Well here we are, it's officially the start of summer, although looking at the clouds outside, someone forgot to tell the weather! Oh well, it wouldn't be a proper British summer without the rain! On to this month's magazine. As always we've got a bumper issue, with several new advertisers and plenty to read during those long summer evenings. Whilst on the subject of reading, I would like to thank all those hard-working people who who keep us supplied with a steady stream of articles - without them the Ledbury Focus wouldn't be nearly so interesting. I'd also like to thank those of you who send me details of your events - please keep them coming, and if anyone else has an event or function they would like to tell the people of Ledbury about, then please email me the details. As you browse through the magazine, look out for the various upcoming events, such as Woodside Country Park's Open Day, Ledbury Community Day and Hellens' Garden Festival, as well as those on the Events in June page. And that's it for this month. Until next time, keep happy and healthy.

OPEN DAY 26th June 2016 from 2pm to 5pm

W

oodside Lodges Country Park originally started life as a small touring caravan park in 1969 and is situated a short distance from the market town of Ledbury. Over the years, this has developed into an award winning Country Park of approximately 28 acres, in an attractive setting with wide ranging views. The careful planting of over 500 native trees and many hundreds of wild flowers have enhanced the natural beauty of the site, resulting in gaining a David Bellamy gold award for conservation every year since 2005. Over the years the owners, Ken and Janet Davies and family, have taken particular care to develop the business to cater for the growing importance of tourism to the local rural economy and at the same time conserve the countryside. During the history of the business 2 significant events have taken place. Firstly in 1991, after a long battle with planners, 5 Scandinavian luxury lodges specially imported from Finland were built: some of the earliest true timber lodges to be built in England. An opening ceremony was held in June 1991 and this is to be celebrated by holding an open day 25 years later, on June 26th this year. The second significant event in the history of the park was the purchase of a neighbouring small holding in 2005, which enabled the business to expand and add extra facilities, including fishing, wild swimming and additional camping pitches. The park now provides a wide choice of accommodation to suit all budgets, in a peaceful rural setting namely: •

Luxury Scandinavian lodges for those who relish the comforts in life;

Camping pods;

Bunkhouse/hostel accommodation;

Camping facilities.

Facilities available to guests staying on site include fishing and the many walks in the area, which includes the adjacent Long Distant Herefordshire Trail. The central location in the country has also meant the park has seen a growing demand for facilities to celebrate family and friends’ reunion events and we are 8

increasingly being used as additional guest accommodation as local people find that space is limited in their own homes for visiting friends and family. The day to day running of the park is now in the capable hands of a small team, which includes the next generation of the family but is headed by John and Angela Baker, who originally came as visitors a decade ago and decided to stay. Effective Treatment for Stress

Effect

by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DipM

In this article I will share some information on stress and why the body responds the way it does when faced with stressful situations. I will also share some useful tools and techniques that can help with stress.

Overview Stress is at an all-time high in the UK, with more and more people being signed off work with symptoms of stress, and more people reporting illness connected to stress. The ever increasing demands on our time and resources all play a big part in contributing to our increasing stress levels.

this stress response is happening much more regularly. We are now in a situation where our bodies are flooded with stress hormones on a regular basis which causes all sorts of problems.

by Hele

• Dizziness / light headedness • Communication problems How I work with stress I often use a combination of the therapies that I work with in practice in order to treat stress and its symptoms. Often I will use the Bowen Technique and specific procedures that are very effective in helping the body recover from stressful experiences.

In this article I will Symptoms of stressshare some information on We all respond differently to so symptoms differ fromwhen faced with stress responds thestress way it does person to person, symptoms will be different when stress has some usefulalso tools and techniques that can help What is stress? been present for much longer. The stress response is the body’s way of responding to a threat when we feel threatened our nervous system responds to this by flooding our bodies with stress hormones including adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones get the body revved up to take flight or to stay and fight. This response is a primitive one hard-wired into us. It was necessary for our survival when we were presented with life threatening situations like predators! Unfortunately, for our health the same response is firing up when we are faced with things that are not life threatening and

78 14

Some common symptoms may include: • Dry mouth • Increased heart rate / palpitations • Feelings of dread /doom • Crying spells • Digestive problems • Impaired immune system • Anxiety • Depression • Breathing difficulties • Changes in eating patterns • Changes in behaviour • Feeling overwhelmed / overloaded

Often the trauma of a stressful event is locked into the body at a cellular level. Bowen seems to work well to release these memories and patterns that can be causing problems, sometimes even years after the event. I may also offer advice and test clients for specific remedies and nutritional supplements that could help with the symptoms that they are experiencing.

Self-help tips to help with stress Useful remedies My go-to remedies for stress and calming the nervous system include:

for deficiencies and recommend the supplements they can use in order to help. De-stress (af/fe) points The de-stress points are located on the forehead and the middle of the head. When these points are held, the stress response is diluted. These points are physiologically wired into our stress and fear response and when held help reduce stress, anxiety and fear.

tive Treatment for Stress • Rescue remedy / 5 flower remedy This is a great remedy to have in your medicine cupboard or handbag. It is a combination of 5 of the Bach flower remedies and really does help to calm the nervous system. Use when you are feeling like you need some extra support or after a difficult situation.

Technique: • The first points are located on the forehead about a thumb width from the hair line on most people you will feel a bump on either side of your forehead. The second point is located on the midline of your head on your crown.

en Mawson, BSc Hons, DipM • Mimulus. A Bach flower remedy used to treat fears, particularly fears of known things. This remedy is useful for things like upcoming exams, driving tests, meetings or any event that you fear. • Argent Nit. A homeopathic remedy that is used to treat apprehension and anxiety especially regarding an approaching event.

• If you are finding it difficult to locate these points, simply put your head in your hands by placing your palms on the forehead and hold your head.

It is Nutritional deficiencies Sometimes when we are deficient in certain vitamins and minerals the symptoms of stress can be exacerbated. A mineral that is often deficient and that can be used to very good effect in treating symptoms of stress is Magnesium. This mineral is required by around 800 enzyme systems that promote thousands of biochemical reactions in the body. Stress seriously depletes magnesium levels so it really is essential in treating this problem. In practice, I often test clients using Kinesiology muscle testing

We do not pay estate agents commission for referrals and we are not part of a ‘law factory group’ where you are dealing with a different person each time you call and dealing with someone who only has access to your details on a screen. Realistic support to help you achieve your life’s goals and improve your emotional well-being. I can help you with;

eing the parent of an adolescent these days seems to be such an emotional and physical challenge. Gone are the days when children’s formative years were innocent and trouble free. Modern life offers huge challenges for both adolescents and parents alike. I regularly see more and more family members of all ages who have varying levels of low self-esteem and confidence.

* Low self-esteem

So I’m sure you can remember a time when you asked “what is wrong” and got the usual shoulder shrug and non-committal grunt.

* Relationship Issues

The reasons for this can be:

*

Adolescent and child support

* Setting and Achieving your Goals * Over coming Addictions * Improving your power of Communication * NRB Checked

* Full Liability Insured * Qualified Child and Adolescent Counsellor * NLP Practitioner * Qualified Life Coach For more information please contact me in strictest confidence or visit my website.

• little or no family history of open communication • they think you want to know everything that’s going on • concerned that you think they are crazy • they are convinced you don’t take them seriously • that you won’t listen • that you are old, so how could you possibly understand Of course all parents try, with some degree of success, to solve the issues but they can be too close to allow teenagers to fully open up and pour out their hearts. That’s where I come in. The top 5 most common teenager’s concerns are: 1. friends and social acceptance

I

‘All in an April Evening, April airs were abroad’

t had been a busy day, so my daily walk was postponed until early evening. The April airs were cool, it felt more wintery than spring. April is a fickle month. I met no lambs on the road, but they were not far away. In the fields below I could hear their plaintiff cries; they’d wandered too far from their dam’s. Frontal clouds scudded across the sky on a brisk northerly wind, casting shadows and golden light across the rain washed landscape. My walk took me to quieter parts of the Hills and finding myself surrounded by all the spring flowers blooming simultaneously, I paused to take in their fragrance, the scenery and to listen. From the hawthorn thickets, chiffchaffs were merrily ‘chiffchaffing’ away, and in the distance the mellow call of the cuckoo. A russet and blue flash from the dead bracken confirmed the redstarts were back too; birds that give tropical colour to the English countryside. I was the intruder here. An outsider looking in on a world where these tiny, courageous birds respond to natural laws which drive them to make two epic journeys a year, Despite the Arctic winds, the migrant birds were a sure sign that summer was on the way. It’s a worry though, when they arrive, after flying thousands of

28

miles, and find the weather so cold. I wondered if there would be enough insects for them. It’s been a topsy turvy year so far. No frosts or snow all winter, both in spring. As you know, I saw no red polls during the winter and likewise siskins. The redpolls came and went in March. The siskins turned up in April, flying back to their breeding grounds and stopping off at my fast food outlet. I’d love to know where they eventually end up, but unlike the intrepid Sacha Dent from Slimbridge, who will be following the Bewick swans in a paramotor, (a paraglider with an engine) I’m not intending to take flight and follow them. Their destination will remain in my imagination. Will it be a blazing June? Writing this in April, watching the snowflakes drifting past the window, its hard to imagine summer will come at all. Yet the spring flowers will fade, replaced by those of summer. By the time you read this, the chiffchaffs, the redstarts, siskins and redpolls will be busy rearing the next generation. And the cuckoo? That’s another story, but somewhere on the Hills, there will be pairs of small birds feeding an insatiable monster in their nests. Photo and article by Geraldine Holbourn

A MESSAGE FROM Police Inspector Bob Barnett

Y

our local Police have received a number of calls about 'cold calling' in the last month.

Cold calling is when someone calls at your house or business in person or on the phone, and tries to sell you something. You DO NOT have to buy anything off them - you are perfectly within your rights to ask them to leave or hang up the phone. If you do consider buying then by law they have to give you a period to 'cool off ' before finalising the purchase. If you are in anyway suspicious about them try and record their vehicle registration number - if it is safe to do so - and report it to the police by dialling 101 or 999 if it is an emergency. Home Security is Critical Remember your garden security to protect your items of value in the garden. Also consider your home whilst in the garden. Lock doors and windows to prevent sneak thieves helping themselves whilst you are busy in the garden. The shop was officially opened on Saturday 14th May, by the newly elected Mayor of Ledbury, Counsellor Debbie Baker, photographed here with owner Angela Tunnicliffe, and entertainer Wally. Lulu Little Bear, located at 80 The Homend, offers a quirky range of organic clothing from Swedish brands Smafolk and Duns, both known for their bold prints and vivid colours. OUR SPECIES of the month:

The Swift

T

he swift is a mediumsized, brown bird (though often appearing black in flight) with a small pale patch on the throat, long, curved wings and a short, forked tail.

This year, the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust is running a new series taking a closer look at one key species of flora or fauna each month. For June, we are looking at the swift or Apus apus . . .

42

The swift is known for its tremendous flying skills – eating, drinking, mating and sleeping on the wing. After fledging, birds spend three years continually in flight until they build their first nest at the age of four. Swifts pair for life and also return to the same nest site each year too. These nest sites are often under the eaves of houses, or in churches, and

created from a wide range of materials including feathers, paper, straw, hay and seeds. It is cemented together with saliva, and renovated and reused year after year. Where to see them Swifts arrive back from their overwintering sites in Africa in late May or early June. Their autumn migration then takes place from late July through August. Aside from spotting their nests on the outsides of buildings, you may often see swifts in large groups wheeling over roofs and calling to each other with their distinctive, highpitched ‘screaming’ call.

Events at Herefordshire Wildlife Trust June 2016 Wild Garden Party Wednesday 1st June 5.30pm -7.30pm A garden tea party to launch Herefordshire Wildlife Trust’s 30 Days Wild campaign. How to help swifts to thrive The modernisation of many buildings has resulted in loss of nesting sites so protecting current sites - it is an offence to intentionally take, damage or destroy the eggs, young or nest of a swift whilst it is being built or in use, under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 - and creating new sites is very important. Specially developed swift nest boxes can be fitted either within the eaves of a house or on the wall under the eaves, however as swifts need height to take off, single storey buildings are not suitable. To stop other birds using the nest box, block the opening until your local swifts return. Herefordshire Mammal Group are also currently undertaking a Bat and Swift Box Installation Project in ten churches across the county. Get in touch If you spot a swift – or any other species - please do let us know! You can submit records online at www.herefordshirewt.org, email them to us at records@herefordshirewt.co.uk or write to us at Lower House Farm, Ledbury Road, Hereford, HR1 1UT. Ledbury Focus

A Taste Of… BRAZIL B

razil is the 5th largest country in the world. The official language is Portuguese. Also, Brazil is the largest Portuguese-speaking country in the world and the only one in the Americas. This country is the world’s biggest coffee producer. Brazil’s climate varies, with the northeast being the driest part of the country. Brazilian cuisine has numerous devotees, worldwide. I searched for a reputable company that has authentic food and dishes, which goes the ‘extra mile’ to ensure a very memorable dining occasion, for all. Award-winning Preto has several Brazilian steakhouses in London and some out of London, with more planned. Halal options are available at the Queensway venue, too. The Preto philosophy is to provide a dining experience unlike any other, in a friendly, vibrant atmosphere. The meats, including beef, sirloin and rump steaks, plus chicken, etc, are slow-roasted over an authentic Brazilian churrascaria, capturing individual flavour. Up to 15 different cuts of spit-roasted meats are continuously carved at table, by Passadors. Over 18 dishes are available also, on the gourmet salad and hot bars, including rice, pastas, fresh-cut vegetables, plus Brazilian side dishes.

48

A double-sided disc controls the pace of the meal. The green side of the disc indicates to the Passadors to bring out skewers, carving the sizzling meats at the table, all cut to your request. The disc’s red side indicates to pause or stop. The Passador will offer the meats again when the disc is turned over and the green side is shown, uppermost. Desserts finish the dining occasion off, perfectly. Chocolate desserts are very popular, as is tiramisu, from an enticing display. There is a very good selection of wines/drinks available, too – something for all tastes. Both Danilo (Passador) and Bruno have great skills, to ensure satisfaction, to all. A really interesting concept to enjoy – very much so. Exceptionally good value for money. Brazilian entertainment is featured regularly (see website for details). Loyalty cards and gift vouchers are available – perhaps surprise someone special? The Rodizio Grill Dining Experience – Truly amazing! Email: info@rodiziopreto.co.uk www.rodiziopreto.co.uk As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

ith the warmer weather upon us this springtime, fleas and ticks will become extremely prevalent. Dogs and cats are out more exploring and hunting in the sunshine; parasites are a problem all year round but they are mainly a problem in the summertime. They are particularly rife in some areas especially where there is rough foliage and bracken. Ticks act as vectors: in the same way that a mosquito transmits malaria by sucking the blood from a person, the tick does the same to an animal. In the process of feeding, the disease will transmit from the tick to the dog or cat. This can cause irritation and localised infection and they sometimes carry diseases such as Lyme disease. Recently recorded in the UK is Babesiosis, a disease carried by a new imported tick (Dermacentor) and first seen in Essex. The parasite causes the dog's immune system to attack its own blood cells, causing severe anaemia and requiring a blood transfusion to treat. With pet travel increasing, this is the supposed cause of this tick and disease entering the UK. It is important to know that it isn’t contagious between dogs but prevention is much easier than cure. Breathtaking Avignon! D

o you remember as a child at school learning to sing the Avignon song? “Sur le pont d'Avignon l'on y danse l'on y danse . . .” I do, and I was amazed on a recent visit to Avignon, France, to find it printed on post cards. As I toured around the city I found myself humming the tune and it brought back many childhood memories. The city of Avignon has been inhabited for about 2000 years and has survived the Neolithic age, Greek period, Roman period, and the Barbarian invasion. Eventually Avignon became the capital of the Christian world. In 1309 a truly historic event took place when the Papal Court was moved from Rome to Avignon and it was then that the course of the city’s history took a new and exciting turn. Seven popes, all French, reigned at Avignon, and under their rule, the city was fortified and a huge castle built. This palace took around thirty years to build and today it is known as the Papal Palace, and what a magnificent place it is. Sadly the Pope no longer resides there and is Ledbury Focus

now back in Rome, but the palace is preserved as a magnificent type of museum and well worth a visit. I was delighted to see that the city was not only beautiful but also interesting, with lots of history. The tale that intrigued me most was that of the St Benezet Bridge, or I should say, what is left of it. The story goes, that Beniot, a young Shepard heard a voice telling him to go to Avignon and build a bridge over the Rhone river. When he arrived at the city he was vested with miraculous strength, amazingly he lifted an enormous rock and laid it on the bank of the river. From this base, enthusiastic crowds helped erect the 22 arches of the bridge, which measured 900 metres long, and Beniot became Saint Benezet. During the siege of Avignon, Louis VIII, ordered the bridge to be completely destroyed, but his orders were never completely carried out and some of the bridge remained. Later reconstruction work was carried out but the unpredictability of the Rhone has caused much damage. Today only 4 arches of the bridge, and the Saint

Nicholas’ Chapel at the entrance, still remain. Avignon is a city with so many breathtaking sights to see. To save your aching feet, a quick and easy way to get around is to take the tour train, this is open and you can get on and off as you please. There is also a Rhone river cruise where you will see all the best sights. The architecture is breathtaking, so, if you are ever in the South West of France, Avignon is not a place you should bypass, it is well worth a visit.

LEDBURY and THE WAR 1916

T

he third in the series of exhibitions about Ledbury and the First World War will be held in St Michael & All Angels’ Church this summer. In 2014 Life in Ledbury 1914-1918 covered all aspects of life in the town during the war, as well as showing “C” Company marching off to war on August 4th 1914. Last summer we commemorated the Ledbury connection with Gallipoli and the men who served there with Ledbury and Gallipoli 1915.

The displays this year will look at life here in the town in 1916 – the Cinema House and the Royal Hall, Empire Day in May, the October Fair and how Christmas 1916 was celebrated in the town. The lives of the eleven casualties from 1916 whose names appear on our war memorials will be commemorated. The biographies of those who died during the Battle of the Somme which were displayed on June 25th will be form part of the exhibition, as well as biographies of those who died in other actions.

utton, the gorgeous baby African elephant at West Midland Safari Park has turned two years old and has celebrated his birthday with some help from a local Beaver Scout Group. Elephant keepers at the Park decided that there was only one birthday present Sutton would really appreciate this year: a birthday cake made up of mounds of his favourite food. Making a cake fit for a growing elephant calf is no easy feat, so keepers called upon some local Beaver Scouts for help. Within half an hour the cake, (made up

64

Head Keeper of Elephants, Andy Plumb said, “It’s been a real pleasure watching Sutton grow and progress over the last two years. He now weighs a whopping 790kg and is almost four feet tall to the shoulder. His tusks have started to grow and last week he lost his first ever tooth! “Our elephants’ favourite thing is food, so there is no better birthday present than a cake made up of some of their most loved treats. It also contained some specially formulated elephant feed, which includes vital vitamins and minerals, so not only is it extremely tasty and fun to dismantle, it’s nutritional too. Let’s hope that the ‘terrible twos’ stage doesn’t exist with cheeky elephant calves!”

Melanie Williams, Beaver Scout Leader added, “KD9 Beaver Scouts were delighted to celebrate baby Sutton's second birthday with him and present him with the enormous cake that they had decorated. The beavers were tempted to have a piece, until they were told of its special ingredients, so settled for a grape instead. “We all felt very privileged to have had this unique opportunity to get up close to the famous Sutton and his mum in their safe habitat. The Beavers spoke about how very important it is that these animals are protected at the Safari Park in order for future generations to see and appreciate them when they visit.” Once the cake had been presented to the elephants, it didn’t last long. Both Sutton and Five used their powerful trunks to pick it apart and toss

P

lants should always be checked once a year.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

When to Re-Pot CONTAINERS Knowing when to re-pot is a reasonably easy thing to determine. The look of the plant and the lightness of the pot is the first thing to check, then if there are roots coming through the weep holes underneath that is a clear indication that the plant might be needing a re-pot.

68

A plant with special needs for compost, i.e. ericaceous, will need checking on a much more regular basis. I would suggest this is done a minimum of once a year, maybe more depending on what the plant is, because the acid in the ericaceous soil leeches out when it rains and the plant uses some of it, so topping up is always important. Feeding Feeding pot plants is always hugely important as they can dry out very quickly, and they can use up their goodness. Choosing a Pot When choosing a pot remember that you might be re-potting it in a few years’ time . Bell shaped pots are very good, but anything with a lip means it is difficult to get the plant out, which is something to look out for. Moisture Water crystals when put in at planting will help to hold moisture in; even a bit of lining in the bottom will help if

the plant is moisture loving. Obviously you don’t want to line the whole pot so that it fills up like a pond when it rains. If the roots prefer to be on the dry side, then crocks (broken bits of pot in the bottom) to help drainage is important, so knowing your plant, what to add and how to treat it is a good start. If a plant needs re-potting, your best bet is to gently tease the plant out; you could run a spade around the outside to very gently encourage it out. It is much easier to do this when the plant is dry than when wet, so by putting it in a sheltered area for a few days and not watering it before you

re-pot it is good idea. Pot bound If a plant is pot bound then gently teasing some of the roots out is very good. This is a golden opportunity to check the roots to ensure they are not too rotten and there are no bugs like vine weevil - a beetle that has a larva that pupates without a chrysalis. If there are any of these present they will eat the roots. It is best to hand pick them out, and there is a nematode, which is a natural biological control pesticide, that you can use - you water it into the pots and that is likely to get them out. If you find one there is likely to be a cluster of around 20 – they lay eggs in slightly

raised containers because it is warmer for incubating. Try and get as much of the old soil out as possible without disturbing the roots too much and then re-pot. If it is very root bound, you will need a clear inch around the existing root ball diameter to re-pot on into a new pot, the next size up. Maintenance Once you have re-potted you must keep the plant wellwatered and fed. I recommend a liquid fertilizer once every 6 weeks to help improve its health. Next month I will look at training and supporting plants.

Marvellous Marie Curie Year

N

ow that collecting tins have been emptied, money counted and banked, the members and supporters of the Marie Curie appeal are delighted to announce the total raised for this year from the spring 2015 to 2016 amounts to almost £14,750.00. This has come about though Marie Curie’s signature event the Blooming Great Tea Party, coffee mornings, collecting tins and boxes in shops, businesses and other places. In addition, funds raised by Ian and Jean Wheeler, private donations, sales of the logo ‘daffodils’ and other related goods, including the past and present Calendar, raffle sales and the highly popular Christmas Fayre. Added to these activities is the street collection when volunteers wear their distinctive yellow hats, wigs and other fun outfits in order to be visible and raise the profile of Marie Curie. Chairman Bruce Foster said: “Every penny we raise locally goes towards the cost of supporting our Marie Curie Nurses in our local area. We would like to say a big Thank You to all the people in the Ledbury area who support us so generously and so magnificently all year round, and to all those volunteers who make things happen!” Marie Curie provides care and support for people living with any terminal illness, and their families and have been carrying out this vital work for over 65 years – last year alone more than 40,000 people across the UK were cared for and in Ledbury, the monies raised will support the work in our Region. at your health?

Euphrasia 30c: Useful for very watery eyes and when the person may feel the need to wipe or rub them constantly. The eyelids (particularly lower) can swell and there can be a thick, infected discharge from the eye itself. There can be the sensation of a foreign body (such as a grain of sand) in eyes which can become very gummed up and sore. Nasal and throat symptoms are less marked but include watery mucus, which is easily discharged. Worse for sunlight and at night-time and for windy weather and indoors, and better for the cool, open air.

Probably, if it means losing a health problem you’re told there’s no cure for.

YOU CANNOT OVERDOSE ON HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES SO THEY ARE SAFE TO HAVE IN THE HOME WITH CHILDREN, AND CAN BE TAKEN AT THE SAME TIME AS CONVENTIONAL DRUGS.

Main homeopathic remedies for pollen reactions:

Allium Cepa 30c: This remedy’s symptoms are characterized by a strong burning sensation from the nose and eyes accompanied by a watery discharge. Eyes are sensitive to light, often red & irritated, while the nose may be red and sore from the burning, corrosive mucus. There can be violent sneezing, the voice hoarse and there can be a hacking cough. The kind of hay fever which can benefit from Allium Cepa often comes on worse in spring or August, is worse for being in a warm room and better off for cool air. One peculiarity of this remedy is that it particularly affects the left eye or nostril or may start off on the left side and spread to the right.

There are other remedies to consider so please ring me if you do not see your symptoms in the above remedies. You can buy homeopathic remedies direct from Helios Pharmacy online at a cost of £7.90 incl. postage.

Natrum Muriaticum 30c: I’ve had great outcomes with this remedy for seasonal allergy symptoms. The catarrh is usually white or clear and watery and can be extremely profuse. Persistent violent sneezing – in the mornings, loss of smell or taste, and itching in the nose. The eyes can be watery and throat can be dry and sore. Rhinitis responding to this remedy can often be accompanied by violent, pulsating headaches made much worse by the heat of the sun, or by increased emotional sensitivity as this is also a big migraine remedy. The patient may prefer to be alone and feel quite touchy or tearful. Symptoms are worse for heat or for lying down, and can improve for cold bathing, at the seashore, or in the open air. Sabadilla 30c: The need for this remedy will manifest during the early spring or at harvest time. There can be persistent sneezing, transparent mucus and an itchy, stuffed up nose. Eyes may water in the open air, from sunlight or whilst sneezing. Symptoms are worse for cold air and there is usually improvement from eating warm food and warm drinks or from keeping warm. I once gave this remedy to a family of four and within one hour all their symptoms abated.
