Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy

of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the towns and villages in and around the Evesham

& Pershore area and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

This month we again have a few new advertisers, and welcome back a couple of 'oldies'. Of the new advertisers, I would particularly like to welcome Alison Blears of RW Blears Solicitors as this is one service that up until now, we have not been able to offer our readers. West Midland Safari Park have a new addition to the family, and although this is not the first baby of its kind to be born at the park, he is still well worth going to see. WMSP also have a new dinosaur in their dinosaur park. I recently visited the park and despite having seen most of the animals in their natural habitat, I was still very impressed by everything I saw - and I especially enjoyed the dinosaur park! Cats Protection once again have a lovely little lady who desperately needs a new and loving home. For some reason - probably related to old superstitions it is more difficult to find homes for black/black and white cats than for others. Having owned several black, and black and white cats, I can say from personal experience that they are just as loving, affectionate and fun as any other cat. So do go along and meet Polly - she could be your new best friend. That's all for this time - keep happy and healthy, and don't forget Mother's Day!

Inheritance Tax and the Family Home T

his April sees the introduction of a new Inheritance Tax relief giving a potentially valuable tax break to families. It arguably creates a potential £1 million nil rate band by the 2020/2021 tax year for families where both parents are married or in a civil partnership. By way of background, Inheritance Tax (IHT) is charged on the value of a person’s assets on death at the rate of 40% over £325,000 (the Nil Rate Band (NRB)). Married couples and civil partners each have their own NRB which when combined on the second death can in effect give a NRB of £650,000 where the first spouse to die leaves their entire estate to the survivor. There is no tax to pay on the first death if the estate passes to the surviving spouse because of spouse exemption no matter how large the estate is. Additionally, for some people there may be valuable business or agricultural reliefs.

freezing of the NRB in recent years and ever increasing property values with the family home often being by far the most valuable asset. This may to a large extent be eased by the new Main Residence Relief being phased in from this year. It will apply in addition to the NRB and other reliefs and exemptions when a main residence is passed on to direct descendants (children, grandchildren, adopted and stepchildren). The allowance will rise from £100,000 to £175,000 by April 2020 ((£350,000 for a married couple) so together with the existing £650,000 joint NRB may give a NRB for spouses with children of £1million. For estates worth more than £2m there will be a reduced relief available.

as to how fair the new relief is. There is also considerable doubt if it will apply where property is held in some types of trust. This new tax relief and the others I have specifically mentioned are valuable but can be complex and without care can be lost. I shall be pleased to discuss the implications for your estate and assist in making a tax efficient Will for the benefit of your family or chosen beneficiaries. Please note this brief article on a complex topic is for guidance only and your individual situation and requirements must be considered before acting on the content this article. Article by Alison Blears

There are safeguards for people who may have downsized or sold their home to go into care for example. There is however no equivalent provision for those whose assets do not comprise their own home or who do not have children or do not Notwithstanding those reliefs, wish to benefit their children. As many estates still remain taxable as a result of a combination of the such there has been much criticism 12 To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: betty@grapevinepublications.co.uk

ADVICE Shed Security Tips The first aspect of protecting your shed is to fit a good quality lock. There are a range of sturdy padlocks, pad bolts, hasps and staples available on the market but make sure you get one that is appropriate to the strength of your shed door and frame. Remember that any opening windows on your shed will also require a good quality lock.

items in your shed. Property marking makes your belongings much less attractive to thieves as they realise that the goods can easily be identified as stolen and traced back to the original owner. There are many ways to mark property; including engraving, UV marking and forensically coded systems such as SmartWater.

In addition to a lock, you may wish to consider fitting an alarm on your shed. There are three types of alarm system that could be used:

• An alarm within the padlock itself, which sounds if the lock is forced open or tampered with. These systems can be purchased from most DIY stores and locksmiths. Also consider using a property marking system to protect the 14

The last question was, 'Name seven advantages of Mother's Milk.' The question was worth 70 points or none at all. One student, in particular, was hard put to think of seven advantages. However, after pondering the question for some time, he wrote: 1. It is perfect formula for the child. 2. It provides immunity against several diseases. 3. It is always the right temperature. 4. It is inexpensive. 5. It bonds the child to mother, and vice versa. 6. It is always available as needed. And then the student was stuck. Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang indicating the end of the test, he wrote: 7. It comes in two attractive containers and it's high enough off the ground where the cat can't get it. He got an A! 

The Vicar's False Teeth The Vicar goes to the dentist for a set of false teeth. The first Sunday after he gets his new teeth, his sermon is short and he talks for only eight minutes. The second Sunday, again his sermon is short, and he talks for only ten minutes. The following Sunday, he talks for 2 hours and 48 minutes! The congregation has to mob him to get him down from the pulpit. They ask him what happened. The Vicar explains: the first Sunday his gums hurt so badly he couldn't talk for more than eight minutes. The second Sunday his gums still hurt, so he could only talk for about ten minutes. But, the third Sunday, he put his wife’s teeth in by mistake and he couldn't shut up . . . !

Pretty Polly

P

retty Polly has been waiting at Evesham Cats Protection for a new home longer than many of the other cats that were in our care and have now gone to new homes. Polly was found with her three kittens - pictured below - at a local plant nursery. She was well cared for there, where she bought up her kittens, but Christmas was near and the nursery was closing for the holidays. Luckily the kittens were easily contained. Polly however, wasn't that keen on co-operating, but with some food she was tempted. After a few weeks of ‘TLC’, and a trip to the vets for all of them to have their vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, and where Polly was spayed, they were all ready for homing. Of course all the cute kittens found homes very quickly, but Polly has been overlooked due to her colour – as mentioned in a previous article, black/ black and white cats are often passed over by potential new owners in favour of other coloured cats. Polly has a very friendly nature and would quickly settle into a cat friendly home, so if you are considering ‘adopting’ a new companion please come and meet Polly – you’ll be glad that you did. Sadly we are asked to take in many cats and kittens from similar situations like Polly's. Having both male and female cats neutered will reduce the numbers of homeless kittens. People on low incomes can apply for a voucher from the rescue centre to have their cats neutered. It is kinder to neuter, and will help keep cats happier and healthier. Please phone 01386 833343 for more information. Another appeal is for voluntary help with fundraising events. Hopefully with thoughts of spring coming soon, there will be many village fetes and events to attend, where we can raise awareness of the essential work done by Evesham Cats Protection, as well as raising much needed funds.

If you have a few hours to spare during the spring and summer weekends and are interested in joining our fundraising team, please phone 01386 833343 and leave your details for Fran.

pring is at last drawing near, and whilst we welcome the warmer weather and lighter evenings, this season can present new challenges to our pets. Fleas and Ticks External parasites can be found on pets all year round, but we do tend to see a surge of cases at the onset of spring. Flea bites can cause skin irritation, and once in the home require rigorous effort to be rid of them! Ticks are known to cause irritation at the site of their bite, and in some cases can transmit serious disease. You can ensure your pet is protected by using one of the recommended products dispensed from the surgery – be sure to visit us and chat to one of our vets or nurses about which product is best for your pet. Tulip Mania T

he history of the tulip is filled with intrigue, skulduggery, thieving, instant fortunes and broken hearts. The word ‘tulip’ originates from the Persian word ‘DULBAND’ - meaning turban – probably inspired by the shape of the expanded flower. They were cultivated in the Ottoman Empire (modern day Turkey) as early as 1000 AD and imported into Holland in the sixteenth century. By the mid seventeenth century they had become so popular that they created the first economic bubble known as Tulip Mania or ‘tulipomania.’ They first became popular when the Flemish botanist Carolus Clusius joined the University of Leiden and established botanical gardens. He found that tulip bulbs tolerated the harsher conditions of the Low Countries. In 1623 the sum of 12,000 guilders – more than the value of

a large house in Amsterdam – was offered to try and tempt one connoisseur into parting with ten of the prized and extremely rare Semper Augustus tulip bulbs. The owner refused to sell. The much-prized variegated colour of the Semper Augustus flowers was caused by a virus that beautified but also eventually weakened and killed the bulb. It is now known that this ‘mosaic’ or ‘tulip breaking’ virus was spread by aphids that flourished on the fruit trees in seventeenth century gardens. By 1633, a single bulb was worth 5,500 guilders and this had increased to 10,000 by late 1636 to early 1637. Frenzied trading took place, often in smoky tavern backrooms. Some bulbs changed hands ten times in one day. At the peak of tulipomania, single bulbs sold for more than ten times the annual income of a skilled craftsman. Mirrors were set up by wealthy people in their

gardens to make it look as if they had a more impressive number of tulips than they actually possessed. The watercolour paintings created at that time were done as a form of advertising – a bit like plant catalogues now – so that people could see what the flowers looked like. Special vases were designed, many of them in the blue and white Delft pottery, with each opening holding a single flower. However, in February 1637 the market collapsed. By then most speculators couldn’t afford even the cheapest bulbs. Demand disappeared overnight and financial catastrophe set in. (author's note: If this article has been of interest, you might enjoy ‘Tulip Fever’ – a novel by Deborah Moggach that has now been made into a film.)

Newborn Baby Giraffe is Ambas

rare Rothschild’s giraffe has been born at West Midland Safari Park - the third baby welcomed into the herd in just six months. The six-foot-tall baby boy arrived on the evening of 14th January to first time mum, five year old Arusha. He joins playmates, Embu and Emali, who were born in August and September 2016. Rothschild’s giraffe are currently listed as

‘endangered’ by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). With numbers dropping at an alarming rate annually, giraffes as a whole are facing a “silent extinction," as reported by Dr. Julian Fennessy, co-chair of the IUCN and Director of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF). The GCF concentrates solely on working towards a sustainable future for all giraffe populations in the wild. Their hard work and dedication has been recognised by the wildlife team at the Safari Park, as they’ve decided to name the baby ‘Fennessy’ in honour of the founders and

directors of this brilliant charity. Dr. Julian Fennessy said, “We are elated to have a baby giraffe named after our family. The kids are super excited and hope it has a bright and prosperous future as an ambassador for all giraffe in the wild. We really appreciate the great partnership we have with West Midland Safari Park and other zoos around the world. “These partnerships are important for us to get the giraffe conservation message out there. Together we can save giraffe in Africa before it is too late. Join us at the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) and stick

ssador for Conservation    your neck out for giraffe!” Head Keeper of Ungulates at the Park, Lisa Watkins said, “To help us keep track of our animals births, each year is allocated a letter and so in 2017 all our babies’ names will begin with the letter F. We couldn’t think of anything more fitting than naming our new baby ‘Fennessy’ to honour the important work done by GCF.” She continued, “It’s not an ideal time of year for an African animal to come into the world, however we are able to keep our giraffe house lovely and warm using our biomass boiler heating system. Although Arusha is a first time mum she is taking it all

in her stride and has picked up some tips from watching Bwindi and Akacia looking after their calves. We can tell how much Embu and Emali have grown now by looking at our new little arrival.” Fennessy joins West Midland Safari Park’s herd of giraffes, bringing their numbers up to ten. Guests will be able to see the herd on the four-mile drivethrough safari, either out and about or in their yard, weather permitting. To learn more about the plight of wild giraffes, make a donation or adopt a giraffe, visit the GCF website: www. giraffeconservation.org.

The giraffes can be seen in West Midland Safari Park’s four-mile, self-drive safari, included in the standard admission charge of £23.00 for adults, £18.00 for children aged 3-15 and £21.00 for concessions. Admission includes a voucher for a return ticket or safari gift. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra. Further information and tickets are available from the Park’s website www. wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. n Tuesday 31st January, Pershore High School won the district netball tournament, competing against Bredon Hill (A and B), De Montfort, St Edwin’s and a second Pershore High team. Our team performed really well considering this is our first season playing together. The conditions did not work in our favour as it rained throughout the matches making it more difficult for all the teams to play their best. There was really good defending by Emily, Gab, Jaz, Lily and Zoe, and some amazing shooting from Charlotte and Liv scoring a total of 24 goals between them supported in attack by Paige and Darcy. This was a great start to our season and we all hope the rest of the season goes as well as this. The Pershore B team also performed excellently and played some closely fought games and showed great determination and team-spirit. write up by Darcy Bridge (Team Captain)

Start with Motivation Why do you want to get fit again? There must be a reason that you desire to change your body at this time in your life. Think about it until you have a very clear, very specific reason. There is no wrong answer here. We all have our own personal motivators for wanting to achieve our best selves. What’s ultimately important is that your reason is specific and powerful to you. Once you’ve determined what your motivation is, write it down where you can see it every day. Think about it. Focus on it. Don’t ever let go of it. Work on Education You need to eat right and workout smart in order to quickly achieve your goal body. Do you know how to do this? Are you sure?

TIME TO WINE:

F

rance is renowned for producing many excellent products, which are exported, globally. French cuisine is very popular and the wines of France, that include champagnes and rosés, are regularly selected to grace many dining occasions, complementing cuisine and to enjoy on their own. Numerous awards are constantly received by French winemakers, that include both large production companies and smaller, family producers, too. Champagne Dumangin produces very impressive champagnes. Founded in 1884, the fifth generation now continues to astound. A great believer in uniqueness, Gilles Dumangin is a highly-respected grower in

Chigny-les-Roses. Blanc De Blancs Premium Single Vineyard Extra-Brut is an excellent production. Presented in an elegant, frosted white bottle, this premier Cru Cuvée is very popular and regularly enjoyed on special dining occasions and at numerous events. Extra-Brut Premier Cru Le Vintage is, again, impressively well-structured. Perfect to accompany numerous dishes of cuisine and has a good number of followers. L’ExtraBrut Premier Cru is a further exceptional champagne. This very dry production is much soughtafter and has many champagne connoisseur devotees. These are just a selection from their splendid range and all have a wonderful mouthfeel, plus extended palate sensation. The structure and elegance add to the

France

much-loved enjoyment of these superb champagnes. www.champagne-dumangin.fr Château Guilhem, family estate, has been in wine productions since the latter part of the 19th century and is my choice for organic rosé wines. I searched for very lightly-coloured wines, with just a hint of pink. Pot De Vin has a floral bouquet, that I find most inviting. The mouthfeel is very good, with pleasant notes of fruits, which continue through to the palate sensation. Prestige de Château Guilhem, again, impresses me. This pale-coloured rosé wine is very popular and regularly adorns many dining tables. An excellent mouthfeel follows on after the fruity nose and the palate enjoys extended pleasures of this production, from Languedoc. These wines are subtle in colour and excellent to pair with a lot of cuisine, including salads. Also, they are a great complement to al fresco dining, adding something ‘extra’ to an occasion. www.chateauguilhem.com As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

I

t was the spring of 2013 when I first found a Cowslip growing in our lawn. I remember thinking how lovely it was, and that I hadn’t seen any for many years. I got my trowel and dug the little wild flower out of the lawn and replanted it in my flowerbed. Every year since then one little cowslip grows in my lawn and I move it to the flower bed, and now I have quite a clump of pretty cowslips. I can recall as a child in the springtime, how the cowslips grew in the field near our home, but I haven’t seen them for many years. The hay meadows were once awash with wildflowers and alive with insects, but throughout the 1970s and 1980s many were drained, damaged and destroyed as a result of agricultural intensification. More than 95% of our wildflower meadows have been lost in past, but now, thanks to people who care, the wild sping flowers are making a come back.

closely with farmers and landowners to promote wildlifefriendly practices in these areas. You can help too: just go along and volunteer for your local Wildlife Trust, and feel proud as you watch the flowers bloom again. Over the years the flowers, leaves and roots have been used in many ways. Cowslip wine is said to be a very nice drink and an excellent seditive. The flowers have been used in ointment and the roots in antiwrinkle cream. The oil from the roots is used for rheumatism, and the leaves used in aftersun creams. The cowslip is of the same family as the primrose, or primula and it

is said the name cowslip may have come from the word cow dung, probably because the plant was often found growing amongst the manure in cow pastures. The official species name (veris) means that it is really the Primula (of spring). It smells very much like an apricot and is closely assosiated with folklore and traditions, including garlands for May Day, and being strewn across church paths for weddings. My favourite old folklore names are key of heaven, and fairy cups. Whatever you call them, I find them really beautiful, especially after a drab winter, seeing their yellow heads bobbing in the breeze.

The Wildlife Trusts are now looking after many meadow habitats using traditional methods, such as hay-cutting, reseeding and grazing, for the benefit of local wildlife. They are also working Please mention THE WORCESTERSHIRE GRAPEVINE when responding to advertisers

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Adding Colour to

YOUR GARDEN

T

hank you to those who called to say that the rose pruning tips in last month’s issue helped them. As promised, to cheer us up from the winter blues, this month I am looking at ways to add colour to your garden and how the right colour can make your garden look larger or smaller than it is. Bright colours can always make you feel more cheerful. In a garden this can be achieved in more ways than just using brightly flowering plants. Leaf

40

foliage can give the same effect. For example, Phormiuns are a great family of foliage plants whose colours range from white to red. Deciduous plants (plants that lose their leaves before winter) offer the wonderful autumn range as their leaves change colour. There are even more options, Silver Birch and Cornus for example have coloured stems for winter. Cotoneaster or Sorbus have a variety of coloured berries. When setting out a garden, creating a focal point to draw your eye down the garden - can add interest. If you choose to make your focal point using bright but dark colours such as red, this can make the object come towards you making the garden seem smaller. Use a lighter bright colour such as a pastel shade, then the object will seem further away giving the illusion the space is bigger. This effect can be achieved even without using plants. In some of my designs the illusion can be created with a thick post or sleeper, planted upright and painted. Mirrors can be used to reflect part of a garden to make it look larger. A secret doorway or window suggests there is more of interest beyond. This can work really well in a small space such as a courtyard. Some companies now sell mirrors designed for safe use in gardens. One area that most people overlook when building a garden from scratch is the option of lighting. This too can be used to create illusions and add interest at night time, not merely near the

house but to pick out your garden’s focal points using coloured lighting. For trees, green light looks good. For streams or ponds, a clear light works best. The photo to the right is of our garden entitled “Hansel and Gretel and the gingerbread house” created for a recent Malvern Spring Garden Show. As you can see, the colour of the Silver Birch and the red flowers of the Reddendum stand out above the other planting around it. We used a white variegated Phormium to stand out against the yellow feather-like effect of a Sambucus to give a striking colour without a flower in sight. The use of the lollypops and their different colours draws your eye down towards the house that is actually not that colourful. Adding a pocket of white to the planting picks out those areas I wanted to highlight to the judging panel. Garden Tasks for this month Remember to keep turning your compost and then re- sheet. February/March will be the time to start to use it on your beds. The bulbs you planted in November have started to

come up. I would always recommend taking photos of the area to record and remind you where the bulbs are. You may wish to put a new plant in that area, or add more bulbs the following year. If you have any fencing or wooden structure that need attention, now is the time to act as most plants are dormant and you can get behind them to repair or paint. It is also much easier to see what needs to be done when all herbaceous plants are cut down to ground level. Any replacement work can be done at the same time.

If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. The Cheeseboard 100 Barnard's Green, Malvern, WR14 3ND

01684 891900

Shropshire Blue

by Andrew Brooks

S

hropshire Blue is a blue cheese made from pasteurised cows’ milk and uses vegetable rennet. This cheese has been described as a cross between Stilton and Cheshire. Made in a similar way to Stilton, it is a soft cheese with a sharp, strong flavour and a slightly tangy aroma. It is slightly sour but sharper than Stilton and generally creamier. The orange colour comes from the addition of annatto, a natural food colouring, and penicillium roqueforti produces the veining. The cheese has a deep orange-brown, natural rind and matures for a period of 10 to 12 weeks with a fat content of about 34 per cent. Makes a good change from Stilton, adds colour to any cheeseboard and goes well with a nice fruity red wine.

Some days I amaze myself. Other days, I put my keys in the fridge.

Success at last? I

’m not saying this too loudly incase I tempt fate, so I will whisper the news: I think I’ve finally defeated the squirrels . . . ssssh, they might be listening. In the past I’ve tried all kinds of anti-squirrel devices. I even made a cage that enclosed the entire top section of one of the stations and was annoyed by the smug look on their faces when they’d succeeded in squeezing through the mesh . . . have you ever been laughed at by a squirrel? But you know what they say, ‘He who laughs last, laughs longest.’ You may recall that I fixed a new feeder from an apple tree in the orchard with a squirrel baffle above it. At the same time I purchased two squirrel proof feeders and a put a second baffle on one of the feeding stations. Back in the house I monitored the results. Now it was my turn to be smug as I watched squirrel after squirrel

being thwarted by my new and improved bird feeding scheme. They shinned up the apple tree, ran along the branch and to my surprise didn’t work out how to get on the rope. There was much tail twitching in irritation. Lacking perseverance they gave up, ran down the tree and headed to the next, normally reliable food source. One look at the baffle was enough. ‘Ah’, I could see the squirrels thinking, ‘one more place to go’. And with a cheeky shake of the tail, they headed to the telegraph pole where hangs a feeder filled with suet pellets. They climbed with confidence, but were in for a surprise. Every time they alighted on to the feed port, it snapped shut. Squirrels 0, Geraldine victory! I haven’t seen a squirrel in the garden since. One afternoon I answered the door to a delivery man who stood on the doorstep not speaking for quite a few minutes

before he asked me what the birds were that were singing. They were in the oak tree, silhouetted against the sky and I couldn’t see them clearly so I guessed they were probably a flock of finches or great tits. They were not exactly singing either, it was more a discordant twittering similar to the noise a flock of starlings make. The delivery man smiled, lovely he said, you don’t hear bird song anymore. I was shocked. Where did he live? Then I thought how noisy our towns and cities are and maybe it isn’t possible to hear birds singing in that environment. Although apparently some sing louder to overcome the background noise. A world without birdsong? Unimaginable. Will this be the future when our song birds are in serious decline? I hope not.
