Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy

of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the towns and villages in and around the Evesham

& Pershore area and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Autumn is well and truly with us again – the days are getting shorter, there’s a definite nip in the air and the trees are changing colour … a truly beautiful time of year, as Pamela Green’s article on page 33 describes. Time to get out your winter woollies and stoke up the log fires (if you’re lucky enough to have a real fireplace!). All of which of course means that winter – and Christmas – are not far off now. Christmas markets and events and workshops are starting this month, so have a look for them as you browse through this month’s magazine. But before we get to Christmas, we’ve got bonfire night to look forward to, and there are several firework displays on in the area – have a look at the What’s On page for details. West Mercia Police have some safety tips on bonfires and fireworks, so have a look at these and make sure you have a great time, without any disasters! As always the Cats Protection have “guests” who are in need of permanent homes, and this month we feature three lovely ladies who are all waiting for someone to give them a safe and loving home, with a warm and comfy lap to curl up on.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

LAWN WORK

for the winter

Winter Approaches As winter approaches, most people tend to forget about lawns, but there is still quite a lot of work to do with lawns to prepare them for a healthy start to the new growing year. Aeration Just by sticking a garden fork through the lawn gives it a chance after the summer months where heavy traffic (children, dogs, mowers and gardeners) has crossed over the surface, compacting it, and once this happens it is really hard for any wet weather to make an impression - it can’t soak through, so tends to just sit on the surface. 10

Also, underground the soil is so compact that the roots of the grass find it very difficult to break through the surrounding compacted soil once spring time comes around, so I recommend aeration. You can obtain special machines to do this task, but if you don’t have one just pushing a garden fork into the ground, working round all over the lawn will help to break it up. If you have clay soil that is extremely dense and the holes fill up when you walk over it, you can fill these up with sand, thus creating little weep-holes. Fallen Leaves Leaves do a large amount of damage, and as autumn is upon us make sure that your lawn surface is free of fallen leaves. If left, leaves will block out the light and moisture. Even though the grass may survive underneath, yellowing in the process, the covering of leaves will put a strain on the grass and some of the finer blades of grass will actually die out if left like this for prolonged periods. Moss During the wet weather, moss tends to grow, so a good lawn moss killer and winter feed is recommended, followed by a scarify. This will get any thatch and bits and pieces out, and will give the lawn a bit of a boost before winter, removing as much moss as possible before the wet weather appears, making it less likely to spread. Bald Patches Any bald patches in your lawn - usually caused by

animals or children, or even mowing the lawn too short - can be treated around this time of year with some grass seed before the very cold weather comes, giving it time to germinate. This can also be carried out in the spring if it is too close to the winter. Top Dressing This is where Peat, Lomas and mixture is spread over the lawn. This is good for two reasons: it helps to remove any divots and bumps in the lawn, and it helps where the lawnmower has created ruts. It also builds up the top layer making the soil more fertile, enabling the grass to grow thicker when it grows through this layer. The secret is not to lay this on too thick as this could overpower the grass, block out the light and end up creating bald patches. Lawnmower As your lawnmower will by this time no longer be in use, I recommend now would be the time to get it serviced or at least checked over at a garden machinery establishment to ensure that it is ready for use in the spring. Many people leave this task rather late, and by the time they send it in, they

experience a longer wait for their lawnmower to be repaired, so by the time it is ready for use the grass has already become unmanageable. Therefore, if done at this time of year it is just a case of storing it away, ready for the spring. Mole Hills If you are unlucky enough to have a lot of mole hills (moles are quite rife this year), or worm casts (where the worms come up and leave little holes), or even ant hills in your lawn, now is the time to get them flattened out and rolled so they don’t become a problem for next year. • With mole hills, just remove the tops and make sure that the run is compacted. • With worm casts and ant hills, if the ant hills aren’t very big, a lawnmower or a roller will sort that out. Roll the Lawn Then roll the lawn before you aerate and before you top dress and this will help to keep your lawn as level as possible. Next month I will look at pruning apple trees.

If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. any pets become anxious and frightened when fireworks are going off. Some become extremely distressed and unlike us, they do not understand why there are loud bangs and flashes outside. The signs include: • Trembling or shaking • Clinging to owners • Barking excessively • Cowering and hiding behind furniture • Trying to run away • Soiling the house • Pacing and panting • Refusing to eat The most natural thing for us to do as owners is to comfort and reassure our pets when they are demonstrating fearful behaviours, however, sadly in this situation it can make the problem worse. The best thing we can to help our pets is to be prepared in advance.

he popularity of sparkling wines increases yearly. Always a major part of a celebration or occasion, as well as being enjoyed on their own, sparkling wines offer excellent value and impress, regularly. I searched for a company supplying sparkling wines from different countries and then selected just four, which, to me, offer quality, very good value for money and are widely available. Codorníu Reina Maria Cristina Blanc de Noirs Vintage Reserva Cava Brut (Spain) I found to be superb. Produced in honour of the Regent Queen Maria Cristina of Austria, this production uses Pinot Noir Grapes. A most pleasant bouquet greets the nose and extends pleasures, wonderfully, to the taste buds. Bouvet-Ladubay Saumur Brut NV (France) has Chenin Blanc grapes utilised to great advantage, in this excellent production. A floral and fruity bouquet leads enticingly to the wonderful mouthfeel and palate sensation. This wine is very popular and enjoyed at a great number of events. Famiglia Pasqua Prosecco D.O.C. Treviso Brut (Italy) welcomes with a fruity bouquet. The palate is fresh. This well-balanced production is highlypopular and very suitable for so many occasions, including parties.

14

Graham Beck Brut Rosé NV (South Africa) has Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes from Graham Beck’s own estate vineyards. This colourful wine has a bouquet of light-red fruits and on the mouthfeel delivers a refreshing taste. Great for al fresco dining. I located these productions at the multi awardwinning Majestic Wine Company. Well-renowned for competitive prices and impressive customer service, Majestic Wine has a most excellent range. There are many wines – each to their own – plus beers, spirits and other beverages, available. I found the staff very knowledgeable and always able to advise on food pairings, etc. Majestic Wine has free tastings, with the opportunity, sometimes, to meet winemakers. Also, I consider the discounts on ‘mix and match’ to be really good, providing great value for money. There is free delivery and free glass hire available (if an event is planned, for example), also. Jordon Davis, Ethan Harris, Harry Metcalfe and Alison Sprague started the course in October 2015, learning snorkelling skills in Pershore pool. They progressed to using scuba equipment and had to study for an exam, related to diving safety and technical questions relating to diving depths and pressures. Passing this exam enabled the divers to progress to open water dives in quarries in Cromwell and Chepstow. This photo shows a recent sea-diving trip to Little Haven, Pembrokeshire, where the students dived off the club's RIB, at Stack Rocks, under challenging, low visibility conditions. Big thanks to Evesham Sub-Aqua Club for their great support and training. Anyone else wishing to have a go is welcome to arrange a 'try-dive'. The Azores M

ost people would struggle to place the Azores on a world map. They are a group of nine volcanic islands in the Atlantic, about 900 miles west of Lisbon. They are governed by Portugal and said to be close to the site of the legendary kingdom of Atlantis. However, if you are not familiar with the islands themselves, you may have heard of two famous incidents that happened off their shores. In 1880 Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote a poem called ‘The Revenge: Ballad of the Fleet’ which commemorates the Battle of Flores in 1591. Revenge was on patrol to prevent Spanish ships carrying back treasure from America

when Sir Richard Grenville received a message that a fleet of 53 Spanish ships were approaching. The poem documents the battle which raged for three days. It begins as follows: “At Flores in the Azores Sir Richard Grenville lay And a pinnace, like a flutter’d bird came flying from far away; Spanish ships of war at sea. We have sighted fifty three.” Another Azores claim to fame is the discovery of the Mary Celeste – an American merchant brigantine found empty and drifting off the coast of Santa Maria on 5th December 1872. She was on her way to Genoa, Italy, with a cargo of 1709 barrels of grain alcohol.

The British brig Dei Gratia who found her reported that she was seaworthy and in full sail. The captain, his family and the crew’s personal possessions were undisturbed but there was nobody left on board. Various theories have been put forward as to why they disappeared. These range from waterspouts, seaquakes, attacks by giant squid and paranormal intervention. The story has been recreated countless times in novels, plays and films. The Mary Celeste has become a by-word for unexplained desertion.

Lovely Lonely Ladies ...

I

f you are thinking of adopting a cat then please come and meet these cats needing a home at Evesham Cats Protection centre in Wickhamford. The centre is open seven days a week, with the cats available for viewing from 10am to 3pm. Demelza Demelza, is a cat who would suit a quieter home as sadly she was mistreated before she came to Evesham Cats Protection, however this has not affected her interaction with people and she enjoys attention. She is also something of a rarity, as it is very unusual for a ginger cat to be female, so if you would like a unique companion to love, this beautiful lady is the one for you.

Demelza

Demelza is estimated to be approximately six years old and would like a cosy home to settle in for the rest of her life where she can feel safe. Peggy Peggy is a young cat, approximately two years old. She came in as a stray so nothing is known of her past. Peggy would enjoy a home with a garden that she can explore and a then a comfy sofa to curl up on after her adventures.

Peggy

Tollie Tollie has been waiting the longest for a new home, which is difficult to understand. She has a friendly and affectionate nature, enjoys being with people and other cats and would fit in well in a family home. She has a long haired coat and is approximately four years old. Please note that these cats may have been lucky and gone to a new home, during the time of publication, but there are always plenty of other equally beautiful, friendly and affectionate cats looking for a kind and loving owner. Please also keep a regular check on the website www.evesham cpl.org to see all the available cats for homing.

Free Home Energy & Benefit Checks

P

eople in Herefordshire face multiple challenges and barriers to maintaining their health and well-being, and dealing with fuel poverty. Financial pressures associated with living in rural areas, such as costs for transport and domestic heating, mean some households spend more to achieve the same standards of living as equivalent households living in urban areas. Age UK Hereford & Localities is pleased to announce it will be working with Marches Energy Agency (MEA) to support older people to keep safe and warm by offering two free services From mid October 2016 through to mid May 2017, we will be offering free home energy checks and free benefit checks. Home Energy Checks MEA will be carrying out the home energy checks. The aim is to provide practical energy efficiency information and expert advice to older people. The project will enable older people to change energy use behaviour and benefit from small practical measures which could potentially reduce their energy bills whilst remaining warm and well.

Home energy checks will include: • A thorough assessment of the clients circumstances, usage of energy, hot water system and insulation. • Give basic advice on how to keep warm and save energy. • Supply and install simple energy efficiency measures (draught excluders, letter box brushes, radiator foil, sockets timers and other items). • Help you to apply for Warm Homes Discount and the Priority Services Register. • Review your energy tariff and payment method. Benefit Checks Age UK Hereford & Localities will be offering free benefit checks. Our Information & Advice team will ensure that you are receiving all the benefits to which you are entitled and also review your current benefits, making sure that you are receiving the correct amounts. They will help with benefits such as: Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payments, Carers Allowance, State Pension, Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefit.

Tricky Treats for Safari Park Anima penguins, insects for the meerkats, or meat for the lions.

T

o celebrate the spookiest of seasons, West Midland Safari Park has been treating its furry, feathered and slippery residents with some peculiar pumpkin enrichment. As part of the Park’s month-long Spooky Spectacular festival which started on 1st October, over 1,700 pumpkins were ordered to help theme the Park’s Discovery Trail, African Village and Adventure Theme Park. Any surplus pumpkins are donated to the Wildlife team, who use them as part of the animals’ important enrichment programme — and prove to be very popular indeed. Once a pumpkin has been hollowed out, it can be filled with an animal’s favourite food, whether it be fish for the

26

Some of the animals were more keen about their new play things than others. Amber, the Park’s youngest lioness, snatched the pumpkin up straight away and fiercely guarded it, snarling at anything that dared to come too close! The penguins however, seemed to be very cautious of their new, bright orange visitor and only one or two brave individuals managed to pluck up the courage to waddle warily over and grab a sprat, before turning swiftly on their feet and dashing into the safety of the penguin pool. One group of animals that couldn’t wait to get their claws stuck into their new toys were the mischievous meerkats. Keeper, Michelle Howes, said, “We regularly provide the animals with environmental enrichment and the meerkats really loved the pumpkins. Being naturally inquisitive little creatures, the

pumpkins went down a treat, allowing them to exhibit natural behaviours of foraging, playing and burrowing. As pumpkins are a seasonal treat, they offered lots of new tastes and smells.” She continued, “We really enjoyed watching the meerkats explore their pumpkin tower, searching for the mealworms we had filled each pumpkin with. When they had finally found every last mealworm, we did not let the pumpkins go to waste — we recycled the left overs by giving them to the hippos later in the day.” For some animals, the bright orange spheres didn’t need to be filled with tasty treats to make them interesting. Six- month-old white rhino Ekozu, seemed to take offence to the strange object that appeared in his path and flicked it over with his tiny horn, completing the sequence with a victory dance! Meanwhile in the reptile house, some of the snakes were trying out some of the Halloween

Spooky Spectacular is included in the standard admission charge of £22.00 for adults, £17.00 for children aged 3-15 years and £20.00 for concessions. The Colours of

AUTUMN W

e really are lucky. We live in a country where nature has one last fling before settling down into winter's sleep. Where days shorten and temperatures become crisp. This is the time when the quiet green of the summer foliage is transformed into the vivid autumn palette of reds, oranges, golds, and browns, before the leaves fall off the trees. On special years, the colours are truly breathtaking. I love photography and I must say I really enjoy the colours of autumn leaves. When October arrives and brings with it the magic of autumn my spirits rise. Why autumn leaves change colour and fall is somewhat of a mystery. Many factors contribute, but one simply has to be in awe of the wonders of nature. It is a short period of dramatic transition but oh so breathtakingly beautiful. I just want to go for long walks, take my camera and capture the sumptuous rich colours. All that is normally green has now changed into dazzling kaleidoscope of rich shades of colour. The changing foliage never fails to surprise and delight me. Do you ever wonder how and why a leaf changes colour. It certainly makes you wonder! Leaves are natures food factory, and as roots take water from the earth, the leaves take carbon dioxide from the air. Trees use sunlight, to turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and

article & photographs by Pamela Green

glucose. This is called photosynthesis, and it means putting together with light. A chemical called chlorophyll is what gives plants their green colour. As summer ends and autumn begins the days get shorter, and this is how the trees know they must get ready for winter. The Acers and Maples are my favourites. They have such stark bright red and yellow leaves and they just stand out in the woods. The colours are truly amazing and breathtaking. They make me smile as they show me change is beautiful. When I walk through the woods I find myself taking a deep breath to smell the rich aroma of the trees. I love to hear the crunch of leaves under my feet, and I always remember as a child how I collected and preserved autumn leaves. I recall searching the grass verges for the finest examples. I’d take them home, place them between sheets of waxed paper and proudly show my mother - maple leaves were the easiest to find. The scarlet and gold leaves, transform the beautiful landscape. I don't think I'll ever stop trying to capture these beautiful changes, they’re wonderful!

4 Body Changes from eating

LOW CARB

H

ave you ever stopped to wonder what would happen to your body if you stopped eating refined carbs? It’s no secret that refined and processed carbs contribute to weight gain, and so reducing the amount of these in your diet would logically lead to a leaner, fitter you. But is it true, or is it hype? And is it really worth giving up your carb-a-holic ways? Here’s what really goes down when you give up refined carbs… Body Change 1: You BURN FAT When you stop eating simple carbs your body no longer has readily available calories to burn, and so it clicks over into burning stored fat as energy. This means that your trousers will start feeling looser around your waist and thighs. 36

Body Change 2: You FEEL LESS HUNGRY Fat burns longer and slower than simple carbs and so your energy stores will take longer to deplete. This means that you’ll find yourself skipping that afternoon pick-me-up snack and powering through until mealtime without hunger pains. You’ll also notice that it takes longer to feel hunger in the mornings after waking up, once you’ve cut the simple carbohydrates and refined sugars out of your diet. Body Change 3: You HAVE MORE ENERGY Living on a diet of simple sugars and refined carbohydrates puts your body in a continual energy roller coaster. Right after you eat your energy is high and then, whoosh, an hour later your energy levels crash. All of that changes once you cut out those

simple carbs. The low carb meals that you switch to are filled with nutrient dense foods that sustain your energy levels for hours at a time, saving you from that frustrating roller coaster. Body Change 4: Your STOMACH GETS FLATTER Probably the most coveted of the low carb body changes… once you’ve been off simple carbs for a few weeks your stomach will visibly become flatter. It’s a well-deserved reward and one that will keep you motivated to continue your healthier eating habits. While eating healthy, nutritious meals is awesome, don’t forget that exercise is half of the battle when it comes to getting and staying fit. Call or email me today and we will get you started on the exercise programme that will reshape your body once and for all!

Bonfire Night &

FIREWORK SAFETY

A

s Bonfire Night approaches, we would encourage people to attend one of the large organised displays held throughout the county, and follow the safety precautions set out by the organisers. However, it is understandable that families may want to hold their own firework displays. If you do decide to set fireworks off in a residential area, please consider your neighbours and follow this advice: Fireworks • When buying fireworks always ensure they comply with the British Standard BS7114. This will be shown on the box and on the fireworks themselves. • You cannot buy or use fireworks if you are under 18, and fireworks should always only be handled by a responsible adult. • Always follow the instructions on each firework box, and keep them in enclosed in a box until use. Never keep them in your pocket. • Light fireworks at arms length and stand well back. • Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn't gone off, it could still explode. • Children should always be supervised around fireworks. • Light sparklers one at a time wearing gloves, and always supervise children when

40

using them. They should not be given to children under five. • Keep pets indoors and leave the TV on to distract them from the noise. • Do not set off fireworks after 11pm, or midnight on 5th November. If you are setting your own fireworks off, please consider making your neighbours aware of your plans in advance, so it gives them the option to make alternative plans, or at least prepare themselves and their pets for the noise and disturbance fireworks can cause. Bonfires • Always position bonfires well away from buildings, trees and fireworks. • Keep a distance from bonfires, and always supervise children around them. • Check that no animals are hiding inside the fire before lighting. • Build the fire so that it is stable and will not collapse outwards. • Never use flammable liquids to light the fire, such as petrol. Superintendent Sue Thomas said: "Please be a responsible and considerate member of your community. We all know the dangers of fireworks, however we often become complacent due to them being commonplace. Please be responsible, consider others within your community, act within the law, stay safe and help others stay safe."

PARKING We know that people parking poorly is one of your biggest concerns - whether it's someone who is blocking your driveway with an inconsiderately parked car or a vehicle causing traffic disruption when illegally left on double yellow lines. These issues and more are very often raised as PACT priorities, and that's why we work closely with our partners to resolve them. Our aim is to show inconsiderate motorists that their behaviour will not be tolerated. Some parking myths It's ok to park on double yellow lines if it's only for a few minutes. Not true. Unless you have a disabled parking permit you are not permitted to park on double yellow lines at any time and the restrictions apply 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are a very few exceptions to this and there will be signs to indicate times/dates where it may be permitted. You could face a fine of £30 if you park illegally or you could even have your car towed away. I've only parked on the pavement to leave more room on the road. Parking a vehicle on the pavement could lead to an offence of obstruction being committed. This could result in a Fixed Penalty Notice being issued to offending vehicles. It can also cause danger/nuisance for pedestrians and wheelchairs users. I'm parked on a grass verge, so I should be ok.

permission, then you may be able to park on a grass verge lawfully. I'm dropping off my kids to school, so it's ok to park on the zig-zig lines outside. Please park considerately when dropping off children at schools. If you park on zig-zag lines, you could be committing an offence of obstruction, be liable for a £30 parking fine and even have your vehicle impounded, which will then cost a further £150 to release. What are the police doing? Local policing teams across West Mercia are busy helping communities where illegal and inconsiderate parking is a problem. While some enforcement activity is carried out jointly with partners (in many areas local authorities employ parking enforcement officers rather than the police), often problems can be alleviated through awareness and education, or other practical measures. We have been • Talking to motorists and advising them of the law • Liaising with council parking enforcement officers over local concerns • Issuing Penalty Charge Notices (parking fines) to persistent offenders • Working with partners to find alternative off-road parking opportunities, particularly near to schools Please can we remind motorists not to stop or park opposite or within 10m (32ft) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space.

Again, this is not always true. Vehicles cannot park, either fully or partly, on council-owned grass verges. Often there are local by-laws in place to prevent this, due to the damage vehicles can cause to grass or the need to keep access to properties clear. It's all Change Photos and article by Geraldine Holbourn

T

he last of the summer migrants have gone. Or have they? As winters become increasingly mild more black caps are staying and chiff chaffs were still in the garden in October. And others, are staying later. Plants and animals are responding to our changing climate. Who can blame these birds for lingering during balmy, Indian summer days. Migrating birds have been staying longer for the past 60 years, some arriving earlier in spring. Next year it will be ten years since I started writing these articles and in that time I’ve watched the seasons shift. The first tang of autumn is sooner than it was, winter is hardly a season at all. This change in our weather is disrupting many forms of wildlife. Animals such as hedgehogs are often encouraged out of hibernation too soon, only to get caught out by a cold snap. Bees are hatching earlier in

warmer springs, causing a mismatch between the pollinators and the pollinated, especially with those that have evolved together over millennia. The great sequences of life are now unreliable. Food may not be available when animals need it. As wildlife tries to adapt there are winners and losers. The cuckoo is arriving only to find that many of the birds whose nests they rely on have already begun breeding leaving the cuckoo high and dry. Yet greater spotted woodpeckers have increased by 368 per cent. What can we do? At first glance it would seem very little. On a grand scale we know all about energy consumption, recycling, reducing our carbon footprints. But what about the little things we could do to help? We probably can’t do anything to help specific flower/bee relationships but we can look out for hedgehogs, feed them when their natural food is scarce. We can feed the birds all year round,

we can plan our gardens for all year round pollen rich plants. It might mean a little research, but what a good way to spend winter evenings, planning for a garden rich in bees and butterflies. Traditional gardening or traditional plants may not be the way to go, but urban gardens are important in the battle against climate change and maintaining biodiversity. They wont replace natural habitats, but they will complement them and it’s becoming more apparent that many declining species, such as frogs, song thrush and hedgehogs are now more abundant in gardens than in low intensity farmland. What you and I can do IS important, IS worthwhile. If we garden for wildlife in our little plots, we will all contribute to saving our biodiversity upon which the natural balance of our world depends.

Wick Care Farm W

elcome to Wick Care Farm, just outside Pershore – a friendly place where adults and children are supported to carry out a wide variety of activities based on the farm.

Our most recent events have been a pop-up market on St George’s Day, and participating in the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. The next event is our Christmas Market, and we would love to see you there.

Everyone is encouraged to muck in and get involved, be that helping with outside jobs such as watering the plants in the polytunnel, feeding the animals, collecting eggs, and walking the dogs, or indoor jobs like cooking lunch, crafting, or planting seeds.

The Christmas Market is on Saturday 26th November, from 11am to 3pm. There will be a range of stalls selling crafts and tasty treats – perfect for some advance Christmas shopping! Many of the stalls will be offering produce such as jams and chutneys and Christmas decorations and gifts made on the farm itself, while others will be run by visiting friends. Hot drinks, cakes, and soup will be available throughout the day – and Wick Care Farm cakes are not to be missed! All funds raised will go back into the Care Farm: our big project at the moment is to get our main building ready for the winter, with the installation of a wood-burner and some better insulation.

People come to the farm with a range of support needs. Attending on a regular basis fosters a sense of purpose and community. Several times a year we fling open our doors by hosting a special event. These events are always great fun, and they’re an important part of our calendar as they help to raise awareness in the community, and to raise funds for the farm. Everyone on the farm helps with the preparation (which may begin weeks in advance), and we all enjoy welcoming our visitors and showing them around on the day.

46

We hope to see all of you – friends old and new – on 26th November. There will, of course, be opportunities on the day to talk to us in more detail about what we do, and to register your interest in getting involved. We would be delighted to have you as part of our family.

hropshire Blue - which has been described as a cross between Stilton and Cheshire - is made from pasteurized cow's milk and uses vegetable rennet; penicillium roqueforti produces the veining. For more information contact Jo Ballin 07971 363092 or Isobel Meikle 07967 173740, or visit the website:

Wick Care Farm

Christmas Market Saturday 26th November 11am until 3pm

Until recently, Shropshire Blue had never been made in Shropshire. It started out as a Scottish attempt to replicate Stilton cheese but with a subtle twist of adding annatto to the milk to give it an orange hue. The cheese has a deep orange-brown natural rind, and matures for a period of 10-12 weeks, with a fat content of about 34 per cent. The result is a soft textured, mellow, blue cheese with a glorious contrast of colours between the orange hue of the curd and the delicate blue veins.

Wick Care Farm

Christmas Market Saturday 26th November

Made in a similar way tountil Stilton, 3pm it is a soft 11am cheese with a sharp, strong flavour and a slightly tangy aroma. It is slightly sour but sharper than Stilton and generally creamier, and makes a great alternative to Blue Stilton.

Modern Methods! I was visiting my daughter last night, when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper. “This is the 21st century,” she said. “We don’t waste money on newspapers. Here, use my iPad.” I can tell you this … that fly never knew what hit him!

Failed Physcial ... I went to the doctor for my annual checkup. The nurse started with certain basics. "How much do you weigh?" she asked. "60kgs" I replied. The nurse put me on the scale. It turns out I weigh 80kgs. The nurse asked, "How tall are you?" "5 foot 4 inches," I said The nurse checked and saw that I was only 5 foot 2 inches. She then took my blood pressure and told me it was high. "Of course it's high!" I screamed, "when I came in here I was tall and slim! Now I'm short and fat!"
