Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Ledbury Focus. As you can see, this edition is a joint one covering May and June – this is because of the current crisis situation, so please keep your copy until the end of June. As you will also be aware, we are not delivering the magazines to your homes because some members of the public were concerned about this. As the postal service is still ongoing, and postmen and delivery drivers are still delivering, we decided to get clarification from Ledbury Police as to whether or not we could deliver door-to-door. However, despite numerous requests for clarification, Ledbury Police chose to ignore all our emails and have never replied to us. This is particularly disappointing as the police in a number of other areas have given the go ahead because they consider these magazines to be a useful local resource.

Please be aware that you cannot pick up the Ledbury Focus at Aldi as they don’t allow us to leave the magazines there for the customers.

So, as we don’t want to risk having our distributors challenged and possibly fined for doing their jobs, we decided to deliver the magazines to local supermarkets, banks, butchers, newsagents and any other shops that are still open - where people can collect them. The following is a list of places where the Ledbury Focus can be collected, so perhaps you could let your family and friends know where they can also get a copy:

And now that you have picked up your copy of this month’s Ledbury Focus, I hope you will enjoy all the articles we’ve compiled to help while away the time – that is when you are not out in your garden enjoying the lovely late spring and early summer weather we are having. And this month we have a special section just for our younger readers when they want to escape from home schooling for an hour or so!

Although this is a very difficult time that we are all going through, it’s at times like this that we see the true nature of people, wonderful people like Captain Tom Moore and others like him who are raising millions to support the NHS and the fantastic work 8

difficult though this may be, hang in there, be strong and we will beat this thing. This country has been through pandemic crises before, many, many times, and has always survived – we can survive this one by staying home and being careful.

they are doing. And the way thousands of people every Thursday evening stand outside their homes applauding the NHS - even here in our tiny hamlet of Birtsmorton, everyone is out clapping and hooting car horns. It is truly moving, and the NHS deserves all the support they get.

One last thing for those of you who are having to cope with children at home, particularly if you have just one child. Instead of letting them spend time playing computer games, why not set up a Skype, Messenger or WhatsApp link with a friend and get them playing boards games across the internet. All you need is for both children (at either side of the internet link) to have the same board game Monopoly, Cluedo. or even chess (for the more advanced) - and the game is on. It’s not quite as good as being in the same room, but it’s better than playing a computer game on your own!

At the same time, let’s not overlook the many thousands of people who have lost their jobs and now have no alternative but to depend on food banks to survive. If you are one of the lucky ones who still has money coming in, please donate generously to the food bank trolleys at the supermarket, or you can contact Ledbury Food Bank on 07581 283092 or go online to www.ledburyfood bank.org to make a cash donation. The elderly are also in need of help at this time, so please contact Age UK if you can help in anyway, either with shopping or donations.

The next issue of the Ledbury Focus will be out in July – hopefully by then things will be starting to get back to normal.

At the time of writing, the lockdown has been extended for another three weeks so by the time you read this, there should only be another week to go. Realistically, it’s possible it may be extended again, but the good news is that the lockdown is having the right effect on the virus, and although hundreds of people are still sadly dying, the numbers are reducing. So please everybody,

Until then, wear your masks and gloves when you go out, and stay happy and healthy.

Herefordshire Carers’ Support (HCS), cedes legacy to Worcester Association of Carers (WAC) and HVOSS

H

erefordshire Carers came together at Saxon Hall, Hereford, on March 5th, to celebrate the end of an era. HCS has supported carers and carer groups across the county since 1995, profiling their needs with employers and GP’s, offering support to access training, leisure activities, local facilities, social care, advocacy, etc. Since the withdrawal of funding from Hereford Council (2019), HCS continued to support Carer groups and to develop an exit strategy (March 31st 2020), which included

a transfer of its residual funding, aimed at sustaining its legacy, for the benefit of carers in Herefordshire. Monies were passed to HVOSS to maintain and develop support for Young Carers and Young Adult Carers, including the management of the residue of a Children In Need Award. Two former HCS workers, who had been very involved in this arena, will continue their support through HVOSS. The remainder of the HCS funds, carefully managed by their treasurer, were presented to WAC, who tendered for the award of £60,000.00. They will continue to support Herefordshire Carer groups and to help plan carers’ activities, facilitating respite. This support will be spearheaded by two former HCS workers, who will now be integrated into WAC, and known as Hereford Carers. There is sufficient funding for two years plus, and it is to be hoped that extra funds will become available, in due course. The celebrations saw a coming together of carers from all corners of Herefordshire, paying tribute to the HCS legacy, and raising a glass to the future. HCS 10was represented

by the trustees and employees (past and present). Tribute was paid to Baroness Jill Pitkeathly, Patron, who was sadly unable to attend. Her presence was needed in “The House”. It was good to see County Councillor Diane Tonybee showing an interest in the group. Sheila March the outgoing Chair of HCS trustees presented the cheque to Carole Cumino, CEO of WAC With the ongoing COVID 19 crisis tribute must be paid to those unpaid carers, caring for loved ones, who in this period of lockdown, have little opportunity for accessing external support – all Day Opportunities are closed, and many are self isolated, with little respite. In addition thanks must also go to those paid carers, supporting people in Residential Care homes and Supported Living settings. They are all a part of the growing band of “unsung heroes” photos: top - cheque from HCS for WAC supporting Herefordshire Carer groups and carers’ activities left - Herefordshire County Councillor Diane Tonybee (Green Party), speaking to Kevin Isley, HCS Trustee

The pressure on our services is increasing daily. We have been inundated with calls from older, vulnerable and isolated people needing help. It’s a frightening time for elderly people, many of whom are finding that their normal support networks are breaking down. People are calling us because they are worried that they don’t have enough to eat and are without basic supplies.

If you or anyone you know is in need of help please do not hesitate to contact us. We have set up an emergency fundraising appeal and all monies raised will go to support those in need and help to keep our vital services operating. Eastnor Pottery’s founders get creative with clay Photo by Sarah Monk

W

ith all the fantastic pottery courses and classes that have taken place at Eastnor Pottery & The Flying Potter, one might be forgiven for thinking the sole business activity is providing creative experiences. Far from it! Artist founders Jon Williams and Sarah Monk took on the redundant premises on the Eastnor Castle Estate, primarily as a workshop for designing and making their original contemporary ceramics. The social engagement work came much later as the pair developed their ideas and business acumen. In fact, having recently closed their doors due to the COVID-19 crisis, the absence of customers and rural hush fondly reminds the couple of the time they set up studio in Eastnor 26 years ago! The unscheduled break from normal business activity has also provided Jon and Sarah with a

golden opportunity to further develop their ceramic work. Sarah makes unusual but useful objects based upon her life-long passion for domestic ceramics. Items given the Sarah Monk treatment have included toast racks, lemon squeezers, cutlery drainers and even the odd wig-stand! Inspiration, in part comes from childhood memories of Sarah’s family home in Surrey. Dad was an antiques collector and filled the house, floor to ceiling with pots and ceramic curios. Glass fronted display cabinets bursting with china rattled and chinked when you passed. Sarah’s current obsession is with soap dishes and bathroom accessories. Having ditched the use of plastic hand soap dispensers at home and in the studio, she has designed a range of ‘soap pillows’ and bowls to contain her shampoo and

conditioner bars. The full range of her creative products is on show at the Pottery, and also on sale on her website: www.sarahmonkceramics.co.uk Jon’s sculptural ceramics are designed to be interacted with in a fun and unusual way. In 2011 he created a solo touring exhibition of accessible pieces designed to excite the five senses. Pots could be shaken, struck, sniffed and tasted! One of the exhibits, a giant sand pit filled with buried ‘rattle’ pots provided a surprise not only for participants, but for Jon too. The sand was there to soften the impact of dropped pieces. However, participants discovered that by pushing and rolling the ‘rattle’ pots into the sand, you could create amazing textures and patterns. Although Jon hadn’t considered this as an outcome, it was something he very much welcomed; he loves the notion of creative discovery through play. Jon is currently exhibiting a range of water play pots in an exhibition called ‘Making Histories’ at Leamington Spa Art Gallery. Although the Gallery is temporarily closed, a video tour of the exhibition can be seen on the Gallery’s YouTube channel.

Creating Your Garden Paradise ĂƌƟ ĐůĞ ďLJ :ŽŶĂƚŚĂŶ ŝƐŚŽƉ

ROCKERIES L

ike all areas of the garden, by creating different environments for plants to grow means you can extend the range of varieties needed.

Rockery Options There are two options for building a rockery: either build it into an existing slope, or create/construct a mound with the rocks built into it. Either option is suitable, but the selected plants would change.

Rock gardens offer the chance to grow alpines in your garden, that would normally grow on the side of hills. These areas of changing interest are coming back into fashion with the wide range of plants available in garden centres nowadays.

If you are building into an existing bank, the bank might already be wet. If you are creating a mound then this area would tend to be drier. Therefore choosing the correct plants would be essential to fit into those areas.

In the local area of Ledbury, all the way down to Monmouth and in the other direction towards Malvern and parts of Worcester, it is quite commonplace for these ranges of hilly ground to spread into people’s gardens.

Choosing your Rocks The best thing to do is to choose a random selection of rocks. If they are all the same size then this looks rather unnatural. If they can be layered to resemble a natural rock face, this would create the desired result.

A straightforward rock garden is one without water; obviously water is another thing that can be added in to create movement through a rock garden, but can be quite complex to build into the rockery. Therefore we are just looking at rockeries themselves.

Placing the rocks in a crescent shape, starting at the bottom and digging into the bank, will create pockets for planting. Choosing your Plants Choosing your plants is obviously very critical because you want plants that will flow over the edge and slowly cover some of the rocks to make it look natural. Something to bear in mind when placing your plants is that you might want to use some of the stones as stepping stones through your planting in order to maintain and weed the area.

Stones The type of stone used is particularly important. Ideally, when picking rocks, a granite stone and not a porous stone would be preferable. This will prevent them shattering during the frosts/winters and ensure that the rocks look as good as when they first went in. 20

Strata of the Rocks The strata lines and the shapes of the rocks are very important. By getting a cluster of three, i.e. two lower ones and one onto the next level gives you the area, but you ideally want them to look like they have fallen and have settled to naturally pro-trude from the soil.

Again choosing your plants carefully is hugely important and adding horticultural grit over the whole area would help to keep it down and the weeds under control. Weeding Weeding is highly important, ensuring unwanted weeds such as cooch grass don’t get a firm hold. Once they root underneath the stones it then becomes a real issue. So spraying the area first or making sure it is weed free before you start is a must, otherwise you are creating more work in an area that should be reasonably low maintenance.

So the strata lines - the lines of soil or settlement materials that have formed over billions of years, creating the ridges or layering in the rocks - getting these to flow in the right direction will make it more pleasing to the eye. Once you have put the rocks in, I recommend digging in compost or putting a layer of compost in before planting.

HOW TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM for our overall health by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DIpM, BTAA, BAUK, KFRP

THE ROLE OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM The immune system is a complex intricate powerhouse that is constantly working to fight harmful substances and germs that enter the body through the skin, ears, nose, and the digestive system. The adaptive or specific immune system makes antibodies and uses them to fight certain pathogens to which the body has previously been exposed. Without our immune systems we would be powerless to these invaders and would become very ill and indeed die.

Contact me for more information I have clinics in Ledbury and Corse, Gloucestershire Contact me on:

SIGNS OF A WEAK IMMUNE SYSTEM Sometimes the immune system becomes compromised and this can happen for many reasons, one of the biggest factors is stress. When this happens and our immunity is diminished, we become more susceptible to illness. Some of the tell-tale signs of a compromised immune system include:

T: 01531 579 035 M: 07904 457 075 or email me at

helen@complete-balance.co.uk You can also find out more information and article on my brand-new website:

t Increased susceptibility to colds and virus t Allergies t Cold sores

t Digestive issues

t Generalised aches and pains t Problems with certain organs THINGS THAT CAN WEAKEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM The immune system can become weakened for many reasons; sometimes this can start to happen gradually and then escalate into something more serious. Some of the things that cause this include: t Stress t Worry t Troublesome relationships t Nervous system issues 26

26

t Allergies

including our immune systems. Please also see my article on sleep and its importance to our health

t Underlying viral, fungal or bacterial issues t Certain medications

Look at your diet Look at including more fresh fruit and vegetables and if you eat meat and fish increase your lean meats and fish and reduce your red and fatty meat intake. Also consider eating more good fats such as olive oil and avocados and avocado oil. Consider reducing dairy intake and definitely switch to organic dairy. Avoid low fat options as they are generally full of additional nasty ingredients. Consider also eating less wheat products and processed foods, reduce your intake of sugar and cut out anything with artificial sweeteners as they act like poison in the body. The Mediterranean diet which emphasises lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, good heathy fats and oily fish is probably one of the best for our general health.

t Electromagnetic frequencies t Poor diet t Poor lifestyle choices t Poor hygiene t Poor sleep THE NERVE THAT GOVERNS THE IMMUNE RESPONSE The immune response is governed by the vagus nerve. By activating this nerve we can reduce inflammation, stimulate the correct immune response, control immune cells and prevent disease. Ways to activate the vagal function include deep breathing, gentle stretching, doing the things we enjoy, meditation, and cold immersion, to name a few! For more information please see my article on the vagus nerve on my website.

Consider allergies, intolerance and food sensitivities Allergies, intolerance and food sensitivities can all weaken the immune system. These sensitivities are incredibly complex and are triggered in the immune system as it interprets the offending substance as an enemy. Most often the immune response is misinterpreting the substance and a cascade of unpleasant symptoms ensue. You could consider visiting a kinesiologist for help with identifying and where possible, resolving such issues. I offer this service in my clinic and have variety of tools that I can use to help desensitise an individual where possible.

TOP TIPS TO HELP THE IMMUNE SYSTEM Reduce stress Stress reduction is so important to our general health and wellness. When we are in a stressed state the immune system’s ability to fight off antigens is reduced and this is when we often become ill. Cortisol is secreted when we are in a stressed state and this hormone suppresses the effectiveness of the immune system. So, finding ways to lower your stress is vital for the heathy functioning of your immune system.

I also advise everyone to get into the good habit of reading the labels on foods to check for any nasty unwanted ingredients such as flavour enhancers, sweeteners and unnecessary sugars.

Laugh often Laughter is one of the best medicines, it reduces the body’s production of several stress hormones and increases the body’s production of the feel-good hormones and endorphins. A good laugh can relieve physical tension and can leave your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes! Laughter has been proven to increase immune cells and infection fighting antibodies.

SUPPLEMENTS THAT HELP THE IMMUNE SYSTEM Some of the more generic vitamins and minerals that can help immune function include: t Vit C t Zinc

Get a good night’s sleep Sleep improves health in many ways, and it is vitally important that you are getting enough for your unique needs. People differ with their need for sleep, however science has concluded that less than 6 hours can have detrimental effects on our health

t Selenium t Vit D3 t Mineral blends . . . / continued on page 28 27

. . . / continued from page 27 There are several other vitamins, minerals and remedies that can be used for immune function depending on individual needs. In practice I take a detailed consultation from my clients asking them lots of questions. This then helps me tailor a treatment regime that is specific to their needs. I also test for specific supplements and remedies that will help with their individual biochemistry. FEED YOUR GOOD GUT BACTERIA Your gut is your powerhouse for your health in many ways, but it is directly interrelated with immune response. I will talk about this in more detail in another article but at the very least feeding your gut with a wide variety fruits and vegetables gives it the fibre it needs to populate with good bacteria. Another useful tactic is to take a good broad-spectrum probiotic supplement. Please note though probiotics are not all created equal you need to get a good supplement that does not contain any fillers - and please avoid the probiotic drinks as they are full of sugar.

W

e would like to thank our audiences, actors, performers and volunteers for their continued support and to assure everyone that we will be resuming normal service as soon as it is deemed safe to do so

RESOLVE ANY UNDERLYING FUNGAL, BACTERIAL OR PARASITE ISSUES Underlying issues with fungal, bacterial or parasite infections can often be the cause of lowered immune function. These can often go undiscovered for years and then surface when we are particularly stressed, for example. I will test clients for these things to make sure they are not causing problems.

In the meantime The National Theatre is streaming free full length Plays every Thursday go to ‘National Theatre at Home’ for more information.

RESOLVE ANY TROUBLESOME ISSUES IN YOUR LIFE Anything that is causing stress in your life is potentially affecting your immune system, so look at ways in which you can resolve troublesome issues. Sometimes we can’t resolve things literally, but we can find a way to resolve our responses to these things. ***********

Summer Term Starts Soon!

D

on’t let current circumstances stop you learning - Language for Fun has risen to the challenge and is now providing online group classes right in your living room/office/ garden! If only we could learn a language over a coffee or a glass of wine like the people in the picture to the right. Those days will come again. In the meantime, as we wish to continue to provide the fun, social outlet and friendship that our classes offer (along with language learning of course!) to current learners and new alike, many of our face-to-face group classes have moved online. You can join us for the next term of courses from the comfort of your armchair.

time to do it, and if you’re working from home, some of our sessions will fit perfectly into an hour’s break. You could even eat lunch while you join us! You’ll be able to interact online with a local group and your tutor, and when this is all over, we can meet in person just like the students in the photo (bottom left). You’ll also receive all our bespoke materials in a pack through the post so you can have a real workbook and printed materials. Just like in our ‘real’ classes, places are limited so we can keep a small group feel and get to know each other. Nothing is as we know it but this is going to be great!

As soon as confinement is over, we will once again be hosting social events and face-to-face classes where you can meet like-minded people in pubs and other lovely venues in and around Malvern and Ledbury. If you’ve always wanted to learn or improve your fluency in a language, now is the perfect

We have also started French, Spanish and Italian-specific Facebook groups to help you chat to other learners and support independent study. We will continue to offer lovely learning together in different ways until things return to normal. À bientôt, hasta pronto, a presto from The Language for Fun Malvern and Worcester Team 38

Walking through the COVID19 Crisis by Tom Fisher, Leadon Vale Ramblers

Eat in or Takeaway

T

his information is correct as of 22 March 2020 but please check the latest government advice.

NOW OFFERING

DELIVERY SERVICE

During the crisis most organised walks have been cancelled but we can still enjoy the pleasures of a country walk PROVIDED we avoid the busy places, such as the main Malvern car parks and provided we keep two metres apart from anyone else.

via BromyardFood.uk

www.bromyardfood.uk Or call 01531 632843 to place your order

So here are some suggestions: t The Ledbury bookshops have plenty of excellent books of local walks

We are closed for takeaway and eat in until further notice.

t The bookshops also supply your local Ordnance Survey maps. Get the Explorer 1:25000 series and plan your own walk. Ledbury is annoyingly right on the corner of three OS maps but you could get your own map centred on your own home by visiting the Ordnance Survey website and searching for custom-made maps.

Plans for summer include an outdoor eating area. Thank you to all our loyal customers and keep safe Winner of Word Search was Tony Page from Ross Road.

t There’s masses of material online – www. herefordshireramblers.org.uk has lots of walks under the “our walks” tabs t www.ramblers.org.uk has a fine series of walks under ramblersroutes t You can get apps for your phone such as Alltrails with lots of local walks

We are a family run traditional fish and chip shop situated in the heart of Ledbury up a secluded alleyway opposite the clock tower. We offer eat in meals, including breaksfasts, as well as takeaway and pride ourselves in cooking fresh, sustainably sourced food. We also have a varied range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options.

t Get the ViewRanger app and download some premium map “tiles” wherever you want to walk. With ViewRanger and other apps, like the OS app, you will get a GPS locator so you will always know where you are. However if you are using an app, do make sure you have a fully charged phone when you start and have a paper map back-up. And remember smartphones really do not like rain, so a waterproof case is a good idea. t If you would like specific advice on a walk you are planning you can email tomfisher52@gmail.com

nsects are everywhere, often overlooked, but playing vital roles in almost every ecosystem.

Pollinators When you think about the benefits of having insects around, pollination is probably the first thing that springs to mind. There’s a good reason for this, since 87% of all plant species require animal pollination and most of this is delivered by insects. In fact, around three-quarters of all crop types grown by humans need to be pollinated by insects. Bees are the most famous pollinators but all kinds of insects play important roles as pollinators, including flies, beetles, butterflies, moths and hoverflies. The poo police For most of us, a big pile of poo is a pretty unappealing prospect. But for some creatures, there’s no finer sight and these flies, beetles and other waste-loving wildlife prevent poo from building up in pastures, improve soils and even help control pests.

Incredible Insects

Dung beetles are the champions here but worms and flies also help out. In summer you might spot yellow dung flies courting on cow pats, males competing for the attention of the females that lay their eggs in the dung. 42

WINES: A good choice – sparkling

S

parkling wines are a very popular choice for many people and can make a dining event into a special occasion, and a celebration into a great experience. Numerous countries globally produce sparkling wines and the popularity of ‘sparklers’ increases every year. Sparkling wines can be enjoyed on their own; they offer excellent value, whilst continually impressing, with their wonderful perlages (bubbles) adding style. Balfour 1503 Foxwood Cuvee NV (Grapes: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier) is by producer Hush Heath in Kent. 1503 is the foundation year for Hush Heath Manor. Extra dry, refreshing and crisp, a favourite for many. Corte Molino Prosecco DOC NV (Grapes: Glera, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay) is from producer Borgo Molino Vigne et Vini. Prosecco is hugely popular and a regular choice for lovers of sparkling wines. This DOC, extra dry, Italian sparkler is fantastic for pre-dining drinks, as well as

being a fabulous accompaniment to seafood, fish and white meats. Most Wanted Pinot Grigio Sparkling NV from Italy (Grapes: Pinot Grigio), by producer Cuvage SRL, has freshness and lightness complementing the citrus and other fruit flavours, perfectly. A great partnership with seafood dishes, particularly. Les Pionniers Champagne NV (Grapes: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier), by producer Piper Heidsieck, is a regular selection for numerous occasions. This aged production pleases the nasal senses with berry fruits, enticing the mouthfeel to its freshness, ready for the palate sensation, which follows superbly. Les Pionniers Vintage Champagne (Grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir), by producer Piper Heidsieck, is a production often found on the ‘top table’. Again, this aged wine is fresh and possesses a well-balanced experience 45

throughout, from the fruity bouquet to the last drop. These wines are a selection I have sourced from Co-op stores, which are available and open to everyone. Excellent quality beverages, including wines, spirits and beers, can be found at Co-op stores. The Shop At Bromsberrow RE-LAUNCH

T

he Community Shop is now into its seventh year which is a tribute to loyal customers and our band of volunteers. We have received support from the Plunkett Foundation, of which we are members, who provided a “Health Check” and this helped us focus on the necessary improvements. The last, but one, was to radically update the shop and in particular enclose the first half of the shop to provide a more intimate and warmer atmosphere. The cafe has also received a makeover and a new name – ‘The Snug’. We had planned to celebrate this achievement in April but, as

we are all very aware, Covid19 struck and all events had to be cancelled/postponed until this very serious pandemic was over. This has obviously affected many of the events we had planned, which is a great disappointment to us but we had no choice. The improvements were timely as our trade, in the emergency, is three times greater and we now offer a comprehensive range of fresh local fruit, vegetables and meat. We have reduced our opening hours to allow us to provide a delivery service to those who are housebound. This delivery service has been well received and now accounts for a third of our activity. Our amended

opening hours are shown in our advert, with website details and how to contact us. ‘The Snug’ had to close but once we get the all clear to open again, we will be offering a range of hot and cold drinks, together with snacks in congenial surroundings. We have also had to temporarily close the Post Office, usually open two mornings a week, and Shabby Chic (French period furniture, artefacts and more modern retro items). We are (in normal times) a Community Hub using ‘The Snug’ for Community Groups and a popular meeting point for walkers and cyclists. Last year we initiated regular Community Lunches which were well supported with good food and good company. We are also aware from a recent village survey that there are other needs (e.g. lack of mobility, loneliness etc.) and we aim to address these issues. We will be doing the research to see what would be welcomed and utilised here – and we now have plenty of time to look at all these things!!

46

So what is the last thing we need to do and how could you help us? We will need more members and volunteers once we are fully up and running again. If you like what we do and what we provide why not become a member? This can be done for as little as £1, although you can pay more. This would show your commitment to the community and allow us to demonstrate that what we provide is appreciated and supported in our community. We offer a range of opportunities to volunteers of all ages, whether it is learning new skills or working in good company. Call Marie, our manager, to discuss.

Lockdown

article & photographs by Geraldine Woods-Humphrey

A

pril 1, the air was still under one of the strongest high pressures we’ve ever seen. A gentle dawn chorus had begun, the avian choir pianissimo before the great crescendo to come in June. Two male woodpeckers supplied a staccato rhythm as they hammered out their territorial claims from favoured trees. Their declarations of ownership resonated in the natural auditorium that is made by the Hills here; two actors in an ancient Greek theatre. And what a Fools’ Day it was, much of the world in lockdown fighting an enemy only visible under a microscope; the stuff of science fiction, not Ealing Comedy. As those rival woodpeckers demonstrated, humans may be in lockdown, but the natural world goes on. Now in May, the Hills are awash in a sea of bluebells, the nesting season is in full swing and soon the fledglings will start to arrive at my bird feeders. During this time of isolation

feeding the birds in your garden can be a welcome distraction, providing something to keep the family both occupied and entertained. In the light of the Covid-19 pandemic, growing your own vegetables has taken on a new significance. Garden centres and seed companies announced unprecedented sales as people dug to provide their own vegetables. First time growers may be disappointed by the results … crops fail, pests invade and the weather is not always on your side. But at least most of you gardeners won’t have to fight off a whippet that has taken a liking to your kale. You will though, I hope, come to see gardening as an opening to understanding how the natural world works and how it can benefit both your physical and mental well-being. In an idle moment, and there haven’t been many in this period of isolation, I sorted through my collection of old cookery books 53

written during the early part of the 20th century. I love these books not only for their recipes, but for the social history lying within their pages. One, written by Josephine Terry, cookery writer for the Mirror during the war, was full of strange and wonderful substitutes for items we all take for granted today. Flaky pastry made with cheese instead of fat might seem a step too far for the modern cook. Potatoes made important substitutes for rice and cornflour. An apple pie recipe using mashed potato as the base instead of pastry might have been useful in March when flour was rarer than hen’s teeth. The potatoes were salted and sweetened and the apples, cooked, placed on top. Desperate times called for desperate measures and during WWII, Britain really was short of food.

Lion Cubs meet the Mane Man Once used to their new surroundings, keepers introduced the youngsters to the rest of the pride, including dad, five-year-old Tsavo and his brothers, uncles Jilani and Jengo.

S

even African lion cubs at West Midland Safari Park have had a busy month, exploring their new home and meeting their father for the first time. The two sets of cubs, now at around five months old, recently had their first day out on the safari, in preparation for meeting the guests for the first time on 15th February. Although a bit hesitant at first, within no time, they were chasing each other around, playing with anything they could get their paws on and attempting to climb ‘lion rock’, the large, sculpted vantage point in the centre of their habitat.

Head Keeper of Carnivores, Chris Hodgkins, said, “When we introduced the cubs to the rest of the pride, they were very inquisitive and not scared at all. If anything, the adults were more wary of the cubs, purely because they didn’t want to get a ‘telling off’ from mothers, Amber and Scar, for getting too close! The youngsters are proving to be very mischievous and playful, plus they have so much confidence. We’ve watched them chase some of the adults around the safari, pounce on them whilst they’re sleeping, and tug their tails, so they are proving to be a bit of a handful!” He continued, “First, introductions were made to the adults who have encountered cubs before, followed by the rest of the pride and finally to the three big males. The cubs showed no fear at all 54

and ran straight over to Tsavo and his brothers where they were soon seen biting their ears and tails and tugging on their manes. The boys withstand this behaviour for a while, but when they’ve had enough, they let them know with a growl or a forceful pat on the head!” Now the cubs have been introduced to the rest of the pride, they stay together as a group over-night and keepers often find the cubs snuggled up to a different ‘auntie’ or ‘uncle’ in the mornings. The next steps for the cubs are to get them used to a few extra vehicles in the safari, ready for their debut with the public this half term and to celebrate, the Park will be hosting a few extra lion-themed activities. Guests will be able to have a go on the Park’s new ‘Roar-o-Meter’, where they can see if they can roar as loud as a lion. Those who post their attempts on the Park’s

n on first day out on Safari… Facebook page, will be in with the chance of winning a Family Annual Pass to the Safari Park. Additionally, guests will be able to learn some fun facts about lions and see which members of the pride they have spotted out on the safari, by studying a new ID chart. The seven cubs, named Hunter, Hercules, Hernatty, Harabi, Hodge, Havoc and Hira, bring the total number of African lions at the Safari Park to 18. West Midland Safari Park opens daily for the summer season from 15th February. Admission prices are £24 for adults, £20 for children aged 3-15 years and £22 for concessions. Children under the age of three are free. Admission includes a summer Free Return Ticket and discounts of up to 35% are available when booking in advance online. Rides for the adventure Theme Park are charged extra. Further information and a range of VIP experiences, including a tour of the lion house to see the cubs up close and personal, are available from the Park’s website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. A Hovering Experience article & photos by Pamela Green

I

was always under the impression that I had experienced all modes of travel; that was until I saw two hovercrafts. I was with my husband Michael, on the Isle of Wight, and we had taken a bus trip to Ryde for the day. As our bus pulled into the terminal we saw the two hovercrafts on the beach, so we left the bus and decided to investigate.

Harbour and back, as well as trips to most parts of the Isle of Wight. Unfortunately the wind didn't calm before it was time to go home, so this would have to be something to look forward to on our next trip to the island. In March this year we returned to the Isle of Wight, and this time the weather was glorious. On our second day on the island, the sun shone and the sky was blue; there was no sign of the beastly wind, so we caught the bus to Ryde and were delighted to be told that the hovercraft was running and would be leaving in thirty minutes. We had two friends with us, Chris and

That was two years ago, and the two havercrafts were parked on the beach because of the bad weather and high winds. On enquiry, we discovered that you could, in good weather, have a hover experience to Portsmouth

Joyce, who wanted to accompany us, so the four of us went on a Hover Experience. It's advertised as “Hover Travel, Let’s Take Flight” and it certainly felt as if we were going to take off. As the hovercraft rose on its cushion of air we all started laughing at the exhilarating sensation. The inside of the craft was set out like the interior of an aircraft; and we even had a steward who explained about the craft and where to find our lifejackets It took just ten minutes to reach Southsea Hover Terminal where we caught the hover bus into the shopping centre. It was amazing and we all enjoyed our trip.

We had a light lunch and then went for a walk along Southsea front. Time passed quickly that day and it was soon time to catch the hovercraft back to the island. The friendly staff were wonderful and we all agreed it was a great way to get to and from the island, and the steward even told us how to catch the old train back to Shanklin. It was quicker than the bus and dropped us near our hotel.
