Hello Readers... ... and welcome to the Christmas issue of the Ledbury Focus.
Another year has flown by and in a few short weeks, we'll be welcoming in 2016.

But before that of course, there's still all the Christmas shopping to do, puddings to make and turkeys to eat! And talking of puddings, I hope you have fun making and eating the Chocolate, Orange & Cranberry Red Velvet Bombe on page 64 ... it really is delicious! As always at this time of the year, there's lots of festive events, so look out for them as you browse through the magazine, and of course check the Events page. Christmas is a time for giving and sharing, so whilst you are planning your celebrations, spare a thought for those who are on their own, especially the elderly. If you would like to share Christmas with someone less fortunate, please give Age UK a call they'd love to hear from you. And now all that's left is for me to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Keep well and see you again in 2016!

Do you know someone who is lonely?
T
here is a lot in the news at present about older people being lonely. The fabulous new advert from John Lewis, the Age UK ‘No one should have no one at Christmas’ campaign and the local Waitrose fundraising programme to help support lonely isolated people this winter are just three you may have seen. The facts about loneliness are really worrying. Loneliness is considered as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and it costs our health service about £12,000 per person to deal with the consequences! Here at Age UK Herefordshire & Worcestershire we have embarked
Our ‘Reconnections’ programme across Worcestershire has identified 35,000 older people who see their TV as the main form of companionship and about 11,000 of those who may not have spoken to anyone for a month.
What you may not realise is that when someone reaches a certain stage of loneliness, they need a bit more support than just the occasional chat from a neighbour or the postman. Most people need a little help and support to reconnect with their communities. The reasons for loneliness are many – bereavement; decreasing mobility; less transport access and poor health to name just a few.
In Herefordshire there are some 10,000 people seen as lonely. Our ‘Keep in Touch in Herefordshire’ programme is currently a pilot in Ross and the surrounding area. It is identifying social isolation a key driver of the condition.
If you know of someone whom you think might be lonely, give us a call to discuss it further on 01905 740953 or email us at reconnections@ageukhw.org.uk or volunteer and help us tackle the problem practically.
on a couple of significant new programmes to address what is fast becoming the most prevalent long term condition to affect communities across the country.

A Basketball Baptism of Fire for the Leadonites Kids
H
aving only been formed in May of this year, Leadonites Basketball got to play their first ever match when the U17s travelled to play Malvern Hills Buzzards, and it could hardly have been a harder first opponent as Buzzards are reigning Men’s Worcester League Champions! Anybody that knows local basketball would expect Buzzards to win by a sizable margin leaving no pressure of expectation on the Leadonites kids. Their pre-match instructions were simple: keep the level of effort high, play and act as a team and enjoy the occasion. Leadonites started well, sinking two 3-pointers in the first few minutes, but the elation was short lived as Buzzards took control with their skill, strength and speed winning out considerably in each quarter of the match. Inevitably the final score was a resounding 83-15 win for Buzzards but the heavy defeat does not tell the whole story as Leadonites continued to stay competitive throughout the duration of the match. On offence the younger team passed and moved well enough to create many scoring opportunities but were simply unable to convert those chances into points. At the end of the match Coach Chalkley (Leadonites) was very pleased with everyone’s efforts, “Pre-match I told the players that this was a learning experience and that I would purposely under coach them on this occasion. All ten players got good game time minutes and everyone gave me their all when out on the court. We had to start somewhere and few teams will have had such a baptism of fire and still managed to come out the other end smiling.”

AW Parker started their coal delivery service in Herefordshire and Worcestershire one year ago and business is thriving. Nick explains, “A W Parker are well established within the Forest of Dean and it’s an exciting challenge to continue to expand the delivery area. We have lots of experience and knowledge within the company, which employs six family members.” Nick’s wife Melanie, whose great-grandfather started the business almost a hundred years ago, adds: “I have been bookkeeping for the family business for over fifteen years and it’s great to be part of the expansion and continuation of the family business.” A W Parker Coal Merchants supply quality British house coal and smokeless fuel from Wales. They provide excellent value for money whether you need coal, anthracite, charcoal or manufactured fuels. Kindling and nets of logs are also available for delivery.

Ledbury in Bloom won a 9th consecutive RHS gold award for the town this year
T
he Judges said “What a fabulous place Ledbury is, amazing community efforts galvanized by a small Bloom team that has produced results over and above expectations. Horticulture ranging from perhaps the best hanging basket display at any hospital in the region to the embryonic efforts of the tiny home education group. The Masters House has finally been revealed, a real community space with its long history expertly brought to life by two incredibly knowledgeable guides. Being given the opportunity to view the achievements made by the residents of Prince Rupert Driver was a privilege. Ledbury in Bloom has struck gold yet again. Well Done. The Ledbury in Bloom Committee is very pleased that as a result of all the hard work put in by volunteers, the very high standards have been maintained this year. We are tremendously grateful for the generosity of our
Ledbury Focus
sponsors and the support of other groups and individuals within the town without whom Ledbury in Bloom could not function. However, Ledbury in Bloom faces a crisis. This year we have lost three valued members of our Committee filling essential roles. Next November will see both the Chair and the Vice Chair complete their three year tenures. Add to this the lack of volunteer trowels on the ground, and we have a serious manpower crisis. In short unless a number of new volunteers come forward to help us Ledbury in Bloom will cease to exist in 12 months time.
We are making plans for 2016 at present. The theme that we are working on at present is “Roses Grow on you”. This will require a bigger work force than we have at present and we would ask that anyone that has an hour a week to spare come and help us. No horticultural knowledge is necessary just a trowel and a willingness to come and work with the team for your town. Please call 01531 635380, if you can offer any time at all for weeding, edging, pruning and planting, either in your own time or as part of a group.
We regularly receive calls from the general public complaining about unkempt areas within the town and asking what LIB are doing about it. Unfortunately the answer is always, ”what we can”. Our working parties are often only 4 or 5 strong and we are seriously over stretched as it is. We are a purely volunteer group and not a Council group as some people think.

Have yourself a merry, trouble-free pet Christmas It’s that time of year again when we prepare our houses for the festive season, putting up decoration and filling the house with lots of tasty goodies. Unfortunately many of our pets can’t resist joining in this festive fun. Whether it’s the cat that eats tinsel, the puppy that pinches those beautifully wrapped dark chocolates form under the tree or the dog that eats the Christmas cake that you have only just finished decorating! These are all potentially life threatening cases that we have seen that fan easily be avoided with a bit of thought and extra care. Top tips for a trouble-free pet Christmas: Dogs are very good at sniffing out edible presents under or on the tree. Keep these out of reach until Christmas morning. Dark chocolates are very poisonous, even a small amount can be very serious. Be careful with flowers and plants, Lilly pollen (even when a cat just brushes up against it) and Mistletoe are both nasty poisons. Grapes and raisins are poisonous for dogs so keep an eye on those mince pies. Keep Christmas decorations well out of reach as cats, and especially kittens love those sparkling baubles. However tempting it is to give them a big Christmas treat – beware, too much in one go tends to have an unfortunate ending!

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
Movement in the Garden T
here are various options for getting movement into a garden, some are really obvious like a water feature, others are really more subtle such as encouraging wildlife in for, example birds, butterflies, etc., that can also bring the element of movement in. Plants are another instrument for bringing movement into a garden, the movement of leaves and the resulting rustling sounds they can bring, for example bamboo blowing in the wind, is an excellent way of bringing movement into a very small space. 32
Water features are a good option. You don’t necessarily have to install a pond to create a water feature, just water bubbling over a stone creates a rippling sound and promotes a relaxing environment. This is a cheap option with just some outside power needed. In turn, a pond with a waterfall can bring in birds as they will be encouraged to come in and bathe, bringing additional movement into a garden. The Japanese are experts in using the element of water in a garden and have a tipping water feature called a Deer Scarer, which is a bamboo chute that fills up with water from a pump and when full tips back and knocks against a rock. Giving movement and sound but not all the time. Increasing wildlife into a garden is reasonably easy: you can feed the animals to bring them in, i.e. birds, or create an environment for them to breed and nest, such as bird boxes. However, having a cat or a pet in a garden would have a detrimental effect on attempting this. If you are really restricted for space and large rustling leaves aren't really an option, but you still have some planting in the garden, putting things like windmills, wind chimes, suspended mobiles, etc. can bring in sound and movement. Nowadays you can also get things that move and are operated by sunlight. Solar powered

ornaments such as fluttering butterflies will rotate when the sun shines on the power cell making it flutter and move around. These are only a few pounds to buy from a garden centre, but will add some interest reasonably easily and cheaply into a very still garden. Planting: I have already mentioned bamboos as a way of adding movement, but some trees have the same effect. Anything with large leaves that can be caught by the breeze will obviously move around, for example an Indian Bean Tree (Catalpa bignonioides). Alternatively you can bring dead wood back to life, for example if you have a dead tree in the garden, rather than taking it out you could grow a vine up it. When the tendrils develop and hang off it they will then move around in the wind and make the space look alive again. This can also be done with a rose, a good strong climbing rose, a Kiftsgate or a Rambling Rector. These are very big climbing roses that will scramble up a dead tree and easily take over.
Another variety is a Banksia Rose which is a non prickly and highly scented rose. Any of these varieties will clamber all over the dead wood and give the visual appearance that the tree has been given a second life. If you have a pond then adding some reeds around the outside will contribute to movement when it is windy. Obviously make sure you get the correct ones, you don’t want something that is going to take over the pond or the roots are going to puncture the liner or base of the pond. If you have a straight forward flower bed and you want to create some movement in there, some fine grasses strategically placed around would be a good recommendation. These will give the impression that they are almost floating and moving around amongst the plants when there is a breeze. Next month I will look at arches and wooden structures.
If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Green or Brown? That is the question.
D
rama has many different guises in my garden, played out by a diverse range of wildlife individuals. The buzzards and sparrow hawks provide action packed scenes; predator and prey where one must kill and the other escape to survive. A few days ago I watched a wood pigeon in the orchard succumb to the talons of a buzzard, swooping silently from the branches of an apple tree on to its unsuspecting victim. These moments both thrill and sadden, when the sparrow hawk fails to catch a blue tit as it sweeps in as if from nowhere, I’m relieved. Yet the power of the predator, its speed and skill in flight are truly exciting to see.
Not all events are so violent or so dramatic, but all are to be treasured though some seem more precious than others. While eating breakfast one morning in late June I was looking out at the flowerbed in front of the house. Its something I do often, not only because of the pleasure and satisfaction of gazing at the flowers, the fruits of much hard labour, but because an awful lot goes on there. I’ve watched fledgling wrens hiding beneath the 36
leaves, bank voles scurrying amongst the foliage, and hunting hornets. On this particular morning it was a butterfly made me grab my camera and rush outside leaving my tea to go cold. I’d seen a fritillary. To non-experts, including me, fritillaries are the ‘little brown jobs’ of the butterfly world, difficult to identify. I was hoping that this would be the High Brown but I wasn’t sure. That was back in June. In September I was chatting to a gentleman from Herefordshire Wildlife Trust and the fritillary came up in the conversation. He studied my photograph and declared it to be a Dark Green fritillary. Not as exciting as the High Brown, but nonetheless
pleasing to see. However, on further research I discovered that the two butterflies are almost indistinguishable unless you can see the underside of the wings. My paddocks are full of violets, the food plant for the larva of both butterflies and there’s dead bracken for them to bask on in the spring. Can I dare to hope that my butterfly was a High Brown? Gardens are becoming increasingly important for wildlife and as most of us have one we can all do our bit at creating a wildlife haven. The benefits to our own wellbeing and that of the creatures we help are enormous and worth the effort. Whichever butterfly it was, to know that my own small flower bed is doing its bit for conservation is very satisfying.

Ledbury and District Pedestrian Access and Cyclist Forum M any residents in the Ledbury area will be unaware of this voluntary group and what it is for and what it has achieved. It has been in existence for a number of years and now is the only one in the County, having outlived a similar organization that was based in Hereford City. The opening of the library in the refurbished Masters House in St.Katherines, seemingly would have no connection with the group. Not so! One of the aims of the group is to ensure that no section of the community is disadvantaged. The library, sited in the Barrett Browning Institute building, contravened the Disability Discrimination Act as it was only accessible via the steps in Bye Street and was on more than one floor. Not only did disabled and wheelchair users find this an obstacle but also mothers with young children. The newly relocated library enables access as does the upper floor of the Masters House and brings a successful conclusion to the pressure from the group.
44
There are a number of features around Ledbury town centre which have been promoted, particularly for the disabled. Dropped kerbs at road junctions for wheelchair and scooter users. Tactile surfacing at all crossings for the blind and partially sighted. Level access to shops and community use premises are particularly difficult to execute in historic Ledbury. With the enthusiastic cooperation of banks and shopkeepers there are few inaccessible premises in our area. Installation of hearing loops in banks, community buildings, post offices and churches makes for inclusion and does not create an obvious distinction between those having a hearing impairment. Pavement advertising and street furniture are a particular problem for those with visual impairment. Ensuring a relatively clear path along the shop front lines needs constant monitoring. (Blind and partially sighted do not follow kerb lines for very obvious reasons). Cyclists contribute greatly to the group on several fronts whilst promoting greater use of this form of transport. Ensuring that safety
is paramount with the mix of cycles and vehicular traffic. Creating cycle ways and ensuring safe cycle parking both in the town and now at selected rural bus and rail stops. Road surface conditions are very noticeable to cyclists and these are regularly reported to the appropriate authorities. Planning applications are monitored to ensure that there are accessible toilet facilities and level access. All of this work doesn’t just happen. There is a small dedicated group of volunteers working with equally responsible Hereford Council officers. Currently we are chaired by an Integrated Travel Officer from Hereford Council and also have representation from the Locality Steward. Two from the cyclists forum, one from Community First and two experienced former councilors make up the committee. If you think that you could offer expertise, especially if you have a disability, please contact the group. Either via Ledbury town council or email to:pacf_ledbury@communities. herefordshire.co.uk

Our Ledbury Garden
A
group of families are turning a neglected municipal garden ( The Millennium Garden) in Bye Street, Ledbury into a wildlife garden for people and pollinators alike. The plants have been grown to attract all types of pollinators, also there is a small bug hotel for overwintering insects and log pile to encourage beetles. Laurie aged 10 says, "We hope it is a nicer place for people to sit, relax, and look at. From planting seeds, chopping down a huge bush to painting walls, there really was a lot work involved to make this garden pretty again! What we like is to get outside and just and do what needs to be done. " Joe aged 7 echoed the general feeling of all the children, "Don’t just laze around, get out there and be wild! There are 4 families involved, with the age range of the children from 6 to 15. So far the group have had donations of plants from Countrywide Ledbury, paint from local people, help from a local person with their trailer, seeds from the Grow Wild Campaign lead by Royal Botanic Garden, Kew 'to transform local spaces, by sowing, growing and enjoying native wild flowers', and Friends of the Earth 'The Bee Cause' campaign. It is an ongoing project and so far we have received positive feed back and minimal vandalism; we hope the garden will inspire community spirit as well as helping create habitat for declining pollinators. Donations of masonry paint or money to buy some, or getting involved so we can make more 'green spaces' would be very gratefully received.

The Christmas Tree Fairy Santa Claus was having a really bad day. Mrs Santa was in bed with the flu. The elves were playing up and had gone on strike for more pay. The replacement elves were much slower and were behind with the toy making.

Two of the reindeer were pregnant, two more were lame, another two had kicked down the fence and had disappeared into the forest, and to top it all, Rudolph's nose had turned black! Then he discovered that one of the runners on his sleigh had come off and the bells were missing. What I need is a good strong cup of coffee, he thought, but when he opened the cupboard, the jar fell out and the coffee spilt all over the floor! By now Santa was thoroughly fed up. He went to fetch the broom to sweep up the mess, but found that the mice had chewed off all the bristles!

At that moment there was a knock at the front door. Upon opening it, Santa was confronted by a beautiful Fairy holding a lovely 13:08 Christmas tree. "Good Morning, Santa" she trilled "Isn't it a perfectly gorgeous day? I have brought you this beautiful tree, isn't it lovely? Where would you like me to stick it?" … and that is why by tradition we have a Fairy sitting on top of the Christmas tree.

DECKING THE HALLS
from Father Christmas to Mother Nature
F
rom hearty renditions of ‘The Holly and the Ivy’ to robins on Christmas cards, nature and wildlife have always played a big part in Christmas and New Year festivities. This is little wonder since these celebrations date back to a time when our daily lives were wholly governed by the seasons and our wealth and happiness by the resulting harvests.
56
But while many of us bemoan the increasing commercialisation of Christmas, there are many traditional features of Christmas which date from this time that are still practised – and others which are being revived. The greenery of Christmas is at the heart of our festive decorations. While many meanings, both Christian and pagan, have been attached to various species, their arrangement and placement, evergreen species all represent the promise of new life to come after the dark winter months.
The forager’s code applies as much to sourcing Christmas decorations as it does to food! Trees and plants provide shelter to many birds, mammals and insects over the winter while anything with berries also provides a vital food source. Only bring in branches bearing berries from places where there is a plentiful supply and only take a few stems from any one place. Mistletoe, the instigator of thousands of Christmas kisses, is also a winter treat for many birds such as the mistle thrush. Once the berries have passed through the thrush,

the indigestible berries can be seen suspended from branches by a sticky serum which is how mistletoe spreads to new trees. To some minds, this creates a rather pretty decoration though the effect is somewhat ruined by knowing its origins! After Christmas comes another rousing winter event - a local orchard wassail! Wassails were originally held to ward off evil spirits from orchards and ensure a fruitful harvest. The activities which take place as part of the wassail vary across the country – and even from village to village. Proceedings are usually led by a ‘butler’ or wassail king and queen and can include shouts of “Wassail” and “drink hail”, a procession, drinking mulled cider together and a ceremonial ‘feeding’ of the trees or tree spirits with cider and toast! Herefordshire Wildlife Trust will be holding their own Wassail at their Lower House Farm orchard in Tupsley, on the edge of Hereford on Friday 15th January. We hope you can join us there for songs and cider and some post-Christmas cheer! Full details can be found on our website www.herefordshirewt.co.uk. Ledbury Focus

Chocolate Orange & Cranberry Red Velvet Bombe This stunning festive dessert makes a great alternative to Christmas pudding, with a hidden cream cheese and cranberry filling.
INGREDIENTS For the Cake 175g butter, very soft
METHOD •
Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Grease 2 x 16cm hemisphere cake tins, then dust with flour and shake out the excess. Stand the tins on two ramekins placed on a baking tray to hold them steady.
•
Put the cake ingredients in a large mixing bowl, add a pinch of salt and whisk together until smooth and evenly coloured bright red. Divide the mixture between the two tins and bake for 45 minutes.
•
Remove from the oven, cool in the tins for 10 mins, then tip onto a wire rack and leave until completely cold.
•
Meanwhile, make the chocolate-orange ganache and the filling. Pour the cream into a saucepan, add the orange zest and heat until just steaming.
•
Put half the white chocolate in a bowl, and the dark and milk chocolates in another bowl. Pour 50ml of the hot cream over the white chocolate (strain it if the orange zest is in big strands), and the remaining cream over the dark and milk mixture. Leave the bowls for 1-2 minutes, then stir until smooth and glossy. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes.
•
Put the cream cheese in a bowl and whisk lightly to loosen. Add the icing sugar and the cooled white chocolate and cream mixture, then blend until smooth. Stir through the cranberries, then chill.
•
When the cakes are cold, start assembling. With the cakes flat-side up, use a 7cm biscuit cutter to mark a circle in the centre of each. Use a spoon to gently scoop a dip in each cake, about 4cm deep.
200g plain flour 200g golden caster sugar 4 large eggs 2 tbsp cocoa 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1½ tsp baking powder 75g buttermilk 2 tsp vanilla extract 2 x 10g tubes Dr. Oetker red food colouring 2 tbsp white wine vinegar For the Ganache and Filling 450ml double cream zest 2 oranges 100g white chocolate, grated 100g dark chocolate, grated 200g milk chocolate, grated 180g tub cream cheese 3 tbsp icing sugar 50g dried cranberries, plus extra to serve

•
Remove the cream cheese mixture from the fridge and use to fill the cavities in the cakes, spreading a little onto the flat surfaces too, to help them stick together. Invert 1 cake onto the other to create a sphere, and place on a wire rack set over a baking tray (this will catch any chocolate drips).
•
To ice the cake, the chocolate ganache needs to be the right consistency – pourable but not too runny. If it has set a little too much, place in the microwave for 10-20 seconds, then mix until smooth; if it is too runny, chill until it has firmed up a little.
•
Pour half the ganache over the cake, letting it cover the sides and run into the tray below. Cover the whole surface using a palette knife. This is just the first coating, so won’t fill the gap between the sponges.
Ledbury Focus
• Chill the cake for 20 minutes or until the ganache has firmed up a little. • Remove the cake from the fridge. Cover the gap around the middle with the remaining ganache, smoothing it all over with a palette knife. Return to the fridge for another 20 minutes until firm, then transfer to a serving plate. • Melt the remaining white chocolate in the microwave in short 10-second bursts. Drizzle over the top of the cake, then scatter with dried cranberries, sprinkles and edible glitter, if you like. • Chill if not serving straight away – it will keep in the fridge for up to 2 days. Remove from the fridge 30 mins before serving. Recipe from Good Food magazine, November 2014

T
ucked away in the grounds of Eastnor Castle estate, is the little-known Vincent Wildlife Trust. The trust was founded in 1975 by the late Hon Vincent Weir, who was a keen conservationist, determined to contribute to the protection of endangered wildlife in Britain and Ireland. The Vincent Wildlife Trust initially focused its resources on researching the decline of the otter, and in 1977 set up the Otter Haven Project to help protect river habitats essential to the survival of fragile otter populations. Following on from this, the VWT turned its attention to other lesser known species, such as horse-shoe and other rare species of bats, pine martens, polecats and other mustelids. One of the projects the VWT is currently working on is the reintroduction of pine martens into Wales from Scotland. The pine martens are caught in the wild in Scotland, transported in specially designed vehicles to Wales. There they are kept in captivity for a few days to recuperate from the journey, and then released into the wild. So far this year 20
pine martens have been relocated, with a further 20 planned for next year. These 40 pine martens are believed to be sufficient to start a natural breeding colony. Recent research in Ireland has shown that where pine marten populations recover to healthy numbers, grey squirrels populations decline, allowing red squirrels to recover. As part of the pine marten translocation to Wales, the VWT are monitoring the effect that the pine martens have on grey squirrels in the release area, in order to get a better understanding of the relationship between the two species. Polecats and pine martens are rarely seen in the wild, so if you have seen one in your area, please get in touch with the VWT to let them know. This type of information is vital to their research. Equally vital to any organisation like the VWT, is fund raising. If you would like to know more about the Vincent Wildlife Trust and the many ways in which you can help the work they do please have a look at their website www.vwt.org.uk.

Court victory over former husbands set to start legal stampede say experts
T
wo women who won their Supreme Court cases after claiming they were tricked by ex-husbands into accepting unfair divorce settlements will pave the way for a stampede in the courts, claims Ledbury law experts, DF Legal. Wayne Phillips, Family Law Specialist at DF Legal said many divorces would be open to scrutiny after Alison Sharland and Varsha Gohil created a media storm with their recent court victories. The women had said the true extent of the wealth of former spouses was concealed when the deals were made, and now both claims will return to the High Court.
Ms Sharland, from Cheshire, accepted £10m in her divorce from her wealthy entrepreneur husband, believing this represented half of his wealth when it later transpired his company's value was estimated by the financial press to be worth approximately £600m. Ms Gohil, from north London, accepted £270,000 and a car as a settlement when she divorced her husband in 2002. However in 2010, Mr Gohil was jailed for money laundering and at the criminal trial evidence revealed he had not disclosed his real wealth during divorce proceedings. “We could see the floodgates open to thousands of people throughout the land creating a stampede for justice,” he added.
“The fact is we now have a new precedent about how the courts should act where dishonest information is used in agreeing a divorce settlement,” he said. “It has created a stir and family law departments will certainly be watching with interest,” he added. Anyone wishing to know more about the facts surrounding this case or any other legal matters can call DF Legal on 01531 633222.

African Art Competition
I
n the Summer Term all Primary Schools in Herefordshire and Worcestershire were invited to enter an Art Competition with an African theme. This was sponsored by Beacons, the Development Education Centre for the two counties. The prizes were to be Music Workshops based on the travels of David Fanshawe, the renowned composer and photographer. His widow Jane lives in Colwall and uses his recordings in exciting workshops with a global theme. The children participate with ethnic percussion instruments which they keep as part of their prize.
Beacons were thrilled with the spectacular entries that started arriving, but especially exciting to me in Ledbury was that many of the main prize winners were local schools! Focus Ledbury
Tiny Pendock School won 1st Prize, worth ÂŁ500 pounds, with six vibrant collages using wonderful colours and textures. Hanley Swan gained second place with exquisite cut outs of African animals and most original printed borders. Bosbury School won 3rd Prize with a splendid project which involved every class producing collages using cut out animals and intricate tile patterns. Colwall too were Highly Commended for a whole school project where scary spiders and hot sunsets made their hall zing with the flavour of Africa. Further afield, Stretton Sugwas and St Matthias Primary printed patterns truly beautifully onto cloth and then sewed together their individual designs. Kempsey School made individual and imaginative masks on a cleverly made Tanzanian background. There are so many talented children, and of course teachers, in our area!
Beacons, one of whose activities is loaning out artefacts and clothing from Africa, Asia and South America for global Projects in Schools, was started by Isla Williams who lived in Colwall. Her aim was to promote good news from the developing world and that cooperation is beneficial to all, whether in an art project or a global problem. At present the collages are on display at Worcester University, where lecturers in the Education Department judged the Competition.

New Opportunity for Time Out for Ledbury Carers
C
rossroads Care is a local carers charity who provide practical help and support to unpaid / family carers and those who they care for. A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support: 1) with one in five people becoming unpaid carers at some point in their lives 2) with 75% of carers saying they find it hard to maintain friendships and social networks 3) Crossroads are delighted to be able to support Ledbury carers with a newly formed carers social group. The social group is designed to enable carers to take time out of the routine of caring and enables them to socialise with other experiencing similar challenges to themselves. Carers are invited to come along to the social group on their own or with the people that they support. Fully qualified support staff from the Crossroads Care not-for-profit care agency will be on hand to offer assistance with any aspect of mobility or personal care to help the afternoon to be a stress free as possible. There is no cost for the carer. Ledbury Focus
The group will be meeting during the 3rd week of each month. Dates for 2015 are: Wednesday 18th November and Thursday 16th December from 2pm to 4 pm at Holy Trinity Parish Hall, New Street, Ledbury. Assistance can be provided with transport The Crossroads Care schemes began in 1975 as a direct result of the television soap of the same name. There was a character in the television programme called Sandy. He was a wheelchair user and was cared for by Megan. ITV received many letters from carers saying that the portrayal of the character and the role of his carer were not always accurate, although they were pleased that a disabled person was being featured on the programme. To their credit, the television production team donated ÂŁ10,000 to do research into how many carers there were, and what they needed to help their situation. It took only a few weeks for the research project to realise that amongst the support carers needed was respite care in their homes. At that time, the only respite carers could get was if their loved ones went to hospital. The research project was scrapped and the first Crossroads scheme began.
Crossroads Care Forest of Dean & Herefordshire scheme was formed in 1996. As a registered charity and not-for-profit care agency regulated by the Care Quality Commission they continue to offer 1:1 support and respite in the home. Crossroads Care Herefordshire are able to launch their wellbeing service with the support of Hereford Council. Crossroads Care is working in partnership with other charities and organisations that also provide support services to carers across the county. A quarterly newsletter of all activities and support available to carers is available. Being a new and developing service Crossroads are keen to hear from Ledbury and district carers on what they feel would be useful so that ideas can be explored and new services it can be arranged in the new year. Crossroads are available to support any other groups and organisations in Ledbury and would be happy to provide one hour dementia awareness presentations for any group or society. If you would like any further information from Crossroads Care they can be contacted on 01432 355373 or email at info@ crossroadshereford.org.uk.

About Your Safer Neighbourhood Teams
S
afer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT) work with local people and partners to identify, tackle and solve issues that matter to the community where you live. Working from Ledbury police station on Worcester Road we are privileged to police an area of outstanding natural beauty within Herefordshire, and cover the town and many surrounding villages such as Colwall, Cradley, Bosbury and Eastnor. Our day to day work focuses on managing the risk of harm to local residents and identifying those individuals causing that harm. We aim to make the Ledbury area a safer place to live and work and you will see us out and about in the community. We are supported by Local Patrol Officers who have good local knowledge, many of whom have worked in the area for some time. We hope that you find our articles useful and please contact us should you have any questions or concerns. Get in touch: By phone: 101 to talk to your local SNT or report a crime. Christmas crime prevention advice: 1. Try and place your Christmas tree out of sight of street fronted windows 2. Don't display gifts under the Christmas tree until the last possible moment. 3. Where possible, leave the buying of expensive gifts e.g. TV's, Computers, IPODs, to the last moment. 4. When out celebrating the festive season, use timer switches for lights and radios to give the impression someone is still at home, and remember to close your curtains. 5. Property mark all your new electrical and valuable gifts. 6. When Christmas is all over don't leave the boxes to your valuable gifts out by the rubbish bin, take them directly to your local household recycling centre - you don't want everyone to know what you have had. 7. Do not store Christmas presents in outdoor wooden sheds. Special Constable Recruitment West Mercia Police’s Special Constable recruitment process enables the force to recruit more volunteers from all walks of life, who are committed to making a difference in not only their local community, and across a broader range of functions as the policing landscape changes and evolves.

The Special Constabulary provides a crucial and extremely rewarding role, supporting their regular police officer colleagues. They have the same policing powers and will assist in dealing with the issues and concerns that affect people across the West Mercia policing area. To apply to become a Special Constable, and to learn more about the role, please visit www. westmercia.police.uk/specialconstables Driver Training - a message from Herefordshire Council Refresher training for older drivers For many older people in Herefordshire, a driving licence provides independence, the ability to keep in touch with friends and attend social events. We are committed to helping people to retain their independent mobility while remaining safe on the road. However, with increasing age many people start to lose confidence in their driving abilities. They may find that their eyesight, hearing and judgement are not as sharp as they used to be. Also, our roads are constantly changing - they are becoming busier with larger and faster vehicles. Some practical driver training can help to increase confidence, improve driving skills and reduce the risk of being involved in a collision. We offer drivers who live in Herefordshire and are aged 70 or over a two hour practical driving session with an approved driving instructor, in their own vehicle. It will only cost you £10 - Herefordshire Council will pay the remainder of the fee. To apply for the training please: • Telephone: 01432 260946 • Email: roadsafety@herefordshire.gov.uk The next Ledbury PACT meeting is on Monday 18th January at 7pm in the Council offices.
Merry Christmas from your Ledbury Safer Neighbourhood Team Ledbury Focus

The Bowen Technique for Structural Problems by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DipM
In this article, I will share with you some information concerning how I use the Bowen Technique to help with structural problems and the symptoms caused by structural imbalance. I also offer some recommendations for exercise and lifestyle changes that may help. Structural Problems Structural problems in the human body can occur in a myriad of places, for a multitude of reasons and often cause unpleasant symptoms. What I am referring to when I talk about structure is our skeleton and the supporting structures and systems of the body including; muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and fascia. Some of the more common structural issues I work with include; • General back pain – can occur for many different reasons which aren’t always immediately obvious. I will typically work to rebalance the body on a first session and then reassess what the body is presenting on the second session. Often the body will compensate for 84
imbalance by adopting different patterns of behaviour and this can often lead us to misinterpret what is going on. By balancing the body as a whole and giving it time (typically a week) to integrate the new balance we can correctly assess what is going on, where the imbalance is originating, and plan an appropriate course of treatment. • Slipped disk herniation – occurs when one of the disks that sit between the vertebrae are damaged and press against a nerve. The condition can occur anywhere along the vertebral column and is generally very painful, often with tingling and numbness and weakness. When I am treating this condition, considering the body/
structure as a whole is paramount. It might be for example that the structures surrounding the affected area are not doing their job correctly and this has led to the degeneration. Or it might be that the surrounding structures are working hard to support the affected area and need some additional support themselves. • Sciatica – occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated in some way. Sciatica is generally incredibly painful and will often travel down one of the legs. Numbness and tingling often occur also. In practice, I would typically use the pelvic procedure to address sciatic pain and as long as there were no other complications this procedure can significantly help this condition.
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: betty@grapevinepublications.co.uk
• Neck problems – could be caused by all sorts of different issues such as trauma i.e. whiplash injuries, disk problems, and degenerative conditions to name a few. In Bowen, we have many procedures available to use that may help with neck problems. • Knee problems - often in practice what I find is that problems manifesting in the knee are actually occurring in the pelvis and referring down. Some of the other causes of knee pain could include; bursitis, tendonitis, cartilage damage, sprains and strains. In Bowen, we have a specific procedure that can treat the knee and its surrounding structures. Holistic Treatment The body systems and parts that make up the whole work synergistically, each one is responsible for its own function but has to cooperate with the whole unit in order for the body to function at its optimum. If one of the systems is out of balance it will impact the other systems. The body always does its best however and works hard to maintain its homeostasis or balance. The way in which Bowen works is truly holistic it always looks to achieve the best balance for the body as a whole and in the most efficient way possible. In practice, I find it common for clients to Ledbury Focus
experience improvement in other areas of health even when a session focused on treating a specific structural problem. When we consider the fact that Bowen works directly with the nervous system specifically affecting the nerves along the vertebral column we can see how a multifaceted response is often experienced. A lot of the Bowen work is also carried out over specific energy systems such as the meridians and chakra systems adding yet another dimension to treatment. Lifestyle factors to help with structural problems • Hydration is vital to the balance of the body. I have known clients begin taking more water and the painful muscles that have plagued them for years have got better virtually overnight! • Posture is very important the body needs plenty of variation, so if you work in a seated position have plenty of breaks and get up stretch or even have a short walk. Make sure your desk is set up properly for you including desk and chair height and position. A good tip to remember when you are sitting is that your knees should be lower than your hips. • Exercise is important in supporting structural health
and getting enough appropriate exercise for your specific body type and health requirements are essential. Some of my favourite exercises include; walking, swimming, yoga or gentle stretching, pilates and rebounding on a mini trampoline (my personal favourite!) And finally, I would like to wish you all a happy, healthy and joyful Christmas and New Year.
