Following on from last month’s article about Dolly Bevan and the baby bonnets I've had requests from several people wanting copies of Dolly’s pattern, as well as details of where to send the bonnets. If anyone still wants these, please email me – details on the opposite page. By the time you read this, the clocks will have changed and we can once again look forward to the lovely long summer evenings. And just around the corner is Easter, so enjoy your hot-cross buns and Easter eggs, and until next time, keep happy and healthy.

Spring is here and so far the weather has been exceptionally good for this time of year, however at the time of writing it is pouring with rain, although the sun has just come out so we have the most beautiful rainbow overhead. As a child, growing up in Kenya, if it rained on a sunny day, we called that a “monkey’s wedding”! Was that just a weird colonial thing, or does anyone else remember the same? Or did you have some other name for it in your corner of the world?

Money Matters! I
t is estimated that every year £5.5 billion of state benefits intended for older people goes unclaimed. Could you be missing out? Retirement is something that many of us look forward to – more time to relax and do the things we enjoy, more time to spend with family and friends. But along with more free time may come a drop in income. Even if you have a reasonable income from pensions and other investments, it still makes sense to take advantage of any benefits or concessions you may be entitled to and increase your income. If you are 60 or over, you could be entitled to benefits that you haven’t been able to claim before. Ledbury Focus
This additional financial support can help you maintain your independence, improve your standard of living, help with housing costs, care needs or general day to day living expenses. Don’t assume you’re not eligible just because you have some savings or own your home. And even if you’re already claiming some benefits you may be entitled to others - it doesn’t hurt to check. Last year our Information & Advice Team gained more than £1 million in additional income for older people in Herefordshire. Our Information & Advice Service is free to people aged 50 and over, their families and carer’s. This is a completely confidential service which offers impartial and accurate information and advice. Our Information & Advice Team carry out free benefit checks, they will explain each benefit and
entitlement to you, work out what you might eligible to claim for and help you to complete forms. They can also help you resolve consumer issues, and provide impartial information and advice about residential and nursing home fees, paying for care at home, tax, pensions, housing and utilities. We offer drop in and appointment sessions at our offices and also arrange home visits for people who find it difficult to leave the house. If you have concerns about money or paying bills contact our Information & Advice Team before these become a long term worry. To find out more about our Information & Advice Service and how we could help you, please contact us: Telephone: 0333 0066 299 email: contact@ageukhl.org Registered Charity No: 1093512

Communities benefit from investment in
BODY WORN VIDEOS
P
olice and Crimes Commissioner John Campion made a ÂŁ1million investment in the technology, which was rolled out ahead of schedule in September 2017. In an average month, over 13,000 clips are recorded, of which more than 2000 are used in evidence.
The footage can now be shared digitally with the Crown Prosecution Service to use in court and charging decisions, saving time for both the police and the justice system. A Cambridge University Study showed the technology could reduce complaints by 93%, and here in West Mercia complaints are being dealt with quicker than before it was introduced, with BWV providing clear evidence in some cases that complaints are unfounded.

Officers have described how in some instances the mere presence of body cameras can diffuse a situation and impact on offender behaviour. It's also given colleagues a better understanding of people's demeanour in order to support decisions made and helped provide reassurance to victims. Further research is now underway, to measure the long term impact of the benefits in areas such as best use of evidence to increase convictions, the potential for early guilty pleas and victimless prosecutions, stop and search, use of force, the increase in public confidence, officer safety and assaults and cost savings.
Penalty points and fines for drivers using mobile phones Motorists caught using mobile phones at the wheel will receive six points on their licence and a ÂŁ200 fine. emergency. However, they are distracting if used when driving and this increases the risk of a collision. To drive safely you must concentrate on the road and a split-second lapse in concentration if talking on the phone could result in a collision.

T
he new Cricket season is fast approaching and at Eastnor Cricket Club we have been hard at work making preparations both on and off the field, with our team of volunteers getting the ground and facilities ready for the new season. On the playing front this season the 1st and 2nd teams will be competing in the Worcester Cricket league starting on Saturday 20th April. New players for all sides and the Sunday social matches are always welcome at the club, so anyone of any age and ability is always welcome at our very friendly club located in the beautiful village setting close to Eastnor Castle. The colts section are aiming for another busy season and our colts registration evening will be held on Wednesday April 10th from 6.30pm at the ground, with coaching to commence in the weeks following. This year the club will again be taking part in the ECB All Stars cricket initiative for young juniors.
Another busy season both on and off the field is planned and some highlights include visiting sides from New Zealand and Australia, and we will again be hosting Herefordshire County Cricket fixtures during the summer. News of these and other events will be published nearer the dates. For any further details on any of the above or on any aspect of the club where new members are always welcome please contact:

lthough the Bowling Green may have looked empty and quiet during the winter months a great deal has been happening elsewhere: preparing and revitalising the green, refurbishing the club kitchen and a variety of social activities - Bingo, Quiz Night, Fun Evening and interesting talks to entertain members out of season. But now that spring is on its way outdoor play can resume once more and Ledbury Bowling Club invites everyone to come up to Bank Crescent on Saturday 13th April from 10am onwards to visit the Green and Clubhouse during their Open Day. Whether you are looking to enjoy a gentle social game (Friday nights are social play evenings), a little friendly competition (matches are played against local and visiting teams) or wishing to engage at a more competitive level (some of the Ledbury bowlers play at national level and represented the county in 2018) there is room for you here.

Inspirational Talk Giving Hope to Children with Disabilities
C
arly Bauert, accompanied by her son Ollie, gave a thought provoking and uplifting talk to Ledbury Rotarians on her campaign to allow her disabled son permission to have a prosthetic blade leg. Carly’s son, Oliver, now 11 years old, was born with a rare birth disorder called Proximal Fenoral Focal Deficiency, meaning he has half a leg and grew up using a standard prosthetic limb.
It was while watching the Paralympics, that he saw for the first time those running with blades, and that year on his visit to see Father Christmas, he asked if he could have a blade. Carly heard this and realised there are many disabled children who want to participate in sports and other activities, and was tireless in her efforts to raise awareness and funding, eventually being invited to the House of Commons to make the case for NHS assistance for children with disabilities. Her persistence and perseverance paid off and in 2013, Oliver was one of the first children in the UK to be given a blade by the NHS. Listening to Ollie recount his experiences and aspirations with such confidence was inspirational, and his wish now is to visit Florida and swim with ‘Winter’, a bottlenose dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in the USA, widely known for having the first ever prosthetic tail. Winter is the subject of a book and film entitled Dolphin Tale! Rotary President Jan Long said that it had been a stimulating and impressive talk, and with Carly who works for the organisation called ‘Limbpower’, gives hope to many young people with disabilities, and encourages children to follow their dreams. article & photos by Jan Long Rotary Club of Ledbury

Early Blooms article & photos by Geraldine Woods-Humprey
T
wo photographs of the same tree: the first taken in April 2018, the second in February of this year. The photographs were not taken for their beauty, but to record the blooming of this once Victoria Plum. One night many years ago gales split the plum tree and it was presumed to be lost. As is the way of the natural world little is ever lost or wasted. Everything regenerates or is recycled, becoming once again part of the chain of life. So it was with the Victoria Plum. Another tree grew from the original graft. The result is a small tree always the first to bloom. The flowers resemble blackthorn, but there are no thorns. Fruit follows, the colour of a Vicky, but it never develops and is quite inedible; its only value: ornamental.
I have often thought about pulling the tree out, but for the fact that it blooms so early I would have done so, replacing it with something more productive; but this year that capacity to come early into flower has never been more important. February was unseasonably warm. Insects came out early, birds began to nest, hedgehogs awoke from hibernation. The natural world was out of sync. Not everything responded to the warmth in the same way, food supplies were patchy and judging by the amount of bird food consumed, still largely unavailable. My tree, the only one in Ledbury Focus
flower, was humming with bees a good two months ahead of last year. We all enjoyed the record breaking warmth, but if a cold snap follows such early warm weather, then some of our wild life may not survive. Hedgehogs will not have enough energy to go back into hibernation, the tortoiseshell butterfly I spotted on my winter flowering honeysuckle will perish along with many other insects. These extremes of weather, be they good or bad are a warning and one we must listen too. All is not well in our natural world. Our wildlife is in serious trouble. A pod of killer whales living off the coast of Scotland will die out. They haven’t bred for 25 years because of, scientists believe, the toxic cocktail of chemicals in the sea. Fifty-six percent of UK wildlife is now endangered. Insects are in dramatic and worrying decline. Insects can live without us: we can’t live without them. Its spring, all around me new life is beginning. I watch the blue tits nesting, and the frogs spawning. These and every other creature, except us, is playing its part in keeping our planet habitable. They do so in ignorance of how much humans are destroying. Isn’t it time we took up our responsibilities to our planet? A good place to start: reduce our waste.

WORTHY WINES: AUSTRIA
T
he Sattlerhof winery, hotel and restaurant, is located at Sudsteiermark and has grand vineyards producing an excellent range of impressive wines: classic Styrian wines, using selective, fully-ripened grapes include superb Sauvignon Blanc productions; very popular village wines have splendid Muskateller, a grape that is typical of the region; singlevineyard productions are regularly chosen by many connoisseurs and wine lovers, and aged Pfarrweingarten wines are only produced during the very best years. Gamlitz Sauvignon Blanc and Gamlitz Muskateller have wide appeal. Grapes from their Gamlitz vineyards are utilised for these popular productions. Very pleasant fruit bouquets greet the nasal senses, and a most acceptable mouthfeel and palate follows, for each. Ried Sernauberg Sauvignon Blanc has grapes grown from the single-vineyard site, Sernauberg. The bouquet leads to a sensuous
Ledbury Focus
mouthfeel and the palate’s appreciation. This elegant wine is very good for ageing, as are a number of other productions from Sattlerhof, including Ried Kranachberg Sauvignon Blanc, which is impressively alluring. Also, very much appreciated are the Ried Pfarrweingarten wines, with their outstanding bouquets, full mouthfeels and palate sensations - great wines for ageing, too. These wines are a wonderful accompaniment to fish, seafood and a lot of cuisine, as well as being ideal to enjoy on their own. For a sweet wine may I suggest Trockenbeerenauslese Sauvignon Blanc. Again, grapes harvested selectively, by hand, plus the process for this wine, produces a delight to savour. Elegant, delicious and a perfect pairing with numerous desserts. A wealth of information about their full range can be found at www.sattlerhof.at Fink und Kotzian OG, in the Weinviertel, respects the traditions during the making of wines, as do many wine producers, whilst
venturing further, to enhance appearances, aromas and flavours. Gruner Veltliner productions are always very popular and Ried Hintern Dorf, plus Ried Konigsberg are regularly choseny. Riesling Ried Hintern Dorf Berg und Meer+ and ZT Sauvignon Blanc are further examples of impressive productions from this company. Again, both have a good bouquet of tropical fruits and a structured mouthfeel. The palate’s sensation also extends the pleasures of these wines. Great accompaniments to fish, seafood and white meats, etc. For all details of their full range, www.weinfink.at As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

Destination of the Month: CAPE TOWN – South Africa
s I write, I am lucky enough to be preparing A and packing for a trip to Cape Town. Having sent many customers here, it is at the very top of
my list of places to go and now I am finally realising a long-standing dream and going myself! Why Cape Town? You only need to look at the pictures to see why Cape Town is a very popular city to visit. It has so many features that make a holiday special. A cosmopolitan city centre with lots of independent high-quality restaurants and bars, history and culture to explore, beautiful beaches and a magnificent waterfront development. Add in the craft and food markets and the opportunities for adventure, the result is a city for everyone. Across South Africa and indeed Cape Town, it is very reasonable to eat out and supermarket prices are very low compared to the UK and the continent, making it excellent value. The exchange rate, which is just over 18 South African Rand (ZAR) to the pound is great too. Local beer is less than £2 a pint. When to visit? Tempretures peak between December and February, so expect the beaches to be busy. Better value is January to April when you can expect to find less wind and the beaches to be less crowded. October and Novemeber are also great months where you can expect nine to ten hours of sunshine. Getting there. Direct flights are available at around £500pp if you book early and can be a little flexible on dates. Flight time is approximately twelve hours and the time difference is onehour (last Sunday in March till Last Sunday in October) and two hours at all other times. Although the flight time is long, because there is very little time difference, there is no jetlag to contend with. You can also take a night flight both ways to maximise the time you spend on holiday free nights in the air. Car hire is readily available and at a reasonable cost.
38
What to see. Table Mountain With a rotating cable car that takes you to the summit, views are spectacular. Special rates for sunset rides, and free transport to and from the mountain. From here you will be able to admire the majestic city. You can have a snack in the mountain top café, or join a guided walk lasting 15, 30 or 45 minutes. Tickets cost around £18. Camps Bay Just ten minutes from Cape Town centre, with amazing beaches, hiking trails, beachfront restaurants serving seafood and local wines. A great spot for sunsets. Check out Bilboa, The Codfather, La Prada and 12 Apostles. V & A Waterfront Where the city meets the sea! This development is set in the oldest working harbour in the Southern hemisphere, with the spectacular back drop of Table Mountain. Take a GPS audio tour for FREE and explore shipping containers and unfinished highways, find out about the history and culture of the area, and hear some characters who have shaped its evolution. For those who like to shop there are over 450 stores to choose from. Boulders Beach and Penguin Colony Home to the vulnerable African Penguin, wooden walk ways allow visitors to view the penguins in their natural habitat. Entry fee is around £2 per adult which gains access o the beach, walkways and viewing points. You can also take time to chill on the beach or visit Simon’s Town. Kirstenbosch Gardens Acclaimed to be one of great botanic gardens of the world, this grandeur garden is set against the Eastern slopes of Table Mountain. And lies 13km outside the city. Entry is £4 and is easily accessible using the MyCiTi buses. You can download maps to help you explore the 528 hectares, of which 36 are cultivated. A nature lovers paradise of pristine fynbos and forest and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Robben Island Take a Robben Island Museum tour, which includes the ferry ride to Robben Island and a tour of this famous maximum-security prison takes around 3.5 hours at a cost of about £20. Departing from the V&A Waterfront. Tours include the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukwe’s house, the prison itself and of course Nelson Mandela’s cell. The Garden Route If you have more time, why not explore the Garden Route all the way to Port Elizabeth, take in the Winelands, enjoying a few nights in a ‘hideaway’ property on the edge of a lake or a lagoon. Visit many miles of unspoilt white beaches. Add a safari, an absolute highlight of your trip. The possibilities are endless. W
e have started our year with two fantastic presentations at our Monthly General Meetings, which are held on the third Thursday of each month. In January we had the lovely Jan Long, our local Historian and photographer from Bromsberrow Heath, who showed us photographs and told us all about her Mission to India, where she helped with a vaccination programme for children. We were totally enthralled with both her tales and her photographs. February brought us the wonderful ‘Fool’s Gold’ Steve & Carol from County Durham, who entertained us with pictures and videos which illustrated the stories behind their acoustic music and songs. Some of the songs were well known and allowed our members to sing along, particularly with the chorus, others were ones they had composed themselves. A thoroughly pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by all. So much so, that they have agreed to return on 15th October 2020. In March we look forward to the return of Graham Short the Royal Engraver and Micro Artist, who, famously, engraved a micro portrait of Jane Austen on four new style £5 notes back in 2016. Graham has taken on several interesting commissions since we saw him over two years ago, and has many more stories to tell – not to be missed. Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
Winter Damage
I
t is really good horticultural practice to inspect your plants, shrubs and trees frequently, especially after the winter, when storm and snow damage may be present. You need to see if you can find any dead, damaged or diseased material in the heart of the plants; material that has died over the winter. Luckily we have not had the volume of snow we have had in previous years. So a lot of damage through wind and snow hasn’t happened, however it is still worth going around all your shrubs and plants and taking out any dead, diseased and damaged material you find. In the horticultural trade we call these the three D’s. This is something that is essential to rose pruning, but is also applicable to all your other shrubs, and even your trees. If you are not sure if it is dead, scrape away a small part of the bark with your secateurs and a thin green layer of plant membrane should be revealed. This is the cambium layer - the living part of the plant - if it is there then your plant is alive. On some shrubs like Mahonia and Berberis this will be bright yellow, due to the presence of the chemical berberine. With experience, you will get a feel for what is dead and what is living tissue. Dead tissue is often brittle and may break off in your hand even with gentle pressure. If you are
42
unsure leave it until later in the spring. If the plant sn’t budded out by late May then it is unlikely to be alive. There are only a few things that are dormant beyond that point. Catalpa trees are one of them; they seem to appear dead way beyond when all the other trees are green, however they are very much alive, just waiting for warm, mild weather to arrive, as they come from more sub-tropical climes. Anything that has collapsed, will need cutting back to an appropriate bud. I have been to see a number of our customers with privet hedges (Lonicera nitida) that have collapsed with the recently high, strong winds. With collapsed hedges, the best way is to cut them back and let them re-established. It is tempting to tie them in, but once the cells in the stems have been elongated or snapped then there is little hope of the hedge regaining its shape by these methods. It is better to cut them down or trim the damaged sections back to suitable growing points. When pruning it is good practice to ensure that the hedge does not become top heavy. When shearing a hedge I still hand prune sections to ensure it doesn’t become too dense at the top. I make sure the hedge has a slight ‘A-Frame’ shape so that any snow is shed from the top and the low part of the hedge receives light. If you have suffered a lot of wind and snow damage in the past you may want to consider giving the hedge a slightly angled top so that the snow is easily shed.

Anything in the garden can suffer damage. For example, flowers that have come into bud early and have been hit by frost damage; any buds that are starting to rot on the stems needs to come off. Roses and Camellias are prone to this sort of damage and the flower can have lots of moisture in them, which can cause it to rot - this can then spread further down the plant or to other buds. So picking those off by hand is good husbandry. Larger elements of the garden such as apple trees can suffer from wind damage. It is good to get out and inspect your larger trees and shrubs after storms as the roots may have been moved or uprooted. If they have, then this is the time of year to get them supported before they start growing fresh roots in the spring. You want to get any plants that are leaning to become upright, so some supports might be useful. Hopefully, by doing this you are
Ledbury Focus
supporting the tree and giving it a longer life. The support will stop it rocking in the wind and allow it to put down new roots. For anyone interested in Foliation looking at any aspects of your garden from hard to soft landscaping, small to big projects please contact me on the numbers below

A brief anatomy of the neck musculoskeletal structure The skeleton of the neck is made up of 7 cervical vertebrae 1c – 7c. I will also mention the TMJ or temporomandibular joint as it has great importance in maintaining the correct balance of the neck. Problems can occur along the vertebral column in different ways such as disk problems or degeneration. Trauma due to injury is a common problem often found in the neck and this can sometimes give rise to symptoms years after the initial trauma occurred. Some of the muscles of the neck include the trapezius, upper trapezius, semispinalis capitis, erector spinae, scalenes, and the sternocleidomastoid or SCM for short! The Bowen Technique I have found that Bowen is extremely effective for treating neck problems, whether these are new or old injuries resulting from trauma or other problems. There are several reasons why I feel this therapy has such a great impact upon neck problems, as follows:
Less is more Bowen involves very gentle touch which often elicits significant benefit in the body. Many studies have confirmed that this light touch has a significant impact and often making a treatment more effective. The Bowen moves are often made over muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, joints and occasionally nerves. Treatment aims to stimulate the nervous system and body to begin a process of healing, repair and rejuvenation. Treatment works on many levels The Bowen moves – are made at key structural points on the body which the brain uses as natural reference points to determine the body’s posture. As a result, the moves can have a huge effect on the way the body holds itself. The Bowen moves on the neck are made over the scalenes, semispinalis capitis, upper trapezius and erector spinae muscles and over the occipital protuberance. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) – this joint is very

important in maintaining the correct posture of the neck. Imbalance here can cause a multitude of issues from ear problems to headaches and migraines to sinus issues and allergies. The nervous system – sensory information is induced by the Bowen move which reaches the spinal cord passing through the nerve pathways to the different centres of the brain. At this point the information is shunted back and forth via a complex self-corrective feedback mechanism. The information is then sent back down the spinal cord to the individual muscles for correction to take place. The basic Bowen neck moves will often have a profound impact on the balance of the overall body and will elicit a powerful sense of well-being. Fascia and its importance Fascia is connective tissue that covers all of the structures of the body and allows flexibility and free flowing movement throughout the whole body. The body maintains structure through its relationship with key structural bands of muscle via fascia. One key function of fascia bands is to maintain upright structure. If there is tension or weakness in the fascia a range of reactions can result such as pressure on nerves, tension in the musculature on one side and compensation patterns being set up in the rest of the body. In Bowen, we directly affect fascia by changing the way in which the muscles and fascia relate to each other and a change in structure becomes inevitable whereby the structure of the body will adopt a better position and the body will be better able to function. To highlight how important and how effective treating fascia is I give an example that the fascial system contains ten times more receptors than muscles, these receptors send messages directly to the brain. A significant result achieved for one of my clients Neck problems, even those that are long standing, seem to respond really well to Bowen. I worked
Ledbury Focus
with one client who was unable to move her head or neck, any movement caused significant pain. She was dropped off at my clinic by her friend who had had to drive very carefully as any jarring caused more pain. Within an hour after the first treatment the pain subsided considerably and the movement in the neck increased. After the second treatment the neck was virtually pain free and the range of movement pretty much back to normal. After the third and final treatment my client was back to being completely pain free with full range of movement returned. In practice I may also recommend supplements or remedies that will enhance the treatment we have conducted. I also often give exercises for clients to do themselves in between sessions that will enhance the effects of the treatment. Wellness Workshop I am holding a half day workshop on the 25 May 10am – 2pm in Corse, Gloucestershire. In the workshop, I will show you several techniques that can be used on a daily basis to enhance general health and wellbeing. Specifically, we will learn how to: • Calm the stress response, • Balance the meridians, • Balance blood chemistry, • Reduce fatigue, • Boost the immune system, • Feel strong and healthy and much more! he shining star of spring emerges, the bluebell, carpeting woodland floors with its delicate blue bell-shaped flowers. These thrive where light can reach them through open spaces in the canopy above. Take a walk in the woods above Ledbury to spot them, visit the Malvern Hills or head to Lea and Paget’s Wood nature reserve near Fownhope. Late April also sees a fabulous display in Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum. Herefordshire Wildlife Trust manages their woodland nature reserves by keeping rides wide open, coppicing areas and thinning others, allowing wild flowers such as bluebells to flourish, in turn providing a food source for bees, butterflies and other invertebrates.

The vibrant purple checkerboard, distinct flowers of snakes-head fritillary can be seen scattered over the grassland at Lugg Meadow this month (water-levels allowing!) This special flower thrives on floodplain meadows and is increasingly scarce across the UK. Meadows also begin to be decorated by butterflies now. The flutter of orange specks will be the male orange tip butterfly but look out for others including the small tortoiseshell and brimstone butterflies, as they emerge in the warmer weather. you identify? Brimstone are often considered to be spring butterflies but they can often be seen in most months of the year. The pale-yellow species will lay eggs on buckthorn which will hatch later in the summer so do keep an eye out butterfly eggs when trimming hedgerows and trees. Spot the swift swallows and the hasty house martins as they return from their migratory voyage ready to find a mate. Breeding season is upon us so watch out for busy birds building nests: collecting moss, sticks, and feathers. Watch out for early fledglings too. Many birds leave the nest before they are able to properly fly. Their parents will continue to feed them so if they are uninjured and not in immediate danger it is best to leave them where they are. Want to try something new this month? Foraging can be popular this time of year with strong smelling wild garlic (mix with common sorrel for a great pesto), slightly bitter dandelion leaves and hairy bittercress (eat raw in a salad) all good for picking now. Collect the tender tops of nettles and boil them into a soup or turn them in to tea. However, remember the forager’s code, only pick a small amount of a common plant where they are abundant and only if you are certain you have identified them correctly. article by Tertia Mason Ledbury Focus

A Convenient Herb Garden A
fter moving house, leaving behind a large garden, I now have a tiny garden, and I realise that I can’t grow quite such a variety of plants and herbs as I did before. I am now trying some pots of herbs on my kitchen windowsill. You can grow almost any herb in a container and most are very easy. Some herbs shouldn't be mixed as they have different water requirements, while others are more finicky and should be grown alone, so be sure to put plants that require similar care in the same pot. You can grow as many types of herbs in one container as you want, as long as you make sure that all the herbs in a single pot share the same sun, water, and soil preferences. For example, rosemary likes it hot and dry, while parsley needs steady moisture. They wouldn’t be perfect in the same pot. Ideally then, for best results, give each herb its own pot so that you can customize care and give it room to grow. Start by placing some broken pieces of pot over the drainage holes to prevent the compost from Ledbury Focus
washing out. For free-draining compost, mix multipurpose or soil-based compost with a few generous handfuls of grit, adding and mixing together in stages as you fill the container. Light is the most important aspect of growing indoor herbs so a sunny windowsill is an added advantage. Aggressive spreaders, such as mint and lemon balm, will need separate containers to keep them under control. In the past I have always planted my mint in a bucket with holes for drainage and place it in a handy spot where I can pick readily and control it's spread, but now it's in a pot, until that is, it grows too large, and then I will just have to find room outside. There are many benefits to growing herbs in containers. For me, it’s all about access. I love having fresh herbs growing in pots on my kitchen windowsill. That way, when I’m in the middle of making
dinner and realize I’ve forgotten to harvest a handful of mint or rosemary, they are right there, nearby. Rosemary has aromatic, needle-like foliage that adds a welcome depth of flavour to roasted potatoes and chicken dishes. Pot-grown herbs can really transform your cooking; they’re very low maintenance and contribute bags of flavour to every meal. Above all, remember to pick and enjoy your herbs regularly. The plants actually benefit from regular picking and will produce lots more shoots in response - a win-win situation! Having herbs on hand is just brilliant – and they look fantastic too! article & photos by Pamela 65 Green

Ledbury Scouts Celebrate 100 Years
1
st Ledbury Scouts celebrates its centenary in 2019. To mark the centenary, Ledbury is hosting the annual District St George’s Day parade and service on 28th April at St Michael’s. The Sunday afternoon event will see around 400 young people descend on the town and parade to the church where a brief service of thanksgiving will take place. For the parade through town, the sound of Ledbury Community Brass Band will fill the air, and afterwards a peal from the Ledbury Bellringers will sound out. The event will also be special in that the Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire, Lady Darnley, will take the salute in the town centre. The Queen is the patron of the Scout Movement and so it is very apt to have the Queen’s representative in the county there to take the salute. The event is being organised by a small sub-committee of leaders
from 1st Ledbury Scouts, and the townsfolk are encouraged to line the high street to see the spectacle. The parade will being at around 1.30pm on Sunday 28th April. In the spring, the Scouts and Explorers will again be supporting the Hellens Garden Festival – providing car park marshalling, a plant crèche and general stewarding. As this event has grown in popularity over the past few years the scouts expect to be working hard over that weekend. Say hello to them if you see them. The Scouts will be represented at the upcoming Ledbury Community Day where those interested in joining can ask questions and register interest. Later in the year all sections – Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers will be taking part in the first large scale camp for many decades at the Three Counties Showground. Around 4,000 young
people from across Herefordshire and Worcestershire will be taking part in the camp, called ‘ShireJam’. Towards the end of the year the scouts will be taking part in a pre-Christmas bag-pack event at Tesco in Ledbury, as they have in previous years. The 2018 bag pack raised enough money for the scouts to be able to purchase new patrol tents to replace old, heavy and worn out tents. Finally, thank you for your support of scouting in Ledbury in the past. Scouting is a unique movement and we are lucky to have engaged volunteer leaders to design and deliver the programme of events and weekly gatherings we have. Over the years many of you will have been involved in scouting in some way and we hope that it has made a positive impact on your life. Edd Hogan Assistant Group Scout Leader 1st Ledbury Scouts

Health & Wellbeing of Rabbits this Easter
I
t is easy to think about fluffy rabbits around Easter time. However rabbits aren't the easiest pets to look after Requiring specially adapted housing, room to exercise and an appropriate diet. Rabbits are selective feeders, meaning they will eat the nice bit and leave bits essential to their health.
• Locust pods and beans
We recommend rabbit to be fed on 80% hay, with 20% pellets and fresh fruit, wild flower and vegetables. Foods that should be avoided include:
• Chives
• Apple pips
• Ivy
• Avocado
• Poppy
• Potato
• Privet
• Rhubarb
• Primrose
• Tomato leaves
• Ragwort
• Bulbs • Bluebells • Yew • Foxgloves • Garlic • Onion • Shallots • Hemlock • Buttercups • Dock
We advise you consider neutering your rabbits to avoid unwanted litters and reduce the risk of cancer. Un-neutered males can become aggressive, whereas neutered rabbits can live happily with male and female rabbits. They are susceptible to a number of conditions, some of which can be fatal. We advise that you do twice daily check of you rabbits and enclosure for any thing that could cause harm. Rabbits are at risk of developing dental disease and misalignment of the cheek teeth especially if they eat a diet with insufficient fibre. These issues can be rectified if they are addressed and treated in the early stages.

Gut stasis is when the digestive system of a rabbit slows down or stops. This can result in a build-up of gas and toxins that can be lethal.

Obesity is common, therefore it is important that rabbits are able to exercise by providing them with space to express natural behaviours and play. Rabbits can be very playful pets, so providing them with toys can entertain and prevent obesity. We see a number of cases of flystrike during the warmer months, that doesn't mean that rabbits can't get flystrike at anytime, (we sadly saw a case Christmas eve this year). This is were flies have been attracted to dirty housing or messy bottoms then lay eggs, which hatch out into maggots. Rabbits require annual vaccines just like our dogs, cats and horses to protect them against fatal diseases. For many years, the diseases we have been concerned about are Myxomatosis and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD) these can be prevented a single annual vaccine, that is readily available that protects against both diseases. In more recent years, another strain of RHD has become increasing prevalent and this strain is not covered by the normal vaccine, has been seen to be fatal (We have sadly seen around 10 cases since last summer) . However there is an extra vaccine available to prevent against this. If you would like to speak with a member of our veterinary team regarding your rabbit health or their vaccination status, please do not hesitate to contact us.
