I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and wish you all the very best for the year to come. For my part, I'm extremely disappointed that we again didn't have a white Christmas - that's the main reason I came to live in England! In fact, apart from a couple of slightly colder days, the weather has been very mild this winter. Let's hope I'm not tempting providence, and it stays that way. On to this month's magazine. As always we have plenty of good reading for you, as well as all our regular advertisers, and one or two new ones. One of this month's articles is from the West Mercia Police, on ways to protect yourself from cyber crime - it's worth reading, even if you are an experienced 'surfer'.
Front Cover Photo
The Ledbury Focus is expanding, so as you browse through this month's issue, you might notice an advert for a sales person. Ideally, the job would suit someone who wants to work part-time from home, so if that's you then give me a call and let's talk.
Printers
And that's all for this month, so until next time, keep happy and healthy.

Happy Feet! W
e only get one pair of feet so it’s important to take good care of them. But many of us will develop some foot problems as we age, simply as a result of daily wear and tear. Anyone who has experienced foot pain knows only too well how debilitating it can be. Over time it can become a significant health issue because if we can’t walk comfortably, we’re less likely to get out and about and take part in the social activities or daily exercise that is vital for our health and wellbeing. Poor foot care can lead to mobility difficulties, poor balance resulting in falls, a loss of confidence and longer term health conditions. Something as simple as cutting our own toenails and looking after our feet can become much harder or sometimes impossible as we get older, due to sight impairment, arthritis or because we simply cannot reach our feet. Our nails also become tougher with age. Nails that become too long can press against the end of the shoe and the constant pressure can cause soreness, infection or ulceration. Toenails that have been poorly cut can also become ingrown. Hacking at our toenails can do more harm than good!
Ledbury Focus
Age UK Hereford & Localities provides a Footcare Service at various locations across Herefordshire (including Ledbury). The service enables older people to keep active and mobile, engaged within their communities, avoiding being housebound and isolated and relieve the distress and discomfort which accompanies long toenails and hard skin on your feet. To find out more about our Footcare Service and the other services and support we provide in Ledbury please call into our office in the Master’s House, Bye Street, or contact us:

LEDBURY:
A Novel Experience
by Jan Harvey, author of The Seven Letters
I
visit Ledbury three or four times a year, with my friends, (all the way from Burford, Oxfordshire) to shop and have lunch. When it comes to a warm welcome and a lively town centre there really is nowhere quite like it. We have a well-worn ‘retail trail’ which we have adopted over the years. We walk up one side of the High Street starting at Raft and ending at Butler&Sweatmen. Then it’s back down the other side visiting the independent traders who make the town so special. We have lunch at Chez Pascal - a little trip to France every time - and then dive into the ‘Top End’ where we visit the gorgeous Tinsmiths, the bookshops, delis, kitchen shop, Hus and Hem and Ethos. These shops are especially wonderful for Christmas shopping when the lights make the market square look so pretty. Our final stop off is The Velvet Bean, which sells the best chocolate in the world, bar none. Ledbury is pure joy for me and so it was almost inevitable that I used the town and its environs as a backdrop for my debut novel, The Seven Letters. I wanted a contrast for the warm honey-stoned cottages nestling amongst rolling hills that is the Cotswolds, and for me the terracotta soil, broad fields dotted with cattle and the black and white timbered houses of Herefordshire, in the shadow of the mighty Malverns, was perfect. The Seven Letters is set in England in the current day and Paris during World War Two. It is a mystery that takes the protagonists on a journey that will end in a heartbreaking discovery. Please don’t make the mistake of thinking that my novel is a romance because at its heart it is a tough subject and it uncovers a part of the history of Paris that the city has tried to erase. It also asks tough questions and leaves you thinking long after you’ve read it. The comments that readers have made have been quite simply amazing, with people describing The Seven Letters as ‘a wonderful book,’ ‘fast-paced’, ‘heartbreaking’, 16
‘delicious’ and best of all ‘an incredible story.’ As a writer you just want to hear people say they loved the story you have written and the positive feedback has made four years of hard work very worthwhile! If you would like to buy The Seven Letters you can order through bookshops, online, on kindle, Kobo and ibooks or buy directly from me and I will sign a copy for you. If your Bookclub would like me to attend I’m more than happy to take part and give you some insights on the novel in person, plus it’s a chance for me to visit Ledbury again. I hope you enjoy the book and find all the relevant Ledbury references and work out where they are. It will take a bit of detective work, and a bit of imagination too. Jan Harvey can be contacted through her website: www. janharveyauthor.com or you could give her facebook page a like www.facebook/janharveyauthor, for competitons, reviews and up to the minute news. Casanova G
iacomo Girolamo Casanova was an 18th century adventurer and writer. Born 2nd April 1725, in Venice, Italy, he lived for 73 years. Casanova entered the university of Padua at just twelve years old, graduating at seventeen, with a degree in law. Casanova had numerous encounters with females during his life. He also reportedly became a spy. Casanova searched for fortune constantly, along with his insatiable desire for love and lust. Casanova Prosecco is passionate in its desire to continue and extend the personality and charm of the legendary Casanova, with each bottle being an ultimate perfection of quality and art. The winery was founded during the middle of the 20th century and is one of the largest in Valdobbiadene. Casanova Prosecco is produced by traditional Italian methods, using Glera grapes. Their resulting sparkling wines are award-winning, of premium quality, with exceptional style and presentation. Casanova Prosecco Brut (DOC) and Casanova Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Extra Dry (DOCG) have splendid fruit bouquets. The superb, fresh mouthfeel and palates follow, continuing through to smooth finishes. These extremely popular productions grace many dining occasions, regularly. The Henriette Cuvée, by Casanova, has a following of devotees. A fruity nose, plus an elegantly-dry mouthfeel and palate sensation, ensure the popularity of this production. Casanova Rosé Cuvée Prestige Extra Dry appeals, with its pale rose colour and
22
very pleasant bouquet of delicate fruits. The flavours and elegance make it a regular selection for events. Casanova Rosé Cuvée Prestige Limited Edition also has a bouquet of delicate fruits. Another elegant production. Widely appreciated and often chosen for weddings and functions, this grandly-presented premium wine, in a white-coloured bottle, surpasses all expectations. Presentations can include Swarovski crystals for newly-weds. These productions pair extremely well with fish, seafoods and white meats, etc. They are also wonderful for apéritifs, as well as making for some magnificent cocktails, too. Each has a fine, persistent perlage and characteristic aroma. Complementing accessories – eg. Matching bottle stopper, cooler, ice bucket and elegant flutes, with logo, etc. - are all available, also. A company dedicated and committed to producing and presenting high-quality, exceptional wines and products. Carat Lux Ltd Tel: 0203 770 3507 info@proseccocasanova.com www.proseccocasanova.com

Natural approaches to treating depression
M
any of us feel the winter blues, especially after the joys of the festive season. A psychology professor at Cardiff University even suggested that the third Monday of January is the most depressing day of the year, using a formula that he had developed based on six factors. However, even the creator admits that it should be taken with a pinch of salt: it was developed for an advertising campaign after all! GPs use signs and symptoms as well as questionnaires to identify and monitor the severity of depression. One thing we can be sure of is that happiness and
depression are complex feelings and can be caused by a large variety of components. The prevalence of depression is increasing rapidly; based on current rates, it could be the second most disabling condition in the world by 2020.
Symptoms of depression The common understanding that depression is a feeling of long-term sadness, doesn’t provide the full picture by any manner of means. Major depressive disorder is a debilitating illness that can cause: • Impaired motor skills • Problems with memory and attention • Neurotoxicity
• Impaired ability to work, love, play • Emotional and physical pain • Suicidal thoughts and actions Depression can easily go undiagnosed for extended periods of time, meaning that a huge number of people may be suffering, without help or support, at any point in time.
Treatment research The University of Kansas is working on some research that suggests that a lot of depression might be caused by a “runaway stress response”. Watch depression researcher Stephen Ilardi’s, TEDx talk on this topic for more details. This suggestion mirrors much of our experience at the Wellhaven Clinic and thus reducing stress and helping the body to heal from the damage caused may well be a viable treatment approach. This research has shown promising results using six factors for combating depression: • Exercise • Omega-3 fatty acids • Sunlight • Healthy sleep • Anti-ruminative activity • Social connection The team have created a website which contains further details on all of these points: http://tlc.ku.edu. Acupuncture and depression A significant number of studies have found that acupuncture is at least as helpful as drugs in the treatment of depression and the lack of side
effects make it an appealing option. It is believed that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system and causes the release of neurochemical messenger molecules which cause a change in the way the body maintains health. Acupuncture has been shown to change the ‘default mode network’ in the brain, which is the way that parts of the resting brain interact with each other and has been shown to help with depression. Visit our website and read our blog for more information on the research. Why not give acupuncture a try and see if it can help you?
What’s the point? This point is used for depression, especially when caused by grief or a sense of deprivation. Use acupressure on this point to give yourself a home treatment! Read the blog on our website for more instructions. Lung 9 Very Great Abyss

A
busy and successful autumn! In October, with the Joint Action for Herefordshire Libraries, we had huge support for our demonstration outside Shire Hall. Several councillors came out to talk to us before joining the debate on next year’s libraries’ budget. For the moment we are not expecting more cuts although this will change again at the end of the next financial year. Our two events in November made just over £600 each time. The book sale was another success. Our thanks go to everyone who donated books, bought books and in particular to the volunteers who helped organise everything.

Our annual quiz was held in the Royal Hall, the Southend another hugely enjoyable evening run by Sara-Jane Arbury. Our thanks go to the Heaney family for donating both the venue and the food and to the following local businesses for donating raffle prizes: Cutting Club, Elegance, Ethos, Gaynan Jewlers, John Goodwin, Gurneys, Handly Organics, Hay Wines, Juice Jewelry, The Kitchen Cupboard, Ledbury Hardware, Market House Café, Muse Café, John Nash, Nice Things, The Retreat, Sitara, Sweet Memories, Tesco, Tinsmiths, and Westons Cider.
All aspects of Building & Carpentry undertaken with FREE QUOTATION
For this coming financial year we are looking at supporting schools events being held in the Library. We are also considering a project to demonstrate that our Library should be open for the same number of hours as Leominster and Ross. We estimate the ‘Hours Project’ will cost about £5000 – more news on this as we assess feasibility. For more information please contact ledburylibraryfriends@g.mail.com

#Be Cyber Smart W
arwickshire Police and West Mercia Police have launched the #Be Cyber Smart campaign to raise awareness of internet-related crime and to give people the know-ledge they need to stay safe online. 'The Virtual World Has Real Life Consequences', #Be Cyber Smart encourages people to think about how they behave on the internet and raises awareness of what they can do to protect themselves against online crime. Internet Dating? #Be Cyber Smart Don't let your heart rule your head. Stop and think before you fall head over heels. How well do you really know the person you are forming a relationship with? Are they who they say they are? Are they really looking for love or do they have pound signs in their eyes? Are the pictures they send you believable? Are they asking you lots of questions but keeping tight-lipped about themselves? Have they quickly started using pet names or endearing terms? Do they want to swiftly move their communication with you away from the website or chat room and instead to instant messaging and text messages? Are they asking for money? Don't fall for 'hard luck' stories. 34
3) Use a Credit Card Still talking about payments, remember that you have more chance of getting your money back in the event of problems if you pay by credit card rather than debit card. Some sellers may charge a premium, but it could well be worth the extra for your peace of mind.
4) Use Auction Sites Safely Always use trusted and well-known payment methods instead of paying What are your instincts telling you? Does sellers directly. Read the site and seller's conditions. Never give money, credit card or online account details to anyone you do not know or trust. Think about your safety if you meet in person. Stay in a public place, don't get a lift with them, tell someone where you are going, keep your phone with you, don't leave your possessions or drink unattended and do not drink too much.
5) Check Out Bargains With Care If you find or are emailed about an item that seems just too much of a bargain, it could be a scam, fake goods or it doesn't match the description. Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
6) Use Social Networks Safely Social networks are a popular medium for scams, and are becoming increasingly so. Sometimes, just closing the window doesn't mean you've logged out, and someone else could gain access to your account and personal details. Don't forget to check and save purchase confirmation emails. 10) Make Sure Wi-fi Is Secure At home or other premises you know, make sure the Wi-Fi is secured before doing anything confidential online. When you're out and about - in the café, the pub or a hotel for example - you can't guarantee it's secured even if you have to enter a code. When you're shopping, banking or making other online payments, it's better to connect with 3G or 4G, even if it's slower. 11) Beware of Scam Phone Calls If someone posing as a retailer calls you to confirm an online purchase, it could well be a scam. The idea is that you won't remember the purchase, and call your bank. However, the fraudster stays on the line, and tricks you into revealing your financial details. If this happens, hang up, don't call back, but report it to Action Fraud. 12) Check Bank Statements Check your bank and credit card accounts regularly for irregular or unauthorised transactions. If you spot any entries you don't recognise, contact your bank without delay. Make sure your bank has your up-to-date contact details so they can alert you if they spot anything unusual. If you think you have been a victim of fraud: Report it to Action Fraud, the UK's national fraud reporting centre by calling 0300 123 20 40.

... and a Buzzard in a Pear Tree N
ew year, a new feeder and new arrangements in the garden, but the feeder has a design fault: its open to squirrels. And as the whippets are currently finding the wood burner more satisfying than chasing rodents, an unguarded feeder is a disaster. Before Christmas I bought two squirrel baffles - essentially upside down plastic bowls that attach to the feeder poles. The bowls can also be hung with a feeder underneath it. I’ve been wanting to hang feeders from trees in the garden for a while and the orchard seemed a perfect place to start. The trees provide cover and, I hoped, would attract shyer birds. I set to work. Filled the feeder, and marched off to the orchard to find a suitable branch, but finding the right one was easier said than done, especially when you are only 5ft 1in
38
tall, and possibly rather too old to be teetering on ladders. I needed another method. A rope, flung over a thick branch far enough away from the trunk to prevent the squirrels jumping on to it. It works a treat. The feeder and squirrel baffle hang from the rope which allows me to pull it up and down for re-filling. Within moments the feeder was covered in four species of tit, a robin and a woodpecker. And with squirrels defeated, (so far) I call that a success.
afternoon on Christmas Eve, I was wrapping presents upstairs. Glancing out of the window, there it was, the buzzard sitting in the pear tree watching. What? I tiptoed to the window to see. Was it waiting to make an unsuspecting pheasant its lunch? There were none to be seen. All at once the buzzard dropped to the ground by the feeder and began picking something from the grass. Suet pellets dropped by the smaller birds maybe?
My pear tree, the one that seems to have no purpose other than to feed the muntjac on windfalls, entertain the lurcher and provide blossom for the bees - actually that all seems pretty useful doesn’t it? - has now got another use: it’s become a favourite perch for a buzzard. Amazing when you realise how close to the house it is. Late
For several days the buzzard returned, behaving in exactly the same way, and I was none the wiser. Then, looking at the photographs I’d taken I’m fairly sure I’d found the answer. Was that the remains of an earthworm protruding from the side of its beak? Photos and article by Geraldine Holbourn

A POSY OF POPPIES Calling all Artists & Crafts People
2
018 is the centenary anniversary of the end of World War 1. A group of us are developing ideas to bring together all the art and craft activities in Ledbury to celebrate for the week of Armistice. This started with the idea of a spot of ‘guerrilla knitting’. What if we covered the railings outside the Almshouses with knitted or crochet poppies? From there our thoughts went to arranging exhibitions of art and craft work on the theme of poppies or WWI. We thought of poetry, calligraphy, embroidery, quilting, painting, pottery, metal work, stained glass, wood work, book art, photography, baking, floral art - the list goes on! We would divide any money raised between The British Legion and Help for Heroes. We’ve started making some contacts and the response is positive.

s we welcome in the New Year after the festive period we begin to make plans for the year ahead. Many of our pets will have joined in the Christmas activities and may well have put on a kilogram or two after a few extra Christmas treats! Now is a good time to think about our pet’s weight with regards to their health, and to get an accurate weight for them, so that if we need to consider changing our routine with regards to exercise, feeding and treats, then we can discuss together the best way forward to help make our pets as healthy and happy as possible. At the surgery we have accurate weighing scales for dogs, cats and small pets of all shapes and sizes, including scales which are set out on the table and walk on scales for our larger canine friends. Why not bring your pet into the surgery to see one of our helpful nurses or vets for a weight check?

January is now with us, the winter has set in and it’s a good time to prune your roses. The aim is to remove damage and reduce height. Roses do not have a great root stock and the winter weather can cause damage with wind rocking the roots.
Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
FEBRUARY
Rose Pruning
T
hank you to everyone who emailed and called me over pruning apple trees article featured in November’s issue. I am pleased it has pointed you in the right direction. Don’t forget, you have until February for apple trees to be pruned. This is also the same with roses, so do not worry, you have not missed the boat and, as promised, here is some advice.
44
First of all, you are looking to take out what I was taught are the three D’s. These are: dead, diseased or damaged wood (as cleanly as possible). If you’re unsure if the wood is dead, a simple way is to gently scratch the bark and if it is not green underneath then it is dead. This method can be followed from the top of a suspected stem all the way down to the base. Once the three D’s are cut out, they and all their leaves should be removed and burnt as they could contain disease such as ‘black spot’ or ‘rust’ that you do not want carrying onto next year’s growth. When pruning a stem, cut just above a leaf bud, cutting away from the bud so any rainwater runs away from the new bud. As a rough guide, a rose needs to be cut back to five buds from where this year’s growth started. It can then be reduced again in March back to the strongest looking bud. Following January’s pruning I would recommend a

winter wash spray (a number of products are on the market) to help keep disease down to a minimum. I would not recommend feeding because, if there are a few weeks where the winter weather is good, you don’t want the plant to put on new growth that is then going to be damaged by frosts. However, mulching around the base of the plant with either horse manure or leaf mulch will help to protect the roots. When to spray or not to spray . . . that is the question Spraying roses is always best done to prevent diseases. If you have spent all this effort keeping them free of ‘black spot’ etc. then it would be a real shame to lose out through not catching diseases early. I spray my roses with a rose spray (many on the market) as soon as the buds start to burst, not only the rose but anything within a few feet of the plant as some spores i.e. ‘black spot’ are spread by
rain droplets splashing spores from leaf to leaf or plant to plant. This way the rose can build up its immune system, so spray every 14 days if you can. Next time, to cheer us all up from the cold dark winter months, I will look at adding colour into your garden to add interest as well as making your garden seem larger than it really is.
If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Brownies undeterred by the chill!
I
n spite of a chilly evening, 18 people including the 1st Tarrington Brownies along with Brown Owl Annette Embrey (and Harrison the Polio Eradication Bear) arrived at Tarrington’s Lady Emily Hall, to plant crocus bulbs into the shape of the Rotary Roundel emblem which had been marked out on the grassed area. Rotarian John Tallis chatted with all those who had helped, giving them information about the End Polio now campaign. Brown Owl remarked that this activity was in keeping with the Brownies “world Challenge projects” and they were delighted to be involved. Everyone received gifts of a purple crocus lapel flower, a knitted pinkie (made by Doreen Baker) and a square of delicious cake. It was a joyful event for all and we are grateful for the huge efforts made by all. Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease

that Rotary has been working hard to eradicate globally since 1985. Rotary has helped immunise 2.5 billion children around the world and we are closer than we have ever been to eradicating polio. Although many countries are no longer polio-endemic, they are still at risk of the disease returning, making continued immunisation programmes vitally important. Amongst our many partners are Bill and Melinda Gates whose Foundation have matched monies raised to beat Polio. The Purple4Polio campaign by Rotary International, in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society, aims to plant 5 million purple crocuses across Great Britain and Ireland - to raise awareness of Rotary’s fund-raising activities for this important cause, to help to cross the winning line and create history article by Jan Long photographs, by Jan Long and Richard Hammond

Exploring Herefordshire’s landscapes with Herefordshire Wildlife Trust . . .
The Hedgerow 19th centuries while a species-rich hedgerow is one in which five or more native woody species can be found in a 30-metre length.
H
edgerows are an important feature of our landscape for many reasons. They provide shelter and protection in otherwise open areas for many small mammals, they provide nesting sites for birds, and the berries and nuts they produce in autumn are important food for all sorts of creatures as winter closes in.
Hedgerows also act as wildlife corridors for many species. This means that they are used by animals to travel between habitats to find food, shelter, a territory or a mate. For example, a woodland species such as the dormouse, who does not venture out into open spaces, may travel from one pocket of woodland to another along a hedge.
Wildlife to spot Too many to mention! Hedgerows are a vital habitat for many species especially butterflies and moths, farmland birds, bats and dormice. Over 600 plant species, 1,500 insects, 65 birds and 20 mammals have been recorded in hedgerows in the UK!
Where to find them Despite many miles of hedgerow being lost across the UK since the middle of the last century, Herefordshire still has many miles criss-crossing the countryside. m o r f s d r a c t s Po Hi, I’m Sandie
I
live in Ledbury and would like to introduce you to a series of sixpostcard sized stories that I’ve written. They are all inspired by places, or events that happened in or around our beautiful town. The first five stories move through history, recording a moment in time from an ancient pre-historic past to the nineteenth century. The last postcard is different. It’s not set in the past. It simply asks a question of us all about the sort of future that we will create. I don’t really know what started me thinking about writing the ‘postcards,’ except that we are fortunate, I think, to live in Ledbury. From our town, in every direction that we travel, we are surrounded by beautiful countryside and a rich history.
64
the Past Postcard from the past circa 1330 - Mappa Mundi - extract from the writings of a small boy
Hereford Cathedral’s Mappa Mundi is stunningly beautiful. It is the only complete wall map of the Earth to have survived the Middle Ages. It tells of cities, towns, biblical events, plants, animals, birds, strange creatures and images of the peoples of the world. Looking at it, I wondered how a young child might feel about seeing it for the first time.
