Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy
of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the towns and villages in and around the Evesham
& Pershore area and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and wish you all the very best for the year to come. For my part, I'm extremely disappointed that we again didn't have a white Christmas - that's the main reason I came to live in England! In fact, apart from a couple of slightly colder days, the weather has been very mild this winter. Let's hope I'm not tempting providence, and it stays that way. On to this month's magazine. As always we have plenty of good reading for you, as well as all our regular advertisers, and one or two new ones. One of this month's articles is from the West Mercia Police, on ways to protect yourself from cyber crime - it's worth reading, even if you are an experienced 'surfer'. If you need to shed those "Christmas" kilos, then have a word with Brett at Tonic, and if you work from home and would like a new office, then Red Garden Rooms would be the people to talk to.

s we welcome in the New Year after the festive period we begin to make plans for the year ahead. Many of our pets will have joined in the Christmas activities and may well have put on a kilogram or two after a few extra Christmas treats! Now is a good time to think about our pet’s weight with regards to their health, and to get an accurate weight for them, so that if we need to consider changing our routine with regards to exercise, feeding and treats, then we can discuss together the best way forward to help make our pets as healthy and happy as possible. At the surgery we have accurate weighing scales for dogs, cats and small pets of all shapes and sizes, including scales which are set out on the table and walk on scales for our larger canine friends. Why not bring your pet into the surgery to see one of our helpful nurses or vets for a weight check?

February Fair Maids F
or the Romans and Celts, February marked the start of spring. The Celtic name for the 1st February is Imbolc which means ‘in the belly’ and relates to the pregnancy of ewes. It is also known as St Brigid’s Day when unmarried women created a corn dolly known as a Brideog, decorated with ribbons, baubles, shells and stones, to encourage fertility and good fortune. Snowdrops are the flower associated with St Brigid and are also known as February Fair Maids and Candlemas Bells. Their Latin name is Galanthus which means ‘milk flower.’ They are said to be a sign of hope, showing that winter does give place to spring. In the Christian church, the
2nd February is the festival of Candlemas, commemorating the purification of Mary forty days after the birth of Jesus and his presentation at the Temple. The year’s supply of candles for the church are blessed at this time. St Valentine’s Day is an important day – especially for florists! It is also the time when birds choose their mates – and an old wives’ tale says that if a woman sees a sparrow on St Valentine’s Day she will marry a poor man and be happy. If she sees a robin she will marry a sailor and seeing a goldfinch indicates she will marry a rich man. February is also the month affected by Leap Years, gaining an extra day every four years. The Leap Year was introduced
by Julius Caesar. Under his rule, February had 30 days, while August had 29. July – named after Julius Caesar – had 31 days. When Caesar Augustus became Emperor, he wanted his month to be as long as his predecessor’s and stole the additional days from February. It is believed that the tradition for a woman to propose to the man of her choice on 29th February was made possible because the day had no legal status. The next Leap Year doesn’t occur until 2020 – so ladies if you’ve found someone you really like, don’t wait until then before popping the question. Be brave and do it now!

Fundraising Success For Safari Park . . .
S
taff at West Midland Safari Park are celebrating and feeling extremely pleased, after handing over a significant amount of cash to a number of charities they fundraised for in 2016. Over £14,000 was raised by staff and guests onsite, through competitions, donations and VIP experiences. Some funds even came from supporters online, who donated to the Just Giving pages from the comfort of their own sofa. Park staff, especially the animal keepers, made it their mission to raise as much as they could and were put through their paces in a variety of sponsored events, such as swimming, cycling and even rock climbing.
16
Every year since 2014, the Park’s Wildlife Team choose four conservation charities and a special week is set aside in the Park’s busy calendar to focus solely on each charity. This is alongside the Park’s support for the Namibian Wildlife Conservation Trust, whom they fundraise for throughout the year. Last year, a fifth conservation week was added during May half term to support Save the Rhino International. The arrival of a southern white rhino calf in March, along with the ever increasing threat of poaching in the wild, made rhino conservation the focal point for year-long fundraising and awareness. Josephine Gibson from Save the Rhino International said, “Thank you West Midland Safari Park and all your visitors for raising a fantastic £4,939.68 in 2016 to protect critically endangered black rhinos in Namibia with Save the Rhino International. We really appreciate the amazing support
from all the staff and visitors who have helped fundraise by donating, buying rhino gifts, participating in money-can’t-buy rhino experiences and attending a rhino conservation talk at the Park.” She continued, “The unique population of desert-adapted black rhinos in Namibia is under threat of poaching for their horn. Recently rhino poaching has spread from South Africa into neighbouring Namibia and Zimbabwe, and 1,338 rhinos were illegally killed by poachers across Africa in 2015. We really appreciate West Midland Safari Park’s support for the rangers who are working hard to protect black rhinos in Namibia.” Research and Conservation Officer, Katie McDonald said, “We have a duty to contribute to the conservation of the species we care for at the Safari Park, especially those which are threatened with extinction in the wild. Therefore last year we supported; The Marine Conservation Society, Grevy’s Zebra Trust, 21st Century Tiger,

With the continuing support of our guests and friends on social media, I am confident we will meet more ambitious targets this year.” West Midland Safari Park is now in its winter season and is open on weekends only. Special Offers from the Best Butchers in Pershore!!
Dear All
A
lthough a little late, we wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year and hope that you enjoyed a pleasant festive season. We’ve been overwhelmed with compliments on our Christmas fayre, and we were delighted to hear your Christmas success stories and how much your guests enjoyed our products. Last month we celebrated our first birthday on the high street! We had a wonderful first year at No. 10 with overwhelming support from all of you, and with the Carnival, Plum Festival, Christmas Light Switch-On and many more happy events, we are thrilled to have such wonderful customers. A huge thank you from all at Abbey Butcher’s. February finds many of us watching our waistlines, so we have a range of options to help you eat healthily in an enjoyable way. Consider our chicken breasts, ready to grill and flavoured with fiery Argentinian or zesty Mediterranean glaze. What about some of our leaner options, such as local wild venison steaks: lean, low in fat and extremely flavourful. Our sin-free sausages are completely fat free - yes you read that right – completely fat free! Our deli counter stocks a wide range of hot lunch options, as well as our traditional colds meats and cheeses for salads and sandwiches. Each week we have: hot pork rolls, jacket potatoes with a variety of fillings, home-made stew to take away, and a range of soups, or try a bacon and egg bap for a treat. With the cold weather we all look forward to something warm and comforting at the end of a
18
day. It’s hard to beat the delicious aroma of a slow cooked supper and our personal favourites are shin of beef cooked with ale, diced lamb with apricots and pomegranate, pork with chestnuts and cranberries or a pot-roast brisket of beef. February is the month of St Valentine and romance, and our classic matured steaks are a sure-fire way into your loved one’s heart. There’s little as romantic as sharing a dish so what about surprising them with something different … like a show-stopping rack of lamb. Did you know there is a dish called a Venison Valentine? It’s a traditional option where we cut a loin of venison into heartshaped steaks … what could be more romantic?

Best Exercise EVER!
W
ait! Don’t just skim down to see which exercise I’ve labelled as the best, get the whole story … I’m often approached and asked to pin down a single exercise as the one that will help lose the most fat and tone the quickest. That’s not an easy question to answer. You see, I’m very aware of the fact that though an exercise may be perfect for Sally, it may not be the best choice for Bob — hence my hesitation to label any exercise as the universal best. That being said, some exercises are definitely better than others. And, yes, there are even a few that I would call the best. What makes an exercise the best? When you decide which exercises to include in your routine, it is important to consider the type of movement involved. The simpler the movement, the fewer calories 20
you’ll burn and the fewer muscles you will strengthen. On the other hand, the more complex the movement, the more calories you will burn and the more muscles you will strengthen. To put it simply, exercises that use complex movements will deliver better results than exercises that use only simple movements. Complex movements recruit multiple muscles, some to stabilise and others to perform the movement. This process keeps your heart rate higher than a simple exercise would, giving you a more intense workout. What is a complex movement? A complex movement is a multijoint movement that recruits large portions of the body to complete the exercise. Let’s compare a simple movement leg exercise with a complex movement leg exercise: The leg extension machine uses
a simple, isolated movement to work the quadriceps. You’re in a seated position moving only your knee joint. There isn’t much involvement, if any, from other muscles and it doesn’t burn very many calories. Now let’s look at a free weight walking lunge. You start by standing with your feet together and a dumbbell in each hand at your sides (or a barbell across your shoulders, or a medicine ball held at your chest, or even with no weight at all). You take a large step forward and lower your back knee, keeping your front knee at a 90 degree angle. Now you push off your front foot and pull your back leg forward, repeating the movement. How many muscles did you utilise while performing the lunge? Probably too many to count. You certainly worked your quadriceps, gluteus, hamstrings, calves, abdominals, supporting muscles in your shoulders, arms

and back - just to name a few. You also raised your heart rate and really kicked your metabolism into high gear. That’s what I call a great exercise. Other ways to increase intensity Using complex movements are just one of many ways to kick your workout intensity up a notch. Try incorporating a Super Set into your routine. To do so simply perform two or more exercises in a row and then take a short rest. Or how about a Compound Set? Perform one exercise, rest, then perform an exercise with opposing body parts. To find exercises that compliment one another, choose ones that have similar but opposite motions such as a chest press and a row. The key to finding the best exercise is to find the ones that bring your workout intensity to a whole new level. I’d be short-changing you if I named any exercise as the best. The fact of the matter is that it is a combination of changing your workouts up, using interval training, and even some good old cardio that will ultimately see you to your goal. These methods will help you to burn more calories, increase your metabolic rate, and will stimulate the production of more fat burning and muscle toning hormones. Of course, there is more involved to achieving your fitness goals. You need to incorporate fat burning into your routine. You need to consistently challenge yourself during workouts. You need to take control of your eating habits and to get your diet dialled in. So what’s the best exercise for you? Under the influence . . . ? On a recent routine patrol near a local pub, a police officer noticed a man leaving the pub so intoxicated that he could barely walk. The man stumbled around the car park lot for a few minutes, while the officer watched quietly. After what seemed like an eternity, and having tried his keys on five different vehicles, the man finally managed to find his own car, which he promptly fell into. He sat there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons left the pub and drove off. Finally, he started the car, switched the wipers on and off (it was a dry night), flicked the hazard lights on and off, tooted the horn and eventually switched on the lights. He drove the car forward a few inches, reversed a little, and then remained stationary for a few more minutes, as more patrons left in their cars. At last, he pulled out of the car park and started to drive slowly down the road. The policeman, having waited patiently all this time, now started up his patrol car, put on the flashing lights and promptly pulled the man over. He then carried out a breathalyser test, but to his amazement the breathalyser showed no sign that the man had consumed any alcohol at all! Dumbfounded the officer said, “I’ll have to ask you to accompany me to the station sir – this breathalyser equipment is obviously broken.” To which the man replied, “I doubt it officer, because tonight, I’m the designated decoy . . . !”

Casanova G
iacomo Girolamo Casanova was an 18th century adventurer and writer. Born 2nd April 1725, in Venice, Italy, he lived for 73 years. Casanova entered the university of Padua at just twelve years old, graduating at seventeen, with a degree in law. Casanova had numerous encounters with females during his life. He also reportedly became a spy. Casanova searched for fortune constantly, along with his insatiable desire for love and lust. Casanova Prosecco is passionate in its desire to continue and extend the personality and charm of the legendary Casanova, with each bottle being an ultimate perfection of quality and art. The winery was founded during the middle of the 20th century and is one of the largest in Valdobbiadene. Casanova Prosecco is produced by traditional Italian methods, using Glera grapes. Their resulting sparkling wines are award-winning, of premium quality, with exceptional style and presentation. Casanova Prosecco Brut (DOC) and Casanova Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Extra Dry (DOCG) have splendid fruit bouquets. The superb, fresh mouthfeel and palates follow, continuing through to smooth finishes. These extremely popular productions grace many dining occasions, regularly. The Henriette Cuvée, by Casanova, has a following of devotees. A fruity nose, plus an elegantly-dry mouthfeel and palate sensation, ensure the popularity of this production. Casanova Rosé Cuvée Prestige Extra Dry appeals, with its pale rose colour and

very pleasant bouquet of delicate fruits. The flavours and elegance make it a regular selection for events. Casanova Rosé Cuvée Prestige Limited Edition also has a bouquet of delicate fruits. Another elegant production. Widely appreciated and often chosen for weddings and functions, this grandly-presented premium wine, in a white-coloured bottle, surpasses all expectations. Presentations can include Swarovski crystals for newly-weds. These productions pair extremely well with fish, seafoods and white meats, etc. They are also wonderful for apéritifs, as well as making for some magnificent cocktails, too. Each has a fine, persistent perlage and characteristic aroma. Complementing accessories – eg. Matching bottle stopper, cooler, ice bucket and elegant flutes, with logo, etc. - are all available, also. y name is Brett, and I am a qualified personal trainer with 15 years’ experience. During this time I have helped clients from all walks of life, from the “I’ve never done any exercise before” client to the sports enthusiast. My favourite quote is “3 months from now you will thank yourself ”. Amazing things can happen to a person’s body in 3 months. I have helped clients lose up to 25kilos in as little as 8 weeks. I transform people’s body shape; work on alleviating pain; understanding the way your body works, and its ability to achieve your goals, whatever they may be. Good nutrition is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. You will need the right balance of Fitness and Nutrition to achieve your goals. Pre workout nutrition is necessary for good performance; post workout nutrition is necessary for progress. Health and fitness has always been my passion and I have learnt so much from working alongside other professionals within the industry. No two people are the same – not only are clients challenged but I challenge myself to exceed my own expectations. With a black belt in karate I love incorporating the principles of martial arts into my training sessions. In addition to weight loss and strength training, flexibility and free movement is as important to see changes in your health and well-being. It is my aim that all of my clients, regardless of fitness level, leaves each session feeling positive, stronger and believing in themselves.

A Winter Wonderland article and photos by Pamela Green
H
ave you ever wondered what makes the magnificent hoarfrost so different from the ordinary frosty mornings? It is when the air is damp, the humidity in super saturated air is greater than 100% and the formation of the hoarfrost is similar to formation of dew ... with a difference that the temperature is 00C. Dewdrops are frozen into ice crystals to form a white deposit on every exposed surface, when the air is cold and moist. The hoarfrost seems to creep over everything, depositing crystals on all objects exposed to free air. It will form on the tips of leaves and grasses spreading over the entire plant. Interlocking ice crystals become attached to the trees, leaves and hedgerows, turning them into a beautiful winter wonderland. I think the most magical sight is 28
the frozen cobwebs. They are so delicate and yet so perfect. I suppose that after living in the extreme heat for so many years, I really appreciate the difference in our seasons. I will always remember my first winter back in England and my delight when I woke early one morning to find that there was a hoarfrost. I raced to dress warmly, donned my boots, grabbed my camera and braced myself as I opened the front door to the cold. My breath puffed out clouds of smoke as I made my way to my favourite place - the old bridge over the river Wye in Hereford. I crossed the bridge and walked down the towpath beside the river to find everything covered in ghostly white. The leaves looked so different and crumbled at my touch. Blades of grass had spikes that resembled pine needles. Everything was covered in tiny
white crystals and looked as if they were frozen in time and so ghostly. Baby ducks were skating on the ice at the side of the river; everything was so perfect. I had to take my photos quickly as my fingers and hands were hurting too much. But, the hoarfrost can kill or damage some plants whereas other vegetation can even benefit from it. In the olden days hoar meant grey, as in grey hair or old. It is quite interesting to find out why and how it happens and what the consequences are, but to a photographer it is a blessing, offering opportunities not often experienced. The hoarfrost is a beautiful form of ice that makes just about anything it covers photogenic. It is captivating, freezing cold, and eerie, but I wouldn't miss it for the world.

#Be Cyber Smart W
arwickshire Police and West Mercia Police have launched the #Be Cyber Smart campaign to raise awareness of internet-related crime and to give people the knowledge they need to stay safe online. 'The Virtual World Has Real Life Consequences', #Be Cyber Smart encourages people to think about how they behave on the internet and raises awareness of what they can do to protect themselves against online crime. Internet Dating? #Be Cyber Smart Don't let your heart rule your head. Stop and think before you fall head over heels. How well do you really know the person you are forming a relationship with? Are they who they say they are? Are they really looking for love or do they have pound signs in their eyes? Are the pictures they send you believable? Are they asking you lots of questions but keeping tight-lipped about themselves? Have they quickly started using pet names or endearing terms? Do they want to swiftly move their communication with you away from the website or chat room and instead to instant messaging and text messages? Are they asking for money? Don't fall for 'hard luck' stories. 32
3) Use a Credit Card Still talking about payments, remember that you have more chance of getting your money back in the event of problems if you pay by credit card rather than debit card. Some sellers may charge a premium, but it could well be worth the extra for your peace of mind.

The idea is that you won't remember the purchase, and call your bank. However, the fraudster stays on the line, and tricks you into revealing your financial details. If this happens, hang up, don't call back, but report it to Action Fraud. 12) Check Bank Statements Check your bank and credit card accounts regularly for irregular or unauthorised transactions. If you spot any entries you don't recognise, contact your bank without delay. Make sure your bank has your up-to-date contact details so they can alert you if they spot anything unusual. If you wish to sign up to these new services please visit our West Mercia Police website and click on the Registry button in the top right hand corner of the screen. Before Christmas I bought two squirrel baffles - essentially upside down plastic bowls that attach to the feeder poles. The bowls can also be hung with a feeder underneath it. I’ve been wanting to hang feeders from trees in the garden for a while and the orchard seemed a perfect place to start. The trees provide cover and, I hoped, would attract shyer birds. I set to work. Filled the feeder, and marched off to the orchard to find a suitable branch, but finding the right one was easier said than done, especially when you are only 5ft 1in
36
tall, and possibly rather too old to be teetering on ladders. I needed another method. A rope, flung over a thick branch far enough away from the trunk to prevent the squirrels jumping on to it. It works a treat. The feeder and squirrel baffle hang from the rope which allows me to pull it up and down for re-filling. Within moments the feeder was covered in four species of tit, a robin and a woodpecker. And with squirrels defeated, (so far) I call that a success.
afternoon on Christmas Eve, I was wrapping presents upstairs. Glancing out of the window, there it was, the buzzard sitting in the pear tree watching. What? I tiptoed to the window to see. Was it waiting to make an unsuspecting pheasant its lunch? There were none to be seen. All at once the buzzard dropped to the ground by the feeder and began picking something from the grass. Suet pellets dropped by the smaller birds maybe?
My pear tree, the one that seems to have no purpose other than to feed the muntjac on windfalls, entertain the lurcher and provide blossom for the bees - actually that all seems pretty useful doesn’t it? - has now got another use: it’s become a favourite perch for a buzzard. Amazing when you realise how close to the house it is. Late
For several days the buzzard returned, behaving in exactly the same way, and I was none the wiser. Then, looking at the photographs I’d taken I’m fairly sure I’d found the answer. Was that the remains of an earthworm protruding from the side of its beak? Photos and article by Geraldine Holbourn

January is now with us, the winter has set in and it’s a good time to prune your roses. The aim is to remove damage and reduce height. Roses do not have a great root stock and the winter weather can cause damage with wind rocking the roots.
Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
FEBRUARY
Rose Pruning
T
hank you to everyone who emailed and called me over pruning apple trees article featured in November’s issue. I am pleased it has pointed you in the right direction. Don’t forget, you have until February for apple trees to be pruned. This is also the same with roses, so do not worry, you have not missed the boat and, as promised, here is some advice.

First of all, you are looking to take out what I was taught are the three D’s. These are: dead, diseased or damaged wood (as cleanly as possible). If you’re unsure if the wood is dead, a simple way is to gently scratch the bark and if it is not green underneath then it is dead. This method can be followed from the top of a suspected stem all the way down to the base. Once the three D’s are cut out, they and all their leaves should be removed and burnt as they could contain disease such as ‘black spot’ or ‘rust’ that you do not want carrying onto next year’s growth. When pruning a stem, cut just above a leaf bud, cutting away from the bud so any rainwater runs away from the new bud. As a rough guide, a rose needs to be cut back to five buds from where this year’s growth started. It can then be reduced again in March back to the strongest looking bud. Following January’s pruning I would recommend a

winter wash spray (a number of products are on the market) to help keep disease down to a minimum. I would not recommend feeding because, if there are a few weeks where the winter weather is good, you don’t want the plant to put on new growth that is then going to be damaged by frosts. However, mulching around the base of the plant with either horse manure or leaf mulch will help to protect the roots. When to spray or not to spray . . . that is the question Spraying roses is always best done to prevent diseases. If you have spent all this effort keeping them free of ‘black spot’ etc. then it would be a real shame to lose out through not catching diseases early. I spray my roses with a rose spray (many on the market) as soon as the buds start to burst, not only the rose but anything within a few feet of the plant as some spores i.e. ‘black spot’ are spread by
rain droplets splashing spores from leaf to leaf or plant to plant. This way the rose can build up its immune system, so spray every 14 days if you can. Next time, to cheer us all up from the cold dark winter months, I will look at adding colour into your garden to add interest as well as making your garden seem larger than it really is.
If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. When conservation and wildlife adviser John Clarke put a small and unobtrusive advertisement in a selection of parish magazines, the response was remarkable . . . John's book is a tribute to the Spotted Flycatcher and may well help to halt its decline. He is The Flycatcher Man.
This fascinating little book has proved to be very popular and would make an ideal gift for any bird-watching enthusiast.

Pershore WI Centenary
L
ast year was a special time for Pershore WI as we were the first group in the Worcestershire Federation to celebrate our 100th birthday. We certainly did this in style! Our celebrations culminated with a special service on November 20th at Pershore Abbey, followed by tea and cakes in St Andrew's Hall. The following day we had our centenary lunch at The Angel, the original venue for our WI. A plaque to celebrate our centenary is now on the wall at the entrance. With the help of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and with the guidance of Jenni Waugh, independent archivist, and Professor Maggie Andrews we were able to take up various research projects looking at the history of our WI. There were many highlights throughout the year. These included a cookery demonstration of WW1 recipes at Eckington Manor Cookery School, and a stall at Tiddesley Wood Open Day. Here visitors
enjoyed free tasting of cakes made following WW1 recipes, and we gave away seed potatoes as that had been part of the WI's war effort. A couple of members did some research into the history of the members of the first committee. Having discovered where the various members lived, they devised a walk to look at these houses, ending at The Angel where we enjoyed Pimms and nibbles. Inevitably we made jam - lots of it! A hundred jars were on display at the Mayor's Coffee Morning in December which celebrated the end of the Heritage Project. Having had such a busy and successful year we are now looking forward to the future, and hope to welcome lots of new members in 2017. We meet on the second Thursday of the month at Wulstan Hall, Priest Lane at 7.30pm. There is an interesting line up of speakers booked and a cup of tea and cakes is always on the menu. We look forward to welcoming you!
