Eastnor Cricket Club News April 2020 t’s hard to believe given the very wet winter we have had, but weather permitting the new Cricket season is fast approaching and at Eastnor Cricket Club we have been hard at work making preparations both on and off the field, with our team of volunteers starting to get the ground and facilities ready for the new season.
I
The colts section are aiming for another busy season and our colts registration evenings will be held on Wednesday April 8th and 15th from 6.30pm at the ground. Coaching will commence on Wednesday 22nd April continuing over the following weeks and again this year the club will be taking part in the ECB All Stars cricket initiative for young juniors.
On the playing front the first and second teams will again be competing in the Worcester Cricket league; the first team start on Saturday 18th April with an away game at Coombs Wood, followed by the first home game on Saturday 25th April. The second team fixtures will commence slightly later in May.
Another busy season both on and off the field is planned and we will again be hosting Herefordshire County Cricket 1 day and 3 day fixtures, the highlight of which will be when Worcestershire CC take on Herefordshire in a prestige 1 day fixture on Friday 17th April.
New players of all ages and abilities are always made welcome at Eastnor so if you are new to the area, wanting to get back into the game or simply looking to give cricket a try please contact the club everyone will be made welcome.
For any further details on any of the above or any aspect of the club please see the club website: http://eastnorcricket.clubbuzz.co.uk/ or contact Steve Onions at Clubsport Ledbury 01531 635242
We operate the two Saturday adult sides in the Worcester County league, and have a social Sunday friendly side with matches throughout the summer, plus a host of social events and of course the bar is always open to members and guests on match days.

from the editor ... Hello and welcome to the April edition of the Ledbury Focus.
What we can do is try to help each other wherever we can. The elderly are the hardest hit by this situation and Age UK would welcome anyone who is willing to help with things like shopping for an older person who is house-bound, collecting medication and numerous other errands. So please contact them (details on page 15) if you can help in any way.
I usually like to make this a light-hearted introduction to the magazine, but this month it’s not that easy with the way our lives have been turned upsidedown by the Coronavirus. Everyone has been affected in some way, from schools being closed, to over-70’s having to self-isolate, quite apart from all the unfortunate souls who have contracted this dreadful illness.
For those of you who have businesses that have been affected, whether your business is small or large, there is financial help available to you. Talk to your bank about Business Interruption Loans, and talk to your mortgage lender about a payment holiday. If you have a tax bill that you can’t pay, then talk to HMRC about deferring your payment.
However, this country has faced and overcome crises before, and if we all do our bit, we will overcome this one. This situation won’t last for long, and we all just need to stay strong and weather the storm.
One last thing, if you are planning on attending any of the events listed this month, I would suggest that you check with the organisers before you go, in case of cancellation.
So, follow the advice being given by the authorities, and take sensible precautions and above all, stay calm. I’ve always taken the view that when faced with a situation that can’t be changed or controlled, worrying about it is pointless – simply accept it, and get on with life. That may sound a little trite, but really, what is the point of worrying about something you can’t do anything about?
Until next month, stay happy and healthy.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GUT HEALTH for our overall health by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DIpM, BTAA, BAUK, KFRP
GUT HEALTH OVERVIEW The importance of gut health is at the core of good general health and well-being. So much research is now been discovered concerning this that it is irrefutable. If we have problems with our digestive system you can virtually guarantee we have other health issues going on also. The importance of this area of health research will I believe become a hot topic in the years to come and applying protocols and strategies to balance the gut will be employed to influence health and effect disease.

THE GUT MICROBIOME The gut microbiome refers to the human gastrointestinal microbiota and is also referred to as gut flora or gut microbiota. This is basically referring to the microrganisms that live in the human digestive tract. The bacteria in our gut perform endless tasks for us from digesting our food, regulating our immune systems, protecting us against other harmful bacteria to the production of vitamins such as a whole host of B vitamins and vitamin K.
or email me at
helen@complete-balance.co.uk You can also find out more information and article on my brand-new website:
www.complete-balance.co.uk Newsletter
HEALTHY BACTERIA The healthy bacteria that resides in our gut is essential to our good health. These healthy bacteria help us to fight infections and virus’ and helps our immune systems work properly. The key is therefore to use practices that enhance the good heathy bacteria and that reduce the presence of any detrimental bacteria.
Sign up for my newsletter via my website in order to receive health information and promotional offers.
HEALTH ISSUES THAT RELATE TO A FAULTY MICROBIOME t Digestive issues throughout the gastrointestinal tract t SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) t Frequent colds and infections 12
t Allergies
cause significant damage in the gut as they basically destroy both good and bad bacteria.
t Skin problems
t Get a dog. Studies have shown that people who have a dog in their life have more diversity in their gut microbiome!
t Fungal infections t Parasite issues t Lowered immunity
t Avoid anti-bacterial soaps and hand sanitizers, it is thought that these products are not good for the gut because they kill all bacteria whether good or bad. Maybe look at using natural products.
t More serious conditions could also indicate issues in the microbiome these could include arthritic conditions, autoimmune conditions, other issues related to poor immunity.
t Resolve any bacterial, fungal or parasitic infections
BASIC ADVICE TO HELP YOUR MICROBIOME t Eat more fibre specifically in the form of high fruit and vegetables, this adds the food that the gut needs to thrive.
t Spend time outdoors, spending time outdoors in nature is good for us on many levels but research has shown that people who live in the countryside have more microbiological diversity than those who live in cities.
t Eat a diverse range of fruits and vegetables, your body likes diversity in the diet. t Eat fermented foods if this is relevant for you, sometimes these foods can cause sensitivities in some individual’s, so it is best to check with your health practitioner.
***********
t Avoid snaking, snacking between meals means your digestive system cannot work as well as it should as it is constantly having to break down new material
HOW I WORK IN PRACTICE In practice I will take a detailed consultation from you asking lost of questions about your health, symptoms and lifestyle. After this I will advise on a plan of action. This will often consist of some handson treatment along with recommendations for supplements and lifestyle factors to be incorporated to help resolve your problems. Restoring good gut health is not a quick fix and can take several months even years dependant on the individual.
t Take a probiotic supplement that is right for you. Broad spectrum probiotics are often appropriate when there is no specific illness present. However, if specific issues are present it is better to look at probiotics that will help with the specific problems you are facing. At a very basic level populating the gut with a good probiotic helps to crowd out any unwanted bacteria that may be causing underlying health issues. Avoid the popular probiotic drinks however as these are full of sugar.
With the therapies I offer I can correct for example, mechanical problems that might be causing you problems in the digestive tract specifically by using the Bowen Technique. With Health Kinesiology I can test your body for specific vitamin, mineral and remedies along with lifestyle considerations that will help you.
t Choose polyphenol rich foods such as nuts, seeds, berries, olive oil and brassicas. Polyphenols feed the good gut bacteria and help them grow and crowd out the bad bacteria.
***********
t Avoid artificial sweeteners which have been known to cause damage in the gut as well as many other problems in the body.
CONTACT ME FOR MORE INFORMATION I offer a free 15-minute telephone consultation so you can find out more about the therapies I practice and how they could help you. Contact me on T: 01531 579 035 or M: 07904 457 075, or via email on E: helen@complete-balance.co.uk
t Reduce sugar, wheat and processed food intake, these foods are all known to have detrimental impact upon the gut and can cause many issues. t Avoid antibiotics where possible, antibiotics can 13

Ernest “Roy” Thompson celebrating his
100th Birthday
E
rnest “Roy” Thompson celebrated his 100th birthday on 29th February 2020, reading cards and messages from family and well-wishers, but for Roy the most special greeting taking pride of place came from Her Majesty the Queen. Surrounded by his family, the special party continued well into the evening with reminiscences and memories of an extraordinary life. Born in Derby, Roy, as he is known, became an apprentice learning to become an extremely gifted
mechanical engineer. His first main employment was to work laying cables in South Wales. He was then drafted into making torpedoes for the war effort, being one of the youngest to turn the massive shells, the designs of which were constantly being modified by the war office. After some years he joined Hoover and oversaw the production of washing machines, heading a team of several hundred employees manufacturing thousands of machines each week, such was the popularity of the product. 20
After retiring to the rural village of Bromsberrow Heath, Roy a keen ‘radio ham’ since his teenage years, was quick to join the radio enthusiasts club in Gloucester where he made many new friendships. His love of gardening ensured he grew most of his own produce. Tragedy struck when his wife of many years was diagnosed with dementia and Roy nursed her for 23 years until her death. Roy was often seen driving his car to the local village shop to collect his pension or
shopping at the age of 99, but feels now is the time to stop! A charming and popular character in the village, remarkable Roy will be enjoying his celebrations for many days to come with plans to have additional parties for friends in the village. Article & photographs by Jan Long

Scouting History on Brownsea Island
article & photos by Pamela Green
O
movement had grown into an international organisation. It now has over 40 million Scouts and 10 million Guides worldwide.
n 1st August 1907 twenty boys pitched their tents on Brownsea Island, little realizing how important and far-reaching this event would be. Lord Baden-Powell's experimental camp, based on scouting skills learnt in the army during the Boer War, set the foundations for the Scouting and Guiding movements today.
After the death of Charles van Raalte, his wife Florence stayed on Brownsea until 1925 when it passed to Mary Bonham-Christie. She allowed a Scout camp of 500 people in 1932 to celebrate their silver jubilee, but after that camps were no longer permitted until the National Trust took ownership in 1963. The island was officially re-opened by Lady Baden-Powell and the camp area was cleared and re-opened. In 1967, a commemorative stone was erected near the campsite and today it is still a popular site for enrolments and investitures. The National Trust reopened the original campsite and regular camps began again. Today, Scouts and Guides from around 75 different countries visit the island every year.
The island is now owned by the National Trust. My husband Michael and I found out about it when we were visiting Pool Harbour. When we heard about the history of the island, and of how you could visit the Nature Reserve by ferry we decided to try it. Lord Baden-Powell was famous for his success during the Boer War, using boys to assist the troops during the Siege of Mafeking. He introduced some of the scouting and military skills to young boys back at home. He was keen to hold an experimental camp to test out some of his ideas and when Charles van Raalte invited him to hold it on Brownsea Island he agreed. Lord Baden-Powell valued the outdoors and nature, and planned his eight-day camp to reflect this. The boys were all from mixed backgrounds; the Boys Brigade, in Poole and Bournemouth and some from public schools.
We found daily talks about nature, family trails, even electric buggy tours for the less mobile. Wildlife spotters are told to keep an eye open for the red squirrels, but with 180 scouts on the island that day all the squirrels were in hiding; however we did see lots of different birds especially peacocks which roamed everywhere. Outdoor activities run throughout the year, with archery, den building, and learning to be a ranger for the day.
Soon after his experimental camp, Lord BadenPowell published his book 'Scouting for Boys'. In 1910, and with the help of his sister Agnes, Girl Guiding was launched to meet the increasing demand from girls wanting to join in. By the time Lord Baden-Powell died in 1941, the Scouting

Fraudsters are exploiting the spread of COVID19 Coronavirus to facilitate various types of fraud and cyber crime. Since February 2020, the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) has identified 21 reports of fraud where Coronavirus was mentioned, with victim losses totalling over £800k. Ten of these reports were made by victims that attempted to purchase protective face masks from fraudulent sellers. Reporting numbers are expected to rise as the virus continues to spread across the world.

utterflies and moths are important pollinators and, along with caterpillars, are vital food for birds like robins and blue tits as well as bats. However, their habitats have faced catastrophic declines and once-common species like the small tortoiseshell have dropped by up to 80% in the last 30 years in some areas. An ideal butterfly garden has a wide variety of flowers throughout the year to support their life cycles – for butterflies and moths emerging from hibernation, egg laying females, caterpillars and then adults. Early flowering species include dandelions, aubretia and native bluebells which could be followed by buddleia and red valerian, wildflowers and long grass. Ivy flowers late into autumn. Even a small flowerbed or flowering window box could throw declining numbers a lifeline, especially in urban areas.
Spring
This year’s Wild About Gardens campaign, run jointly by The Wildlife Trusts and Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), is calling on gardeners to get growing to help the UK’s falling numbers of butterflies and moths.

VOLUNTEERING FOR WILDLIFE by Teresa and Andy Williams, volunteers at the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust shop in Ledbury
From our perspective the great attraction of working in the shop is that there are a variety of tasks you can undertake. If you don't fancy the customer service side of the job, you can sort the donations ready for sale. Alternatively, you can spend time on-line researching some of the more obscure donations to make sure that the price that is eventually charged in the shop is fair and reasonable. Whatever you do, you become part of the team.
W
hen we were working full-time we always knew that we would do some voluntary work together when we retired to keep ourselves busy. Having reached that stage we realised that we particularly wanted to do something that related to our specific interests but equally was of value to the local community. We had been members of Herefordshire Wildlife Trust for many years and when we received a circular asking for volunteers at its charity shop in Ledbury it seemed like a sign! After an interview with the Shop Manager, we were accepted as volunteers and we have been working there ever since.
We had no background in retail when we started and had never even operated a till, but whatever area interests you, support and guidance is always available from the Manager. You're never asked to do something that you don't feel comfortable with. Additionally, because of an interest in crafting, one half of our 'double-act' has been able to create items for sale in the shop, notably paper hedgehogs from second-hand books. Other items are now rolling off the production line! For us, the best part has been the interaction with customers. Many are regular visitors and you get to build a relationship with them. We have met some great people and it's been really 38
fascinating to find what interests different people through their purchases. However, we are always conscious that this is a commercial operation and if we can make the customers feel welcome, they are more likely to return (and spend more money!) Ultimately, though, I think the important thing for us is the knowledge that our volunteering, and that of every other single volunteer in the shop, is making a difference for the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust. The more money that can be raised then the aims of the Trust are more likely to be met. That is a very satisfying feeling. Give it a go - and make a difference!

Vet Talk with Martin Leith S BVetMed MRCV
Behind the scenes at Leadon Vale Vets
H
ello from all the staff at Leadon Vale Veterinary Centre. We wanted to give you the opportunity to have a look around our recently refurbished practice and see it through the eyes of our Practice Dog, Dr Bertie Leith. Hello everyone I'm Dr Bertie Leith … but you can call me Bertie. I’m going to take this opportunity to show you
what happens to your pet during their visit here, with some added behind the scenes insight: On arrival at the practice, there is a friendly and welcoming reception area and if I am lucky enough I may be offered treats on arrival - if I am not in for an operation that day. There are separate dog and cat waiting areas, which 40
help pets feel safe from harm. Before I am admitted, I will be weighed in reception, and then taken into one of the four consulting rooms for a preop check. I am then taken behind the scenes to the prep room where my leg is clipped and an IV catheter placed. If I require any blood tests this is also taken and the tests
are run here in our onsite laboratory. Once this is done, I am then placed in a comfortable dog kennel away from any cats, which have their own separate room. Â When the vet and vet nurse are ready, I am then gently
and quietly anaesthetised in the prep room before being taken to theatre for my operation. Once my operation is over, I am placed back in my kennel with a warm blanket and if required, a heated blanket. During this time I will be monitored and taken
out for toilet breaks, as well as fed and watered. After which, a discharge time is assigned for my family to come and collect me. If you have any questions or need any advice about your pet please contact us.Â

It’s not what you see ... it’s how you see it article & photographs by Geraldine Woods-Humphrey
I
t’s evening; the sun has the Midas touch, turning everything to gold. I’m homeward bound, the dog at my side, enjoying this mystical time when the land shape shifts from day to night, shadows creating a different world.
Myth and folklore are wound around many of our trees. It was once believed that if you passed an ailing child through a cleft in an ash tree it would be cured. In Herefordshire it was unlucky to burn elder, which, if planted near the home protected it from evil spirits. Oak trees abound with myths and legends from their ancient association with Druids to the future Charles II hiding in one after the battle of Worcester. Often rowan and birch were hung above doors, or even stuck in vegetable plots to ward off evil spirits.
After such a long, sunless winter I’m not hurrying back. The evening sun shines through translucent April green leaves like stained glass in a cathedral. The air is end of day still, the earth holding its breath before the night shift begins. The only sound is the squelch of my boots on the muddy path. Young trees cluster around an ancient oak, its gnarled boughs surely the repository of ancient myths and legends waiting to be told. Purple silver birch tops glow bronze in the light of the setting sun. Amidst the trees the elderly oak seems ready to tell those legends to those around it, of elves, woodland sprites and mischievous fairies stealing milk from the cottagers’ kitchens.
Daffodils were thought to be unlucky if they face you, trumpets down, and never walk through a bluebell wood because the fairies could whisk you away. Blue tinges the woodland floor, bluebells peeping through. I walk swiftly on. What do you see in the tree? Maybe nothing at all, after all it’s only a split tree, isn’t it?
An ancient ash tree catches my eye, split so long ago who can remember when or how? I stop, for staring at me from the blackened trunk is a ghoulish lichengrey face, its eyes dark, sinister hollows. The green man, trapped for eternity in the ash tree? Or a skull of some tortured woodland brownie? The darkening day is playing tricks with my eyes, my imagination running wild. I looked again, there is definitely a face, and there, an elf in a pointed hat and is that a goblin above it? I look clos-er, the face is still there, will always be there because my brain has decided it's what I saw. Easy to see how myths could begin. 43
Herefordshire’s Most Inspirational Plant Centre
April is such a busy time in the garden; there is the lawn to regularly cut, the borders to maintain, final spring pruning to be completed, seeds to sow, vegetables to plant out and of course the weeds to suppress and control! It’s also time to plan your crop of tomatoes. There are hundreds of different varieties and types of tomato available nowadays, from traditional round reds, yellow pear-shaped, green striped and even black ones. They range in size from the mammoth Italian Beefsteak to tiny varieties smaller than a pea. Everyone can successfully grow a tomato plant, even if you don’t have green fingers or have never grown any plants before. If you are keen and have some experience, there is still time in April to sow tomato ; they require a warm windowsill or heated greenhouse to get them started. They must have a really well-lit position or the seedlings will become leggy and drawn in just a few days. Care is also needed not to get the compost too wet whilst they are young – let it dry out on top between waterings.
Alternatively you can just buy individual plants in April that are ideal for planting into your greenhouse – ideally the temperature should remain above 12ºC at night so you might need a heater on those chilly frosty nights we often get this month (if the leaves of your young plants turn purple, it’s a sign they have got too cold). If you don’t have a greenhouse, you can grow tomatoes outside in a sunny sheltered spot but I would advise that you wait until the end of May when all danger of cold night frosts has passed. Most tomato varieties are grown as “cordons” – you train one main stem up a stake and remove all the side shoots – this keeps the plant upright, allows the flowers to protrude into the open and the fruit to ripen earlier. There are many traditional varieties that suit cordon growing such as the ‘Moneymaker’ tomato which became popular in the 1960’s for its uniform size, reliability and flavour, and it’s still one of the most popular varieties. A great favourite of mine is the ‘Gardeners Delight’ tomato, which is one of the easiest to grow. It’s
usually grown as a bush form so there is no need to remove any side shoots. It produces long trusses of smaller fruits that are juicy and sweet – ideal to pop into a lunchbox! It really is easy to grow tomatoes, as I mentioned at the start of this article: everyone can grow tomatoes. If you have never tried before then please have a go. Here’s the easiest way: You need a pot or hanging basket that measures about 30cm (12 inches) across the top. Fill it with a good compost - ideally a vegetable compost as this contains more of the vital nutrients the plant needs. Pop in one plant of the either ‘Tumbling Tom Red’ tomato or ‘Tumbling Tom Yellow’ tomato. Then all you have to do is put your pot or hanging basket in the sunniest part of your garden. Water it every day and add a liquid tomato feed once a week. These varieties grow as small bushes and trail over the side of the container – they produce an abundance of sweet red or yellow fruits that are very juicy and tasty – ideal for beginner gardeners or even children to try.
Throughout the year Mark will be sharing his ideas for each month, and tips for your garden. If there are any gardening related questions you would like answered, please drop him an email: enquiry@newentplantcentre.co.uk 44
Once you get hooked on tomato growing you might like to grow the world’s heaviest tomato – the current world record for a tomato is 4.377kg (9lb 10.4oz) – that’s more than four bags of sugar! If you need any further advice on “Growing Tomatoes” why not pop along to our FREE talk on tomato growing on the weekend of 18th and 19th April at 2pm. Or drop me an email to: enquiry@newentplantcentre.co.uk

LEDBURY IN BLOOM 2020 “RAZZLE DAZZLE”
T
afternoon. Why not come on out and join them and help keep Ledbury Tidy.
he year started well for Ledbury In Bloom with the splendid news that they will be one of the charities supported by Tesco this spring. “From April 1st, customers will get the chance to use a token to help LIB replenish the aging tubs in The Homend” explained Chairman Clive Gunn.
Across Ledbury other independent groups are already doing their bit. One is looking after The Station building on the initial work of Ledbury In Bloom and Lynne McCrae in particular; the U3A gardening group led by Sally Holliday tends to the beds in the entrance to the Walled Garden, and Wendy Hill does a great job with the Almshouse beds almost single-handedly. A consortium including Amanda Lambourne and involving Busy Bees is taking over the new bed in Queens Walk that was created by the felling of the old firs and then rescued by Ledbury In Bloom.
He went on to say “We are again indebted to Ledbury Town Council who continue to sponsor the hanging baskets which were truly outstanding last year; the change in supplier worked wonders. Ledbury Town Council have also agreed to fund the renewal of the lower troughs at the Top Cross. They were designed by local craftsman John Wadley who built them with wood supplied by Birtsmorton based Ellis Dawe Ltd. Our volunteers have already installed them and planted them up. We know that Ledbury Town Council have plans to create a brighter, tidier and smarter Ledbury; we thank them for all of their efforts.”
However, the onset of Covid-19 demands flexibility. “Most of our volunteers are elderly but we are going to make every effort to carry on and still make Ledbury look ‘Blooming Beautiful’ by working in smaller groups. Having said that, we have an URGENT need for some younger reinforcements. Earlier in the year I offered a "Six Hour Challenge" and that offer is still open: an hour a month for 6 months is all we need if enough people volunteer. We are also worried about our normal sponsors who may be financially troubled by the current situation. Last year we were grateful for some new small donations which helped us to survive. To quote the RHS ‘Grow Social’ campaign:
Ledbury In Bloom hopes to include the community more this year in line with the RHS ‘Grow Social’ campaign for 2020. “After an appeal earlier this year we have new volunteers; a publicised 25% increase sounds great until you realise that this is from 12 to 15” added the chairman. “Under the direction of Deputy, Tina Vass, our volunteers have worked miracles in the past (particularly dealing with all the weeds and rubbish that builds up through the year) with more than a little help from friends, neighbours and other groups but this year they will need to concentrate on horticulture instead.
‘Gardening can bring people together, helping to connect us with each other, ourselves and with nature. That's why we are encouraging you to make new connections in your community by growing together in April 2020.’
Another response to our appeal was from Bosbury Beavers and Cubs, many of whose members come from Ledbury. They hope to tend to some beds in town and use their litter pickers when necessary. They will be out and about on Mondays in the late
“We had hoped that projects that are started this spring will bear fruit throughout the year and beyond but their start may have to be put on hold. We are entered into Heart Of England In Bloom but 50

7. Mix in the cooled soaked dried fruit and fold in the cherries. Serves 12 Preparation time: 30 minues Cooking time: 2 hours
8. Pour half the cake mixture into the tin. Top with the disc of marzipan, then add the remaining cake mixture, and level the top with a spatula.
Ingredients
9. Bake for 2 hours. Check it’s cooked by inserting a skewer to the centre of the cake - if any wet mixture clings to the skewer, return to the oven for another 10 minutes, then check again.
t 250g mixed dried fruit (a mixture of sultanas, currants, raisins and candied mixed peel) t 1 orange, zested and juiced
10. Cool in the tin for 15 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely.
t 500g marzipan t 250g butter, softened
11. Brush the top of the cake with apricot jam.
t 200g light brown soft sugar
12. Roll out half of the remaining marzipan and use the base of the cake as a template to cut out another disc. Place it on top of the cake and crimp the edges.
t 4 eggs, plus 1 beaten to glaze t 175g plain flour t 100g ground almonds
13. Roll the remaining marzipan into 11 equal-sized balls. Brush the marzipan with beaten egg and arrange the balls of marzipan in a circle on top, around the outside, and brush them with a little egg too.
t 1 tsp baking powder t 1 lemon, zested t 2 tsp mixed spice
14. Put under a hot grill for a minute or two until just starting to caramelise – be very careful as the marzipan will burn easily.
t 1 tsp vanilla extract t 100g glacé cherries, halved t 3 tbsp apricot jam
15. Leave to cool and tie a ribbon around the cake. 53

ilitaria has been one of the most popular collecting genres in recent years with online savvy buyers from around the world more than happy to pay top prices for the ‘right’ addition to their collections. Smith’s specialist section within the February antiques sale saw many prices soar way above estimate. Not surprising really - with over seven hundred bidders registered to buy online and over £50,000 worth of commission bids left before the sale even started.
wooden framed aircraft and it crashed to the ground and caught fire. It was suggested that the exaggerated maneuvers were not strictly necessary for the relevant air test! The medal (which featured on the front of the catalogue) was consigned for sale by the pilot’s daughter and estimated at £1200 to £1800. On the sale day it was finally contested by a keen local collector bidding on the phone and an online bidder - who eventually secured it at £2,200.
One of the top prices of the day was paid for a Distinguished Flying Medal awarded to a Coastal Command pilot in WWII for his bravery in Spitfire raids on German shipping. The lot also included a quantity of interesting photo-graphs and ephemera, including letters to his parents describing some of his operations, and notably his pride at being awarded the DFM.
Smith’s next sale is on the 15th May and entries are invited on the 7th, 9th, 14th & 16th April 10am-3pm or by appointment. For further details please visit www. smithsnewent auction. co.uk or telephone 01531 821776.

ඵ Want to see what goes on on the Bowling Green? Pop in on Saturday 11th April when the Green will be open for the first time this season and play will start.
hat a wet and dismal few months it has been, but how much worse for those poor people who lived close enough to the Severn and Avon rivers to see their homes submerged in dirty water, losing so much and facing a long, long clear up. It puts things into perspective, doesn’t it?
ඵ On Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th April it’s the Open Weekend to give anyone and everyone the chance to turn up and experience playing Bowls. There will be players to watch, people to chat to whilst having a drink and something to eat whilst coaches will be on hand to talk you through playing the game and you will be given the chance to be hands on. All you will need are flat soled shoes and everything else will be provided at the Club.
The members of Ledbury Bowling Club, both playing and social, have kept cheerful by gathering for entertainment and conviviality on a number of occasions. Throughout the winter Bingo is held every second Friday in the month with cash prizes. In February we met for a fun Quiz night with a Fish & Chip Supper followed by a lovely selection of puds. Later in the month “The Business” treated us to music to get the feet tapping at The Royal Oak, whilst later in March we watched “Blackball” while munching popcorn and sweeties.
ඵ If those dates seem too far away Friday Nights are where players, social members and those who might be interested can get together in an informal situation to meet, perhaps to play, and definitely to enjoy being part of Ledbury Bowling Club. So come along and see it for yourself.
LOOKING FORWARD ඵ On Friday April 3rd Ledbury Bowling Club with Malvern Lions are running a Casino Night at the Bowls Club when the admittance ticket will be exchanged for £20,000 of “Funny Money” to be used at the tables (this is the only money allowed in play). There will be canapés and munchies, a bar, a raffle and prizes for the people with most “money” left at the end of the evening. Phone or text Tina on 07788825100 for more details.
ALL THE ABOVE EVENTS are dependent on Government guidelines regarding people gathering together during the Coronavirus outbreak. Please contact Tina (01531 249322) or Ledbury Bowling Club website (ledburybowlingclub.yolasite.com) or social media closer in time to the events for the latest advice on whether each event will take place.

Dave was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. He knew that he would inherit a fortune once his elderly father died. Dave wanted two things: - to learn how to invest his inheritance and, - to find a wife to share his fortune.

One evening at an investment meeting, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away. "I may look like just an ordinary man," he said to her, "but in just a few years, my father will die, and I'll inherit 20 million dollars." Impressed, the woman took his business card.

The moral of the story is: women are so much better at estate planning than men . . . !! **********
Never make assumptions!! His request approved, a CNN News photographer quickly called the local airport to charter a flight. He was told a twin-engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport. Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger. He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted "Let's go!"

The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off. Once in the air, the photographer said to the pilot "Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides." "Why?!" asked the pilot. "Because I'm a photographer for CNN." he responded, "I need to get some close-up shots!" The pilot was strangely silent for a moment. Finally he stammered "So, what you're telling me is ... you're NOT my flight instructor ... ?!" 70
