Battlefields Day 1 ARRIVAL

Day 2 THE BATTLE OF VIGO BAY / SIR FRANCIS DRAKE ATTACKS ON VIGO On the evening of 22 October, 1702, the Anglo – Dutch fleet entered the Vigo Bay to attack the Spanish – French fleet. On the morning 29 June, 1589, Sir Francis Drake starts to attack Vigo with a fleet of more than 200 ships.

Day 3 BAIONA FORTRESS – SILLEIRO CAPE / ARRIVAL SPANISH SOLDIERS FROM CUBA In the fortress of Baiona was imprisoned Afonso Henriques the first King of Portugal.

Day 4 GUIMARAES – THE ORIGIN OF PORTUGAL Afonso Henriques defeated his mother Coutess Teresa of Portugalat the battle of Sao Mamede. Coutess Teresa was imprisoned and exiled by her son.

Day 5 TUI – VALENÇA Because they are villages separated by the river Miño, the border line between Portugal and Spain, in their street there are many war histories.

Because of the battles for the European, even world domination, involving Spain, Portugal, England and France, the city of Vigo played a very important role due to its geographical situation. Castles & Fortresses Day 1 ARRIVAL

Day 2 CASTRO FORTRESS / SOTOMAYOR CASTLE The fortress of the Castro is located in the city of Vigo and was built in the XVII century. The Castle of Soutmaior is a medieval castle built in the XII century.

Day 3 VILLASOBROSO CASTLE / SAN SEBASTIAN FROTRESS The castle of Villasobroso played an important in the medieval civil wars. The ruins of the fortress of San Sebastian are very close to the hotel.

Day 4 BAIONA FORTRESS – A GUARDA FORTRESS The fortress of Baiona, erected between the XI and the XVI centuries, is protected by a 3km circle of walls. And the fortress of A Guarda was used in the last war between Spain and Portugal.

Day 5 CASTRO CALDELAS CASTLE A medieval castle, on top of a mountain, dominating the surrounding area.

Day 6 TUI FORTRESS – VALENÇA FORTRESS The valenÇa fortress was built to counterbalance Tui across the river Miño, the natural frontier between Spain and Portugal.

Day 7 GUIMARAES CASTLE In the XII century the first King of Portugal was living there.

Notes Because of the geographical situation of the city of Vigo and the Spanish military conflicts the coastal villages mainly and a few from the interior were forced to built castles and fortresses for a better defence. The construction period was from the XII until the XVII century. For people passionate of this kind of buildings is an exceptional opportu- nity to travel in time to middle ages.

Day 2 TUI The XIII century cathedral served as both cathedral and fortress.

Day 3 BRAGA – VIANA DO CASTELO The Neo Byzantine church of Santa Luzia is a very beautiful place of pilgrimage.

Day 4 SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA It has been attracting pilgrims for more than a thousand years.

Day 5 RIBADAVIA Its origin is closely linked to the Jewish Community.

Day 6 PONTEVEDRA – POIO In the city of Pontevedra Our Lady of Fatima appears for the last time to Lucia. Besides in the monastery of Poio there is one of the most impressive libraries of Spain.

Day 2 CASTRO VIGO – CASTRO MONTE FACHO (IRON AGE) The Castro of Vigo is an authentic open air museum in the center of the city. The Castro of the Facho mountain has not at all the roman influence.

Day 3 SANTA TECLA - CAMINHA (IRON AGE) The Castro of Santa Tecla is one of the largest one in Galicia and is located is the most impressive location.

Day 4 BAÑOS DE BANDE (AQUIS QUERQUENNIS) ROMAN TIMES It is a roman military encampment built between the I and the II century b.c.

Day 5 CASTRO BAROÑA (IRON AGE) It is located on a small, rugged peninsula that reaches out into the sea.

Day 2 PONTEVEDRA – POIO (AMERICA) In the village of Poio you can visit the Colombus Museum in an ancient Colombus’ family house.

Day 3 BAIONA (AMERICA) This village was the first place in the Old Continent to have news from the new world.

Day 4 VIANA DO CASTELO (CONGO) Viana do Castelo was a historical point of departure in the Portuguese Age of discovery.

Day 5 RIBADAVIA (WINE) The very first wine from Europe to reach the Americas was the Ribeiro produced in this region.

Day 3 BAIONA The Baiona village was site here due to a royal privilege issued by the Catholic Kings in the XV century.

Day 4 ONS ISLANDS It is the main island of a small archipelago in the coast of Pontevedra.

Day 5 PENEDA – GÊRES This was the first protected area to be founded in Portugal in 1971 and it is the only National Park in the country.

Day 2 CORRUBEDO DUNE COMPLEX – UMIA INTERTIDAL COMPLEX Corrubedo is the home of the largest dune in Galicia. This is one of the most important areas of Galicia from an environmental point of view.

Day 3 COSTA DA VELA – CABO UDRA It is a coastal sector with rugged landforms at the entrance to the Ría de Vigo and the Ría de Pontevedra.

Day 4 SAN SIMÓN COVE The final inlet of the Ría de Vigo, almost eight kilometres long and four wide, is reduced to 700 metres in the strait of Rande.

Day 5 RIBEIRA SACRA – CAÑON DEL SIL The Ribeira Sacra region comprises the lands bathed by the Rivers Sil and Miño, in the area of inland Galicia where these two rivers meet.

Day 6 BAIXO MIÑO This area is very important in terms of conservation of wetlands.
