I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, and made lots of New Year resolutions ... which of course you mean to keep! If Christmas in your house is anything like it is in mine, someone has at some point spilled something on the carpet - but don't despair, have a look at the cleaning tips from Mavis Russell on page 12. This month sees the annual Ledbury Big Breakfast, so turn to page 20 for more details. January is also pantomime month at The Market Theatre - have a look at page 31 for booking details. If you like knitting, then why not dig out your knitting needles, collect up all those scraps of wool you've got tucked away in the cupboard and start knitting blanket squares - page 28 will tell you more! And as always, we have our usual range of articles on a variety of subjects ... hopefully something for everyone. February is Valentine's month, so if you have an event planned or specials on offer, let me know so we can get the details in the next edition of the magazine. Until then, keep well and happy reading.
Betty

A New Year of Hope
B
y the time you read this I expect Christmas Day will be a distant memory and New Year resolutions will either have been abandoned or starting to have real meaning! I have always found the New Year brings a sense of optimism and hope, but I know that is not the same for everyone. We deal with about 25,000 information and advice requests annually about older people issues here at Age UK Herefordshire & Worcestershire and there are others across the voluntary sector doing likewise. I like to think we give people hope as a result of supporting them; a feeling they are not alone; a belief that their problem does have a resolution. Our staff and volunteers
are well trained and dedicated to what they do. I hope that they are as successful in 2016 as they undoubtedly were in 2015. I think we sometimes forget it is a new world out there for older people. Many of them contributed to shaping that world and yet they have seen it develop beyond our wildest dreams. Whilst many people use the internet for numerous everyday things, it still lacks the credibility of a face-toface conversation when we need to resolve a problem. We hope that in 2016 we recognise the diversity within our communities in a new way. Living with the internet is a reality for many under 65. For about 35% of the

population it is in danger of isolating them because it is unavailable or simply costs too much. These are many reasons why people contact us, sometimes it is simply an excuse to have a chat. I hope we will always be there for them. I also hope that you will consider the “art of the possible” and what you can do for someone in need. A revolution can start at any time. Why not volunteer and bring hope to someone else? Our Information & Advice service is available on 0800 008 6077 or 01905 740950.

his time of the year is one of our busiest with regards to emergency stain removal, but very often, by the time we get there, all sorts of off the shelf products have been used. In a lot of instances these can cause more damage than good, and also limit a professional cleaner’s chance of removing the stain.
for washing woollens, to ½ pint (300ml) of warm water. • Detergent Vinegar Solution add one teaspoonful of white (not malt) vinegar to the Detergent Solution. • Ammonia Solution - one teaspoonful of branded household ammonia (available from hardware stores) to one cup of warm water.
We have put a guide together to help you attempt removal of stains safely and effectively with minimal chance of damaging the carpet.
General Tips • Do not over wet into backing materials. • Always test any solution/ detergent on an inconspicuous area of carpet prior to treating a stain. • Use detergents at the recommended dilution ratios. • Scrape up or blot up any excess prior to treatment. • Blot, never rub or scrub. • Do not use inappropriate detergents on carpets or upholstery e.g. washing up liquid, washing powders, household bleach, disinfectants. • Always work from the outside of the stain inward to avoid spreading. • Always apply the cleaning
First and foremost: Don't Panic! If something is spilled on your carpet, prompt action is required to prevent staining, so be prepared. We recommend having the following items and solutions to hand for dealing with spillages as soon as possible: • Clean white absorbent cloth or towel. • Dry Cleaning Solution surgical spirit (usually available from local chemists). • Detergent Solution - one teaspoon of gentle detergent

fluid to the absorbent spotting material, not directly onto the carpet or fabric. • Encourage quick drying carefully use a hairdryer on mild heat to assist. • Deal with stains as quickly as possible for increased chances of success. • Keep the fabric or carpet as dry as possible. First Aid for Your Carpet Coffee Tea Liquid Foods Alcohol Urine • Blot up surplus spillage. • Use Detergent Vinegar Solution, a little at a time. • Work from the outer edge of the stain inwards. • Frequently blot with dry cloths. • See below for final rinse procedure. Chocolate Sweets Glue Egg Blood Ice Cream Milk Soft Drinks Vomit • Scrape up excess with a blunt knife. • Use a Detergent Solution starting at the outer edge • Blot dry. • Follow up with Ammonia Solution.

Solids Fats Shoe Polish Tar Chewing Gum Ointment Oil • Scrape up excess with a blunt knife. • Use a Dry Cleaning Solution followed by Detergent Vinegar Solution. • Blot dry. • See below for final rinse procedure. Unknown Stains • Scrape up or blot surplus spillage. • Use a Dry Cleaning Solution followed by clean luke-warm water. • Blot dry.
• If further treatment is needed, use either Detergent or Detergent Vinegar Solution. • Blot dry • See below for final rinse procedure. Final Rinse Procedure: applicable to all of the above methods of stain removal • Mix one-part white vinegar and four parts water. • Pour mixture into a spray bottle and spray over the stained area. • Blot dampened area (do not rub) to remove excess moisture. • Spread white kitchen towel (stacked 6-8 sheets deep) or absorbent cloth over the affected area and place a
weight, such as a telephone directory, on top. • Leave overnight and repeat if necessary. Whilst the stain removal guide may be basic, it should help prevent some quite common and expensive DIY stain removal damage. Unfortunately, there can never be a guarantee of complete removal of a stain, but the correct routine will give your professional cleaner, when called in, the best possible chance of success. If the stain remains after trying any of the above methods, please don’t hesitate to give us a call on 01531 810013.

With the reduction in government funding for local government, our Library and Customer Services are facing further cuts. The LLDG is working to help protect service in Ledbury. We are now also part of the Joint Action for Herefordshire Libraries group made up of user groups of libraries throughout the county. Our aim is to ensure we keep a thriving and sustainable countywide library network with easy access for all. The LLDG will continue to raise money to buy resources for Ledbury Library. Our next event will be an evening with Quentin Letts on Friday 22nd January, 7 p.m. at the Burgage Hall. Ledbury Books and Maps will be with us with copies of Quentin's latest book - and first novel - The Speaker's Wife. This promises to be a very entertaining evening. Tickets are available from the Library at £8 per person. For more information or to join us, please contact ledburylibraryfriends@gmail.com. Nina Shields Chairman LLDG Ledbury Focus

edbury’s Community Brass Band is pleased to announce the appointment of Colin Herbert as its new Musical Director, taking over the baton from John Frith who is stepping back to concentrate on his composing and vocal music commitments. Colin began playing the cornet at the age of seven tutored by his grandfather, and subsequently joined Sherborne Town Band. He went on to join the Army and studied at the Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall under Professor Peter Wise. Colin was awarded the prestigious Cousins Memorial Parchment for exceptional proficiency on the Euphonium, and also won the title of best cavalry trumpet player on the course.
After 16 years' service Colin left the Army and was soon back in the thick of brass banding, performing as a soloist. He then got involved as Musical Director of youth bands, first at Sherborne, and then at Wilton & District Youth Band. Both these bands enjoyed considerable success under Colin’s leadership. Colin is excited to be joining Ledbury Community Brass Band, and looks forward to working with the band to raise its profile and to increase its appeal to the younger generation. Ledbury Community Brass Band (www.lcbb.org.uk) was founded in 2010 by a group of local parents and musicians including brass teachers Stuart Essenhigh and John Frith. It has grown into a committed group of players from Ledbury and surrounding areas, and
enjoys playing at a variety of events throughout the year. If you would like the band to play at your event, please send an email to events@lcbb.org.uk The band is always looking for new players, either experienced brass musicians or learners of all ages. The band has instruments available for players, and if you or someone in your family would like get involved in the wonderful world of brass, email joining@ lcbb.org.uk for further details.

Happy New Year, Happy New You! by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DipM
Firstly, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Healthy New Year. In this article I share with you some information on minimising stress and some effective tools and techniques to help keep body and mind happy and stress free. I often show my clients these techniques if needed in a therapy session for them to do in between treatments on themselves. I also teach an array of tools and techniques to help with health and well being in my Wellness Workshop. How stress effects the body Stress affects everyone differently, and our coping mechanisms are also very different. As humans, we are designed to cope with a moderate amount of stress. Problems occur however when the stress we are experiencing is continuous and where there is no let up. At a physical level stress can: raise blood pressure, lower immunity, affect our nervous system detrimentally, affect sleep patterns, cause digestive disturbances, affect mood, cause anxiety, and tension can often cause headaches. As you can see minimising stress should be a priority for everyone, as it can have significant benefits to our health and well being. The Bowen Techniques and the nervous system In a Bowen treatment we directly stimulate the nervous system by applying Bowen moves along the vertebral column. Other moves applied on the body will also 26
stimulate a response from the nervous system. We are trying to get the sympathetic nervous system to calm down and the parasympathetic system to fire up more easily which will help us to feel more balanced and less stressed. In Bowen we also affect other structures and systems in the body such as: nerves, tendons, ligaments, muscles and the facia. Many clients report that they feel a deep sense of relaxation during treatment and that this continues for several days after treatment also. Being in a more relaxed space allows the body to function much better, and people feel much better in themselves and able to cope and deal with things much easier. Kinesiology As a Kinesiologist I can quickly assess where stress is impacting upon a persons energy system, and these may well be connected to physical symptoms that are being experienced. Using the Traditional Chinese Medicine
framework of 5 element theory I can quickly and effectively identify imbalance and give indications on how this can be treated for the individual. In Kinesiology I have a varied toolkit that can be used to bring back harmony and balance to body and mind. Flower Essences Flower essences are very effective at helping with emotional problems or blocks at an emotional or psychological level. Rescue Remedy is the well known remedy and is a combination essence from the Bach remedies developed by Harley Street doctor, Doctor Edward Bach, in the 1930s. Essences from the Bach set that I often recommend for clients include: Mimulus helps with any fears, specifically fears of known things. Walnut excellent for use when going through big changes in life. Rock Rose - excellent for intense alarm or horror, this can be used after an accident or with fears and

phobias. Agrimony - after a quarrel or fight this remedy restores equilibrium quickly, it brings about a sense of peace and joy! There are 38 Bach remedies in total. I prefer using Healing Herbs Bach remedies which are made as per the original procedure that Dr Bach set down. In practice I work with lots of different remedies as there are many different types available such as: Australian Bush essences, Alaskan essences, and Perelandra essences, which are made in America and have very specific healing qualities. Nutrition Nutritional changes can have a great effect on helping to deal with stress. Eliminating foods that create more stress in the body in the way of inflamation for example can impact significantly. Alkalising the diet by removing acid forming foods and eating more alkaline foods can also be very beneficial. Many nutritionists refer to the stomach as the 2nd brain and so having good digestive health is very important. Things like natural yogurt and probiotics including fermented foods like kefir and cider vinegar can greatly improve digestive health. Adding specific herbal remedies such as lemon balm St. John's wort and valerian, as examples, can also be beneficial for some. I can offer basic advice on this to support the hands-on therapy work I will do in a session. However, for more in depth advice on nutrition it might be beneficial to see a nutritional therapist. Taking time Taking some time for you each week or each day can be very beneficial to your health and well being. Five or ten minutes spent alone either sat down or lying down and clearing the mind can have a significant benefit on health. It slows the heart rate and can calm the nervous system. Meditation is also another wonderful way of clearing and calming the mind. Energy techniques There are many techniques that are used in Kinesiology that can help with stress and also help you be happier, more confident, and focused. I share one of my favourites. Recalling the things that make you happy is a well used and well known technique used by many therapists in order to effect positive changes in our body biochemistry. Take 5 minutes right now • Recall one thing that makes you smile. • Really get into thinking about whatever it is. • Pay attention to how this feels in your body. Do you feel heat anywhere? Are you beginning to feel a warm glow in your solar plexus area? Is your breathing slowing down? • When you have spent about two minutes thinking about whatever it is and experiencing how it makes you feel, take your index finger and tap the space between your eyes whilst still thinking. Do this for around 30 seconds or more if it feels good. This technique literally taps the thought and feeling in at a
cellular level. The more you do this, the easier it will be to recall happy memories and your body will respond by relaxing. Several other significant and beneficial changes also occur in the body's biochemistry. I will talk to you about additonal techniques like these in therapy sessions and will probably give homework that can be done between sessions! I also regularly run a Wellness Workshop incorporating similar techniques to this. Please get in touch for more information.

OUR SPECIES of the month glamourous species, perhaps, but nonetheless fascinating.
T
his year, Herefordshire Wildlife Trust is beginning a new series taking a closer look at one key species of flora or fauna each month. We will discuss some facts and figures and also highlight some of the best places in the county to spot them. We’d love you to get involved too by letting us know when you see any of these species in Herefordshire. For January we are kicking off by examining yellow meadow ants, and their more commonly spotted homes: ant hills! Not the most 38
The anthills of the yellow meadow ant Yellow meadow ants (Lasius flavus) live together in colonies which can be made up of over 5000 individuals. Together they dig through the soil to create intricate underground networks and spaces and deposit the excavated soil on the surface. This builds to form an anthill which can get up to a metre tall though most you see are around 30 – 40 centimetres. The active movement of these ants can make the anthills feel warm to the touch in summer months. This attracts basking butterflies, reptiles and the common field grasshopper which lays its eggs on these hills. The
warm, dry crumbly soil on top of the anthills is also a great place to find small but interesting plants like early forget-me-not, ladies bedstraw and wild thyme. The ants play another part in the food web too – as lunch. Ants can make up as much as 80% of the green woodpecker’s winter diet. It has an extraordinarily long tongue which it protrudes deep into the ant hill. No doubt a welcome meal on a cold day for many birds overwintering here. Where to see them Winter is a good time to see ant hills as grass and vegetation has died back leaving the tussocky hummocks exposed. They are found on grassy areas (hence the name meadow ants!) but only those which have not had tractors and machinery driven over them

Weekend Hedge Laying Courses Saturday 9th - Sunday 10th January Saturday 16th - Sunday 17th January Saturday 30th - Sunday 31st January In these 2 day courses you will thin, lay and bind a stretch of double-brushed hedge. The completed work contributes to the restoration of the valuable hedgerow habitats at this SSSI reserve as well as keeps traditional rural skills alive. Venue: Birches Farm, Kington, Herefordshire, HR5 3EY. Cost: £60 HWT members, £70 non members. Places are limited so booking is essential. Book online at www.herefordshirewt.org or call 01432 356872
as they are too fragile to survive being squashed. This means that they are now commonly associated with what are termed ‘species rich’ meadows where a lack of improvement (by application of fertilizers or pesticides) has allowed a wide variety of flora to flourish – in turn supporting a wide range of invertebrates, birds and mammals. So, if you’re out looking for ant hills, you might see lots of other wonderful things too! Some of our reserves are particularly good for seeing anthills. Explore Common Hill or Wessington pasture just west of Ledbury, near Fownhope or, further afield, visit the Christopher Cadbury reserve, Woodside or Crow Wood, where pied flycatchers have also been seen feeding from the ant hills. Get in touch If you do spot any ant hills please do let us know! You can submit records online at www. herefordshirewt.org, email them to us at records@herefordshirewt.co.uk or write to us at Lower House Farm, Ledbury Road, Hereford, HR1 1UT. Ledbury Focus

Book online at www.herefordshirewt.org or call 01432 356872 Wassail at Lower House Farm orchard Friday 15th January 4am - 7pm Herefordshire Wildlife Trust will offer a bit of post Christmas cheer and seek to ensure a bountiful apple harvest with a wassail, an ancient ceremonial celebration of the apple harvest which seeks to bless the fruit trees in traditional orchards. So come help the Trust to awaken the cider apple trees in its traditional orchard and scare away the evil spirits to ensure a good harvest of fruit in the autumn. There will be a chance to savour a bowl of Rocket Café’s homemade soup to beat the cold and to sample some of Orchard Origins’ mulled cider and apple juice. There will also be the chance to learn some wassailing songs from our merry band of musician singers and sing along with them around a fire. Wildlife in Focus
S
ince 2002 the population of goldfinches has increased by 80%. The success of the goldfinch appears to be largely due to the increasing popularity of feeding birds in our gardens, but the British Trust for Ornithology is wanting to find out exactly how important the food is we put out for the birds. Do goldfinches prefer nyger seed? Or would they rather sunflower hearts? Here its sunflower seeds. Go to the BTO website and you can take part in the goldfinch survey which lasts until the end of February. A success story is good news but there are other animals in dire straits. One is the much loved hedgehog. It seems inconceivable that they could be extinct in our children’s life time, but this is the plight of hedgehogs. Here again we can all do our bit to help because hedgehogs love gardens.
longer grass and piles of prunings in a quiet corner and never use slug pellets; hedgehogs love slugs so leave them to control your invertebrates. Extra food in spring and autumn can help save a hedgehog’s life. Never feed bread and milk, dog or cat food is fine and some clean water.
Hedgehogs need four or five gardens so if you think they’re in your area chat to your neighbours about cutting small holes in your fences so that our prickly friend can move between them. Don’t be too tidy. Leave areas of fallen leaves,
Collectively we can do much to help our wildlife as shown by the success with goldfinches. Much of what we can do doesn’t require huge effort or money, all it needs is for us to ‘think wildlife’ and factor them into our gardening lives.
Ledbury Focus
An elder bush outside my kitchen window should’ve been cut down long ago as it’s growing through a chaenomeles but I’ve always found a reason to keep it; the flowers provide nectar, the berries food for the birds, and it’s a place where the blue tits eat the food they’ve taken from the feeders. One morning I was astonished when I looked up from making porridge to find myself staring into the eyes of a sparrow hawk. Once again I rushed for my camera with little hope of the bird being there when I got back, but I was in luck. Maybe you will be too if you ‘think wildlife in 2016.’ It may not be a sparrow hawk that visits but what ever wildlife comes to your garden, you will be giving it a safe haven.

Christmas conflict final straw for many, claims Ledbury law expert
T
he festive season is generally a special time for families, but it is not always the case with it often being the watershed for many marriage break ups, say Ledbury law experts, DF Legal. Christmas conflict after a bad 2015 will see couples heading to law firms in January to seek a divorce, claims family law expert Wayne Phillips. “Sadly Christmas is a time when problems can come to a head,” he said. “It is the time of the year when an illicit affair becomes harder to cover because of family pressures, and also when couples in rocky relationships reflect on the 12 months gone and some decide they want a new start.” “To add to this, when you consider rows through people being around each other more and financial worries due to the cost of Christmas, it shows why
the early part of a New Year is generally the busiest time of year for family lawyers,” he added. Mr Phillips said the tales of difficult holiday periods are often cited when divorce cases get underway. “Couples do their best for the sake of the family to create the best Christmas possible, but this becomes impossible,” he said. “If there are tensions it can soon manifest in a nasty way and make for an extremely unpleasant situation.” He added that DF Legal is well placed to help due to their experience in this area and the ability to treat each case on its own merits. “As a family lawyer, I am not going to pretend that going through a break up is anything other than tough, which can sometimes get tougher before it improves,” he said.
“However, what all our clients share is that they are going through one of the most gruelling times of their lives and we bear this in mind, so we can offer the best level of support through a tough period,” added Mr Phillips, whose firm is based at The Southend in the town. “We also offer a low fixed fee to start with and discuss all the options available,” added Mr Phillips. “In short, we do all we can possibly do to make a hard time as easy as possible.” Anybody wishing to talk to DF Legal about divorce or separation or any other legal matters can do so by calling 01531 633222

Advice for Householders (from National Fly-Tipping Prevention Group)
I
f you find yourself with waste which cannot be disposed of through your normal council waste collection service there are a plenty of commercial waste collection companies who can assist you for a fee.
Check. Ask for their waste carrier registration details, and verify them by checking the online register or by calling 03708 506 506. Note down the registration number of the vehicle used to take your waste away.
Before engaging anyone, it is a good idea to check with your local council to see if your waste can be collected by them as a special collection (for which a charge may be made) or taken to a local council household waste and recycling centre where it can normally be disposed of for free.
Refuse unsolicited offers to have any rubbish taken away. Always carry out your own research and choose who you wish to approach.
All householders have a legal ‘duty of care’ to ensure that waste is only given to people who are registered waste carriers. It is an offence to fail to make these checks. You could face an unlimited fine if your waste ends up fly-tipped and you cannot show that you took reasonable steps to prevent it. Whenever you are considering arranging for anyone other than your local council service provider to collect any waste from your household, always follow the SCRAP code: Suspect. Beware of rogue waste carriers – reputable companies do not usually make direct approaches. If in any doubt as to whether someone is a legitimate waste carrier, do not allow them to take your waste. 48
Ask questions. Always ask what exactly is going to happen to your rubbish and seek evidence that it is going to be disposed of appropriately. A legitimate, professional waste carrier who wants your business should not object to being asked reasonable questions.
Citizens' Academy will offer people in the area a new and engaging opportunity to learn about and experience the day-today workings of their local police force. This programme provides local people over the age of 18 with a unique insight into West Mercia Police's work to protect the community from harm, and improve residents' quality of life. Paperwork. Make sure you get a proper receipt containing the written information for your waste. This should include what has been removed, and where it will be going. Make sure the Company or tradesman’s details are included. Further information on how to prevent fly-tipping and the Flytipping Partnership Framework can be found on the NFTPG website. Christmas Lights Switch On 2015
Westons’ Dray brought Father Christmas to town!
Ledbury Town Council would like to thank everyone who attended the Christmas Lights Switch On Event on Saturday 28th November.
A lot of hard work goes into organising this event and the Town Council would like to thank everyone involved in making the day a success: Ledbury Dance Company · Silurian Morris Dancers · Community Brass Band · Community Choir · Countrywide Stores · Westons Visitor Centre · Co-op · Glass House Opticians · Wellworth It · J Mart · ABE Ltd · Ledbury News · Bamboo Florists · Handley Organics · Little Shop of Wonders · RS Maintenance Ltd and last but not least Father Christmas and his little helpers! Without the help and generosity of volunteers, local businesses and all those who donated via the Christmas Lights donation boxes the event would not take place.

In Ledbury we shall be organising inter-church discussion groups which will meet in homes during Lent. Some groups will meet during the morning or afternoon, and others in the evenings – always on a weekday. We will share the same study material, entitled: Spot the Difference, which asks what difference our faith makes to aspects of our lives. The groups will be inaugurated with a short act of worship in St Katherine’s Hall on the evening of Wednesday 3rd February, followed by an informal opportunity to meet group leaders and others taking part in the programme. Although there will be signing- up sheets in each of the Ledbury churches in the new year, it will still be possible to join the programme on the 3rd February.

Brain Surgery ... ? In the hospital the relatives gathered in the waiting room, where their family member lay gravely ill. Finally, the doctor came in looking tired and sombre. "I'm afraid I am the bearer of bad news" she said, as she surveyed the worried faces. "The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant. It's an experimental procedure, very risky, and you will have to pay for the brain yourselves." The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news. After a while, someone asked, "Well, how much does a brain cost?"
t: 01531 631149
m: 07970 717337
The doctor replied, "ÂŁ5000 for a male brain, and ÂŁ200 for a female brain."
106 Bridge Street Ledbury ď‚&#x; HR8 2AN
The moment turned awkward. The men in the room tried not to smile, avoiding eye contact with the women, but some actually smirked. Finally, one man, unable to contain his curiosity, blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask: "Why is the male brain so much more expensive?"
Your best friend in business
The doctor smiled at the child-like innocence, and said, "It's just standard pricing procedure. We have to mark down the price of the female brains, because they've been used."
Managing your business finances has never been easier

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
WOODEN STRUCTURES
in a Garden
W
ooden structures give height in a very confined space or the strategic positioning of a structure could even draw your eye to a designated area of the garden, should you wish it to become a focal point for any visitors. The main use of a wooden structure is in offering support to a climber, where it needs something to grow up or tangle between in order to support itself. Choosing the right climber is very 66
important; climbers are designed to grow to the top of something then flourish. Varieties like ivy grow to the top of trees. At its adult stage it doesn’t actually climb, but fruits providing food for the birds to pick. It also kills the tree by cutting out the light. The treetop vegetation then acts like a sail and the wind can bring down a tree in this state. Ivy will then seek out the next tree and climb up it.
When Choosing a Climber Against a wooden structure, you want to choose a climber that is a relevant size in height to the wooden structure you are putting up. Most common, a rose arch is specifically designed for roses. If you put a Wisteria on a rose arch it will swamp it, so much so that you won’t even be able to walk through it without a machete! For various climbers, in a confined space where an arch isn’t feasible, a simple post with some horizontal brackets coming off it would be enough to support a clematis, or something similar, in very a small back garden. With arches and wooden structures, gazebos that you stand under, the structure itself can help to hold scent in, so getting a rose to flower at head height allows the fragrance to permeate through your senses as you walk through the arch giving both visual and aromatic pleasure. Wisteria is the same. A Dead Tree If you have an old tree that has died off and you pollard it back

retaining the main trunks, this is a great climbing frame for various roses; the Banksia rose, that isn’t prickly, will again flourish in an apple tree which is alive, as long as it doesn’t overpower it.
sit under roses, etc., but when they drop their blossom this can cover everything. Wisteria would be far better, since it drops less. A grapevine again would drop less petals and flowers.
An avenue of rose arches, or a leading point, will focus the eye down the centre of a garden, where you could create another area of the garden for an interested person to walk to. Placing a simple structure or a feature at the end of the avenue, almost as a full stop in a garden, will also attract the eye down the avenue towards it.
When pruning climbers on a rose arch or wooden structure, make sure you prune back to the main structure of the plant. For example, Honeysuckle grows from a top joint and then falls over the old growth cutting off the light and killing it off. It then becomes much thicker, which is obviously great for wildlife, but it can make a rose arch etc. look lopsided and this additional weight can cause damage or pull them down in winds.
A structure such as a gazebo that you sit underneath or something that comes off the house, this is great for shade, but you also want to take into consideration what you might be growing on it. For arguments sake, it is very nice to
Things to do in the garden this month: Remember to keep turning your compost and then re-sheet.
February/March will be the time to start to use it on your beds. The bulbs you planted in November have started to come up. I would always recommend taking photos of the area to record and remind you where the bulbs are. You may wish to put a new plant in that area, or add more bulbs the following year. If you have any fencing or wooden structure that need attention, now is the time to act as most plants are dormant and you can get behind them to repair or paint. It is also much easier to see what needs to be done when all herbaceous plants are cut down to ground level. Any replacement work can be done at the same time. Next month I will look at splitting a garden into rooms.
If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions.
