Inflammation is a word most of us have heard of and experienced in one way or another during our lifetime. Inflammation affects us all. Whether you experienced inflammation due to an injury, illness or both; usually it’s not the most pleasant experience. Inflammation is a natural process triggered by the body’s immune system. Our immune system responds to a perceived threat such as an injury or illness with inflammation. The red, swollen tissue surrounding an injury or cut is the body’s immune system at work. Inflammation is designed to be healing. Acute or short term inflammation is also the mechanism the body uses to rid itself of foreign invaders like virus’ and bacteria including the common cold. Inflammation is designed to be a temporary response triggered by an injury or an encounter with a virus or bacteria. The inflammation created by your immune system is your body telling you it is aware something is wrong. Short term inflammation is good. It’s when we experience long term or chronic inflammation that we need to pay closer attention to what is going on in our body.
