Hello Readers...

Ledbury Focus Publisher & Advertising Grapevine Publications (Worcestershire) Ltd 3 Rye Street • Birtsmorton • WR13 6AS Tel: 01684 833715  Mob: 07754 170286 info@grapevinepublications.co.uk www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

Editor Betty-Ann Ambury betty@grapevinepublications.co.uk

And welcome to the December 2016 and January 2017 issue of the Ledbury Focus. This year, for the first time, we are doing a joint publication for December and January, so don't forget to keep this copy until you get the next one at the beginning of February. Well, another year has flown by and amongst other things, we've had the Brazil Olympics, Brexit and most recently, the American elections ... what does 2017 have in store for us, I wonder? No doubt more excitement, both good and bad!

Contributors

Back to this month's magazine, and Age UK's article is all about remembering people who are alone over the festive period. If you know someone, young or old, who will be spending Christmas alone, spare a little time for them, even if it is just to invite them over for a cup of tea. There are of course lots of other ways you can help, so why not give Age UK a call and see what you can do to make Christmas this year a happy time for someone less fortunate.

Photography

And now all that's left for me to do is to thank all our wonderful advertisers, writers and distributors, without whom this magazine wouldn't be possible, and to wish you all - readers, writers, advertisers, distributors - a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Christmas: A TIME FOR GIVING T

he festive season is usually a time for celebration with those you love, but for too many older people it can reinforce feelings of loss, loneliness and of life passing them by.

• Ensure they have enough medication for the holiday period

Imagine spending Christmas Day completely alone, unable to leave your home and with nobody but your television for company. It’s a depressing thought, but it’s also the reality for thousands of older people across the country.

• Invite them to join you at some time over the festive season

People can become socially isolated for a variety of reasons and many older people go for long periods of time without seeing or speaking to anyone. Many families are widely dispersed and visiting older relatives can be challenging. But making the effort to keep in touch often makes an enormous difference to older people who tend to be stoical and reluctant to admit how lonely they are. We all have a role to play as individuals, families and communities to ensure older people feel valued and included and make the festive season something to look forward to. There are lots of ways that a little time and commitment can make a great difference to older people: • Help to write and send Christmas cards • Offer to help with shopping and ensure they have enough food in store and buy presents Ledbury Focus

• Pop round to have a cup of tea and chat • Give them a Christmas card and a small present

• You could check with local groups/churches to see if you can help out over the festive season (there may be lunches laid on that need help with cooking and serving or transport. We urge everyone to spare a little time and thought this Christmas for the older people in your community who are spending the festive period alone. Loneliness is not something that happens just at Christmas. Please consider becoming a volunteer with Age UK Hereford & Localities and help us to provide support all year round – an hour a week or month, or more. We have a range of volunteering opportunities that you will find enjoyable and rewarding.

Going for the Wine

T

he name Valpolicella conjures up visions of wonder, quality and grandeur. Valpolicella is a viticultural area in the province of Verona, Italy. Wines have been made in this area since at least the ancient Greeks inhabited. Valpolicella is the best recognised wine region in the northeastern Italy’s Veneto wine region and growth of the wine industry, in this area, expanded greatly during the 1960’s. I searched for a range of these wines, from a single company dedicated and committed to producing high-quality wines. The Bottega company has gained a lot of knowledge during the years producing excellent wines, with many prestigious awards being collected for their outstanding productions. I found Bottega to have a splendid, impressive collection of Valpolicella wines within their exceptional range of beverages and food products, all of which are produced with responsibility and a total respect for the areas’ environments and communities. Bottega Valpolicella Classico (DOC) is a very good production and popular with many. This smooth, dry, ruby red wine has a pleasant bouquet and good mouthfeel. Bottega Valpolicella Classico Superiore (DOC) is classed as a noble red wine.

12

This wine has an excellent structure and is chosen for numerous occasions and important events, by connoisseurs. Aged for 12-18 months in oak, this production has a great aroma, which leads enticingly to the full-bodied, velvety-textured taste. Bottega Ripasso Valpolicella Superiore (DOC) is a further example of high-quality productions from this company. The process of a double fermentation ensures the best aromas. Again, aged in oaks, this is a superbly-balanced, dry wine and is long on the palate. Bottega Amarone Della Valpolicella (DOCG) I found full-bodied and wellbalanced. A splendid, dry finish on the palate makes this powerful, smooth wine, a regular choice for numerous lovers of Valpolicella. These red Valpolicella wines utilise Corvina Rondinella and Molinara grape varieties to great advantage. For personal preferences these wines pair extremely well with red meats, rich fish (such as salmon and tuna), poultry, plus soft and hard cheeses, too. www.bottegaspa.com As always, Enjoy! One day I was walking along in the woods, when I came across this fairy who was all tangled up in the brambles. So I stopped and very carefully untangled her and set her free. She was so grateful, that she granted me one wish. Unfortunately, the fairy was rather hard of hearing, which how I came to have … a twelve inch pianist!”

Reading lesson

Hoss rode into town to buy a bull. After he’d bought the bull, he was left with only one dollar. This was a problem, because Hoss needed to send his wife a telegram to come with the truck and get the bull, but telegrams cost one dollar per word. Hoss thought for a while, then said to the telegram man, “Okay, I have my one word: comfortable.” “How is that going to tell her to come for you?” asked the telegram man. “Oh, she’s not the best reader,” said Hoss, “She’ll read it really slowly: com-for-ta-ble!”

Tips for staying well over the festive season Slow down It might seem counter-intuitive when you have so many things to do but remember the tortoise and the hare. Make time to rest and sleep It's winter, it's cold, the whole of nature is resting. Schedule in time for relaxation and good quality sleep. .

Sally Cartmell MCom BA (Hons) Lic.Ac. MFHT

Eat well (in between indulgence) We all fall off the health wagon a little over Christmas but try to compensate for the excess by keeping up the good stuff too. Juicing can be a great way to get more nutrients without having to eat more. Stay hydrated Drinking alcohol in superheated homes and pubs really dries out our bodies. Have a glass of water in between each eggnog to keep your fluid levels up.

Get some sunshine There may not be much of it about, but even more reason to make sure you get your vitamin D dose. Book in for an acupuncture treatment

Acupuncture has been proven to boost immunity and reduce anxiety: both important benefits during this hectic and germ-filled season. Take advantage of our special offer this month and receive the initial consultation for half price! That's ÂŁ35 instead of ÂŁ70! Christmas Wrapping

N

ot long ago someone said to me that if I wanted to see some really wonderful birds with fantastic colours I should go abroad because British birds were dull and boring. At the time I said nothing, feeling quite indignant on behalf of our birds. Granted we don’t have the Kentucky red cardinal with its bright red plumage, nor do we have flocks of rainbow coloured macaws, but we have never been a people known for our brashness, rather we are an understated lot and our birds are much the same. This does not mean British birds are without beauty, far from it. And to prove my point, here are a few of my favourites. What better time than Christmas to look out for some of our bright, feathered stars. The jay with it’s lovely dusky pink plumage must be our loveliest corvid and while we’re on the pinks, what about the bullfinch with its rich, salmon coloured breast? Nor will anyone convince me that the green woodpecker, in its 34 fine green and yellow livery,

with red cap, isn’t one of the smartest birds around, not to mention its cousin, the all too familiar greater spotted woodpecker. Even our more humble birds can put on a good show; the cock chaffinch in spring positively glows, and what about the pretty little goldfinch blessed also with a sweet song. Look closely at the blue tits we take so much for granted, their muted colours are quite charming. And the nation’s favourite, the robin, lights up even the dullest winter’s day with its red breast and cheerful chorus.

I could go on, but you can no doubt name some of your own, the sleek nuthatch perhaps, or the dapper magpie. All bring colour, like Christmas wrapping, to winter’s grey days. So, what do you think? Are our birds really so dull? I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year, and hopefully in 2017 I will be bringing you more news and observations about some of the wildlife visitors to my garden on the hills. Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

DECEMBER

Apple Time

I

f you have an apple tree that has not been looked at for years, or one that has been pruned but you’re unsure what to do or how much to take off, here are some pruning techniques to point you in the right direction. Let’s start off with a tree that has not been pruned and look at ways to encourage better growth and increase yield. Apples trees that have not been touched for a long time suffer from air not circulating

40

around the tree. A good way to tell if this is the case is to stand by the trunk of the tree and look up. What you’re looking for is sky. Back when I was a student we were told if you can’t throw your hat up and out of the top of the tree then how was air going to move around. And up to a certain point this is right. Also you are looking to take out any inward pointing or crossing branches. Once this is done it should automatically open up the centre of the tree. Pruning a branch to set fruit Leaf buds looks small and pointed; blossom buds are bigger and more rounded. If you pinch out the end of a branch it will put on what are called water shoots (a very strong up right growth with just leaf buds). By cutting the water shoots off at this time of the year to 3 to 5 buds, next year they will turn into blossom buds. To keep this up, the tree would need to be pruned every year. Setting a branch Once a second year branch sets fruit, the weight of the fruit pulls the branch over and makes it set at that angle. It will then normally grow a water shoot off this bend. If the tree is too low to walk under or mow near, this joint is the best place to take the branch back and

still keep the weeping effect of the tree. If your tree has had a damaged branch and is a little one-sided, take a water shoot in its first or second year and use string to pull it over into the gap to create an umbrella shape. It will then set into this position. Things to be done in November time in your garden: With fruit trees put grease bands around the trunk of your tree about two feet up. Follow the instructions on the box. Grease bands aim to stop the female codling moth laying its eggs near blossom before the fruit forms. Prune your roses and prick off this year’s leaves and burn them (do not compost them). I will cover more on this next month. Turn your compost over. The aim is to mix everything well to add moisture and air, both

essential to speeding up the process. Try to move thick material like roots to the centre where it will break down quicker. Don’t forget to cover your compost, for example with a plastic sheet kept in place by something heavy like bricks. Next month I will look at rose pruning.

If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. The Ultimate Sacrifice Made By So Many L

edbury Town was bathed in brilliant sunshine for the Service of Remembrance held on Sunday and hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects. The parade featured young and not so young from dozens of organisations, including schools, scouts, brownies, armed forces, police, fire services, ambulance and many more. The Ledbury Brass band played magnificently, and the lone bugler performed the

traditional 'last post' to complete silence in the Town Centre. Wreaths were laid by Sir James Hervey Bathurst, MP Bill Wiggin, Ledbury Town Mayor, Debbie Baker, HMS Ledbury and many others representing the range and scope of societies within the community. It was a moving and proud moment for people everywhere as they gathered together to honour the ultimate sacrifice made by so many. Article and photographs by Jan Long

OUR SPECIES of the month:

The Long-Tailed Tit

T This year, the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust is running a new series taking a closer look at one key species of flora or fauna each month. For December, we are looking at the longtailed tit or Aegithalos caudatus . . .

56

he long-tailed tit is a very small, round-bodied bird. Its total length is around 14cm – of which the tail is over half the length of its body! The adults have black wings with pinkish markings and a long, narrow, black tail with white edges. The head has a white crown and a broad, black eyestrip that extends down the back of the neck. Long-tailed tits have an undulating flight and bounce about from one garden to the next during the winter. They busily flit from branch to branch, looking for insects and can sometimes be seen clinging upside-down to thin twigs. They feed mainly on insects, larvae and spiders, but will also eat berries

and seeds during autumn-winter. They’re also increasingly being seen feeding from peanut feeders in gardens. These very sociable and acrobatic birds announce their arrival with their soft, twittering song. They have high-pitched "tsee-tsee-tsee" calls, punctuated by more percussive, clipped notes ("tsirrup"). In autumn and winter, long-tailed tits form flocks which roost communally. This behaviour during the winter helps these small birds to conserve body heat. When the breeding season begins, individual pairs will attempt to rear their own young but, if a pair fails, they will help at

the nest of a close relative instead. This process of cooperative breeding leads to greater success. Where to see them Long-tailed tits are found in deciduous woodland, hedgerows, scrubland, parks and gardens throughout the UK (except for the north and west of Scotland). How to help long-tailed tits to thrive They need reliable access to energy-rich food during the short winter days. Small seeds, bread crumbs, finely grated cheese and peanut fragments will be taken, but the birds are particularly partial to suet-based products. The small beak of a long-tailed tit isn’t able to handle large seeds. Being very small, long-tailed tits are vulnerable to prolonged periods of harsh winter weather. Overnight, they will bed down together in a thick shrub, such as hawthorn, to conserve their energy, so having such plants in your garden could be of benefit to them. Get in touch If you spot a long-tailed tit – or any other species - please do let us know! You can submit records online at www.herefordshirewt.org, email them to records@herefordshirewt.co.uk or write to Lower House Farm, Ledbury Road, Hereford, HR1 1UT. Ledbury Focus

Vet Talk

with Martin Leith BVetMed MRCVS

Have yourself a merry, Festive Season trouble-free pet Christmas

A

s the festive season approaches, we can all look forward to spending time with our friends, family, and our pets. Whilst we, quite rightly, treat our pets at Christmas, it is important to be aware that Christmas and New Year can present some hazards to our pets’ health. Many festive foods are toxic to dogs and warrant rapid veterinary intervention if ingested. These foods include raisins, grapes, chocolate, macadamia nuts, and also some savoury foods such as blue cheese, onions and garlic. If your pet is partaking in the Christmas trimmings, be sure that there are no small bones lurking in their portion. If you are worried that your pet has eaten something he shouldn’t, don’t hesitate in calling our 24-hour out-of-hours telephone line. When decking the halls, remember the needles from Christmas trees can become stuck in paws, and chewing the needles/branches can cause tummy upset. Try to discourage your pet from playing in or around the tree to prevent this! Ledbury Focus

Gingerbread Cake with Caramel Biscuit Icing This sumptuous Christmas bake is covered in a decadent icing, finished with gingerbread biscuits and dusted with desiccated coconut 'snow' INGREDIENTS For the Gingerbread Cake 150ml full-fat milk 3 tbsp black treacle 225ml vegetable oil 375g plain flour 3 tsp baking powder 1½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 375g light brown soft sugar 1½ tsp ground cinnamon 1½ tsp ground ginger ¼ tsp ground cloves 300ml buttermilk 3 large eggs 1 tbsp dark rum or milk 1½ tsp vanilla extract For the Caramel Biscuit Icing 250g slightly salted butter 600g icing sugar 300g full-fat cream cheese 2 tsp vanilla bean extract 200g smooth caramelised biscuit spread 50g desiccated coconut silver edible glitter (optional) For the Gingerbread Biscuits 175g dark muscovado sugar 85g golden syrup 100g slightly salted butter 350g plain flour 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 tbsp ground ginger 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 egg, beaten 300g fondant icing sugar 64

METHOD To make the cake Measure the milk and treacle into a saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer and stir until combined, then set aside to cool. • Grease 3 x 20cm loose-bottomed cake tins with a little oil and  line with baking parchment. Heat oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4. • Sieve the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, sugar,  spices and ½ teaspoon salt into a large bowl. Mix together with a large whisk until you have an even, sandy-textured mixture. • In a jug, whisk the oil, buttermilk, eggs, rum and vanilla. Add  the milk and treacle mixture, and mix well. • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry, and whisk into a smooth  batter. • Divide between the tins and bake for 25-30 minutes until a  skewer inserted into the centre of the cakes comes out clean. You may have to swap the cakes over to cook evenly, but don’t do this until they’ve been cooking for at least 20 minutes. • Cool the cakes in the tins for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire  rack, peel off the parchment and leave to cool completely. • Once cooled, wrap the sponges in cling film and store in a cool  place for 4 days, or freeze for up to 2 months – the texture and flavour will be all the better for it. • 

To make the icing Put the butter and half the icing sugar in a large bowl. Whisk together with an electric hand whisk until smooth. • Add the remaining icing sugar, the cream cheese, vanilla extract  and biscuit spread. Mix again until smooth and evenly mixed.  • Put half the icing in another bowl and set aside. Use the rest to stack the cakes and cover the entire outside in a thin layer. • Chill the cake for 30 mins and the remaining icing for 20 mins  (remove the icing from the fridge 10 mins before using). • Use the remaining icing to cover the cake. Smooth the sides but  leave peaks and dips on top for your snow scene. • Sprinkle generously with desiccated coconut, a dusting of sieved  icing sugar and some edible glitter (if using), then decorate the top and sides with gingerbread shapes. • 

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: betty@grapevinepublications.co.uk

To make the biscuits Put the sugar, golden syrup and butter in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer, then bubble for 1-2 minutes, stirring until well combined. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes.  • Tip the flour, bicarbonate of soda and spices into a large bowl. Add the warm syrup mixture and the egg, stir to bring everything together, then gently knead in the bowl until smooth and streak-free. • Wrap in cling film and chill for at least 30 minutes.  • Remove the dough from the fridge and leave at  room temperature until softened. Heat oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6 and line two baking trays with baking parchment. •  Roll out the dough and cut out a variety of shapes (Christmas trees, house, hearts - you’ll need about 15 hearts) and arrange these on the trays.

• 

Bake the biscuits for 10-12 minutes, swapping the trays over halfway through cooking. Leave to cool on the trays, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

• 

Mix the icing sugar with enough water to make a thick icing. Put in a piping bag fitted with a small nozzle, then decorate the biscuits as shown, using edible glitter (optional).

• 

Leave the icing to dry for 1-2 hours, then use the biscuits to decorate the cake.

• 

Ledbury Focus

To decorate the cake  • Place the trees and house on top of the cake and push the hearts into the icing.  •

If you are not eating the cake within a few hours, store it in the fridge, but bring back to room temperature before serving. Will keep for 2 days.

m o r f s d r a c t s Po Hi, I’m Sandie

I

live in Ledbury and would like to introduce you to a series of sixpostcard sized stories that I’ve written. They are all inspired by places, or events that happened in or around our beautiful town. The first five stories move through history, recording a moment in time from an ancient pre-historic past to the nineteenth century. The last postcard is different. It’s not set in the past. It simply asks a question of us all about the sort of future that we will create. I don’t really know what started me thinking about writing the ‘postcards,’ except that we are fortunate, I think, to live in Ledbury. From our town, in every direction that we travel, we are surrounded by beautiful countryside and a rich history.

66

the Past An unknown woman of Roman Kenchester

This story arose from a headline in a local newspaper. A team of Archaeologists were excavating the site of what was once the Roman town of Magnis, now modern Kenchester, which is just outside Hereford. They discovered the skeleton of what would have been a tall and powerful woman. Her remains had been buried outside the Roman graveyard. Not much else is known about her. That’s a little sad I think.

Busy Times for Ledbury Community Brass Band

L

edbury Community Brass Band has music in its blood and is looking forward to a busy schedule over the next couple of months. Following on from a very successful performance at Ledbury’s Carnival this year, the band can next be seen performing at Ledbury’s Royal British Legion Remembrance Service on Sunday 13th November. For the first time the band will play for the full march past replacing the piped music which has been heard in previous years. Lead cornet player Martin Price will play The Last Post. Two weeks later, on 26th Novenber, the band can be found under the Market House leading the carol singing and festivities at the switching on of Ledbury’s Christmas Lights. A mid-week performance at Castlemorton Church follows on 8th December for the annual Christmas Concert where funds are being raised in aid of RETT UK, a charity local to Castlemorton which provides invaluable support to families with girls who suffer from Rett Syndrome, a rare and devastating brain disorder. Shortly after, on the 11th December, the band can be heard at the Town Carol Service in St Michael and All Angels Church. Ledbury Focus

Plans are also underway to play at various locations and dates in and around Ledbury to get people in the Christmas spirit whilst shopping during the day and enjoying evening drinks. Great excitement builds towards the Band’s very own ‘first’, a Christmas Concert at Ledbury’s Market Theatre on Sunday 18th December kicking off at 7.30pm featuring a mix of carols and other Christmas favourites with entertainment in mind. Tickets can be booked either directly from the band or through the Market Theatre website at http:// themarkettheatre.com/ The band was formed in 2010 with the aim of providing Ledbury with a brass band to entertain and represent the area in local events and further afield and it is going from strength to strength. Musical Director, Colin Herbert, a graduate from the renowned Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall has a long history of brass band excellence and has compiled a Christmas programme with entertainment in mind. Please see our website, at http://www.lcbb.org.uk, for more information or if you are interested in joining. The band looks forward to seeing you at all their events.

Christmas

CRIME & SAFETY ADVICE Christmas Crime Advice • Try and place your Christmas tree out of sight of street fronted windows • Don't display gifts under the Christmas tree until the last possible moment. • Where possible, leave the buying of expensive gifts e.g. TV's, Computers, IPODs, to the last moment. • When out celebrating the festive season, use timer switches for lights and radios to give the impression someone is still at home - remember to close your curtains. • Property mark all your new electrical and valuable gifts. Register your gifts with www.immobilise.com (its free) • When Christmas is all over don't leave the boxes to your valuable gifts out by the rubbish bin, Take them directly to your local household recycling centre. You don't want everyone to know what you have had. • Do not store Christmas presents in outdoor wooden sheds

Drink Drive Warning With the festive season underway motorists are being reminded of the dangers of drink driving.

Keep safe online this Christmas • Safeguard your payment. Never transfer money directly into the seller's account. Pay by card on a secure payment page, by cheque or cash in person. • Make sure payment pages are secure and you can see https:// and a padlock or key in the browser window. • A credit card, rather than a debit card, gives you more chance of getting your money back if there are problems. • Remember Wi-Fi in public places is not always secure - even if you have to enter a code. • Think: after you have finished your online shopping or banking session remember to log out.

Vicki Bristow, Communications Manager at the Safer Roads Partnership, says:

74

There is no foolproof way of calculating how much you can drink and remain under the limit, or knowing how much an individual person can drink and still drive safely. Importantly, it is hard to calculate how long alcohol may stay in your body if you are driving the morning after so the safest option if you are driving is to drink no alcohol at all. Over that last three years in the West Mercia policing area, 10 people were killed and 108 seriously injured following collisions where drink or drugs were recorded as a contributory factor. Officers will be out enforcing drink drive laws across the region. These enforcement checks are carried on all types of roads and at all times of day and night, including the morning commute to combat those that are still over the limit the morning after.

"There are still people out there who feel they can gamble with drinking and driving and think they know how much the limit is but the simple fact is there is only one way of being sure that you are safe to drive and that is not to drink at all. Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive. We would also ask people to consider other options when out drinking over the festive season, public transport, taxis and sharing nominated drivers are easy to arrange - drinking and driving simply isn't worth the risk. Pedestrians are also being encouraged to stay safe during the festive season and to plan safe routes home and to drink responsibly."

Superintendent Daryn Elton for Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police comments: "Cracking down on those who take drugs or drink and then drive is a year round commitment for us. However, we are very aware the festive season can present opportunities where people are tempted to drive after taking drugs or drinking. To combat this, extra patrols will be conducted in the run up to and over Christmas and New Year, in a bid to tackle those who commit the unacceptable act of drinking or drug driving.

Logs For sale

Worryingly, and despite many warnings over the years about the dangers of drink/drug driving, there are still far too many reckless drivers ignoring the devastating consequences. Alcohol and drugs both affect your ability to judge speed and distances accurately and slow down your reaction time. We're urging people to think hard about the consequences that a collision could lead to." New SNT Member Ledbury Safer Neighbourhood Team would like to welcome PC 3381 Sarah Ransome-Williams

Beautiful Christmas Trees

ith Christmas soon arriving there is always a mad rush to purchase all the presents, decorations, and of course the Christmas tree. I absolutely love the smell of the Douglass Fir trees, and when my children were small we always had one, especially as they are so well formed and look great decorated.

Funny stories aside, have you ever looked into the length of time it takes your Christmas trees to grow, or the problems the producers go through to actually grow them. I spoke to one Market Gardener, Gary Andrews, from Abbey Road Christmas Trees. He has been producing Christmas trees for nine years, and he says he has never had such a learning curve.

The last of Gary's problems is poachers. It must be heartbreaking for him to arrive at his field to find his trees have been stolen.

Christmas Cheese Menu by Andrew Brooks

S

o what's the best cheese to buy at Christmas time? There are some fantastic cheeses out there at this time of year and some are very seasonal. So let's start of with some good basic cheeses: Cropwell Bishop Stilton, Snowdonia Black Bomber, Hereford Hop, Hawes Wensleydale & Cranberry and a nice soft Somerset Brie.

Irish Cashel Blue, made in Tipperary in Ireland, a soft pressed creamy blue cheese. As for a seasonal cheese this time of year, between November and January you can get a French Vacherin Mont d’Or - a soft creamy cheese with a wonderful sweet taste from the summer milking. All of these cheeses are available at The Cheeseboard along with 70 others.

For something a bit different why not try some Cave Aged Cheddar Gorge, matured in the caves in Cheddar - there are only 20 shops in the UK allowed to sell it. Or how about some

At this time of the year we are always very busy with cheeses, cooked

meats, local wines and ciders, as well as our Christmas hampers made to order with delivery to anywhere in the UK for just ÂŁ6.95. To take a look at our shop just go to Google Maps and take a virtual shop tour or scan the QR Code to go straight there.

When conservation and wildlife adviser John Clarke put a small and unobtrusive advertisement in a selection of parish magazines, the response was remarkable . . . John's book is a tribute to the Spotted Flycatcher and may well help to halt its decline. He is The Flycatcher Man.

This fascinating little book has proved to be very popular and would make an ideal gift for any bird-watching enthusiast.
