Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy
of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the towns and villages in and around the Evesham
& Pershore area and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

June is the official start of summer, so let's hope someone tells the weather so we can look forward to some sunshine and summer activities! And July of course is plum season, with Pershore Plum Festival running all through the month - have a look at the centre pages for details of what you can look forward to. Also in July, the Animals R Magic event in aid of the Cinnamon Trust is on at Jinney Ring in Bromsgrove - a great day out for the family, especially if you are an animal lover. Something new for this month, is Marisa Knight and her children's book The Continuing Adventures of Montgomery and Dartington - have a look at page 16 to read all about how she came to write this delightful story. With summer on the way, there are plenty of events and activities to suit everyone, such as the Bishampton Fete, Pinvin School events and Port Street Fayre, as well as our usual selection on the What's On pages. And that's it for this month. Next month I shall be in Malta enjoying the sunshine and wonderful seafood! See you again in August.

Crowning Glory T
he word ‘wig’ first appeared in the English language in about 1675 but their use pre-dated this by thousands of years. They are known to have been used by Ancient Egyptians in about 4000 BC. At that time, there was no attempt to simulate real hair. Assorted sizes of braids were set with beeswax. The popularity of wigs in the seventeenth century began when the French King Louis XIV started to lose his hair. He hired forty-eight wig makers to sort the problem. King Charles II also took to wearing a wig when his hair began to turn grey. Wigs became an indication of social status and occupation – they were made of human hair, horse and goat hair, and also cotton and silk fibres attached to a fabric backing. Men’s wigs were usually white, women’s were often pastel
colours – pink, violet and blue. Some of these were very elaborate and included decorations like ornamental birds. It was said that some ladies had to sleep propped up in order not to disturb their hairstyle. There were also reports of mice nesting in them! In about 1715 the fashion for powdering with starch or Cyprus powder began, leading to special rooms being created. The person wore a dressing gown and covered their face with a cone of thick paper while the procedure took place. Wigs were also perfumed with orange or lavender. Wigs (known as ‘perukes’ from the Italian word for hairdresser ‘parrucchiere’) remained popular because they were practical. Head lice were common and almost impossible to get rid of. Heads were shaved for the wigs to fit, so the lice
infested them instead. The wigs could then be sent to the wigmaker to be boiled and cleaned. Stealing wigs in the 18th century wasn’t uncommon – a full wig was very expensive. One way of doing this was for a small boy to be carried covered over in a butcher’s tray by a tall man. The boy would reach out and grab the wig. When the astonished owner looked around, an accomplice would step forward to ‘help’ enabling the thief to get away. The use of wigs in France stopped during the Revolution. Their usage in England declined after William Pitt levied a tax on hair powder in 1795. Many people substituted flour – but before much time had gone by, short, natural hair became the new fashion.

The award is split up into different selection stages through which the candidates are filtered down; this year, there was a record number of nominations in the first stage. Those who get past the initial selection into the top sixty then complete their own application by answering a few simple questions. From these sixty, thirty were chosen to take part in a selection event in Somerset. This is a fantastic opportunity to have a go at different team challenges such as strategy tests and presentations. Candidates on the course also had the chance to begin an ILM Level 3 qualification in Leadership and Management. The final selection was made by CVQO staff after the thirty potential candidates had handed in their completed ILM.
Funeral Directors
The top ten candidates were then selected for the opportunity of a lifetime. On Thursday 29th June the finalists have been invited to a ceremony at the House of Lords where one person will be selected as the overall winner of the Duke of Westminster Award 2017. Each cadet can take two family members and a representative from their cadet unit.

The Continuing Adventures of Montgomery & Dartington
M
arisa Knight, author of children’s book The Continuing Adventures of Montgomery & Dartington, was born in Warwickshire, where her parents worked for the National Trust at Charlecote Park. They were fortunate to live in the house alongside some of the original Fairfax Lucy family - her mother used to cook breakfast for Sir Montgomery - and as a child, Marisa had fond feelings for the name Montgomery. The family then moved to Elmley Castle in Worcestershire, where Marisa went to school. After attending Evesham College she moved away from home and went to live in Bromsgrove. Sometime later she moved to Devon, and it was here that she the discovered the Dartington Crystal Factory. This company name later inspired the name of one of the cats in her stories. Marisa was married in Plymouth, and started a family there, but she later moved back to the Evesham area to care for her parents. In separating her daughter from the seaside, she appeased her by promising her two kittens when they moved, and in due course Mulder and Scully – named after the after the TV series about two FBI investigators (loved by her husband) - joined the family.
The names really suited the two inquisitive cats, and Marisa often thought it would make a fun project to write a story about them … one day! So here we are: The Continuing Adventures of Montgomery & Dartington has now been published. The story, aimed at 5 – 8 year olds, is set in West London, and features the adventures around the capital city of the two
main characters. The book encourages discussion on subjects such as sibling rivalry, making and keeping friends, bullying, and staying safe. It can be purchased off the shelf, or to order in all bookshops on the high street, or on Amazon for £5.99. The second book in the series will be available in the shops from November.

Bishampton’s Fete takes the Bishcuit!
B
ish Bosh Bash Fete organisers are inviting bakers to come up with an iconic ‘Bishcuit’ made from typical Vale fruits to be crowned ‘Bishcuit Champion’ this year on Saturday, 15th July. The fete, which attracted hundreds last year to pretty 12th century St James Church, is throwing open the competition to all ages, using their own recipe, to find out who can create a confectionary to be proud of. Martin Dickinson, chair of the organizing committee, said: “With the current craze of baking, we thought it would be a bit of fun to have our mini-bake-off event to capture the imagination and put local bakers to the test. If it’s successful we’ll make it an annual feature.” Another added attraction this year will be the results of a painting competition being organised with Church Lench Primary and Flyford Flavel schools. The competition is also is open to all local primary schoolchildren on the theme of ‘Our Village Fete’. (Contact Tim King for information on 01386 462077). This year’s ‘Bash’ will be open from 1-4.30pm (half an hour longer!), and visitors can look forward to an afternoon of fun and frivolity featuring Worcester Concert Brass and Pebworth Morris, providing musical and visual entertainment; a fun dog show, an enviable selection of classic and vintage cars; a wide selection of stalls; and a wealth of children’s entertainment including face painting and a bouncy castle – plus - a Grand Raffle featuring some extremely attractive prizes including afternoon tea at Eckington Manor!

To whet the whistle, there will be the two extremes of barbequed food and ice-cream, as well as the opportunity to try a cornucopia of home-made cakes washed down with an ample supply of tea, coffee and soft drinks. Can you help? The organisers desperately need more volunteers to help put up/put down, and run, the stalls, car parking, and generally ensure the event runs efficiently. So even if you have the odd hour to spare, don’t be ‘bashful’ - please get in touch. We’re also grateful for the loan of gazebos. The Return of a Scavenger
T
here is not much to be said for a northerly air stream. It’s like an icy knife cutting through tender, new, spring growth leaving it brown and shrivelled. These winds desiccate like dry ice, for there is rarely any rain on them and if there is, it is usually sparse. For rain we need the westerlies coming off the Atlantic and, as much as dry days are welcome, by the middle of May I was hoping for a weather change. Even the bees, buzzing one minute, were disappearing the next as the sun disappeared and the icy blast became even icier. Normal nectar sources were slow to appear because of the cold and I’ve been wondering what I can plant that would fill the gap and flower in even the coldest spring. Hellebores came to mind and so I’ve bought many more to fill the woodland garden. As predicted the cleared willow area rewarded me with a stunning
display of bluebells. New vistas have been opened up and new wildlife opportunities created, some more welcome than others: it would appear that muntjac have a taste for Lily of the Valley. Out one afternoon admiring the bluebells a noise like a jet fighter made me look skywards. As I did, a peregrine falcon sped out of its stoop like a rocket before easing up. What a sight! I was excited as a child at Christmas. How many people are lucky enough to have that happen in their garden? And it was to get better a few days later when I was outside discussing with a friend how best I might shelter my shrubs. The North easterlies were taking their toll, but the solution is not straightforward and we came down to either planting a hedge and spoiling the sweeping view to the new orchard, or putting up temporary, unsightly screening. As we were pondering this problem, my attention was caught by a large bird sweeping over the top hedge and gliding towards us: a red kite, its distinctive forked tail being used as a rudder as it twisted and turned above us, so low I felt that if I reached up I could almost tickle its stomach.
Red kites were once welcomed in Tudor London, for as scavengers they helped clean the streets of carrion and rotting food, but since then they have reached near extinction. Subject to one of the world’s longest running protection programmes they have been successfully re-introduced to England and Wales. They are becoming more common in the Ledbury area and over the Malverns as they expand their territory. Look out for them: they truly are a magnificently graceful bird. Vale Chiropractic
Meet Doctor of Chiropractic, Emily Freeman Many people ask me why I became a Chiropractor . . .
M
y interest in chiropractic stemmed from my love of horses. I can’t recall exactly when I first had my horse checked by an Equine Chiropractor but I became fascinated by what a difference it made. Riding “Blue” (my horse) felt so much smoother, more comfortable and he felt so much more responsive. He seemed much happier in himself, more relaxed and his appetite improved. Blue used to suffer from an occasional state of mild lethargy which seemed to have altogether vanished after a number of treatments. Chiropractic treatment was obviously doing him a great deal of good. This experience ignited a passion and interest in Chiropractic in me. I wondered about the difference it had made for Blue and how it could do the same thing for people and other animals. So, rather than go to University to study one of the many usual choices, I opted for a more vocational direction and studied to become a Doctor of Chiropractic. I started Vale Chiropractic with a simple objective: to stop people from thinking it is normal for them to live with pain or think their pain is insignificant. As a Chiropractor, I am here to help you better understand why you are in pain and how you and I can work together to help you to get rid of the pain you are suffering from. Chiropractic care can help with many different conditions. Pain and discomfort in the form of back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain, to name a few. I can also offer other treatments to complement Chiropractic care. Soft tissue release and
kinesiology taping can also help to further address pain and discomfort of the back, neck and shoulders, muscular aches, sports injuries, arthritic pain, migraines and general pain and discomfort in joints. Vale Chiropractic is based at The Vale Golf and Country Club at The Lodge with free parking.

Three Essential Snacking Tips A
big part of eating for fat loss is keeping your metabolism going all day long with small, sensible meals and snacks. In theory, this is simple and easy: eat a little something every 2-3 hours throughout the day. Unfortunately very few people do it right, resulting in frustrating weight gain. The content of your snacks and small meals is of utmost importance. If you’re eating the wrong thing every 2-3 hours then it’s easy to gain weight quickly, rather than what you want, which is to drop fat and clothes sizes. Let’s jump into the 3 Essential Snacking Tips that I have for you today to keep you on track and burning fat all day long… Snacking Tip #1: Watch out for added sugar Sugar is the biggest problem when it comes to fattening snacks, and so this needs to be the number one nutrient that you check. Your frequent snacks should contain very little, or zero, added sugars. This is a pet peeve that I have: many ‘health’ foods have massive amounts of added sugars, which will destroy your results. Items like protein bars, jerky, dried fruit, green juice, and trail mix often have added sugars and preservatives that you need to watch out for and avoid.
Your snacks should have little to zero added sugars, and should be a nice blend of protein, fibre and complex carbohydrates. Snacking Tip #2: Check the serving size When your snack comes in a package, after you make sure that it isn’t filled with sugar, check the serving size. It’s a popular technique for food manufacturers to give the nutritional facts for 2 or even 2.5 servings, on an item that you will likely polish off the entire package. If the servings are more than just one then you’ll need to do some quick math. Calculate the total calories, sugar, carbs, fat and protein. Make sure that the numbers line up with your target nutrition sums. Always be aware of how many servings you are eating in a single sitting. Do the math if you’re eating more than one serving – be honest with yourself! Snacking Tip #3: Homemade and made-in-nature are best As convenient as packaged health snacks are, you will always see better results by eating whole foods found in nature, or snacks that you’ve made at home with real food ingredients. Even the healthiest packaged protein bar from the store is going to contain preservatives and additives that are completely avoided in homemade foods.

A handful of raw nuts, a piece of fruit with fresh nut butter, a hard boiled egg, some chicken breast on veggies or chopped flank steak on a salad are all better options than any packaged snack. When possible, stick with whole foods found in nature and snacks and meals that you make at home. Are you participating in a consistent, challenging exercise programme? "Oh," said the pirate, "One day we were at sea, and a flock of birds flew over. I looked up, and one of them pooped in my eye."
"You're kidding," said the bartender. "You couldn't lose an eye just from a little bird poop" "Well you see," said the pirate, "it was my first day with the hook . . ." **********

The man said to the dentist, "Doc, I'm in one heck of a hurry. I have two buddies sitting out in my car waiting for us to go play golf, so forget about the anaesthetic, I don't have time for the gums to get numb. I just want you to pull the tooth, and be done with it! We have a 10am tee time at the best golf course in town and it's 9:30am already . . . I don't have time to wait for the anaesthetic to work!”

New Companion ... cat or kitten?
E
very year at Evesham Cats Protection hundred cats and kittens are handed over to us to find new homes. There are various reasons for this: sometimes people are no longer able to keep them due to moving house, change in financial circumstances or a female cat hasn't been neutered and has produced a litter of unwanted kittens. The majority of cats come in as strays; they've either been abandoned or find themselves without a home through no fault of their own, and are quite often in poor condition. One unusual instance was when a mother cat and three kittens were seen crossing the road at the Twyford round-about. They were later found and caught in a garden at Greenhill. Once the cats are handed over to us they are then given any veterinary treatment necessary, lots of 'TLC', and once they are ready to go to go to a new home, they are available for viewing. If you are a first time cat owner and considering having a cat or kitten then it is important to do a bit of research to determine what sort of cat would suit your lifestyle. Then it is time to pay us at visit at Evesham Cats Protection; we are very fortunate to have a centre where the cats can be easily viewed. It can be quite overwhelming and sometimes difficult to decide on
the right cat, when there are so many to choose from. However all the healthy cats in our care find a new home. Volunteers get to know the cats purrsonality and are happy to talk to you about each of them and their specific characters and traits. Prospective owners are welcome to spend time with all the cats and have return visits too. It is important that you get the right cat, as it can be distressing if the cat has to be returned. It can also be tempting to take a kitten as they are cute and playful, but they also need extra care and work, needing regular meals and playtime throughout the day. An adult cat however, is usually more settled, but often overlooked when it's kitten season. Once a new cat has been decided on, there is some paperwork to complete, and the cat will then be reserved in your name. It is suggested you then make preparations at home: ensure that the house is cat friendly, that there is a space specifically for your new cat's bed, toys, food and water bowls, and a litter tray. Any new cat needs to be kept indoors for at least two weeks, giving them time

to establish their new indoor territory before venturing outside. Our adoption fee is ÂŁ45. Once this has been paid and adoption agreement paperwork is completed, the cat is ready to go to their new home. This can be an exciting time but it is important the cat is left to settle in and find it's own way around. If you feel the cat is not settling or is unhappy then please contact Evesham Cats Protection for advice. This is a very brief overview of the adoption process and each homing is individual - more information about adopting can be found on our website www.eveshamcpl.org.

WINES FROM:
Lebanon website and use of the latest technology, there is much interest at www.chateaumusar.com Massaya, another producer of excellent Lebanese wines, has also collected awards. The sophistication of the Massaya wines, I feel, captures the techniques to produce superb wines, with knowhow and experience being built over many years.
April Two Programme Lebanese brothers have paired the terroir with two French winemaking dynasties and the results are really wonderful.
L
ebanon produces excellent wines, from its location at the eastern end of the Mediterranean The wine making here can be traced back for thousands of years, with vines being cultivated in the Bekaa Valley for over 6000 years. Today, the superb wines from Lebanon can be enjoyed in the UK and worldwide. The Hochar family has been in Lebanon since the 12th century. The winery is situated in an 18th century castle at Ghazir, where the wines can be aged for years. Their vineyards are located in the Bekaa Valley, and, following hand-picking of the grapes, the fruits are transported to Ghazir. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Carignan, Obaideh and Merwah, are some of the varieties used, along with knowledge, skills, dedication and love, to create perfect wines.
The award-winning Chateau Musar wines, from the Hochar family, are outstanding. Aged for up to two years, in Nevers Oak, prior to bottling, and being stored in cellars for at least five further years, are more reasons why the Chateau Musar wines are most excellent. I found their reds to be full-bodied, with a really deep ruby-like colour and intense flavours. These suited my palate perfectly and are great with roasted meats and Mediterranean dishes. The rosé and white wines are superb also, being wonderful accompaniments to seafood, etc. The most acceptable Musar Jeune is a more recent introduction and features youthful, vibrant, unoaked productions, still adhering to the Hochar family's philosophy of making natural wines. With the Chateau Musar interactive
I found whites, rosés and classic reds, to be aromatic and flavoursome. The Silver Selection, and the Gold Reserve, using Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre and Syrah grape varieties have superb flavours and, being long on the palate, I would describe as powerful productions. The Massaya winery is situated between the mountains and the Mediterranean and their wines are well-worth locating, when serching for wines from the Bekaa Valley. www.massaya.com These are just two of the wine producers of Lebanon. I look forward to finding more Lebanese productions, in the future.
As always, Enjoy!

A splash of colour can be achieved in practical ways too: for example, repainting your shed from brown to a light grey will lighten up that area of the garden.
Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
BRIGHTENING UP
areas of the garden
Early Flowers Now that we are coming into summer, there is already quite a lot of colour around, which makes planting for colour much easier. At the beginning of the year it is always worth trying to find something like a hemerocallis, or an early-flowering rhododendron, or even a magnolia, to give a splash of colour. If you can plant in a place in the garden that has a backdrop, this will enhance the colour, for example: a white magnolia against a conifer
hedge will make it stand out stronger than if it was in a bed with a lot of other things where it could get slightly lost. Autumn Transitioning to Winter During autumn time, colour can be gained quite easily with something like an acer - the sugar stored in the leaves over the summer months changes the leaf colour in autumn from green to a variety of golden yellows through to deep reds, depending on which variety you pick.
Obviously you need to be very mindful of what to paint: for instance, if you have a shed that is in an area that you use as a utility space, you really don’t want to highlight where you store all the wheel barrows or garden equipment. We have recently constructed a few pergolas, painted different colours, which will additionally enhance climbers such as roses that are deciduous (lose their leaves). So even in their dormant state, you will have a colourful wooden framework that will provide additional colour to that part of your garden, even in winter. Sculptures These can provide added impact to a garden. You can get very bright, modern sculptures made of glass, etc., that reflect light and move light around the garden, thereby adding interest and sometimes movement. Bringing Light into Dark Areas If you are looking at brightening up a

something to consider when seeking more impact – opposites attract. For example, if you throw a very dark green together with a white shrub, placing the white shrub in front of it, or the silver stem of a silver birch, this can easily enhance an area and really draws your eye down towards it, since it virtually “jumps out at you”.
the area where it is to be planted, and will have sufficient space to fill out or grow to the correct height, etc.
Additionally, reflecting light into dark areas, certainly with a mirror, will give the illusion of the garden being larger than it is, creating the effect of there being another room beyond, ‘more of a window than a mirror’, and it will throw a lot more light into a darker area.
Research If I can give you one tip, it is research before buying the plant you are drawn to choose. For example, if you are choosing a silver birch, there are some silver birches with very white stems, such as Betula utilis jacquemontii 'Snow Queen', which are very bright.
• Pinch out any plants putting on large amount of growth, such as forsythia.
Colour Coordination Colour combinations are also
You also want to ensure that the plant you are choosing is suitable for
darker area, this can be done quite simply. Nowadays you can get safety mirrors which are made of a plastic compound, but look like real mirrors. If you place these in very dark corners they will reflect light back out.
Garden tasks for June. • Most planting should be done, but do not forget to keep hoeing to keep weeds down as plants start to fill out. • Water wisely as these next few months there could be water shortages. So use water from water butts first.
• Keep greenhouse doors open to help with ventilation. • Dead head flowers on plants like roses to keep them flowering. • Support large flowering plants like peonies. • Aerate lawns with a garden fork.

The Magic of Steam A
fter spending most of my adult life living in cities around the world, moving to a village in the country was quite exciting. There are so many beautiful sights to see and I wanted to explore them all. One Sunday afternoon my husband Michael, and I, watched the magnificent sight of an old steam train as it chugged across the countryside pulling carriages full of people. The passengers waved as the train whistled. I watched in awe, and wondered where it had come from, and what was it’s destination. We settled down to village life and I joined a ladies group called Chatterbox, where I made friends and went on excursions. Eventually Chatterbox ladies went on a day trip on a steam train and I just had to go along. As we boarded our train at Toddington, we were informed that our engine was the 7820 Dinmore Manor, that had been restored by volunteers in 1995. Our ladies group were privileged to have our own carriage and tea and coffee were served by a very pleasant volunteer guard, and he told us the story of how the railway had been restored. In 1976, volunteers and local people were
permitted to rebuild the line from Broadway to Cheltenham. Volunteers not only restored the line, but also signal boxes and other infrastructure. A new platform was built at Cheltenham, and a new station at Broadway and Toddington. At Toddington booking office you can pick up a free heritage leaflet and visit the locomotive yard. The heritage gift shop sells models, books, and toys, plus leaflets about walks in the local areas. Our train soon arrived at Cheltenham Racecourse where we were allowed to wander around and explore. But soon it was time to board the train and set off on our return journey. We enjoy the most wonderful views of the nearby villages, with outstanding scenery across to the Malvern Hills and beyond. Toddington was the end of our return journey, and where we were treated to a delicious cream tea in the Flag & Whistle cafe. The GWRS volunteers have thought up some brilliant weekend entertainments for the whole family, and these are held throughout the year. 'Wartime in the Cotswolds' is a step back in

Charged Up For Charity . . . family and associated suppliers, Colin has so far raised over £2800. This fantastic sum will go towards helping SRI protect and increase rhino numbers across Africa and Asia.
Whilst the rest of the Park’s staff gear up for May half term’s Rhino Week (a week dedicated to the conservation of rhinos), Colin Mclarty, Electrician at the Park, is recovering from running the London Marathon, all on behalf of raising funds for Save the Rhino International (SRI).
Colin said, “I decided to run the London Marathon for Save the Rhino after receiving an email from the Park’s conservation team, just 12 weeks before the race. Running the London Marathon is a once in a lifetime opportunity and with being able to raise money for a great charity at the same time, I couldn't say no. I followed a 12 week training programme with a short break for a week’s holiday which had been booked previously. This meant I had to train six days a week with a long run on Sundays.”
With only three months training behind him, Colin managed to charge around the whole 26 miles in a fantastic time of 3 hours, 29 minutes and 55 seconds. With the help from generous colleagues, friends,
He continued, “I really didn't expect to raise as much money as I did and I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone again for their support. It's the people that donate that really make the difference. I would also like to

mention that the Save The Rhino team were fantastic, they really made everyone's contribution feel appreciated and they had obviously worked really hard to organise an excellent day and experience for all the runners. Big thanks to Save The Rhino and WMSP for the opportunity!” Not to be outdone, rhino keepers at the Park have a whole host of activities and events planned from 27 May - 4 June, to also raise money for Save the Rhino International. Rhino Week will promote the plight of these magnificent animals and will highlight the work the Park does to aid in the conservation of rhinos around the world. Guests will be able to become a ‘rhino ranger’ and take part in an interactive trail to receive a prize. There will be rhino-themed arts and crafts, the chance to meet ‘Ekozu’ the baby rhino costume character and competitions to win some amazing money-can’tbuy experiences.

Alabama Rot
Alabama Rot & External Parasites with skin lesions and kidney failure remains low (94 confirmed cases across the UK between November 2012 and April 2017.
Over the past few months, there has been a lot of publicity regarding cases of Alabama Rot, including a case diagnosed in Malvern. The disease itself is still very poorly understood in the UK, although there are suspicions that the trigger factor is in the environment. At present there is not enough evidence available to advise against walking in specific areas. Alabama Rot only affects dogs and at present there is no evidence that it is contagious from dog to dog. It is thought that dogs which are affected by the condition start off with unexplained skin lesions (particularly on the paws or legs but also on the body, face, tongue or mouth) which become ulcerated and infected and as the condition progresses it leads to severe kidney failure. It has been suggested that mud should always be washed off the dogs’ legs after a walk – while this seems to be a sensible approach, it is not known whether it is necessary or helps to prevent the disease. Although Alabama Rot can be very serious, the number of dogs affected

External Parasites of Dogs & Cats: Ticks
With the warmer weather upon us this springtime, ticks will become extremely prevalent. Dogs and cats are out more, exploring and hunting in the sunshine; parasites are a problem all year round but mainly they are a problem in the summertime. They are particularly rife in some areas especially where there is rough foliage and bracken.
Ticks act as vectors, in the same way that a mosquito transmits malaria by sucking the blood from a person; the tick does the same to an animal. During the process of attachment and feeding, irritation and localised infection may be seen. Ticks can sometimes carry diseases such as Lyme Disease. Lyme disease is caused by the bite from an infected tick. Animals can be bitten while out walking through wooded areas or parklands in both urban and rural areas. Signs of Lyme Disease includes lameness, fever and just a general feeling of being under the weather and if left untreated, these can lead to more serious conditions, such as kidney disease and heart failure. One of the most efficient ways to prevent ticks on your dog, is with a tablet that provides three months protection. Please contact the surgery for advice if you have any concerns.

Local boy makes a splash for hospice raise funds for a charity very close to his heart. During training he swam up to 50 lengths a week.
A
Worcester schoolboy kept his head above water in a recent challenge for a local charity. Jay Ingram, aged 9 and from Perdiswell, undertook a sponsored swim, raising more than £1000 for St Richard’s Hospice. The Perdiswell Primary School pupil took on the challenge – supported by more than 20 family and friends – on Monday 1 May, swimming 1 mile – or 64 lengths – in 1 hour and 14 minutes. A seasoned fundraiser, Jay previously raised £500 for a sponsored silence in 2015 and £900 for a sponsored walk last year, all in aid of St Richard’s Hospice. Jay’s support of the hospice came about following the care his aunt, Mel Baker received before her death in 2014. The sponsored swim took place at Perdiswell Leisure Centre; prior to the opening of the new centre, Jay found swimming a struggle and decided he wanted to challenge himself as well as
Jay’s mum, Sabrina Ingram, swam alongside him on the day. Sabrina said : “Words can’t express how proud we are of Jay. He is such a caring and kindhearted boy. He pushed himself the whole way and has really gone the extra mile! We are also overwhelmed with the support Jay has received. This is our way of thanking St Richard’s for the care Mel received.” Jay said : “I am really proud of my swim and the time I did it in. It was a challenge and I really had to push myself from length 50, but with my Mummy pushing along the way and cheers from family and friends, I did it! Thank you to everyone who supported me, both with donations and cheering me on the day. I look forward to thinking about my challenge next year!” Jodi Brandwood, Fundraiser at St Richard’s Hospice, said : “We are absolutely thrilled with the amazing effort from Jay on his sponsored swim! He is a very special young boy and we would like to thank everyone who has sponsored him, which, in turn, helps us care for others at the end of their lives. We look forward to supporting him in future initiatives. Well done Jay!”
St Richard’s Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with life-limiting illnesses and supports their loved ones. Each year the hospice team supports over 2,500 patients and family members in Worcestershire. The hospice strives to provide the best medical, practical, emotional and social support we can to help people live life to the fullest, as independently as they can, for as long as they can. St Richard’s is an independent charity and is grateful for all donations to help it continue its work. Find out more at www. strichards.org.uk.
