The Green Waste Club is
Blooming Good! I
f you’re frustrated by having to make trips to get rid of your garden waste at the tip, are buying garden waste sacks from the council, or are concerned about what happens to your garden waste, here’s some good news – a new, efficient and affordable garden waste collection service has just launched in Herefordshire. Called the Green Waste Club (GWC), the service is the brainchild of waste and recycling company Biffa, and will be available from 3rd July to residents in Hereford, Ledbury, Leominster, Bromyard and Ross-on-Wye. The GWC concept is simple and effective. In return for a modest subscription, each Club customer gets a 240 litre wheeled bin which can be filled with lawn clippings, prunings, leaves and leaf fall, small branches and other garden waste. Biffa’s experienced crew from its neighbouring Forest of Dean team then collect and empty GWC wheeled bins into their dedicated 26 tonne recycling truck every fortnight (barring Christmas).
Going Green The Club ensures that the best use is made of its green waste by sending it for recycling into compost at Rose Hill Recycling in Dymock. This avoids the common practice of sending garden waste to landfill and the damaging production of methane gas, so benefiting the environment.
4
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
By joining the GWC, you can get all the benefits of a reliable, regular garden waste collection service for less than £5 a month. If you sign up for 12 months, you pay an initial £69, comprising a one-off £15 charge for having a bin delivered to your property and then £54 for the year (if paying by direct debit) – that’s just £4.50 a month, or the cost of a couple of coffees! If you’ve got a larger garden or lawn, you can always get a second GWC wheeled bin to help take care of the extra waste produced. And if you and neighbours have only got small gardens, you can club together to share the cost of a bin subscription – that’s customer-friendly service! You can use a debit or credit card to pay your GWC subscription, either monthly or annually, with a direct debit arrangement offering best value. A 10% discount is offered for signing up for 24 months, with a 20% discount for 36 months.
Established and Successful Biffa set up the first GWC in 2005 in Sussex, and now operates six clubs across the country (Arun, Surrey Heath, Tandridge, Portsmouth, Melton and East Northamptonshire). The Clubs’ current membership is 56,466, who have so far recycled

July, as always, is the month in which the Ross on Wye Steam Engine Society hold their annual Steam & Country Rally in Welland. The dates for your diary this year are 28th to 30th July do go along and enjoy the fun, as this really is a spectacular event with something for everyone and a great day out. Last month we had the Ledbury Community Day, which was a great success and enjoyed by all, participating organisations and public alike. I particularly enjoyed meeting so many people from Ledbury, and a bit "thank you" to all those people who took the trouble to tell me how much they like the Ledbury Focus. And to the gentleman who said he looks forward to the "funnies" each month, I hope you enjoy this month's selection! This month we have the Great Ledbury Celebration on Sunday 9th July, so make a note of the date and go along and join in the celebrations.

Ledbury Town Council News
O
Cllr Elaine Fieldhouse Mayor of Ledbury
ur new Mayor, Cllr Elaine Fieldhouse is delighted that the Council is working with the Poetry Festival, Ledbury Food Group and the Friends of the Master’s House to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Market House. The Great Ledbury Celebration will take place on 9th July. The activities and attractions will be many and varied, involving a wide range of Ledbury groups and societies.
DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN AWARDS Much of Ledbury’s success is down to the hard of work of volunteers. At the Annual Town Meeting in April the following residents received the town’s Distinguished Citizen Award:
There will be music, dancing and of course poetry – and what birthday would be complete without a birthday cake? Local producers will be offering their wares, including locally produced ales, ciders and fruit juices. To bring history to life, LADS will be performing over a 2 hour period at various locations, finishing up at the Market House.
Mary Every Mary is well known for her work with the Country Market, the Civic Society and Ledbury in Bloom.
A number of competitions have been in progress in the run up to the celebration. View the entries to the Art and Photography competition in the Market House. There is also a cake baking competition. Will we be able to taste the cakes? Come along and find out. Activities for children will range from Looby Loo and Joey the Juggler (funding sponsored by the Traders Association), to face painting. Leaflets with more details of all the activities will be available in the run up to the day. Huge thanks go to all members of the Events Working Party, who have been working since early in the year to make this a fun day for all the family.

A Companion To Walk The Journey With You
F
or the first time in history, there are 11 million people aged 65 or over in the UK, and this is likely to rise to 20 million by the year 2030. The Care Quality Commission tells us that more people want to maintain their independence, and stay in familiar surroundings for as long as possible, which is where AcerCare comes in. The Malvern-based firm has around 100 clients in and around Ledbury, Malvern, Worcester and Bromyard, and offers quality home-care tailored to individual circumstances. Whether it’s assistance with housework, bill payments and meal preparation or bathing, dressing and medication reminders, AcerCare’s friendly team of compassionate care-givers take the stress out of routine chores, but encourages clients to maintain their usual routine, safe in the knowledge that there is someone on hand, when needed. All AcerCare clients enjoy customised care plans, and are involved in the decision-making at every step of the way. It’s not always easy to accept help from strangers of course, and the AcerCare team is committed to making sure that those it cares for retain their privacy, dignity and personal pride, by way of a plan which works with existing lifestyles, and doesn’t compromise personal space. Some of the firm’s clients have been formally diagnosed with dementia, and others are struggling with similar symptoms which haven’t been fully diagnosed. It also has a number of stroke victims within its clientele, as the two conditions can often overlap. Said AcerCare MD, Richard Turner: “Dementia can present challenges outside the standard care remit, and sufferers almost always benefit most from care by those who have added training and experience in the field. The condition is often perceived as memory loss, but it can also affect the way people think, speak, see, feel and behave, even if they are still leading an active, healthy life with hobbies, friends and relationships. Difficulties in communicating, physical co-ordination and concentration can lead to loss of confidence, so home care

should suit the particular circumstances. Our care-givers are trained in offering moral support and companionship to combat the feeling of isolation, and our visits are long enough to deliver what is required, to match individual needs.” If you, or a loved one could benefit from AcerCare’s services, then call the team on 01684 568001 for a chat. For more information, head over to the web site: www. acercare.co.uk or find them on Facebook & Twitter.

Age Is No Barrier To Volunteering!

olunteering is one of the most rewarding things you can do. By offering your time, life skills and experience, you can help older people in your community improve their quality of life and maintain their independence and wellbeing. Many people find that volunteering helps with the transition into retirement but age is no barrier to volunteering. If you can smile – you can volunteer! Volunteering is helping, not hiring; giving, not taking; contributing, not counting. Volunteering is about ordinary people doing extraordinary things. The value of volunteering is priceless! Have you got the time, please? At Age UK Hereford & Localities we are currently looking for volunteers to support our services and help us make a difference to the lives of older people in Ledbury, including:
Ledbury Focus
Reaching You Service - The service offers a wide range of support including practical help with tasks that can become more difficult for them to do themselves. Could you help someone to take their first steps in using a computer? Could you take someone shopping or mow their lawn? Perhaps you would enjoy recording someone’s life story and memories? Ledbury Lunch Club - The Lunch Club meets once a month at the Community Centre in Lawnside Road. Join our existing volunteers, providing a friendly face and happy atmosphere for older people to get
together, enjoy lunch and each other’s company. Footcare Service – volunteer as a “cutter” for our much needed footcare service which is held at Harling Court several times a month. This is a simple toenail cutting service, helping people to remain safe and steady on their feet. Full training is provided. Office and Administration - helping with reception, admin and data inputting in our office based in the Master’s House.
We welcome new volunteers regardless of age. We appreciate the skills and telephone: 0333 0066 299 experience they bring, email: contact@ageukhl.org helping us to support www.ageuk.org.uk/herefordandlocalities older members of our community so that they Registered Charity Number: 1093512 maintain their dignity, Company Number: 04393515 health and independence. Easy recognizable for its wooden packaging and its red gingham cloth which was added to the brand by chance when a paper broker, bothered by a very large stock of gingham cloth, suggested that they should be used to place the camembert in the box. Since then it has always been used.

Using ericaceous compost in a container will allow an acid loving plant like a Pieris to flourish in a garden with limey soil.
Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
CONTAINERS & POTS
J
uly is here which normally means hot weather, and in hot weather people begin to moan about watering their pots. This really should not be the case as containers and pots add so much to a garden of any size, large or small. They should be embraced rather than seen as a chore to water. Any item that can hold a plant can be used as a container, from an old kettle to a dustbin. The container itself can be even more interesting or
20
In some of my designs I have used pots to my advantage. For a plant like Gunnera Manicata (its common name is the prickly rhubarb and when fully grown has leaves big enough to sit under) I lined the container with a bin bag without holes, then filled it with soil to create a bog area.
colourful than the plant in it. Place the item in full view to offer a surprise as you walk round the corner.
If the effort of watering puts you off the idea of planting up a pot or container, then there are a few gadgets on the market that can help, from bottle drips to water crystals. My preferred option would be to line the pot as mentioned above, depending on the choice of plant.
Containers and pots give the gardener more options for planting, including softening an area of hard landscaping and enabling a plant to be grown in an environment where it would not normally grow. For example, placing a few pots of simple bedding plants on a tarmac drive will add colour in an instant to an otherwise black and barren area.
Beware of Pests One major pest to look out for is the vine weevil and its larva. They love dry warm pots in which to lay their eggs (about 20 at a time). The eggs hatch into maggots that develop into adults without a cocoon, so they can look a bit odd if you come across them at this stage. These bugs will eat the roots of your potted plants.

To prevent attack, try to encourage natural enemies. Vine weevils and their grubs are eaten by a variety of predators such as birds, frogs, toads, shrews, hedgehogs and predatory ground beetles. Alternatively, use a microscopic pathogenic nematode (Steinernema kraussei) which is available from suppliers of biological controls. For best results apply in August or early September when the soil temperature is warm enough for the nematode to be effective (5°C 20°C/41°F - 68°F) and before the grubs have grown large enough to cause serious damage. Garden Tasks for July yy Plant out successions of salad crops for continued harvesting throughout the summer. yy Sow seeds for cool-season crops directly into the garden by midJuly (such as radishes and lettuce). yy Those empty areas of the garden, where the crops have finished,
should be replanted with either a fall vegetable crop, or a cover crop of clover or vetch to help control weeds. Cover crops can be tilled into the soil later, to add humus and nitrates to the soil. yy Summer blooming shrubs should be pruned for shape after they have finished flowering. Remove any dead or diseased branches. yy Fertilize flowering shrubs like Rhododendrons and Azaleas, as well as Camellias, immediately after they have finished flowering with a ‘Rhododendron’ or ‘Evergreen’ type fertilizer. Dead head the developing seed pods from your Rhododendrons and Azaleas to improve next year’s bloom. Be careful not to damage next year’s buds which may be hidden just below the pod.
roots cool and moist you can prolong the flowering season by a few more weeks. A little mid-day shade will also help to maintain the quality of the flowers and prolong the blooming season. yy Continue to dead head (remove dead flowers) your annual plants to encourage continued blooming. If your annuals have died off, pull them out and add them to the compost pile.
yy Sweet Peas may tend to fizzle out with the hot summer weather, but with heavy mulching to keep the

I
n this article, I share with you some information on how we can balance our kidney and adrenal health for general health and vitality. I will also share with you some self-help tips for stimulating energy and giving you more vitality. Location of the kidneys and adrenals The kidneys are located on the back of the body on each side in the region bounded superiorly by the twelfth rib, medially by the vertebral column and inferiorly by the superior lilac crest. The adrenal glands are located just above the kidneys on both sides, each gland has an outer cortex and an inner medulla. Physical function of the kidneys and adrenals The primary physical function of the kidneys is to remove waste products of metabolism from our bodies. Our kidneys perform essential activities to the urinary system and also serve homeostatic functions such as the regulation of electrolytes,
maintenance of acid-base balance and regulation of blood pressure. The kidneys work to filter the blood and remove water soluble wastes which are diverted to the bladder. The adrenal glands are endocrine glands and they produce a variety of hormones including adrenaline, cortisol and aldosterone. The kidney and adrenals work together synergistically to regulate several body functions one of the main functions, for example, is blood pressure. The kidneys make renin which tells the adrenals to make hormones that regulate fluid volume, vascular tension and sodium levels. Kidney health and Traditional Chinese Medicine In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) our kidneys are where we store our vital energy and general vitality. The balance of kidney energy is crucial and essential to good overall health and balance. When

the kidneys are well the qi or energy in a person is balanced and well and this qi / energy can be distributed as it is needed. When the kidneys are damaged this ability to distribute qi / energy becomes impaired. A TCM practitioner, Acupuncturist or Kinesiologist would generally work to stimulate the kidney meridian by gently massaging or needling points on the kidney meridian and on the bladder meridian. This stimulation would help balance the kidney energy and kidney health would become balanced as a result. In practice, I would use a combination of the Bowen kidney procedure along with some kinesiology based self-help tips for balancing the meridian and some very specific nutritional guidance. Situations that can affect kidney and adrenal balance may include: • Over excursion of any sort • Stress • Fear • Dehydration / over hydration • Infections • Nutritional deficiencies • Specific health issues • Excessive alcohol consumption • Consumption of stimulants • Excessive exercise • Some pharmaceutical drugs Problems that may arise with kidney and adrenal imbalance include: • Dizziness • Tiredness and exhaustion • Headaches / Migraine • Abdominal pain • Pain in back, thighs and knees • Arthritic conditions • Urinary infections • High blood pressure Ledbury Focus

How you can help your kidneys and adrenals Tap your K1 and K27 points – The K1 point is the start point of the kidney meridian and is situated just below the ball of the foot on both sides. If you bunch your fingers together and tap or gently massage this area you will hit the point. In Traditional Chinese Medicine this point is called the “wellspring of life” point because it is considered so potent at balancing not only kidney energy but enhancing general vitality and well-being. The K27 point is the end-point of the kidney meridian. The K27s are located on each side of the body, just below your clavicle, you will feel a slight dip/indent. If you bunch your fingers together and tap this area it will help to energise the kidney meridian. Drink beetroot juice – Beetroot is a wonderful kidney tonic either eaten raw or as a juice, it will really benefit the kidneys. Buckwheat, beans, brown rice and sea vegetables are also excellent kidney foods. Keep hydrated – when we are dehydrated the kidneys don’t function as well as they should but do not over hydrate the body otherwise the kidneys will have to work much harder. Book a Bowen treatment – in Bowen we have a specific procedure that can address the kidneys and adrenals. This procedure works at a physical level to address problems in these areas but also at a subtle level addressing the kidney meridian. In practice, I use this procedure for a multitude of symptoms including; back problems, adrenal exhaustion, fatigue, ME, specific kidney related problems i.e. infections, bladder problems, Incontinence, oedema, dizziness, lymphatic blockage, fear/fright, arthritic conditions and on occasion knee problems. 29

The Great Ledbury Celebration Food, Drink, Music, Poetry & Heritage Sunday 9th July 2017 • 11am to 6pm
T
he traditional Ledbury Celebration, held on the last day of the Ledbury Poetry Festival, becomes “Great” this year and moves to Ledbury’s historic High Street Market Place to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the iconic Market House, in a birthday treat of food, drink, music, poetry, entertainment and heritage. Arrangements for the event bring together organisations across Ledbury to put together a very special day, including Ledbury Town Council, Ledbury Poetry Festival, Ledbury Food Group, the Friends of the Master’s House, the Youth Council, the Ledbury Fringe, local businesses, traders and performers. A large street market featuring the best of local food and produce will fill the High Street, with special treats to enjoy straightaway or take home, including stalls featuring locally produced fruit juices served in interesting ways. A fabulous selection of poets, musicians, bands and dancers will provide continuous and varied entertainment near the Market House – including the Community Brass Band, Dancefest, the Sequins, Samba Galêz, the Silurian Morris Men and “local boy” beat-box performer, Dave Crowe. The Market House and all Ledbury’s other heritage buildings will be open emphasising Ledbury’s “joined up heritage”. LADs will enter the spirit enabling you to meet characters from old Ledbury, culminating in a performance under the Market House. The Market House will host an art and photo exhibition of young people’s work with a Ledbury theme, organised by the Youth Council and including entries in a “birthday card for the Market House” competition. It will host an exhibition showing the history of the building – and a special birthday cake and commemorative brochure will mark the 400th anniversary. The popular Clapper Box theatre will join the day to provide puppetry fascination for all ages. The Ledbury Celebration is a fixture in the local food and drink calendar on the last day of Ledbury’s annual Poetry Festival and brings out all that is best about Ledbury. Full details of the event including the detailed programme for the day will be available nearer the date at the Ledbury Food Group website, www.ledburyfoodgroup.org. Ledbury Focus

onds come in all shapes and sizes (though anything over 2 hectares is classed as a lake.) Some are natural landscape features which have been formed by natural processes – for example, glacial erosion. Others are man-made, created perhaps as watering holes for livestock or in someone’s garden. But all are fantastic for wildlife! Many historic ponds have been lost in recent decades. With modern watering systems, ponds are rarely used for livestock on farms today and are often filled in. Similarly, as our
34
Ponds are also threatened by nonnative species such as floating pennywort, parrot's feather and New Zealand pigmy weed and also fish. These can quickly take over in a pond, out-competing less vigorous native species or – in the case of fish – simply eating them! Wildlife to spot The banks of ponds are often edged with damp-loving species of plants and grasses which you rarely see elsewhere. These include water crowfoot, water forget-me-not and yellow flag iris. Skimming the surface are pond skaters and whirligig beetles or you might spot a frog or toad slipping into the water.
Pond-dipping is many children’s first introduction to studying wildlife at close quarters and there is a whole world of mini-beasts to discover below the surface. Spot pond snails, dragonfly and damselfly larvae, diving beetles and daphnia – amongst many more! A full ‘how to pond-dip’ guide is available from our website but, most importantly, remember to put all creatures safely back into the pond from which they came! Where to find them There is a recently restored network of ponds across Bromyard Downs, Bringsty Common and the National Trust Brockhampton Estate. These had become overgrown and were cleared and dug out in 2016. The pond life has flooded back! You will also see some fantastic ponds on Herefordshire Wildlife Trust reserves

oes your dog seem to be a little more sluggish than normal? Or is your cat reluctant to groom? This could be down to arthritic changes in their joints.
The most common form of arthritis is Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease). This is a chronic and progressive condition of the joints, where the joint cartilage which normally forms on a pad at the end of each bone, breaks down and the bone surfaces rub against each other. This causes swelling, stiffness, pain and a restricted movement in the joint. Although arthritis cannot usually be cured, there are several things that we can do to help, these include: Weight control: overweight pets tend to struggle far more with stiffness and arthritis than slender ones, this is because the extra weight puts more strain on the joints. Exercise regimes: this can also make a difference. Most stiff dogs will benefit from two or three shorter walks every day rather than one long one every day. Some dogs can also Ledbury Focus
ACHES & PAINS is your pet affected? benefit from hydrotherapy and physiotherapy Supportive medication: there are various medications that can help your pet feel more comfortable, these include oral medication that you can administer at home or injections in to the joint (these are done under general anaesthetic). If you are concerned about your pet’s mobility, or would just like some advice, please contact the surgery. Troublesome Ticks With the weather warming up and dogs going for more walks in the countryside, we are seeing an increasing number of ticks. They live in the long grass and woodland areas waiting to latch on to passing pets. Once the ticks has attached to the pet, they feed on your pet’s blood – often for several days.
There are several effective ways of controlling ticks, including spot ons, collars and a very effective tablet that gives three months protection. The main issues with ticks, is that they carry diseases in their saliva, which they can potentially transmit to pets: Lyme Disease: this is the primary tick borne pathogen in the UK and Ireland, it can affect dogs and humans Babesiosis: another tick borne disease which may affect dogs (but not humans) travelling to and from mainland Europe

The Surprises of Soldeu Mountain
article & photos by Pamela Green
I
f like my husband Michael, and I, you like to travel and explore Europe, then I'm sure you have heard of Andorra. It is a small country about the same size as Dartmoor, and is nestled between France and Spain, in the Pyrenees. Most people will know it as a fantastic place to ski, but it is also a spectacular place for sight seeing. Everywhere you look you will see snow top peaks, cable cars, ski lifts, and fantastic scenery. Between the months of June and September, when the snow has disappeared it is a breathtaking place; everywhere you look you will see majestic mountains and stunning views. Beautiful chalets precariously perch on ledges half way up the mountains, and large birds of prey glide effortlessly on the warm thermals. Towards the end of our holiday we try to leave a few days for a visit to Andorra to see the spectacular sights. There is always one cable car that works all year round, but because of breakdowns or weather we have never managed to take advantage of this, that was until this holiday.
38
The cable car was working and open to thrill seekers, so we climbed aboard. We had longed for the opportunity to see the fantastic sights from the top of the Soldeu mountain, and we weren't disappointed. We found the car ride exhilarating and thrilling, all 2,250 metres of it, and what a surprise we had when we reached the summit. We found the place buzzing with thrill seeking mountain bike riders. The cable car lift had special racks on the front of each car for the mountain bikes, and the riders all had cameras strapped onto their helmets to film their daring rides. After having a sedate 20-minute ride in the cable car they took off down the track at tremendous hair-raising speeds, and we were told they would reach the bottom in 10 minutes. The incredibly steep track offers challenging elements, with loads of jumps and surprises. For their thrills the riders are expecting fun Blue Runs,* and technical steep Black Runs, and amazingly they do reach the bottom.
From the cable car we followed the path up to a platform where there was a cafe, the Club House Soldeu and a few shops, but what amazed us most was a nine hole golf course. This unique golf coarse is 2,250 metres above sea level, and is a well designed course that is a challenge for any player, irrespective of their handicap. For a few Euros you can use the driving range and hit golf balls into clear air. The Club Soldeu looses around 5,000 balls every season. Visitors can rent equipment and take lessons from a trained instructor. The course is open from July until September, from 10am until 7pm. Whether you're an adrenalin junkie or a serious golfer, Andorra is the place for you. *Editor's note: ski runs - in this case, bike runs - are rated according to difficulty by the colours Green, Blue and Black - green being the easiest, and black the hardest.

Room of Healing
nchant & Allure, Ledbury’s premier magical gift shop, has recently expanded into a range of holistic therapies, with the addition of a “Room of Healing”. This is a serene and tranquil private room that offers a range of ancient, natural healing therapies to clients.
Indian Head Massage Indian Head Massage, or Champisagge, is an ancient therapeutic treatment that has been practiced in India for thousands of years, and is incredibly relaxing. Part of the Hindu health care practice of Ayurveda, Indian Head Massage focuses on your head, neck and shoulders. It is a deep massage, which uses a variety of pressure and techniques that tap into your seven "'chakras" or paths of energy and encourage healing and balance in your whole body. In particular, this form of massage focuses on the three higher "chakras" - mind, body and spirit and as such hits your energy epicentre. Ayurveda is one of the great gifts of the Sages of Ancient India to mankind, and is one of the oldest medical systems in the world, based on the balance and uniqueness of each individual.
40
Indian Head Massage is carried out as a seated treatment, with or without the use of oils, and includes massage to the upper back, neck, shoulders, arms, head and face. There is no need to undress for this treatment. This therapy works effectively on physical, mental and subtle energy levels, helping you to reach a deep state of relaxation, dispel stress, tension, and anxiety linked symptoms. It is also highly recommended for the treatment of headaches, tinnitus, sinusitis, migraine, nightmares, insomnia, and neck and shoulder stiffness. An Indian Head Massage stimulates the flow of blood, lymph and oxygen in your upper body which will clear your sinuses, relieve stress and help you sleep better. Additional benefits derived from Indian Head Massage include increased levels of concentration, a sense of calmness and the release of stagnant energy through chakra balancing and energetic healing. Treatments help drain away toxins from the skin and muscles, aid rejuvenation, help with alopecia and promote lustrous, healthy hair.

Aromatherapy & Hot Stone Massage Inhaling essential oils through the nose is thought to promote beneficial changes in the mind and body by affecting the limbic system (a region of the brain known to influence the nervous system). Essential oils are also believed to be absorbed through the skin. Hot Stones Massage is an ancient therapy dating back over 5000 years, and originally used by the Indians, Mayans, Chinese, Tibetans and the American Indian shamans. It is performed using basalt stones which originate from volcanic eruption, and have the capacity to retain heat for much longer than other stones. The treatment has amazing decongestive effects on muscular and nervous tension, eliminating toxins, and creating a feeling of well-being for the client. This form of massage penetrates ten times deeper, and the benefits are said to last ten times longer than traditional techniques. Some of the many benefits of Hot Stones Massage: • Increases circulation bringing nourishment to the area • Relieves localised congestion, increases lymph flow and helps eliminate toxins • Promotes deep muscle relaxation, relieving areas of tension and pain • Promotes relaxation • Balances, sooths and uplifts • Induces a sense of well-being and alleviates stress • Opens the meridian pathways helping to restore energy and well-being • Say goodbye to everyday stresses and strains with a soothing massage. Your skin is treated to the incredibly soothing sensation of hands gliding over you with a mix of essential oils blended specifically for you. These oils are selected to suit your particular needs, whilst the expert touch of your therapist's hands melt away stress, ease tension and tired muscles, and leaves your body filled with renewed energy. Toxins are smoothed away by lymphatic drainage, helping your body to cope with the stresses and strains of the modern world! Enchant & Allure also offer Reflexology, Gong Meditation, Reiki, Tarot Card Reading & other divination. Call in, phone, or visit www.enchantandallure.co.uk for more details and booking. Ledbury Focus

CAT CARE HEALTH & SAFETY Tips from the International Cat Care Annual Conference
L
ucy Hill from Woodlands Country Cat Hotel recently attended the International Cat Care annual conference. Although the conference is primarily aimed at veterinary nurses, vets and other cat professionals it included some talks which will be of particular interest to all cat owners. Safety First Many of you probably know that chocolate, grapes and sultanas and members of the allium family are toxic to dogs, but they are also toxic to cats. Although cats are probably less likely to eat such foods than dogs you should still be careful. For example poisonings have occurred following ingestions of soups and baby foods that contain onion. As responsible pet owners you also need to check the cleaning and disinfectant products that you use as many can be highly irritant to cats. Follow the instructions on how to use any such products and whether they should be wiped clean. Make sure any spills of such products are promptly cleaned up as cats will lick their paws and fur clean if they accidentally come into contact with such items. You should treat your cat regularly for fleas but make sure the product you use is designed for felines. Some treatments for dogs contain permethrin which is highly toxic for cats and is still one of the most common poisonings in cats worldwide. Paracetamol is highly toxic to cats and just one quarter of a tablet can cause death in some cases so don't be tempted to give any to cats that are in pain. 44
Seek advice from your vet if necessary and only use properly prescribed medication. If you are a keen gardener or like cut flowers or plants in your home please be aware that some plants are toxic, particularly all species of lilium (true lily) and Hemerocallis (day lily). They can cause severe kidney damage in cats and all parts of the plant are toxic with ingestion of only tiny amounts being potentially fatal. If you do suspect your cat has come into contact with lilies prompt treatment is essential such as washing off any pollen on the coat and urgently seeing your vet. International Cat Care have lots more information on keeping cats safe and other cat care topics on their website. You can find it at icatcare.org Transporting Your Cat Most cat owners have experienced their cat going AWOL as soon as they see the cat basket coming out or perhaps even your cases being packed when preparing for holidays. You also know that many hate getting into their basket at home but scoot into it with no problem at the vets and are reluctant to come out. The good news is that you can train your cat to love their basket and to always see going into it as a good thing. Start by simply having the basket out at home all the time, perhaps in your bedroom or living room, with the door off and a cosy fleece inside. This may be enough to encourage your cat to see it as another cosy sleeping place or a refuge when spooked at all. If they need more encouragement start leaving a few treats inside for them to find or their favourite toy and continue with this until they voluntarily go inside.
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
At the cattery we keep the cat baskets in the sleeping area of the pens so the cats are used to their presence. Some cats like to use it as a hideaway, particularly whilst they are settling in. It is also possible to train your cat to come when called so the AWOL cat is a thing of the past! There are many videos of this on the Internet and at the conference Dr Sarah Ellis (International Cat Cares behaviour specialist) showed how she has trained her own cat to come when called so she never has to shut him in the night before a vet visit or going away. Woodlands Country Cat Hotel is a small modern indoor cattery. All nine pens have a window, sleeping shelf, panel radiators in the insulated sleeping area, heated bed pads in the colder months and a large run area.

Rodent Compost I
’ve always thought of myself as a country girl. After all I know the difference between a stoat and a weasel, a rabbit and a hare. I can name quite a few butterflies, and wild flowers and most common birds. Granted I get stuck when it comes to identifying bumble bees but who said that was easy? Even though I was born in a city, before I was two my parents moved to rural Norfolk and, apart from a brief sojourn in London, in rural England I have remained, so I think I can claim country girl status. Or at least so I thought until a certain incident involving a compost bin and a nest of baby creatures. One of the compost bins needed moving. Composting is not my forte. Hating to disturb the grass snakes and slow worms that make their homes in the bins, I rarely use the compost but on this occasion I decided to move the bin and start afresh. However, on lifting the lid and peering inside to check there were no reptiles in residence I spied a nest of a less welcome kind. Huddled together in a cosy little bundle, blind and without fur were three baby rodents. Rats. Aghast I hurriedly put the lid back and went off to think what to do. Poison was out of the question. I have four Ledbury Focus
hounds that would eat anything, including beetroot if it was stolen, and yes, that has happened. It was a week before I got back to the knotty problem of the rats. I know there are many of you who would suggest a violent solution but there are two problems with that idea - first, I was unable to move the bin which seemed to have welded itself to the ground making it almost impossible to easily get to the nest ,and second - and here’s a confession - I’m really not very good at killing things, even rats which I dislike intensely and is the only thing I have in common with Sir David Attenborough. I’m the sort of person who will spend ages shooing a wasp out of the window rather than squash it . . . how pathetic is that? I didn’t have any more idea of what to do with the rats than when I first discovered them so it was with some trepidation that I approached the bin a second time. Imagine my surprise then, when I lifted the bin lid to find something completely different snuggled up in their nest. Bigger, furrier and with distinctive ears . . . my baby rats had morphed into rabbits. Call myself a country girl? I’m beginning to think not! photo & article by Geraldine Holbourn

Wildlife Trust
comes to the Homend!
I
n June, the Trust opened the doors of its very first ‘charity shop’ at 4, The Homend, in Ledbury. The Trust’s staff and volunteers are more usually found in their native habitats of wildflower meadows and ancient woodlands but we’ve crept into the urban landscape for this new venture! Our Ledbury shop will sell donated items such as clothing, books, music and homewares but will also be a Wildlife Trust hub where people can find out more about our conservation work, nature reserves and events and activities which we run across the county. The money raised through the shop will all go to fund this work. The Trust manages 55 nature reserves – some just small wildflower meadows, others large swathes of grassland or woodland – which need regular management to maintain the optimum wildlife habitats and stay accessible to visitors. We also run
projects across wider landscapes, often in partnership with other organisations, landowners and communities. We are currently working along the Lower Lugg Valley and recently completed the Bromyard Downs project in association with the Bromyard Downs Commons Association. The other area of our work is to inspire and involve others in caring for wildlife too. We run activities for children throughout the school holidays at Queenswood Country Park, a monthly Wildlife Watch club and WildPlay sessions in towns across the county. For older wildlife enthusiasts, the Trust also runs guided walks, talks and workshops – many through its active local branch groups – and offers many volunteering opportunities in practical habitat management and wildlife surveying. If you are passionate about Herefordshire’s wildlife, a visit to our new shop is a great place to start! We are still a little short of donations so
do think of us if you’re having a clear out. Any clothing, accessories, books, CDs, DVDs, children’s toys and homewares would all be very greatly appreciated! (Unfortunately we cannot accept electrical items, prams or pushchairs.) We also have vacancies for volunteers. Shop volunteering is a great way to support our work without getting cold and muddy! It’s also great fun and a fantastic way to meet new friends. The shop will also have tons of information about Herefordshire Wildlife Trust and you can pop in to join as a member, pick up our nature reserve leaflets or find out about events taking place. Once we’ve settled in, we also plan to hold events at the shop – we’d love to hear any ideas you might have about what you’d like us to do. We have been warmly welcomed to Ledbury and would like to thank everyone for their fantastic support thus far whether through donations, offers of help or your words of support. We’re thrilled to be here!

JULY:
Scam Awareness Month
I
dentity fraud was the largest fraud carried out against individuals, nationally, according to the Annual Fraud Indicator 2016, estimated at £5.4bn a year. West Mercia Police are urging people to be aware of the risk of this type of crime and to make sure they follow some simple steps to reduce the chances of falling victim. July's awareness drive is being rolled out under the alliance's #BeCyberSmart campaign, and is placing a particular focus on phishing, malware, passwords, anti-virus and the importance of shredding documents containing personal details. There is only one you: keep it that way by protecting yourself against identity crime. The internet provides numerous opportunities for fraudsters to get hold of your personal data. Once a criminal has your details they can use them to commit identity fraud. They may be able to take over existing accounts, open new bank accounts, obtain credit cards, loans and state benefits, take out mobile phone contracts, order goods and get genuine documents in your name, such as passports, for example. Do you know how to protect yourself?
56
Your social media profile can be a goldmine of personal information for a fraudster - if you let them see it. One piece of personal information, such as your date of birth, can be used to commit fraud in your name. What are your privacy and security settings? Who can see what you share? How often do you change your password? #becybersmart Before throwing something away, think about the personal details it contains and how they could be used by a fraudster. Protect yourself against ID theft and ID fraud. Check out our campaign. Advice • If you receive an email from an unknown source asking for personal details do not give them out. • If the email looks like it is from a legitimate company do not disclose anything without checking that the request is genuinely from the company it purports to be. Check via another means, such as by phoning the company with a number you have sourced yourself and know is correct. • Mark suspicious emails as spam and delete them. • Think before clicking on links.
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
• Take care on public wi-fi - fraudsters hack them or mimic them. If you're using one avoid accessing sensitive apps such as mobile banking, alternatively use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). • Visit Action Fraud and Get Safe Online for further information and advice. A quick way of remembering some top tips: S Shred documents containing personal details before throwing them away. M Make sure passwords are nonsensical. Use letters, numbers and symbols. A Always use legitimate and up-to-date anti virus software. R Remain vigilant. Think before you input or email your personal details. T Think Phishing. Could that email be from a fraudster trying to get hold of your personal details? For further information on staying safe online go to Get Safe Online www.getsafeonline.org and Cyber Streetwise www.cyberstreetwise.com Victims of fraud should report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 20 40 or visiting www. actionfraud.police.uk WATER SAFETY ADVICE DURING THE HOT WEATHER West Mercia Police is offering advice and reminding people of the dangers of swimming in open water. As summer temperatures soar, taking a cooling dip in the water is an obvious temptation, but one that often hides much less obvious dangers to your safety. According to the Royal Life Saving Society, 85% of accidental drowning occurs at open water sites such as lakes, rivers, canals, reservoirs and quarries. Bodies of water may look safe, but can hide dangers such as hidden currents, hazardous objects, pollution and the ever present risk of cold water shock.
Immersion in cold water leads to rapid cooling of the skin, gasping, hyperventilation and the restriction of blood flow. This in turn can lead to panic as muscle strength decreases due to lack of blood flow, causing fatigue and reduced control over body movements. The longer you are in the water, the greater your chance of hypothermia as core body temperature drops to a dangerous level. Be aware of the risks Being a strong swimmer does not mean you will be safe in open water. The dangers include: • Cold water temperatures • Hidden currents • Unseen objects such as rubbish, broken glass or hazardous materials • Unknown water quality - health risks from pollution • Difficult to gauge water depth - you could find yourself in unexpectedly deep water or injure yourself jumping into shallow water Tips for staying safe The best way to stay safe is to ensure you only enter water where there is adequate supervision and rescue cover. Other tips include: • If walking or running near open water, keep away from the water's edge and supervise youngsters at all times • Don't swim near weirs, locks, pipes and sluices • Alcohol and swimming should never be mixed • Get out of the water as soon as you start to feel cold • Wear recommended safety equipment - for example life jackets and helmets if canoeing • Don't jump or dive into open water when you are unsure of the depth and any submerged hazards If you see someone in difficulty tell a Lifeguard if there is one nearby, or dial 999 and ask for the police at inland water sites and the coastguard at the beach.
Cold water shock affects our ability to swim and reach safety if experiencing difficulties. It is a common problem in the UK where water temperatures do not rise significantly throughout the year, and can have severe affects on your body in as little as three minutes. Ledbury Focus

Feeling on Top of the World!
R
otarian Jan Long from Bromsberrow Heath climbed over London’s 02 Arena to raise funds for Rotary charities that supports people around the globe. In completing the climb over the Dome, Jan said: “It was quite a challenge as I overcame two of my worst fears. The first of my anxieties was the issue was using the tube, which resulted from having been stuck underground following a terrorist attack when I used to commute to London for work many years ago. The second is my fear of heights, and since the Dome is 165 feet high, I was just a bit concerned! However having seen the dreadful crippling effects of the poliovirus in India during my recent visit to immunise children against Polio, I wanted to do raise the awareness of this disease and the need to eradicate it. The total amount is likely to be £3000 which is just astonishing and I'm so grateful to everyone who sponsored me! The funds will go towards Rotary charities at home and abroad”. It is not too late to make a donation. Anywone wanting to support Jan and in turn help the local community can contact her through the Ledbury Rotary club. www.ledburyrotaryweb.org photos from the collection of Jan Long

Safari Park in a Flap over First Ever Penguin Chick . . . penguins started to pair up last year and when an egg is laid, couples will share nest duties, taking it in turns to incubate the egg.
W
est Midland Safari Park are celebrating the arrival of a fluffy Humboldt penguin chick, the first to hatch at the Park in its 44 year history. Keepers were excited by the appearance of an egg on 9th March, which hatched five weeks later on 19th April, producing a tiny, cute grey chick.
Penguin Keeper, Vicky McFarlane said, “We are over the moon to welcome our first penguin chick to our colony. Mum, Ripple and Dad, Ebony are doing an amazing job and we can’t believe how fast the chick is growing. We have added extra fish to the parents’ diet, which they swallow and partially digest, then regurgitate straight into the chick’s mouth!
In the wild, Humboldt penguins inhabit the coasts of Peru and Chile and dig burrows into the sand or find small crevices in which to lay eggs. They may also dig burrows into guano cliffs, which are made up of years of accumulated droppings!
“This chick is extra special to us as Humboldt penguins are classified as ‘vulnerable’ in the wild with only 12,000 breeding pairs left. This is due to them being historically hunted for meat and their eggs and more recently, the depletion of fish stocks and harvesting of the birds’ guano nests. We hope our other penguin couples follow Ripple and Ebony’s lead and we can welcome some more chicks this year.”
At the Park, the keepers have provided the penguins with nest boxes and crevices in which to shelter and lay their eggs. The
Keepers are now keeping a close eye on the not-yet-named chick and giving it important daily health checks to make sure it is happy and

healthy. This includes weighing the chick to ensure it is putting on weight. It weighed 180 grammes at just a week old and now, at five weeks old, weighs 2,020 grammes. The penguins first arrived at the Park in 2012 and the colony is made up of 17 adult penguins, which came from zoos in the UK and Germany. The penguins can be seen over May half-term, in West Midland Safari Park’s Discovery Trail, included in the standard admission charge of £23 for adults, £18 for children aged 3-15 and £21 for concessions. Admission includes a voucher for a return visit or safari gift. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra. Over May half-term, the Park has extended its opening hours and is open 9am 6:30pm daily and until 7:30pm on bank holiday Monday. Further information and tickets are available from the Park’s website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. You can find out more on the Safari Park’s official Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ WestMidSafari.

The Rev. John Jackson and the Iron Church
W
hen the Rev. John Jackson (1815-1891) arrived in Ledbury in 1860 as Vicar of St Michael and all Angels, he set about 'modernising' the running of the church.
corrugated iron must have been very cold in winter. Built to boycott the established church, but not licensed for marriages, the first baptism was held there in August 1871.
He proposed to replace the choir, consisting of girls from the local school whose singing he described as execrable, with men and boys wearing white surplices. Dismissing the organist and choir master Thomas Woodward in 1863 he quickly fell out with the established congregation. In particular he upset John Martin of Upper Hall, a wealthy and influential resident of the town and by 1865 the two men were not on speaking terms.
The Rev. Jackson died, still in office, in 1891; an obituary reads, 'his relations with his parishioners were never of the pleasantest order’. The only mourners at his funeral were his wife, her nephew and a few Ledbury stalwarts. The Rev. John Jackson was buried in Malvern Cemetery – not Ledbury as might be expected. Cemetery records show that he was buried with Acomb Jackson aged 18 who had died in 1873; this was his and his wife Margaret's only child. Rev. John Jackson’s name is not on the grave.
To add to the unrest one of Jackson’s servants, Elizabeth Parry, gave birth to a son in 1868, she once interrupted a church service holding the child aloft telling him to ‘look at your Papa’. This prompted an outbreak of graffiti in Ledbury saying ‘Daddy Jackson’. Jackson refused to resign and John Martin appealed to the Bishop of Hereford who referred the matter to the ‘Court of Arches', the highest ecclesiastical court. The Court found Jackson guilty and he was suspended from office for five years but won an appeal on the rather specious argument that the word of a gentleman should be believed over that of a servant girl.
The 'Iron Church' fell into disuse after Jackson's death and was given to the parish in 1892. With the parish church closed for restoration in 1894 and 1895 the Iron Church was used for services and licensed for marriages. It was eventually sold to Nailsworth Parish, Gloucestershire in 1898 for £100. For the complete story see www.ledburyhistory.uk. article by John Chappell
Suggestions of financial irregularity arose in 1871 when Jackson refused to give an account of the charity and church funds he held and the location of the church’s ornate Communion table which he had replaced with a plain one. Against this background John Martin, with a considerable number of Ledbury tradesmen, decided to build an alternative church and chose a site in New Street. At that time, fast growing mobile populations often meant churches were needed quickly and buildings became available in kit form from catalogues. With John Martin as the financial backer a suitable church was purchased at a cost of about £400. Able to seat 250, with an apse and small vestry, the wooden framed building covered in

WINES FROM:
Lebanon website and use of the latest technology, there is much interest at www.chateaumusar.com Massaya, another producer of excellent Lebanese wines, has also collected awards. The sophistication of the Massaya wines, I feel, captures the techniques to produce superb wines, with knowhow and experience being built over many years.
April Two Programme Lebanese brothers have paired the terroir with two French winemaking dynasties and the results are really wonderful.
L
ebanon produces excellent wines, from its location at the eastern end of the Mediterranean The wine making here can be traced back for thousands of years, with vines being cultivated in the Bekaa Valley for over 6000 years. Today, the superb wines from Lebanon can be enjoyed in the UK and worldwide. The Hochar family has been in Lebanon since the 12th century. The winery is situated in an 18th century castle at Ghazir, where the wines can be aged for years. Their vineyards are located in the Bekaa Valley, and, following hand-picking of the grapes, the fruits are transported to Ghazir. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Carignan, Obaideh and Merwah, are some of the varieties used, along with knowledge, skills, dedication and love, to create perfect wines. Ledbury Focus
The award-winning Chateau Musar wines, from the Hochar family, are outstanding. Aged for up to two years, in Nevers Oak, prior to bottling, and being stored in cellars for at least five further years, are more reasons why the Chateau Musar wines are most excellent. I found their reds to be full-bodied, with a really deep ruby-like colour and intense flavours. These suited my palate perfectly and are great with roasted meats and Mediterranean dishes. The rosé and white wines are superb also, being wonderful accompaniments to seafood, etc. The most acceptable Musar Jeune is a more recent introduction and features youthful, vibrant, unoaked productions, still adhering to the Hochar family's philosophy of making natural wines.
I found whites, rosés and classic reds, to be aromatic and flavoursome. The Silver Selection, and the Gold Reserve, using Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre and Syrah grape varieties have superb flavours and, being long on the palate, I would describe as powerful productions. The Massaya winery is situated between the mountains and the Mediterranean and their wines are well-worth locating, when serching for wines from the Bekaa Valley. www.massaya.com These are just two of the wine producers of Lebanon. I look forward to finding more Lebanese productions, in the future.
As always, Enjoy!

veryone, and his or her dog, are warmly invited to Jinney Ring Craft Centre, Hanbury near Droitwich on Sunday 16th July for the sixth “Animals R Magic” Charity Fun Day & Dog Show, held in aid of The Cinnamon Trust and local animal charities. The day is all about animals and raising awareness for local animal charities. Our human visitors are welcome to chat, learn and take part – or simply stroll around the event and enjoy the wonderful setting of Jinney Ring. Admission is £2 for adults and £1 for children. There will also be donkey rides, ferret racing, animal-handling with creepy crawlies and adorable furries, and face painting. Meet our animal guests, including Jasper the pony and Charlie the police search dog, or have your photo taken with “Peeler”, the police mascot who will be patrolling the grounds on the day. Talk to experts in different fields of animal care on the animal charity stands and find out how voluntary organisations are helping all sorts of animals in and around Worcestershire – and please don’t forget bring along any loose change to try your luck on their raffles, competitions and tombolas. Browse the wide selection of trade stands and stock up on animal-themed treats and goodies. Profits from the event’s admission fees and the dog show will be donated to The Cinnamon Trust,
the national charity for elderly and terminally ill people and their pets, to support the work they do in Worcestershire. The Cinnamon Trust offers help such as arranging volunteers to walk the dog of an elderly or ill person who is no longer able to do this, organising for a pet to stay in a foster home while its owner is in hospital, and finding a loving new home for a bereaved pet. If you are interested in helping the charity, know someone who needs their help or would simply like to find out more come and talk to us at our stand at Animals R Magic or see www.cinnamon.org.uk We are very grateful the team at Jinney Ring for hosting this event. While you are here, don’t miss the delicious barbeque, cakes and light refreshments that will be available in the Jinney Ring restaurant and marquee, and please take the chance to have a look around their shop, craft workshops and gallery. Because I'm a man ... ! Because I'm a man, when I lock my keys in the car, I will fiddle with a coat hanger long after hypothermia has set in. Calling the AA is not an option. I will win.

Because I'm a man, when I catch a cold, I need someone to bring me soup and take care of me while I lie in bed and moan. You're a woman. You never get as sick as I do, so for you, this is no problem.

Because I'm a man, I can be relied upon to purchase basic groceries at the store, like beer, milk or bread. I cannot be expected to find exotic items like 'cumin' or 'tofu.' For all I know, these are the same thing. Because I'm a man, when one of our appliances stops working, I will insist on taking it apart, despite evidence that this will just cost me twice as much once the repair person gets here and has to put it back together. 2JW

Because I'm a man, I must hold the television remote control in my hand while I watch TV. If the thing has been misplaced, I may miss a whole show looking for it ... though one time I was able to survive by holding a calculator. Because I'm a man, you don't have to ask me if I liked the movie. Chances are, if you're crying at the end of it, I didn't ... and if you are feeling amorous afterwards ... then I will certainly at least remember the name and recommend it to others. Because I'm a man, I think what you're wearing is fine. I thought what you were wearing five minutes ago was fine, too. Either pair of shoes is fine. With the belt or without it, looks fine. Your hair is fine. You look fine. Can we just go now? Because I'm a man, and this is, after all, the year 2017 I will share equally in the housework. You just do the laundry, the cooking, the cleaning, the vacuuming, and the dishes, and I'll do the rest ... like wandering around the garden with a beer wondering what to do. This has been a public service message for women to better understand men.
