Volunteering Do you volunteer? I wonder why? Is it because no-one will pay for what you need to do? Is it because it is something you enjoy doing? Or is it because you genuinely and passionately want to help other people and contribute to a better society? Or are you simply bored with doing nothing? Research tells us that it can be any of the above and a myriad of other reasons, but all of them have one thing in common, the volunteer has to get something out of it. Volunteers are the ‘heart and soul’ of a voluntary or community organisation. They are often the ‘engine’ of delivery. In our case they support every programme we deliver to older people directly, or indirectly and we are always looking for more.

Our volunteers provide support in a myriad of ways. Have you ever thought how difficult or dangerous it is to change a lightbulb when you are 80? Of how challenging it is to cut your own toenails? Or how much time and understanding it takes to apply for a disability (blue) badge? Or what a difference a visit once a week makes to a lonely person? We are coming up to the time when people traditionally make New Year resolutions which often include considering doing some good in the world. Becoming a volunteer isn’t difficult. It simply requires some planning and commitment on your part. It is a genuinely win-win offer, not one you can buy in the supermarket but a badge you can

hen we are disturbed or tormented by distressing thoughts it might be helpful to remember that some feelings are not thoughts at all but develop as a result of exposure to the influences of toxins or foreign substances. ovember sees autumn turn to winter, the final leaves falling from the trees and often the first frosts. From sparkling white dawns to grey, dripping days and quickly dark evenings, the landscape appears in monochrome. Winter wildlife watching loses the bustle of spring, the buzz of summer and the crunch of

Fieldfares (Turdus pilaris) and redwings (Turdus iliacus) can be seen in flocks in arable fields as well as feasting on any unharvested fruit in Herefordshireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s orchards. The November full moon, this year falling on the 25th of the month, is associated with the return of winter migrants â&#x20AC;&#x201C; wetland birds including species of swan, goose and many waders which migrate

from colder, more northerly countries to overwinter here. This full moon is especially associated with the return of woodcock â&#x20AC;&#x201C; though these hard-to-spot and secretive birds are thought to be found in only very low numbers in Herefordshire so you would be very lucky to see one! Low-lying wetland areas are perfect for seeing returning wading birds this month. Snipe can be seen skulking around sodden meadows while flocks of resident lapwing descend from moorland to lowland pastures and are joined by thousands more which migrate to Britain

Lapwing are now a red list species and snipe are on the amber list so conserving their favoured wetland habitat is very important. One of our best nature reserves to visit to spot some of these species is The Sturts – a collection of small meadows towards Eardisley in the West of the county. Lying in the flood plain of the River Wye, the damp pasture often floods during the winter so wellies are a must if you visit. Snipe are regular visitors to the reserve while curlew and lapwing, mallard and teal ducks have also been sighted here as well as the scarcer jack snipe. crucial. The last thing you want to do is put a 100 foot tree in your back garden that ends up being too close to the house.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

In this November’s issue I am looking at Choosing a Tree for your garden. You have to do some research to see what sort of tree you are after and then if it will grow in the sort of conditions you have: do you have clay soil or well drained, sun spot or shade. • do you want an evergreen (one that holds its leaves) or deciduous tree (one that loses its leaves)? • are you after one for autumn colours or one for berries for the winter? When you have chosen the kind of tree you are looking for, you need to consider height. There are a lot of trees out there that produce an interesting bark or other features, but the height is 28

Once you have chosen your tree and it is in the right position, i.e. full sun, part sun or shade, not too close to the house, doesn’t grow to 100 foot, not too invasive and you can create the right kind of planting underneath it, then it is time to go to a garden centre or nursery to look for your tree. There is a brilliant book called “A Plant Finder” and once you have looked out your species, this will tell you which nurseries in the country grow or stock it. The internet is another good way of finding a reputable supplier. I always recommend going to look at your tree first. Some Pointers to Looking at Your Tree • has it got weeds growing around the pot? If it has it might mean that it has been in the nursery for a long time. This is not a good thing as it could be pot bound. • can you lift it up or is it rooted into the gravel or the weed matting on which it is sitting? • does it look healthy? If it has been pot bound it might have been there for a long time and hasn’t had enough water; the leaves may not be looking as lush and green as they could be. This might be the time to leave the tree if you are not happy with it.

â&#x20AC;˘ does it have a straight stem and evenly balanced branches - some trees that weep may not. Staking a Tree Try to stake your tree with the stake at the back away from where the tree is mainly viewed. There are a few options for staking: an upright single stake, a diagonal single stake or two stakes with a cross rail - this will depend on the tree. A large tree would need the two-stake option; a feathered tree (one with branches to the ground) would need a cross stake to miss the branches, but most need just one upright stake at the back of the tree. Once the stake is in, use a tree tie (buckle tie) at the top of the stake so no branches can rub on it and the tree cannot move in the wind. I would recommend tacking a nail through the tie into the stake, which will make sure the tie does not slip down. Check this every year because it will need to be slackened as the trunk gets wider. Planting When planting your tree you need to dig a hole twice the size of the pot your tree is in - this will

ensure that the new tree roots are growing into prepped soil rather than the edge of compacted soil. If you have a very large pot and you want to get the hole right, use your spade to measure the size of the pot and you can measure this up to the hole. Mix the dug out soil with bone-meal, blood, fish and bone, or just compost, depending on your soil and what your chosen tree likes. Fill the hole with some of this soil/compost mix so that when the tree goes into the hole,the base of the tree is at the same level as it was in the pot - you can kill a tree by planting it too deep. This is now a good time to get your stake in and check your tree is upright from both the front and the side (do not tie at this point). I would then recommend watering in the plant by filling the hole with water and leaving to soak in; then back fill and use your heel to firm in. Now tie the stake and remove any labels, as labels in high winds can damage branches. Then sit back and admire. Next month I will look at creating movement in your garden.

Stinking Bishop harles Martell began making Stinking Bishop cheese from the milk of his herd of Gloucestershire cattle, to increase awareness of the breed, which had previously been near to extinction. The remarkable smell of the cheese is in the rind, which is washed in perry (the name for cider made from pears) made from the Stinking Bishop variety of pear. The pear was named after an infamous Ledbury farmer, Frederick Bishop, nicknamed Stinking Bishop, who was born in the mid-19th century and known for his drunken temper. One story is that he blasted a kettle that was on his stove at home, as it annoyed him. He is reputedly buried in the churchyard of the Parish Church of Colwall, a village between Ledbury and Malvern. Stinking Bishop cheese, despite its alarming name and smell, is mild-flavoured and quite delicious. The smell arises from bacterial action on the perry, soaked into the rind.

Bowen for Digestive and Respiratory health by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DipM

In this article I will share with you some information concerning how I treat digestive and respiratory problems with The Bowen Technique. I will also talk a little about how these two issues can often be linked and about what symptoms people experience as a result of imbalance in these areas. Diet & Lifestyle Clearly both diet and lifestyle are important factors in establishing and maintaining good digestive health. A diet that contains the right nutrients for your unique needs is vitally important for vibrant health and wellbeing. Getting enough hydration is also vitally important, as is taking regular exercise that works for your body type. Another very important factor here concerns minimising stress and inflammation as much as possible. This factor could be an article in itself! Taking steps to reduce the stress you experience in your life will serve to help your health on so many levels including better digestion and absorption. 32

You are what you absorb Forget about being â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you are what you eat, in reality, you are what you can absorb. It might be that you are eating very healthily and doing everything right most of the time, but still your digestive problems persist. This could be to do with absorption and the way your body works as per your own unique physiology. Some people for example simply cannot digest certain foods. Some people may be able to digest certain foods with the aid of a specific digestive enzyme. We are all very unique in terms of our body biochemistry. As I hinted at above, digestive health can also be linked to stress and/or emotional problems.

The Bowen digestive/ respiratory procedure This procedure can assist the body to start working at its optimum in terms of digestive and respiratory health at a physiological level. The procedure also helps the body relax and re-balance and people often report improvements with emotional and stress related problems including depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Stress and emotional issues can often be at the root cause of both digestive and respiratory related symptoms. I have found Bowen to be invaluable when treating an individualâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s digestive problems from a physiological perspective and also in addressing stress or emotional imbalance that might be causing other physical problems.

The procedure can also often kick-start sluggish digestion, and metabolism significantly. The procedure is done in two parts: The first part of the procedure is applied to the patients back on the thoracic area over the erector spinae muscles on both sides of the body. Whilst doing this we bend the leg slightly which helps to lock the thoracic vertebrae and gives a release in the respiratory cavity. Often people experience a sense of expansion and feel as though they can breathe more freely after performing this. The second part of this procedure is applied on the front of the body. One finger is placed on the epigastrium while gentle moves are made on either side of the body on the rectus abdominis on the rib cage. Often whilst these “moves” are being applied the digestive system starts to wake up and make noises! Problems that have responded well to this procedure In practice I use this procedure a lot and I have found that a multitude of symptoms and issues seem to respond well to it. This procedure is well indicated when the following issues are present: Ledbury Focus

• Respiratory symptoms » Breathing difficulties » Asthma » Bronchitis » Emphysema » Colds » Hay fever » Coughs • Gastro-intestinal symptoms; » Abdominal discomfort i.e. colic, hiatus hernia and indigestion » Bloating » Heart burn » Nausea » Malabsorption issues • Liver, pancreatic or gallbladder problems • Diaphragm problems and tightness • Stress, shock, anxiety, grief The Traditional Chinese Medicine connection In Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM for short, the Large Intestine and Lung meridians are coupled or connected. Often the symptoms that present when we look to treat with the digestive/respiratory procedure are interrelated and impact upon both Large Intestine and Lung function. We see the parallel of TCM reflected in the Bowen Digestive/Respiratory procedure as this one procedure impacts on these two areas of health.

Another interesting point to note here, is that in terms of TCM, practitioners look at Lung and Digestive health when treating skin disorders. Often imbalance in those two areas has an impact on the skin or manifests (presents) itself in the skin. This would be another indicator that using the Bowen Digestive/ Respiratory procedure may be helpful for an individual.

ne of the pleasures of producing the Ledbury Focus is getting to meet some of the wonderful advertisers and learning about their businesses. Meeting Tom and Ros Farrell of Farrell’s Framings was no exception.

We met at their lovely house in Camers Green, where they have their workshop - a veritable treasure trove of fabulous frames, mirrors and artwork. Up till then, in my ignorance, I had always thought of picture frames as something bought from a hardware shop and used to make it easier to hang a picture! Tom, a former financial advisor, said that he decided to buy the necessary equipment to get started because Ros, a highly accomplished and talented artist, wanted him to start framing her pictures. This proved so successful, that the business just naturally grew from there, and together they now produce the most beautiful works of art, framing anything and everything imaginable. Something else I wasn’t previously aware of is that the framing industry, like the fashion industry, has specific seasons and with each

season, comes new ideas and designs. Big bank’s sale of wills and probate means local help needed

he sale of a banking giants’ wills and probate work to a national firm means local people need to act for peace of mind that their will is in order, warns leading Ledbury law firm DF Legal. Senior Partner, John Daniels said the sale of HSBC’s wills and probate to an organisation called Simplify Channel Ltd will cause concern for a number of people in the region. “In our work as experts in wills and probate we have advised many people who have had wills drafted by such organisation’s and in most cases the wills appoint the bank as the executors to act on the will when the person has died,” he said. “Clients of HSBC have been sent a letter giving them the option to sign what is known as a codicil to

appoint Simplify or another executor of their choice instead of HSBC, or to inform HSBC that the will is no longer considered to be valid,” he said. Clients were sent the letter earlier in the summer and Simplify will not be able to act as executors unless wills are changed.

This month's TIPS Last month at home we installed a waste disposal unit to the sink, I must admit it’s not a cheap gadget, but I must add it has become an essential part of our home, due to bin collections being fortnightly I struggle with our household waste, I have pets and waste in the bins is a struggle. Now it’s simple, we dispose of waste into the sink, every so often we turn the machine on with the cold tap and then the peelings and unused food is broken down and swilled away my bins now do not smell. We’ve had a busy summer lobbying the County Council about the future of our Library. As I write, we await the outcome of their consultation on their proposed budget cuts. Once this information is available, all the county’s library user groups will be taking part in discussions to find ways to run our libraries sustainably. But we are not just about lobbying. The LLDG have also been arranging events. September saw the first of 3 talks from Rob Elliott and his partner Sally Dean, on the subject of Food. The last talk in this series is on 16th November, with tickets available from the Library (£6 to include light refreshments). Back by popular demand, November sees the second of what we intend to be our annual quiz. The Library Live Quiz, will be held on Friday 27th November in the Feathers at 7pm. Tickets are £7 per individual or £24 for a team of 4. Last year was a sell out and the evening was a huge success. If you’d like to join us, don’t leave it too late to buy your tickets! Our next event will be an evening with Quentin Letts on Friday 22nd January. More details on this will be available shortly. Success of the October Mop Fair Article and photographs by Jan Long

Crowds stood in the high street of Ledbury to watch as Mayor Annette Crowe cut the white ribbon tethered at the Waltzers and declared the annual October Mop Fair open. She was then presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers before touring the fair, lead by the well-known figure of Town Crier, Bill the Bell Turburfield. There were sideshows, eateries, and gentle roundabouts for the very young and breathtaking whirligigs for the not so young bringing shrieks of terrified laughter. Ledbury streets were transformed into a vibrant colourful and exciting place for the people of Ledbury to enjoy themselves. The history of the Mop Fair goes back hundreds of years. It began in the 1400s and years and traditionally after travelling the countryside, ends the year in Stratford. People would line up waiting to see if they could be hired for work, often wearing tassels or â&#x20AC;&#x153;mopsâ&#x20AC;? denoting their skills, so it could be supposed that this wonderful event was the precursor to the job centre or employment office!

The signs that your pet is fearful, may include: • trembling or shaking • clinging to owners • barking excessively • cowering and hiding behind furniture • trying to run away • soiling the house • pacing and panting • refusing to eat The most caring thing for us to do as owners is to comfort and reassure our pets when they are demonstrating fearful behaviours, however, sadly in this situation it can make the problem worse. The best thing we can to help our pets is to be prepared in advance. There are a number of ways, that we can help to east the stress levels, including: • provide a covered den for your pet to hide away in • keep doors, windows and cat flaps closed after dusk Ledbury Focus

Helping your pets stay calm and safe during firework season • take your dog for a walk well before fireworks are likely to begin • have the curtains drawn and lights on - this will help to mask the flashes • have the television or radio on slightly louder than normal this will help to block out the bangs • there are numerous chemical methods of improving your dog or cats stress levels during the firework season. ln dogs we use plug-in diffusers called Adaptil, or Adaptil collars, which need to be applied at least a few days before the firework season. ln cats a very effective pheromone de-stress aid is Feliway diffuser which is also a plug-in.

Ledbury Bowling Club - a short photo essay

ince moving to Ledbury in the spring I've walked past the Ledbury Bowling Club most days while walking the dogs or on the way into town. Impressed by the beautiful green and the players in their immaculate whites under sunny blue summer skies, I approached the club President Chris Bloise to ask if I could take some photographs, and was unequivocally told that I was welcome to do so at any time. Everyone at Ledbury Bowling Club was open and friendly to me all the time, and their friendliness was matched by their passion for the game. I was given plenty of encouragement to come out to try my hand at playing and patient instructions on the rules of bowling.

While taking these photographs I was gradually struck by the seriousness with which bowling was taken. Despite everyone's good humour on and off the green bowling is serious, and a game of millimetres. In my short photo essay I try to convey that almost contradictory sense of consequence with which the game, and practices, are taken, versus the warm, relaxing sunny skies of summer under which it's played. Pork with Lentils Serves 2 2 pork fillets 2 cloves garlic, sliced 2 sage leaves 2 thin-sliced rashers streaky bacon 300g Puy lentils, rinsed 2 pieces of celery, diced 2 small carrots, diced 2 shallots, diced 100g diced bacon 100ml chicken stock 100ml white wine 100ml double cream 2 tsps Dijon mustard

• Wrap the pork in the bacon and roast in the oven for 35 minutes. • Wash the lentils. Saute the diced vegetables for 5 minutes before adding some diced bacon. • Add the lentils and the chicken stock and simmer for 30 minutes. • When the pork is done, remove to a warm serving dish and slice.

• Heat oven to 180C

• Deglaze the roasting tin with white wine, add the cream and mustard and reduce slightly.

• Make some slits in the pork and insert slices of garlic and sage leaves.

• Serve the sliced pork with the lentils and mustard sauce, and some mashed potato, if desired.

Grease and line a 20x30cm baking tray. 2 tsps baking powder 310g plain flour 60g cocoa powder 200g caster sugar 175g runny honey 250ml vegetable oil 1 tspn vanilla extract 125ml milk 4 egg yolks 220g raw beetroot, peeled and grated 4 egg whites, stiffly whipped into peaks 50g flaked almonds, toasted 62

• Mix all the ingredients together well, except the egg whites. • Once thoroughly mixed, gently fold in egg whites. • Tip into prepared tray and bake in preheated oven for 35-45 minutes. • Remove from oven and cool for five minutes. • Turn out onto wire tray and ice with your favourite chocolate icing. • Top with flaked almonds and cut into squares.

Village Green Wins National Prize

Community Action Ledbury and the Pool Piece Village Green Working Group are the winners of the "Recreation" category in this year's Biffa Awards. The news has been welcomed by Wellington Heath parishioner, Peter Constantine: "I think this is terrific news, and hats off to the guys who have worked so hard to make it happen and continue to work hard." The Pool Piece Village Green Working Group, together with Community Action Ledbury,

were named as winner of the Recreation category for their Pool Piece ‘Village Green’ Improvement Scheme project on 1st October. Competing against other Recreation projects from across the UK, they received £1,500 in prize money, which they can use to further develop their project. A Biffa Awards spokesman said: "This community project has turned an overgrown site with bad access into a real asset to the village and its residents." This year more than 240 completed projects competed to win a prize in one of five categories, including Community Buildings, Recreation, Small Grants,

Cultural Facilities and Rebuilding Biodiversity. The theme for the Awards was ‘Building Communities. Transforming Lives.’ Gillian French, Biffa Award Programme Manager, said: “The Biffa Awards are a unique opportunity to celebrate and reward the dedicated people who are delivering some of the excellent projects we have funded. Police & Partners Contact Centre arrives in Herefordshire

he first mobile Police & Partners Contact Centre has arrived in Herefordshire and will go into use immediately across the county. The new vehicle, funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia, will be used by local Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT) and a wide range of partners including Herefordshire County Council, to visit town centres and villages in rural communities on specific days and times. Police & Partners Contact Centre It will provide more opportunities for residents to speak directly to officers and other local agencies, and will be equipped with a range of crime prevention advice on a range of topics, particularly rural crime, which is an ongoing priority for both the PCC and the force.

The branding has been designed to be easily recognisable and says to people living and working in rural areas that Rural Matters to police and their partners. It will enable people to meet their local policing team and our partners within the community safety partnership , find out what is happening in their area and get the latest crime prevention advice and information on a range of issues from spotting cyber scams to protecting themselves against rogue traders.

We have developed a strategy and made sure funding was available, and now we are starting to see the real progress being made as a result.

"We have listened to what local people have told us and we want to improve the way people living in our more rural and isolated communities can see us, meet us and tell us what is happening. Instead of expecting people to come to our meetings, along with our partners we will go to more places where people come together, for example market days and community events." 66

West Mercia Deputy Police & Crime Commissioner Barrie Sheldon said: "The people of West Mercia identified rural crime as a priority for them, and that makes it a priority for us and the force.

We now have pro-active teams in each of the five policing areas who are engaging with both rural and business communities. It will provide extra police visibility and reassurance, and being mobile, of course it allows the police, and others, to have that presence right across different areas. t’s as if the world has been painted by a secret artist. His palette is rich for he has covered the trees in hues of gold and garnet red and when the sun shines they sparkle, the gems of the year’s swan-song. There are diamonds too in this finale, hanging on the gossamer threads woven by spiders. Earlier in the autumn it was the heavy dew that shone on the spider’s webs, now it’s the droplets of November’s fog drenching and highlighting them against the mist. There is beauty out there to be savoured, even on the dankest of days. I’ve a spider living in my gate. Its home is in the top rail where a hole allows access to a hollow bar. The spider has been there for a long time and I’ve the greatest respect for it. Not just because of its ability to survive the rigours of living in a gate opened and closed regularly with a jolt that surely would cause concussion in any other creature, but also because of its tenacity. Its lair is near the gate’s latch so every time someone puts their hand between the rails to lift the catch the web, which has been so cleverly and arduously woven, is broken. Often, there is a feast of insects caught in the sticky trap and one wonders if they are retrievable as they hang, forlorn, from the broken strands. The web is broken daily, and daily a new food catcher is spun; no wonder Robert the Bruce was inspired by a spider to never give up. There are lessons for us all in the world of the arachnid. Spiders, for some, are the stuff of horror movies, but these creatures haunting our baths, requiring regular rescue, and lurking in the darkest corners of our homes, are an important part of our ecosystems on every continent except Antartica. They live in nearly every kind of habitat, even the hottest. Spiders are important predators of insects and prey for an enormous number of animals. They are the gardeners friend, the ally of horticulturists and agriculturists. They control insect population preventing us from being overrun by more unpleasant creepy crawlies; it has been estimated that in the UK spiders eat more than the weight of the human population in insects a year. Their silk is the strongest natural material, inspiring mechanical engineering and research into medical uses. 74

So spare a thought for the spider before squashing it, because this diamond geezer really is one of our best friends.

A flight from Melbourne to Brisbane was unexpectedly diverted to Sydney. The flight attendant explained that there would be a short delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft the plane would re-board in 50 minutes. Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was blind. One of the other passengers had noticed this lady as he walked by and could tell she was blind because her Seeing Eye Dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her through-out the entire flight. The lady was obviously a regular on this particular flight because the pilot approached her, and calling her by name, said, “Kathy, we'll be in Sydney for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?” The blind lady replied, “No thanks, but maybe Max would like a walk.” Picture this: All the passengers in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a Seeing Eye Dog ... The pilot was even wearing dark glasses! People scattered. They not only tried to change planes, but they even tried to change airlines! True story ...
