The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy
of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the towns and villages in and around the Evesham
The Worcestershire Grapevine
& Pershore area and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Money-saving help for the heart of the home
Before

kitchen is the heart of the home. It's a room that's used more than almost any other. And it's a feature that often influences a prospective property owner's decision to buy. But there are times when a kitchen doesn't fulfil the needs of the home's new occupants. Some can be dated, others might be poorly designed and, in extreme cases, they are complete write-offs. In most properties, though, the kitchen is well laid out. It has been designed with the 'work triangle' in mind: a decades-old industry standard that states the three most important work stations – the sink, oven and fridge – should be positioned a set distance from each other. But what many buyers find is that, while the kitchen in their new home is perfectly practical, it has become tired and in need of a lift. And that's where local kitchen facelift Dream Doors, has the solution. Dream Doors specialises in kitchen makeovers. By swapping the doors and drawer fronts with made-tomeasure replacements – and usually fitting new worktops, a sink and taps – a Dream Doors kitchen makeover is typically half the cost of a fully fitted kitchen and takes just a couple of days for the firm's locally employed fitting teams to install. The company's name, however, is a misnomer, as Dream Doors supplies much more than just the doors. So when a kitchen is beyond repair or the layout doesn't work, and the only option is to start afresh, Dream Doors can supply and install a brand new kitchen. With 60 showrooms nationwide, Dream Doors is the UK's largest kitchen facelift retailer. The Worcester based franchise, based at 42 The Tything, is a family-run business owned by Mark and Dionne Battin. They welcome feedback through the independent consumer monitoring website Checkatrade.com too, generating testimonials with average scores of 9.7 out of 10. Every year I promise myself I will start my Christmas shopping early in the year so that by September, it’s all done. Well, here we are, its September again and once again I haven’t even started my Christmas shopping! No doubt it will be the usual mad rush to get everything bought and wrapped in time. So, the moral of this story is: don’t be like me and leave everything to the last minute … and that includes your Christmas advertising. The copy deadlines for the November and December issues are 10th of October and November, respectively. Make sure you get your adverts and events in as early as possible, as we get booked up very quickly. On to this month’s magazine. Cats Protection are again appealing for homes for some of their adult cats. As a cat owner myself, I know how tempting it can be to choose a kitten when looking for a new feline companion. However, several of my most recent “adoptees” have been adult cats, and unless you have a lot of time and patience to spare, I can highly recommend going this route: no litter trays or toilet training, no sleepless nights with little kittens missing mum and no worries about youngsters wandering off and getting lost. So if you are thinking of getting a cat, please give serious thought to adopting an adult rather than a kitten. Although summer is on the wane, there’s still plenty of entertainment going on in the county, so be sure to have a look at the What’s On page. And that’s all for this month. Until next time, keep happy and healthy.

the pump, and secondly, incorporating a filter box. This is a box through which the water passes before entering the pump or going down the waterfall. Its job is to collect debris and keep the water clean. It needs good access and regular attention.
Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
A Garden Pond T
his month I’m looking at ponds as an ideal way to encourage wildlife and to create movement and sound in your garden, whatever its size. The design of a pond offers lots of scope to make your dreams a reality, but in general it will be influenced by your garden’s existing size, slopes and soil. I would recommend a site visit by an expert to discuss any project. If you would like to use Foliation’s expertise, then please contact me directly on the numbers below. Pumps and Fountains The great advantage of having a
12
pump and/or fountain is that water is circulated and aerated which will allow you to keep fish. A waterfall will add movement to your garden and encourage wildlife. Birds are able to drink and bathe in the shallow water as it passes over the rocks or where it shoots from a top pool to a lower one. Fountains fed straight from the pump will add height, movement and more sound than a gentle tricking of water. The effects can be relaxing and soothing and offer cooling on a hot summer’s day. The big challenges when constructing a pond are firstly routing a protected cable to supply electrical power to
A clean pond is essential to encourage wildlife. Over time, organic matter entering the pond can sink to the bottom where it will rot into a silt and give off toxic gasses. Some animals may cope but wildlife new to the pond will pass it by. I suggest a couple of checks. If you have lilies growing in your pond and the leaves are above the water (rather than lying flat on the water) this could be a sign that the build-up of silt is causing them to sit too high. Another way is to use a bamboo cane. Lower it gently into the water until it sits on the top of the silt and mark this depth on the cane. Then, again gently (so as not to damage the pond liner) push through the silt to find the pond bottom. If the difference indicates a depth of silt greater than two inches, the pond probably needs cleaning. Help wildlife to get in and out your pond, and larger animals to drink from it, by providing a ramp or a shallow end. Planting Create different heights of planting.

Use low lily pads and tall stems of iris. Include shelves at different levels above and below the water level to increase your options for planting and to benefit pond life. Thoughtful planting in or near your pond is key for smaller insects who need access in and out of the water. For example, dragonfly need some form of ladder for their larva to develop under water then eventually climb out to fly away. Maintenance Maintenance of a pond will vary depending on the kind of pond you have, but generally now is the time to do the work, before the weather changes. When moving fish and other pond life it is vital not to shock them. Be sure that the young are large enough to be moved. Move fish and other pond life into a holding bay held at the same temperature. First get the biggest holding bay you can next to the pond (this will make
it easier to put everything in and get them back again later). A paddling pool is good for this purpose. Fill it with as much of the existing pond water as you can (without stirring up the silt,) as this will keep the animals in their own environment. Move wildlife across as you see them. Try not to touch them as most pond life is cold blooded, unlike us warm blooded humans. Aerate the holding bay and cover it with a net if needed. This is a fun thing to do with the kids as they can keep a record of what you find.
UV bulb they are normal renewed every 18 months. Gently put plants and pond life back, dividing and re-potting plants as you go. If you have enough water, allow the pond to fill up naturally with rain water, otherwise top up the pond level from your water butts. If you must use tap water, use a treatment available from any good aquatic supplier to take out the harmful chemicals. Then sit back and enjoy!
Remove plants and rocks. Once down to the silt, remove it and add it to the compost heap as it’s very good for the garden. Do not use chemicals or scrub the sides of the pond as there are a lot of good bacteria here for the wildlife to feed on. Clean the filter box if you have one, again using the exiting pond water. If your filter box has something called a

The Incredible Bombyx Mori
D
o you know where the saying "to spin a yarn" came from? Well, originally groups of silk spinners would tell tales and stories to pass the time. I have always been fascinated by the old weaving looms and how they work, so you can imagine my delight when I had a chance to view 19th century looms working and actually weaving silk, at Whitchurch Silk Mill. The centre welcomes visitors to the oldest working silk mill - still in its original building - in UK. It is a gem of industrial heritage in beautiful rural Hampshire. The old Georgian watermill wheel still works, powering the looms that weave the silk Silk is a natural fibre produced by the silkworm which is not really a worm, but the caterpillar of the silk moth, Bombyx Mori. When the moth reaches
maturity it lays about 400 eggs. For one month the lava eats masses of mulberry leaves and grows to 10 centimetres. It then spends thirty days spinning a cocoon around itself in a figure of eight and produces 1,200m of silk thread. It is then immersed in hot water and the thread wound into a skein of silk. It is dyed into many beautiful colours before it starts on a long journey from China or Brazil, to UK, and the factory, where it is then put on a vintage winding machine and wound onto bobbins. The weaving takes place on two types of 19th century power looms called tappet and dobby. The shuttle moves back and forth at great speed and can weave one metre of silk cloth every hour. I was amazed how fast the shuttle moved and lost sight of it on several occasions only to spot it later ‌ but what a sight to see these old machines still working. These machine can weave delicate bombazine silk, camlet - a luxurious satin weave using camel hair crepe fabric, damask with many elaborate patterns, faille - a ribbed fabric - moirÊ fabric which has a watermark, lovely shiny taffeta and satin, and my favourite, organza, which is a stiff, lightly transparent, gauze-like fabric woven with raw silk What a fantastic day I had. I learnt so many interesting facts, ate a delicious lunch in the mill's tearoom, and of course I visited their souvenir shop. This sells attractive and exclusive gifts made on the

Green : Lucky or Not?
G
reen is the colour of life, fertility, renewal, regeneration and immortality. It is also present in a number of national flags – for instance Italy, Hungary and the Republic of Ireland. The Egyptians believed a god named Thoth led the souls of the dead to a green hill of everlasting life and eternal wisdom. The prophet Mohammed wore a green cloak and turban. The Archangel Michael is also depicted conducting the souls of the departed to the green hill of Zion. The god of fertility in Celtic myths was associated with green and it is the colour of love associated with the Roman goddess Venus and the Greek goddess Aphrodite. In China, jade stones represent virtue and beauty. Green is associated with healing and is used on hospital wards and for staff uniforms. It represents ‘go’ in traffic lights around the world and with railway and ship signals. Before the 1950s, Santa’s suit was green until Coca Cola bought him out and changed the colour to red. Colour blindness affects 5 – 8% of men and 0.5% of women. People who are protans (red weak) and deutans (green weak) comprise 99% of this group. Modern absinthe dates from 1792 when Dr Pierre Ordinaire commercialised it as a cure-all.
18
Then, seeing its aperitif potential, Henri-Louis Pernod funded the Pernod Fils Absinthe Company in 1805. Absinthe’s moment came with the 1840s Algerian wars when French soldiers drank it as a prophylactic against disease. They brought it home and by the 1860s Parisian cafes had established 5pm as ‘l’heure verte’ – the green hour. Green is said by some to be an unlucky colour. A person can be described as green with jealousy or green around the gills with nausea. An old rhyme says ‘marry in green – ashamed to be seen.’ It is also considered to be an unlucky colour for actors. This is thought to date from the time when the French dramatist Moliere was taken ill during a performance of his last play ‘The Imaginary Invalid.’ After the performance, two priests refused to give him the last rites because of his bad reputation and he died, still wearing his green costume. A rumour spread that his soul didn’t make it into heaven. Actors still consider it to be unlucky to wear a green costume.
In 1778 Swedish chemist Carl Scheele began experimenting with arsenic. He used it to invent a shade of colour called Scheele’s Green. The dye was widely used in fabric and wallpaper. Scheele knew arsenic was toxic but he didn’t expect people to eat their clothes. However, if the fabric or paper got wet, it gave off a poisonous gas causing illness or death. There were accounts of babies dying in their nurseries after playing on green carpets and one lady who purchased a box of green gloves was horrified when her hands broke out in blisters. People at that time knew arsenic was poisonous - most households had a jar of it for poisoning rats – but it took until 1895 for regulations to be put in place in factories where workers were exposed to arsenic. When Napoleon died in 1821 (from stomach cancer) it was rumoured that he’d been poisoned. When a lock of his hair was analysed in 1960 it revealed traces of arsenic. His wallpaper contained Scheele’s Green.

e all enjoy a trip to the hairdressers for a pampering session; some of our pets are no different. A grooming session at home not only gives us the opportunity to bond with our pets, but also it allows us to carry out an all over examination to check for parasites, wounds, lumps and bumps and anything else out of the ordinary.
Getting your pets used to having the ears, eyes, teeth, feet and body looked at can also make a surprising difference to how relaxed they are when they visit the vets, because to them it is a normal part of their daily routine. What you might find when grooming your pet? Parasites need no introduction to pet owners! The two major ones to keep a look out for are fleas and ticks. yy Fleas: Pets are often very
The Benefits of Regularly Grooming Your Pet! effective at removing fleas, so as well as looking for these tiny pests; you may see signs of brown flea “dirt”. This is a very reliable indicator that fleas are present. Fleas are a major cause of skin problems in pets and they can also bite humans. • Ticks: Regular grooming and removal of ticks, alongside an effective product that will kill or repel ticks, forms the basis for prevention of tick borne diseases. There are a number of products available for flea and tick treatment and prevention, including a very effective tablet for dogs; we are running a long term loyalty scheme on this product. For puppies when you buy the first treatment, you get the second one free and for adults dogs, when you buy three treatments you get the fourth one free.

Lumps, Bumps and Swellings are another thing keep to a watchful eye out. If you find a skin lump on your pet, there are several possible underlying causes. It is a good idea to get any lumps, bumps or swellings checked by a vet as soon as possible.

No. 10 The High Street, Pershore, Worcestershire, WR10 1BG 01386 554349
An autumnal hello from all of us at No. 10 High Street, Pershore!
As we leave the hectic, manic days of Plummy August and the Plum Festival for yet another year, we move into what I think is the magical season of the year - the golden days of Autumn. Homemade game pies, home-cured bacon and our wonderfully popular ham off the bone, accompanied by our homemade white pudding which is back on the menu! The hops are now ready to be harvested and we are putting together the finishing touches for many of our supplied Harvest Suppers throughout the various parishes, and of course we are preparing the last few pig roasts of the season. Once again as always, we will be supporting our friends at the County Air Ambulance Open Day which this year is Sunday 17th September. This will be at their headquarters at Strensham - a fantastic show and a good family day out. Pop in and see us, and support the wonderful work they do. With Christmas drawing closer we are already on the case, and have ordered our free-range Worcestershire turkeys and cockerels from Rob Caldicott of Wythall. This year we are pleased to announce that we will also be stocking Judy Goodman’s Free-Range Worcestershire Geese! Christmas is nearly here . . . don’t leave your order to late! Our Deli Team has been enhanced by a new member of staff, Phil, who brings with him a range
of new delicacies for you to try, including homemade vegetarian pate and homemade smoked mackerel pate . . . to mention just a couple of goodies! Phil takes over from Natalie, who is going on maternity leave! We all wish her well, but no doubt she will be still hovering in the background when grandchild number two is on the way!

National Trust Expert to talk about ‘Amazing Croome’
A
talk on local National Trust attraction Croome by Property Manager, Michael Forster-Smith, is the autumn highlight for the Friends of St. James, Bishampton on Friday, 29th September. Using examples from Croome’s unique photographic archive, Michael will illustrate the fascinating story of the property in his talk ‘Prepare to be amazed – what makes Croome so special’, including details of its past and present, as well as future, plans. Visitors to the talk will be able to share Michael’s passion about the art, history and natural environment of Croome and its relevance to 21st century life, and learn from his knowledge of the Coventry family, Robert Adam and Lancelot ‘Capability Brown’ who designed the estate’s extensive gardens. Croome was in fact ‘Capability’ Brown’s first large scale commission and is often

A familiar face and voice to many from his TV and radio appearances, Michael has personally choreographed every aspect of Croome’s development during his twelve years as Property Manager, with the support of dedicated colleagues and an impressive team of volunteers.
Croome is at the heart of our county, literally on our own ‘doorstep’. It has become a place of sanctuary and a centre for entertainment, learning and innovation for people of all ages.
Ian Hughes, Chair of the Friends of St. James charity, said: “Our autumn talk will provide a rare opportunity to benefit from Michael’s insight and very practical experience of Croome’s rapid progression from humble, derelict
Yet, surprisingly, many local people have yet to experience the magical kaleidoscope of experiences there. Even those who do know Croome will gather some fascinating information from the talk and for those who don’t, this is a real chance to come and prepare to be amazed!” Tickets for the event are priced at £10 to include an introductory drink and nibbles. ummertime can be a fun time of year for many, with holidays to enjoy. At Evesham Cats Protection we know that the summertime will be a busy time with lots of unwanted kittens being handed in and because kittens are popular they are quickly rehomed; sadly the older cats in our care are then over- looked. This month's article is dedicated to the various cats who are keen to enjoy what's left of the summer in a new home and garden. I would like to introduce: Mr P - he has had a few years of living as a stray and has developed a some bad habits with regard to food and is quite greedy. He is a confident cat and would soon settle down in a home where he can do his own thing but has plenty of outside space, with a shelter and no other pets to share his home. Boe - is a typical torti cat, who is quite independent, although she likes to be friends on her terms. She is a petite cat, who would also need a lot of outside space but some home comforts too, with a tolerant owner.
together as they have never been separated. They are a little reserved in the cat pen and so haven't had much interest. Given a quiet home where they can develop they would become happier cats. Lola - is a petite, shy cat who given time in the right environment would also become a loving and friendly companion. Baby Doll - as mentioned there are many kittens available, but please consider the older cats when you are looking for a new companion. Please come and visit these cats and many others in person, between 10am and 3.30pm - we are open seven days a weekion. Please note that hopefully some of these cats may have gone to news homes by the time you read this, so please check the website for up-to-date details of cats available for rehoming:
www.evehamcpl.org
Molly - has been waiting a number of months for her new home, partly due to her colour. She is a bit fed up with having been in the cat pen for such a long time and can be a bit grumpy, but given time and would become a loving and friendly companion. Blondie - although being a young cat, she has had a litter of six kittens who have now gone to new homes. Blondie would also like a home for herself now - she is a friendly and adaptable cat. Ruby & Charlie - are mother and son. They are a close pair and so we really want to home them

n Saturday 16th September Inkberrow’s beautiful Norman church of St. Peter will once again resound to a 40-piece symphony orchestra – The Inkberrow Sinfonia.
This year’s concert opens with Rossini’s rousing overture “Tancredi”, followed by Weber’s tuneful bassoon concerto, with local soloist Rebecca Eldridge, who is now pursuing a successful career in London.
This is the 15th annual concert by this carefully selected group of musicians, comprising both professional and semiprofessional players under the direction of Richard Laing, a nationally known conductor. Over the years these concerts have raised thousands of pounds for the Chernobyl Children’s Project UK and St. Peter’s Church Fabric Fund.
After the interval the very popular soprano soloist Katie Leaver will join the orchestra for one of Mozart’s most beautiful concert arias. The concert concludes with Haydn’s “Drumroll” symphony. Tickets are just £10, available from the organiser, Jenny Powis (01386 792909) or from Inkberrow shop or Post Office.

Wine: Gems Of France
F
rench cuisine is legendary and, complementing many dining occasions, are fabulous wines from France. France produces wines for all occasions and to suit all palates. From whites, through all others, to Sparkling and really great reds, France supplies superb wines, worldwide, many of which are multi awardwinning. For this quest I searched for a family producer of well-presented high-quality wines, with knowledge and experience of previous generations. Productions of Ferraud wines have been ongoing since 1882. The wines produced express the personality and characters of the different appellations and areas of wine productions. Emphasis on taste, quality and consistency are paramount and many awards have been won by this company for their exceptional wines. The following are some selections, from their impressive range. P. Ferraud & Fils Saint-Véran La Chardonneraie I found as an excellent white wine. The designation of Saint Véran was recognised during 1971, with Pierre
Ferraud being a main character for its promotions and recognitions. Utilising the Chardonnay grape variety, to great advantage, this wine will not disappoint and has many followers. A very pleasant bouquet precedes the grand mouthfeel. Superb with white meats, fish and seafood dishes. P. Ferraud & Fils Brouilly Domaine Rolland, that I located amongst their splendid wine range, is a very popular red production. The deep ruby-red colour entices to the wonderful bouquet and mouthfeel, to follow. This powerful and well-balanced wine has a great palate sensation and finish. P. Ferraud & Fils Morgon Domaine Ferraud Les Charmes is a further example of the quality wines from this producer. Again, the bouquet satisfies the nasal experience, very well indeed. The flavours on the mouth come through as rich and fruity. This full-bodied, powerful red wine is extremely popular, has a long finish and many devotees. Other superlative wines include their Beaujolais Villages Les Merrains and SaintAmour Cuvée Ensorceleuse. The red wines, utilising the Gamay grape, are great with red meats, etc. Very popular, they are chosen regularly and grace many dining occasions, constantly. A company dedicated and committed to producing high-quality wines that will satisfy and impress. www.ferraud.com As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

5 Ways to Stay Motivated to Exercise Regularly 1) Change Your Mindset Rather than finding an excuse NOT to exercise – start focusing on the positive benefits of regular exercise. It’s not just about the fat-loss and changing your body shape, regular exercise can help with physical and mental health. So many of our members use their workouts to have a bit of time to themselves, have a positive influence on not only their life but their children’s, keep themselves energised to be able to tackle whatever is thrown at them and maintain a healthy lifestyle to be able to do things that they and their family enjoy. 2) Set a Goal Setting SMART goals can help you focus and set a clear direction for what you want to achieve and how you’re going
34
to do it. It’s really important to be specific when goal setting, don’t just say “I want to get fitter” as this is really vague. If you want to run 5K, then choose a specific date you want to be able to run this by and sign up to a race. Or if you want to lose X amount of weight for holiday/event, then set a date, write down your goal, devise a plan and work towards it - setting little milestones to achieve along the way to monitor progress and revise your plan if needed. It’s really important that your goal is realistic, otherwise you’re setting yourself up for failure, which will only be detrimental to you, your goals and your motivation levels. 3) Schedule Your Workouts I can’t emphasise this enough and I regularly tell our
members to make sure they schedule in their workouts. You should see a workout as a really important meeting that you can’t miss, ultimately you’re working hard to improve your health/fitness so why would you want to skip it/put it off? Once you realise that your health is a top priority, you will make every excuse to workout, rather than putting it off. 4) Make it Fun By nature, humans need fun and variety to stay motivated. Exercise shouldn’t be a boring, mundane task that you feel you just ‘go through the motions’ to complete. Find a workout that suits you, there are so many different options out there to get fit, it’s all about what works best for you. It’s not a ‘one program fits all’.

And mix things up, don’t just stick to one type of exercise, mix your training up with strength and cardio to keep your muscles guessing and to maximise your workouts.
on hand immediately to help get them back on track.
5) Get Support Whether it’s a training partner, friend, family or coach – having that support there will help you stay motivated to exercise regularly. If your training buddy/coach is relying on you to workout together you’re less likely to let them down.
So, start focusing on the positive benefits of exercise, set a goal, write it down and schedule in your workouts to work towards it. Have fun and ENJOY working out with a friend or other like-minded people. Before you know it, you’ll be noticing the positive
affects of exercise, feeling fitter, healthier, happier and more energised. The lawyer then offers, "Tell you what. Let me talk to her, I'll see what I can find out and I'll let you know." A week later the lawyer calls the man. He says, "I spoke to your wife on the phone for three hours. You want my advice?" “Yes” said the man said, "What should I do?" Common targets are trailers, quads, horse boxes, power washers, electric fence batteries, lawnmowers, tools and farm equipment. Rural crime normally occurs during the hours of darkness as there is less chance of being observed and detected, the general public are not about and it is easier to see other vehicles and persons approaching. Engagement with our rural communities has provided information that most farms and outbuildings are 'cased' during daylight hours by 'unauthorised callers' using various plausible excuses. See website link below for crime prevention advice sheets on crimes that occur in the rural community: https://www.westmercia.police.uk/ article/13024/Crime-prevention-advice-for We are committed to targeting criminals and taking action. If you are a victim of crime in a rural area, please report it - it will be investigated. Please call police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

Engineering Success
P
ershore High School students Alix Freckelton, Ryan Hobbs, Vanessa Kostadinova and Edward Jordan recently displayed their innovative solution to a real world of work problem at the Engineering Education Scheme (EES) Celebration and Assessment Day. The Celebration Day was the final part of the EES award, a national programme, providing talented Year 12 technology, maths and science students with handson experience of engineering with the sponsorship and help of local companies. For the past five months, professional engineers from the partner organisations have been working with the teams of students and their teachers on real engineering challenges. A broad range of projects have been undertaken throughout the Scheme’s programme and fantastic results have been achieved across the West Midlands.
engineering: “I really enjoyed the experience of working with young, enthusiastic engineers to create a well thought out product with real potential. It was great to see the progression from the students’ initial ideas on a piece of paper to a final working product.” Back in September the students were presented with an engineering challenge set by Worcester Bosch Group, a company which specialises in the manufacture of heating and hot water products. The students were tasked with designing and building a product to prevent waste water from damaging a residential boiler (Backfill Prevention Device). The four students faced numerous challenges over the duration of the scheme, but through a great deal of determination discovered the solutions required. One of the highlights for them was a four-day residential stay at Birmingham University, where they were able to work with lecturers and employ their machining facilities; a fantastic opportunity to experience university life.
We were delighted to work with Worcester Bosch Group and our mentor Paul Kershaw (Development Engineer) was very keen to further develop greater links with our school, and to communicate his passion for
The Worcestershire Grapevine
Alix Freckelton (Team Leader) said, “The engineering education scheme has been an incredibly challenging experience that has allowed me to develop useful skills that can be applied to a wide range of situations. Though demanding, the assessment day was a valuable insight into formal presentations and interaction with professionals.” Neil Harding (Head of Technology) said, "It was a very challenging time for the students, but they coped with everything amazingly well and learned a great deal. I firmly believe that the experience has excited and inspired them, which of course, was one of the main objectives behind the scheme. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Paul Kershaw, Kate Hayward and Dave Ball who have been of great support to the group.” The Engineering Education Scheme is part of The Royal Academy of Engineering’s BEST Programme, challenging students from all over the UK to solve industrial problems set by local companies.

understandable desire for private collections, which unfortunately has lead to over-exploitation.
Steve Slater, Deputy Head of the Discovery Trail said, “The keepers excitedly opened the incubator after waiting many weeks and were completely shell shocked to discover this little but very important find — the very first baby of this species at West Midland Safari Park.
Fortunately, the cohesion of European zoos’ breeding programmes are helping to support the species, in a vow to support tortoise conservation in a regulated and ethical environment.
In the wild, pancake tortoises inhabit the mountains of Kenya and Tanzania with a preference for dry areas with rocky outcrops. Although their wild diet would usually offer grass and the occasional treat of fallen fruit, at the Park Finn can expect vegetation from courgettes to dandelions to be on the menu.
“The pancake tortoise is a species of flat-shelled tortoise, in the family ‘Testudinidae’. Its common name refers to the flat shape of its shell. Unlike other tortoises, the shell on a pancake tortoise is actually flexible making them lighter and speedier than other tortoises. The biggest threat to pancake tortoises is habitat destruction and being taken for the pet trade. Due to its vulnerable status, they are now the subject of a breeding programme in European zoos, which ours are a part of.”
With a slow reproductive rate and a very lengthy incubation period, hatchings such as this one at the Park are always an event to honour and has been eagerly

Baby animals at the Park of this size have to be monitored by keepers, however the adult pancake tortoises can be viewed in the Reptile House located in the Discovery Trail. The Discovery Trail is included in the standard admission charge of £23.00 for adults, £18.00 for children aged 3-15 and £21.00 for concessions. Admission includes a voucher for a return visit or safari gift. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra. Further information and tickets are available from the Park’s website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. Time to Pause. T
here are many reasons for growing your own food, but for sheer satisfaction there’s nothing like it. Picking raspberries on a late summer evening it’s easy to get lost in the micro world around you; it’s a perfect moment of tranquility when time seems to slow and the 21st century, with all its problems, disappears. And of course there are the obvious benefits of fresh fruit. Management in my garden is laissez faire. I never use pesticides and only employ weed killer as a last resort. The result is not a garden you’ll find in the National Garden Scheme’s yellow book with my opening times. I have reason to be a little self-satisfied though, for my light handed approach has produced a garden where the balance is just about right. Alive with an army of little helpers - birds, frogs, slow worms, toads and many, many others - my garden is kept relatively pest-free.
The Worcestershire Grapevine
As I harvested my raspberries an early tawny owl called from the edge of the woodland. Was it the same one that deposited a pellet into one of my potted geraniums? These ‘furry’ pellets are the regurgitated remains of the owl’s last meal. Owls eat their prey whole and what is not digestible it brings back in the form of a pellet, which if taken apart, reveals the bones of the victim, and in this case an insect too. Were these bones all that was left of the bank vole I’d watched whilst cutting dandelion leaves weeks earlier? Thankfully no, for I spotted it again a few days later. Something else caught my eye in the long grass. It flashed through the Michaelmas daisies like lightening, sleek and lithe: a stoat. The rabbits had better watch out, for stoats are merciless killers but it’s another creature which will help to keep the balance just right in my garden.
Along with blueberries I’ve also planted some buddleia. Not my favourite shrub but adored by butterflies. This year I’ve had several commas and what I think was a pearl bordered fritillary plus the usual cabbage whites, red admirals, peacocks and meadow browns. Butterflies need all the help they can get from us so please bear that in mind when choosing flowering shrubs for your gardens. Raspberries picked and the sun was dipping behind the Black Mountains, but there was still time to just stand and take in everything around me. The air was hushed and still, the silence filled with expectation as if the world had taken a deep breath, pausing, before preparations for winter began. Article and photos by Geraldine Holbourn

Hereford Red by Andrew Brooks
H
ereford Red is a deep coloured, mild and creamy local cheese. It has a medium flavour similar to a Red Leicester, with a fuller taste. Hand made at Pond Farm, Whittington, by Nick Hodgets who has been making cheese for well over 20 years - a great cheesemaker, with a range of different cheeses all produced locally. A mild, nutty English cheese, made from pasteurized cow’s milk and vegetarian rennet, and coloured a deep red with Annatto, a dye extracted from the seed of a South America plant. This cheese gives a good colour to any cheeseboard.
