Hello Readers... Welcome to the Christmas issue of the Ledbury Focus - and a quick reminder that this is the December/January magazine, so don’t forget to keep it for two months, until the February issue comes through your door at the end of January.
Ledbury Focus Publisher & Advertising Grapevine Publications (Worcestershire) Ltd 5\H 6WUHHW ‡ %LUWVPRUWRQ ‡ :5 $6 7HO y 0RE info@grapevinepublications.co.uk www.grapevinepublications.co.uk
In this issue, the focus is of course, on Christmas. In the What’s On section you’ll find lots of events leading up to Christmas and as you browse through, you’ll see a number of adverts for Christmas fairs, carol services, etc. And not to be missed, our Christmas cake recipe . . . with a difference! I haven’t tried this one for myself, but it sounds delicious, so I’ve decided to make it to have in addition to our usual fruit cake! Fortunately we’ve got a house full of visitors this year, so I don’t suppose there’ll be much in the way of leftovers.

Those of you who know me, will know that before coming to live in England, I spent many years in South Africa, so despite having been here for the last 18 years, a traditional English Christmas is still a novelty for me: real Christmas trees, and real holly wreaths, real mistletoe, and sometimes, if we are very lucky, real snow! Although I spent most of my life in Africa, somehow a barbeque in 40° sunshine just didn’t seem right on Christmas Day!

And on that note, I will wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope you all have a wonderful festive season, so until next time, keep happy and healthy.

Ledbury Town Council Ledbury’s Neighbourhood Development Plan Referendum 6th December 2018
O
ur Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) is ready for your vote. We have amended it, in line with recommendations made through the examination process. Some of the policies in the Plan were not strong enough and would have meant we could be challenged in court. The Town Council had two options: accept the recommendations and go forward, or withdraw the Plan rework the weak policies, and then re-submit for examination. Once the Plan is adopted, we can work on making it stronger. In particular we want to try to identify land for sports facilities and land for improved health care facilities. In doing this we will also be working on defining the Settlement Boundary. Such a boundary materially effects where new housing can be built. But first things first. It is for the town to decide whether or not to adopt the NDP. The full document can be read on line at www. ledburytowncouncil.gov.uk/Article. If you would like to discuss this or any issues around land use, then come to our event on Saturday 1st December 10am till 1pm in the Council offices. We will have a small exhibition and copies of the plan available and will aim to answer any questions. We are confident that if the town accepts the NDP, it will increase our protection against speculative developers. We will then work to strengthen that protection. Nina Shields Chairman, Ledbury Town Council

A Fitting Tribute to the Fallen
O
n Sunday 11th November, Ledbury turned out en masse to commemorate Remembrance Day and to honour the many thousands who gave their lives in WW1 and in all the wars and conflicts since then.
Photographs by Jan Long
Local photographer, Jan Long, was there to record the occasion. These are just a small selection of the many photographs she took, showing the various groups and organisations, both military and civilian, who were represented, as well as the hundreds of people who attended the memorial service.

Sarah Mills PRACTICE Qualifications Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Psychology, Certificate in Relationship Counselling, Externship and Advanced Externship in Emotion Focused Therapy, Certificate in Young Person’s Counselling, Practicum and Advanced Practicum in Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy, Foundation Certificate in Systemic Therapy, PGCE Further Education Areas of Practice Young People, Individuals and Couples I provide therapeutic support for relationship issues, bereavement, illness, anxiety, depression, self-harm, substance misuse and other areas. I collaborate with the individual client regarding referring on to other specialist services if this is appropriate. My back-ground is in education and charity organisations. This has enabled me to work with a broad range of issues. Type of Counsellor Integrative My core value is the capacity for change and growth, and that this is possible if there is an individual desire to fulfil this and a supportive nurturing environment to facilitate it. I believe in the importance of enhancing autonomy and empowerment, so individuals are enabled to make positive choices. I offer unconditional positive regard for human experience and non-judgementalism in my approach. I place the needs of the individual at the heart of my practice, and the importance of health and wellbeing in the functioning of the individual and their interactions. I listen to the whole of the person as part of my empathic under-standing and to acknowledge the life stories and experiences of the individual. I
20
believe this is so important for self-awareness and to enable change and growth to take place in the short term as well as wider context. In my practice I want to help in making a difference to people's lives. Sessions Duration 50 minutes The first appointment is a 'getting to know' session. This is where you can explore with me what presenting problem(s) are featuring in your life and what you would like to achieve from counselling sessions and how I might be helpful to you. We will also discuss confidentiality in our therapeutic work, and I will explain some key information regarding the boundaries of our therapeutic relationship. In this session we will sign a counselling agreement together which defines our work and expectations. We will also agree how to proceed with sessions, and if agreeable, whether weekly or fortnightly counselling sessions are preferable. We will also agree a time slot for the next session. In the second session onwards, we will embark on our therapeutic work in order to address presenting issues and other areas as they may emerge. We will typically review progress after six sessions, and together decide whether further sessions would be useful after this point. We will keep in mind areas of work that would be useful to you as you move forward and how I could help you therapeutically. Sometimes we discuss referral to other specialist agencies, if appropriate and I help scaffold this transition if useful. I always collaborate with you in deciding what work is useful therapeutically. All you need to do initially is to contact me, either via telephone or email. If you leave a message for me, I will get back to you as soon as possible to instigate making a first appointment.

Destination of the Month: Croatia
roatia has an extraordinary C island-speckled coastline, which is one of the main attractions. The striking clarity of the water set against dazzling white pebbly beaches, has a jewel-like intensity in shades of emerald and sapphire. Alongside the beautiful coastline, there are many historical towns and cities to visit. Culture Croatia offers a patchwork of culture. You will find Venetian palaces snuggled up to Napoleonic forts, Roman columns protruding from early Slavic churches, and Viennese mansions that face off with Socialist Realist sculpture. There are lots of excellent museums which showcase treasures and cover the countries varied history. Best time to visit: May to September
Cities of Croatia Dubrovnik George Bernard Shaw was enchanted by this beautiful city,

about which he said, “Those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik”. Its main feature is the charming pedestrianonly old town, packed with aristocratic palazzi and elegant Baroque churches, all within sturdy medieval fortifications. Along with the beaches, pristine sea, informal eateries serving fabulous seafood, cool five-star hotels and adventure sports facilities, it is a fantastic destination for a long weekend, or for a base from which to explore. Split Split holidays are a popular choice. Split is a city with wow-factor, offering a stunning boulevard, a Roman palace that is a living part of the city centre, and a popular sandy beach within walking distance. With the rugged Dalmatian mountains as a backdrop and the azure Adriatic Sea lapping its shores, it is a magnificent blend of antiquity and modernity, with the relics of its time as part of the Roman Empire, celebrated as much as the al fresco wining and dining that tourists expect.
Zagreb The capital and most populated city in Croatia, is often described as “a large city which managed to stay romantic and safe”. With an array of cafes with gardens and street terraces scattered all over the city, there are unlimited possibilities for visiting music and theatre events, art exhibitions, museums and sporting events. Enjoy pleasant walks, interesting architecture, plentiful parks in the centre of the city, pedestrian zones and the atmosphere.
Islands of Croatia HVAR Pinch yourself as the boat pulls into the natural harbour at Hvar town. You are not dreaming, it is a wonderland. Beautiful yachts bob about in pristine blue water in the middle of this bay which has wide promenades filled with restaurants and bars, on either side. Nestled into the hills above the waterfront are quaint stone buildings and cobbled streets, some harking back to when this

town was a vital naval base of the Venetian Empire. At the very top is the fortress, Fortica, from which you are rewarded with 360-degree views taking in the nearby Pakleni islands and even the coves on the north side of the island. Hvar Best Beaches: Uvala Dubovica, is a broad pebbly beach beside an historic manor house. It is shallow but is also popular with yachts and motorboats in season. Access can be tricky – the parking strip on the main road above the bay is limited, so get there early, or rent a bike or scooter from Luka Rent in Hvar and beach-hop your way along the coast. Grebišće, the silk like sand is perfect for a smooth paddle or swim and can be welcome after the many shingle or pebbly beaches found on Hvar. The beach is reached by walking through the Grebišće campsite. Drinks and basic snacks are available at the campsite café or from the Čorni Petar beach bar. Brac Brac is the largest island in central Dalmatia. It is quite laid back –
even in the larger coastal towns like Bol. The coast is a mix of sand-andshingle beaches and rocky coves. Inland you will find hilly countryside that’s a honeypot for hikers, bikers and mountaineers. Ferries putter between the surrounding islands and mainland Croatia, placing Split and Hvar island within easy reach. The towns along Brac’s coastline are typically Croatian. Harbour towns like Bol serve up beautiful groups of bright stone houses with rust-red roofs. Streets are cobbled together with polished stone – the same material that was exported from the island to build the White House in Washington, DC! Zlatni Rat Beach is a silvery tongue of shingle extending into a turquoise sea. Zlatni Rat (“Golden Cape”) is very much the poster boy of Dalmatian beaches, pictured in countless brochures and guidebooks. The pebbly peninsula remains a compelling destination despite the crowds.
ruined medieval church among the olive groves. It has numerous tracks and paths to explore the stunning scenery. There is limited parking and no clear bus stop nearby, which helps the beach from becoming overrun. 5th May Hotel Plaza Duce 4* #SBD /JHIUT # # JODMVEJOH MVHHBHF BOE USBOTGFST b QQ 21st September Aminess Grans Azur 4* Dubrovnik, 7 nights B&B Sea View, including luggage and transfers £568pp For more information on Croatia or any other holiday destination. he aim of this group is to consider the future of health provision in Ledbury. After all the new planning has been completed, it is estimated that the population of Ledbury will increase by 45%. The needs of health care must be adjusted to meet the new demand. The first meeting of this group on 21st August 2018, was attended by town councillors; members from the Patient Participation groups of both surgeries and Healthwatch. Discussion ranged from noting our current provision, to reviewing requirements for the future. The aim of the meetings is to identify the healthcare provision, which will be needed in the town, as it grows. There are planning applications for housing, already in the ‘pipeline’, the first, of 321 houses on the by-pass, has already started. We need to make sure that Ledbury’s health care provision increases in line with the growth of the town. As a start we are seeking information from the Clinical Commissioning Group on what provision they are making. More meetings are planned and at our next one, we are inviting representatives from the Clinical Commissioning Group and doctors from both surgeries. If you would like to join in these meetings, comment on current health care provision or make suggestions from improvements, please email Patricia Wilkin at:

What do you get a loved one who has everything?
T
he experience market has positively blossomed in recent years as we all attempt to fill our leisure time with meaningful and very often creative activities.
The Pottery offers gift vouchers to whatever value you would like to spend. For instance, a £20 experience will enable the lucky maker to throw a pot on the wheel, decorate it with coloured slip
It’s no surprise then Eastnor Pottery & The Flying Potter on the Eastnor Castle Estate is seeing more and more individuals and families gifting each other pottery experience vouchers for birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas. Aspiring potters and visitors to the Herefordshire studio are not only creating a tangible object to be proud of, the process of making has therapeutic benefits too. Co-coordinating eye, hand and speed of the potter’s wheel leaves very little mental capacity to dwell on anything other than the task in hand – quite literally! All that other ‘stuff ’ fizzing around participants heads fades away and a state of mindfulness ensues – just like meditating! Workshop participants are also making memories. The Pottery staff strives to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, perfect for friends and family to catch-up and unwind and get their creative juices flowing. The expert guidance and positive facilitation enable visitors to thrive and create that ‘special’ piece or family heirloom. Once it has been fired and glazed, the artefact serves as a permanent reminder of time spent together doing something creative and ultimately rewarding.

and then leave it to be fired and glazed. A voucher to the value of £130 will enable the recipient to play with clay on the potter’s wheel for a whole day, inclusive of a delicious lunch. All in all, making pottery is good for you and what better way to show your appreciation for a loved one than presenting them with an Eastnor Pottery Experience Voucher this Christmas.

Much Marcle’s Latest “Hidden Gem”
I
n the shadow of Westons’ cider factory lies the Slip Tavern, named after a colossal landslide on the Marcle ridge back in 1575.The pub has been an important hub within Much Marcle for decades. Fully refurbished in 2016, the building now reflects, both inside and out, its highly significant status in the area. Since the refurbishment, the pub has operated largely as a drinks-led outfit, serving quality beers, wines, spirits and, of course, cider! In mid-October, the decision was taken to move to the next level offering food, so as to provide some fantastic dishes to both the locals and to the many thousands of visitors per year to Much Marcle. The new head chef, Michael Fowler, has for the past few
weeks, “wowed” diners with his fascinating, delicious and decidedly unpretentious menus, ensuring that every component of every dish adds tremendous depth, whilst achieving a balance of the highest order. Michael joins the Slip Tavern with 25 years’ experience in contributing to and, latterly, running awardwinning kitchens, spanning both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as top-quality restaurants in France, Canada and the UK. Trained from a teenager in Michelin-star kitchens, it is evident that Michael’s food is born out of years’ of experience, hard work and passion. Wherever possible, the Slip Tavern aims to provide the best local produce as part of its food and drink offering: beers from Wye Valley Brewery (14 miles away), soft drinks from Jus (4 miles away), ciders from
Westons’ Cider (500 yards away) and ice creams and sorbets from Hillbrooks Luxury Ice Cream (3 miles away), to name but a few. This emphasis is stamped into the ethos of everything the pub is looking to achieve: local ingredients, served to their fullest potential. The new approach to food is the most obvious recent development at the Slip Tavern, but this is being implemented with equal focus on the customer experience. The laid-back dining setting of the bar-restaurant provides an ideal ambience for diners and drinkers alike to relax and enjoy some top-quality food and drink in an inclusive and stripped-back environment. Whether you require a three course banquet, a pint of glorious local beer or cider, or a bottle of fizz to celebrate, the Slip Tavern is surely the place to go. The Slip Tavern can cater for all types of occasion, from private parties to wakes and birthdays to Bar Mitzvahs. With limited space in the dining area, booking in advance is advised. For any bookings or events, call the pub on 01531 660 246, and to keep up with the latest news, events and menus from the Slip Tavern, find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TheSlipTavern

Creating Your Garden Paradise ĂƌƟĐůĞ ďLJ :ŽŶĂƚŚĂŶ ŝƐŚŽƉ
Movement in the Garden T
here are various options for getting movement into a garden, some are really obvious like a water feature, others are really more subtle such as encouraging wildlife in for, example birds, butterflies, etc., that can also bring the element of movement in. Plants are another instrument for bringing movement into a
40
garden, the movement of leaves and the resulting rustling sounds they can bring, for example bamboo blowing in the wind, is an excellent way of bringing movement into a very small space. Water features are a good option. You don’t necessarily have to install a pond to create a water feature, just water
bubbling over a stone creates a rippling sound and promotes a relaxing environment. This is a cheap option with just some outside power needed. In turn, a pond with a waterfall can bring in birds as they will be encouraged to come in and bathe, bringing additional movement into a garden. The Japanese are experts in using the element of water in a garden and have a tipping water feature called a Deer Scarer, which is a bamboo chute that fills up with water from a pump and when full tips back and knocks against a rock. Giving movement and sound but not all the time. Increasing wildlife into a garden is reasonably easy: you can feed the animals to bring them in, i.e. birds, or create an environment for them to breed and nest, such as bird boxes. However, having a cat or a pet in a garden would have a detrimental effect on attempting this. If you are really restricted for space and large rustling leaves
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
aren't really an option, but you still have some planting in the garden, putting things like windmills, wind chimes, suspended mobiles, etc. can bring in sound and movement. Nowadays you can also get things that move and are operated by sunlight. Solar powered ornaments such as fluttering butterflies will rotate when the sun shines on the power cell making it flutter and move around. These are only a few pounds to buy from a garden centre, but will add some interest reasonably easily and cheaply into a very still garden. Planting: I have already mentioned bamboos as a way of adding movement, but some trees have the same effect. Anything with large leaves that
can be caught by the breeze will obviously move around, for example an Indian Bean Tree (Catalpa bignonioides).
and give the visual appearance that the tree has been given a second life.
Alternatively you can bring dead wood back to life, for example if you have a dead tree in the garden, rather than taking it out you could grow a vine up it. When the tendrils develop and hang off it they will then move around in the wind and make the space look alive again.
If you have a pond then adding some reeds around the outside will contribute to movement when it is windy. Obviously make sure you get the correct ones, you don’t want something that is going to take over the pond or the roots are going to puncture the liner or base of the pond.
This can also be done with a rose, a good strong climbing rose, a Kiftsgate or a Rambling Rector. These are very big climbing roses that will scramble up a dead tree and easily take over. Another variety is a Banksia Rose which is a non prickly and highly scented rose. Any of these varieties will clamber all over the dead wood
If you have a straight forward flower bed and you want to create some movement in there, some fine grasses strategically placed around would be a good recommendation. These will give the impression that they are almost floating and moving around amongst the plants when there is a breeze.
If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Herefordshire Wildlife Trust's Guide to a
Wild Winter! 52
ecember, with its cold dark nights and frosty mornings, is the perfect time of year to be putting food out for the birds if you haven’t started already. Many small birds can struggle to find food at this time of year and they desperately need to keep eating to generate the energy to stay warm. One such bird is the adorable longtailed tit. These tiny birds twitter through gardens in small flocks and roost together for warmth but weighing less than a £1 coin, they are very vulnerable at this time of year. While we love the bright red, orange and yellow berries decorating evergreen branches to bring inside to adorn our hearths, do remember that they are also a source of both food and shelter for birds and mammals – wield the secateurs sparingly! Similarly, leave piles of leaves and logs untouched as, again, these are important shelters and hibernaculums for wildlife such as hedgehogs who stay snuggled in these rustic homes until spring returns.

Winter walk - photo courtesy of Zsuzsanna Bird
Though there may be fewer species out and about in December, the bare trees and faded herbage make any wildlife that does brave a cold day much easier to see. Look out for flocks of fieldfares and redwings feeding on farmland, the darkening grey coats of fallow deer hunkered down in a woodland or a lone fox slinking across a remote windy hillside. The countryside in winter is not left to nature alone – there are plenty of outdoor activities to keep us warm. Though our orchard harvests may be over, now is the time to prune young fruit trees and bottle cider while the New Year brings the tradition of Wassailing to rid the orchards of bad spirits and ensure a fruitful harvest come autumn. Herefordshire’s Wildlife Trust volunteer work parties are kept busy at this time of year as winter is the best time for many tasks in woodlands such as coppicing as well as general maintenance such as repairing gates. If you are interested in joining one of our weekly or monthly groups in your area do get in touch – you’re sure of a warm welcome! And, of course, nothing beats a frosty winter walk and Herefordshire has some Ledbury Focus
wonderful trails and footpaths to explore while wrapped up warm! Herefordshire Wildlife Trust continues to work hard throughout winter to look after the wildlife and landscapes that make our county so special. Members receive our Reserves Guide, regular issues of Wildside Magazine, our natural history journal, Flycatcher plus invitation to exclusive membersonly events. driving, especially in rural areas where they feel they may get away with it. The police have one clear message. "We will prosecute you if you are caught."
Police will be working alongside both our sister organisations, Ambulance and Fire, in the hope of educating and persuading motorists not to drink or drug drive.
Don't have a false sense of security just because you are in a remote location. Police will be patrolling right across Herefordshire to ensure all motorists are abiding by the law.
The consequences of doing so can not only be financially dire to those caught, it can also be very tragic, leaving families with loved ones that are injured or killed as a result of an accident caused by a drink or drug driver. Those that are caught face severe penalties including long driving bans, heavy fines and greatly increased insurance premiums if they get their licence back.
Remember even just one alcoholic drink can impair you ability to drive.
Ledbury safer neighbourhood team will be visiting licensed premises to distribute leaflets and posters highlighting the consequences of driving a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Police officers including our road policing teams will also be out and about in Ledbury to stop and interact with the public, and where necessary administer the tests. This to ensure our roads remain safe over the festive period for the law abiding public. The police urge all those who wish to enjoy a drink to avoid using their vehicles when out enjoying a drink or a meal at some of the excellent pubs and restaurants in the town. However to the few drivers who feel they can get away with drinking or drug

Christmas Crime Prevention The Christmas and the New Year season often presents an opportunity for criminals to target homes, businesses and individuals with a wide range of criminal activity. Important things to consider: r Always ensure you secure your home, business or student accommodation before you leave. If you have a burglar alarm remember to set it when you go out. r It's a good idea to use automatic lights and draw your curtains as the evenings get darker earlier. If you can keep your valuables and any Christmas presents out of sight.
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
r Be aware of fraud and scams whenever you use your bank cards and credit cards on the internet, restaurants and bars and limit your personal information on social media. Remember to keep your cards and their passwords and PIN numbers secure. r Pickpockets and opportunistic thieves like to target people in shopping centres and busy locations so ensure that you take precautions at cash machines and are vigilant regarding your wallet, handbag and mobile phone particularly in cafes, restaurants, when on the street and at transport hubs or on public transport. r When Christmas shopping park your car in a well lit managed area if possible and leave the vehicle secure with no bags, items or valuables on display. r If you are going out celebrating always let someone know where you are going, who you are with and when you might be home. If you change your plans let someone know otherwise they may worry. r Have a plan to get home safe such as pre booking a reputable taxi company or where and when to catch a night bus or train. Remember never to use a minicab off the street as they are illegal and very dangerous.
Be Cyber Smart! The virtual world has real life consequences. S - Strong passwords are nonsensical and made up of a mixture of letters, numbers and punctuation. M - Make sure you update your software and your antivirus before using the internet. A - Always check for a locked padlock or an unbroken key symbol in the browser window when banking online. The 'https' shows the connection is secure. R - Remember to shred documents containing personal details before throwing away. T - Think scams. If an online bargain seems too good to be true it probably is.

hristmas and the winter months are happy for most of us but for some this time of year can cause additional stress and strain. Seasonal bugs and winter illnesses abound and stress can creep up on even the most balanced of us! In this article, I share with you some top tips that you can use to maintain your health and balance and ensure you feel fabulous throughout the season.
Good nutrition Nutritional changes can have a great effect on helping to deal with seasonal bugs and stress. Eliminating foods that create more stress in the body in the way of inflammation, for example, can impact significantly. Alkalising the diet by removing acid-forming foods and eating more alkaline foods can also be very beneficial. Many nutritionists refer to the stomach as the 2nd brain and so having good digestive health is very important. Things like natural yogurt and probiotics including fermented foods like kefir and cider vinegar can greatly improve digestive health and are excellent to add in at this time of year.
When we are deficient in certain vitamins and minerals we can experience specific symptoms. Vitamins and minerals that are vital to our nervous system and therefore helpful in warding off stress include: magnesium and most of the b vitamins. There are many other useful supplements that can also be used for this purpose including theanine and taurine. The helpful vitamins and minerals for seasonal viruses and bugs include: vitamin c, zinc and copper, selenium, and vitamin d. I also recommend taking a good probiotic especially over Christmas time when you might be eating less healthily than usual. In practice, I will often test clients using Kinesiology muscle testing for deficiencies and recommend the supplements they can use in order to help. Gentle exercise Gentle appropriate exercise stimulates the body on many levels releasing endorphins, getting the blood pumping around the body and getting the lymphatic system working at its

best. These things all help you to feel good. Find something that you enjoy and that is appropriate for your fitness levels. I love walking, swimming and also rebound exercise on my mini trampoline! Rebounders are super effective at getting the lymphatic system moving, and in building cardiovascular and muscular strength fast. You don’t need to do over-do it either; apparently, 10 minutes on the rebounder is equivalent to 30 minutes jogging which works for me! A quick self-help routine that will get you buzzing: 3 Thumps Routine
1. K27- Points at the end of your Kidney Meridian, dents just below your clavicle. Tapping or massaging these points is a simple yet effective exercise that will: r Energize you if you’re feeling drowsy r Focus you if you’re having difficulty concentrating 2. Thymus – Tapping the area over your thymus gland will: r Boost your immune system r Stimulate all your energies r Increase strength & vitality 3. Spleen Points – Tapping the Spleen Points below armpits bottom of bra (the spot is often quite tender to the touch) will: r Lift your energy level r Balance your blood chemistry r Strengthen your immune system Ledbury Focus
Useful remedies The remedies I use for general balance, stress and calming the nervous system include: r Rescue remedy / 5 flower remedy – This is a great remedy to have in your medicine cupboard or handbag. It is a combination of 5 of the Bach flower remedies. r Mimulus – A Bach flower remedy used to treat fears, particularly fears of known things like upcoming exams, driving tests, meetings or other events you fear. r Argent Nit – A homeopathic remedy that is used to treat apprehension and anxiety especially regarding an approaching event. r Aconite – A homeopathic remedy that is excellent for intense fear, shock, and anxiety. r Nux Vom – If you have overindulged on food or alcohol this remedy is very useful. Have some treatment with me! I offer treatments tailored to the needs of the individual and we will take a detailed consultation before we decide on the best course of action. As you all know I work with the therapies of Kinesiology and The Bowen Technique. Bowen is very gentle and relaxing and has a big impact on the nervous system balancing and restoring a sense of well-being.
In a Bowen treatment we directly stimulate the nervous system by applying Bowen moves along the vertebral column, other moves applied on the body will also stimulate a response from the nervous system. We are trying to get the sympathetic nervous system to calm down and the parasympathetic system to fire up more easily which will help us to feel more balanced and less stressed. In Bowen, we also affect other structures and systems in the body such as; nerves, tendons, ligaments, muscles and the facia. Many clients report that they feel a deep sense of relaxation during treatment and that this continues for several days after treatment also. There are lots of different procedures in this therapy that can address all sorts of issues from top to toe! Have a healthy happy Christmas and New Year everyone!
On that note, I would like to wish you all a wonderful happy healthy Christmas and New Year! I am also offering all Ledbury Focus readers a 10% off voucher for treatments booked in the month of January 2019, please quote: LFJan19 when booking. I offer a free 15-minute telephone consultation so you can find out more about the therapies I practice and how they could help you. White Chocolate, Orange & Cranberry Christmas Cake Why not try sponge instead of fruit cake this Christmas? This white chocolate cake is a crowd-pleaser and you can buy the meringue decorations, or bake them yourself. INGREDIENTS
For the cake 300g salted butter, chopped 200g white chocolate , finely chopped 500g plain flour 4 tsp baking powder 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 500g white caster sugar 300ml natural yogurt 4 tsp vanilla extract 1 large orange , zested and juiced 6 large eggs 4 tbsp milk For the compote 200g cranberries 150g white caster sugar For the icing 200g white chocolate, finely chopped 500g salted butter , softened 750g icing sugar, sifted 280g cream cheese To decorate meringue kisses (shop-bought, or home made *), edible snowflake decorations and gold leaf (optional) * see recipe on the next page Serves 20

METHOD
y Heat oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4. Rub a little butter over the base and sides of two 20cm cake tins (use cake tins rather than sandwich tins as the higher sides work better), then line the base and sides with baking parchment. y Melt 150g butter with 100g of the chocolate in a bowl set over a small saucepan of gently simmering water – make sure the base of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Stir the butter and chocolate every minute or so until it has melted. Set aside to cool a little. y Meanwhile, measure 250g flour, 2 tsp baking powder, ½ tsp bicarb and 250g sugar in a large bowl. y Make a well in the middle and add 150g yogurt, 2 tsp vanilla extract, half the orange zest and juice, 3 eggs and 2 tbsps milk. Whisk everything together, then stir in the melted butter and chocolate. y When the cake mixture is smooth (this makes a very wet, pourable batter), divide it equally between the two cake tins. y Bake on the middle shelf for 25 to 30 minutes - they will look golden and evenly risen when cooked. Check they are done by pushing a skewer into the centre of the cakes – it should come out clean. If there is any wet cake mixture on the skewer, return the cake to the oven for a few more mins, then check again.
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
y Leave the cakes to cool in their tins for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack. y Wash out the tins and make two more sponges, using the remaining cake ingredients – four cakes in total. (you can make them a day or two before icing, then wrap them in a double layer of cling film once cool - they can also be frozen for up to two months.) y To make the compote: Simmer the cranberries and sugar in a small pan for 4 to 5 minutes until jammy, then leave to cool. y For the icing: Melt the chocolate, either in 20 to 30 second bursts in a microwave or in a bowl over simmering water. Set aside to cool a little. Roughly mash the butter and icing sugar together, then beat until smooth with an electric mixer. Add the chocolate and cream cheese and beat again until smooth. y To assemble the cake: Place one sponge on a cake board the same size as the sponge, then
Ledbury Focus
sandwich the other sponges on top with a little icing and the cranberry compote. Use the cake with the neatest edge, flipped upside down, on top to give your cake a good shape. y Pile about half the remaining icing on top of the cake and use a palette knife to spread it thinly over the top and down the sides of the cake. (this is a crumb coat - it catches any crumbs, ensuring the final layer looks clean and professional.) y Chill the cake for 10 to 20 minutes to firm up the icing or leave it somewhere cool for longer. y Once the icing is firm, use the remaining icing to give the cake another coat, using a palette knife to give a clean smooth finish. Chill again for another 10 to 20 minutes. Will keep for three days. y To decorate the cake: Dot the top with meringue kisses, edible snowflake decorations and gold leaf, if you like.
65
Meringue Kisses Make these meringue kisses to decorate the White Chocolate, Orange & Cranberry Christmas Cake
METHOD
y Heat oven to 120°C/100°C fan/gas ½. y Line two or three baking sheets with parchment paper. y Beat the egg whites until they are foamy and doubled in size. y Add the sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, while you continue to whisk. The meringue will become thick and glossy and should hold up in stiff peaks on the beaters when it is ready. y Fit a disposable piping bag with a 1cm round or star nozzle. INGREDIENTS
2 egg whites 200g white caster sugar red food colouring paste 50g dark chocolate, melted edible glitter or lustre powder (available from www.cakecraft company.com) Makes about 25 mini meringues
66
y Hold it vertically to the baking sheet and gently squeeze, pulling the bag up and away to make a peak. If you are making frosty icicles, make some meringue dots as well. y For colour-striped meringues, fit a disposable piping bag with a round nozzle, paint red food colouring paste in stripes onto the inside of the bag, then fill with meringue and pipe as before. y Bake for 1 hour. y Once cool, drizzle some of the meringues with melted chocolate and sprinkle with edible glitter or lustre powder.

Diamonds, Silver & slippery slopes
T
his month's anecdote might be slightly shorter than normal since I am typing it from my hospital bed . . . After a very successful sale on the 9th November I had chosen to spend the Saturday morning walking on the Malvern Hills. Following a rainy start I had enjoyed a lovely walk with stunning views when I suddenly slipped, and to my horror, broke my ankle. It took four hours for the emergency services to get me off the slippery hillside and now I am typing this anecdote from my bed whilst waiting for a new bionic ankle operation involving an arrangement of metal plates and screws.
70
The November sale included a special section of silver and jewellery and I had been delighted by the trays of diamond rings and other jewellery on offer. Top price of the day was ÂŁ6,200 paid by a local private client for a large diamond solitaire ring set with a very impressive 5.5 ct stone. The ring had been consigned by a local family and it did have some stranded inclusions which meant it was not of fantastic clarity under an eye glass but it looked fine to the naked eye. Other notable prices included a three stone diamond ring which made ÂŁ3,300 and a fine Victorian silver snuff box by Nathaniel
Mills which made ÂŁ400 in a very strong section of silver collectables. Smiths next antiques and collectables sale is on the 7th December and the Festive themed viewing 10am -7pm on Thursday 6th includes complimentary mulled wine and mince pies. For further information telephone 01531 821776 or visit www.smithsnewentsauctions. co.uk article by Rita Kearsey photos below: Nathaniel Mills silver snuff box (left) and five carat diamond solitaire ring

The last summer Tenants I
’ve bid a fond farewell to my wasps. They have been our constant companions all through the summer and what interesting house mates they have been. I shall miss the ‘purring’ sound they made when cooling their nest, wings of the occupants all thrumming at once. We would look up and half expect the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland to be grinning down on us. Friends and visitors gave dire warnings that our wasps would turn on us in some Hitchcock “Birds” type scenario; I even had to stand guard over a friend doing some work in the porch using power tools. The wasps didn’t so much as bother to come and check out what was going on.
collected from an outside rail and made into pulp. The result was something resembling a wave that had been turned to stone; fascinating and beautiful. Now they have all died except for the new queens who have been seeking places to hibernate in the house; I have gently escorted them to the open window not wishing a repeat of my hornet experience when I get into bed one night next spring, only to be stung by a sleepy queen wasp. When they awake they will begin the cycle of wasp life once more playing their part, however small, in the maintenance of life on this planet. Like the wasp colony the old year is dying. 2018 will, like all the years
before it, go out in a blaze of human over-consumption, from Halloween, Black Friday and finally the 25th of December. And then comes the eternal problem: what to do with those unwanted, unneeded purchases and presents and how to dispose of Halloween plastic costumes most of which can’t be recycled. In October The World Wildlife Fund reported that sixty percent of nature has been lost. This is worrying not least because nature gives us the air we breathe, food and medicines. And yet we are so careless with our natural world so quick to destroy the one thing we really do need. article & photographs by Geraldine Woods-Humphrey
‘You wait until September, they’ll get nasty then.’ we were told. September came and went and cordial relations between human and wasp were maintained despite the possibilities of insect intoxication from fermenting windfall apples. They did not see us as a danger. We didn’t bother them, and they didn’t bother us. So successful were these busy, gardeners’ friends, that by late summer they were beginning to construct an annex along the top of the kitchen window, a beautifully sculptured piece made from wood, tinyLedbury slivers of which Focuswere largely

ith the festive season fast approaching it is time to indulge, celebrate and fill our homes with lots of tasty treats. Unfortunately, it is only too common for our four-legged friends to join us in our Christmas celebrations and help themselves to that box of chocolates you got for Auntie Mavis because you didn’t know what else to get her.
Ho Ho Who ... HAS EATEN ALL THE CHOCOLATES!?!
‘Oh well, Auntie Mavis probably didn’t need them anyway’ I hear you say . . . but it’s not just chocolates that are dangerous for our pets. Whether it’s the kitten eating tinsel, or mince pies that go missing, there are many hidden dangers to our furry friends, from toxic foods to dangerous seasonal plants.
Vomiting and diarrhoea often follow but the main effect is damage to red blood cells and anaemia. r Artificial sweeteners contain xylitol and can result in dangerously low blood glucose levels. r Keep Christmas decorations well out of reach as cats, they particularly enjoy tinsel and baubles. r Decorative plants can also be toxic and advice should be
We have seen many potentially life threatening cases that could easily be avoided with a little extra care and these are our top tips to avoid a visit to the vets this Christmas. r Keep all edible presents under the tree out of reach until Christmas morning. Dark chocolates are particularly poisonous and can cause the most severe side effects. r Christmas pudding, cakes and mince pies can contain grapes, currants, raisins and sultanas and ingestion of even small quantities can cause severe kidney failure. r Onions and leeks are best kept on your plate and not into the tummies of your pets.

sought if your pets come into contact with poinsettia, holly, lilies, mistletoe and even ivy. If despite your best efforts an accident with a poisonous pudding occurs or the chocolate gets chomped, we are always at the end of a phone to help with any concerns and on call if needed. Finally, everyone at Leadon Vale Veterinary Centre would like to wish our friends and patients the very best festive period and a Happy New Year!

features hilarious anecdotes about her experiences rearing cows..
Ledbury Food Group introduces its new Book Group on Thursday 17th January. It’s an opportunity to “chew the cud” over some of the issues raised in current books relating to our food: where it comes from and how it is grown. Books such as “The Secret Life of Cows”, forwarded by Alan Bennett, which appeared last year, are full of discussion topics. Rosamund Young explores traditional and commercial farming methods and the book
“Pig” is the new book on the block. Written by Helen Browning, pig farmer and chief executive of the Soil Association, “Pig” is the first book we would like to introduce to the Food-Book Group as it features sustainable farming and food production. There is also a new book “Ciderology” by Herefordshire’s very own ciderologist Gabe Cook - so
