SUFFERING BACK PAIN?

PERHAPS IT’S TIME TO DO SOMETHING Back pain affects 80% of people at some time in their lives. It can result from immediate injury or years of stresses building up to breaking point. Your options aren’t limited to long GP waiting lists, painkillers, or suffering in silence. At times like these an expert opinion is a logical first step. Osteopaths are highly trained to assess, diagnose, treat and advise you from the first consultation to the end of your recovery. We will also work with you to minimise the risk of future recurrences. Back pain can have a distressing effect on the lives of those who suffer. If you feel it’s time to do something, then give us a call.

In case you are wondering, the gorgeous specimen on the front cover this month, is a lion fish, photographed at the National Aquarium in Qawra in St Paul's Bay, Malta. August seems to be a month of artistic enterprise, with several art exhibitions, so make a note to go along and see some of the work produced by our very talented local artists. Age UK's article this month is about getting outdoors this summer, and whilst their articles are generally aimed at our senior citizens, this is excellent advice for everyone! So - assuming it's not raining of course - why not switch off the TV, shut down your PC and go for a walk! We are very fortunate that we live in this lovely rural area with lots of wide open spaces to go for a walk, have a picnic and just enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside. St Richard's Hospice have two items in this month so look out for them as you browse through. That's all for now. Enjoy the summer and the lovely long nights.

Ledbury Framing Studio & Gallery M y name is Nolan, and I moved to Ledbury two years ago. My wife and I fell in love with the community that Ledbury offers. What is so striking about Ledbury is the diverse independently owned businesses, and Ledbury’s strong mind-frame to promote and support them. In April 2016 I took over the well-established business: Ledbury Framing Studio & Gallery. For a long time prior to owning Ledbury Framing, I have had a passion and vision for framing artwork and memorabilia. I get real pleasure from taking peoples’ beloved and valued pieces, and enhancing them through framing, whilst ensuring they are protected and preserved using conservation materials and techniques. An additional aspect that I love about my job is the people I meet, both new and returning customers. I love suggesting different way to frame items that perhaps my customers may not have thought of, or thought were not possible. I have a passion for contemporary ideas whilst also being sympathetic and true to traditional styles of framing, guaranteeing each piece is complimented and enhanced by its frame.

You can also find out what’s happening with Ledbury Framing on social media: www.facebook.com/Ledburyframing www.instgram.com/ledburyframing Ledbury Framing are very excited to be hosting an exhibition of original water colours and oils painted by local artist Malcom Ennis on August 11th from 7pm to 9pm. Everybody welcome. Location: Ledbury Framing Studio and Gallery Unit 4a Station Industrial estate, The Homend, Ledbury HR8 1AR.

Also within the studio is a gallery which I am currently developing and introducing new artists, with a strong ethos of promoting local artists. The range and diversity of artwork is always changing, so please come in and have a look. Please see our advert for new opening times.

Get outdoors this

SUMMER!

R

esearch shows that spending time in the fresh air, surrounded by nature, increases energy in 90% of people. So, instead of reaching for a cup of coffee, when you feel low, a better way to get energized is to connect with nature. The fresh air can raise your immune system, by increasing the number of white blood cells. Outdoor scents such as pine trees, freshly cut grass, lavender, or roses, can decrease stress and increase happiness and relaxation. Age UK Herefordshire & Worcestershire have been putting together some ideas for you to get outdoors and ‘smell the roses’ this summer … Visit NGS Gardens - there are 26 gardens in open to the public in Worcestershire

between July and September 2016, including 14 with wheelchair access. Look out for the NGS booklets, or visit the website www.ngs.org.uk . The National Trust often organise guided walks on their properties. Stimulate your mind as well as enjoying the fresh air, with information provided by the guide. For example: Croome Park in Worcestershire. Call: 01905 371006 for information on Croome Park guided walks. Join your local Walking for Health group. Walking for Health are free, short walks led by a trained walk leader every week. There are 24 groups listed in Worcestershire. For more details, or to request a Worcestershire Health Walks Groups leaflet, call Lynn Yendell the Worcestershire

County Council Health Walks Officer on tel: 01905 766155 (Monday to Wednesday) Take up Bowls Herefordshire & Worcestershire were one of only seven county sports partnerships to be appointed a Bowls Hot Spot Area by the Bowls Development Alliance for 2015-16. This means it is the perfect time to take up bowls due to the increased funding and coaches available to the clubs. For example the Cripplegate Park Bowling Green offer free starter coaching to anyone who would like an introduction to bowling. Any age group is welcome. Cripplegate Park, Tybridge Street, Worcester. April to September. Remember, getting outside in the fresh air is important for bone health as well as your general health. Sunlight produces Vitamin D in our bodies which results in healthy bones. Our bones start to thin as we age so anything which keeps them strong is vital. Don’t miss out this summer . . . get outdoors!

“Last year's open studio was a fantastic success so I’m taking part again this year. My house is like an art gallery filled with my paintings. My work is colourful, unique, and energetic from my love of beauty, nature, people and life in various styles.” Sue Firmin, who’s based in Lower Broadheath says, “I am looking forward to sharing my work with visitors and hearing their opinions. M

any of you will know me as ‘Emma from Handley and Hawcutt Funeral Directors’ - well, that is no more. After eleven enjoyable and rewarding years working as Funeral Director and latterly Principal Funeral Director for the Bromyard and Ledbury based Funeral Directors, I thought the time was right to be brave and achieve what has always been my ultimate dream. ‘Emma Bouston Funeral Services’ was established in May 2016 and I am the very proud owner of the new business.

Our office and private chapel of rest is situated at Leighton Court, Much Cowarne. Please feel free to pop in, have a cup of tea, and look around our premises if you wish. We are always on hand with a warm welcome. We offer a 24 hour personal service and would be extremely priviledged to assist and advise you and your families in any way that we can. For further information, please visit my website, www.ebfuneralservices.co.uk, e-mail me at emma@ebfuneralservices.co.uk or call 01531 641924.

With the help of my supportive family, we are here to serve the bereaved at their time of need. I have been associated with funeral directing since the age of 16, and qualified as a funeral director at 19. With 20 years of funeral directing experience I feel that I am in a wonderful position to offer support and guidance to families when the need arises. Funeral Directing isn’t a job - it is a vocation, one which I am truly blessed to have become part of. Having worked for a large organisation for the past few years, I am immensely proud to be the owner of an independent family run business. This enables us at Emma Bouston Funeral Services to provide a personal, dedicated service that families deserve when suffering the loss of a loved one. I am devoted to helping the bereaved arrange a professional, fitting, long lasting tribute to the one they have lost. I am here to offer all the choices available to enable your loved ones to have a memorable, dignified farewell; one that reflects their life, whatever that may be. Ledbury Focus

that it takes a year to put on new growth and to be able to appreciate the nice red or different coloured stems. By rotating the growth on a 3-year or 5-year cycle means you can keep the plant at a set height. So, based on a 3-year cycle:

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

PRUNING There are three main types of pruning: Spur pruning This is where you take a branch that has main growth coming out of the middle and then it branches off on either side as a pair. By pruning the middle part out you end up with two side shoots, a bit like two antler spurs. These then branch off and then spur again so you can go down to each branch. The advantage of doing this is the bush is then pruned back, not looking like it has been hacked. When you look at it you should see that it has been managed, but you shouldn’t see the cuts because the two side spurs cover the original cut. Another advantage of this, is to be able to prune tighter back to a joint and shape back a plant without it looking as though it has been hedge cut. It also leaves flowering buds on the shrub, which means you can reduce it and keep it under control whilst retaining the new buds and promise of further flowers. If you ran a hedge cutter over and, what is called `lollipop’ it, if it flowers on second year growth, this method would mean you would remove all the new flower heads and decimate the second year’s growth. Rotational Growth Plants such as Cornus and Dogwood are grown for their coloured stems. The RHS would say “After the winter get your Cornus right down to ground level and let them re-sprout.” The disadvantage with this is 28

Year 1 - take the oldest stem out to ground level. Year 2 - the following year you take the next oldest stems out, and the previous year that you cut out will be into the first year height. Year 3 - you take the oldest stems out again, and the first year growth becomes the second year, and the second year growth becomes the third year. This way there will be nothing that has any more than 3 years growth, and the first 3 (or 5 years) are the most colourful with shrubs like Cornus, and the bush growth will be no more than 3 years in height. Some people use a hedge cutter and prune from the top. This is fine, but the old woody stems lose their colour and you have the lovely coloured stems on the top of the plant. At some point that plant will get too big and you will have to cut it down to ground level, so all that effort of putting in the new shoots is then lost. Hazel: when you coppice them in a woodland environment, you would coppice everything down to the ground and return in 3 to 5 years’ time when it has started to produce nuts and also nice straight stems. These would have been used for hedgelaying back in the old times, or for making bows and arrows, etc. In a garden situation this is the same sort of thing: you are coppicing down to ground level, but you are only coppicing some of the plant in order to be able to retain some of the interest at all times. Again, on a Hazel in a garden situation you would maybe do it on a 5-year cycle because it takes one of its new stems up to 5 years to produce fruit; so if you wanted the Catkins and fruit on a 5-year cycle you wouldn’t lose any of the interest in a garden. A little bit of research on how long a plant takes to mature and fruit from that point of view will also help to plan out rotational growth.

just above a bud

above a healthy side branch

Tipping When you prune something like Forsythia, which puts on a mass of new growth, this growth gets very tall and leggy, sometimes so tall that it ends up snapping off or can’t support the flowers when it comes into flower. By tipping the ends - which is pinching out at the growing point - this puts on side shoots that can then grow sideways rather than just straight up, thereby slowing the height of the plant, and putting out more side shoots, which would eventually result in more flowers. Forsythia takes 2 years to flower, so by tipping the ends, it will put on twice the bulk than if it went straight up towards the light. The secret is, if you know where it is likely to sprout from, then this is where you can tip the ends out and the flowers will become at head height. If you have something very scented you don’t want it flowering too much above your head otherwise you won’t be able to smell the flowers and you won’t be able to see them either. last year's spur

leave only main branch

cut to base or ground; file off stubs

never prune so that long stubs remain

Just about all plants will send a shoot out on a bend, so if your plant leans (Forsythia doesn’t, whereas Jasmine is very good at doing this), it leans out and then grows from the bend. This new shoot is closest to the sun, and is the straightest point to obtain goodness from the roots to the tip. This shoot grows very quickly and very strong; grows up, can’t support itself and then leans over the growth that has grown underneath it. If this keeps happening on a regular basis the underneath will die out and that is when you get a shrub that has a lot of dead underneath. The Montana Clematis will do the same thing. It grows very quickly on the joints, nice new purple growth, but smothers the growth underneath it. If you lift this plant up and take this growth from underneath out, or prune back to the joint, then all the goodness is going into the major shoots and not killing off the growth underneath. Next month I will look at when and how to water plants.

There’s a new natural health clinic in town!

T

he Wellhaven Clinic is based in the Old Cottage Hospital and specialises in acupuncture but offers other therapies too. The Director, Sally Cartmell, holds a first class honours degree in Traditional Acupuncture and is also a qualified yoga teacher, partqualified Zero Balancer and self-confessed natural health nerd! Sally grew up locally and previously ran a clinic in Tewkesbury before moving to Ledbury in 2013. We asked Sally what her vision is for the Wellhaven Clinic and this is what she said:

The British Acupuncture Council does a great job of keeping up to date with acupuncture research and you can read more on their website. They provide information on conditions as wide ranging as allergic

“At the Wellhaven Clinic, we really want to create an environment that appeals to everyone. Natural therapies can sometimes be seen as a bit ‘out there’ but there’s a growing body of research to prove that they can help with many conditions. I’ve seen acupuncture help people with a wide variety of symptoms and not just pain, which it’s well known for.

U3A visits the Gardens of Llysdinam

A

round 50 members of the U3A Garden Group recently visited the gardens of Llysdinam in Powys and Hope gardens in Ullingswick. The former set in beautiful countryside including cold and hot greenhouses with peaches, nectarines, apricots, figs, grapes, oranges and lemons. The eldest specimen, a 150-year-old orange tree, was brought back by family member Agnes Minna in 1857.

Lower Hope Gardens are in a stunning setting of exquisitely well-tended gardens spanning seven acres facing South and West,. The gardens consist of herbaceous borders, rose walks, laburnum tunnel, Mediterranean, bog and Italian Gardens with the recent addition of a Japanese Garden. Conservatories and large glasshouses contain exotic species orchids, colourful butterflies and bougainvilleas.

The Group took the opportunity to take a botanical stroll through the lime tree walk to view the vista of a magnificent wildlife pond, landscaped with wild flowers. Thanks to Brenda and Linda for organising both trips. article by Jayne McGlone

OUR SPECIES of the month:

The Barn Owl

T

he barn owl is the most widely distributed species of owl. It has a heart-shaped face, brown speckled back and white underparts. Females often have darker brown feathers around the rim of the facial disc, as well as darker bars on the tail and small black spots on the chest and underside of the wings.

This year, the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust is running a new series taking a closer look at one key species of flora or fauna each month. For August, we are Barn owls do not hoot, looking at the barn owl or instead they emit a long, eerie screech. Like most owls, the Tyto alba . . .

40

barn owl is usually most active from dusk time until dawn, relying on its acute sense of hearing when

hunting in darkness. Their feathers are especially soft for silent flight, but not very waterproof so they avoid hunting in rain. The barn owl eats mice, voles and shrews. It hunts by flying slowly, surveying the ground and hovering over spots where prey might be hiding. The bird has long, broad wings, enabling it to manoeuvre and turn abruptly. Its tendency to fly low along field margins and hedgerows makes it vulnerable to cars and many are killed on the UK’s roads each year.

Barn owls are not particularly territorial, but have a home range within which they forage. They usually stick with one mate for life, unless one of the pair dies. Outside the breeding season, males and females usually roost separately, each one having about three favourite sites. Where to see them Barn owls can be found in open country, along field edges, riverbanks and roadside verges. Often they can be seen at dusk, hovering or quartering over rough tussocky fields and grassland where their prey is plentiful. How to help barn owls thrive If you have space, consider installing your own barn owl box. As the birds are sensitive to

disturbance, it's best to place boxes in quiet locations, such as inside barns or on trees. If you are a landowner, you could create additional areas of rough grassland or field margins of around two metres wide, alongside field boundaries. These would help to create the necessary habitat needed to support voles and barn owls. Get in touch If you spot a barn owl – or any other species please do let us know! You can submit records online at www.herefordshirewt.org, email them to us at records@herefordshirewt.co.uk or write to us at Lower House Farm, Ledbury Road, Hereford, HR1 1UT.

Events at Herefordshire Wildlife Trust August 2016 WildPlay children’s activities will take place throughout August in Hereford, Ewyas Harold, Ledbury, Kington, Ross-on-Wye and at Nature Reserves on the Doward. Activities include environmental fun and games with crafts, races, bug hunting, stream dipping and lots more besides! For more information, dates and locations go to Wildplay.org The Bromyard Downs Project will be running work parties on the Downs on 9th, 20th & 25th August. They will be carrying out practical habitat management work such as scrub clearance and woodland work. Treatment for Chronic Pain

by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DipM

In this article, I would like to share with you some information concerning chronic pain, what it is, how it can affect the individual and how I work in practice to help clients suffering from this condition. What is Chronic Pain? Chronic pain is a type of pain that has been present over a longer period of time, generally, if pain has persisted or reoccurs over a period of 3 months it is referred to as chronic. Chronic pain may be related to a condition such as arthritis or diabetes or it may be the pain that results from an injury such as whiplash or pain that results from an operation after normal other healing has taken place. It may, however, have no detectable cause from an injury, operation or illness. In a National pain audit conducted in 2009, it was reported that each year in the UK over 5 million people develop chronic pain and only two-thirds of these will recover. It is clear that much more needs to be done to improve outcomes for patients with this condition. Services across the UK differ greatly from one NHS trust to 44

another but treatment comprising of some of the following tends to be common; physiotherapy, talking therapies such as counselling or CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), drug therapy and occasionally other holistic therapies such as Acupuncture are also made available. The effects of chronic pain The effects of chronic pain can vary significantly from individual to individual, depending on the illness the individual is dealing with. The psychological effects of chronic pain are a major consideration in any treatment regime. Self-help tips to manage chronic pain Some self-help tips that may help with chronic pain include; • Meditation / Mindfulness • Gentle Stretching • Gentle Tai Chi

• Gentle Yoga • Supplementation of specific minerals i.e. Magnesium NB: The efficacy of the above will really vary from person to person and the type of pain they are dealing with. It is a good idea to seek advice before commencing with any of these. How The Bowen Technique can help with chronic pain I have worked with many people experiencing chronic pain of varying degrees over the years and Bowen really seems to help them. The points highlighted below I believe are reasons why this technique is so effective. Bowen is gentle Light touch often elicits significant benefit in the body and many studies have confirmed that the lighter the touch, the more effective and profound the effect of treatment can be.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: betty@grapevinepublications.co.uk

The Bowen Technique is incredibly gentle and involves light moves being applied to different parts of the body. The moves are often made over muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, joints and occasionally nerves. Treatment aims to stimulate the nervous system and body to begin a process of healing, repair and rejuvenation. Bowen works on many levels The Bowen moves – are made at key structural points on the body which the brain uses as natural reference points to determine the body’s posture. As a result, the moves can have a huge effect on the way the body holds itself. The nervous system – sensory information is induced by the Bowen move which reaches the spinal cord passing through the nerve pathways to the different centres of the brain. At this point the information is shunted back and forth via a complex self-corrective feedback mechanism, this info is then sent back down the spinal cord to the individual muscles for correction to take place. Bowen work will also often have a positive impact an individual’s emotional state and there are specific procedures that can be used to address anxiety and emotional issues. The importance of Fascia Fascia is connective tissue that covers all of the structures of the Ledbury Focus

body and allows flexibility and free flowing movement throughout the whole body. The body maintains structure through its relationship with key structural bands of muscle via fascia. One key function of fascia bands is to maintain upright structure. If there is tension or weakness in the fascia a range of reactions can result such as pressure on nerves, tension in the musculature on one side and compensation patterns being set up in the rest of the body. In Bowen, we directly affect fascia by changing the way in which the muscles and fascia relate to each other and a change in structure becomes inevitable whereby the structure of the body will adopt a better position and the body will be better able to function. To highlight how important and how effective treating fascia is I give an example that the fascial system contains 10x more receptors than muscles, these receptors send messages directly to the brain. Bowen is holistic and dynamic Our bodies are complex systems that work as a whole and generally, when one system is out of balance a knock on effect will be experienced elsewhere. Bowen work will often have an impact on a multitude of symptoms that an individual may be experiencing.

Contact me for more information I am offering a free 15-minute telephone consultation so you can find out more about the therapies I practice and how they could help you.

Fast food isn’t always bad T

he sound of agitated twittering filled the garden; a familiar noise that made me smile for this wasn’t an alarm call, but a chorus of fledglings demanding food. It was June, and their parents had finally coaxed them from their nests to face a new world; an uncertain future. Wave after wave of young birds arrived until it seemed that every bush and tree was filled with fledglings their soft colours showing their youth, camouflaging them amongst the leaves. Only the new woodpeckers looked smart, although their parents showed all the signs of weeks in a hole in a tree, their white breasts stained brown. Blue tits puffed out muted yellow feathers against the rain. Sleek, pale nuthatches perched on a pear tree branch, bewildered by the new world they found themselves in and hoping that a parent wasn’t far away. A few days later I watched them, with self-assuredness, running up and down the trunk of a metasequoia. These youngsters don’t have time to be unsure. They must learn to survive and quickly. Predators watch and wait. A sparrow-hawk sweeps in, the inexperienced fledglings make easy prey. Weasels and stoats lurk in the undergrowth ready to pounce, 50

magpies eye up a tasty brood. Danger stalks them, even in the garden. Their nests are not safe havens, but out here it all seems so much more perilous. As if predators were not enough to cope with, the weather was against these youngsters too. It rained. By mid-June the month was already being talked of as possibly the wettest on record. Torrential storms brought flash flooding. But for the fledglings, for whom such things are beyond their world, there was worse; a shortage of food. The caterpillars, their parents relied on to feed them, were washed from the leaves of trees, insects seemed in short supply. But help was at hand. There was the fast food out-let. A dawn till

dusk service for all. Parents led their broods to the feeders in droves. The lady of the house found herself filling up the feeders more often than usual, until by the middle of June she had twelve, at six stations, in use. She expected to feed more at fledging time, but this was unprecedented. And what she noticed too, was not only the numbers of fledglings, but the varieties: goldfinches, chaffinches, greenfinches and siskins as well as the usual crowd of tits, woodpeckers, nuthatches, blackbirds and robins. But she was happy to see them all making use of the fast food she made available to them.

A Taste Of… THAILAND

T

he first UK Thai Square Restaurant was opened during 1996, in The Strand, Central London. Now, having several venues in London and also other UK locations, with more planned, Thai cuisine can be enjoyed, at many destinations, with this multi awardwinning company. Ingredients are flown in daily, from Thailand. Mixed starters is a sharing dish and includes vegetable spring rolls, chicken satay and much more. This is a firm favourite. Mains include stir-fried dishes, plus curried and grilled cuisine. Seafood, noodles and rice dishes also feature on their splendid menu. Bangkok lamb and Chu Chi Goong (Tiger prawn in chuchee curry, cooked with coconut cream , lime leaf and sweet basil) have a following of devotees. A selection of superb desserts complete the dining experience. The brigade of chefs ensure highquality, with both cooking and presentations, providing subtle and also intense fragrances and flavours, at all times. The service is impeccable. Exotic cocktails, plus wines and drinks, from worldwide destinations, are available and I found the multi award-winning Monsoon Valley Thai wines, exceptional. From their Premium Range, Colombard (white), Shiraz (red) and Shiraz (rosé) are all chosen regularly. Having splendid bouquets and being very well structured these productions are enjoyed by many. Chenin Blanc Late Harvest is ‘flagship’, superbly aromatic and has nectar-like qualities. Impressive – very impressive! The grapes for Monsoon Valley wines come from ‘floating vineyards’ and the Hua Hin Hills Vineyard. The wines are known for their quality and unique Ledbury Focus

character. Monsoon Valley wines can be found at most 5-star hotels and resorts in Thailand and at many restaurants, globally. Thai Square venues are located in areas of great interest. For example, Putney Bridge is famous for the Boat Race. Fulham Palace is nearby, plus Wimbledon, Richmond and Twickenham can all be easily accessed. Thai Square Putney Bridge has fantastic views over the River Thames. All dietary requirements can be catered for, plus parties and celebrations easily accommodated. All details of venues, plus wines/drinks information can be found on the respective websites Thai Square Putney Bridge 2-4 Lower Richmond Road, Putney, London SW15 1LB Tel: 020 8780 1811 Email: thaisqputney@btconnect.com www.thaisq.com Email: chutiton.pryde@siamwineryeurope.com www.monsoonvalleywine.com

edbury Town residents and visitors from far and wide showed their support for Armed Forces Day when crowds braved the rain remembering the centenary of The Battle of Jutland and The Battle of the Somme. A full programme of activities had been or organised with living history stalls and displays in and around the Town centre including horses, a tank, rifles and other weaponry and cookery from the trenches. The Ledbury Brass Band, community choirs, and the West Midlands Fire Service Band provided music and singing. The parade was led by the Fire Service Band and followed by HMS

A MESSAGE FROM Police Inspector Bob Barnett

T

his is my last newsletter as the local Policing Safer Neighbourhood Inspector. I retire as a Police Officer, after 30 years public service on 31st July 2016. It has been a privilege and an honour to be associated with Herefordshire over the past 16 years. I have immensely enjoyed all of my roles as a police officer, but it has always been community policing that has given me the most satisfaction. Thank you for your support in everything that we do. My successor is Inspector Callie-Ann Bradley. I am sure that over the coming months she will be visible in our community and meet with many of you. Anyway, onto business! I know it seems we have moved on from summer with all the wet weather but home and garden security is critical. Also consider your home whilst in the garden. Lock doors and windows to prevent sneak thieves helping themselves whilst you are busy in the garden. Remember to protect your items of value – you can get a free crime prevention survey by visiting our web site at www. westmercia.police.uk You can also register what you value by adding its serial number to the free national property database. It can be found at https://www. immobilise.com/

70

Crime and Cyber Security The online Crime and Cyber Security initiative continues. Let me remind you about emails that ask you to do the ‘urgent and unexpected’ i.e. update your payment card details! Opening the attachment or the link will download a virus to your computer. Some simple steps you can take to reduce the risk are FAAP! F:

Firewalls – Have one! Set your firewall to automatically block access to ‘bad sites’.

A:

Anti-Malware & Virus Protection – set to automatically update.

A:

Access Control – Change default passwords to your own. Passwords should be complicated – mix of lower and upper case letters, numbers and symbols.

P:

Patching – update software when prompted – this fixes gaps in the program on your computer that are exploited by hackers.

Non-emergency calls I would like to issue a reminder to our communities that the best way to reach us in non-emergency situations is via 101. Remember in an emergency dial 999. Over the past few months we have received a number of calls from residents who have left

Watercolour ‘winner’ at Ledbury Community Day

T

his year Ledbury Art Society tried something different. We gathered twelve pictures from members, painted in and around Ledbury, in a variety of mediums. The three favourite pictures, by public vote, were all watercolours. I have had lots of enquiries about which picture was favourite amongst the 120 voters … and the favourite was Belinda Morgan’s picture. Belinda paints in a detailed style, here depicting two of our iconic buildings designed within a wreath of apple boughs and hops, which are famous local crops in the area. Tony Bateman’s pen and wash of 'St Katherine’s to Top Cross', capturing the heritage feel of the High Street, was close behind, whilst third favourite was the atmospheric view of The Malvern Hills under a blanket of Snow. Amazingly all twelve of the pictures received votes, a 72

reflection of the broad taste in artistic style and subject locally. This Year it rained on Community Day, but just one determined member, Meg Keeble, braved the chill to paint 'en plein air', and produce an acrylic picture of Ledbury Centre from the shelter of the Market House, and in the kindly company of the Scouts who had their stall there.

To see more of our work at first hand why not visit us in Ledbury?

Next Exhibitions: 10th & 11th September at The Burgage Hall, Church Lane – 10am to 4.30pm. Admission Free 21st to 27th November at The Weaver’s Gallery, Church Lane – 10am to 4.30pm. Admission Free

Another new venture for Ledbury Art Society this year is to put on an additional Exhibition, so two more to come this year, with another two chances for locals and visitors to share and enjoy our art, and even to buy some original artwork, and/or Greetings Cards.
