Hello, and welcome to the March edition of the Ledbury Focus.

And now for something completely different! Last week I was treated to a trip to London to see Mamma Mia at the Novello Theatre in Covent Garden, and it was absolutely brilliant! If you enjoyed the movie or are just an Abba fan, I highly recommend you go and see this show, which is without a doubt the best live show I’ve ever seen. The singing was excellent, the costumes stunning, the dancing fantastic and the finale was incredibly exhilarating, with the entire audience on their feet, singing, dancing and clapping along to the music – for at least 10 to 15 minutes. In a word … spectacular. So if you are planning a trip to the capital or have a special birthday/anniversary coming up, treat yourself to a truly memorable experience.

As you can see from the front cover, and this page, we’ve made some changes to the look of the Focus – you’ll see other changes as you go through this month’s magazine. I hope you like them, and would welcome your comments.

Last month we introduced the Wordsearch competition and have had an overwhelming response to it. As we go to print before the closing date of the competition, we will publish the name of the winner in the April magazine. A View from the Fields enthusiastic vet student helping me. Perhaps I wasn’t clear enough in my explanation of exactly where to cut but I had hoped that they would stop BEFORE the scalpel sliced into my right thumb. The mortification on the student’s face had to wait as the calf wriggled out of its mother’s side and flopped onto the clean straw below. As the calf took its first breaths of frosty morning air I assessed the damage and quietly began closing the uterus, suppressing the temptation to ‘slip’ with the needle towards the apologetic student’s quaking hands. The awkward silence was eventually broken by the farmer asking if the student wanted to name the calf. A few generic, flower orientated suggestions were discussed before, with an innocent smile, the farmer’s wife piped up, “What about Slasher?!”

ith lambing and Spring calving in full flow, the local farming community are surviving on sugary cups of tea and the hope of a bit less rain tomorrow. Whilst there are long, lonely, anti-social shifts to be spent in the lambing sheds, it can be a hugely rewarding time of year to be working with stock, though things don’t always go to plan. Bringing new life into the world is always a privilege and as you watch the freshly turned out lambs bouncing around the fields it is a great opportunity to reflect on the dedication and passion of our British farmers.

The high welfare standards which they uphold ensure the sustainable supply of healthy, local produce for our tables, as well as maintaining the beautiful countryside in which we live. We should all be proud to buy British and in so doing, support the industry on which our local community is built. Trust in the Red Tractor!

owards the end of 2019 the Ledbury Swimming Club took a vote on whether to change the name from Ledbury and District Amateur Swimming Club to something that reflected that nearly half of the membership lives in and around the Malvern area - but that the home of the club is very much Ledbury.

The town’s Royal British Legion Club, who support serving and exserving armed force personnel and their families, is marking this significant milestone by celebrating a week of VE Day with events starting from Saturday 9th May. lot of people now like to take their pets on holiday with them (understandably – they are part of the family after all!) but there are a number of things to take into consideration before taking your pet to Europe.

Prior to travelling your dog/cat will require a Pet Passport – in order to get this they require a microchip and a rabies vaccine, they can then travel to Europe twenty-one days after their rabies vaccine. This may well change after the post-Brexit transition period but animals that currently have a pet passport can travel as normal until the end of this year.

Pets without a passport can be issue one as normal until this time.

There are a number of diseases that are endemic in Europe that we do not commonly see in the UK. You should bear this in mind when taking your pets abroad: Rabies: The UK is free from

Rabies but many parts of Europe are not. Rabies can obviously be spread to humans and this is why it is mandatory for dogs to be vaccinated against Rabies.

Leishmania: Leishmania is common in many parts of Europe.

It is spread by sandflies and is a single celled organism that lives in the hosts body. It can be challenging to diagnose Leishmania but sadly active untreated infections can be fatal.

It commonly causes skin lesions but can also affect the liver, kidneys and bone marrow. You can help to prevent your dogs being infected by using appropriate treatments that reduce the chance of your dog being bitten and keeping your animals inside at dawn and dusk as this is when the sandflies are most active.

There is a vaccine that can be given if you are travelling to severely affected areas.

Heartworm: This is transmitted by mosquitoes that are infected

with the heartworm larvae and can affect both cats and dogs.

Symptoms of heartworm include difficulty breathing, coughing and weight loss and can take months to years to manifest. This will always be a problem in very warm climates.

Tapeworm: Dogs must be treated with an appropriate tapeworm treatment 24-120 hours prior to returning to the UK. This is to prevent Echinococcus multilocularis from entering the UK. This is a very serious disease and humans can accidentally become infected from dog faeces.

Tick borne diseases: there are multiple diseases in Europe that are caused by tick bites, these include Babesia and Ehrlichia so it is essential to keep your dog up to date on routine tick prevention treatment whilst abroad and on return home.

eople often say there is no point commenting on planning applications as ‘they’ take no notice. In Ledbury we have two examples that our voices can get heard consider the Viaduct Site and the Gladman site off Dymock Road.

Gladman’s application for 420 homes off the Dymock Road was turned down at appeal in October 2019 because the proposal would be harmful to the character and appearance of the area and the site is not in an accessible location.

Ledbury Civic Society and the Town Council made representations at the Appeal. 602 representations from local people, public bodies and statutory consultees were received.

Bovis site off Leadon Way, 140 homes.

P192482/0. The target determination date is 27 February. 97 comments have been logged on the website. Objections include the Herefordshire Landscape Officer noting that the development does not relate well to the town and that mature trees of 30 years+ on Leadon Way will be lost in creating access to the site. Other comments cover the proposal for another new roundabout on the Leadon Way and worries that new residents will be cut off from the town by the busy Leadon Way.

Bloor Homes, the Viaduct site, 625 homes P171532/O. Herefordshire Council turned this application down chiefly because the proposed access was unsuitable (off the Bromyard Road). A large number of objections had expressed opposition to the proposed site access and a local referendum was held on the issue of site access, and won. Bloor Homes appeal against this decision will be heard on 28 April, 10.00 am at Ledbury Rugby Club. Members of the public are urged to attend, as this can signify the strength of public feeling.

The Full Pitcher/Old Cricket Pitch, 93 affordable homes. P194182/F. Target determination date 11 March. The developer is Connexus a local Housing Association. There will be a mix of tenures on site: some homes will be for rent at 80% of market rent; some ‘rent to buy’ (80% market rent with option to buy after 5 years); some ‘shared ownership’ (part buy, part rent). Most homes will be 2/3 bed with a few 1 beds and a couple of accessible bungalows. There are no 4 or 5 bed homes. 16 representations on the website to date.

Gladman’s application for 210 homes off the Little Marcle Road is no longer ‘live. Gladman did not respond to Herefordshire Council’s requests for further information within the statutory time. 197 representations were received on this application.

The more of us who comment the more the planners will take notice!

s we head into a new gardening season, we have a new contributor for our regular gardening pages: Mark Moir, owner of Newent Plant Centre @ The Nest Ledbury.

Mark trained at Pershore College, graduating with a diploma in Hardy Plant Production. After working on several nurseries learning about propagation, plant production, marketing and maintenance of plants, he moved to working in local garden centres.

Having sourced plants from all

over the world for several large garden centre groups, he finally realised his real passion was for “growing” plants. He set up Newent Plant Centre in 2009 which is now based at The Nest,

“I just love plants, growing plants and talking to customers about plants” explained Mark. “The Plant Centre is an exciting place every day of the year, it’s constantly changing and there are different plants for every season, so it’s different every time someone visits.”

Throughout the year Mark will be sharing his ideas for each month, and tips for your garden.

Although the Daffodils, Primroses, and Daphnes are in full bloom, it’s time to plan for some summer colour Sweet Peas are one of the easiest annual plants to grow – they flower from June to October – and most varieties have a wonderful scent. Now is the time to sow the seeds.

Pop about three seeds into a 9cm (3 inch) pot of fresh compost.

They should be about 1.5cm

deep (½ inch). Some gardeners like to soak the seeds overnight in water before sowing, but I’ve never found this necessary. Water them in lightly and place in a cold-frame, greenhouse or warm windowsill. At around 150C the seedlings usually appear in around two to three weeks.

Pinch out the growing tips when they reach about 5cms (2 inches) high; this will encourage them to bush out and produce more stems. Gradually accustom them to outdoor conditions from April onwards – avoid leaving them out overnight for the first week if there are any frosts expected.

Plant them out in a sunny spot about 30cm (12 inches) apart.

Taller varieties will need some support – you can use tall canes, sticks, trellis or netting. Sweet peas produce tendrils at the ends of the leaves so they happily scramble up netting, but they are more likely to need tying up if you use canes.

The big secret to success with Sweet Peas is to keep picking the flowers. They start to appear from June and will still be blooming in October. Pick flowers every few days – if you allow any seeds to set the plants will stop flowering.

The plants will benefit from

watering and feeding in the summer if we have any longer dry spells.

My favourite variety is “Charlies Angel”, the soft pale blue flowers are large and ruffled at the edges.

One of the best scented varieties, and for me this is an essential element for a Sweet Pea. If you don’t have a garden border for Sweet Peas there are dwarf varieties available that can be grown in pots or even hanging baskets.

Quick jobs to do this March _ Sow a few “mixed lettuce leaves” in a pot - they grow quickly and can be harvested in as little as three weeks _ Plant a patio pot with Spring Pansies, Aubretia and Tulips – try choosing just one flower colour so they all blend together

_ Sprinkle some slow release plant food around rose bushes; encouraging strong healthy growth in spring will give better and more flowers in summer _ Sit and enjoy your garden on a sunny day – watch the early bumble bees feeding on your flowers.

LEDBURY COMMUNITY DAY Saturday 6th June

he 8th Ledbury Community Day, the day when groups and organisations who serve Ledbury and District show what they do, will be held this year on Saturday 6th June.

The event will take place again in the Burgage and St Katherine’s Halls, the Community Centre and other venues in Ledbury.

Paul Kinnaird of the organising committee said, “Ledbury Community Day provides a great opportunity for groups and organisations to meet people, to tell about the services they offer, to seek volunteers and new members, and to show people how they can help their lives in all kinds of ways from learning and interests to well-being and support.

“For those attending it’s a great way to find out what goes on in Ledbury, what they can help or what can help them.” 80 groups took part in 2019.

Poets Path Potter Events held for 8th year from Dymock Cricket Club Choice of 5 events over four distances of 8 miles, 10 miles, 16 miles or a marathon of 26 miles for runners and walkers along scenic countryside paths

aking place from the event HQ of Dymock Cricket Club and to be held on Saturday 21st March 2020, the 8th annual ‘Poets Path Potter’ is primarily organised as a charity fund raising event for runners or walkers.

in the history of the lives and work of the poets and their relationship with the Dymock area. They also mark the changes that have occurred during the last century, like bridges over old railway lines, traces of old canals and historic buildings, such as ancient churches and old farm houses.

Entrants have a choice of three lovely Gloucestershire rural, scenic and mainly off-road paths with 5 different events of approximately 8 miles (2 events), 10 miles, 16 miles and 26 miles (a marathon). There should be spectacular displays of the now rare native Daffodils, for which the area is noted, to enjoy on many parts of the route.

Although participants are asked to enter in advance (online entry is available), entries on the day are also possible. Anyone turning up on the day should arrive in time to be ready to leave the HQ at 8.30am for an event briefing at the start at 8.45pm. There is a generous 10 hour time limit to complete any of the distances, allowing walkers to also comfortably tackle the full marathon distance.

Based in Dymock near Newent, Gloucestershire, all events will start on Wintour’s Green in front of Dymock Church at 9.00am.

They will be held over the locally famous paths of Poets Path I and Poets Path II (both of 8 miles) and the Daffodil Way (10 miles). The longer events do multiple loops.

All the proceeds after costs have been deducted will be equally split between Dymock Cricket Club (to contribute towards their new pavilion) and Friends of the Dymock Poets (for upkeep of the Poets Paths).

All entrants will be given maps, route descriptions and the course will be marked with tape. They are advised to treat the events as self-navigation and self-supporting with no marshals or water stations anywhere on the route. However, refreshments will be available at the end of each 8 or 10 mile loop since all pass through the HQ. Entrants should carry enough water and food to last their chosen event, wear tough trail-type shoes or boots to cope with the wet and muddy conditions to be expected in many places and wear/take spare clothing appropriate for possibly unsettled spring weather.

As usual, to mark its literary heritage there is expected to be a fun reading of running poetry before the start by the Ed & Phil ‘Resident Poet’ and fellow runner, Kathy Tytler. Her repertoire includes the very witty: ‘The hill that is better than sex’!

The Paths commemorate the fame of the area as being the home of six celebrated poets during the period leading up to the First World War. The famous author of ‘The Soldier’, Rupert Brooke, was one of those who spent some months in the area in 1913 and 1914. The different paths are steeped 42

Crime Prevention Advice PHONE SCAMS

CSO Alexander and PCSO Ashby have attended various groups in Ledbury over the last few months and given scam awareness talks.

The police take phone scams very seriously. Criminals will often use scam phone calls as a way of defrauding people out of their money.

On most occasions, people realise that the call is a scam, but we are encouraging people to continue be vigilant.

What to look out for Typically scammers will pretend to be from the police, and tell callers that their bank cards have been used fraudulently. Often the callers have stated that they are from the MET police, but they have been known to claim that they are from West Mercia Police, MI6 or the fraud squad. They will often say that they have the offenders in custody.

Usually they will then ask the victim to contact their bank to cancel their cards. In doing so, they will 'hold the line', so the victim believes that they are calling their bank, when in fact they are still on the line to the offenders.

They will then encourage the victims to hand over their bank details, including their PIN which they will often ask them to enter into the keypad of the phone.

Following this they will say that the cards are needed and send a courier to collect them.

Sometimes they will ask the victims to give a password which the courier will use to make it appear more genuine. Consequently the offenders have been able to withdraw money from victim's accounts.

On other occasions, rather than sending a courier, they have asked the victims to transfer money to a secure police account, asking them to call back to verify that they are genuine, whilst holding the line.

Sometimes the scammers have told the victims to attend the bank to transfer money but told them that bank employees are involved in the scam, so not to mention it to them.

What to do We offer the following advice to protect you from these scams: t Remember: police officers and banks will never ask for account details or PINs over the phone. t Police officers and banks would never come to your house to collect your cards or property. t They would also never ask you to transfer money to a secure account. t If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and call 101 using another phone. In an emergency or if a crime is in progress call 999. t If you have elderly friends or relatives who may be vulnerable to this scam, please talk to them and make them aware.

Garden & Shed Security As spring approaches, many people across West Mercia will be turning their attention to the garden, others will be taking out their bikes to enjoy the warmer weather, or preparing the BBQ. Many people store their gardening equipment, tools, bikes and BBQ s in their shed and, unfortunately, this means that these outbuildings are often seen as an easy target by thieves.

The basics of protecting your home and garden Thieves will generally take the easiest option when considering breaking into a shed, outbuilding or home, and security measures, such as a side gate and motionactivated lighting, can deter the would-be thief.

However, there are other ways to protect your home and garden.

Gravel paths and drives are a fantastic way of cheaply and unobtrusively discouraging a thief from entering your garden.

Gravel makes a loud noise when stepped on which carries well at night and may wake the home owners, neighbours or a dog. This is instantly off-putting to a thief.

Another way to protect your home is to plant prickly hedging around the perimeter of your garden.

How much are the contents of your shed worth?

We have had a number of items stolen from sheds across the rural areas recently.

When asked what is in their shed many people will answer something like 'Just a few old tools', 'A bit of fishing tackle', 'The kids toys', 'Nothing much, just junk'. Because people think that the contents of their shed have little value they pay little attention to shed security. But what if you had to replace the contents of your shed, just how much would it cost?

he yellow trumpets of daffodils brighten up the dullest spring day as they cluster together in gardens, on roadsides and in parks during March and April. But these are often the planted or escaped garden varieties. A real treat is spotting a wild daffodil among the dappled shade of an ancient woodland or pushing up through the grasses of a damp meadow. During early Spring, swathes of wild daffodils (Narcissus pseadonarcissus) spread their yellow blaze through meadows, woodland and field margins. They reach their greatest concentrations on the Herefordshire/ Gloucestershire border around Newent, Dymock and Ledbury; ‘the wild daffodil centre of England’. But the wild daffodil is also patchily distributed throughout Herefordshire. You can see them at our Lea & Paget’s Wood and Wessington Pasture Nature Reserves on the Woolhope Dome.

Originally a woodland plant, they have persisted on cleared and damp sites or spread from there into old improved grassland.

It can be seen in parts of south Devon, the Black Mountains in Wales, the Lake District in Cumbria, and along the GloucestershireHerefordshire border.

Nowhere is the wild daffodil, or Lent lily, more popular or better known than in the ‘Golden Triangle’ of Newent, Dymock and Ledbury on the Gloucestershire-Herefordshire border. In the 1930s, the Great Western railway ran ‘Daffodil Specials’ from London for tourists to walk amongst the golden throngs and buy bunches at farm gates. The ‘Daffodil Line’ to Dymock was closed in 1959, but the flowers are still celebrated at Daffodil Weekends in and around the Golden Triangle in March.

Honey, I forgot to feed the sourdough!

A

n almost white great tit, stark against rain dreary skies has been the only excitement in the garden lately and so I’ve turned my attention to other things. As luck would have it I was given a sourdough starter; little did I know what I was letting myself in for.

I’ve wanted to make my own bread for a long time; who can resist the satisfaction of cutting into your own loaf, and that smell when you open the oven door?

But you know what it’s like, somehow you never get round to it. Friends suggested I should get a bread maker… ‘Simples.’ My conscience stopped me, after all, there, standing in the kitchen was a black, fuel guzzling monster that repays continual stoking with effortless cooking … the Rayburn, the perfect bread making machine.

There is also that little thing called ‘life,’ doesn’t it just always get in the way of the things you REALLY want to do? Besides, my sourdough starter was a gift, I couldn’t allow it to die, unloved in its jar on the second shelf of my fridge.

A sourdough starter is alive. Flour and water are inhabited by natural wild yeasts causing it to ferment.

It’s been used for bread making since the ancient Egyptians and

has travelled with humankind on all our many adventures throughout history until the 19th century when brewers yeast came into use and sourdough declined in popularity. Sourdough even played a part in the California gold rush, and could be found firmly established in the prospectors’ camps on the Klondike.

happens every two days, feeding is daily, sourdough is a demanding life form and my life has become a never ending round of feeding birds, dogs, humans and the cat.

Fitting it all in isn’t easy and unlike a whippet, the starter doesn’t remind me it needs feeding, so there has been some neglect of the beast in the fridge.

My starter bubbles away in its jar like anaemic lava and like all living things, whether it's a goldfish or a whippet, it needs looking after. I take my jar from the fridge daily and leave it to reach room temperature before feeding the creature inside with flour and water. If I leave the starter out of the fridge too long, it rises, creeping over the rim of the jar like an alien from an early Star Trek episode…you know the ones, fibreglass rocks, shaky walls and green slime.

I was relating all this to a friend over coffee one morning when she asked, ‘What if you want to go on holiday?’

My first effort at making sourdough almost burnt out the motor of my little Kenwood forcing me to knead the dough by hand … as good as a fifteen minute workout. Baking 51

edbury Places is looking forward to welcoming local residents to the Heritage Centre ‘Drop-In’ in Church Lane Ledbury on Saturday 21st March between 10am and 2pm, and talk to volunteers who staff the museum seven days a week for seven months of the year.

Refreshments will be provided.

It goes without saying that the building can only be open throughout the season as a result of the efforts of our wonderful band of volunteers. There are over fifty at present but we have a few gaps to fill for the coming season. Support and training are provided and you don’t have to be an expert to play a valuable role at the Heritage Centre.

The Heritage Centre will be opening this year on Saturday 28th March.

Last year we had over 25,000 visitors from all parts of the globe. Visitors particularly enjoy the atmosphere of the building, the huge chimney, the construction of the building itself and the friendliness of the volunteers.

ne of the best parts of my job is when I find a treasure trove of exciting items which I can sit down and spend a good few hours sorting through and cataloguing. A recent phone call from an elderley client led me to an appointment down a dead end track and into a dark and muddy farmyard. With a forlorn look at my new black suede boots I squelched to and fro loading boxes of small collectables and antique textiles into my car.

The next day I was rewarded for my efforts by spending several delightful hours discovering a host of interesting items - including some fabulous antique costume jewellery, enamel buttons, buckles and a variety of other small collectables. I actually managed to catalogue over one hundred items from just a few boxes – much to

the surprise of my client who had imagined I might divide it up into just a few lots. Other interesting pieces included parasols, fans, shawls, various Victorian clothing and a small group of bronze and silver medallions.

Having listed and valued all these items it was a pleasure to see them all photographed and uploaded onto the internet where they immediately began to attract keen interest from collectors. White Chocolate Berry Cheesecake

METHOD 1. Break the chocolate into a glass bowl, then put it over a pan of just simmering water to melt, making sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Alternatively, melt in the microwave being careful not to overheat.

2.

Line a lightly oiled 900g loaf tin with cling film.

3. Whisk the cheese, cream and sugar together, preferably with electric beaters, then stir into the almost-cool melted white chocolate until well combined.

4.

Mix 50g raspberries with 2 tbsp of the jam.

MOTHER'S DAY TREAT ...

5. Spoon half the cheese mixture into the loaf tin, then spoon the jammy raspberries down the centre.

A stunning no-cook pudding bursting with summer flavours - perfect for a special Mother’s Day treat.

Serves 8 Prep: 25 mins plus 6 hours or overnight chilling

6. Top with the rest of the cheese mixture, level the top, then press in the biscuits.

t 2 x 150g bars white chocolate t 2 x 300g tubs Philadelphia Cream Cheese

8. Set aside about 6 strawberries. Halve the rest, and warm in a pan with the remaining jam until soft.

t 284ml pot double cream t 50g caster sugar t 170g punnet raspberries

9. Whizz in a food processor or with a hand blender, then rub through a sieve to remove the seeds and make a sauce. Add a drop of water if the sauce is too thick.

t 5 tbsp raspberry jam t 85g Amaretti biscuits t 200g small strawberries t a few blueberries (optional)

10, To serve: carefully turn the tin onto a plate, lift it away and strip off the cling film.

11. Halve the remaining strawberries, and arrange on top of the cheesecake with the remaining raspberries and blueberries (if using).

12. Pour over a little sauce and serve the rest separately for drizzling over.

arious types and styles of wines are widely available in these modern times. Red, white, rosé, sparkling, dry, medium, sweet, are just some of the choices to be considered when selecting wine. Organic wines suitable for vegetarians and vegans are further options available.

Chile produces splendid wines, and I found the Chilean Valle wines to be excellent. Valle De Casablanca Reserva Chardonnay is a white wine pleaser for many occasions. The climate of the Casablanca Valley has cooling breezes, creating perfect conditions for the growing of grapes. This Chardonnay flavour is fresh, with the mouthfeel and palate appreciating a good, balanced production. It pairs perfectly with salmon and other

Staying with Valle De Leyda, Reserva Pinot Noir is very popular with red wine lovers. Juicy red fruits on the nose lead enticingly to the mouth’s pleasures, for this smooth, powerful production. It accompanies tuna fish and red meat dishes, particularly well.

Vine & Bloom Merlot (Italy) vegan wine is described as ‘smooth and juicy’, again, an accurate description with which I agree.

Dark fruits, on the nose and mouthfeel, continue through to the palate’s sensation and enjoyment; a smooth and very popular red wine, to pair with numerous dishes. Other vegan wine productions are also available.

THE VAGUS NERVE The word vagus means wandering in Latin, this nerve is appropriately named as it wanders through the body with connections to many organs and body systems via the parasympathetic nervous system. It is the longest nerve in the human body originating from the brain stem at the back of the skull and weaving its way through the abdomen with branching nerves coming into contact with the heart, lungs, voicebox, stomach, and ears along with other body parts. Incoming information is distributed via the vagus nerve from the nervous system to the brain. The nerve also transmits outgoing information governing a wide range of reflex responses. Proper vagal function is critical to health and several modalities aim to stimulate the nerve to get proper function to the different body systems it regulates. There are also many techniques available that can be used to balance this vitally important nerve.

The nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system which is the branch of the nervous system where rest, digestion, repair and sleep occur.

This process begins in the brain with the vagus nerve and then this causes the secretion of gastric juices in preparation for the food to enter your body and begin the process of being digested.

W

hen I heard of a craft centre that made so many different things I immediately wanted to visit it. My husband Michael and I were with a group of friends on a trip to Torquay, just seeing the sights.

Cockington Court is a former stately home first recorded in the Doomsday Book and built upon over the centuries, reflecting a variety of architectural periods. Many years ago the Cary's and the Mallock's owned the estate, and as a youngster, crime novelist Agatha Christie was a regular visitor. She appeared in family theatricals staged on the front lawn. It now houses a craft centre, with over twenty craft studios, tea rooms, a Tudor rose garden, a contemporary art gallery and a popular children’s play area. It is also one of Torbay's favourite destinations, combining history to the present day.

We were intrigued to discover twenty different artists’ studios. A glass blower, who did wonderful things with glass, a blacksmith with some of the most ingenious designs I've ever seen, and a woodworker who made delightful children's toys and many other things. We also found a leather worker, who

made the most beautiful leather handbags, purses, bookmarks, and numerous other things. There was also an artist who worked in slate, and made the most unusual clocks, placemats and coasters.

The manor house has a large reception room that will hold around 55 guests. There is also The Hayloft, a two-storey wedding venue, perfect for intimate ceremonies.

The space is available for all occasions and you can even hire a horse and carriage for the day.

At the craft studios you can buy high quality crafts directly from the makers.

You can even stand and watch the glass blowers create wonderful works of art, hear the blacksmith clinking at his forge, and smell the delightful aromas of the delicious chocolate being made by the chocolatier.

The studios are open daily from 10am and admission is free. You can even book lessons and learn some of the crafts.

Cockington House has a delightful restaurant 67 where

you can enjoy a Devon cream tea and many other delicious treats.

The village is a great place for a stroll, and is one of the most densely thatched villages in England. It has a working forge, waterwheel, medieval church, water meadows, shops, cafes, and a Lutyens-designed pub. It really is a beautiful place for all the family to spend a day exploring.
