I’m not going to trot out that hoary old chestnut about how the year is flying by, because it just makes me sound like my grandmother, but have you ever wondered why it is that the older we get, the faster time seems to whizz by? There is a theory about that – probably dreamed up by some clever individual with not enough to do – but plausible nonetheless. So here it is - and you can decide if it makes sense, or not: when you are 10 years old, a year is one tenth of your lifespan, which is a large percentage, so time seems to go slowly. As you get older, a year represents a smaller and smaller percentage of your life, so that by the time you get to 50, a year is only one fiftieth of your life which is why time seems to go so much faster. Of course it could just be that when you are 10, you are constantly looking forward to some special event – birthdays, Christmas, holidays, etc. – so time seems to drag, whereas once you reach 50 all you seem to do is prepare and pay for said birthdays, Christmas and holidays, hence the reason the years seem to race by! Which explanation do you subscribe to, or does anyone have any other theories? Well that’s enough nonsense for now, happy reading and enjoy the Bank Holidays. See you again next month.

Your Town ... Your Plan ... Your Say ...

T

he new Town Plan is done. In December, groups and organisations who’ll help with implementation, commented on the draft. Over the Big Breakfast Weekend at the end of January we held a successful exhibition for town residents – over 250 visits. On Thursday 25th February, Ledbury Town Council unanimously adopted the text of the updated Town Plan. Text and supporting documents are available to view on the Town Council website – www. ledbury towncouncil.gov.uk You may have seen much of this information included in the Neighbour-hood Plan consultation event at the beginning of April. A large group of volunteers completed a huge amount of work. By way of a thank you, they will be invited to a launch event on Friday 8th May, when the final, professional version of the plan will be available – complete with photographs and graphics. This will then go on to the Town Council and Imagine Ledbury websites for you to download.

Hard copies of the plan will be available to borrow through the Library and a simple summary document is being produced for every household. Some say drawing up the plan is the easy bit – now what? There will be lots of opportunities for volunteers to help take projects forward to improve our town and our community – many of which will be showcased at the Town Plan stand for Community Day – 11th June 2016. ow that spring is in bloom and British Summer Time has officially begun, it’s time to brush away the winter cobwebs and have a spring clean. This shouldn’t end with spring cleaning your home – it’s also the perfect time to review your home and contents insurance. There are a few very simple things you might like to consider: r Make sure your home contents insurance is tailored to your needs and circumstances. Have you purchased any new high value items that aren’t currently declared in your home contents insurance policy? If so, it’s important to let your insurer know so you don’t get caught out should you need to make a claim. r Read the terms and conditions carefully so you’re aware of any exceptions that could stop you from being eligible for a claim. If there is anything you are not sure about, ask your provider for clarification. r Double check your policy renewal dates – auto renewing your policy can mean that you may be missing out on the best deals and, in some instances, paying too much for cover. If you know when your policy is due

to end you can shop around in good time to check if there is a better deal out there. r If you feel like you are paying over the odds or there are additions to your policy that you don’t feel you need, start by having with a chat with your provider to see if they can offer a better deal. Garden & Shed Security The basics of protecting your home and garden

S

pring is now upon us and many people across West Mercia will be turning their attention to the garden, others will be taking out their bikes to enjoy the warmer weather and some may be preparing the BBQ. Many people store their gardening equipment, tools, bikes and BBQ's in their shed and unfortunately this means that these outbuildings are often seen as an easy target by thieves. But there are many ways to keep your garden, shed and home safe and below are some of our tips to help you protect your property. The basics of protecting your home and garden Thieves will generally take the easiest option when considering breaking into a shed, outbuilding or home and security measures such as a side gate and motionactivated lighting, can deter the would-be thief. However, there are other ways to protect your home and garden. Gravel paths and drives are a fantastic way of cheaply and unobtrusively discouraging a thief from entering your garden. Gravel makes a loud noise when stepped on which carries well at 22

night and may wake the home owners, neighbours or a dog. This is instantly off-putting to a thief. Another way to protect your home is to plant prickly hedging around the perimeter of your garden. Protecting your shed The first aspect of protecting your shed is to fit a good quality lock. There is a range of sturdy padlocks, bolts, hasps and staples available on the market but make sure you get one that is appropriate to the strength of your shed door and frame. Remember that any opening windows on your shed will also require a good quality lock. In addition to a lock, you may wish to consider fitting an alarm on your shed. There are three types of alarm system that could be used: r An infra-red detector in the shed that picks up movement and body heat. r A door contact system. r An alarm within the padlock itself, which sounds if the lock is forced open or tampered with. These systems can be purchased

from most DIY stores and locksmiths. Another aspect of protecting your garden shed is that the items inside it - as well as being expensive to replace - can also be used to break into your home. For example, a garden spade applied with the right leverage could be used to force open a window or door. Take these items into consideration when planning the security of your shed and think about chaining and padlocking tools that could assist a thief. General garden precautions Don't leave items in your garden that could make the life of a thief any easier. For example, a ladder left out in your garden could be used to get into the upper floor of your home or onto the top of your shed. Likewise, other tools and gardening equipment left outside could be used to break into your home. Just taking a few minutes to lock these items away will greatly increase your security. Also consider using a property marking system to protect the items in your garden and home. Property marking makes your belongings much less attractive to thieves as they realise that the

goods can easily be identified as stolen and traced back to the original owner. There are many ways to mark property; including engraving, UV marking and forensically coded systems such a SmartWater.

Dymock Cricket Club Nominated to be a National Showcase Club by the ECB

I

f anybody had suggested, even as recently as January of this year, that our community club would be joined on 1st April by two English cricketing greats – Alistair Cook, current captain and Mike Gatting, a former captain – to help prepare for the new season, I would have said they were having a laugh. But they did. Read on . . . Coming on the back of generous grants from both the ECB and Sport England, we were delighted to be nominated by Gloucester Cricket Board to be the ECB’s National Showcase Club as part of the NatWest Cricket Force weekend, and humbled to be selected. The ECB work hard each year, with NatWest and co-sponsors Jewson, to support cricket clubs across the country and prepare for the new season. Our (nearly complete) new pavilion obviously provided a stunning backdrop for the community based day, with 174 volunteers working on a Ledbury Focus

range of projects around the ground, digging, chopping, painting, sanding, planting and cleaning, as well pupils from Ann Cam erecting more than 25 bird boxes as part of environmental bio-diversity plan. Dymock was flattered by the level of support from the ECB. Tom Harrison, CEO of the ECB, recently returned from the T20 tournament in India, barely had time to drive in a post for a new stile on the boundary, make a speech, grab a burger, and dash back to Heathrow for a flight back to India for the T20 final! Not to be outdone, NatWest executives and staff, totaling 30 or more, were seen painting our tool shed, fences and sightscreens – we hope we can maintain our relationship with NatWest,

possibly in our proposed and revised mid-week ‘Pubs and Clubs’ league? e welcome, all ages to 'Come along and have a go' at your friendly local Tennis Club near the Gloucester Road roundabout. We are set in the lovely parkland of Ledbury Park and boast three recently refurbished, floodlit courts. Club mornings are Wednesday, Friday and Sunday 10am onwards. For those adults who are a little uncertain about going straight into club play, there is coaching available through our Club Coach, who is linked to Malvern Coaching academy, or there is 'Rusty Rackets' on a Wednesday evening 6pm to 7pm for members and non members. Wednesday evening from 7pm is also a club evening. For those who might like to be considered for match play, ladies come along 7pm Mondays and men 7pm Tuesdays. We run tournaments and have teams entered into the Hereford and Worcester leagues. Our Mens and Ladies A teams have just won their Winter Leagues and will be promoted next winter. Friday evening is for Juniors and Coaches come

External Parasites of Dogs & Cats

W

ith the warmer weather upon us this springtime, fleas and ticks will become extremely prevalent. Dogs and cats are out more exploring and hunting in the sunshine; parasites are a problem all year round but they are mainly a problem in the summertime. They are particularly rife in some areas especially where there is rough foliage and bracken. Ticks act as vectors: in the same way that a mosquito transmits malaria by sucking the blood from a person, the tick does the same to an animal. In the process of feeding, the disease will transmit from the tick to the dog or cat. This can cause irritation and localised infection and they sometimes carry diseases such as Lyme disease. Recently recorded in the UK is Babesiosis, a disease carried by a new imported tick (Dermacentor) and first seen in Essex. The parasite causes the dog's immune system to attack its own blood cells, causing severe anaemia and requiring a blood transfusion to treat. With pet travel increasing, this is the supposed cause of this tick and disease entering the UK. It is important to know that it isn’t contagious between dogs but prevention is much easier than cure. Fleas & Ticks

There are a many effective products available for the prevention of fleas and ticks for both cats and dogs. For dogs: spot-on preparations such as ‘Advantix’ are monthly prepara-tions preventing both fleas and ticks. There is a new tablet ‘Bravecto’ which, even though a little pricier, lasts up to three months, or a ‘Serresto’ collar which provides protection for up to eight months. These all should be used in combination with worming treatment such as ‘Milbemax’, which last three months, preventing all worms including lungworm. For cats: a spot-on preparation ‘Broadline’ works by preventing

all parasites and should be applied monthly. Lungworm is an increasing problem in the UK and unless prevented or treated quickly, can be fatal. Slugs and snails carry the lungworm larvae, and your pet can become infected when they accidentally (or deliberately) eat these common garden pests whilst rummaging through undergrowth, eating grass, drinking from puddles or outdoor water bowls, or pick them up from their toys. We have all the preventative products mentioned in stock, so don’t hesitate to call in to the practice and collect some treatment for your animal.

Red-Tailed Bumblebee

ach species of bumblebee has three forms, the large queen bees, and smaller female workers and male drones.

This year, the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust is running a new series taking a closer look at one key species of flora or fauna each month. For May, we are looking at the red-tailed bumblebee or Bombus lapidarius . . .

The queen Red-tailed Bumblebee is a very large, black bumblebee with a big red bottom or 'tail'. Worker bees are smaller versions of the queens, whilst drones also have yellow hair on the face and two yellow bands on the thorax. The hairs on the pollen baskets, which are found on the back legs of females, are all black, but can be red in males Similar looking bees Another bumblebee – the red-

shanked carder bee (Bombus ruderarius) – has a similar basic colour pattern. However this species is much rarer. The hairs on the pollen baskets are orange, not black and the abdomen is almost circular, whereas that of the red-tailed bumblebee is elongated. The Red tailed cuckoo bee (Bombus rupestris) mimics both these bumblebees. It has a similar colour pattern, but is distinguished by the dark smokey wings and thicker, shinier and sparsely furred body. The male had faint grey bands on the abdomen. the bumblebees have already established their nests. Where to see them The red-tailed bumblebee is widely distributed throughout Britain. They can be spotted in a wide range of habitats including open countryside and woodlands and is regularly seen in gardens. Queens begin to emerge from hibernation in April and start to create a colony by laying a few eggs that hatch as workers. She builds her nest underground, often within an unoccupied mammal nest or hole. Males emerge later and live only for the summer – both they and the old queen die come the autumn. The new queens raised during the summer overwinter in ‘traditional’ hibernation sites north-facing banks often in open woodland. The same Ledbury Focus

sites may be used year after year by large numbers of queens. An established nest may contain between 100 and 300 workers – a large population for our native bumblebee species. How to help red-tailed bumblebees to thrive Though currently a relatively common species, bumblebees are under threat from loss of habitat and the increasing use of pesticides and herbicides. Encourage bees into your garden by providing nectar-rich flower borders and fruit trees. Some bumblebee species are known to have a marked preference for visiting particular species of flower; however the red-tailed bumblebee collects pollen from a variety of plants though

prefers flowers that have a ‘landing platform’ such as dandelions, daisies and clover – so don’t be too quick to mow your lawn when these appear! You could also create a bumblebee box using an upturned clay flower pot to provide a nesting site. Here’s how: r Half bury a 9"/225mm deep clay flowerpot in a dry, well drained, sheltered, sunny flower bed or hedge bottom so that the drainage hole in the base faces outwards. r Attach a short 5-6cm length of hosepipe (25-30 mm wide) to the drainage hole.

ike all areas of the garden, by creating different environments for plants to grow means you can extend the range of varieties needed.

Rock gardens offer the chance to grow alpines in your garden, that would normally grow on the side of hills. These areas of changing interest are coming back into fashion with the wide range of plants available in garden centres nowadays.

A straightforward rock garden is one without water; obviously water is another thing that can be added in to create movement through a rock garden, but can be quite complex to build into the rockery. Therefore we are just looking at rockeries themselves.

Stones The type of stone used is particularly important. Ideally,

when picking rocks, a granite stone and not a porous stone would be preferable. This will prevent them shattering during the frosts/winters and ensure that the rocks look as good as when they first went in. Rockery Options There are two options for building a rockery: either build it into an existing slope, or create/construct a mound with the rocks built into it. Either option is suitable, but the selected plants would change. If you are building into an existing bank, the bank might already be wet. If you are creating a mound then this area would tend to be drier. Therefore choosing the correct plants would be essential to fit into those areas. Choosing your Rocks The best thing to do is to choose a random selection of rocks. If they are all the same size then this looks rather unnatural. If they can be

layered, i.e. resemble a natural rock face, this would create the desired result. Placing the rocks in a crescent shape, starting at the bottom and digging into the bank, will create pockets for planting. Choosing your Plants Choosing your plants is obviously very critical because you want plants that will flow over the edge and slowly cover some of the rocks to make it look natural. Something to bear in mind when placing your plants is that you might want to use some of the stones as stepping stones through your planting in order to maintain and weed the area.

Strata of the Rocks The strata lines and the shapes of the rocks are very important. By getting a cluster of three, i.e. two lower ones and one onto the next level gives you the area, but you ideally want them to look like they have fallen and have settled to naturally protrude from the soil. So the strata lines - the lines of soil or settlement materials that have formed over billions of years, creating the ridges or layering in the rocks - getting these to flow in the right direction will make it more pleasing to the eye.

Again choosing your plants carefully is hugely important and adding horticultural grit over the whole area would help to keep it down and the weeds under control.

Weeding Weeding is highly important, ensuring unwanted weeds such as cooch grass don’t get a firm hold. Once they root underneath the stones it then becomes a real issue. Chocolate Ganache Meringue Meringues are a light but indulgent treat at any time, and this chocolate version makes a delicious and decadent desert that’s easy to make and popular with the whole family.

/E'Z / Ed^ For the Meringues 3 egg whites 165g caster sugar 1 tablespoon cocoa For the Filling 375ml double cream 1 tablespoon icing sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla essence extra cocoa, for dusting For the Ganache 100g dark chocolate 125ml double cream 1 egg, beaten

Preheat the oven to 120°C/100°C fan.

Line three baking trays with baking paper; draw an 8cm x 25cm rectangle on each piece of paper, turn paper over.

Beat egg whites in a small bowl until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar, beating until dissolved between additions.

Fold in sifted cocoa.

Spread mixture evenly over rectangles.

Bake 45 minutes or until firm. Cool in oven with the door ajar.

To make the ganache: Combine chocolate and cream in a small saucepan; stir over a low heat until smooth.

Meanwhile, beat cream, icing sugar and vanilla in a small bowl until soft peaks form.

ore people in Britain are celebrating their 100th birthdays than ever before. We all hope to lead long and healthy lives but it is important to plan for our future needs and to put measures in place to ensure we can be looked after in the event of illness. When most people think of making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) they are concerned to ensure that someone can look after their financial affairs for them if they are unable to do so themselves. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Property and Affairs is the appropriate document to authorise these kind of decisions and it is certainly sensible to make one. It takes approximately four months to make an LPA so it is important to make one well in advance of you actually needing your Attorneys to act for you. If you wish your Attorneys to have wider powers however over your health and welfare, you need to make a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare. It is important to understand that your Attorneys have no power to make decisions under such an LPA

unless you are unable to make those decisions yourself. This is where it differs from a LPA for Property and Affairs. So, for example your Attorneys would have power to make decisions over your day to day care and may be granted power to give or to refuse consent to medical treatment perhaps for major surgery or organ transplant. You can include restrictions on the powers available to your Attorneys or guidance to help them exercise their powers in the way that you would want them to. Remember they have no powers while you retain capacity – they are there to represent you when you do not. What happens if I lose capacity and have not made a Lasting Power of Attorney? The only option available to your loved ones is to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputy to be appointed. This is an expensive and bureaucratic procedure which may take six months or more at a stressful time when swift action may be required. The Court of Protection will appoint your Deputy whereas you

can choose your Attorneys yourself when you make an LPA and then specify what powers they are to have. This is surely preferable to having the Court of Protection choose your Deputy and the powers they can exercise on your behalf. Making an LPA r You should think carefully as to who you wish to appoint as your Attorneys and the powers you wish to give them, you must be able to trust them implicitly to act in your best interest. r Do you want to give them power over your financial affairs, your health and welfare or both? r You should discuss the process with your nearest and dearest to ensure they are prepared to take on the role(s) you are entrusting them with. r Take specialist legal advice from a solicitor. There are various options available and safeguards built into the process which we would be happy to talk over with you.

The Bowen Technique can help with Knee Problems by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DipM

In this article, I share with you some information concerning the knee and the things I do in practice to treat the many problems associated with the knee joint and its supporting structures. I also share some self-help tips for you to try.

The anatomy of the knee joint The knee joints function is to permit the flexion and extension of the lower leg relative to the thigh while supporting the body’s weight. Movements at the knee joint are essential to everyday activities, including walking, running, sitting and standing. The knee is a synovial hinge joint formed between three bones: the femur, tibia, and patella. Two rounded, convex processes (known as condyles) on the distal end of the femur meet two rounded, concave condyles at the proximal end of the tibia. The patella lies in front of the femur on the anterior surface of the knee with its smooth joint-forming processes on its posterior surface facing the femur. 78

The joint-forming surfaces of each bone are covered with a thin layer of hyaline cartilage that gives them an extremely smooth surface and protects the underlying bone from damage. Between the femur and tibia is the meniscus a tough fibrocartilage acting as a shock absorber inside the knee to prevent the collision of the leg bones during strenuous activities. The patella is held in place by the patellar ligament, which extends from the inferior border of the patella to the tibial tuberosity of the tibia. There are several other ligaments that support the functioning of the knee joint these include; the oblique popliteal ligament, arcuate popliteal ligament, medial collateral ligament (MCL),

and the lateral collateral ligament (LCL). There are also two internal ligaments – the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments (ACL & PCL). These help to maintain the proper alignment of the knee. In addition to the joint capsule and ligaments that support the knee, there are also several important structures surrounding the knee that help cushion and protect the joint. The Bowen Knee Procedure The Bowen knee procedure works with the whole body in how is supports the knee joint and the knee’s supporting structures. In the procedure we address the Vastus Lateralis muscle which supports the Patella,

the Patella itself is also worked with and the Vastus Medialis muscle which also supports the Patella and specific ligaments. The Gastrocnemius muscles are addressed which help drain any fluid on and around the knee and help to ease cramping in the lower leg and calves. Lastly, we address the Tibial Nerve and Neurovascular bundle on the ankle. After the Bowen knee procedure, we recommend that clients do not heat, massage or exercise for one week. We also recommend that that any swelling or fluid on the knee is drawn off using soda crystals. In a session, I would show you some exercises for the knee joint as appropriate and I might also advise you on remedies that could help with symptoms. Self-help for the knee Self-help Exercise The aim of this exercise is to strengthen and stabilise the quadriceps and cruciate ligaments. Never exercise with a swollen or inflamed knee. Position: Sit well back on a bench or table with the thighs supported by the table and the feet hanging free. Exercise: Place a light weight (a packet of rice) on the dorsal aspect of the ankle and slowly Ledbury Focus

raise the lower leg. Take the knee almost to full extension. Repeat 5 - 10 times. Watch for the quads to quiver, the muscles need to exhibit this point of quiver status so adjust the weight to achieve this. If the muscles quiver or shake before five repeats the foot is carrying too much weight so adjust accordingly. Do this exercise on both sides, even if you are only addressing injuries to one side of the body. Soda Crystal pack Using a soda crystal pack is invaluable for any joint where there is fluid present. Simply wrap some soda crystals in a handkerchief and make a pad to be placed on the joint just below the patella. Use tape or a bandage to hold the pad in place and leave on over night or for at least 4 hours. (never put the crystals directly onto the skin). When the pack is taken off the crystals will be solid as they should have drained off the excess fluid on the joint. Support Using a support when undertaking activities that put a direct strain on the knee can be useful in some cases. It should be mentioned however that if serious injury is present here, anything that puts a strain on the joint or the supporting structures should generally be avoided.
