from the editor ... Hello and welcome to the Late Spring edition of The Grapevine.

What we can do is try to help each other wherever we can. The elderly are the hardest hit by this situation so if you would like to do something to help, get in touch with your local Age UK or Community Action group who will tell you what you can do.

I usually like to make this a light-hearted introduction to the magazine, but this month it’s not that easy with the way our lives have been turned upsidedown by the Coronavirus. Everyone has been affected in some way, from schools being closed, to over-70’s having to self-isolate, quite apart from all the unfortunate souls who have contracted this dreadful illness.

For those of you who have businesses that have been affected, whether your business is small or large, there is financial help available to you. Talk to your bank about Business Interruption Loans, and talk to your mortgage lender about a payment holiday. If you have a tax bill that you can’t pay, then talk to HMRC about deferring your payment.

However, this country has faced and overcome crises before, and if we all do our bit, we will overcome this one. This situation won’t last for long, and we all just need to stay strong and weather the storm.

One last thing, as you will see, we haven't included the What's On pages this month, for obvious reasons. However, as soon as things are back to normal they will be back in the magazine, so please keep your contributions coming.

So, follow the advice being given by the authorities, and take sensible precautions and above all, stay calm. I’ve always taken the view that when faced with a situation that can’t be changed or controlled, worrying about it is pointless – simply accept it, and get on with life. That may sound a little trite, but really, what is the point of worrying about something you can’t do anything about?

Until next time, stay happy and healthy.

Colours U

ntil 1704, the rainbow had five colours. Then Sir Isaac Newton added orange and indigo because he liked the mystical properties of the number seven. The first colour ever used in art was red. Ochre was used in cave art 75,000 years ago. Orange takes its name from the fruit which was first cultivated in China 4,500 years ago. They were exported via the Silk Road and went northwest to begin with. The Sanskrit word for orange tree is ‘narrangah’. This became the root word for many languages as the fruit became more popular ‘narang’ in Farsi, ‘naranj’ in Arabic and ‘naranja’ in Spanish. Before the fruit arrived in England, the English word for the colour was ‘geoluread’ (yellow-red) but in the 16th century ‘orange’ took over. In some languages they have a separate word for the colour and

the fruit – in Afrikaans the colour is ‘oranje’ but the fruit is ‘lemeon.’ Yellow has associations with cowardice and since the 8th century it has been the colour of anti-Semitism. The Caliph of Medina ordered Jews and Christians to wear yellow badges because it was the colour of nonbelievers. Edward I of England required Jews to wear yellow patches and Nazi Germany yellow stars. It is the colour of defiance in the form of the yellow ribbon which started with the women’s suffrage movement in Kansas in 1867. Yellow was chosen because the state flower was the sunflower. Green can give images of the natural world but also malign connotations like envy, jealousy, inexperience, illness and poison. A dye called ‘Scheele’s green’ was invented in 1775 and contained large doses of arsenic.

The Ancient Greeks, Chinese, Japanese and Hebrews didn’t have a word for blue. They thought of it as a version of green. The colour consistently comes first in countries where colour preference has been surveyed. In 1856 William Henry Perkin, an 18 year old chemistry student, was told to do an experiment using coal tar to try to find a cure for malaria. He failed but was intrigued by what he had created (a combination of coal aniline and chromic acid). He dipped a cloth in and it came out purple and held the colour. He patented the dye called ‘mauveine’. Until then, purple cloth was prohibitively expensive – the ancients needed to crush 12,000 murex sea snails to get one gram of Tyrian purple.

Oil shortage ... !! A lot of people don't understand how we came to have an oil shortage here in Britain. Well, there's a very simple answer . . . nobody bothered to check the oil, so we just didn't know we were getting low!

Yew Tree Cottage, Box Trees Road, Hockley Heath, Dorridge B94 6EB

And the reason for that is purely geographical. Our oil is located in The North Sea, but all our dipsticks are located in Westminster!!! Any Questions ??? No? Didn't think so!

A thief in Paris planned to steal some paintings from the Louvre.

E: joseph.dimension@icloud.com

After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings, and made it safely to his van. However, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran out of gas. When the judge asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied, "Monsieur, that is the reason I stole the paintings ... I had no Monet ... to buy Degas ... to make the Van Gogh ... I figured I had nothing Toulouse!"

Coronavirus SCAM ALERT unsolicited messages and calls that ask for your personal or financial details. Shopping online: If you’re making a purchase from a company or person you don’t know and trust, carry out some research first, and ask a friend or family member for advice before completing the purchase. If you decide to go ahead with the purchase, use a credit card if you have one, as most major credit card providers insure online purchases.

Fraudsters are exploiting the spread of COVID19 Coronavirus to facilitate various types of fraud and cyber crime. Since February 2020, the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) has identified 21 reports of fraud where Coronavirus was mentioned, with victim losses totalling over £800k. Ten of these reports were made by victims that attempted to purchase protective face masks from fraudulent sellers. Reporting numbers are expected to rise as the virus continues to spread across the world.

For more information on how to shop online safely, please visit: https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/shoponlinesafely Protect your devices from the latest threats: Always install the latest software and app updates to protect your devices from the latest threats. For information on how to update your devices, please visit: https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/securing-yourdevices

Fraudsters are also sending out Coronavirusthemed phishing emails in an attempt to trick people into opening malicious attachments or revealing sensitive personal and financial details. Some of the other tactics we’ve identified from victim reports: Fraudsters purporting to be from research organisations affiliated with the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) contact potential victims over email. They claim to be able to provide the recipient with a list of Coronavirus infected people in their area. In order to access this information, the victim needs to click on a link, which leads to a malicious website, or is asked to make a payment in Bitcoin. Watch out for scam messages: Don’t click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails, and never respond to 20

WE NEED YOUR HELP MORE THAN EVER!

We therefore face a very significant loss of income, over an uncertain amount of time, which through no fault of our own could potentially put the whole Severn Valley Railway’s existence in jeopardy. Which is way we are launching an emergency appeal to our supporters, and the public.

S

evern Valley Railway urgently needs your help. We rely heavily on the regular income from visitors to keep us running but, in light of Government advice in response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, we have found it both necessary and sensible to postpone all our train services and to close the Engine House Visitor Centre, our gift shops and our refreshment rooms until further notice. We have also taken the difficult decision to cancel many events such as our Easter Holiday activities, Spring Steam Gala, Open House Weekend, Spring Diesel Festival and our 50th Anniversary celebrations in May, all of which were predicted to generate vital large scale income to keep the railway running.

Please help us - we now need your urgent and generous support to help us survive. All funds will go to help the Severn Valley Railway through this emergency. To do this please donate through our Charitable Trust by going to: www.svrtrust.org.uk/emergency For taxpayers we can apply for 25% Gift Aid, at no extra cost to you, which makes this a very efficient way of giving. You can also use the following methods, but Gift Aid is not available: t Make a transfer to SVR Charitable Trust: Sort code: 40-26-08, Account number: 91525786.

Without this income the Railway faces a very uncertain future and, although the Government has announced various support measures for businesses, they offer insufficient help to the Severn Valley Railway at present. We, like many other businesses, are not insured for business interruption caused by the pandemic and the only help currently available to us is through Government backed loans (if indeed we qualify), which would put the railway into significant debt and would take many years to pay off.

t Call 01562 757940 for card payments. t Send a cheque to SVR Charitable Trust Ltd, Number One, Comberton Place, Kidderminster, DY10 1QR. Thank you. Your support and understanding are much appreciated. Helen Smith General Manager 22

Eat more, lose weight? Let me explain …

I

was having a conversation with one of our members the other day, who has achieved such incredible results with us since she joined 18 months ago (6 stone lost, fitter, stronger and healthier than she’s ever been) but she’s been struggling to stay focused since Christmas and wanted my help. What with injury, illness and the typical Christmas overindulgence and weight gain, she’s found it hard to get back into full swing as she was prior to Christmas. Maybe you can relate? You’ve not quite found that ‘oomph’ to get you going and it’s all been all stop-start with very little progress made. When talking to this member, we chatted about her goals, her current lifestyle and what is preventing her from getting to where she wants to be. The typical demands such as work, family life and social

Being in a calorie deficit is the ONLY way to lose weight. Every diet that is designed, whether it’s Slimming World, Weight Watchers, Keto, juice diet, soup diet … all have been designed to create a calorie deficit. commitments meant she wasn’t able to train as often as she had previously ,and due to these demands it meant the eating habits she had previously followed to help her achieve such incredible results, had shifted. She started to skip meals because she was so busy and also got it into a mindset that if she eats LESS then she will reach her goal quicker. When it comes to energy balance and losing weight, you need to be in a calorie deficit in order to lose weight, so she had the right mindset (kind of ). 24

There’s no magic behind them, however the issue with most of those is that they’re either too confusing or too restrictive and difficult to adhere to long-term. So when our member said she was skipping meals and consciously chose not to eat a snack or certain food to reduce calorie intake, she was creating a calorie deficit, which in simple terms, meant she would lose weight. But she wasn’t, she was actually gaining weight – and, it’s not that simple! What was actually happening was that she was creating a calorie deficit on some days by skipping meals and not

ruined any progress just because she ate a chocolate bar. These are just a few small tweaks and changes that if she implements, she will begin to see results over the next few weeks. Remember, it’s small, positive changes on a daily basis that lead to sustainable, long-term results. consuming as many calories, but on other days she would overindulge and binge. Due to her being so busy, lack of planning and feeling so hungry because she wasn’t fuelling herself properly, she would come home and just grab whatever was quick and easy to eat/cook – which wasn’t always the best of choices, causing the weight gain and continuing this cycle.

So what did I suggest to help?

likely to binge and overindulge. • Eat MORE nutritious, low calorie high volume foods such as fruit and vegetables to ensure she’s getting plenty of vitamins and minerals within her diet to help with her health and immune system. • Track her calorie intake (according to her personal goal). So on days that she might consume your typical high calorie,

We’re not about the quick-fix, severely restrictive FAD diets that don’t last. We focus on helping our members achieve results that last a lifetime. Health and fitness is a journey and everyone is following a different path on their journey. We understand that it’s not a ‘one size fits all’ and support each member on their own journey to suit their personal goals and lifestyle.

Her daily work/life demands aren’t going to change so we needed to create solutions to work around that. How she can fuel herself properly throughout the day to ensure she’s recovering well and giving herself the right amount of nutrients and energy for success. We actually needed to encourage her to EAT MORE! • Eat MORE protein to keep her feeling fuller for longer and maintaining her muscle mass, which would mean she would be less

If you wouldfoods, like toasjoin us because you are not seeing the results processed long as you desire, even though you have tried various methods, go to she’s within her calorie target, it’s okay, rather than going intothe a self-sabotage fill out application form, and we can arrange to have a call she’s to discuss your goals. mindset and thinking

Practicing Mindfulness for Dogs is Pawfect for Pet Parents

T

he benefits of practicing mindfulness have been well documented for humans but today’s pet parents believe that it could also have a positive effect on their pooches. With the 2020 Petcare Innovation Summit advocating that, ‘the humanisation trend and changing consumer behaviours’ are, ‘ forcing some of the industries’ most seasoned pet brands to diversify their existing portfolio’, millennial dog lovers are reported to be actively pursuing ways to have a more meaningful and emotional connection with their four-legged dependents. The NHS website offers the following explanation about ‘Mindfulness’:

improve overall well-being and mental health, it’s definitely something worth considering for you and your beloved four-legged best friend. Mindfulness is of special interest to local Trustpilot 5* Rated dog sitters, Barking Mad East Worcester, who arrange care for dogs whose owners are away, matching them with carefully chosen host families.

‘Paying more attention to the present moment – to your own thoughts and feelings, and to the world around you – can improve your mental wellbeing. Becoming more aware of the present moment can help us enjoy the world around us more and understand ourselves better.’

Owner/operator Sheila Hughes said: “The reason that the Barking Mad dog sitting service delights customers is all down to the attention we pay to the individual dog’s personality, in particular their likes and dislikes and how we maintain their routine. If owners are advocates of mindfulness for dogs, we can continue with this in their absence. Dogs really do live in the moment with their host families, enjoying all the comforts of a home from home and lots of new walks with exciting scents and sights.”

Most dogs already possess a natural inclination to live in the here and now, making the most of every moment, but this can be further enhanced by taking a more mindful approach to dog care and training. Lisa Mercer, In-house Dog Behaviourist at Barking Mad Dog Care and member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) said: “Taking a more mindful approach to your dog’s training and exercise routine can be hugely beneficial. It’s all about enrichment and letting your dog just “be a dog”. Rather than repetitive retrieving reaching high intensity levels, it is much better to make their walks more enriching and to experience what comes naturally, such setting up some outdoor scent-work games. Fifteen minutes mental stimulation is equal to an hour’s offlead run, and is both highly rewarding and therapeutic for dog and owner.”

Wrap any offcuts and the remaining two-thirds of marzipan in clingfilm and set aside for later. 4. Butter and line the cake tin with a double layer of parchment. 5.

Beat the butter and sugar together until creamy.

TRADITIONAL EASTER TREAT ... 6. Add the eggs, flour, almonds, baking powder, lemon zest, mixed spice and vanilla (all in one go) and mix until well combined.

Bake this classic Easter simnel cake. Top with 11 balls of marzipan (said to represent 11 of Jesus’s disciples, omitting Judas) or decorate with spring flowers.

7. Mix in the cooled soaked dried fruit and fold in the cherries. Serves 12 Preparation time: 30 minues Cooking time: 2 hours

8. Pour half the cake mixture into the tin. Top with the disc of marzipan, then add the remaining cake mixture, and level the top with a spatula.

Ingredients

9. Bake for 2 hours. Check it’s cooked by inserting a skewer to the centre of the cake - if any wet mixture clings to the skewer, return to the oven for another 10 minutes, then check again.

t 250g mixed dried fruit (a mixture of sultanas, currants, raisins and candied mixed peel) t 1 orange, zested and juiced

10. Cool in the tin for 15 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

t 500g marzipan t 250g butter, softened

11. Brush the top of the cake with apricot jam.

t 200g light brown soft sugar

12. Roll out half of the remaining marzipan and use the base of the cake as a template to cut out another disc. Place it on top of the cake and crimp the edges.

t 4 eggs, plus 1 beaten to glaze t 175g plain flour t 100g ground almonds

13. Roll the remaining marzipan into 11 equal-sized balls. Brush the marzipan with beaten egg and arrange the balls of marzipan in a circle on top, around the outside, and brush them with a little egg too.

t 1 tsp baking powder t 1 lemon, zested t 2 tsp mixed spice

14. Put under a hot grill for a minute or two until just starting to caramelise – be very careful as the marzipan will burn easily.

t 1 tsp vanilla extract t 100g glacé cherries, halved t 3 tbsp apricot jam

15. Leave to cool and tie a ribbon around the cake. 29

Wines:

Pick & Mix

I

n these modern times, there are so many different types of wines to choose from. Each to their own and a range of ‘something for all’ - I chose the following: Domaine de Peyssonnie Muscat Sec (Grapes: Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains). From Languedoc -Roussillon, France, this is a very popular, dry, white wine, that pleases many. Another oftenselected white wine is Garille Viognier – Sauvignon Blanc (Grapes: Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier). Again, from the Languedoc-Roussillon region, this dry, white wine is also extremely popular. From the bouquet, on the nose, to the mouthfeel, this is a ‘pleaser’, for so many white wine lovers.

If a rosé is preferred, then Var Les Richoises (Grapes: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault) from Provence, France, does not disappoint. This dry, rosé wine, has much appeal – and the price is right! For a red, my selection goes to Lirac Réserve des Capouliers (Grapes: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvèdre). This production is from the Rhône and often chosen as a very good red wine, adorning dining tables, regularly. A powerful wine, exuding a bouquet of ripe and juicy, red fruits. The mouthfeel continues the enjoyment, with a good finish on the palate. For sparkling wine lovers Bissinger Premium Champagne (Grapes: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay,

Meunier) captures the mood, perfectly, with the balance and perlage adding to the occasion and enjoyment, superbly. A wonderful production, that is favoured for many celebrations, get-togethers and events. Sweeter wines are always popular and Jurançon (Grapes: Gros Manseng, Petit Menseng) from South West France is a regular choice, that pleases a great number of people and is to be found at numerous gatherings. Having very good fruit flavours it is wonderful wine, for this category.Very capable of being enjoyed by themselves, I located this complete selection amongst the excellent range of wines/drinks at a Lidl store. Also, I found very good value, plus advice on food pairings for wines and how to present, to impress. For all details and information, please visit www.lidl.co.uk As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

Lion Cubs meet the Mane Man Once used to their new surroundings, keepers introduced the youngsters to the rest of the pride, including dad, five-year-old Tsavo and his brothers, uncles Jilani and Jengo.

S

even African lion cubs at West Midland Safari Park have had a busy month, exploring their new home and meeting their father for the first time. The two sets of cubs, now at around five months old, recently had their first day out on the safari, in preparation for meeting the guests for the first time on 15th February. Although a bit hesitant at first, within no time, they were chasing each other around, playing with anything they could get their paws on and attempting to climb ‘lion rock’, the large, sculpted vantage point in the centre of their habitat.

34

Head Keeper of Carnivores, Chris Hodgkins, said, “When we introduced the cubs to the rest of the pride, they were very inquisitive and not scared at all. If anything, the adults were more wary of the cubs, purely because they didn’t want to get a ‘telling off’ from mothers, Amber and Scar, for getting too close! The youngsters are proving to be very mischievous and playful, plus they have so much confidence. We’ve watched them chase some of the adults around the safari, pounce on them whilst they’re sleeping, and tug their tails, so they are proving to be a bit of a handful!” He continued, “First, introductions were made to the adults who have encountered cubs before, followed by the rest of the pride and finally to the three big males. The cubs showed no fear at all 34

and ran straight over to Tsavo and his brothers where they were soon seen biting their ears and tails and tugging on their manes. The boys withstand this behaviour for a while, but when they’ve had enough, they let them know with a growl or a forceful pat on the head!” Now the cubs have been introduced to the rest of the pride, they stay together as a group over-night and keepers often find the cubs snuggled up to a different ‘auntie’ or ‘uncle’ in the mornings. The next steps for the cubs are to get them used to a few extra vehicles in the safari, ready for their debut with the public this half term and to celebrate, the Park will be hosting a few extra lion-themed activities. Guests will be able to have a go on the Park’s new ‘Roar-o-Meter’, where they can see if they can roar as loud as a lion. Those who post their attempts on the Park’s

n on first day out on Safari… Facebook page, will be in with the chance of winning a Family Annual Pass to the Safari Park. Additionally, guests will be able to learn some fun facts about lions and see which members of the pride they have spotted out on the safari, by studying a new ID chart. The seven cubs, named Hunter, Hercules, Hernatty, Harabi, Hodge, Havoc and Hira, bring the total number of African lions at the Safari Park to 18. West Midland Safari Park opens daily for the summer season from 15th February. Admission prices are £24 for adults, £20 for children aged 3-15 years and £22 for concessions. Children under the age of three are free. Admission includes a summer Free Return Ticket and discounts of up to 35% are available when booking in advance online. Rides for the adventure Theme Park are charged extra. Further information and a range of VIP experiences, including a tour of the lion house to see the cubs up close and personal, are available from the Park’s website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. Scouting History on Brownsea Island

article & photos by Pamela Green

O

movement had grown into an international organisation. It now has over 40 million Scouts and 10 million Guides worldwide.

n 1st August 1907 twenty boys pitched their tents on Brownsea Island, little realizing how important and far-reaching this event would be. Lord Baden-Powell's experimental camp, based on scouting skills learnt in the army during the Boer War, set the foundations for the Scouting and Guiding movements today.

After the death of Charles van Raalte, his wife Florence stayed on Brownsea until 1925 when it passed to Mary Bonham-Christie. She allowed a Scout camp of 500 people in 1932 to celebrate their silver jubilee, but after that camps were no longer permitted until the National Trust took ownership in 1963. The island was officially re-opened by Lady Baden-Powell and the camp area was cleared and re-opened. In 1967, a commemorative stone was erected near the campsite and today it is still a popular site for enrolments and investitures. The National Trust reopened the original campsite and regular camps began again. Today, Scouts and Guides from around 75 different countries visit the island every year.

The island is now owned by the National Trust. My husband Michael and I found out about it when we were visiting Pool Harbour. When we heard about the history of the island, and of how you could visit the Nature Reserve by ferry we decided to try it. Lord Baden-Powell was famous for his success during the Boer War, using boys to assist the troops during the Siege of Mafeking. He introduced some of the scouting and military skills to young boys back at home. He was keen to hold an experimental camp to test out some of his ideas and when Charles van Raalte invited him to hold it on Brownsea Island he agreed. Lord Baden-Powell valued the outdoors and nature, and planned his eight-day camp to reflect this. The boys were all from mixed backgrounds; the Boys Brigade, in Poole and Bournemouth and some from public schools.

We found daily talks about nature, family trails, even electric buggy tours for the less mobile. Wildlife spotters are told to keep an eye open for the red squirrels, but with 180 scouts on the island that day all the squirrels were in hiding; however we did see lots of different birds especially peacocks which roamed everywhere. Outdoor activities run throughout the year, with archery, den building, and learning to be a ranger for the day.

Soon after his experimental camp, Lord BadenPowell published his book 'Scouting for Boys'. In 1910, and with the help of his sister Agnes, Girl Guiding was launched to meet the increasing demand from girls wanting to join in. By the time Lord Baden-Powell died in 1941, the Scouting

Amongst other good causes, your donations have enabled us to support a ‘Kids Out’ day for disadvantaged children in the local area and a Pershore High School candidate for the Rotary Youth Leaders Award (RYLA).”

And to the following businesses in Pershore and the surrounding area; Adder Bookkeeping Ltd, Angel Hotel, Carlton Smith Projects Ltd, Carrick Travel Ltd, Deer Park Hall. Is Gardening a Competitive Sport?

S

pring is Sprung, the grass is riz … and so have all the weeds! With the welcome return of lighter evenings, and the hint of warmth in the sun on our backs, it is now time to get outside and tackle the garden.

Keep wrists straight When using shears, your wrists should be held in a neutral position, not twisted to the side, and you should never work with your wrists flexed down. Elbows should be kept close to your sides.

So why could gardening be considered a competitive sport, after all, there are no whistles or stop watches involved?

Mind your back! When weeding or planting, avoid sustained or repetitive bending. Bend your knees so as not to strain your back, and use a padded kneeler when possible.

Whilst maybe not a sport, gardening is definitely a physical activity providing a whole body workout, so warming up and looking after yourself is vital.

Keep loads close to your body and never twist with a load. This is especially important when carrying watering cans.

It is very easy to get carried away, pulling too hard against a stubborn root, overstretching to lop a high bough or reach an awkward corner, or simply digging in wet heavy soil, and before you know it, legs, shoulders, elbows, back and neck are all competing to complain the loudest.

Digging Dirt When digging make sure that the handle is the correct length to minimise bending and back strain. Keep your feet close to the head of the spade or fork, and use your legs and body weight, not your upper back and shoulders. Don’t overload shovels, remember, the longer the handle, the heavier it feels!

So here a few hints and tips to prevent your garden getting the better of you. Don’t over reach or over strain Work within your capabilities, and select the right tool for the job, long handles can be a real gamechanger!

Listen to your Body and remember to rest or change tasks regularly Repetitive tasks can lead to strain and injury, so it is important to take a break, or change activity regularly. Step back, relax your posture and stretch as required. If you find you are experiencing discomfort while doing a task, it is definitely time to see if you can find a way to do the job more comfortably, or – stop!

Keep your gardening tools well maintained Just like in the kitchen, blunt edges can cause overstrain, and also slippages, resulting in accidents. Make your equipment do the work for you to reduce your physical effort. Think about your position If working above shoulder height with loppers or secateurs, be aware of your head and neck position. Try not to let your head push forward, jutting the chin, as this will pinch your neck.

Rome wasn’t built in a day! Know your limits and don’t compete against yourself, your plot, or your neighbours! Enjoyment and relaxation is the key to a good day outdoors. 42

Pick Up Your Pen! Dolly Daydream

T

his month’s competition has a woodland feel to it. Think of your own memories of playing in woodland, tree climbing and making dens. Close your eyes and imagine a bluebell wood. Think about colours, sounds and smells. Create a story inspired by a visit to a wood. (You can always borrow a memory from someone else!)

by Pamel Wray

W

hen I was small, my mother told me this sad poem as we sat by the fireside.

My Little Doll

Play the ‘what if’ game – what if you discovered a portal to another world in the roots of a tree. Where might you end up? What happens next?

by Charles Kingsley I once had a sweet little doll, The prettiest doll in the world; Her cheeks were so red and so white, Her hair so charmingly curled. But I lost my poor little doll, As I played on the heath one day; I cried for more than a week, But I never could find where she lay.

Think about the number of fairy-tales that happen in woods and forests – ‘Little Red Riding Hood,’ ‘The Three Bears’ and ‘Hansel and Gretel.’ Create a modern version of one of these. Write a story of about 250 words. Use the senses as much as you can – colours, sounds, smells and textures all help to bring a story to life.

I found my poor little doll, As I played on the heath one day. Folks say she’s terribly changed, For her paint is all washed away, And her arms trodden off by the cows, And her hair not the least bit curled: Yet for old sake’s sake she’s still, The prettiest doll in the world.

Send your entries to me at sue.r.johnson@outlook. com by Saturday 2nd May. I will award a small prize to the winning entry..

Sue Johnson www.writers-toolkit.co.uk Our winner this month is Pamela Wray. A small prize is on its way to her. Many congratulations also to Bernie Martin, Rachel Duke and Cat Williams who were shortlisted.

I didn’t have a pretty china doll like the one in the poem – a doll I longed to have. It was wartime, and being a war-baby, I only had homemade ragdolls. The thought of losing such a ‘treasure’ – then finding her broken – played on my young mind. I drew ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures of the doomed doll and imagined taking her to a dolls’ hospital where she was made whole again.

Grapevine Publications Editor, Betty-Ann Ambury, has decided to award an annual prize for the best ‘Pick Up Your Pen’ story. The award for the best story in 2019 goes to Rosemary Prosser for her story ‘The Reluctant Angel' which was published in the Early Spring issue. (Rosemary – can you please get in touch with Grapevine Publications details on page 6 - to claim your prize).

The poem inspired an early interest in healthcare. I bandaged and tended all my ragdolls and dreamed of becoming a doctor one day. And I remember the joy and fulfilment I felt when I qualified as a plastic surgeon and healed the scars of trauma.

Dave was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. He knew that he would inherit a fortune once his elderly father died. Dave wanted two things: - to learn how to invest his inheritance and, - to find a wife to share his fortune.

Oxygen Road Traffic Accident Being the creator/author of Winnie the Pooh John Cleese Elton John J K Rowling Metronome Jaws Red and Black Real Madrid

One evening at an investment meeting, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away. "I may look like just an ordinary man," he said to her, "but in just a few years, my father will die, and I'll inherit 20 million dollars." Impressed, the woman took his business card.

The moral of the story is: women are so much better at estate planning than men . . . !! **********

Never make assumptions!! His request approved, a CNN News photographer quickly called the local airport to charter a flight. He was told a twin-engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport. Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger. He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted "Let's go!"

The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off. Once in the air, the photographer said to the pilot "Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides." "Why?!" asked the pilot. "Because I'm a photographer for CNN." he responded, "I need to get some close-up shots!" The pilot was strangely silent for a moment. Finally he stammered "So, what you're telling me is ... you're NOT my flight instructor ... ?!" 46
