and see how your room will be transformed, as our designers create it using the latest 3D CAD technology. We cater for all projects, whatever your budget or project size. We have the latest ranges of quality Kitchens and Bathrooms from British and German suppliers. Come and see the stunning Stoneham display, a handmade British kitchen from a company founded in 1864, and holding a Royal Warrant. Come and experience our showpiece room setting, incorporating a dining area, snug area and kitchen. You can see the latest audio visual system by Control 4. Come and visit the showroom where there will be promotions to support the Cooking Display on the 8th April.

• How do you avoid ‘soggy bottoms’ when cooking quiches, pizzas and flans? • How do you perfectly bake cakes, breads and pastries to achieve delicious, moist baked goods every time? • How do you cook rotisserie style chicken in your oven or ensure your pork crackling is really crisp? • How do you bake garlic bread and a Victoria sponge cake in the same oven at the same time and yet get no intermingling of flavours? Come and find out on Saturday 8th April, when a Siemens, expertly trained Home Economist, will be available from 10.30am to 4.30pm to answer any questions you may have about buying or using Siemens appliances.

Well, another month has flown by and here we are, at the beginning of March already. Valentine's Day has come and gone, and Mother's Day is just a couple of weeks away time to book a table at Mum's favourite restaurant for lunch - she deserves at least on day off a year! This month's article by Jan Long, one of our regular contributors, is very thought-provoking, and makes us realise how lucky we are to be living in a country where dread diseases such as polio, have been eradicated. And still on the subject of Jan, as I write, she is planning on yet another venture to raise money for charity. This time, on 23rd February, she will be climbing the Millenium Dome! By the time you read this, Jan will have completed her challenge - successfully no doubt. Also in this month's issue is an appeal from both Age UK and St Michaels Church, both of whom are looking for volunteers. So if you have a few hours to spare, and would like to find out more, the relevant contact details can be found on page 11 and page 20 respectively. That's it for now, enjoy Mother's Day, and I'll see you again next month.

General Security

ADVICE Shed Burglaries Between Friday 3rd February 2017 and Sunday 5th February 2017 two sheds were broken into in the Ledbury area. Any information please ring 101. Security Tips The first aspect of protecting your shed is to fit a good quality lock. There are a range of sturdy padlocks, pad bolts, hasps and staples available on the market but make sure you get one that is appropriate to the strength of your shed door and frame. Remember that any opening windows on your shed will also require a good quality lock.

These systems can be purchased from most DIY stores and locksmiths.

delivery (usually sold on an annual membership basis at £59.99 per year).

Also consider using a property marking system to protect the items in your shed. Property marking makes your belongings much less attractive to thieves as they realise that the goods can easily be identified as stolen and traced back to the original owner.

To take advantage of this offer go to http://shop.smartwater.com/ buy-crime-offer or call 0870 242 8899. Make sure you quote discount code WDBCRIME25.

There are many ways to mark property; including engraving, UV marking and forensically coded systems such as SmartWater.

In addition to a lock, you may wish to consider fitting an alarm on your shed. There are three types of alarm system that could be used: • An infra-red detector in the shed that picks up on movement and body heat. • A door contact system. • An alarm within the padlock itself, which sounds if the lock is forced open or tampered with. 16

All residents in the West Mercia and Warwickshire policing areas can take advantage of the benefits offered by security marking their property with SmartWater at the reduced promotional one-off price of £25 inclusive of VAT and

SCAM WARNING Payment Diversion Alert Fraudsters are emailing members of the public who are expecting to make a payment for property repairs. The fraudsters will purport to be a tradesman who has recently completed work at the property and use a similar email address to that of the genuine tradesman. They will ask for funds to be transferred via bank transfer. Once payment is made the victims of the scam soon realise they have been deceived when the genuine tradesman requests payment for their services. Protect Yourself • Always check the email address is exactly the same as previous correspondence with the genuine contact.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: betty@grapevinepublications.co.uk

• For any request of payment via email verify the validity of the request with a phone call to the person who carried out the work. • Check the email for spelling and grammar as these signs can indicate that the email is not genuine. • Payments via bank transfer offer no financial protection; consider using alternative methods such as a credit card or PayPal which offer protection and an avenue for recompense.

St MichaEL & aLL aNGELS LEDBURY

L

EDBURY is

extremely fortunate to have a most distinguished Parish Church in the centre of the town. A thousand years old, St Michael’s possesses outstanding stained-glass, brilliant stonework and a superb copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’ painted by Ledbury artist, Thomas Ballard, in 1824. The Sanctuary light in the East wall is, as far as we know, the only one to be seen in the entire country. No wonder over 12,000 visitors come to see all this; they come from all over the world.

We provide stewards every day of the week throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn months and we would welcome anyone to join our team. The organization is flexible: one or two hours a week, a fortnight, a month – whatever suits you. There is no need to be a church goer; anyone who believes our church building is important is welcome to join in – and it is fun meeting the many interesting people who visit.

Anyone interested in becoming a steward should contact the Church Office (01531 631531: ledbury.ministry@talktalk.com)

The Rector, The Reverend Keith Hilton-Turvey, says, “The more smiling faces there are to greet visitors to our Church, the more those who have travelled so far will see that the Town cares as much as they do.” 20

Success at last? I

’m not saying this too loudly incase I tempt fate, so I will whisper the news: I think I’ve finally defeated the squirrels . . . ssssh, they might be listening. In the past I’ve tried all kinds of anti-squirrel devices. I even made a cage that enclosed the entire top section of one of the stations and was annoyed by the smug look on their faces when they’d succeeded in squeezing through the mesh . . . have you ever been laughed at by a squirrel? But you know what they say, ‘He who laughs last, laughs longest.’ You may recall that I fixed a new feeder from an apple tree in the orchard with a squirrel baffle above it. At the same time I purchased two squirrel proof feeders and a put a second baffle on one of the feeding stations. Back in the house I monitored the results. Now it was my turn to be smug as I watched squirrel after squirrel Ledbury Focus

being thwarted by my new and improved bird feeding scheme. They shinned up the apple tree, ran along the branch and to my surprise didn’t work out how to get on the rope. There was much tail twitching in irritation. Lacking perseverance they gave up, ran down the tree and headed to the next, normally reliable food source. One look at the baffle was enough. ‘Ah’, I could see the squirrels thinking, ‘one more place to go’. And with a cheeky shake of the tail, they headed to the telegraph pole where hangs a feeder filled with suet pellets. They climbed with confidence, but were in for a surprise. Every time they alighted on to the feed port, it snapped shut. Squirrels 0, Geraldine victory! I haven’t seen a squirrel in the garden since. One afternoon I answered the door to a delivery man who stood on the doorstep not speaking for quite a few minutes

before he asked me what the birds were that were singing. They were in the oak tree, silhouetted against the sky and I couldn’t see them clearly so I guessed they were probably a flock of finches or great tits. They were not exactly singing either, it was more a discordant twittering similar to the noise a flock of starlings make. The delivery man smiled, lovely he said, you don’t hear bird song anymore. I was shocked. Where did he live? Then I thought how noisy our towns and cities are and maybe it isn’t possible to hear birds singing in that environment. Although apparently some sing louder to overcome the background noise. A world without birdsong? Unimaginable. Will this be the future when our song birds are in serious decline? I hope not. Harrison, the 'End Polio Now' Bear

I

ndia has a population of 1.25 billion people and, with its splendid history, culture and diversity, is a magnet for tourists. Yet there lurks beneath the surface a darker side of poverty and polio. Fear of the scourge of malformed limbs, twisted spines, paralysis and sometimes death from the poliovirus, brings dread to families when children display the early signs of the disease. Overcoming suspicion, hostility and superstition, teams of volunteers, winning the hearts and minds of these most vulnerable, have worked tirelessly for many years to eradicate the virus. This has been achieved worldwide, with only Afghanistan and bordering Pakistan not polio free. In the battle to defeat polio, in late January Rotarians from clubs around the globe joined forces with health workers to vaccinate every child in India against it. Immunisation now takes the form of drops given orally to all children under the age of five, and I had the opportunity to join teams from other countries to work in the capital, Delhi.

36

The programme of work began at 8am each day. The first main event, following a briefing, was a visit to a

school whose 800 pupils took part in a colourful parade and rally to herald the arrival of the immunisation teams and raise awareness of the National Immunisation Project. Small booths set up around the poorest areas attracted families, with children lining up for their life-saving drops. Joining us on this humanitarian mission were Eve Conway, President of Rotary in Britain and Ireland, and Katie Foster, a journalist from The Independent. I shared a room with the delightful Gill, a Rotarian from Surrey, who was moved to tears by the enormity of the polio problem. Evenings were taken up with visits and Rotary meetings. The smells, sounds, bustle and energy that is Delhi are remarkable; sacred cows wander across busy roads, and stray dogs, of which there are hundreds, are savvy enough to follow them, sensing perhaps that they fear no vehicles. The slums are indescribably awful, testaments to abject poverty, with no sanitation or infrastructure. Rubbish and excrement surround

personal account of my visit to Delhi, immunising children against the poliovirus them. Igloo-shaped dwellings are made from any available pieces of wood and their roofs from branches, plastic and material. A hole in the ground serves as a stove for the preparation of food. Goats are a valuable possession, all of them comically wearing cardigans, with small sacks over their udders to prevent their milk being stolen. Accompanied by an Indian health worker, weaving our way single file through the warrens, we immunised where we could and were greeted with smiles of welcome. A young girl peeped out from behind her mother’s sari and seemed mesmerised by my appearance. She pointed her finger at me, whispering something to her mother, who smiled. I asked the health worker what had been said and she replied that the child, who had apparently seen a picture of a golden haired person serving a Deity, had asked, “Does the golden lady work for God?” Our visits took us to the Rotary Foundation-endowed St. Stephen’s Hospital, where the Polio Unit’s dedicated orthopaedic miracle worker, Dr Matthew labours long Ledbury Focus

hours to provide mobility, albeit by dint of callipers and crutches, to the seriously crippled young adults not immunised when they were infants. A visit to a Rotary funded-Diabetes hospital was of course of great interest to me and, in view of Ledbury Rotary’s Diabetic foot-care programme, which is shared with a Rotary Club in Tobago, enabled me to have a fruitful dialogue with the clinicians.

As for Harrison, the End Polio Now Bear - he was a great success and loved by all. Would I do it again? Without hesitation: Yes! article and photos by Jan Long

I visited schools, at which I witnessed at first hand children eager to be educated, and hospitals and polio immunisation booths where the people desperately wanted to rid their country of the virus and displayed sheer joy at meeting Rotarians from around the globe. The week was soon over and I returned home with mixed feelings and time to reflect. I was humbled by what I'd seen, uplifted by being in a position to help save children from polio and astonished by the remarkable dignity and cheerfulness of people who, though they have nothing, overwhelmed us with their kindness and courtesy.

Migraine: way more than just a headache

M

igraines are an extremely debilitating condition, suffered by around one in every 5 women and one in every 15 men. We might think of migraines being severe headaches but although this might be true – they usually do involve a onesided headache – they are often accompanied with nausea, vomiting and increased sensitivity to light and/or sound. These attacks can last several days at a time so can be very disruptive to normal life, impacting both home and work life. Despite how common this condition is, we still don’t really know what causes migraines although there does seem to be a temporary change in the nerves, chemicals and blood vessels in the brain when someone is suffering. Traditional treatment Traditional treatment approaches generally rely on drugs, which are either taken continually, as a preventative, or when the symptoms start. These may be painkillers or medications that adjust the imbalances in the brain that cause migraines. Other prescriptions might be anti-seizure medication or something that’s used to treat high blood pressure. Acupuncture and migraine The NICE guidelines for migraines suggest that a course of up to 10 acupuncture sessions over a five to eight week period might be beneficial.

The consensus is that acupuncture is better than no treatment and is at least as good as preventative drug therapy. Acupuncture can help in the treatment of migraine by: • Providing pain relief - by stimulating nerves located in muscles and other tissues, acupuncture changes the processing of pain in the brain and spinal cord • Reducing inflammation - by promoting release of vascular and immunomodulatory factors • Reducing the degree of a special electrical wave in the brain associated with migraine • Modulating blood flow • Affecting serotonin levels in the brain Visit our blog for more information on the research. Why not give acupuncture a try and see if it can help you?

There is a good solid base of research into the effects of acupuncture on migraine sufferers.

pring is at last drawing near, and whilst we welcome the warmer weather and lighter evenings, this season can present new challenges to our pets. Fleas and Ticks External parasites can be found on pets all year round, but we do tend to see a surge of cases at the onset of spring. Flea bites can cause skin irritation, and once in the home require rigorous effort to be rid of them! Ticks are known to cause irritation at the site of their bite, and in some cases can transmit serious disease. You can ensure your pet is protected by using one of the recommended products dispensed from the surgery – be sure to visit us and chat to one of our vets or nurses about which product is best for your pet. Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Adding Colour to

YOUR GARDEN

T

hank you to those who called to say that the rose pruning tips in last month’s issue helped them. As promised, to cheer us up from the winter blues, this month I am looking at ways to add colour to your garden and how the right colour can make your garden look larger or smaller than it is. Bright colours can always make you feel more cheerful. In a garden this can be achieved in more ways than just using brightly flowering plants. Leaf

56

foliage can give the same effect. For example, Phormiuns are a great family of foliage plants whose colours range from white to red. Deciduous plants (plants that lose their leaves before winter) offer the wonderful autumn range as their leaves change colour. There are even more options, Silver Birch and Cornus for example have coloured stems for winter. Cotoneaster or Sorbus have a variety of coloured berries. When setting out a garden, creating a focal point to draw your eye down the garden - can add interest. If you choose to make your focal point using bright but dark colours such as red, this can make the object come towards you making the garden seem smaller. Use a lighter bright colour such as a pastel shade, then the object will seem further away giving the illusion the space is bigger. This effect can be achieved even without using plants. In some of my designs the illusion can be created with a thick post or sleeper, planted upright and painted. Mirrors can be used to reflect part of a garden to make it look larger. A secret doorway or window suggests there is more of interest beyond. This can work really well in a small space such as a courtyard. Some companies now sell mirrors designed for safe use in gardens. One area that most people overlook when building a garden from scratch is the option of lighting. This too can be used to create illusions and add interest at night time, not merely near the

house but to pick out your garden’s focal points using coloured lighting. For trees, green light looks good. For streams or ponds, a clear light works best. The photo to the right is of our garden entitled “Hansel and Gretel and the gingerbread house” created for a recent Malvern Spring Garden Show. As you can see, the colour of the Silver Birch and the red flowers of the Reddendum stand out above the other planting around it. We used a white variegated Phormium to stand out against the yellow feather-like effect of a Sambucus to give a striking colour without a flower in sight. The use of the lollypops and their different colours draws your eye down towards the house that is actually not that colourful. Adding a pocket of white to the planting picks out those areas I wanted to highlight to the judging panel. Garden Tasks for this month Remember to keep turning your compost and then re- sheet. February/March will be the time to start to use it on your beds. The bulbs you planted in November have started to

come up. I would always recommend taking photos of the area to record and remind you where the bulbs are. You may wish to put a new plant in that area, or add more bulbs the following year. If you have any fencing or wooden structure that need attention, now is the time to act as most plants are dormant and you can get behind them to repair or paint. It is also much easier to see what needs to be done when all herbaceous plants are cut down to ground level. Any replacement work can be done at the same time.

If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. raham Short, the Royal Engraver & micro artist took time out from his busy schedule to speak to the Ledbury & District U3A. Graham is probably best known, most recently, for his ‘invisible’ portrait of the Novelist Jane Austen on four new £5 notes, which were first issued on 13th September 2016 and which are said to attract a value of £50,000 each. Birmingham born & bred, and proud of it, Graham left school at 14, without any qualifications, and was apprenticed as an engraver in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, earning £2 17s 6d/week. He feels he owes his work ethic to his English Teacher – Mr Jennings, whose sound advice was – to do well in life, do things differently. Jasper Carrot was one of his class mates, as well as two members of ‘Black Sabbath’, so all in all a very successful year group! During his apprenticeship Graham mixed with and learned from many skilled craftsmen in the precious metal industry. He learned how to harden and temper pins over a naked flame to reduce their size so that he could use them to carry out his micro-engraving. This process could take up to 3 days. but once it was perfected, they would last for 9 to 10 months. To ensure his work was accurate he invested in a microscope which he purchased on ebay for £60. He works in the middle of the night when external vibration from traffic is at a minimum, and takes medication to slow his heart-rate to 20 beats a minute, so that with the help of a stethoscope, he can engrave between heart-beats; with further medical intervention around his eyes to prevent them from blinking. One of Graham’s most challenging achievements has been to engrave the words NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE on the cutting edge of a Wilkinson Sword razor blade; which is, incidentally, the motto of Saatchi & Saatchi, and appears on the front entrance above the steps of their main London Office in Charlotte Street.

GRAHAM SHORT the hand of a genius Graham makes the dyes for the letter head of the green portcullis on the House of Commons headed paper, the letter headed paper for the Royal Palaces, the Royal Wedding Invitations and the Royal box at Wimbledon. The illustrated presentation was concluded with the story of Graham once being told by a BBC Producer that the BBC was running a story on him, at the end of that evening’s News Bulletin (and finally). Graham rushed back from his Art Exhibtion, only to find he had been usurped by Prince Charles reading the weather forecast with the words ‘this rain (reign) will go on forever and the sun (son) will never get a look in. ’ Time will Tell! article by Jayne Wright

Exploring Herefordshire’s landscapes with Herefordshire Wildlife Trust . . .

Parkland & Wood Pasture automatically lead to the cessation of commoners rights.)

B

oth wood-pasture and parkland are characterised by large mature and veteran trees, standing singly or in small clusters in an area of grassland. They are typically grazed by livestock such as deer, sheep or cows. Wood pasture is a naturally occurring habitat but in the medieval period was valuable as it provided a supply of wood as well as grazing, and commoners often held rights to one or both resources. Wood pasture was also appropriated by the crown and landowners as hunting Chase (though this did not

60

Herefordshire’s parkland dates from the Norman Conquest through to the 19th century. They were deliberately created by landowners (often adapted from existing wood pasture) and were a key feature of many country estates. Landscaped parks are most commonly associated with the 18th Century and the designer ‘Capability’ Brown, when an idealised landscape of rolling grassland, magnificent trees and serene lakes surrounding one’s country house was the height of fashion. While some examples of these habitats are extensive, in many areas only small, but valuable, pockets remain where surrounding land has been cultivated or developed. Wildlife to spot The wonderful old trees which stand

within these support rare and specialised species including the stag beetle Lucanus cervus, a bark beetle Ernoporus tiliae, a wood boring beetle Gastrallus immarginatus, Moccas beetle Hypebaeus flavipes, orange-fruited elm lichen Caloplaca luteoalba, and the oak polypore Buglossoporous pulvinus. This habitat also provides for a host of other wildlife including woodland birds such as great spotted and green woodpeckers, robins and wrens. The ancient trees also provide habitat for bats, with species such as the noctule roosting in the cavities of aging trees. Where to find them There are wonderful examples of landscaped parkland at National Trust Croft Castle, and the National Trust Berrington Hall, created by Capability Brown as well as Moccas Park (no public access). Reserve Crow Wood & Meadow includes two hectares of wood pasture with some wonderful oak trees and small-leaved lime trees. Love your Parkland One reason that wood pasture and parkland are so valuable for wildlife is the standing and lying dead wood commonly found in them. You can partially replicate this at home by leaving piles of dead wood in corners of you garden which will attract a variety of invertebrates, lichen and fungi. If you have an old tree in your garden, leave it standing and consider pollarding it to extend its life. Why not become a Herefordshire Tree Warden and help to record and care for the veteran trees of Herefordshire’s landscapes? TIME TO WINE:

F

rance is renowned for producing many excellent products, which are exported, globally. French cuisine is very popular and the wines of France, that include champagnes and rosés, are regularly selected to grace many dining occasions, complementing cuisine and to enjoy on their own. Numerous awards are constantly received by French winemakers, that include both large production companies and smaller, family producers, too. Champagne Dumangin produces very impressive champagnes. Founded in 1884, the fifth generation now continues to astound. A great believer in uniqueness, Gilles Dumangin is a highly-respected grower in Ledbury Focus

Chigny-les-Roses. Blanc De Blancs Premium Single Vineyard Extra-Brut is an excellent production. Presented in an elegant, frosted white bottle, this premier Cru Cuvée is very popular and regularly enjoyed on special dining occasions and at numerous events. Extra-Brut Premier Cru Le Vintage is, again, impressively well-structured. Perfect to accompany numerous dishes of cuisine and has a good number of followers. L’ExtraBrut Premier Cru is a further exceptional champagne. This very dry production is much soughtafter and has many champagne connoisseur devotees. These are just a selection from their splendid range and all have a wonderful mouthfeel, plus extended palate sensation. The structure and elegance add to the

France

much-loved enjoyment of these superb champagnes. www.champagne-dumangin.fr Château Guilhem, family estate, has been in wine productions since the latter part of the 19th century and is my choice for organic rosé wines. I searched for very lightly-coloured wines, with just a hint of pink. Pot De Vin has a floral bouquet, that I find most inviting. The mouthfeel is very good, with pleasant notes of fruits, which continue through to the palate sensation. Prestige de Château Guilhem, again, impresses me. This pale-coloured rosé wine is very popular and regularly adorns many dining tables. An excellent mouthfeel follows on after the fruity nose and the palate enjoys extended pleasures of this production, from Languedoc. These wines are subtle in colour and excellent to pair with a lot of cuisine, including salads. Also, they are a great complement to al fresco dining, adding something ‘extra’ to an occasion. www.chateauguilhem.com As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley
