This will be the 3rd of 3 semesters of the ultimate nostalgia class, combining movie and music nostalgia from the mid-80’s to the end of the 90’s. We’ll learn about the history and business of film music and the process of creating a film score and soundtrack. We will see how the music enhances the images, how the images enhance the music and what happens to several of the most famous scenes in film history when you watch them without the accompanying music. You need not have taken Part 1 or 2 to enjoy Part 3.

Meet weekly to discuss the current events of the day. Each participant is encouraged to bring an item or topic currently in the public's eye. We are not limited to political items for discussion. Each session we will take a poll and select topics. Lively discussions will ensue, followed by resolutions. If you enjoy brisk and vigorous debate, this is for you. Class meets in Palm Center- Mediterranean Room.

VOTING RIGHTS IN THE US: 1787-PRESENT (ZOOM CLASS)

This series will focus on 40 innovative artists that created new sounds that captivated a generation, and whose influence endures five decades later. We will examine many genres including folk/ rock, surf music, pop/soul, psychedelic, country rock, pop, and rockabilly. Artists will include The Beach Boys, The Doors, Four Seasons, Roy Orbison, The Band, The Byrds, The Rascals, Simon Garfunkel, The Monkees, The Mamas The Papas, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, The Lovin’ Spoonful and others.

FEE: $30 This series will discuss the science behind: Alien Encounters; the Mysterious "Mummies" of Nazca, Peru; Noah's Flood; and the creation of our universe. The instructor has authored several science fiction and non-fiction books, lectured over 100 times around the country, and appeared on TV and radio shows including Coast-To-Coast.

FEE: $15 As always, the Great Decisions 2022 topics are extremely relevant: Changing Demographics, Outer Space, Climate Change, Russia and the U.S., Myanmar and ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations], The Quad Alliance [Japan, Australia, India, U.S.], Drug Policy in Latin America, Industrial Policy, and Biden's Agenda. A great surprise: our zoom discussions on such topics often are even better than our in-person discussions! Get the book in the Grand Learning Office ($21), read it, come to class, listen, think, ask questions, discuss, agree, disagree -- we always have civil discussions!

FEE: $20 The class will focus on our relationships with our fathers. Comparisons to To Me He Was Just a Dad by Joshua David Stein (suggested but not required reading) will aid discussion. Stein offers 40 short remembrances of famous fathers by their children. Also, best TV dad? Videos answer.

FEE: $20 Are you going to Ireland? Have you been to Ireland? Do you want to know something about Irish art history? In this course we will begin with the early art and architecture of Ireland starting with Neolithic dolmans and passage tombs. We will learn architectural styles and history of some of the major building in Ireland.
