Its July, and the start of the second half of the year ... where did the first half go ... before we know it it will be Christmas again! But before that, there's lots happening, so start browsing to see what we have on offer for you this month. There's the Ledbury Community Choir event (have a look at page 23), then throughout the month, there's the Ledbury Poetry Festival, with several highlights at the Market Theatre. Art for Pleasure and the Ledbury Food Group also have events during July, and of course as always, there's plenty on offer on the Events page. Cinnamon Trust have their annual gettogether at the Jinney Ring in July - do go along and support them ... it is a very worthy cause. July is also the month when most of us take our summer holidays, so if you have a holiday planned for this month, I hope you have a wonderful time, with lots of sun and fun. So until next month, take care, have fun and stay healthy.

ulgaria has a lot of history and is a very interesting country. The capital city is Sofia. Much of the ancient culture of Bulgaria is widely acknowledged and appreciated, as indeed are other attributes, including scenic beauty, architecture, arts and music. Bulgarian cuisine and wines are now increasing in popularity – and deservedly so – with many productions of superb wines gaining prestigious awards at events. The multi award-winning Telish Winery has been producing excellent wines since the 1960’s. I found extremely popular productions, from this winery, chosen by numerous wine lovers. Several ‘international’ varieties are produced, including Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, for example, along with many other splendid wines. Telish Chardonnay is always popular, with fruits enjoyed at the outset on the bouquet and pleasures following through to the mouthfeel and excellent palate. Another wine, which appeals to me, is the Motley Cock White. This is a further production, often selected as a very good pairing for many dishes, including fish, seafoods and white meats, etc. Motley Cock has an excellent structure, with a good freshness and finish. Many red wines, from the
Ledbury Focus
Telish Winery, impress me. Cabernet Sauvignon entices, right from the bouquet. The extremely pleasant mouthfeel has very good flavours of dark fruits. Castra Rubra has a splendid crimson colour and the palate enjoys a full body, with an impressive aftertaste. Dominant is another very popular wine and has a long finish. Nimbus Syrah Premium and Nimbus Pinot Noir Premium wines are also powerful reds. These are selected time-after-time for their exceptional flavours and as really great pairings with numerous dishes, including red meats. Zahir is another powerful red wine. The very attractive aroma leads perfectly to the fruity mouthfeel and palate sensation, with a good, long, finish. The Motley Cock red wine has a good following of devotees. This dark ruby-coloured wine has a fabulous nose and great body. A favourite, for many. These are a selection from the most excellent range of high-quality wines, from the Telish Winery - a company committed to producing impressive wines, for every occasion. www.telish.bg. Money Matters! It is estimated that every year 5.5 billion pounds of state benefits intended for older people goes unclaimed. Could you be missing out?
R
etirement is something that many of us look forward to – more time to relax and do the things we enjoy, more time to spend with family and friends. But along with more free time may come a drop in income. Even if you have a reasonable income from pensions and other investments, it still makes sense to take advantage of any benefits or concessions you may be entitled to and increase your income. If you are 60 or over, you could be entitled to benefits that you haven’t been able to claim before. This additional financial support can help you maintain your independence, improve your standard of living, help with housing costs, care needs or general day to day living expenses. Don’t assume you’re not eligible just because you have some savings or own your home. And even if you’re already claiming some benefits you may be entitled to others - it doesn’t hurt to check. Last year our Information & Advice Team gained more than £1 million in additional income for older people in Herefordshire.
Our Information & Advice Service is free to people aged 50 and over, their families and carer’s. This is a completely confidential service which offers impartial and accurate information and advice. Our Information & Advice Team carry out free benefit checks, they will explain each benefit and entitlement to you, work out what you might eligible to claim for and help you to complete forms. They can also help you resolve consumer issues, and provide impartial information and advice about residential and nursing home fees, paying for care at home, tax, pensions, housing and utilities. We offer drop in and appointment sessions at our offices and also arrange home visits for people who find it difficult to leave the house. If you have concerns about money or paying bills contact our Information & Advice Team before these become a long term worry.

the buckle tie and stake is that the tree stands upright and doesn’t rock in the wind.
Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
Training & SUPPORT
T
raining and supporting plants are two different things.
When staking either a Standard Rose or a specimen tree, the stake should be behind where you view the tree or plant, so that it is not in the main viewpoint. Support it near the top with a tree buckle tie; this has a spacer in it and means that the plant won’t rub against the stake. Often in my career I go into people’s gardens and see a specimen tree that has been tied up loosely with a bamboo cane and twine. The main thing with
16
There are other ways of staking a tree or supporting it, either with an angular post or two posts, either side, with a cross rail. This all depends on the height of the tree. A lot of people ask: when is the best time to do this, and which one do you use? • If the tree is at all likely to rock because of its size, then it needs to be double staked with a cross rail. • If it is something like a standard rose, it just needs the bottom supporting because it has been growing in a pot; a diagonal stake will do. Supporting plants as they grow is key, which means they need to be checked regularly, and the stake will need changing. If you are growing something like a Delphinium, which is an herbaceous plant - this means it dies back during the winter and grows back over the course of a few weeks - then something like a bamboo cane is good. Alternatively there are various garden supports available on the market such as hoops, spirals, mini frames, etc., that support different kinds
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: betty@grapevinepublications.co.uk
of plants. These need to be chosen with the respective plant in mind so that the plant continues to be supported whilst it grows, and to ensure that the it doesn’t outgrow the support so that it then becomes vulnerable to wind damage, and snaps the most important part ‌ the flowers off the top. With all supports, all you are doing is letting the plant continue to grow naturally; you are just helping it to not fall over, bend, snap or get damaged. When training something this is where you are supporting it with a piece of trellis. If it is a rose or a rose arch you are then pruning the plant to create the shape - either a fan shape for a fruit tree or an up-and-over shape for a rose arch. This is not only supporting the plant but also training it to do what you want it to do.
Many people don’t realise that a lot of plants flower better and more prolificly on horizontal growth as there are more points for the shoots to come from. Most plants will shoot on a bend, so by bending a branch down and along means it will have 3 or 4 flower heads or even more than if the plant was allowed to grow straight up. A classic example of this is a Wisteria plant: if you look at a Cotswold house where they are grown because of the nice warm stonework and perfect soil conditions, you will see them flowering along the horizontal growth that runs underneath the windows. Next month I will look at pruning techniques.

he third in the series of exhibitions about Ledbury and the First World War will be held in St Michael & All Angels’ Church this summer. In 2014 Life in Ledbury 1914-1918 covered all aspects of life in the town during the war, as well as showing “C” Company marching off to war on August 4th 1914. Last summer we commemorated the Ledbury connection with Gallipoli and the men who served there with Ledbury and Gallipoli 1915.
The displays this year will look at life here in the town in 1916 – the Cinema House and the Royal Hall, Empire Day in May, the October Fair and how Christmas 1916 was celebrated in the town. The lives of the eleven casualties from 1916 whose names appear on our war memorials will be commemorated. The biographies of those who died during the Battle of the Somme which were displayed on June 25th will be form part of the exhibition, as well as biographies of those who died in other actions.

Treatment for Asthma by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DipM
In this article, I will share some information on Asthma and what happens in the body when people suffer from this. I also detail some information on helping people relieve symptoms of Asthma. What is asthma? Asthma is a common long-term condition that affects an individual’s respiratory function. It is caused by inflammation of small tubes called bronchi that carry air in and out of the lungs. When an individual comes into contact with a substance that irritates the lungs the airways become narrow and the muscles around these tighten. Common Asthma triggers: • House dust • Cigarette or other smoke • Pet / Animal hair • Pollen • Exercise • Viral infections Symptoms of Asthma Symptoms vary from person to person and sometimes the severity of the condition can lead to Asthma attacks, some of these are so severe and result in hospitalisation. Common Asthma symptoms: • Chest tightness • Wheezing • Breathlessness • Coughing 32
How I work with Asthma Out of the therapies I practice, I will often use The Bowen Technique when I am treating people struggling with Asthma. In the technique, we have a really useful procedure called the Respiratory procedure. The Bowen Respiratory Procedure This procedure can assist the body to start working at its optimum in terms of respiratory health at a physiological level. The procedure also helps the body relax and re-balance and people often report improvements with emotional and stress related problems including depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Stress and emotional issues can often be the root cause of respiratoryrelated symptoms. I have found this Bowen procedure to be invaluable when treating respiratory problems for an individual from a physiological perspective and also in addressing stress or emotional imbalance that might be causing other physical problems.
The procedure is done in two parts: 1. The first part of the procedure is applied to the patients back on the thoracic area over the erector spinae muscles on both sides of the body. Whilst doing this we bend the leg slightly which helps to lock the thoracic vertebrae and gives a release in the respiratory cavity. Often people experience an immediate sense of expansion and feel as though they can breathe more freely after performing this. 2. The second part of this procedure is applied to the front of the body. One finger is placed on the epigastrium while gentle moves are made on either side of the body on the rectus abdominis on the rib cage. Often whilst these “moves” are being applied the digestive system also starts to wake up and make noises! This procedure is also used when a client is suffering from digestive problems.

Self-help tips to help with Asthma Nutritional deficiencies: A mineral that I would recommend to everyone including Asthma suffers is Magnesium. It is responsible for a huge amount of functions within the body and is generally deficient in most people. According to Dr Carolyn Dean, most people with Asthma are deficient in magnesium and Asthma medication deplete the body of this mineral even further. Dr Dean reported a marked improvement in Asthma symptoms in patients taking simple magnesium supplements. Bowen Respiratory move: The Bowen respiratory move has been used to effectively stop an Asthma attack from developing. On a training course, my tutor told us about a woman who was a teacher training in Bowen and who had told him that many kids in her class required inhalers for their Asthma. After being taught this “move” in a Bowen training course the teacher (with parental consent) showed the children how to perform this on themselves. As a result, their need to use inhalers significantly diminished! Technique: • With an index finger locate your lower breast bone on the midline. • Move your finger down about ½ -1 inch (this will depend on your size) • Inhale • On the exhale very gently move your finger and the skin Ledbury Focus
underneath your finger up and down It is such a simple technique and when you get the hang of it can be done easily and quickly and through clothing. This simple technique can also alleviate heartburn. In fact, I showed this to a friend who relied heavily on heartburn medication to deal with her chronic heartburn and she has never needed to take one since! For more techniques like this please check out my Wellness Workshop on my website. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) In TCM, the Large Intestine and Lung meridians are coupled or connected. Often the symptoms that present when we look to treat with the respiratory / digestive procedure are interrelated and impact upon both Large Intestine and Lung function. We see the parallel of TCM reflected in the Bowen Digestive / Respiratory procedure as this one procedure impacts on these two areas of health. Reminder about Hay fever We are still in allergy season so if you are suffering and would like a treatment that can help you please get in touch. Using the therapies, I practice I can effectively treat hay fever and allergic problems in most people. Here’s a comment from a happy client: “I am so pleased that I am not reacting to the pollen as badly this year it’s such a relief – thank you!” Sarah, Ledbury

Those Little Brown Birds Again A
fter such a quiet winter it was lovely to have some exciting bird sightings in the spring and early summer. Three cuckoos in the garden at once was a wow moment. Over the past 20 years we have lost over half our cuckoos so it's a thrill to see one, let alone three. Now, of course they are making their way south, back to Africa and may already have arrived there. Such a brief stay with us, and yet the cuckoo is the bird we all listen out for as the harbinger of spring. By the end of May I still had siskins coming to the feeders which made me wonder if they were going to breed here this year. So often though, seeing wildlife is as much a matter of chance than of a planned hour or more of looking. It was by chance then, I spotted a goldcrest in my tatty old greengage. Goldcrests are the smallest British bird, yes, there is a bird smaller than a wren, and they can be very difficult to catch sight of as they flit amongst the foliage of a tree. It’s not the first time I’ve seen these pretty, dainty birds on the Hills, but only the second sighting in the garden. 38
Warblers are notoriously hard to see and identify, but I find another little brown bird equally difficult. I’ve seen them on the Hills for years and love their joyful parascending song flight that always seems to me to be the epitome of summer, like hearing a skylark high above a meadow. However, I’ve never been quite sure whether I’m looking at a meadow pipit or a tree pipit. The meadow pipit is far more common than the tree pipit, so I expect that it’s the one that soars above me singing its heart out as it parascends down. It would help if the birds stayed still long enough for me to get a proper view, or if they weren’t high above me. I know, I should carry binoculars, but with my camera as well I tend not to. So this summer I was thrilled that I managed to get a photograph of this nondescript little bird. Yet even now, comparing it with the BTO illustration on the website, the only thing I’m sure of is that it’s a pipit. But whichever pipit it is, its still a joy to see and hear such a seemingly happy little bird. photo and article by Geraldine Holbourn

Ledbury Community Day T
he annual Ledbury Community Day attracted record numbers of visitors despite the threatened rain which could easily have dampened spirits. The venues in and around the Town Centre were filled with stands and displays from many different organisations and groups showcasing their activities.
Amongst the visitors was Pat Morgan, cabinet member for Herefordshire, who visit the Ledbury Refugee support stand and was able to answer FAQs and dispel the myths. Ledbury's newly appointed Mayor, Debbie Baker and her entourage spent many hours greeting stall holders, and she took time to sign the book in the Burgage Hall which had been specially set up to wish Her Majesty, a Very Happy Birthday. Ledbury's Brass Band entertained onlookers, and the public services of the police and fire services were much in evidence, as was Bill the Bell Turberfield, the Town's colourful Town Cryer. Debbie said: "It was wonderful to walk around Ledbury and visit the different venues, and to be able to see all the good things that are available in Ledbury and surrounding areas. So many charities, groups, advice stalls, and it was marvellous to see all the volunteers that represented their particular group/charity. In Ledbury we hear lots of negativity, but the Community Day really does show what is best about Ledbury. I want to thank all the lovely volunteers that go about their business helping out, who to me are the unsung heroes of Ledbury. Without these people, Ledbury wouldn't be half the place it is." Organiser Griff Holliday and his team were pleased with the success of the event, and agreed that Ledbury Community Day was yet another triumph for the town. Article and photographs by Jan Long

Vision - A warm heart for a great school Introduction The Chase School in Malvern is a large and vibrant secondary school situated under the impressive backdrop of the Malvern Hills. The happiness and wellbeing of its students is the school’s greatest priority and when the opportunity to redevelop a courtyard at the heart of the school presented itself, the school seized the opportunity for a new and innovative approach to redesigning the space. ‘I am very proud to have designed something that could be built at school … we don’t often get opportunities like this.’ Student engagement In partnership with a landscape architect the school threw down the design gauntlet directly to those that will benefit from the space the most … the students themselves! Students from years 7 to 13 at The Chase volunteered for an after school club under the lead of Glesni Speake, Head of Design and Technology, and the landscape experts. The club has been meeting weekly since January on the design brief for renovating the space into a ‘warm heart for the school’.
Starting with site assessment, needs analysis, surveying and measuring they applied maths, science and practical skills to work out constraints and opportunities. They developed an understanding of
Learning though landscape architecture The students organised themselves into five project teams and gave themselves a company name. They worked through the landscape design process with the support of Felicity Robinson, a landscape architect who specialises in supporting school grounds design projects. Her specific expertise involves engaging students of all ages in the full design process from inception to completion, ‘I didn’t realise this was a job!’ said one of the students at the end of the project. 42

‘Please, help us to bring this project to life!’ Fundraising The school has so far managed to raise half of the £30,000 required and between May and July 2016 will be actively seeking sponsorship from businesses and donations from parents and members of the community to help turn their dreams into a reality.
‘I feel excited and nervous at the same time that our ideas may be used ‘for real’. the site and annotated a scale plan with the key details. Model making workshops followed, where ideas were developed in 3D, along with perspective drawings to test out further ideas. Materials and planting were thought about too, with hands-on workshops looking at possible surfacing, textures, colours and seasonal changes.
Donations can be made online, so if you or your business can help in any way, please visit the school’s website www.chase.sch.uk where you will find a link to the project, or contact Vicky Watson, Business Manager at the school (01684 891961 office@chase.worcs.sch.uk) All donations are most gratefully received and as an extra thank you for donations over £20, your name will be displayed on a leaf or heart on our ‘tree of thanks’. Business and individual key sponsors will be displayed on our sponsors plaque, advertised as much as possible through school media, dependent on value pledged, and will be invited to our opening celebration event.
Skills for life The teams presented their ideas to senior leaders and a visiting contractor Paul Clark from HFN. This was described as ‘scary’ by the students, but they rose magnificently to the occasion! Headteacher, Richard Jacobs commended the students for their hard work and imaginative designs. ‘Appreciating and utilising concepts from our students’ point of view is key to us creating an inspiring and nurturing outdoor learning environment at the very heart of our school.’ Rills, talent display, performance and sparkly lights The ideas developed by the students are imaginative and practical so key points from all five teams have informed and enriched the final scheme for the Quad, designed by Felicity. A representation of the Malvern Hills forms a shaped ‘fedge’ to screen air conditioning units and other services. Water is incorporated through the inclusion of rain ‘rills’ in paving that add an ephemeral artistic touch. The Quad will also provide nurturing space for private conversations in a calm environment. Student talent, artworks display and performance in an amphitheatre/stage are part of the vision for a space that will also be used for ‘breakout’ sessions and community events. Ledbury Focus

OUR SPECIES of the month:
The Marbled White Butterfly
T
he marbled white is a beautifully marked butterfly which is unmistakeable with its black and white mottled colouring.
This year, the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust is running a new series taking a closer look at one key species of flora or fauna each month. For July, we are looking at the marbled white butterfly or Melanargia galathea . . .
48
Within the UK, it’s mostly found in central-southern England, including parts of Herefordshire, and is almost entirely absent further north than Lancashire and Yorkshire, although it’s believed that global warming might result in the marbled white colonising sites further north. The butterflies typically form large, discrete colonies and can be seen from June to August. On a good site, in warm, sunny weather, thousands can be seen gently fluttering amongst the
grass heads. Their eggs are laid on the wing or from brief perches on grass stems, and are just sprinkled down towards the ground. Upon hatching, the lime green larvae immediately enter hibernation, and only begin to feed the following spring when the fresh growth occurs. Red fescue grass is especially important to the caterpillars, as it’s thought to be their main dietary source. Where to see them Marbled whites are typically found on unimproved grassland (meaning that which has had no fertiliser added to it), where the grass has been able to grow up to half a metre tall but even small strips of grassland, such as road

verges, field margins, woodland clearings and disused railway lines can be home to smaller colonies. Look out for them around purple flowers such as knapweed, thistles, scabious and marjoram as these are their preferred flowers! By far the largest concentration of marbled whites in the West Midlands is in Worcestershire, although it’s spreading further north and west. Good places to see them locally include the Malvern Hills, the Doward, Ewyas Harold Common, Coppett Hill and Haugh Wood. How to help marbled whites to thrive The tiny number of wildflower meadows in the country – 97% of them have been lost since the 1940s – means that protecting those that remain, and creating new ones, is the best way to help the marbled white. Even a small area of wildflowers grown in your garden or local green space will help. A wealth of information on pollinators in general, including more about how to help them, can be found at www.herefordshirewt.org/ pollinators. Get in touch If you spot a marbled white – or any other species please do let us know! You can submit records online at www.herefordshirewt.org, email them to us at records@herefordshirewt.co.uk or write to us at Lower House Farm, Ledbury Road, Hereford, HR1 1UT. Ledbury Focus

Much to enjoy at this year’s Ledbury Celebration T
he Ledbury Celebration of local food and drink, music and poetry, which takes place on the last Sunday of the Ledbury Poetry Festival, has rapidly become a fixture in the local food and drink calendar. This year it takes place in Ledbury on Sunday 10th July. The day provides a special opportunity for local and artisan food and drink producers to bring their produce to Ledbury. You can purchase a wide range of local food and drink to enjoy straight away or to take home, while listening to live music and poetry and soaking up the celebratory atmosphere. This year to compliment the local food and drink, the Poetry Festival has organised a full programme of music and poetry. Running from 12 noon to 6pm it features poets “irreverent and funny” Clare Bold, “devastatingly effective” Nico Reznick, “rising star” Steve Pottinger, and “wonderfully bizarre” Rob Barratt. Dan James, Fiddlers Two, Short Stuff, and A Month of Sundays provide the musical entertainment. A special treat last year, Clapper Box will once again entertain with their fascinating mobile puppet theatre. Local beers and ciders will be available to enjoy on site, together with a great range of local foods from freshly picked fruit through Polish pierogis, wraps, scotch eggs, cheese, preserves, to the best in local ice cream. Griff Holliday, Secretary of Ledbury Food Group, which organises the event in conjunction with Ledbury Poetry Festival, says the Ledbury Celebration brings out all that is best about Ledbury – “it’s a special day for the town and visitors from elsewhere to enjoy”. Phillippa Slinger of Ledbury Poetry Festival says “It’s a wonderful opportunity to bring families and the community together and celebrate everything good in the locality. Last year we had a crowd pleasing array of poets and musicians providing hilarious and uplifting entertainment, and we are looking forward to a fabulous line-up for 2016, our 20th anniversary celebratory year.”
For anyone interested in local food and drink or music and poetry, make sure Sunday 10 July is in your diary! 52

I
t was another happy and special day for all those who participated in a sun-filled event at Cattle Country in Gloucestershire for the annual "Kids Out" programme arranged by Rotary clubs around the region including the Ledbury Club. Children enjoyed feeding lambs, seeing piglets play, and after a visit to the Willow maze, enjoyed the trampolines, zip wire, bouncy pillows and a whole range of activities. Packed lunches were eaten and ice creams devoured! Thank you to everyone who participated, teachers, guardians, all the schools and wonderful youngsters, and never to be forgotten team of “ inner wheelers” who triumphed over arrangements for 600 packed lunches!
This annual Rotary event has everyone joining in at all levels and it is heart-warming to see the joy on the faces of those in our care. Well done everyone! Nationwide events are held at a variety of exciting venues for children to visit and forms part of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland serving the community. The Most Thorough Carp
M
ay 16th 2016 saw the 40th Anniversary of a Mount Everest climb by two SAS soldiers on 16th May 1976. They were “Bronco” Lane and “Brummie” Stokes , who sadly died in January this year. Together they became the fourth and fifth Britains to successfully make the climb, and fifty-fourth and fifty-fifth in the world. With the help of a support team, Camp 6 was established on 14th May 1976 and the summit bid was planned for the next day, but during the night an unexpected and very severe storm developed. This only abated during the afternoon of 15th - therefore the summit bid was made on 16th. Although the 16th started fine the weather soon deteriorated again, making climbing conditions more difficult and progress very slow. They reached the summit at 15.15 hours. During the descent, through “white out” conditions, they were forced to bivouac, with no protection, on
58
an exposed and dangerous knife edge ridge above the “South Col”. Gone was the elation of the climb ... only survival mattered. They passed the night at extreme altitude, about 28,000 ft, in intense cold, about -40F. To keep warm they rubbed each other's bodies, each keeping a constant check to ensure that the other did not fall asleep as, if they did, it would have been their last. Although exhausted, frost bitten and barely alive, they continued down and were met by a rescue party - John Scott and Pat Gunson (both deceased). As a result of the frost bite Bronco and Brummie lost all their toes, and Bronco lost five finger tips whilst connecting up to a life-saving oxygen supply. Bronco’s toes and finger tips have been donated to the National Army Museum together with an ice axe. The toes were not in
good enough condition to be kept but the finger tips are preserved in formaldehyde. Bronco became a Major, joining the SAS in 1967 and leaving in 2000. He was awarded a B.E.M for the Everest Climb and the Military Medal (now the Military Cross) for valour in another campaign. He continued climbing for some years, including more trips to Everest, and made several Antarctic expeditions. As with most SAS soldiers, Bronco continues to be active, with cycling, walking, gardening (normally involving food) and travelling being amongst his interests. In October this year, most of the original team are getting together to celebrate the climb at the Three Counties Hotel in Hereford.

Please also be aware of your animal’s fitness and weight as this is very important factor in their health and welfare. This is true of all species and is quite a major problem. It is estimated that about 30% of animals are obese. Obesity is a major health problem as it can predispose to numerous conditions, please be aware that obesity may not always be just associated with overeating and it is wise to have your overweight pet checked just in case there is a medical problem. Our nurses do free weight clinics and can formulate a suitable diet for your pet.

White Chocolate & Raspberry Crème Brûlée Who doesn't love a Crème Brûlée, silky custard and a sharp snap of burnt sugar on top? Add white chocolate and fresh raspberries to that mix and you have a surefire winner of a brulee recipe, but be warned, it is seriously addictive!
METHOD y• y
Put the eggs, chocolate and sugar into a large heatproof bowl.
y• y
Heat the cream and milk in a saucepan until just boiling, then slowly pour over egg mix and whisk over a saucepan of barely simmering water until thick, making sure the bowl is not touching the water.
y• y
Place in the fridge to cool completely. Divide ¾ of the fresh raspberries between 6 individual ramekins (3"x 2" deep) and spoon the brûlée mix over; smooth over with a palette knife.
y• y
When ready to serve evenly sprinkle the surface of the brûlée with a thin layer of caster sugar and blow torch, or place under a hot grill until golden brown. Repeat until you have a thick, golden and hard surface.
y• y
Decorate with the remaining raspberries and a sprig of mint.
INGREDIENTS 200g white chocolate 5 large egg yolks 75g caster sugar 350ml double cream 125ml milk 250g fresh raspberries

Doorstep Crime! Rogue Traders We have seen an increase in cold callers to properties in Herefordshire over the last month and they have been ranging from selling generators, selling mattresses to having ‘spare’ tarmac/hardcore. For this reason I have included another article with hopefully helpful advice about traders turning up at your door and what to do. Dealing with rogue traders Rogue traders are opportunists who call on people's doors to rip them off. They make repairs that don't need doing and may talk people into buying products that they don't want. Be on your guard, watch out for them, you can keep your door closed to protect yourself from their scams, fraudulent activities and offers that are quite literally – too good to be true. Who are they? Rogue Traders usually cold call under the guise of being either salespeople or trades people who offer cut price home improvement services or other products. They are always charming and very believable. They can also be very difficult to get rid of if they get through your door even if you ask them to leave. Such traders will charge a small fortune for poor quality work, unnecessary repairs or cheap goods such as double glazing or energy efficiency products. What tricks do they use? They sometimes offer to tarmac your drive, work on your garden, repair your roof or clean your gutters for a low price. They may say that your 66
house needs urgent repairs. They may say they are only in the area for a short time. They may say that they have done work for your neighbour. They may also offer you unbelievable discounts. They may then demand large amounts of cash, claiming that the job has turned out to be bigger than they thought. Some ask for cash up front and are never seen again. Others may insist on driving people to their bank to pressure them into withdrawing their savings. Whatever they say - don't believe them. What should you do to prevent doorstep crime? Remember the Three Step Plan. You have the right to keep your door closed and tell them to go away. If you are suspicious of a cold caller, you can report them to 101 and give a description of them and any vehicle you may have seen them use. If they are selling goods or services and don't leave or return after you've asked them to leave, they are breaking the law - and can be prosecuted for ignoring your request. Top tips: • Install an intercom or spy hole for extra security. • Never agree to have work done or part with money on your doorstep. • Always get written quotes from at least two traders for any work. • You have 14 days to cancel any purchase of goods or services over £42 that you make in your home.
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: betty@grapevinepublications.co.uk
• If you agree a contract for goods or services in your house, you must be given the following information in a durable medium, otherwise a criminal offence may have been committed: • the conditions, time limits & procedure for exercising the right to cancel • the cost of returning the goods • if you request the contract to start within the cancellation period, the trader must inform you of any reasonable costs to be paid up until the time of cancellation. • Always agree the price, payment arrangements and start/finish dates in writing before any work starts on your home. • You don't have to pay in full until you're completely satisfied with the work and you could consider using stage payments throughout the work. • Keep your home and belongings safe during works. • If you think you've been deceived, are concerned about a trader or have any doubts call 101 or trading standards at Herefordshire Council 01432 260000
Over the past few months we have received a number of calls from residents who have left voicemail messages with us. In order for us to provide the best service we can, we need to get your reports via the appropriate channels so we can act accordingly. Voicemails are not checked on a regular basis and should not be used to report crime. 101 should be used in non-emergencies and all other enquires, including advice on police matters and to report crimes which have already happened, where there is no sign of an offender. 101 is an easy-to-remember number for the public to call the police, designed to reduce the number of non-emergency 999 calls. An operator is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to deal with your enquiry Having these two different numbers means that we can respond more quickly to genuine emergencies, such as when someone is in immediate danger, a crime is happening right now, or a suspect for a serious crime is nearby. A call to 101 costs just 15 pence no matter how long your call is. Not only is this cheaper than some forces' local numbers, the single rate for every call means you know exactly how much your call will cost. Did you know you can report a crime to us online? We now have a simple form you can fill out online, rather than calling 101. If you need to report a crime, try it here:
Need to Report a crime to us? Not an emergency? Please call 101
https://www.westmercia.police.uk/ article/2366/Report-a-crime
We would like to issue a reminder to our communities that the best way to reach us is via 101 in non-emergency situations. Remember in an emergency dial 999. Ledbury Focus

Busy Bees @ LPS B
Where Learning is Fun
usy Bees @ LPS are a childcare provision and registered charity based in the grounds of Ledbury Primary School although run independently. The setting offers Preschool sessions for children aged 2-4 years and a Breakfast and After School Club for children aged 3-11 years. Busy Bees have been rated as ‘Outstanding’ in all areas by Ofsted following their recent inspection in April. The inspector recognised that ‘children flourish in this exceptional pre-school’ and that ‘both the indoor and outdoor environments are inviting and highly stimulating’. The setting offers a safe, stimulating environment where children’s interests are valued and used to provide a basis for
72
extending their learning. From September, the fully qualified team will be led by a qualified Early Years Teacher as Emma, the Manager, will have completed her Early Years Initial Teacher Training through the University of Worcester. The team strive to provide the best opportunities for children and are proud that the standards of teaching and learning have been recognised as being 'highly effective' by Ofsted and that 'all children, including those in receipt of funding, make remarkable progress in relation to their starting points'. Children attending Busy Bees have many opportunities to learn and develop with experiences away from the setting valued as much as those within. A recent visit to Tesco to

participate in their ‘Farm to Fork’ initiative encouraged children to think about where their food comes from, how it is stored and prompted them to try new foods. Children regularly have the opportunity to go for walks in the community, visit the park, library and local shops. An egg hatching experience in May was embraced by children and parents alike, with everyone delighting in watching the eggs in the incubator begin to crack before the chicks made their way into the world. Special activities planned before the Summer holidays include exploring the lifecycle of butterflies as children will be observing caterpillars transform into chrysalis before emerging as butterflies. Busy Bees are also looking forward to a visit from Sea Legs Puppet Theatre in July. Outdoor play is important at Busy Bees and therefore, children are able to play outside throughout the session should they wish. As well as the garden at the front of Busy Bees, children have access to a marvellous wooded Forest School area at the rear. This is used for den building, bug

hunting, bark rubbing, hide and seek and lots, lots more. A particularly popular resource in this area is the new Mud Kitchen! Once children are in their final year before school, they join the Butterfly group, taking part in more structured adult led activities in preparation for Reception. Busy Bees offer weekly PE sessions, Forest School and a Gardening Club as well as daily phonics sessions. The team at Busy Bees are already looking forward to the beginning of the Autumn term and the wealth of opportunities the children have waiting for them, indoors and outdoors. If you would like your child to join in the Autumn term for Preschool or Extended Services, please contact Busy Bees to enquire about availability. They are also able to offer wrap around care with LPS Nursery who they work closely with. If you would like to book sessions, please telephone 01531 248087 or 07584 514 147. Our Ledbury Garden H
i everyone, and welcome to the update on the Ledbury garden. A lot of progress has been made recently including the wooden shapes that are now on the wall. Since summer is now officially here, all the flowers are blooming and flowering like crazy! We have also planted sunflowers, primrose, buddleja, chives and a dog rose under the tree. Litter in the area has also been reduced after starting this project, we think it is because we litter pick a lot and that gives a positive impact. And the public have seen what a beautiful place it is without litter. We are also very near the point of putting in homes for bees. Also, look out for a fairy door, for that will be appearing! Hope that you will visit the garden soon and have a look! Thanks for reading. By Laurie age 10

U3A visits Kelmscott Manor
K
elmscott Manor in Oxfordshire, was the country home of the writer, designer and socialist William Morris from 1871 until his death in 1896.
After lunch at the café, came an exploration of the gardens and a walk to the banks of the Thames close by. Some ventured a little further to the village and parish church.
Today it is owned by the Society of Antiquities of London, and is open to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the summer.
The journey home was a ‘mystery’ tour, which included the Cotswold Discovery Centre located at the Old Prison in Northleach. There was a fantastic display of old farm equipment followed by afternoon tea in the café, with a subsequent stop at the M5 Gloucester service station. - quite unlike any other service station, with very extensive shopping facilities, where gifts could be purchased.
On Thursday 5th May, a group of nearly 50 members of the U3A took advantage of the opportunity to visit this delightful abode. It was a beautiful warm spring day, such a change after so much recent cold and rain. After an introductory talk in a barn, refreshments were had outside under blossom-laden trees, followed by a tour of the house with helpful guides provided in the rooms which were filled with a variety of furniture, tapestries and embroideries, all worked by the Morris family.
78
A lovely day out was had by all, with everyone in high spirits. Thanks are due to o Wendy (U3A past Chair) and Georgina (current Chair). Definitely a visit to be recommended article by Jayne Wright

And that's how the fight started ... ! One year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift. The next year, I didn’t buy her a gift. When she asked me why, I replied, "Well, you still haven’t used the gift I bought you last year!" And that’s how the fight started ... ! ******* I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. "I’ll have the rump steak, rare, please." He said, "Aren’t you worried about the mad cow?" "Nah, she can order for herself." And that’s how the fight started ... ! ******* My wife sat down next to me as I was flipping channels. She asked, "What’s on TV?" I said, "Dust." And that’s how the fight started ... ! ******* My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said, "I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 165 in about 2 seconds." I bought her a bathroom scale. And that’s how the fight started ... !

******* My wife was standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror. She was not happy with what she saw and said to me, "I feel horrible. I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment.” I replied, "Your eyesight’s damn near perfect." And that’s how the fight started ... ! ******* When our lawn mower broke and wouldn’t run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat, making beer ... always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. I arrived home one day to find her sitting in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway." … the doctors say I will walk again one day, but I will always have a limp!
