Hello Readers... Welcome to the June issue of the Ledbury Focus. I hope I’m not tempting fate, but it looks like this year’s very wet spring is finally over, and summer is here at last. Time to get out the sun-screen and barbeques, and enjoy the lovely long summer evenings.
Ledbury Focus Publisher & Advertising Grapevine Publications (Worcestershire) Ltd 3 Rye Street • Birtsmorton • WR13 6AS Tel: 01684 833715 Mob: 07754 170286 info@grapevinepublications.co.uk www.grapevinepublications.co.uk
Coming up in June, the big event is of course, Ledbury Community Day. This is a great opportunity for you to get to know some of the businesses and organisations in Ledbury that you may not come across on a daily basis. I will be there, in St Katherine’s Hall, representing the Ledbury Focus, so I do hope you will come along and introduce yourselves.

Two other dates for your diary: 9th and 10th June is the Hellens Garden Festival (see page 64) in aid of St Michael’s Hospice, and 24th June is the Blooming Great Tea Party (see page 26) in aid of Marie Curie. Both are extremely good causes, so make a note not to miss them.

ge UK Hereford & Localities is an independent local charity, dedicated to improving the lives of older people across most of Herefordshire and surrounding areas. Our mission is to help people to remain independent and comfortable for as long as possible in their own homes and communities. The charity delivers a number of key services including Information & Advice, footcare clinics, help and companionship at home, day centres and lunch clubs. We are the leading voluntary organisation supporting older people in the county. Trustees Trustees are responsible for the good governance and financial management of the charity, and for ensuring that its core purpose of helping older people is carried out. We are looking for committed individuals to expand the range of trustee skills as well as to consolidate existing skills with an eye to succession planning. We require enthusiastic and motivated people, who are sympathetic to the aims and objectives of Age UK Hereford & Localities, to fulfil these voluntary duties. Ledbury Focus

Ledbury Community Day 2018 on
Saturday 9th June
C
ommunity Day is building up to be another great event
Local groups and organisations are joining up to take part in the 6th Ledbury Community Day on Saturday 9th June. Again more than 70 groups and organisations will be present all round Ledbury to tell you what they do, what they can offer you or how you can help them. New this year is the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity who are bringing
their POD – a decommissioned air ambulance helicopter cabin - to Ledbury for people of all ages to get some experience of what it is like to be a part of the crew. The Friends of Ledbury Children’s Centre are celebrating the centre’s 10th birthday with a fun day for children with all kinds of activities. The Master’s House will feature a special photo exhibition with the chance to make a bug hotel, visits round the building, news about the threats to the library service, and a special invitation to experience firsthand the extraordinary skill of hand forging. You can try your hand at lawn bowls or short mat bowls, find out about our local running and cricket clubs and the many other leisure and educational activities available in Ledbury and district. A number of local groups will be pleased to tell you about how you can help them to serve the local community in all kinds of
18
ways and several welfare groups will be present to tell you how they can help you. You will also be able to comment on local health services, and find out more about our heritage sites and what’s happening at the Barrett Browning Institute. The full programme will be available shortly on the Community Day website www. ledburycommunityday.org.uk – a printed programme will be available in late May. There is still some space available for any groups interested in taking part – phone the organisers at 01531 633637. Paul Kinnaird, chair of the organisers, said “We are looking forward to another great day to celebrate all that Ledbury has to offer thanks to the incredible work of those who support all these groups”.

any people suffering from Hay fever, will agree that the spring and summer months can be miserable. If you are one of those people read on for suggestions that may significantly reduce your symptoms.
Causes of allergies / intolerance include: Foods such as wheat and dairy. A good indication of allergy or intolerance’ is when you constantly crave certain foods.
What are allergic reactions? Allergic reactions occur when a person is exposed to or ingests a substance or food that the body does not recognise. An immune response is triggered which is the reaction people experience as an allergy. With a true allergy, the person responds to any amount of the substance.
Chemicals around the home or workplace could also be causing problems as could airborne substances such as moulds.
What is Intolerance? Intolerance occurs when an individual is exposed to a certain amount of the offending substance or food, too much for their body to handle which tips the balance. Stress levels effect intolerance greatly. If a person is very busy and under pressure, their tolerance levels will be low, on the other hand, tolerance will be high when a person is relaxed and balanced. You may have experienced this on holidays when you eat things that would normally cause a problem for you but because you are relaxed and stress-free no problems occur. Typical allergy/ intolerance symptoms include: A runny nose, streaming eyes, itching, sneezing, & rashes. Hidden allergies could also be causing problems for you and could be the root cause of other health issues such as; arthritis, PMS, IBS, digestive disturbances, weight loss / gain, eczema, asthma, migraine, fibroids to name but a few.
Grass and tree pollen are common allergens and cause hay fever for lots of people during the summer months.
Other allergens may be more complex. How I work with Hay Fever & Allergies I have several tools and techniques that I can use that can help with hay fever and other allergic problems. I aim to help clients build natural resistance and boost tolerance levels to allergens. This means they are more able to cope when they come into contact with the things that have previously caused them problems. A technique I use a lot when treating clients with hay fever and allergies is called the TMJ short for temporomandibular joint! The technique helps to balance the jaw and its alignment with the skull. Often disruption in this joint results after dentistry, damage to other areas of the spine, compensation, stress and tension and a multitude of other reasons. When the TMJ is out of balance all sorts of problems can result such as: hay fever, allergies, eye problems, ear problems, headaches, migraines, sinus problems, congestion, asthma, dizziness and the list goes on. There are several other procedures within the Bowen Technique that allow me to work with allergies or intolerance that are effecting an individual in different ways. These
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
include the Respiratory procedure, the Vagus nerve procedure and several Digestive procedures. In order to address hay fever, I suggest that individuals have some treatment a month or so before their hay fever season begins. I will also use some of my Kinesiology kit including specific allergens such as grass pollen and tree pollen, depending on what the individual is struggling with. I will place the allergens on the body which allows the body to register them whilst we are doing the corrective work to alleviate the allergy symptoms. I also use Health Kinesiology in order to work with allergy and intolerance imbalance for clients. This therapy allows me to find patterns of stress within the body such as Hay Fever and then use a gentle “corrective” technique to balance the body systems and switch off the allergy symptoms. Often the Triple Warmer Meridian is working very hard when allergies are present, this meridian is linked into the immune response which is on overload when an individual is struggling with allergies. I have several techniques that I show my clients to practice on themselves between treatments that help the meridian to balance. Self-help tips • Look at your nutrition; sometimes when our body is not achieving the correct amounts of certain vitamins and minerals allergy symptoms may occur. • Supplement your diet; certain supplements are proven to reduce allergic symptoms, Quercetin which is a plant flavonoid is one of these it’s been known to reduce allergic reactions especially hayfever & asthma. Vitamin C is a great supplement also as it helps the immune system. Other supplements would include natural anti-inflammatories such as essential fatty acids and curcumin / tumeric. • Eat more organic; organic foods that are free from chemicals tend to be easier to eat for those people suffering with allergies • Wash fruit & veg; Even organic produce should be washed thoroughly before use. Chemical residue and moulds on fruit and vegetables builds in between them been picked and packed and cause problems for some people. • Avoid processed foods; such as wheat & dairy products, substitute with organic whole foods such as rye and spelt products. • Use eco-friendly skin & household products; these are much kinder to your skin and your body systems, clothes, household & environment. Exercise for the over 60’s Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, with plenty of room on each side. With a 5lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you’ll find you can hold this position for a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10lb potato bags. Then try 50lb potato bags, and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight out for more than a full minute. After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag. *******

A school teacher was arrested at Heathrow Airport this morning as he attempted to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a compass, a slide-rule and a calculator. At a press conference just before noon today, the Home Secretary said he believes the man is a member of the notorious AI Gebra movement. Although he did not identify the man, he confirmed he has been charged by the police with carrying weapons of maths instruction. "AI-Gebra is a problem for us", the Home Secretary said. "They derive solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values. They use secret code names like “x” and "y" and refer to themselves as "unknowns" but we have determined that they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philosopher Isosceles used to say: 'There are 3 sides to every triangle.'" The Home Secretary went on to say "Teaching our children sentient thought processes and equipping them to solve problems is dangerous and puts our government at risk." Ledbury Focus

t would seem that the warmer weather has finally made an appearance which means our dogs and cats are more at risk of catching fleas. Some pets suffer from an allergic reaction to the flea saliva and need only a couple of bites to trigger a severe skin reaction. In some cases, pets with a heavy flea burden can become anaemic. For these reasons, it is important to treat your pet regularly against fleas. To understand how to control fleas, it is important that we understand their life cycle. 1. Only the adult fleas are present on our pets. The ones we see make up less than 5% of a flea problem. 2. Each adult female flea can lay up to 40 – 50 eggs per day, which will drop off your pet. These then lay dormant in your carpets, upholstery and bedding for up to a year. 3. The eggs will hatch into larvae which live off flea faeces and dead organic matter in the carpet, bedding or upholstery, after which they pupate. The pupae stage (or cocoon) can remain dormant in the house for up to a year. 4. The pupae are then stimulated into hatching by movement and warmth Ledbury Focus
Flea Focus provided by passing pets or people. 5. The adult fleas then emerge and are ready for their first meal and to begin the life cycle all over again When we look at the life cycle, it is easy to see why pets (and some people) suffer so much and why fleas can even be a problem in the winter. So, how do you know if your pet has fleas? • He or she may be scratching • Tiny black flecks of ‘flea dirt’ in the pets fur or left on the bedding • Areas of irritated skin • Patches of hair loss How do you control fleas? It is important to use a product specifically designed for the animal type. This is because some of the products designed for treating dogs contains an ingredient called Permethrin which is highly toxic to cats. We
have a number of products available in our parasite “toolbox”, including sprays, collars, spot-ons and a very effective tablet for dogs which will provide three months' protection. Worried about forgetting to purchase the next treatment? Don't worry, we offer a text reminder service that will inform you when your pet is due the next treatment. When you receive this message you simply give the surgery a call to order and our team will get it ready for you to collect.

t the 7th Annual Seed Swap in Lyttelton Hall, Great Malvern on April 14th over £500 was raised for the charity Tools For Self Reliance. This was achieved partly by the sale of surplus tools and partly by the generous donation of all proceeds from the day by the event organisers. TFSR CYMRU also raised over £200 through the sale of refurbished antique tools and this will support their work in Tanzania. Malvern Hills Tools For Self Reliance began life just a year ago with the aim of collecting, sorting and refurbishing unwanted tools and sending them on to projects in Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Zambia. In that time we have received almost 100 donations of tools of all sorts and have sent 7 crates of refurbished tools as well as larger items of equipment, plus 14 sewing machines. Keep them coming! We intend to buy seven new welding kits with the £500 mentioned above and these will be sent next month to projects in Malawi. This marks a very satisfying end to our first 12 months of operation. If you would like to donate old tools or maybe join our friendly group, which meets every Wednesday, please call Martin on:

Drink Driving West Mercia Police. Roadside checks will be carried out at all times of the day and night and on all types of road.
T
he Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia is warning people of the dangers of driving under the influence of drink or drugs this summer. Drink and drug driving offences typically increase during the summer with more opportunity for people to think they can risk mixing drinking with driving. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the consequences of driving after drinking and the impact it can have. The campaign is being highlighted with two hard-hitting viral videos which will be promoted across West Mercia on social media. As well as targeted campaign activity over the summer months to raise awareness, enforcement of these offences will be a key priority for
36
Over the past three years, 122 people have been killed or seriously injured in West Mercia as a result of collisions involving drink or drugs. Of particular concern is those motorists aged between 17 and 30; Approx 45% of drivers involved in collisions causing death or serious injury involving drink or drugs were aged 17-30, of which around 82% were male. The immediate consequences for anyone if they are caught drink driving include a minimum 12 month driving ban, up to 6 months in prison, a fine of up to ÂŁ5,000 and a criminal record. A conviction for drink driving can have a major impact on the future prospects of a young person. For example, it may lead to job loss, significant problems when applying for a job in the future and difficulty travelling abroad. New drug driving laws brought in three years ago also make it a lot easier for the police to tackle drivers who choose to drive whilst
under the influence of drugs, with new drug testing kits in place to detect cannabis and cocaine. The consequences if you are found guilty of a drug driving offence are the same as for drink driving. Vicki Bristow, Communications Manager for the Safer Roads Partnership says: "During the summer months most of us like to enjoy the longer evenings but this often puts people in situations where they may be drinking more than usual. Our campaign aims to highlight the fact that mixing drinking and driving simply isn't worth the risk. Our message is very simple: If you're driving, don't drink any alcohol at all. Alcohol affects everyone very differently and any amount can impair your ability to drive. The only safe option is to avoid alcohol completely if you are driving, as even 'just one drink' could put you over the limit." The campaign coincides with the launch on 1st June of the summer drink drive campaign by the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) which all police forces across the UK are asked to support.

Quad bikes and All Terrain Vehicles are among the items most likely to be stolen in rural areas. Owners of such machines are advised to take the following crime prevention measures to combat these thefts. 1. Secure any Quad bike inside a locked building (as near to the main dwelling as possible) 2. Remove keys 3. Anchor the Quad down with a heavy duty chain and padlock 4. Alarm the building if possible 5. Take a photograph of the machine and keep safe any serial numbers if not road registered. 6. Fit a tracking device 7. defined edge you are after. It is always a good idea to get rid of this small piece you are cutting out because it will have grass seeds on it etc., and if you flick it into the bed you will spread the weeds and grass into your bed.
Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
Lawn Edgings
N
ow the growing season has kicked off, edging is very important. Why do we edge a lawn? Well there are a number of reasons for doing this: one is to give a nice crisp edge and define your lawn. It always looks tidier and managed even if the beds aren’t up to scratch. The other reason for doing it is to keep grass and weeds from spreading from your lawn and onto your bed and vice versa. The traditional way to edge your
40
lawn is using a half moon tool and cutting a sharp defined edge. If you have no edge currently and would like to create an edge, the best thing to do is to lay a hosepipe out or some string, and shape the beds the way you would like them to look. When you’re doing this you need to bear in mind that you don’t want to create areas which are difficult to mow. Using a half moon or even a spade, cut down an inch and a half, and try and get a wedge out to give you the
There are other options, which are normally done during the winter to make life easier. A lot of clients are putting in block paving or sets down as an edge to the lawn. This needs digging out, concreting in place and pointing. The advantage of this is that you don’t need to edge up so it saves some time and when you are mowing you can run the mower on the edge of the sets giving it a nice crisp finish. You can put in a metal edge but this is best done when you are building the garden and laying the turf. This is because it is difficult to lay where there are dips, etc., in the lawn and needs pegging into place properly. The lawn would need top dressing and seeding in these areas to make it nice and level so that the mower doesn’t catch any edges. The disadvantage of this type of edging
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
is that if you want a very sharp finish to the lawn, the mower has to go right to the edges and if the mower falls off the edge of the lawn the metal can damage it. If you have time, using edging sheers or small detachable strimmers can be used to edge up. It is better to edge the lawn before mowing it so that the mower can pick up the cuttings etc. Some people edge up and leave the cuttings where they are; this is fine but can make the garden look messy with dying grass lying next to the nice crisp edge, so a bit of time spent collecting the trimmings will give a better finish.
Whilst you are edging up, it gives you an opportunity to go around and look at your borders in detail. You can then see things which you would not normally notice from a distance, e.g. green fly on your roses, which you can then treat accordingly. So having time to check your beds is quite important and doing this whilst edging your lawn makes it more time efficient.

alking through the corridors of power in the House of Commons, passing magnificent pictures, statues, tapestries and architecture illustrating historical events, Jan Long, a member of Ledbury Rotary Club made her way to the Terrace Pavilion in Westminster. Sitting next to a rather grey River Thames with a cool breeze and threats of rain, those Rotarians who had been part of the Polio Immunisation Teams in India, gathered at the invitation of MP William Wragg. The memorable event provided an opportunity to hear inspirational speeches by William Wragg, who revealed that he had been involved with Rotary since his teenage years, having been a finalist in the Rotary “Youth Speaks” competition. and also from the Rt Hon Penny Morduant MP, Secretary of State for International Development, expressed grateful thanks to the "amazing work being done by Rotarians to eradicate Polio globally" and mentioned increased funding for this purpose!

The Great British Blooming
J
ohn Ruskin, Victorian philanthropist, art critic and artist, once said, ‘There is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather’ and I tend to agree with him. All weather is important, we need the rain and the sun and even the icy cold. And beauty can usually be found in all weathers; sparkling, snow blanketed landscapes, raindrops hanging from trees or captured in the leaves of plants and yes, even fog has its beauty. Just look at
the way it highlights cobwebs in the hedgerows, or how it turns familiar scenes into places of mystery and best of all, when the sun pierces a shroud of mist with shafts of light. But on the Malverns one March evening I wondered if Ruskin was right. It seemed like there’d been nothing but bad weather the scene as bleak as January, captured in monochrome without a hint of sun to give it any colour. Would spring ever arrive? Then a taste of summer in mid-April, and like an aperitif it whetted our appetites, had us all expectant of a delicious course to come; it didn’t appear. But the warm sun did bring something delightful. Native wildflowers have evolved to cope with the vagaries of the British climate. My wild daffodils had toughed out the cold spring the cultivars bowed their heads and sulked. The primroses ignored it and the bluebells hunkered down and waited. But that brief spell of sunshine and heady temperatures in the twenties triggered an explosion of blooms from trees to wildflowers; grim for hay-fever sufferers, but wonderful for everyone else.
Ledbury Focus
Cowslips thrust their butteryellow blooms above the grass on the side of my drive and as if a fairy godmother had waved her magic wand the green clad slopes were turned into a sapphire haze by bluebells and snuggled in amongst them, primroses added splashes of pale gold. An eruption of lady’s smock waved dainty, pale lilac flowers in the wind. Violets peeped, like shy maidens, through the grass fronds and as I tiptoed through them I thought of summer and the fritillary butterfly whose caterpillars will feast on the violets’ leaves. As if from nowhere forget-me-nots added their tiny flowers of ice blue to the pallet, the blackthorn, pear and cherry swathed the hedges in blooms of white lace, turning golden pink in the evening sun. The monochrome landscape was gone. In the dull days which followed that taste of summer the Hills were washed with colour. And there is more to come: clouds of hawthorn blossom, dazzling buttercups and dashing pink foxgloves. What isn’t there to love, even on a rainy day? Photos and article by Geraldine Holbourn

une is a wonderful month for wildflowers. Although wildflower meadows are now a rare sight (over 97% have been lost since the 1940s in the UK) there are still some wonderful examples in Herefordshire such as Stockings Meadow near Bromyard and Common Hill Nature Reserve near Fownhope. Although a cold spring has meant that our vegetation is rather late in coming this year, bird’s foot trefoil, oxeye daisies and Lady’s smock

Woodland flowers are also flourishing with yellow archangel, foxgloves and early purple orchids appearing as the bluebells fade while the verges become frothy with cow parsley and campion. As the flowers bloom, bees, butterflies and other insects are busy gathering pollen and nectar. June is a wonderful month to go butterfly spotting on a sunny day. Look out for holly blue, speckled wood, ringlet, meadow brown, marbled white and small tortoiseshell. (Find spotter sheets
to download free at www.wildlife watch.org.uk). Birds are also busy raising chicks this month. Remember that if you come across a fledgling on the ground, this is quite natural. Baby birds often leave the nest before they are fully able to fly and their parents will continue to visit and feed them. Only if it is in imminent danger should you move it to a safe place – but not so far away that its parents can’t find it. What to do this month What not to do! “My Box of Garden Delights” The competition is split into three age groups for 5 to 8 years, 9 to 11 years and 12 to 16 years. Boxes must be no smaller than an average seed tray and no bigger than a standard fruit tray. Judging will take place in the afternoon on Sunday 8th July at a venue dependent on the weather and there will be a prizes for each age group. After the winners have been announced, the boxes will be left securely on display, for the RHS judges to view when they visit the town the following day, Monday 9th July. Clive Gunn Chairman of Ledbury in Bloom said “We hope that family, teachers and community leaders will encourage as many children as possible to get involved and enter the competition. After all there is no limit to the imagination when it comes to gardening.” This year Ledbury in Bloom intends to make the entrances to the town as inviting as possible to visitors and residents alike.
Following on from the successful improvements being made to the roundabouts, one new project this year will be the flower beds at Ledbury Station. “Without the generosity of our sponsors and the dedication of our volunteers, who turn out in all weathers, we would struggle to make the town look as award winning as it does each July.” Said Clive Gunn “We always need more volunteers and with the recent changes at Queens Walk, we need even more. Everything that we do can be sponsored, starting from plants and compost for a tub at £25. To find out more please give me a call.” To enter “My Box of Garden Delights” go to https://ledburyinbloom.wordpress.com and download an entry form and full terms and conditions. Your entry must be signed by an adult and must be received no later than Monday 25th June. Good luck! To sponsor or become a volunteer please contact Clive Gunn on tel: 01531 634716.

Ring the Bells for a Birthday!
M
ore Morris dancers than you could shake a stick at are due to gather for a very special celebration on Saturday 9th June in Leominster. Local women’s side Jenny Pipes Morris are holding a 30th birthday party with dancing around the town from 11am from five different Morris teams.
Jenny Pipes was an infamous local figure, known as the last woman in England to be ducked for being a ‘scold’ and featured, along with members of the Morris side, in an episode of Antiques Road trip screened last year. Today’s Morris dancers are proud of their famous namesake, but it is said that none of them will own up to being a ‘scold’ or nagging wife!
You can see the dancers showcase their talents in Corn Square and outside The Grange from 11 o’clock until lunchtime, then at The White Lion. In the afternoon the dancers will perform in the beautiful setting of Berrington Hall, so why not follow them there for an afternoon of music, dancing and great British heritage.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see several contrasting styles of dancing, which will add to the colour and vibrancy of the day. Sides attending include Appleyard Country Dancers from Malvern, Foxwelp Morris from Moccas, Glorishears of Brummagem and the newly formed Ledbury Border Morris side, as well as the more familiar sight in the town of the Jenny Pipes dancers themselves. METHOD yy
Preheat the oven to 125°C. Whisk the egg whites until stiff.
INGREDIENTS
4 egg whites 300g sugar
yy
Add 200g of sugar whilst still whisking, until the meringue is very stiff.

yy
Place the mixture in a piping bag and pipe out 30 meringues on a tray lined with grease-proof paper.

yy
Once dry and light brown in colour take the meringues out of the oven and allow to cool.

Why men shouldn’t write advice columns Dear John I hope you can help me. The other day, I set off for work, leaving my husband in the house watching TV. My car stalled, and then it broke down about a mile down the road, and I had to walk back to get my husband’s helps. When I got home, I couldn’t believe my eyes. He was in our bedroom with the neighbour’s wife! I am 32, my husband is 34, and we have been married for 10 years. When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted they had been having an affair for the past six months. He won’t go to counselling, and I’m afraid I am a wreck and need advice urgently. Can you please help? Sincerely Sheila
Dear Sheila A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the injectors. I hope this helps, Regsards John

The Power of Garlic O
n a recent visit to the Isle of Wight, my husband Michael and I came across The Garlic Farm, and took their Garlic Experience.
The complete garlic experience consists of learning about the mysteries of garlic, its amazing flavours, and the healing and regenerative properties that have been captivating people for centuries. Simple remedies like crushing a clove in warm water and gargling will heal ulcers in the mouth and sore throats. As part of the Garlic Experience, you can learn more about cooking, growing and medical benefits of this incredible allium; learn about the history of the farm, and take a ride on a tractor and trailer around the growing fields. Alternatively, you can choose from one of the mapped out walking routes. We were amazed at the amount of information and recipes we were given - I was given a recipe for smoked garlic roast chicken, and Black Garlic Chocolate Brownies. For food and garlic lovers the Farm Shop was bursting with traditional, innovative, and some off-beat products, all guaranteed to please. We found mayo's, chutneys, pickles, relishes, mustards, sauces, beer, salt, olives, popcorn, pork scratchings, and even garlic vodka. We took the taste challenge, and tasted some delicious flavours, including the hottest flavours from around the world.
70
Lured by the aromas from the restaurant, we decided to have a break and sample some of their delicious garlic bread and cakes. There was a huge queue at the ice cream counter where excited children were waiting to taste home made garlic ice cream. I treated myself to a growing set consisting of garlic bulbs, and manure. Keen gardeners will know about the benefits of growing garlic, not just in a vegetable patch, or tubs, but if planted between rose bushes they protect against the incursion of greenfly and other garden pests... The farm has a large, unique planting stock to choose from, including the world famous Elephant Garlic, the largest garlic bulbs outside of the USA, and their garlic seeds have won RHS Gold Medal and coveted Awards of Gardening Merit. If you would like to sample all this perfection you can. You can also holiday in one of the farm’s six holiday cottages, or try one of their yurts. It’s a glorious setting, facing South, under the Downs, and just ten minutes from the sea. The Garlic Farm is open every day, from 9am until 5pm. Their website is www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk and phone number 01983 865378. article and photographs by Pamela Green
