I hope you all had a lovely Easter, with lots of hot cross buns and Easter Eggs! Now that the warmer weather is with us, if you are looking for something to do at the weekends, Eastnor Pottery have lots to offer, so have a look at page 22 to find out more. Both Ledbury and Eastnor Bowling Clubs are having open days, so if you prefer an outdoor activity in good company, why not go along and join in the fun. If you are planning on 'tying the knot' in the near future, then dont' miss the Wedding Fayre at The Colwall Park Hotel later this month. After all the rain we've had recently, if your lawn is anything like mine, it needs some serious "TLC", and Jonathan Bishop at Foliation has lots of hints and tips for getting your lawn back in shape. They are all a variation on a theme and usually involve you disclosing your bank details or purchasing something with your credit /debit card. Either way the scammer gets your card details and security codes and then starts pretending to be YOU and buys lots of expensive things on your card. Reputable companies don’t sell this way. If you are in doubt, do not buy anything over the telephone. Always report these calls to the police. Please can you pass this message onto any elderly 14

OR via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. Police rural crime operations continue. West Mercia Police, working with Dyfed Powys Police, continued a joint policing operation. These night time patrols recently resulted in two arrests and dozens of vehicles stopped. Operations will continue over the spring months! Lock doors and windows to prevent sneak thieves helping themselves whilst you are busy in the garden. Two offences of this type happened during early March.

West Mercia Police Chief Constable David Shaw Announces Retirement West Mercia Police Chief Constable, David Shaw has announced his intention to retire on 31st July 2016. David started his career more than thirty years ago in West Midlands Police rising to the rank of Assistant Chief Constable before joining West Mercia Police in 2008 as Deputy Chief Constable. In August 2011 he was appointed Chief Constable. On announcing his retirement , David said: "It has been an extraordinary privilege to have been part of two teams looking after the communities of West Midlands and West Mercia policing areas. Even after 36 years as a police officer, it is impossible to describe the sense of pride and admiration for what officers and staff achieve every single day. Their courage, humanity and desire to do the right thing remain inspiring. The 8 years I have had with West Mercia have been amongst the toughest but also happiest of my service. The successes we have delivered together have only been possible with the outstanding support of colleagues of every role and rank, the energy, skill and tenacity of the Chief Officer Team, my colleagues in Warwickshire Police and of course Bill Longmore, the Police and Crime Commissioner. I will be leaving with a feeling of genuine affection for this force, the people I work with and the area I serve. While I will make sure that I get the chance to say my goodbyes to a whole range of people over the coming months, I just want to take this opportunity to thank the hundreds of friends, colleagues and partners who have helped me in so many ways over so many years. In the meantime though, there is a force to lead, there is work to be done and of course I need to prepare the force for my successor and the new Police and Crime Commissioner". orking with clay engages mind, body and soul!

If you’ve never done it before, making a pot on the potter’s wheel is both incredibly satisfying and therapeutic. In order to achieve a ‘good pot’, the activity demands total concentration, so much so, there is little capacity to dwell on anything other than the mud in hand. All the ‘other stuff ’ fizzing around in your head dissolves away, and participants regularly comment on a sense of well-being and relaxation. Combined with the sheer pride and joy of having created something by hand, this makes for a valuable experience in a culture dominated by screens and gadgets. We have been offering remarkable clay and pottery experiences for over 20 years, not only from our idyllic studio on the Eastnor Castle Estate, but all over the 22

West Midlands and beyond. Our clay sessions are carefully designed to explore and develop creativity in participants of all ages and abilities. The variety and extent of our services is impressive and we pride ourselves on our ability to work with anybody. You don’t have to be part of a large group or gathering to enjoy our workshops. In the past couple of years we have developed a menu of competitively priced, technique based projects for families and individuals. You can book a session and make a single pot on the potter’s wheel for as little as £10. These have proved very popular with locals and visitors alike. In fact, this is our most rapidly growing area of engagement – particularly since BBC2’s Great British Throw Down programme hit our screens in the autumn of last year. ur dogs and cats are starting to enjoy themselves out and about now the daffodils are up! Whilst fleas are a problem all the year around, ticks tend to be a problem in the spring and summer time. Ticks can be especially prevalent in the Malvern and Eastnor areas due to the rough foliage and bracken. However, they are just as likely to be found in your back garden! Various preventions are available against ticks. Some of the older preparations have been quite poor in efficacy. We do however have quite an effective collar against ticks, as well as new effective spot-on preparations. We are offering large discounts for these treatments over the next 2-3 months. Please contact us for advice or pre-ordering, and be tick free!

Spring is finally in the air ... treated for ticks and 135 ticks dropped off this one dog! Some of the older preparations have been quite poor. We do have quite an effective collar available called “Seresto� which last for 7 months, and is extremely effective in preventing ticks. There are also some effective spot on preparations, and there has just recently been launched a tablet which will prevent fleas and ticks for up to 3 months. Please contact us for advice as it is difficult to know which product to use for different animals, as not one product does every single parasite and what

kills ticks might not necessary kill mites and worms etc. Microchipping is also a big importance this month due to the law being enforced on 6th April for all dogs in the UK to be microchipped and we are still offering 20% off for all customers. It is important your correct contact details are updated with the chipping database, in case your pet does go missing. You can pop into the surgery to check if your dog is microchipped and then call the appropriate company to check your details are up to date.

Ticks are free living parasites which recognise a warm blooded animal and jump onto it, they then latch on and suck their blood. They can cause irritations and localised infections, but they can sometimes carry diseases such as Lyme disease. Ticks are very prevalent; we had one dog this week which we Ledbury Focus

A similar size to a pigeon, the cuckoo is blue-grey with dark bars running across its white underside. They have a sleek body, long tail and pointed wings. Males and females are similar though only the males have the distinctive ‘coo-coo’ call, while the females have a babbling call. The cuckoo is a brood parasite, which means it lays its eggs in the nests of other bird species, usually a much smaller songbird such as a reed warbler, meadow pipit, dunnock or robin. When the

cuckoo egg hatches, the emerging chick will push the other eggs out of the nest then grow fast and strong as the foster parent continues to feed just this one chick, soon dwarfing the small foster parent. Caterpillars and other insects such as beetles and ants form the major part of the Cuckoo's diet. Many of the caterpillars they eat – often those that are hairy and brightly coloured – are poisonous but they shake out the toxins before eating them. Good Beginnings but Help Needed The new year started well with an entertaining evening with Quentin Letts in January. February saw the fourth in our series with Rob Elliott and Sally Dean on what’s happening to our food. At the time of writing, we are arranging our April AGM. We’re waiting to hear if Jesse Norman MP, Culture Secretary, and Bill Wiggin, MP will accept our invitation to talk on the future of the library service. This is still under threat as the government continues to cut back on local government funding. Our work with Joint Action for Herefordshire Libraries and council officers goes on to help protect the future of our Library. For the last two years Robert Waddington has joined me in these meetings. He now needs to focus on the future of the Master’s House which means he’s had to step down from the LLDG. Very many thanks to Robert for all his help. It takes two of us to do this work effectively and we need someone to join me. If you care passionately about the future of our Library, and can spare about 6 to 8 hours a month to attend meetings, please get in touch. Creating Your Garden Paradise ĂƌƟĐůĞ ďLJ :ŽŶĂƚŚĂŶ ŝƐŚŽƉ

he season has now kicked off and it is time to start looking at lawns. Obviously the most important thing, if not already done so, is to make sure the light is getting to the lawns and any old leaves and dead vegetation from the previous year are removed.

After the leaves have been on it for such a long time, to help stimulate new growth, aeration is ideally needed. The easiest way to do this is with a fork and ‘fork’ holes, as often as possible, all over the lawn. This allows air down to the roots and also moisture down to the roots. When a lawn has been walked on for a period of time it becomes very compacted, so this process will allow the roots and the plants breathe more.

If you have any unnecessary bumps before the growing season kicks off, i.e. anthills, you can repair them by raking out and then using a roller to go over the top. Autumn Again this is a good time to add lawn weed and feed. This helps to

put goodness into the roots ready to survive the winter, but bear in mind to keep all leaves and any furniture, etc. off the lawn as much as possible so you don’t have any dead patches in the following spring. Mowing techniques It is always useful to mow round the outside twice first, and round any obstacles. Then take a straight line from the most viewed point, i.e. a door or window, out through the centre of the lawn and then work to the corners, going up and down. That way, if you are creating stripes, if there are any off-cuts off stripes they will be in the corners and it will also make your lawn look nice and level rather than it going off at an angle. I also recommend occasionally you change the direction of the stripes so that you don’t get any ruts in the lawn from the wheels of the mower if you repeatedly do the same stripes each time.

Common weeds There are a lot of weeds in lawns: dandelions, thistles, wild grass, greater plantain and creeping buttercup, daisies - these are all weeds that you would find in a normal standard lawn. Some of these weeds are easy to keep on top of by extracting the root, digging them out and stopping them from spreading. The secret is really to stop them from seeding, so by regular mowing this will also help. Other trickier ones, the lawn weed and feed treatment should take out at the beginning and end of the year. However, if you can stop anything from deep rooting or weeds like daisies becoming a clump as they send runners out and get wider, the same applies to creeping buttercup, if you can stop them creeping then you will ensure that your lawn will become less patchy and less weedy almost instantly for very little effort. A Call for Sites Ledbury Town Council along with Ledbury residents are currently working on a Neighbourhood Plan – a planning policy document which will help shape future development in and around Ledbury. As part of the Ledbury Neighbourhood Plan the Town Council is undertaking a Call for Sites to identify potential sites for development. A key function of the Ledbury Neighbourhood Plan could be to allocate specific sites for development e.g. for residential, employment, community or recreational uses. If you have a site that you would wish to be considered for inclusion as an allocated site within the Ledbury Neighbourhood Plan then you should submit the site to the Call for Sites. Submitted sites will be reviewed against general planning principles by neighbourhood plan consultants Foxley Tagg, with sites scored with regard to suitability for development. The results of the site reviews will be reported to the Town Council so that they may understand the extent of local development potential. The Town Council will then identify some preferred sites for allocation which will be put to the community for consultation. id you know that there have been over 99,500 Visitors to The Masters House and Ledbury Library since it opened a year ago!

This was just one of the impressive statistics available for the community to learn about during the open day held to celebrate the first anniversary. In addition there have been 685 new members and a huge 53,100 items borrowed and reserved for members. The cultural and social activities have proved increasingly popular and heritage events have resulted in more than 500 people participating in tours organised by the Friends of the Library. The Masters House community offers so much to the public through its customer services and has gone from strength to strength since the move from the Barrett Browning Institute last year.

After a rousing rendition of “happy birthday� sung by all those present for the first birthday, Librarian Rachel Lambert said “Everyone here at The Masters House is thrilled that our first year has been such a success! The library team are delighted with the enormous number of new members, customer services are happily run off their feet with enquiries and the heritage and events programme is going from strength to strength. Quick & Easy Moussaka Using diced aubergine instead of the traditional slices makes for a quick and easy midweek version of this classic Greek dish. Make the most of the new potatoes in season this month.

METHOD z

Preheat oven to 200°C/Gas Mark 6..

z

Bring a pan of slightly salted water to the the boil. Add the potatoes and cook until tender. Drain and set aside.

z

In a large frying pan, heat the oil, then add the minced lamb and onion. Cook, stirring frequently, until the lamb is browned and the onions soft.

z

Add the aubergines, turn up the heat to high, and cook for a further 3-4 minutes.

z

Sprinkle in the cinnamon, season to taste with salt and pepper, then add the tomatoes, stock and herbs. Stir well, cover, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes.

900g baby new potatoes, halved 2 tablespoons olive oil 500g lean minced lamb 2 onions, finely chopped 2 aubergines, roughly chopped ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon salt and pepper to season 400g can chopped tomatoes 100ml lamb or vegetable stock ½ teaspoon dried mixed herbs 1 tablespoon cornflour 225ml milk 1 egg, beaten 75g Cheddar cheese, grated

In a small pan, combine the cornflour and 2 tablespoons of the milk until blended to a paste. Add the rest of the milk and bring to the boil on a medium heat, stirring until thickened. Cook for a further 3 minutes, stirring constantly.

Remove from the heat, beat in the egg, then season with salt and pepper.

z

Spread the meat mixture evenly across the bottom of a shallow baking dish. Place the potato halves on top, round side down. Pour over the sauce, then top with the grated cheese.

z

Place in the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes, until the sauce bubbles and the cheese is golden brown.

Serves 4

Serve immediately with a fresh green salad.

The bowling club will be holding 3 open days this year on Saturday 16th April, Sunday 8th May and Saturday 11th June, between 11am and 4pm. We welcome members of the public to come along and join us to have a go at this sport which is becoming increasingly popular with young and old alike. 2015 was a successful year for us at the Club with several members qualifying for the bowls England National Championships, and our youngest member, Tom Holmes at the age of 15, was crowned as National Under 18 Singles Champion and has since gone on to Play for England in an Under 18 Test Series against Wales. We are a friendly club and welcome all ages and abilities to come and have a game with us. All you need to try the sport is a pair of flat shoes or trainers, we have equipment that you can borrow and members on hand to instruct you.

Right to Rent Since 1st February 2016, landlords letting private rented accommodation must complete a 'right to rent check' for new tenants using the property as their main home. This means checking that tenants (which may include lodgers in certain circumstances) have the right to live in the UK before allowing them to rent the property. The penalty for failing to carry out the check is up to £3,000 per tenant. If a tenant's permission to stay in the UK is time limited, landlords can be fined if they do not make further checks before the expiry date or 12 months after the first check. Terminating a Tenancy For any Assured Shorthold Tenancy (AST) granted on or after 1st October 2015, landlords should be aware they cannot give a tenant a formal notice to terminate the AST (known as a Section 21 Notice) if the tenant has not been given the gas safety record and the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for the property. Landlords are responsible for ensuring an annual gas safety check is carried out within 12 months of the installation of a new appliance or flue (supplied by the landlord) and annually thereafter by a Gas Safe Registered

engineer. Landlords must keep a record of the safety check for 2 years and issue a copy to each existing tenant within 28 days of the check being completed and issue a copy to any new tenants before they move in. Protect Against Property Fraud Analysis of fraud cases shows that a house owner who leaves a property unoccupied, perhaps because they live abroad, is at higher risk of fraud, as is a landlord whose tenant may use their access to the property and its utility accounts to commit fraud. Mortgage free properties are often targeted as a registered mortgage creates an extra hurdle for fraudsters. There are various simple steps which can be taken to protect your property against fraud: 1. Keep your contact details at HM Land Registry up to date. You can register up to 3 addresses at the Land Registry including an email address. If the Land Registry has a suspicion about an application affecting your property then they will notify you using your contact details. 2. A restriction can be entered on the deeds to the property requiring extra identity checks to be carried out and confirmed to the Land Registry by a conveyancer before

any transfer of the property can be registered. 3. Sign up to The Property Alert service provided by the Land Registry. This is a free service which allows individuals to register up to 10 properties by signing up online and providing an email address. If an application is lodged which affects one of the properties you have registered then the Land Registry will notify you which allows you to monitor for suspicious activity. You do not have to be the owner of the property in order to register it on your account so, for example, you may use the system to keep an eye on the property of an elderly relative. Stamp duty At the time of writing, it is proposed that Stamp Duty Land Tax will increase from 1st April 2016 on the purchase of a buy to let property or a second home. This will affect anyone purchasing a property who already owns one or more properties anywhere else in the world. An exception may apply to those who are replacing their 'main residence' but there are rules surrounding this. It is important to obtain advice at an early stage to ensure you are budgeting correctly for your proposed purchase.

Effective Treatment for Allergies & Intolerances ďLJ ,ĞůĞŶ DĂǁƐŽŶ͕ ^Đ ,ŽŶƐ͕ ŝƉD

Many people suffer from problems caused by allergies or intolerance. For some these problems can be life threatening, for most people, however, the symptoms are miserable and tiresome.

A

llergic reactions occur when a person is exposed to or ingests a substance or food that the body does not recognise. An immune response is triggered which is the reaction people experience as an allergy. With a true allergy, the person responds to any amount of the substance. Intolerance, on the other hand, occurs when an individual is exposed to a certain amount of the offending substance or food, too much for their body to handle which tips the balance. Stress levels affect intolerance greatly if a person is very busy and under pressure their tolerance levels will be low. On the other hand, tolerance will be high when a person is relaxed and balanced. You may have experienced this on holidays when you eat things that would normally cause a

problem for you but because you are relaxed and stress-free no problem occurs. Typical allergy/intolerance symptoms include: a runny nose, streaming eyes, itching, sneezing and rashes. Hidden allergies could also be causing problems for you and could be the root cause of other health issues such as arthritis, PMS, IBS, digestive disturbances, weight loss/gain, eczema, asthma, migraine and fibroids to name but a few. Causes of allergies/intolerance include: foods such as wheat and dairy. A good indication of an allergy or intolerance is when you constantly crave certain foods. Grass and tree pollen are common allergens and cause hay fever which is miserable for lots of people during the summer months. Chemicals

around the home or workplace could also be causing problems as could airborne substances such as moulds. Other allergens may be more complex. Help yourself Book a Bowen treatment A technique I use a lot when treating clients with hay fever and allergies is called the TMJ short for temporomandibular joint. The technique helps to balance the jaw and its alignment with the skull. Often disruption in this joint results after dentistry, damage to other areas of the spine, compensation, stress and tension and a multitude of other reasons. When the TMJ is out of balance all sorts of problems can result such as hay fever, allergies, eye problems, ear problems, headaches, migraines, sinus problems, congestion, asthma, dizziness and the list goes on. generally suggest that individuals have some treatment at least a month before the hay fever season begins. I have experienced some remarkable results using this technique and the sinus procedure for people suffering from seasonal allergies. Quercetin, which is a plant flavonoid, is one of these that has been known to reduce allergic reactions especially hay fever and asthma. reaction. Other supplements would include natural antiinflammatories such as essential fatty acids and curcumin in turmeric supplements. Eat more organic Organic foods that are free from chemicals tend to be easier to eat and assimilate for those people suffering from allergies. Wash fruit & vegetables Chemical residue and moulds on fruit and vegetables build in the time between fruit and vegetables being picked and packed, and this can cause problems for some people. Avoid processed foods Wheat and dairy products often cause problems for people. The reason you can't lose weight

T

here are few things more frustrating than not being able to lose weight. You want to be slimmer and to tone your body, but your weight won’t budge. Read the following 7 Weight Loss Blockers to discover what is standing in your way and how to quickly and easily begin your weight loss journey. Blocker 1: Your Mind Your mind is your number one ally when it comes to achieving your goals. However, until your mind has been programmed for success, it will do more to derail your efforts than to help you. r Take a few moments each day to visualise yourself at your ideal weight. Imagine how it feels to look the way you’ve always wanted. r Protect your mind from any negative self talk. If a negative thought comes to mind, immediately reject it. r You want to be thin and fit, and yet you think of yourself as out-of-shape and fat. Re-programme your mind to think of yourself as fit and attractive, and you will be well on your way toward achieving your goal. r Give up the belief that you can’t achieve the body you’ve always 74

dreamed of. See it first in your mind, and then in the mirror. Blocker 2: Your Fear Change makes most of us nervous, even if it is a change in the right direction. You may not be consciously aware of the fear you have of getting into shape. Until you conquer this fear, your weight loss efforts will be blocked by self sabotage. Professional speaker and author, Anthony Robbins, has outlined three specific beliefs that you must have in order to conquer your fear and instantly create a lasting change. r Believe that something MUST change. You can’t be wishy-washy about it. You can’t be considering it. You can’t even be pretty sure about it. You’ve got to be rock solid. r Believe that YOU must change it. You can’t pass the buck of responsibility and expect to lose weight. It’s on your shoulders. Other people will prove to be great assets in your journey, but in the end you are the one who is going to make it happen. You have to want this weight loss enough to make it your personal mission. r Believe you CAN change it. You may have failed in the past, but that doesn’t matter. When you put your mind to it, you’re able to do

amazing things. Do you believe that you are capable of losing weight? Once you own the belief that you can, you’ll be unstoppable. Blocker 3: Your Excuses Your excuses for being out-of-shape are getting old. An excuse takes less immediate effort than an action, but in the long run the action taker always has the advantage. Don’t allow excuses to ruin your life any longer. r Don’t skip out on your responsibilities with excuses, instead expect more from yourself. r Focus on the big reason why you are losing the weight. Make a list of the benefits you’ll enjoy once you achieve your goal, and read them first thing each morning. r Remember that you can only have two things in life: excuses or results. Which do you want? Blocker 4: Your Commitment How many times have you tried to lose weight, only to give up a week or two later? We live in a commitmentphobic world, so it’s no wonder that you routinely abandon your goals. If you truly want to lose weight then your commitment to the process is a must. r The margin between success and failure is bridged by your commitment. Cut these items out of your diet and replace them with real whole foods like lean meats, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and fruits. r Don’t eat processed foods. Even though processed foods are accepted by our society, they contain tons of chemicals and empty calories that will make you sick and fat. r Fat contains twice the caloric density of protein and carbohydrates, so make sure to limit the amount that you consume.
