience the same learning curves.

Programmes that run from six months onwards will give you a reasonable coverage of the various opportunities available. Say you are a business graduate and get recruited into the management trainee programme of a corporation that runs for six months. During this time, you will be expected to rotate between four departments. That is a fair programme, as it gives you the opportunity to choose between the four at the end of your training. Always choose programmes that offer you job rotations. This way, you will learn about the business as a whole. You will also be exposed to career aspects that you may not have thought of before. For example, a marketing graduate may discover he or she has an affinity for finance during a management trainee rotation, and choose to specialise in financial consultancy.

What’s the mentorship like?

Look for a programme that has a mentorship system. This is when a senior personnel from the corporation is assigned to mentor one or several management trainees. The mentor will be there to guide and advise you during your programme. You will gain valuable insight from someone with hands-on experience in the industry. Usually, trainees will follow their mentors out on the field or assist in projects that they’re handling. This gives them exposure to the real world. Graduates know in theory how things are done; imagine how far along they can move if they’re shown how those theories are applied with experience.

BENEFITS OF BEING AN MT!

Management training programmes don’t just fast track your career; they also offer a host of other benefits that will prove to be beneficial for your future. Here are some of its advantages. By Mel Sim

Management trainee programmes don’t just fast track your career; they also offer a host of other benefits that will prove to be beneficial for your future. Here are some of its advantages.

1

By Mel Sim

YOU ARE EXPOSED TO EVERY ASPECT OF THE BUSINESS

One thing common among most management trainee programmes is the fact that they involve job rotations – one day you could be working in the sales department, three months later in operations. This is so that you are exposed to every department and aspect of the business so that you know exactly how each department works and how they come together as an entity. This gives you a broad overview of the business and essentially makes

you a well-rounded employee and eventually, a leader who understands the business well. On top of that, job rotations also offer you flexibility in terms of exposing you to various skill sets. Through this method, you can then discover where your true “talent” is and eventually pick the department where you will be able to contribute the most in terms of interests and skills.

GP INS AND OUT 2015

35

YOU GET A GOLDEN TICKET

By this we mean access to upper management as well as the big guns in the company. As a management trainee, you will be exposed to senior staff members who will have a lot to share and teach. Most of the times, you will also be assigned a mentor who will often be someone influential in the company. Some companies even organise special networking sessions where its management trainees are given the opportunity to mingle with the key people in the company. Think of it as a backstage pass to one of the most important moments in your life.

2

YOU ARE GROOMED FOR THE FUTURE

One reason why companies offer management trainee programmes is to help them nurture next-generation leaders. Which is why only the most promising talents are accepted in these programmes. As a management trainee, you will undergo training for managerial or supervisory positions – whether it is through classroom lessons, workshops or even more hands-on situations. All of this will come together to properly groom you for a managerial position as your career advances with the company. So in other words, a management trainee programme is your first step to the top!

3

YOU COMPETE WITH THE BEST

Because everyone in the programme is considered “leadership material”, the competition among your colleagues will be fierce... which is a good thing to keep your drive up and to motivate you to work harder and smarter! Nothing like a little bit of competition to get you going. Also, imagine the possibilities if you come out on top amongst your fellow trainees!

5

YOU SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE

As you will be exposed to almost every aspect of the business, this will give you a better insight of how the business works and what it takes to be successful. You will have a more comprehensive view compared to a fresh graduate who is assigned to just the human resource department. But it is not just the bigger picture that matters; because you are constantly on rotation, you will then gain a better insight on how each department works. So you get the best of both worlds really – the details of every aspect of the business leading up to the bigger picture.

6

YOU MAKE FRIENDS WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE

Think about it – if a management trainee programme is designed to nurture future leaders, your fellow trainees are all going to be somebody someday (provided that they complete the programme). So being pals with them now means that you will not only have support in different departments in the future as everyone settles in their selected courses but also if one or two of them eventually becomes a CEO or CFO in the company. How’s that for networking?

36

7

YOU PICK UP ON OTHER SKILLS

One thing a management training programme focuses on is nurturing soft skills – communication, leadership, teamwork. Aside from getting the right education on how to do your job well, you will also pick up helpful tips on how to be a star employee. Whether it is through classroom teachings or hands-on experience, the lessons you gain from your programme will be invaluable in whatever course you decide to take after the programme.

8

IT’S A BOOTCAMP!

Most management trainee programmes involve accelerated training schemes in which you will spend one or two years basically learning everything, anything, all the time. It is not easy but that is why it is only reserved for those who can, right? Think of it as a working bootcamp – you have to rough it out, cry a little, endure some “pain”, suffer long hours, late nights, drawn-out weeks... but before you know it, you became a champ at what you do and will shine from the rest.

MAKING FRIENDS AT WORK

Besides learning the ropes, getting along with your fellow graduate trainees is going to be that other huge part of your days in the graduate programme.

Being a graduate trainee can be a bit like orientation week at university all over again. A bunch of fresh-faced eager beavers from different backgrounds being thrown together and expected to work as a team. It can be

By Emily Loh

daunting. On top of having to act like an adult and learn the ropes in a whole new world, you also have to get people to like you. We share a few helpful tips on how to get your social life started while acing your training.

38

GP INS AND OUT 2015

BE THE GO-TO GIRL/GUY People love resourcefulness! Where are the best places for lunch? Who approves claims? How do you submit requisitions? How does the copier work? Whatever it is – whether work related or not – your fellow trainees and seniors will appreciate someone who seems to know a lot about “everything”. So put yourself out there as one in the know or when you don’t, will always get an answer.

OFFER TO HELP A helping hand is always appreciated. Keep an eye out for stressed-out fellow trainees, busier-than-usual colleagues or someone who has been tasked to take on more. Or take the initiative to find out if there is something you can do, like say help decorate the office for Christmas or stuff those envelopes going out to potential clients.

SPREAD SOME FUN Every programme could do with a Mister or Miss Fun. The graduate training programme fills your work hours but what about after-work activities? Organise a badminton friendly, after-work drinks, group lunches or whatever it is that brings the group together. It’s a great way to connect with your fellow trainees on a deeper level – plus well, have some fun.

TRY NEW THINGS Sign up for things outside your comfort zone. Maybe you’re not a sporty person or you don’t like Japanese food but at least give it a try. People who are willing to get uncomfortable are better able to accept different points of views and accept those who are different.

ASK QUESTIONS At some point in your training, your mentor will probably tell you the same – be curious, don’t be afraid to ask questions, be thirsty for knowledge. Well, the same applies to your social life except you are asking a different set of questions. Everyone loves an audience; give them one. Show genuine interest in your colleagues and give them the chance to talk about themselves.

WEAR YOUR BEST SMILE EVERY DAY Remember the first day of school? Did you gravitate to the kids who were bawling their eyes out or the ones who seemed to be having the best time of their lives? It’s the same at work. In a group of overachieving or nervous fresh graduates, someone who looks friendly, is relaxed and genuinely nice will naturally attract others. It isn’t just about your smile; make sure your whole body is speaking an open, friendly lingo.

GP INS AND OUT 2015

BE NICE – ALWAYS… There are bound to be mean people. Not everybody is going to appreciate your efforts or your friendliness. But don’t get pulled into their world of nastiness because it is not worth it. He or she could be genuinely mean or maybe just going through a bad patch. It is best to simply play it nice and keep your distance.

…BUT DON’T BE A PUSHOVER There is a difference between being nice and being a pushover. Remember, your game plan has to be sustainable. You cannot premise your entire personality around being the “yes” man or woman to everyone. If you find you are always the one giving in or bending over backwards for others then you are definitely doing too much to be liked. Take a step back and learn to say no some times.

39

PAY ATTENTION AND FOLLOW THROUGH If you have been making all this effort, you are bound to be getting access to some people. Fellow trainees could be opening up to you or sharing their interests. Don’t just leave it at that. Take your connections deeper by looking for opportunities to follow up on what you know. If someone mentions a sick parent, remember to ask after his health. If you promised to loan a book, bring it. You never know when one of them will become your next BFF.

BE GENUINE And finally, be genuine because most people can sniff out fakes from a distance – a very long distance. So while you are making a lot of effort to engineer friendships, don’t forget to pair it with a genuine interest in others and a great attitude.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CIMB TCBian MEET NAZREEN AHMAD...

Hello, I’m Nazreen Ahmad. I started my early education in SK Sri Delima in Jalan Ipoh, the same school that my mom went to. Thereafter, my family and I moved to Putrajaya as my mom’s office was relocated there. I finished my secondary education at SMK Putrajaya Presint 8 (1). At that time, I aspired to be a medical doctor specialising in pathology due to my fixation on corpses and death. However, it did not come to pass as I only scored 8As and 3Bs for SPM. Not be deterred, I turned to my other talent - I am quite good with numbers. In University I majored in Accounting and Economics; Economics because I got to learn and utilize the knowledge to almost everything I read in newspapers. My aim is always to work and be successful and to make my family proud. Thus, I did not wait long before I started applying for a job. Less than three months after I sat for my final paper at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), I started my career with CIMB.

CURRENT ROLE…

I’m an Executive Officer in Preferred Banking, Consumer Sales & Distributions (CSD) division, at CIMB Consumer Bank. My shortterm career aspiration is to be a Preferred Relationship Manager, where my main role would be to provide personal financial solutions to Upper Mass Affluent clients in CIMB Bank. Due to my lack of experience in sales, I am currently preparing myself for that role by undergoing on-the-job training with various teams including Preferred Advisory where I learned a lot by assisting on portfolio construction. I have been attending trainings for investment products and sat for multiple product sales & licensing examinations by regulated institutions. I sure hope it would not be a long time before I can be a Relationship Manager (RM). Most of my sales exposures at the moment came from my self-appointed mentor, a Preferred Branch Manager where I was attached early in the The Complete BankerTM (TCB) program. She was the one who inspired me to become an RM. My mentor and team mates guided me on how to deal with clients and taught me numerous sales skills. It is definitely teamwork.

WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED TO GO TO WORK EACH DAY?

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT AT THE JOB?

“Progress motivates me. To me, in my life and in what ever I do, I measure success through progress. If I miss work today, it means I have failed to progress. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”

“Being selected for regional secondment to CIMB Niaga in Jakarta. It was a great experience and excellent learning path for me. I got to expand my network in Jakarta as well as learn about CIMB business in Indonesia. It gave me new perspectives on how culture and socio-economic differences can change how you do business.”

I also enjoy meeting new people, and I get to do this every day. People’s behaviour can be very interesting. Sometimes it is funny; sometimes it is scary but never boring.

REFLECT BACK FROM DAY ONE TO NOW. HOW HAVE YOU EVOLVED IN YOUR CURRENT JOB? HOW HAVE YOU EVOLVED AS A PERSON? “When I started out, I was not a people person. I was not certain whether I would be suitable as a front-liner, taking care of customers. And now, the best part of my work is to meet new people, every day. I learned that sales would not come to you. You have to chase it. Whatever it is I have to get up, open my mouth, and cross-sell. I would say I have more perseverance now than since my first day.”

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS SEEKING THE SAME LINE OF WORK?

LIFE OUTSIDE OF WORK... “I enjoy meeting up with friends over coffee and have discussions about politics and share reviews on recent box office movies. Weekends are usually reserved for family. Lately, I also enjoy reading autobiographies, especially written by comedians i.e. Tina Fey’s ‘Bossypants’, Mindy Kaling’s ‘Is Everyone Hanging Out without Me?’ and Amy Poehler’s ‘Yes Please’. Reading about other people’s journey to become what they are today is very interesting and a lot can be learned from that. I am also a foodie especially in the sweet and savoury section. Thus, I always try to find new restaurants or cafés that serve lovely desserts. So, my weekends or day off always begin with me scrolling through TimeOutKL or Foursquare to look for new and up-coming hangout spots.“

“Keep an open mind in whatever you do. My mentor always said if you do not step up and try, your chance of success is always 0 per cent. But if you are willing to try, there is 50 per cent chance that you will be successful.”

ARE THERE ANY CHALLENGES IN YOUR JOB/ROLE? IF SO, HOW DO YOU HANDLE THEM? “The challenge with a sales position is always about convincing clients. I think this comes with experience. I am still fresh and inexperienced. Thus, I always find the convincing part very difficult. Moreover, you need to build a strong relationship with your clients before it gets easier to close a deal.”

HOW TO APPLY: COMPLETE GE’S ONLINE APPLICATION AT GE.COM/CAMPUSINTERVIEW There’s also a lot of networking opportunities and opportunities to meet global GE leaders. We get to learn and find out how to grow our careers within the company; many GE leaders started out in a GE Leadership Program (LP) too. What was the most interesting project you worked on?

Maliq Fariz bin Mutalib tells us about the benefits of having undergone GE Malaysia’s Graduate Engineering Technical Program (GETP) in Aviation, Field Service Engineer. How has this programme shaped you?

Last year, there was a global initiative to increase the time an engine remains on-wing that involved all field service engineers. We applied lean six sigma tools, leveraged best practices from our global colleagues, identified areas for improvement, and implemented changes to the processes and practices at the customer’s operations. We successfully generated monetary savings for them and reduced their cost of operations. What was the toughest challenge you had to overcome?

GETP is a great platform to transition from school to the work environment, with a conducive environment for learning and growing. Being in a company made up of a diverse group of people pushes you to be out of your comfort zone, and challenges you to be your best and to take risks.

Definitely the technical expertise requirements, as we are expected to be the subject matter experts when it comes to the engines and its operations. Also, managing client relationships; being the key person facing the customer, we represent the company. We have to constantly think before taking any actions while measuring and predicting the outcome.

What are the programme?

this

What was the best advice you received from your mentor/seniors during the programme?

I received multiple trainings – technical, soft skills and leadership – around the globe, which is rare this early in my career, and was exposed to other facets of the business including commercial and customer support.

Stand out from the crowd and build your own brand. Go above and beyond what is necessary and make people remember your name. At the same time, don’t forget to be humble and respectful of other people.

“Nestlé has taught me so much personally and professionally.”

Emily Tang Jie Ying Sales & Marketing Management Trainee Beginning my career as a Management Trainee in Nestlé is certainly one of the best decision I have ever made. My name is Emily Tang Jie Ying, and I have embarked on the Nestlé Sales & Marketing Management Trainee Programme for a little over a year. It has been a tremendously rewarding journey thus far as I had the opportunity to dive deep in each of my rotation for a solid grasp of Sales and Marketing in an FMCG environment. And what better place to build my foundation than in Malaysia’s No.1 FMCG Company!

The 2-year Programme has indeed broaden my understanding of Nestlé’s ambition to deliver ‘Good Food, Good Life’ to our consumers through a structured course of on-the-job assignments and projects, long-term field work, competency-building trainings and coaching support. What I also appreciate is the Nestlé culture that emphasizes on several key values such as Trust, Respect, Involvement, Pride and Commitment. It certainly encourages a healthy working lifestyle whilst building meaningful relationships with my fellow colleagues, and making great friends along the way too! It is not just about the ‘what’ that measures my performance but also the ‘how’ that I find makes my learning journey a holistic one. Nestlé has taught me so much personally and professionally. I am confident to be on the right track towards becoming an experienced Sales and Marketing professional. Shariza Mohd Razi Business HR Partner - Nestlé Ice Cream, Confectionery, Chilled Dairy Business Units For more than 100 years now, Nestlé has established strong brands that affiliate with many Malaysians including myself. Growing up with Milo and Koko Crunch, the decision to join Nestlé right after I graduated from my degree was not a difficult one. I started my career in Nestlé as a Management Trainee for the Human Resource Division in 2008. As a young graduate, I was very excited that the program offered various exposures in different functions, such as Finance, Sales and Factory HR. It was an opportunity to see and learn how Nestlé functioned as the largest Food and Beverage Company in the world and more importantly I had learned the Company’s Values and how it contributed back to the society.

“Nestle has great passion in developing people and leaders for tomorrow.”

As my journey is Nestlé began, I realized Nestlé’s commitment was to focus on long-term business development without losing sight on the necessity to deliver business results. And this only existed because of its strong base in the Company culture, values and principles. Regardless of where you are in the Company, employees shared the same culture, values and principles which at the end of the day make life at work more meaningful and a happy place to work! I always believe that the heart of Nestlé’s success is really the success of its people. Nestlé has great passion in developing people and leaders for tomorrow. It is one place where you expand your knowledge and capabilities through on the job experience, learning through people and at the same time learning foundations through specific trainings and tools. It is the Company that is able to stretch you out of your comfort zone and at the same time provide you with the necessary tools and environment to get you there at the right pace! I joined Nestlé with a goal to reach a managerial position within my first 5 years in the Company. With Here I am today, as a HR Business Partner which is a much bigger role with bigger responsibilities. I learn something new every day and that is what keeps me going in this Company.

Embracing Gen-Y at Work Millennials or commonly referred to as Generation Y (Gen-Y) are increasingly entering the workforce and shaping the landscape of work for years to come. By 2020, this generation is projected to form 50% of the global workforce. It is no surprise therefore that UEM Group is actively seeking to attract these young talents and groom them as future leaders of the Company. Three participants of UEM Group’s YEP and YGP talent development programmes share their thoughts of working at the Company from Gen-Y’s perspective, including its challenges and opportunities.

Ananth Kumar (Faber Group Berhad) I joined UEM Group at an interesting time – the RM1.15 billion merger involving the Asset & Facility Management businesses was underway and I found myself engaged in a variety of interesting projects that included market research, business process reviews and cultural transformation workshops. My experience at UEM Group attained for the past one year has certainly opened up opportunities for me to contribute constructively towards building a new merged entity. I believe this would be the perfect opportunity for anyone who relishes the challenge to develop themselves holistically and gain exposure to various aspects of the corporate world.

Mohammad Fahmi Shamsualaris (UEM Builders Berhad) My experience of working on our RM4.4 billion Cikampek-Palimanan Expressway project in Indonesia has been an eye-opener for me. Living and working abroad could be both physically and mentally challenging, but at the same time exciting. It’s not just about work per se – it’s also about serving local communities and carrying the image of our country, Malaysia. More often than not, my work involved travelling to remote places as we need to consistently monitor our construction sites. In addition, I am also working with a diverse group of personnel – from industry’s experts to academicians, in resolving the problems faced throughout the construction process. My experience thus far has enabled me to build self-confidence and develop business acumen. I have no doubt that UEM Group is certainly the right place for us, Gen-Y to gain experience and realise our true potential.

Abd Kabir Abd Razak (PROPEL Berhad) I have been assigned to work on the RM1.4 billion Fourth Lane Widening Project for New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) and it has provided me, a fresh graduate, with excellent exposure to the engineering and construction business not to mention once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of a mega project. During this project I learnt mostly about working with people from different backgrounds as well as from different age groups, and one of the important key takeaways for me is that to be a good engineer or a project manager, one must not be afraid to take on challenges which arise during the course of the project. It is a continuous learning process, but I am grateful that there is a strong support system here at UEM Group to help me progress in my career.

They will also learn from the wisdom and knowledge of more experienced team members about projects and company processes.”

What was the best advice you received from your mentor/senior? “My mentor told me to constantly keep an open mind and to maintain a positive attitude when faced with challenges. Every role brings a different perspective and edge to the organisation. The main objective is to be like a sponge, to absorb and learn as much as I can.”

BE VERSATILE! That is the advice our talent shares with us when asked what it takes to stand out. Averis’ graduate trainee shares her views on the company’s graduate training programme.

Putting your best foot forward “No matter what happens, you just need to portray your confident side during the interview. I had to go through three stages of interviews. First stage is the phone interview, during which the recruiter assessed my suitability and got acquainted. Second stage is a series of tests on English language, Mathematical skills and IQ level. Third stage is a team assessment. We were grouped together to work on a case and present the solution to an audience. The key is to be yourself with a dash of confidence.”

Opportunities abound Wan Aini Husna Wan Abdullah Graduate Trainee Averis Sdn Bhd

“I have the chance to be seconded to Indonesia or China, I get to fast track my way to managerial level position, and I get to learn everything! When I say everything, I do mean everything! Basics such as how to change the ink cartridge for the printer to how to talk to clients and manage budgetary matters.”

Career highlight “Aside from learning about the functions performed by different teams, such as Account Payable Team, Account Receivable Team and Cash Management Team, I also gained understanding of the way different job families fit together within the company as well as how the client’s business group works,” she says. Under the two-year programme, Wan Aini is being groomed to become an Assistant Team Leader or a Team Leader.

“I was given the opportunity to assist in the company’s 2015 budget. Honestly, I was worried about not being up to the task; nonetheless, I accepted the invitation. It was an interesting and intense phase of my career as not many are given the same opportunity. There were no guidelines but we did receive coaching. The project completely occupied my every moment! But it was a great chance to gain new valuable experience in handling a budget.”

UNIVERSAL BANKERS The CIMB Complete Banker™ (TCB) Programme is what you need to open your eyes up to the opportunities in banking and finance. Find out why from our trainee.

us a head start in our career. We are also part of a wide network of TCB trainees present in various business units across the region, in line with CIMB Group’s ASEAN aspiration.”

What was the most interesting project you worked on?

NICOLE KHOO SIU WEN

Analyst, Fixed Income-Credit Risk CIMB-Principal Asset Management Berhad

How has this programme shaped you? “The first thing I noticed when I joined the The Complete BankerTM (TCB) Programme was the fast-moving, high performance working culture at CIMB. The programme fosters highly independent, self-driven problem-solving executives. That said, we are also expected to work well in a group setting and to leverage on our well-integrated diverse network of staff to move towards a common goal. Apart from providing a good platform to gain significant exposure to the financial markets, the programme has helped enhance my communication skills as well as strengthen my leadership and professional development.”

What are other benefits undergoing this programme?

of

“The TCB Programme provides graduates with good exposure to the banking and finance industry. It is well structured, such that the management trainees are groomed to be allrounded, self-driven universal bankers (as the name suggests!). We are challenged as a banker under various real-life business environments during rotations to different business units that were chosen to fit our career choice. The programme nurtures talents by offering a fast-track access into business units that are otherwise not available to fresh graduates, giving

“One of the most interesting projects I’ve experienced was during my stint with the CIMB ASEAN Research Institute (CARI). CARI was established by CIMB Group to champion a regional public service in support of ASEAN’s economic integration agenda, i.e. the ASEAN Economic Community. In line with its mission, CARI organised a sector-based forum that brought together influential leaders and industry game changers to identify barriers hindering free trade in ASEAN and to propose solutions to these barriers so as to help make the ASEAN Economic Community a more meaningful economic reality. I was fortunate to have been assigned to the CARI team during the planning stage of the conference. My key duties during the period include communicating with various stakeholders to gather a preliminary research paper, managing the event invitations and guests list and coordinating the conference. The event turned out to be a great success with over 120 participating delegates. Being in a room filled with thought leaders was particularly inspiring for me. I also feel proud of being part of a team that has contributed towards the integration of the ASEAN Economic Community. The findings from the forum were later presented to the ASEAN ministers to effect changes and accelerate the integration process.”

What was the best advice you received from your seniors? “What is the worst that could happen? is by far the best advice I’ve received. The spirit behind this quote is simply the empowerment of oneself to go forth and conquer what is seemingly impossible by questioning the limits (or illusions) we impose upon ourselves. Always remember, if the worst-case scenario is not all that terrifying, what is stopping you from taking the leap forward?”

GO BEYOND Ashley Yew talks about her unique experiences and the important lessons she picked up from the CIMB Fusion programme. It was challenging given the depth and complexity of IFRS 9, not to mention having to work with new people in a new environment and to pull out relevant key points and subsequently presenting it to the team. The whole experience helped improve my presentation skills and showed me the value of a confident and well-rounded leader in competitive and volatile environments.”

What was the toughest challenge you had to overcome? “Dealing with demanding customers turned out to be my toughest challenge. The main takeaway for me is to ensure that I am empathetic and listen attentively to my customers and resist the urge to interrupt or solve the problem right away. More importantly, if we handle the situation well and go the extra mile to delight our customers, we may even be able to further improve our relationship, which may lead to more business opportunities. The exposure and learning were priceless.”

ASHLEY YEW

Senior Associate CIMB

How has this programme benefited you? “The CIMB Fusion programme provided a valuable platform for me to gain the best exposure and experience with two world-class firms from two different industries at the start of my career. Both CIMB and PwC have implemented structured rotations, formal learning, and mentoring plans that I really treasure. I have also been exposed to some of the most passionate and forward-thinking leaders, and individuals who are enriched personally and professionally.”

What was the most project you worked on?

interesting

“While at CIMB, under the Business Finance Advisory and Financial Reporting Standards (FRS) unit, I was assigned to a project to interpret and assess the impacts of the upcoming International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) 9 Financial Instruments. I was required to present my interpretation and assessment on the impacts of IFRS 9 to my supervisors and the team.

What was the best advice you received from your seniors? “I would like to share three pieces of advice that I received from my mentors during my CIMB Fusion experience that has helped me through my journey thus far. • Do not limit yourself to the title or task that has been given. Go beyond that. Always be proactive in asking for more opportunities. • Don’t jump into action straight away. Think and ask how you can perform the task in the most efficient way – who can assist you, what is the purpose and the most desired outcome, can current methods be improved, how can you add value? • As you move, you need to constantly remind yourself to not sway from your values and principles. Always take a step back and reflect on what you have done. You need to be very strong inside and have real courage to accept downfall, learn from it and face the people around you with an open heart.”

How has this programme shaped you? “It has definitely developed and prepared me for the corporate world through targeted development plans, structured job rotations and definitely the coaching and mentoring from the senior management.

programme

“The GMAP (Global Maybank Apprentice Programme) provides many benefits especially for a fresh graduate or someone new to the corporate world. We get an overview of how different parts of the bank work together and that helps to understand our own role better as we know how our contribution helps the company. We get exposed to leaders in the bank through dedicated coaching and mentoring, and they provide us valuable insight from their many years of experience. The level of visibility that we get is definitely higher. Global Maybank Apprentices also get to spend about three to six months in any of

Upon graduation, I became a more confident person and am able to put forward my thoughts and articulate them in the right manner. I am comfortable to take lead and show my leadership ability. In addition, the structure of the programme, which gives us a 360 degree view of the bank and its different pillars, allows me to think beyond my scope of work in my day-to-day tasks. Most importantly, through various humanising initiatives infused into the programme, I found myself to be more empathetic when dealing with an issue or a person.”

What was the most interesting project you worked on? “In addition to many huge corporate deals that I had the opportunity to work on, I would say the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project that we were tasked to initiate and deliver was the most interesting and memorable project for me. During the first year of my programme, I was involved in setting up and conducting tuition classes for a group of young students from an orphanage under Maybank’s Cahaya Kasih Programme. We taught the students English and Mathematics, and the sweetest result is when we learnt that their exam results improved significantly as a result of this intervention.”

OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE Stephanie Chua tells us how she is tested in the Global Maybank Apprentice Programme (GMAP).

What was the most interesting project you worked on? “I had the chance to partake in a landmark regional billion dollar deal by a key quasigovernment corporation. Given the tight timeline the team had to adhere to, parties to work with in different countries, and the overall intricacy of the deal, it was certainly an eye-opening duration for me. The deal was also largely successfully, making those long, intense and late nights worth it.”

STEPHANIE CHUA

Global Maybank Apprentice (GMAP) – Global Banking Maybank

How has this programme benefited you? “This programme has shaped me to be an individual who is continuously prepared to take on any challenges that heads my way. The nature of the programme brings about constant change, as one’s job and responsibilities will always differ with each and every rotation we embark on. Besides relentlessly stretching my abilities, GMAP’s experiential learning approach has allowed me to further discover my strengths and weaknesses.”

What was the toughest challenge you had to overcome? “Coming from a non-financial background, everything was fairly new to me when I started my rotations. It was not an easy feat trying to comprehend the numerous financial jargons and its concepts. I also had to learn basic technical skills from scratch. However, this strongly motivated me instead to take proactive steps to equip myself with knowledge and strengthen both my financial skills and understanding. I am glad to have thrived so far through these trying moments. Aside from this, having to bid farewell to the departments when it’s time to move on is also no easy task!”

What was the best advice you received from your seniors? “Always stay uncomfortable. The key to greatness is growth, and growth lies in where discomfort is at.”

What was the most interesting project you worked on? “While being attached with PWS (Magazine & Documentary Department), I was involved in the editing process for Majalah Tiga entitled “Di Sebalik Tangan Yang Menadah” from the shooting until editing the documentary. The experience of climbing the overhead parapet bridge located at the Mid Valley area near the ERL line during BTO’s placement was a good on-the-ground work experience.”

What was the best advice you received from your mentor/seniors? “Do not limit yourself to what you have studied; pursue your passion on what motivates you and continue learning directly or indirectly for personal and professional growth.”

WEALTH OF OPPORTUNITIES Scope International’s graduate programme is the gateway to understanding your future better, says its graduate trainees. What else did you gain? “This programme gave me a sense of belonging as I was part of a large batch of newcomers. This created a network of work-place colleagues and friends who all started together and grew together. When we later joined our respective departments, this network helped us keep in touch, share knowledge and experience while supporting each other. Another benefit is the pool of knowledge and experienced trainers, whom gave us their years of experience in the company and enabled us to be prepared for the work culture we will be a part of.”

What is the most interesting project you worked on?

THENI VIMAL

Senior Global Operations Officer, Ops Control (MIS), Market Wealth Securities Scope International (M) Sdn Bhd Standard Chartered

How has this programme benefited you? “It really prepared me for the work environment to understand my role in the company and how I can contribute. Going through the programme enabled me to smoothly transition into the company and learn tools that will enhance my performance at work as well as my career.”

“Under the Unleash Your Potential project, we learned about our personality, traits, strengths and weaknesses. And how to achieve our full potential by maximising our personality in our work and in collaboration with colleagues with different personalities. This was interesting, beneficial and unique at the same time for me.”

What was the toughest challenge you had to overcome? “I had to overcome my introvert personality as this was a large group and we had to connect with each other on a personal as well as a professional level. However, since the programme duration was sufficiently long enough with a variety of teambuilding activities, in time I grew to know and connect with all of them.”

What was the best advice you got? “There were so many that it is hard to narrow down! My mentors and trainers helped me by sharing their experience, advising me what to expect and how to overcome possible setbacks and hurdles. Best of all is their assurance that this is a company you can invest long term in, and no matter what, we can always reach out to them for assistance. No amount of education can replace such invaluable input that comes from experience.”

AN INVALUABLE EXPERIENCE Melissa Ong talks about her experience in the SMART programme at Sunway.

if any at all. Instead, many of the projects required me to interview and work with these corporate leaders. Now, I dare say I know and am able to personally connect with the upper management from my business unit as well as that from Sunway’s other business units.

MELISSA ONG ZHU WEI

Marketing Executive, Sunway Integrated Properties Sunway Berhad

How has this programme shaped you? “The rotational system of the SMART programme offers a comprehensive learning experience in the multiple departments. Although my degree is in commerce, I was exposed to technical knowledge in construction and property. Consequently, I was able to grasp processes, concepts and jargons faster, and participate actively in discussions while executing my responsibilities in the Marketing Department of Sunway Property. The programme also honed non-technical skills such as communication and leadership. Working in teams for projects, I picked up many leadership skills such as task delegation, time management and effective communication. Of course, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy; I also learnt how to balance fun and humour with hard work and perseverance. Indeed, one must remember to be positive and have confidence in all that we undertake to do!”

What are the other benefits of undergoing the programme? “A major benefit is the visibility to upper management. In a multilevel hierarchy typical of a large corporation, contact with senior management would be rare for a young executive,

This also offers widespread opportunities, especially due to its rotational nature. I had the chance to work in departments and places that I would otherwise know little about. Moreover, much is invested in grooming the SMARTans for non-technical skills, i.e. 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Project Management and Problem-Solving. The training, experience and network gained by SMARTans during this programme are truly invaluable.”

What was the most interesting project you worked on? “One of our many projects involved familiarising ourselves with Sunway Construction’s project in Kuala Lumpur. They were constructing a basement car park using a rare top-down method; basically building from the ground level first (topmost level of the basement) and working downwards. If the theory of top-down construction didn’t amaze me, the machinery used in this project certainly did. On site, I was astounded by the sheer size of some of the equipment. The project called for the use of a BG48 hydraulic bore pile machine, one of the biggest in the world! The boring tool goes down 100 metres into the earth and is 2.2 metres wide in diameter; you couldn’t see the bottom of the hole and would definitely not want to fall into it!”

What was the toughest challenge you had to overcome? “I was thrown out of my comfort zone into projects that required us to study various construction sites. As a matter of fact, my teammates and I spent one month on site, conducting daily site walks and studying construction methods. It was hot, dusty and tiring but definitely an eye-opening experience understanding for the first time, the amount of strategising and manpower that goes into a construction project. It also helped that my teammates were from engineering backgrounds and generously explained the structural, mechanical and architectural aspects of the project.”

Construction. His sharing and experience helped me discover fields that suit me and gain in-depth understanding of the industry.”

What was the most interesting project you worked on?

RICHARD OON MING HWANG

Assistant Manager – Project Sunway Iskandar Sdn Bhd

How has this programme benefited you? “Being a Sunway Managerial Advancement for Recruited Talents (SMART) graduate trainee is very rewarding. It gave me an opportunity to experience Sunway from multiple sides. My experience in Group Internal Audit Department (GIAD) and Group Human Resources (GHR) enabled me to understand the company from a holistic point of view. Through this, I had the opportunity to meet with people from various departments and top management, which allowed me to understand their routines and frame of mind. In addition, we also had the advantage of external trainings, job rotations and exposure, and mentoring sessions. My mentoring session was guided by Kwan Foh Kwai, Managing Director of Sunway

“In my very first company attachment with GIAD I was responsible for modelling the Sunway Standard Operating Procedure (SSOP) of the companies, documenting how and which information needed to be audited, and ensuring all current systems implemented are complied. In the event that they were not, I had to find out what are the frauds and improvements that can be done. I was later on assigned a special project with GHR. Together with my partner Joshua Ooi, we had to conduct investigations, collect data and analyse it, and provide solutions and recommendations in just two months! Then we had to make a presentation to the board of directors of Sunway Group. The experience in GIAD and GHR gave me the freedom to try out new things and take on a lot of important responsibilities. It was very empowering and gave me the confidence to explore new things as a young graduate.”

What was the best advice you received from your mentors? “My mentor Kwan shared his experience on how he made his way up through hard work, perseverance and life-long learning. That motivated me to also work hard, learn hard and play harder! From my senior coach, Akira Yabe, Director – Special Projects of Sunway Construction, I was motivated to have a passion for the construction industry.”

EYE-OPENING EXPERIENCE Danial Tan Kah Yong of UEM Group Berhad says being part of a leadership programme helped expose him to the corporate world.

What was the most interesting experience you had in the programme? “I had the opportunity to attend board meetings. Decision making in the corporate world is no easy task as it involves taking into account the interest of every stakeholder, and I am glad that I was able to observe how such decisions were made at first hand.”

DANIAL TAN KAH YONG Manager, Corporate Finance UEM Group Berhad

What sets this programme apart from others? “The Emerging Leadership Programme (ELP) has reinforced my view that leaders are made, not born. With this in mind, the programme has benefited me tremendously in terms of developing my leadership and decision-making skills. The programme provided a platform for me to explore and expand my interest. I managed to gain invaluable insights into the corporate world, which subsequently led me to shift my career from engineering to corporate finance.”

What was the toughest challenge you had to overcome? “My transition from engineering background into corporate finance. At the beginning, I did not even know some of the basic concepts such as “Present Value” and “Internal Rate of Return”. I had to do a lot of self-studying and attend training to improve myself so that I could be on the same page with everyone else. Nevertheless, I am very grateful for all the support and guidance from my colleagues and seniors in the department.”
