Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy
of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the towns and villages in and around the Evesham
The Worcestershire Grapevine
& Pershore area and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Oh, for goodness sake! What a lot of noise, thought Montgomery. Little did he know that when he ate biscuits, he crunched just as 06/07/2017 11:05 loudly, if not louder! Anyway, he was tucking into his first proper meal, since Dartington had come to stay.
_2017.indd 1
Stupid little fluff ball! Montgomery was thinking, I’d like to cough you up, and out of the window! Montgomery started to eat, trying to ignore the noise. Helena kept singing to Dartington. Montgomery thought she was so in love with him that she had forgotten about her beloved Monty. Montgomery watched as he rubbed his cheeks against all the furniture. Everything smelt different in Montgomery’s world, thanks to that ginger fluff ball’ (Story 2, The Early Days - Book 1).
The Continuing Adventures of Montgomery & Dartington is available in all book shops - on the shelf or to order - and online at £5.99 at www.hive.co.uk, ebay and Amazon.

Summer is now well and truly with us, and the children are on holiday, so no doubt many of you will be heading off to sunnier climes for your holidays. Have a wonderful time, and don't forget your sunscreen! Having just returned from ten wonderful days in Malta, I can highly recommend it as a holiday destination - the weather is perfect, the food fabulous, the people extremely welcoming, and . . . they drive on the correct (left!) side of the road! If you are staying at home this year, there are plenty of things happening over the next few weeks, starting with the Welland Steam Rally at the end of July. For the art enthusiasts Worcestershire Open Studios has a weekend of events at the end of August. And as usual, there are plenty of choices in the What's On page. Also if you are staying at home, do take a minute to read the West Mercia Police article on page 10 which gives lots of tips on how to enjoy the summer - safely!

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall . . .
T
he earliest mirrors were probably pools of dark, still water. Polished bronze mirrors were used by the Ancient Egyptians from 3000 BC. Aztec mirrors were made from obsidian, and were linked to Texcatilipoca, a deity whose name translates as Smoking Mirror. He was the Lord of the Night and used mirrors to cross between the earthly realm and the underworld. The first glass mirrors were invented by the Romans in the first century. It wasn’t until the sixteenth century that glass workers in Venice produced mirrors with a tin-mercury backing. These were very expensive due to the cost of materials and the difficulty of transporting them. The cost of one mirror would have financed the building of a large naval ship.
In 1665, glass workers from the Venetian island of Murano were called to France to start mirror production at the court of the Sun King Louis XIV. This became the legendary Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. The silvered glass mirrors used today were invented by a German chemist called Justus von Liebig in 1835. He was able to create a thin layer of silver on glass through the chemical reduction of silver nitrate. This made high quality glass mirrors affordable to the masses. Mirrors feature in fairy-tales and legends where they are believed to have magical properties or be portals to other worlds. The real Snow White was believed to be a Bavarian Baroness whose father remarried in 1743. The new stepmother favoured the children from her first marriage and received a mirror as a gift from her new husband. It was
referred to as a ‘Talking Mirror’ and can be seen at the Spessart Museum in Lohr Castle. There are superstitions involving birth, death and mirrors. Mirrors used to be covered when a child was born so it couldn’t be spirited away by the fairy folk. In Victorian times, when the dead were laid out, all the mirrors in the house were covered to prevent the soul getting trapped in one. The custom still persists when Jewish families sit shiva following the death of a loved one. Remember that if you break a mirror you can prevent the Roman seven years bad luck curse by picking up all the pieces and placing them in a paper or fabric bag. Bury the bag in soil or throw it in a fastflowing river to take away the misfortune.

AUGUST: Road Safety Awareness National Road Victim Month National Road Victim Month is held annually in August to remember people that have been killed or injured on our roads. As well as honouring people that have been lost and injured, it is also a great opportunity to raise awareness to make our roads safer. Children in the Summer Holidays August is usually a month of sunshine and summer fun, but it can have a darker side, when it comes to road traffic accidents. This may be your child's first summer in which you have allowed them to go out with their friends. As much as you would like them to apply the Green Cross Code before crossing the road, you can't guarantee their safety when you're not around. During this month, we will see an increased number of children on the streets and a possible increase in irate drivers who are not patient at crossings. It is important to teach your child the proper way to cross the road, but it is equally as important that drivers are aware of the potential dangers around them. Careless and reckless driving can result in an endorsement on your licence, from 3 points to 11 which can stay on your licence for 4 to 11 years. Motorway Drivers Be Aware It's not just children who are at risk over the month of August - many people will be taking holidays around the country and using the motorways to get there. Often the car will be full of luggage, children and sometimes pets. This can be distracting for you as a driver, and may cause harm to yourself, your passengers, and other road users.
over long distances. Deaths and serious injuries are 50% more likely to occur due to driver fatigue. What to be aware of when driving in rural areas The sun's out and you want to have a day out with friends or family with a trip out into the countryside or beach. So you all jump in the car and head out. On your journey you come across a tractor and trailer with a load of hay/straw and/or a combine harvester travelling at a slow speed on a country road. As frustrating as that is, being behind a slow moving farm vehicle for two miles is the same as waiting in two sets of traffic lights in the city. What's the rush? Stay back, and only when safe to do so (unless they have pulled over) overtake. Further up the lane you can see a couple of horse riders wearing high visibility jackets (good practice to wear in all weathers as easier to be seen). You don't want to spook the horses which could cause an accident, so you slow down before reaching them and when safe to do so overtake, at slow speed, allowing for plenty of room. If a rider signals for you to overtake, check first, then make your own judgement. As you continue your journey you notice a number of motorcyclists out enjoying the good weather. Remember to look for motorbikes, check your mirrors and allow room for them to overtake you if safe to do so. You arrive at your chosen destination safe and sound, and enjoy a lovely summer day because you took on board the tips for safe driving on rural roads.
Try to minimise distractions before you set out on the road by making it clear to other passengers the importance of remaining focussed whilst driving. Taking short breaks to get fresh air and refocus is also recommended when driving

How writing your Will could help the Hospice
A
month-long Will writing campaign led by St Richard’s Hospice is set to return this September.
“All the participating solicitors are giving up their time free of charge to help the hospice – we are very grateful for their generous support.”
During the hospice’s Write a Will Month campaign, a trio of Worcestershire solicitors firms will offer people the opportunity to write a simple Will for £95, or a double Will for £150 – with 100 per cent of the money donated to St Richard’s.
It is important to write a Will because in situations when a person dies without one, rules dictate how the individual’s estate is allocated which may not be as they would wish. It is also important to update a Will if personal circumstances change – for example if someone marries, divorces or adopts a child.
The firms taking part are Harrison Clark Rickerbys and Scaiff LLP Solicitors, in Worcester, and Kitcat and Co Solicitors, based in Malvern. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of writing a Will – which is a document setting out how people want their money, property and possessions to be distributed after their death. Ria Simons, Fundraiser at St Richard’s, said: “Writing a Will should not be a daunting experience, but we understand it is often a process many people don’t like to think about.
St Richard’s Hospice is also encouraging people to consider leaving a gift in their Will, after they have provided for family and friends, although there is no obligation to do so. To take part, simply call your preferred solicitor and make an appointment quoting the “St Richard’s Hospice Write a Will Scheme”.
To contact Harrison Clark Rickerbys, based in Deansway, Worcester, call Rachael Wheeler on 01905 678554 or email rwheeler@hcrlaw.com For Scaiff LLP, based in Foregate Street, Worcester, call Kimberley Gaffey on 727700 or email kgaffey@scaiff.co.uk And to reach Kitcat and Co Solicitors, in Avenue Road, Malvern, call David Kitcat on 01684 342173 or email dk@ kitcat.legal For further details of participating solicitors call the Fundraising team on 01905 763963, or visit www.strichards.org.uk/event/ writeawill/ St Richard’s Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with life-limiting illnesses and supports their loved ones. Each year the hospice team supports more than 3,000 patients, family members and bereaved in Worcestershire.
“During our Write a Will Month we hope to encourage people to take the first step and make an appointment with one of our participating solicitors.
The hospice strives to provide the best medical, practical, emotional and social support they can to help people live life to the fullest, as independently as they can, for as long as they can.
“Once you have a Will in place, you also have peace of mind to know if you died, everything would be organised for your loved ones.
St Richard’s is an independent charity and is grateful for all donations to help it continue its work.

Drink Your Way Thin? I
f you’ve been interested in fitness and health for more than a minute, then you know by now how important drinking plenty of water is for getting your body into top shape. But do you drink enough water? And is it really going to impact your results? Why Water Matters Your body is made up of 60% water, which is incredible when you stop and really think about this fact. All day long you are constantly losing water by sweating and going to the bathroom – and this water must be replenished in order to keep your body in healthy, working order. Many health authorities believe in the 8x8 theory: drink 8 (8oz) glasses of water throughout the day, or roughly half a gallon. However, a growing sector of fitness and health professionals are speaking out against this theory, stating that it is simply too little to keep you properly hydrated. We advise people on our transformations to drink the following: DRINK AT LEAST 2 LITRES OF WATER EVERY DAY Get yourself a 2 litre bottle of water and make sure you drink that every day. Caffeine dehydrates you, so if you’re drinking tea/coffee then you need to
24
drink more water. Also, you need to drink more if exercising to replace fluids lost. General rule of thumb – drink 1 litre per 25kgs of bodyweight: if you weigh 50kgs, then drink 2 litres of water per day. Those behind the movement to drink more than 8x8 per day are stating that the only way to truly stay hydrated is by sipping on water constantly throughout the day, and by making the effort to drink water when one doesn’t feel the signs of thirst. Studies have come out that seem to prove that drinking more water throughout the day leads to better brain functioning, fewer headaches and physical performance. Conversely, when you are operating in a state of mild dehydration you will experience diminished brain functioning, more frequent headaches and a decline in physical performance. Does More Water = More Fat Loss? Yes, it is quite likely that drinking more water will facilitate faster fat loss results. This is primarily due to two factors: An increase in metabolism: Studies show that drinking water temporarily boosts metabolism for an hour or so. Drinking cold water will spike your metabolism even higher. This means more calories burned, and more pounds lost.
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
A reduction in appetite: Staying properly hydrated helps to reduce dehydration signs that are often mistaken for hunger. It is also a viable strategy to drink a full glass of water immediately before a meal in order to reduce the calorie intake of that meal, leading to lower overall calorie intake for the day. Hydration and Health Staying hydrated is going to help you lose fat quicker, but that’s not the only benefit that you will experience. The following are all health improvements that you have to look forward to when drinking water throughout your day: • Lower Risk of Cancer • Reduction in Constipation • Decreased Risk of Kidney Stones • Healthier Skin and Less Acne It’s clear that drinking water throughout the day is an important part of being healthy and reaching your fitness goals. One of the best ways to make sure that you meet your hydration goals is to keep a large water bottle with you at all times, and to refill it every time that it is empty.
are marketed to fit, active people, but always be aware of the calorie and sugar count before deciding if you should include it in your diet. The Surprises of Soldeu Mountain
article & photos by Pamela Green
I
f like my husband Michael, and I, you like to travel and explore Europe, then I'm sure you have heard of Andorra. It is a small country about the same size as Dartmoor, and is nestled between France and Spain, in the Pyrenees. Most people will know it as a fantastic place to ski, but it is also a spectacular place for sight seeing. Everywhere you look you will see snow top peaks, cable cars, ski lifts, and fantastic scenery. Between the months of June and September, when the snow has disappeared it is a breathtaking place; everywhere you look you will see majestic mountains and stunning views. Beautiful chalets precariously perch on ledges half way up the mountains, and large birds of prey glide effortlessly on the warm thermals. Towards the end of our holiday we try to leave a few days for a visit to Andorra to see the spectacular sights. There is always one cable car that works all year round, but because of breakdowns or weather we have never managed to take advantage of this, that was until this holiday.
26
The cable car was working and open to thrill seekers, so we climbed aboard. We had longed for the opportunity to see the fantastic sights from the top of the Soldeu mountain, and we weren't disappointed. We found the car ride exhilarating and thrilling, all 2,250 metres of it, and what a surprise we had when we reached the summit. We found the place buzzing with thrill seeking mountain bike riders. The cable car lift had special racks on the front of each car for the mountain bikes, and the riders all had cameras strapped onto their helmets to film their daring rides. After having a sedate 20-minute ride in the cable car they took off down the track at tremendous hair-raising speeds, and we were told they would reach the bottom in 10 minutes. The incredibly steep track offers challenging elements, with loads of jumps and surprises. For their thrills the riders are expecting fun Blue Runs,* and technical steep Black Runs, and amazingly they do reach the bottom.
From the cable car we followed the path up to a platform where there was a cafe, the Club House Soldeu and a few shops, but what amazed us most was a nine hole golf course. This unique golf coarse is 2,250 metres above sea level, and is a well designed course that is a challenge for any player, irrespective of their handicap. For a few Euros you can use the driving range and hit golf balls into clear air. The Club Soldeu looses around 5,000 balls every season. Visitors can rent equipment and take lessons from a trained instructor. The course is open from July until September, from 10am until 7pm. Whether you're an adrenalin junkie or a serious golfer, Andorra is the place for you. *Editor's note: ski runs - in this case, bike runs - are rated according to difficulty by the colours Green, Blue and Black - green being the easiest, and black the hardest.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
Bugs & Pests
IN YOUR GARDEN
W
ith all the nice weather over the last few months pests are flourishing and are becoming more obvious. Many people come to me with a pest, because apart from trying to flick through books till they hit on a photo that looks the same, they have no other way to identify it. The way I was taught all those years ago at Pershore Horticultural College, was to look first, as a lot of pests are named (common names) because of what they look like or
28
what plant they are on. For example greenfly are green! Woolly aphid has a waxy wool-like covering over them. Others are named because of the plants they are on rather than their looks, such as the lily beetle which is bright red, or Solomon’s seal sawfly (Solomon’s seal is the plant) which is a grey caterpillar-like larvae that can strip the plant in a matter of days, leaving only the parts that are too tough for them to digest. Using this method first will save hours of looking through photos on the internet.
How best to control them There are many ways, from chemical to organic. Here are a few pointers that might help.: yy Some people believe in just leaving them be, and where possible I would agree. However, the Solomon’s seal sawfly for example, would mean you would never see the plant as every year it would be attacked. yy Organically there are a few things that can be sprayed which are natural deterrents, or there are plants you can put with other plants, such as planting garlic and chives next to carrots will mask the smell of the carrots and help prevent carrot fly. yy Pick the pests off. This is fine but very time consuming, and if you’re a keen gardener you would need to check every few days as catching a pest early means easier control or less chemicals to use. To give you an example: an aphid can become a reproducing adult (no male needed) in a week and then can produce up to 5 offspring per day for up to 30 days. So they can multiply very fast. yy The most active deterrent is chemical and there are many
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
varieties on the market. It is always cheaper to buy the concentrated form and mix this up yourself; be sure to read the label as there are two forms: contact and systemic. Without going into too much detail, the main points are: contact kills bugs on contact, which is fine if there are only a few which are not likely to come back. Systemic on the other hand, kills bugs that feed off the plants they are on and are in hard to reach places - under leaves for example. This then is taken into the plant so that each time a bug fancies a nibble, the chemical is in the plant ready to do its thing. Jobs in the garden for August: yy Dead-head bedding plants to keep them flowering right up to the end of the year. yy Dead-head lilies for a better flower display next year as more goodness goes back into the bulb rather than into seed. yy Trim your lavender plants after
they have finished flowering to keep them compact as they do not sprout well on brown wood. yy Cut back faded perennials to keep borders tidy this will give some a second flowering time and stop some from seeding everywhere. yy As your penstemon flowers fade, cut them back to just above a leaf to encourage more flowers.
yy Collect ripened seed and store for next year. Leaving some seed heads in place can be attractive and allows the plant to self-seed in the surrounding soil. yy Take photos so you know where herbaceous plants are when they die back and how full your bed is, as it is easy to forget and buy more!
yy Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flourish of tasty leaves that you can harvest before the frost. yy Prune summer flowering shrubs once they have finished blooming. yy Prune your wisteria after flowering by removing all the whippy side-shoots from the main branch framework to about 20cm from their base (about five leaves from the main stem). yy Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they've finished flowering (unless they are repeat-flowerers in which case leave them).

Mabel & Monty
A
t Evesham Cats Protection, we think adopting a rescue cat is brilliant thing to do, however we are a bit biased. Kelly and her family adopted two kittens from the centre earlier this year; one was from a large multi-cat household, and the other was one of the stray kittens rescued from the Twyford roundabout. Here is their story, so far. After losing our original cat, Simba, last year at grand age of 17 years old, our home was empty without him. So we decided that a visit to Cats Protection was needed, as there are so many unwanted cats and kittens about and we could offer one or perhaps two, a home. We went to CP Evesham and had a lovely chat with the staff who showed us around. We found a beautiful little kitten sitting all on her own, looking very sad. Her siblings had all recently been rehomed and she was the last one. She looked so tiny and lost sitting there on her own; we guessed that as she was the runt of the litter she wasn't the most popular choice. We were advised that she would need extra love and attention as she was
very timid. Little did we know, we had just fallen in love with this little kitten, but we had decided by then that we wanted two cats, and that's when we met Monty. Monty chose us. He is the most loving kitten you could possibly wish for. From the moment we met him, he was purring and wanting cuddles. We also thought he would make a fantastic brother to our little black and white friend, who we had called Mabel. Cats Protection worked together over the following week to bring Monty and Mabel together. They advised us on introducing the two of them to each other, to their new home, and about caring for the kittens. They recommended a good vet, helped with booking them in for their vaccinations, and have been of great support with any questions we had about settling in these two amazing kittens. The staff made sure that both kittens were kept calm and as stress free as possible. You can tell how passionate they are about the cats. From the moment we got them home and they met for the first time they have been inseparable.

Monty
The bond they have is amazing; they follow each other everywhere, sleep in the same bed, eat together, play together, it is wonderful. They have started to go outside and explore now. Mabel is still small, so can not jump up onto the fence yet, but Monty will go exploring, but not too far, and should he go too far, Mabel will call him back. I try and get back to CP Evesham once a month with donations of newspapers, blankets and food for the new cats in care, and of course, keep the staff updated on the progress of Monty and Mabel. We have been very blessed to have two beautiful, loving kittens and I would recommend anyone thinking of having a new pet to consider adopting one from a rescue centre. We enjoying hearing how the adopted cats and kittens are doing in their new homes, so if you have a story about a CP cat please email it to evesham.cpl@virgin.net. If Kelly's update has made you consider a cat from Evesham Cats Protection please pop in or call 01386 833343 for enquires.

ottega’s wines and drinks productions continue to please and receive awards. Their liqueurs are excellent in cocktails, too. Fior di Latte (15% vol) is white chocolate cream. This liqueur has a good bouquet of white chocolate, plus a soft and velvety mouthfeel. Gianduia Chocolate Cream (17% vol) is a creamy production that has an impressive aroma of Gianduia chocolate, which was created in Piedmont, Italy, during 1806. The bouquet of cocoa and nuts is typical of Gianduia. The sweetness of milk cream makes this a very popular choice, for many. Latte Macchiato (15% vol) has a blend of carefully – selected coffee beans to give the best aroma and taste. After the beans are crushed they are soaked in water and alcohol for 15 days, being stirred daily, then filtered and stabilised. The intense bouquet of coffee and milk follows through to the mouthfeel and palate sensation, perfectly. Crema di Limoncino (15% vol) has Sicilian lemon peels infused with alcohol, which gives the liqueur an intense and fresh bouquet of ripe lemons, plus harmonious milk and cream. Other Bottega liqueur productions include Nero (15%) vol). Chocolate is reputedly ‘food of the gods’ and this production has many devotees. The dark chocolate sensations and the richness are perfect for chocoholics. Pistacchio Cream (17% The Worcestershire Grapevine
vol), with pistachios exclusively harvested in Sicily, is a favourite with numerous liqueur connoisseurs. For all information and availability www.bottegaspa.com Staibano produces award-winning Amalfi Smooth (Crema di Limone). This light (17% vol) Italian premium lemon cream liqueur utilises high-quality Amalfi lemons IGP. Flamboyant Napolitan Don Vincenzo Staibano owned lemon groves and commenced productions during 1932. These productions continue today by Cesco Amodio, Don Vincenzo’s great-grandson. A fresh and natural aroma greets the nasal senses, enticing to the smooth, delicious and refreshing mouthfeel, followed by superb pleasure on the palate. From the beginning the Staibano family have always enjoyed drinking Amalfi Smooth over ice, with fresh basil. Many people take pleasure in concocting various spritzers, perhaps with ginger beer, ice and fresh mint, for example. Staibano drinks’ retailers include Harvey Nichols and online at Amazon. The website has all details, including fabulous cocktail recipes. www.staibano.com As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

Three quarters of West Midlands SMEs have no plan to deal with business disruption
A
staggering 91% of West Midlands SME business owners have no plan to help them cope with disruption, according to a new study by top 15 UK chartered accountants Haines Watts. Yet while worries around disruption are almost universal (91% express fears), just one in ten (9%) leaders have a plan. Over a third are not acting proactively – admitting they haven’t thought about disruption or have thought about it but not done anything (36%), instead waiting to see what disruption brings, and then hoping to respond after the event. SME’s most common concern was government-related disruption, including legislation and regulatory changes that will impact the way they do business. More traditional forms of disruption also place highly on West Midlands business owners’ list of concerns, including competition from larger businesses entering the market
(34%) and changing customer expectations (38%). Darren Holdway, regional managing partner at Haines Watts comments: “Brexit has distracted UK business owners from the very real threat of industry disruption. While fears around regulatory disruption are exceptionally high, business owners may not be concerned enough about the kind of disruption that will threaten their very business model.” The type of disruption that makes headlines the most – that of radical new business models – featured comparatively low down in West Midlands business owners’ fears, with just a third (32%) citing this as a concern. Fear over new technologies disrupting markets is even lower at 21%. Darren Holdway continues: “It’s hard to envisage how threats like new technology could unfold when the challenges they pose are only partly visible, but that doesn’t mean that preparation can’t get under
way. There are steps every business can and should take to prepare the ground for the changes that will come. “Although the pace of disruption has picked up, the temptation to bury our heads in the sand and stick to what we’re comfortable with is not new. In 1996 Bill Gates wrote that ‘we always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten’. Those timelines are even shorter now and the danger of underestimating disruption is greater than ever.” Motivation and ambition While disruption can be intimidating, and the difficulty of preparing concerning, it can also be positive. Over a third (36%) of business owners say that disruption makes them more determined. Disruption could be good for business owners, by keeping them on their toes and ensuring they stay ahead of the game. Similarly, 32% say that it makes them more ambitious.

orcestershire Open Studios provides the public with the unique opportunity to venture into otherwise unseen creative spaces and talk directly to artists about their creative process and inspiration. Find out about their fascinating techniques, variety of materials and fantastic artwork. Jackie Cunliffe, a watercolour artist from Hinton on the Green is just one of those passionate artists, constantly expanding her knowledge and technique, she says, “I create watercolours inspired by my travels in South East Asia, focusing on the cultures, colours and textures of the areas. I have moved from traditional watercolours to more experimental paintings using a textured background and additional powder pigments.” Now in its third year, Worcestershire Open Studios 2017 showcases a diverse collection of original arts and crafts made by over 200 Worcestershire artists – from drawing, painting, printmaking and photography to ceramics, jewellery, textiles and mixed media. With such huge choice and so many varied styles, there’s something to suit every taste. Don’t miss the wonderfully quirky work of Ian Gibson and Gloria Norman in Badsey. Ian’s stunning surreal paintings and prints of unexpected scenes complement Gloria’s exciting ceramics beautifully. Whilst Ian uses landscape and architecture to create compositions of mystery and imagination, Gloria crafts colourful bowls and jugs in high-fired stoneware and amazing birds such as the extinct Dodo.

This August bank holiday you can discover stunning arts and craft created in Worcestershire when artists open their studios, homes and shared spaces for three days at 70 different locations across the county.
To extend the experience and help you get stuck in, some of the participating artists are also offering refreshments, demon-strations and have a go sessions. One of the venues offering interactive sessions is Honeybourne Pottery in Evesham: “We wish to welcome visitors to our studio in order to share the many benefits of working with clay. We will be running demonstrations and even offering people the chance to get hands-on and throw their own pot on the wheel! In addition, a range of our hand-crafted ceramics will be on sale at reduced prices and information provided about the many classes and events we run.” If you’re looking for a venue exhibiting the work of a range of different artists, then why not pop into Birlingham Village Hall, just outside Pershore, where ten local artists are presenting their diverse collection. The West Midlands N Gauge Club Hills”, which has been seen at many local exhibitions including TINGS. This was built over 20 years ago, rescued by the club and rebuilt using materials used at the time it was originally constructed.
T
he West Midlands N Gauge Club was formed in 1995, and we meet the 1st and 3rd Saturdays in each month at our base in Tipton. We are a small and friendly club with an interest in N gauge modelling, although individual members also model in other gauges as well. We have four N gauge layouts at the club. “Waterstock” is a 22ft long exhibition layout that has been to shows like The International N Gauge Show [TINGS], Worcester, and Warley Show at the NEC. Although set in the 1960s steam era, it is available for members to run any of their stock on club days. Also available to members and guests on club days is our 6ft exhibition layout “Tipton

"Gibben Quarry" is our new small exhibition layout and is making its public debut at TINGS at Leamington exhibition centre in September this year. It then will be our third operational N gauge layout based at the club. “Waterstock” requires 6 operators when it is at exhibitions but "Gibben Quarry" can be operated by one person. Our 4th layout is under construction and will be an 11 foot layout based on Water Orton. The baseboards are built but now comes the job of track laying, wiring and building the scenery. This will be our 3rd attempt to build a model of Water Orton; the other two were over complicated, both in terms of track plan and electrics. There is more about our layouts on our website, together with directions of how to get to our club.
We always welcome new members and we are close to Tipton Station, bus routes and the M5. We already have members from Shropshire, West Midlands and Worcestershire. You do not need to be skilled in any aspect of model railways - you may just want to come and meet like-minded people. If you would like a free copy of our newsletter or more information please contact: Ken Jones, Chairman 0121 777 7062 westernsultan@hotmail.co.uk www.wmngaugeclub.co.uk Or visit us at: Tipton Green Methodist Church Hall (rear entrance and upstairs)

Pesky Fleas & Troublesome Ticks The warmer weather is upon us, which means we are out walking our dogs more, and our cats are out exploring in the sunshine. It also means that external parasites (fleas and ticks) are more prevalent.
Parasite Prevention & Travel Advice preventative treatment regime and regular grooming of your pet will help with early detection and treatment. Please contact the surgery for appropriate advice on treatment and prevention.
Did you know that only 5% of a flea problem is found on your pet? The remaining 95% is around your house. A single female flea can lay up to 1,500 eggs on a monthly basis. Once these eggs hatch into larvae, they will move away from the light and go deeper into you carpets, between floorboards and under the furniture. These larvae will change into pupae which if left untreated can survive dormant in the environment, without a pet, for up to one year. We are seeing an increasing number of patients at the surgery that are being pestered by these external parasites. There are several effective ways of preventing and treating fleas and ticks, including spot-ons, collars and a very effective tablet that gives three months protection. A strict The Worcestershire Grapevine
Travelling Abroad – What you need to know The Pet Travel Scheme was introduced to keep the UK free from rabies and other exotic diseases. It allows pet dogs, cats and ferrets to enter the UK from recognised countries without the need for quarantine, as long as they meet certain rules. The scheme also allows UK pet owners to travel with their dogs, cats and ferrets to other countries.
It is very important to discuss the control of both internal (worms) and external parasites with your vet prior to travelling aboard with your pet. For up-to-date information, please take a look at the DEFRA website. We would be happy to advise you on the process involved with getting your pet a passport or the treatments required prior to travel. Please contact the surgery for appropriate advice.
Changes in the Pet Travel Scheme mean that it is now even easier to get your pets their own passport so that they can go on holiday with you. They are required to have a registered microchip, vaccination against Rabies and a pet passport.

Broadway Museum & Art Gallery Summer Exhibition: EMBROIDERED BODIES FROM THE ASHMOLEAN
T
his summer Broadway Museum and Art Gallery is pleased to be displaying some of the amazing pieces of clothing that makes up the Ashmolean Museum’s rich textiles collection. The Embroidered Bodies exhibition takes you on a journey through Egypt, the Greek Islands, Saudi Arabia, Central Asia, Pakistan, India and China. Pieces on display include an eighteenthcentury Englishman’s waistcoat through to a Japanese coat from the opening years of the twentieth century. Aimée Payton, Eastern Art Administrator at the Ashmolean Museum and curator of the exhibition said: “We have some stunning embroideries in our stores, many of which have never been on display before so I am very excited to share these wonderful pieces with visitors to The Broadway Museum.”

There are hundreds of different ways to make an embroidery stitch. Some techniques, such as chain stitch, are universal and mastered by embroiderers everywhere. Others are often only found in specific countries. The stitches chosen can be our first clue in revealing the story of each garment. Delicate stitches exquisitely depict animals, flowers, people, and patterns that can provide fascinating information about the wearer. Aimée said: "I am fascinated by how much the choice of stitches can tell us. Stitches can help identify where something was made, who wore it, and often why. I am drawn to garments that do not seem to fit the story exactly as they usually have a complicated story. Maybe they were made for a traveller, for the export market, or have been altered to update the style."
Come and discover the threads of the tales within the stitches and unravel the meaning behind the embroidered garments for yourselves! During the summer holidays there will also be children’s trails taking place on various themes relating to all the displays in the museum. The exhibition runs until 10th September 2017. Normal admission charges apply: Adults £5 (16+); Family £10; Children (5-15 years) £2; Under 5s free. For more information telephone 01386 859047 or email: events@ broadwaymuseum.org.uk
Embroidered Bodies tells many stories, giving an insight into how these beautifully stitched garments would have been made and worn.
