adfield Home Care has established branches across the UK with an office now open in Ledbury. Radfield Home Care is a specialist Elderly Home Care provider, caring for the maturing community who wish to remain living independently in their own homes. Radfield Home Care has a unique ethos and exceptional core values: we are family, we are proud to care, and we are on your side. Radfield believe passionately that
by treating their carer’s as trusted family members that this then empowers them to treat their clients with the same warmth and respect. Radfield Home Care is proud to care for its maturing community, and it is our belief and passion that our clients should be cared for in the same loving and caring way that we would want for our own loved ones. Kiain McKean, Director of Radfield Home Care Herefordshire and
South Shropshire, has 26 years’ experience working in the healthcare sector, and for many years wanted to have his own home care company. Kiain’s desire to have his own home care company was ignited after his grandmother experienced poor quality care in her home. In honour of his grandmother Kiain accepted the opportunity to take on the Radfield Home Care franchise, in order to provide high quality care services for those wishing to remain living independently in their own homes within the Herefordshire and South Shropshire areas.
For over 35 years we have been providing a level of care & support for our clients that we expect for our own family. We will work with you and your family to deliver a service that responds to your needs and adapts to your life.

Summer is now well and truly with us, and the children are on holiday, so no doubt many of you will be heading to sunnier climes for your holidays. Have a wonderful time, and don't forget your sunscreen! Having just returned from ten wonderful days in Malta, I can highly recommend it as a holiday destination - the weather is perfect, the food fabulous, the people extremely welcoming, and . . . they drive on the correct (left!) side of the road! If you are staying at home this year, there are plenty of things happening this month, in particular, the art world is very active with several events coming up. Bradfords are having a Hog Roast in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, and as we are early this month with the magazine, there's time to remind you again about the Welland Steam Fair at the end of July. Also if you are staying at home, do take a minute to read the West Mercia Police article on page 56 which gives lots of tips on how to enjoy the summer - safely! That's all for now, so until next month, keep happy and healthy, and enjoy this month’s magazine.

alking is a simple, free and easy way to become more active, lose weight and improve your health. Regular walking has many health benefits and can reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke and some cancers. How much walking is enough? The NHS recommends at least 10,000 steps a day. If you don’t have a mobile app or pedometer, it takes approximately 2,100 steps to walk a mile. Pace is important if you want to see health benefits, with a brisk 10 minute walk taking an average of 1,200 steps. A brisk walk is more than a gentle stroll, it means walking fast enough that you notice your heart rate increases, and you start to sweat a little. Walking is also a great way to improve mobility and mental health, spend time in your community and socialise with others.

Set your goals It’s really hard to change your behaviour unless you make a really solid plan. You need to think about how you are going to integrate more walking into your day, and be specific. Decide when, how and for how long, and then build this up as the weeks go by. This way you can see clearly what progress you have made, boost your confidence and keep you motivated. Think about where you would like to walk. Plan your route before you go, and start slowly and don’t overdo it. Here are some ideas to help you start your new healthy walking routine: yy Replace long periods of sitting with short bouts of walking yy Add some extra steps into your routine travel plans yy Get off the bus one stop earlier yy Start with a few short walks each week, gradually increasing the length of your walks. yy Ask friends and neighbours to join you, walking is a great way to catch up yy Wear sturdy and comfortable footwear. Age UK Hereford & Localities are currently looking for volunteers to support our services and help us make a difference to the lives of older people in Ledbury. If you can spare an hour or two a week or month, we would be delighted to hear from you.

yy We work closely with occupational therapists, physiotherapists, GP’s, district nurses, social work teams and other health professionals, to provide the best possible outcomes, by bringing services together. yy We aim to set clear, tangible goals for the future - for the benefit of all. We offer a Talking Books service to our clients in the community: one of our carers co-ordinates DVD`S and tapes for our clients, based on a list of novels; this carer delivers them, collects them, and delivers more, each week. By offering this service our clients say: “This is great for periods when we are alone, allowing us to listen to stories that we miss from not being able to read anymore. It also prevents feelings of boredom and loneliness”. 1st Class Care Services are registered with the Care Quality Commission, and we are very proud to have achieved at our last inspection on 1st March 2017, a “Good Rating” throughout the whole of our service, for a Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well Led Company. The Bowen Technique for Arthritic conditions by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DIpM, BTAA, BAUK
I Contact me for more information I offer a free 15-minute telephone consultations so you can find out more about the therapies I practice and how they could help you.

n this article, I will share with you some information concerning how I use the Bowen Technique to help with arthritic conditions and problems. I also offer some recommendations for exercise and lifestyle changes that may help. Different types of arthritis There are many different types of arthritis, the more commonly known are Osteoarthritis which has a degenerative impact upon the bones and Rheumatoid arthritis which is an autoimmune condition whereby your immune system attacks the cells that line your joints by mistake. This will over time damage the cartilage and the joint itself. Other less common types of arthritis include; psoriatic arthritis, gout, osteoporosis, rheumatism, septic arthritis. Common symptoms of arthritis The most common symptoms of arthritis are pain and inflammation, these vary in severity depending on the individual, their health, diet and lifestyle. Other symptoms include; stiffness, swelling, puffiness, redness and decreased range of movement. Less common symptoms can include; tiredness, weight loss or gain, mild fevers and or night sweats, skin rashes, nausea and a general feeling of being unwell. Arthritis can occur in any joint but is typically found in hips, shoulders, neck knees
and the back. Sometimes arthritis will occur at sites of an old injury. How I work with arthritic conditions In practice, every treatment is tailored to the needs of the individual that I am treating, no two bodies are the same and even when presented with similar symptoms specific things are often different for the individual. I always consider the symptoms an individual is experiencing and look at the best possible procedures that I have to use with a client. In Bowen we have procedures that address from top to toe so if pain and deterioration is being experienced in the hips for example we would use the pelvic procedure. If pain is being experienced in the shoulders we would use the shoulder procedure, similarly, if pain and or deterioration was being experienced in the knee this would indicate the knee procedure. I will generally also look at nutrition for an individual if this is relevant and explore options for limiting certain foods that might be making symptoms worse and increasing the foods that will help calm symptoms. Holistic treatment The body systems and parts that make up the whole work synergistically, each one is responsible for its own function but has to cooperate with the whole unit in order for the body to function at its optimum. If one of
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
the systems is out of balance it will impact the other systems. The body always does its best however and works hard to maintain its homeostasis or balance.
FP
The way in which Bowen works is truly holistic it always looks to achieve the best balance for the body as a whole and in the most efficient way possible. In practice, I find it common for clients to experience improvement in other areas of health even when a session focused on treating a specific problem.
‘UP
When we consider the fact that Bowen works directly with the nervous system specifically affecting the nerves along the vertebral column we can see how a multifaceted response is often experienced. A lot of the Bowen work is also carried out over specific energy systems such as the meridians and chakra systems adding yet another dimension to treatment. Bowen also works directly with fascia which probably needs an article of its own to discuss further! Lifestyle factors to help with arthritis yy Hydration is vital to the balance of the body. I have known clients begin taking more water and the painful muscles that have plagued them for years have got better virtually overnight! yy Posture is very important the body needs plenty of variation, so if you work in a seated position have plenty of breaks and get up stretch or even have a short walk. Make sure your desk is set up properly for you including desk and chair height and position. A good tip to remember when you are sitting is that your knees should be lower than your hips. yy Exercise is important in supporting structural health and getting enough appropriate exercise for your specific body type and health requirements are essential. Some of my favourite exercises include; walking, swimming, yoga or gentle stretching, pilates and rebounding on a mini trampoline (my personal favourite!) yy Nutrition is vital to support the body in general but especially when dealing with specific conditions. I have fund in general that arthritic conditions respond well to certain supplements such as magnesium, sometimes more calcium, vit D and remedies such as rosehip, glucosamine. In a session I would test the individual to see what would specifically help them the most. yy Bowen in my experience is a great therapy to help with the symptoms of arthritis in most of it’s forms. The main reason I believe it to be so successful is that it treats the whole body and has an impact on the nervous system and the fascia. Ledbury Focus

here has been a history of quarrying in Herefordshire stretching back several centuries including the igneous rocks of the Malvern Hills, limestone in the Woolhope Dome, sand and gravel along the Wye Valley and suballuvial gravels in the Lugg Valley. Today, the exposed rock of the exhausted quarries may at first glance appear barren but in fact creates a distinctive wildlife habitat which particularly suits some species.

These lakes are important sites for wetland fauna and flora, including a variety of breeding, migrant and overwintering birds, wetland plants and amphibians. The floodplain of the River Lugg has a particularly high density of gravel pit sites and the Lugg Valley is becoming a fantastic wetland landscape. Wildlife to spot The rock faces of hard rock quarries provide a valuable and unique habitat for many invertebrates, birds and plant life.
Peregrine falcons, whose natural habitat is cliff faces often nest on abandoned quarry sites. Where quarries have turned into lakes, these can attract both breeding birds such as great crested grebe, reed warbler and oyster catcher and little ringed plover as well as migrant birds stopping to rest and feed such as widgeon and osprey Where to find them yy Bodenham Lake Gravel was extracted from this site between the late 1800s and 1980s but Bodenham Lake Nature Reserve is now a picturesque nature reserve,

Pesky Fleas & Troublesome Ticks The warmer weather is upon us, which means we are out walking our dogs more, and our cats are out exploring in the sunshine. It also means that external parasites (fleas and ticks) are more prevalent.
Parasite Prevention & Travel Advice preventative treatment regime and regular grooming of your pet will help with early detection and treatment. Please contact the surgery for appropriate advice on treatment and prevention.
Did you know that only 5% of a flea problem is found on your pet? The remaining 95% is around your house. A single female flea can lay up to 1,500 eggs on a monthly basis. Once these eggs hatch into larvae, they will move away from the light and go deeper into you carpets, between floorboards and under the furniture. These larvae will change into pupae which if left untreated can survive dormant in the environment, without a pet, for up to one year. We are seeing an increasing number of patients at the surgery that are being pestered by these external parasites. There are several effective ways of preventing and treating fleas and ticks, including spot-ons, collars and a very effective tablet that gives three months protection. A strict Ledbury Focus
Travelling Abroad – What you need to know The Pet Travel Scheme was introduced to keep the UK free from rabies and other exotic diseases. It allows pet dogs, cats and ferrets to enter the UK from recognised countries without the need for quarantine, as long as they meet certain rules. The scheme also allows UK pet owners to travel with their dogs, cats and ferrets to other countries.
It is very important to discuss the control of both internal (worms) and external parasites with your vet prior to travelling aboard with your pet. For up-to-date information, please take a look at the DEFRA website. We would be happy to advise you on the process involved with getting your pet a passport or the treatments required prior to travel. Please contact the surgery for appropriate advice.
Changes in the Pet Travel Scheme mean that it is now even easier to get your pets their own passport so that they can go on holiday with you. They are required to have a registered microchip, vaccination against Rabies and a pet passport.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
Bugs & Pests
IN YOUR GARDEN
W
ith all the nice weather over the last few months pests are flourishing and are becoming more obvious. Many people come to me with a pest, because apart from trying to flick through books till they hit on a photo that looks the same, they have no other way to identify it. The way I was taught all those years ago at Pershore Horticultural College, was to look first, as a lot of pests are named (common names) because of what they look like or
40
what plant they are on. For example greenfly are green! Woolly aphid has a waxy wool-like covering over them. Others are named because of the plants they are on rather than their looks, such as the lily beetle which is bright red, or Solomon’s seal sawfly (Solomon’s seal is the plant) which is a grey caterpillar-like larvae that can strip the plant in a matter of days, leaving only the parts that are too tough for them to digest. Using this method first will save hours of looking through photos on the internet.
How best to control them There are many ways, from chemical to organic. Here are a few pointers that might help.: yy Some people believe in just leaving them be, and where possible I would agree. However, the Solomon’s seal sawfly for example, would mean you would never see the plant as every year it would be attacked. yy Organically there are a few things that can be sprayed which are natural deterrents, or there are plants you can put with other plants, such as planting garlic and chives next to carrots will mask the smell of the carrots and help prevent carrot fly. yy Pick the pests off. This is fine but very time consuming, and if you’re a keen gardener you would need to check every few days as catching a pest early means easier control or less chemicals to use. To give you an example: an aphid can become a reproducing adult (no male needed) in a week and then can produce up to 5 offspring per day for up to 30 days. So they can multiply very fast. yy The most active deterrent is chemical and there are many
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
varieties on the market. It is always cheaper to buy the concentrated form and mix this up yourself; be sure to read the label as there are two forms: contact and systemic. Without going into too much detail, the main points are: contact kills bugs on contact, which is fine if there are only a few which are not likely to come back. Systemic on the other hand, kills bugs that feed off the plants they are on and are in hard to reach places - under leaves for example. This then is taken into the plant so that each time a bug fancies a nibble, the chemical is in the plant ready to do its thing. Jobs in the garden for August: yy Dead-head bedding plants to keep them flowering right up to the end of the year. yy Dead-head lilies for a better flower display next year as more goodness goes back into the bulb rather than into seed. yy Trim your lavender plants after
they have finished flowering to keep them compact as they do not sprout well on brown wood. yy Cut back faded perennials to keep borders tidy this will give some a second flowering time and stop some from seeding everywhere. yy As your penstemon flowers fade, cut them back to just above a leaf to encourage more flowers.
yy Collect ripened seed and store for next year. Leaving some seed heads in place can be attractive and allows the plant to self-seed in the surrounding soil. yy Take photos so you know where herbaceous plants are when they die back and how full your bed is, as it is easy to forget and buy more!
yy Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flourish of tasty leaves that you can harvest before the frost. yy Prune summer flowering shrubs once they have finished blooming. yy Prune your wisteria after flowering by removing all the whippy side-shoots from the main branch framework to about 20cm from their base (about five leaves from the main stem). yy Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they've finished flowering (unless they are repeat-flowerers in which case leave them).

Big-Hearted People Donate Big Money For Charity

edbury’s former Mayor, Debbie Baker wanted to support local charities during her Mayoral year, one of which was The Madison Shelbie Trust that offers bereavement support with a difference.

Worcester branch of SANDS (Stillbirth & Neo-natal death society) for bereaved parents whose babies have died either before, during or after birth, and was proud to have qualified as a Grief & Bereavement Counsellor.
Through her hard work, and the dedication of her team, Debbie raised the amazing sum of almost £2,200 for the Trust. Debbie said it had been one of the highlights of her year to collect and present this huge amount, donated by bighearted people from around the region and beyond. She commented “We raised the money through various activities, by hosting a quiz, Civic Service, Raft Clothing Charity Event, Muse Cafe fundraising week, charity coffee mornings, donations from Ledbury Arts Society, NDP events, doggie poo bags,
On receiving the cheque, Sam Jones said she was quite overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity from so many unsung heroes!
Her small team, work closely with hospitals and other organisations and Sam hopes eventually to obtain a purpose built premises for her work, but acknowledges this will be costly. She said “If you anyone needs support, or would like to help volunteer for us or would like to donate to us, please contact us via email at madisonsehlbietrust@gmail. com and thank you to everyone who gave to Debbie’s charities.”

Her own shattering experience of losing a child and the crushing grief which followed, inspired Sam to set up the Madison Shelbie Trust, (named in memory of her stillborn baby girl), which offers a wide range of services to help those affected by loss. AUGUST CONCERT Formed in 1998 and holding concerts three times a year, the members of Ledbury Community Choir delight in raising their voices in four part harmony whilst entertaining their audiences and helping to raise funds for local charities. After their successful joint concert with the Swedish choir "Tontamajarna" in May it was decided to embrace the theme of this year's Ledbury Carnival, "A Novel Idea", by basing the music of their August concert on characters from literature. Under the directorship of Malcolm Hughes the performances will range in style and tempo from the cheerfully upbeat The Bare Necessities, the song of Baloo the bear in Kipling's Jungle, through If Ever I Would Leave You from Camelot based on Mort d'Arthur, The Impossible Dream from Don Quixote, Feed The Birds from Mary Poppins and My House from Matilda to This Is the Moment from Jekyll and Hyde and Pure Imagination based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ... and will include many more familiar and also less well known songs for everyone to enjoy.
The concert will be held on the evening of Sunday 27th August at Ledbury Rugby Club, Ross Road, and tickets at £10 can be purchased from Tessa 01531 634630 or Dee 01531 634105 Ledbury Focus

Early Risers
F
ive o’clock on a clear June morning. The human world mostly hasn’t woken up yet. Outside is still; even the dawn chorus seems subdued by the heat. Something stirs. A pheasant is slowly making her way through tall grasses, stopping to shred the seeds from the long stems. She stops, cocks her head to one side, motionless, listening. A plaintiff peeping call comes from deep within the vegetation. She turns, leg raised like a stork and answers back. A flutter of tiny wings and her chick is by her side. She carries on with her search for breakfast, gathering the goodness from around her, her chick staying close - one scare, one adventure enough for now. The hen pheasant has done well to rear one chick, so often they fail, unable to protect their eggs from the nest marauders stalking the woods and fields. Stoats, weasels, foxes, magpies - all wait for their chance. Chicks are lucky to make it. In the same grass another creature nibbles its salad. A young rabbit half hidden rises up on its hind legs, checks all is well, drops down and continues its feast. It’s one of the compost bin trio, perhaps the only survivor. The young rabbit suddenly moves on, rushing across open ground and disappearing to somewhere safe where it can spend the daylight hours until dusk. Maybe it’s headed back to the compost bin, but its birth home has been taken over by a swarm of honey bees. They’ve been busy for several days making their comb, establishing a new colony and storing honey for the winter. On top of the bank where the grass is short another animal is busy with the essential tasks of its day. A bank vole dashes back and forth to a nearby dandelion, scythes down a leaf with is teeth and rushes back to its den with it. Is this a female making a nest for her impending brood? Back it comes for another leaf, urgent in its speed and dedication to the job, returning again until there are no leaves left on the dandelion. Task completed, the bank vole does not re-emerge. Is it settling down to give birth, or has it just re-stocked its larder, or even just made itself more comfortable? A flash of rose pink, a cock bullfinch and its mate are plucking the seeds off the sow thistle so that they look as if they’ve grown bushy white moustaches. A thrush is gathering worms for its newly fledged young and flying off with them to a nearby conifer where there are eager, gaping mouths to fill. Ledbury Art Society
L
edbury Art Society's recent exhibition at the Weaver's Gallery in Church Lane was a great success having started rather slowly. The closing of the High Street for re-surfacing work, had a negative effect on 'foot-fall' for the first three
days but this was countered by the Gallery owner's kind offer to allow a gratis extension of three days in the following week. In total, 540 visitors came through the door and the gallery was particularly busy on Community Day with 157 visitors on that day alone. Seventeen artists exhibited in various mediums including watercolour, oil, pastel, ink and acrylics and 13 paintings and 144 cards were sold in total. The public were asked to vote for their favourite
paintings and the winning artists were Ian Fountaine with 'A Walk in Frith Wood' (left) and Colin Harries for 'Bergen Alleys'. Both artists picture above with their winning pictures. Success can be measured in both sales and visitor numbers, but the overriding measure must be in the many favourable remarks received by those who visited and the positive comments left in the visitor's book.

AUGUST Newsletter £700 donated to Acorns Children's Hospice charity shop following burglary Overnight on the 17th May 2017 Acorns Children's Hospice charity shop in New Street, Ledbury was sadly burgled. The person(s) stole £183 in cash from the safe and caused damage to the shop. West Mercia Police investigated, but in the meantime Police Community Support Officer David Alexander took it upon himself to set up a crowd funding page on Just Giving to try and raise £200 to replace the stolen cash. PCSO Alexander (father of two) regularly donates to this much loved charity shop and often carries out foot patrols in the area. The shop is partly run by local volunteers and is very well supported by the kind residents of Ledbury. PCSO Alexander put out tweets on @LedburyCops with a link to the Just Giving page and Kathryn at Bamboo florists in New Street kindly put a message on a Ledbury Facebook group. Eleven people generously donated and within two weeks the target of £200 was reached. But the good news didn't end there! One Ledbury resident saw the messages on social media and made a very generous £500 charitable donation straight to the shop! This meant a new safe could be purchased and damage caused to the shop could be repaired. PCSO Alexander would like to thank everyone for making a good news story out of this despicable crime. If anybody has any information on the burglary please ring 101 and quote incident 0149S 180517. Acorns Children's Hospice Established in 1988, Acorns Children's Hospice Trust is a registered charity offering a network of care for life-limited and life-threatened babies, children and young people and their families, across the heart of England.

National Road Victim Month National Road Victim Month is held annually in August to remember people that have been killed or injured on our roads. As well as honouring people that have been lost and injured, it is also a great opportunity to raise awareness to make our roads safer. Children in the Summer Holidays August is usually a month of sunshine and summer fun, but it can have a darker side, when it comes to road traffic accidents. This may be your child's first summer in which you have allowed them to go out with their friends. As much as you would like them to apply the Green Cross Code before crossing the road, you can't guarantee their safety when you're not around. During this month, we will see an increased number of children on the streets and a possible increase in irate drivers who are not patient at crossings. It is important to teach your child the proper way to cross the road, but it is equally as important that drivers are aware of the potential dangers around them.
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
Careless and reckless driving can result in an endorsement on your licence, from 3 points to 11 which can stay on your licence for 4 to 11 years. Motorway Drivers Be Aware It's not just children who are at risk over the month of August - many people will be taking holidays around the country and using the motorways to get there. Often the car will be full of luggage, children and sometimes pets. This can be distracting for you as a driver, and may cause harm to yourself, your passengers, and other road users. Try to minimise distractions before you set out on the road by making it clear to other passengers the importance of remaining focussed whilst driving. Taking short breaks to get fresh air and refocus is also recommended when driving over long distances. Deaths and serious injuries are 50% more likely to occur due to driver fatigue.

Hawes Wensleydale
by Andrew Brooks
T
rue Wensleydale cheese, with its roots set firmly in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, is made by the Hawes creamery in Wensleydale itself, and has a heritage spanning centuries.
EASTNOR POTTERY & THE FLYING POTTER
First crafted in the 12th Century, the art of Wensleydale cheese-making was perfected over time, until 1897 when the first creamery was built in Hawes when Wensleydale cheesemaking began on a large scale.
POTTER’S WHEEL EXPERIENCES
Handcrafted and wrapped in muslin cheese cloth, Wensleydale cheese has a mild, fresh clean flavour with a honeyed aftertaste and a crumbly, flaky texture.
for families, groups and individuals
Always featured in the famous Wallace & Gromit films, this cheese is great for all occasions. Lightly crumbled into salads gives them a bit of lift, or just on your favourite cheese biscuit. Such a versatile cheese.

yy
Cover and refrigerate for 3 hours.
yy
On the hob, bring a pan of salted water to the boil.

Add the noodles and cook according to the pack instructions, then drain and set aside.

• I want some repairs done to my cooker as it has backfired and burnt my knob off. • I wish to complain that my father twisted his ankle very badly when he put his foot in the hole in his back passage. • I wish to report that tiles are missing from the outside toilet roof. I think it was bad wind the other day that blew them off. • My lavatory seat is cracked, where do I stand? • I am writing on behalf of my sink, which is coming away from the wall. • Will you please send someone to mend the garden path. My wife tripped and fell on it yesterday and now she is pregnant. • I request permission to remove my drawers in the kitchen. • 50% of the walls are damp, 50% have crumbling plaster, and 50% are just plain filthy. • The toilet is blocked and we cannot bath the children until it is cleared. • Will you please send a man to look at my water, it is a funny colour and not fit to drink. • Our lavatory seat is broken in half and now is in three pieces. • Our kitchen floor is damp. We have two children and would like a third, so please send someone round to do something about it. • Please send a man with the right tool to finish the job and satisfy my wife.. • I have had the clerk of works down on the floor six times but I still have no satisfaction. • This is to let you know that our lavatory seat is broke and we can't get BBC2.

ITALY: Love The Liqueurs
B
ottega’s wines and drinks productions continue to please and receive awards. Their liqueurs are excellent in cocktails, too. Fior di Latte (15% vol) is white chocolate cream. This liqueur has a good bouquet of white chocolate, plus a soft and velvety mouthfeel. Gianduia Chocolate Cream (17% vol) is a creamy production that has an impressive aroma of Gianduia chocolate, which was created in Piedmont, Italy, during 1806. The bouquet of cocoa and nuts is typical of Gianduia. The sweetness of milk cream makes this a very popular choice, for many. Latte Macchiato (15% vol) has a blend of carefully – selected coffee beans to give the best aroma and taste. After the beans are crushed they are soaked in water and alcohol for 15 days, being stirred daily, then filtered and stabilised. The intense bouquet of coffee and milk follows through to the mouthfeel and palate sensation, perfectly. Crema di Limoncino (15% vol) has Sicilian lemon peels infused with alcohol, which gives the liqueur an intense and fresh bouquet of ripe lemons, plus harmonious milk and cream. Other Bottega liqueur productions include Nero (15%) vol). Chocolate is reputedly ‘food of the gods’ and this production has many devotees. The dark chocolate sensations and the richness are perfect for chocoholics. Pistacchio Cream (17% Ledbury Focus
vol), with pistachios exclusively harvested in Sicily, is a favourite with numerous liqueur connoisseurs. For all information and availability www.bottegaspa.com Staibano produces award-winning Amalfi Smooth (Crema di Limone). This light (17% vol) Italian premium lemon cream liqueur utilises high-quality Amalfi lemons IGP. Flamboyant Napolitan Don Vincenzo Staibano owned lemon groves and commenced productions during 1932. These productions continue today by Cesco Amodio, Don Vincenzo’s great-grandson. A fresh and natural aroma greets the nasal senses, enticing to the smooth, delicious and refreshing mouthfeel, followed by superb pleasure on the palate. From the beginning the Staibano family have always enjoyed drinking Amalfi Smooth over ice, with fresh basil. Many people take pleasure in concocting various spritzers, perhaps with ginger beer, ice and fresh mint, for example. Staibano drinks’ retailers include Harvey Nichols and online at Amazon. The website has all details, including fabulous cocktail recipes. www.staibano.com As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

I
n the third year of Worcestershire Open Studios, over 200 artists will open their studios, homes and shared spaces to the public for three days at 70 different locations across Worcestershire. This unique annual opportunity gives you the chance to experience the life and environment of an artist and talk directly to creators about their inspiration and creative processes. Learn more about their amazing techniques, materials and beautiful artwork. Anna Cumming from Upper Colwall, Gilly Hancock from Colwall Green and Louise Pilditch from Welland are all local painters deeply inspired by magical land and seascapes. Anna says, “I love the hills but am drawn to the sea. I'm interested in moody skies, turbulent seas, interesting reflections and the play of light. My paintings are based on scenes and experiences from St Ives to Scotland, with the intention being to capture a mood or energy so the location doesn't really matter if it evokes something for you.” The number of participating artists and organisations this year is at the highest count than ever before, so there’s even more exciting art to see than previous years. A diverse collection of original arts and crafts will be available to see and buy – from drawing, painting, printmaking and photography to ceramics, jewellery, textiles and mixed media. With such variety, there’s something to suit every taste, from contemporary

perfect way to spend a bank holiday weekend. Whether you’re an art lover, a budding young artist or have never set foot inside an art gallery, you’ll most definitely receive a warm welcome.
Painter, Eugene Conway, from Colwall is just one of the many passionate artists willing to share this ideas and work, he says, “Sharing what I do is fundamental to the process of being a painter, and this open studio event will firstly enable me to open up my own cabinet of curiosities, and secondly shine some light on the processes involved. Using an alla prima (weton-wet) technique when working in oil paints gives me an all or nothing approach and encourages a spontaneous response to the subject chosen.”
