Autumn is well and truly with us again – the days are getting shorter, there’s a definite nip in the air and the trees are changing colour … a truly beautiful time of year. Time to get out your winter woollies and stoke up the log fires - if you’re lucky enough to have a real fireplace! All of which of course means that winter – and Christmas – are not far off now. Christmas markets and events and workshops are starting this month, in particular don't miss the Christmas light switch on and the Dickensian Market in New Street, both on 26th November. But before we get to Christmas, we’ve got bonfire night to look forward to, and West Mercia Police have some safety tips on bonfires and fireworks, so have a look at these and make sure you have a great time, without any disasters! I'd like to say a quick word of thanks to those of you who are sending me details of your events keep them coming, and if anyone else has an event or special occassion they'd like to advertise, please give me a call or email me the details. That’s all from me for now, so until next month, stay happy and healthy.
Betty

hough there are variables, the Framing trade generally sees upcoming new products and trends start in the Autumn of each year - they closely monitor and reflect our innate and sometimes evolutionary changes in both Season, fashion and often, the general mood of our times. This year we have seen an expansion on the year before, with more mouldings reflecting different textures than perhaps we have seen previously. Of particular note to us are a few ranges of these frames made from a veneer of real stone, and also a marble effect - both making excellent frames for kitchens or bathrooms - and they make wonderful mirrors too. We also have an excellent selection of frames with the impression of 'stitching' along the moulding, as well as the beautiful quilted/sateen textures emulating bridal wear - obviously for brides, but also for other special occasions. Framing your Creative Ideas - Specialised Framing (Box Frames, Shadow Boxes, Multi-Aperture Framing and Individually made Mirrors) We specialise in making things individually just for you - protecting and framing projects of a creative nature and design. Tom spends time with you to evaluate your needs and requirements, working out how to help you both protect and present your individual works. There has been a sea change culturally as many of us are now making beautiful creations of Art and Craftwork, we are now looking at the potential of framing a huge variety of different subjects, objects and creations.

Free Home Energy & Benefit Checks
P
eople in Herefordshire face multiple challenges and barriers to maintaining their health and well-being, and dealing with fuel poverty. Financial pressures associated with living in rural areas, such as costs for transport and domestic heating, mean some households spend more to achieve the same standards of living as equivalent households living in urban areas. Age UK Hereford & Localities is pleased to announce it will be working with Marches Energy Agency (MEA) to support older people to keep safe and warm by offering two free services From mid October 2016 through to mid May 2017, we will be offering free home energy checks and free benefit checks. Home Energy Checks MEA will be carrying out the home energy checks. The aim is to provide practical energy efficiency information and expert advice to older people. The project will enable older people to change energy use behaviour and benefit from small practical measures which could potentially reduce their energy bills whilst remaining warm and well.
Home energy checks will include: • A thorough assessment of the clients circumstances, usage of energy, hot water system and insulation. • Give basic advice on how to keep warm and save energy. • Supply and install simple energy efficiency measures (draught excluders, letter box brushes, radiator foil, sockets timers and other items). • Help you to apply for Warm Homes Discount and the Priority Services Register. • Review your energy tariff and payment method. Benefit Checks Age UK Hereford & Localities will be offering free benefit checks. Our Information & Advice team will ensure that you are receiving all the benefits to which you are entitled and also review your current benefits, making sure that you are receiving the correct amounts. They will help with benefits such as: Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payments, Carers Allowance, State Pension, Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefit.

Functional Reflex Therapy (FRT) at Ledbury Primary School with Sara Valve MAR
Feet First Reflexology
A
s part of the framework to support children’s health and wellbeing at Ledbury Primary School I am employed, as a fully qualified reflexologist, to deliver Functional Reflex Therapy (FRT). This therapy was created in 2012 by Lorraine Senior, a reflexologist and special needs teacher who devised a combination of relaxation techniques, drawn from reflexology, called the ‘Rainbow Relaxation Routine’. This unique approach was developed over a number of years, by Lorraine, as she delivered regular reflexology, as a timetabled therapy, in the education system. The feedback from receivers, parents and staff was so positive that it became obvious to her that she needed to share her ideas. An integral part of FRT is a ‘Tool Kit’ bag that encourages the use of objects of reference, symbols and photographs that may help promote communication. It can be used to keep resources and equipment together and gives the receiver some responsibility for the session, as they can prepare and tidy away. Even though FRT had been conceived with special needs children in mind the wonderful concepts at the centre of this therapy can, in fact, be used and adapted to suit any age and situation. It helps 14
pupils with their preparation for ongoing activities and learning throughout the day, as feeling calm and relaxed generally improves concentration and focus. For over a year I have been using the ‘Rainbow Relaxation Routine’ and ‘Tool Kit’ bag with children throughout the school. The range of support this therapy may help with is varied and specific to the needs of the individual children. However, the improvements that have been observed by parents, carers, teachers, support staff and myself, from the children receiving regular weekly sessions are: • relaxation ‘in the moment’ • reduction in anxiety • improvement in mood and confidence • increased social interactions and communication • deepening relationships and trust • being able to express emotions At the beginning and end of each session I give the children a number of choices from the ‘Tool Kit’ bag. For example, choices of music, blankets, massage wax. At the end of the routine I usually offer a choice of two toys to explore. This aids the gradual resurfacing from the relaxed state before returning to class. Breathing techniques used during the sessions

also aid relaxation and help the children to better understand the workings of their bodies. The whole experienced is filled with mutual respect, in a calm, safe, relaxing environment. To help the children manage their feelings I share self-help hand reflexology techniques with them. These may reduce feelings of anxiety, sadness, anger or even help induce sleep at night. If young children can begin to understand what feeling relaxed really means and learn strategies to help themselves achieve this state of mind, I believe, it’s a lesson well learnt, a life skill. I am available to give workshops in the ‘Rainbow Relaxation Routine’ for parents, carers and family members and regular reflexology treatments. It's all Change Photos and article by Geraldine Holbourn
T
he last of the summer migrants have gone. Or have they? As winters become increasingly mild more black caps are staying and chiff chaffs were still in the garden in October. And others, are staying later. Plants and animals are responding to our changing climate. Who can blame these birds for lingering during balmy, Indian summer days. Migrating birds have been staying longer for the past 60 years, some arriving earlier in spring. Next year it will be ten years since I started writing these articles and in that time I’ve watched the seasons shift. The first tang of autumn is sooner than it was, winter is hardly a season at all. This change in our weather is disrupting many forms of wildlife. Animals such as hedgehogs are often encouraged out of hibernation too soon, only to get caught out by a cold snap. Bees are hatching earlier in
Ledbury Focus
warmer springs, causing a mismatch between the pollinators and the pollinated, especially with those that have evolved together over millennia. The great sequences of life are now unreliable. Food may not be available when animals need it. As wildlife tries to adapt there are winners and losers. The cuckoo is arriving only to find that many of the birds whose nests they rely on have already begun breeding leaving the cuckoo high and dry. Yet greater spotted woodpeckers have increased by 368 per cent. What can we do? At first glance it would seem very little. On a grand scale we know all about energy consumption, recycling, reducing our carbon footprints. But what about the little things we could do to help? We probably can’t do anything to help specific flower/bee relationships but we can look out for hedgehogs, feed them when their natural food is scarce. We can feed the birds all year round,
we can plan our gardens for all year round pollen rich plants. It might mean a little research, but what a good way to spend winter evenings, planning for a garden rich in bees and butterflies. Traditional gardening or traditional plants may not be the way to go, but urban gardens are important in the battle against climate change and maintaining biodiversity. They wont replace natural habitats, but they will complement them and it’s becoming more apparent that many declining species, such as frogs, song thrush and hedgehogs are now more abundant in gardens than in low intensity farmland. What you and I can do IS important, IS worthwhile. If we garden for wildlife in our little plots, we will all contribute to saving our biodiversity upon which the natural balance of our world depends.

OUR SPECIES of the month:
Spindle
S
pindle is a small, shrubby tree found in Britain and much of Europe. In the wild, its presence is an indicator of an ancient woodland – an area which has been wooded since around 1600.
This year, the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust is running a new series taking a closer look at one key species of flora or fauna each month. For November, we are looking at spindle or Euonymus europaeus . . .
28
Spindle grows to up to twenty foot tall. It’s often grown as an ornamental plant in gardens, due to the wonderful colours of its autumn leaves and unusual berries. The deciduous leaves, which grow opposite each other on the stem, have a finely serrated edge and pointed ends. They are dark green in summer turning yellow and deep reddish-purple in autumn. In late spring, rather inconspicuous late spring, flowers appear which
are a yellowish green, with four petals, growing in groups of three to eight together. The autumnal berries are bright pink and split when ripe into four lobes, revealing the orange seeds. Although these berries are very attractive to look at, they are poisonous and should not be touched. Ingestion can result in liver and kidney damage, and even death. In myth and legend, the spindle tree is said to symbolise creative inspiration and wisdom. Due to the fact that spindle wood is very hard, fine-grained and can be cut to a sharp point, it was used in the past for making spindles for spinning wool (whence comes its name,) knitting needles and skewers.
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: betty@grapevinepublications.co.uk
Events at Herefordshire Wildlife Trust November 2016
The wood is also burned to make highquality artists’ charcoal and the vividly coloured fruit can be used to make pink, yellow and orange fabric dye. Oil from the tree is used in soap making and a substance obtained from the roots is used to create a type of rubber used in electrical insulation. Where to see it Spindle grows on the edges of woods, in hedges and on gentle slopes. It tends to thrive in nutrient- rich, chalky and saltpoor soils. How to help spindle to thrive Spindle can be bought from garden centres and grown in your garden, but please be aware that it’s potentially poisonous to cats and dogs if the berries are eaten in quantity. Herefordshire wildflower nursery PlantWild (www.plantwild.co.uk) have young spindle trees available for purchase. Get in touch If you spot a spindle tree – or any other species - please do let us know! You can submit records online at www. herefordshirewt.org, email them to records@herefordshirewt.co.uk or write to Lower House Farm, Ledbury Road, Hereford, HR1 1UT. Ledbury Focus

m o r f s d r a c t s Po Hi, I’m Sandie
I
live in Ledbury and would like to introduce you to a series of sixpostcard sized stories that I’ve written. They are all inspired by places, or events that happened in or around our beautiful town. The first five stories move through history, recording a moment in time from an ancient prehistoric past to the nineteenth century. The last postcard is different. It’s not set in the past. It simply asks a question of us all about the sort of future that we will create. I don’t really know what started me thinking about writing the ‘postcards,’ except that we are fortunate, I think, to live in Ledbury. From our town, in every direction that we travel, we are surrounded by beautiful countryside and a rich history.
34
the Past Midsummer Hill – Sulicena’s Story
To introduce the first postcard, Midsummer Hill is situated in the range of the Malvern Hills that runs along the HerefordshireWorcestershire border. It is the site of a prehistoric hill fort and was a place of importance to the Dobunni, a Celtic tribe who lived in the area before the Roman invasion of Britain. Although our ancient ancestors may feel remote to us now, when we walk the hills we are literally walking in their footsteps. To use our imaginations, a young girl called Sulicena could have walked where we walk today and, if not, someone like her almost certainly did.

All the Fun of the Fair! article & photographs by Jan Long
Ledbury’s Mayor, Debbie Baker officially opened the annual Mop Fair along with the Town’s carnival Princesses and a parade led by Bill the Bell Turberfield, the town crier in his regalia. Visiting Mayors from Ross and Bromyard were also present, along with other officials representing organisations, including our hardworking police officers. Crowds gathered and soon were filling the variety of thrilling rides such as the waltzer whilst Mayor Debbie opted for a fun ride on the dodgems with Bromyard’s Mayor, Fred Clarke at the wheel. Stallholders were busy selling chips, burgers, candyfloss and a range of other delicious foods ensuring everyone was happy at this special event. The Rotary Club bear, Harrison whose aim is to promote the eradication of polio worldwide, enjoyed the privilege of accompanying Mayor Debbie on her parade and on the exciting dodgems. In declaring the Mop Fair Open, Town Mayor Debbie said she was delighted that this historic tradition had endured through the centuries and was now a modern attraction to people of all generations.

any pets become anxious and frightened when fireworks are going off. Some become extremely distressed and unlike us, they do not understand why there are loud bangs and flashes outside. The signs include: • Trembling or shaking • Clinging to owners • Barking excessively • Cowering and hiding behind furniture • Trying to run away • Soiling the house • Pacing and panting • Refusing to eat The most natural thing for us to do as owners is to comfort and reassure our pets when they are demonstrating fearful behaviours, however, sadly in this situation it can make the problem worse. The best thing we can to help our pets is to be prepared in advance.

I
t is with regret that we have decided against continuing with the Scouts’ Christmas post. Over the last few years the number of people using our service has diminished to a point where it is no longer practical to continue. We put this down mainly to modern technology such as bespoke online card companies and social media. The money raised from this venture helped to boost the Scout Groups finances so we are now continuing with other fund-raising ventures. You will see the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers helping out with bag packing at Tesco’s on a Sunday before Christmas, The Explorer unit will run the Christmas tree collection on the 7th January. We would like to thank all of the people of Ledbury and the surrounding areas for your continued support of our fund-raising events as it gives us some revenue to spend on activities across all the sections of the group helping our young people to get a taste for the adventure that is Scouting.

Leading Fantasy artist Lisa Parker delights Ledbury W
orld-renowned mystery and magic artist, and product designer Lisa Parker was the guest of honour at Enchant & Allure in New Street Ledbury on Saturday 17th September. The day was buzzing with excitement as well over 200 people came to meet Lisa and chat with her about her aweinspiring work. From young to old, local to further a field including Birmingham, Cheltenham and Oxford, people came to meet her and get one of her gorgeous, newly released 2017 calendars signed. Signings took place in the 50
Grand Room, which was dressed entirely with Lisa’s work and short listed entries for the art competition run in her honour. It’s easy to understand how Lisa’s work inspires so much acclaim. From a young age, she has always had an obsession with art. Born in Devon she studied Natural History Illustration at the Bournemouth and Poole Institute of Art & Design and has exhibited her work in many prestigious locations including The Mall galleries in London and Madison Avenue in New York.
While Lisa’s first artistic passion was wildlife, her work has successfully ventured into the realm of witchcraft and fantasy with her much loved designs appearing on numerous products all over the world. Lisa’s unique and seamless infusion of perfect animal form with mystical overtures has rightfully placed her as one of the leading international fantasy artists of our time. An art competition was held for the children of Ledbury schools to create a fantasy picture to be judged by Lisa on the day of her visit. Several hundred children took part in this competition,

with entries from the John Masefield High School, Ledbury Primary School, Bosbury Primary School and Bromesberrow St Mary’s Primary School. Category winners were chosen from each of the schools, with Lisa Parker dream catchers and journals awarded as prizes. Lisa was overwhelmed by the time, effort and talent put in by the children of Ledbury, and she kindly awarded one of her fabulous 3D bookmarks to all who participated in the competition. Lisa also relayed her gratitude to the art teachers at the schools involved with the competition and signed one of her calendars for each of them. The first prize for the Primary schools went to 10-year-old Daniel Constantinescu from Ledbury Primary School, and the first prize for John Masefield High School went to Megan McRae, each of whom received a beautiful Lisa Parker figurine. Officially welcomed by Ledbury Town Mayor, Debbie Baker, Lisa’s charm and Art captivated everyone that she met at the New Street emporium, Enchant & Allure. Councillor Baker stated, “It is wonderful to have such a renowned artist visit our town and I am especially proud and delighted with the number and quality of entries from our local school children for the art competition. This will be a day that we will fondly remember for some time, and I too have been very excited to meet her!” Ledbury Focus
Lisa discussed her work and new projects with her ardent admirers, and even brought with her the prototypes for her new figurines, A Brush With Magic, The Witching Hour, and Times Up which are due to be released later this year. She also brought her beautifully designed and eagerly awaited umbrellas that will be available to buy imminently. Lisa’s colouring book is also causing a lot of excitement among her younger fans; this too will soon be released. Enchant & Allure were honoured to introduce Lisa’s weekly prize for her famous
‘Dog Lottery” on her Facebook page. People comment on her post choosing 3 numbers between 1 and 10 and her beautiful dog Willow chooses 3 numbered balls. This is always fun to watch, especially when Willow plays with the balls! As for the future, Lisa is working on several new designs and product lines. Her schedule is very busy with numerous overseas visits and new product launches booked. Article by Helen Moody of Enchant & Allure Photos by Mike Ambury of Grapevine Publications

Failed Physcial ... I went to the doctor for my annual checkup. The nurse started with certain basics. "How much do you weigh?" she asked. "60kgs" I replied. The nurse put me on the scale. It turns out I weigh 80kgs. The nurse asked, "How tall are you?" "5 foot 4 inches," I said

The nurse checked and saw that I was only 5 foot 2 inches. She then took my blood pressure and told me it was high. "Of course it's high!" I screamed, "when I came in here I was tall and slim! Now I'm short and fat!"
Tick tock ... Every evening after work, the doctor went into the local pub where he had a lemon daiquiri. The bartender’s name was Dick. One day, Dick found he didn’t have any lemons and no time to go out and get some, so he decided he would make the doctor a hickory daiquiri instead. He felt sure the doctor would be too tired at the end of the day to notice the difference.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
LAWN WORK
for the winter
Winter Approaches As winter approaches, most people tend to forget about lawns, but there is still quite a lot of work to do with lawns to prepare them for a healthy start to the new growing year. Aeration Just by sticking a garden fork through the lawn gives it a chance after the summer months where heavy traffic (children, dogs, mowers and gardeners) has crossed over the surface, compacting it, and once this happens it is really hard for any wet weather to make an impression - it can’t soak through, so tends to just sit on the surface. 56
Also, underground the soil is so compact that the roots of the grass find it very difficult to break through the surrounding compacted soil once spring time comes around, so I recommend aeration. You can obtain special machines to do this task, but if you don’t have one just pushing a garden fork into the ground, working round all over the lawn will help to break it up. If you have clay soil that is extremely dense and the holes fill up when you walk over it, you can fill these up with sand, thus creating little weep-holes. Fallen Leaves Leaves do a large amount of damage, and as autumn is upon us make sure that your lawn surface is free of fallen leaves. If left, leaves will block out the light and moisture. Even though the grass may survive underneath, yellowing in the process, the covering of leaves will put a strain on the grass and some of the finer blades of grass will actually die out if left like this for prolonged periods. Moss During the wet weather, moss tends to grow, so a good lawn moss killer and winter feed is recommended, followed by a scarify. This will get any thatch and bits and pieces out, and will give the lawn a bit of a boost before winter, removing as much moss as possible before the wet weather appears, making it less likely to spread. Bald Patches Any bald patches in your lawn - usually caused by
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: betty@grapevinepublications.co.uk
animals or children, or even mowing the lawn too short - can be treated around this time of year with some grass seed before the very cold weather comes, giving it time to germinate. This can also be carried out in the spring if it is too close to the winter. Top Dressing This is where Peat, Lomas and mixture is spread over the lawn. This is good for two reasons: it helps to remove any divots and bumps in the lawn, and it helps where the lawnmower has created ruts. It also builds up the top layer making the soil more fertile, enabling the grass to grow thicker when it grows through this layer. The secret is not to lay this on too thick as this could overpower the grass, block out the light and end up creating bald patches. Lawnmower As your lawnmower will by this time no longer be in use, I recommend now would be the time to get it serviced or at least checked over at a garden machinery establishment to ensure that it is ready for use in the spring. Many people leave this task rather late, and by the time they send it in, they
experience a longer wait for their lawnmower to be repaired, so by the time it is ready for use the grass has already become unmanageable. Therefore, if done at this time of year it is just a case of storing it away, ready for the spring. Mole Hills If you are unlucky enough to have a lot of mole hills (moles are quite rife this year), or worm casts (where the worms come up and leave little holes), or even ant hills in your lawn, now is the time to get them flattened out and rolled so they don’t become a problem for next year. • With mole hills, just remove the tops and make sure that the run is compacted. • With worm casts and ant hills, if the ant hills aren’t very big, a lawnmower or a roller will sort that out. Roll the Lawn Then roll the lawn before you aerate and before you top dress and this will help to keep your lawn as level as possible. Next month I will look at pruning apple trees.
If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. he popularity of sparkling wines increases yearly. Always a major part of a celebration or occasion, as well as being enjoyed on their own, sparkling wines offer excellent value and impress, regularly. I searched for a company supplying sparkling wines from different countries and then selected just four, which, to me, offer quality, very good value for money and are widely available. Codorníu Reina Maria Cristina Blanc de Noirs Vintage Reserva Cava Brut (Spain) I found to be superb. Produced in honour of the Regent Queen Maria Cristina of Austria, this production uses Pinot Noir Grapes. A most pleasant bouquet greets the nose and extends pleasures, wonderfully, to the taste buds. Bouvet-Ladubay Saumur Brut NV (France) has Chenin Blanc grapes utilised to great advantage, in this excellent production. A floral and fruity bouquet leads enticingly to the wonderful mouthfeel and palate sensation. This wine is very popular and enjoyed at a great number of events. Famiglia Pasqua Prosecco D.O.C. Treviso Brut (Italy) welcomes with a fruity bouquet. The palate is fresh. This well-balanced production is highlypopular and very suitable for so many occasions, including parties.
Ledbury Focus
Graham Beck Brut Rosé NV (South Africa) has Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes from Graham Beck’s own estate vineyards. This colourful wine has a bouquet of light-red fruits and on the mouthfeel delivers a refreshing taste. Great for al fresco dining. I located these productions at the multi awardwinning Majestic Wine Company. Well-renowned for competitive prices and impressive customer service, Majestic Wine has a most excellent range. There are many wines – each to their own – plus beers, spirits and other beverages, available. I found the staff very knowledgeable and always able to advise on food pairings, etc. Majestic Wine has free tastings, with the opportunity, sometimes, to meet winemakers. Also, I consider the discounts on ‘mix and match’ to be really good, providing great value for money. There is free delivery and free glass hire available (if an event is planned, for example), also. Bonfire Night &
FIREWORK SAFETY
A
s Bonfire Night approaches, we would encourage people to attend one of the large organised displays held throughout the county, and follow the safety precautions set out by the organisers. However, it is understandable that families may want to hold their own firework displays. If you do decide to set fireworks off in a residential area, please consider your neighbours and follow this advice: Fireworks • When buying fireworks always ensure they comply with the British Standard BS7114. This will be shown on the box and on the fireworks themselves. • You cannot buy or use fireworks if you are under 18, and fireworks should always only be handled by a responsible adult. • Always follow the instructions on each firework box, and keep them in enclosed in a box until use. Never keep them in your pocket. • Light fireworks at arms length and stand well back. • Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn't gone off, it could still explode. • Children should always be supervised around fireworks. • Light sparklers one at a time wearing gloves, and always supervise children when
64
using them. They should not be given to children under five. • Keep pets indoors and leave the TV on to distract them from the noise. • Do not set off fireworks after 11pm, or midnight on 5th November. If you are setting your own fireworks off, please consider making your neighbours aware of your plans in advance, so it gives them the option to make alternative plans, or at least prepare themselves and their pets for the noise and disturbance fireworks can cause. Bonfires • Always position bonfires well away from buildings, trees and fireworks. • Keep a distance from bonfires, and always supervise children around them. • Check that no animals are hiding inside the fire before lighting. • Build the fire so that it is stable and will not collapse outwards. • Never use flammable liquids to light the fire, such as petrol. Superintendent Sue Thomas said: "Please be a responsible and considerate member of your community. We all know the dangers of fireworks, however we often become complacent due to them being commonplace. Please be responsible, consider others within your community, act within the law, stay safe and help others stay safe."

PARKING We know that people parking poorly is one of your biggest concerns - whether it's someone who is blocking your driveway with an inconsiderately parked car or a vehicle causing traffic disruption when illegally left on double yellow lines. These issues and more are very often raised as PACT priorities, and that's why we work closely with our partners to resolve them. Our aim is to show inconsiderate motorists that their behaviour will not be tolerated. Some parking myths It's ok to park on double yellow lines if it's only for a few minutes. Not true. Unless you have a disabled parking permit you are not permitted to park on double yellow lines at any time and the restrictions apply 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are a very few exceptions to this and there will be signs to indicate times/dates where it may be permitted. You could face a fine of £30 if you park illegally or you could even have your car towed away. I've only parked on the pavement to leave more room on the road. Parking a vehicle on the pavement could lead to an offence of obstruction being committed. This could result in a Fixed Penalty Notice being issued to offending vehicles. It can also cause danger/nuisance for pedestrians and wheelchairs users. I'm parked on a grass verge, so I should be ok.
permission, then you may be able to park on a grass verge lawfully. I'm dropping off my kids to school, so it's ok to park on the zig-zig lines outside. Please park considerately when dropping off children at schools. If you park on zig-zag lines, you could be committing an offence of obstruction, be liable for a £30 parking fine and even have your vehicle impounded, which will then cost a further £150 to release. What are the police doing? Local policing teams across West Mercia are busy helping communities where illegal and inconsiderate parking is a problem. While some enforcement activity is carried out jointly with partners (in many areas local authorities employ parking enforcement officers rather than the police), often problems can be alleviated through awareness and education, or other practical measures. We have been • Talking to motorists and advising them of the law • Liaising with council parking enforcement officers over local concerns • Issuing Penalty Charge Notices (parking fines) to persistent offenders • Working with partners to find alternative off-road parking opportunities, particularly near to schools Please can we remind motorists not to stop or park opposite or within 10m (32ft) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space.
Again, this is not always true. Vehicles cannot park, either fully or partly, on council-owned grass verges. Often there are local by-laws in place to prevent this, due to the damage vehicles can cause to grass or the need to keep access to properties clear. L
edbury Art Society is growing again. We have lost some treasured members over the year, though we still remember them and their artworks with great pleasure. Life moves on and new members are coming to join in, so now we have the pleasure of getting to know them, and to enjoy their artworks too. It is our great pleasure to share our art with the community and our September Exhibition in the Burgage Hall was no exception. Amazingly, with a footfall of well over 300 during the weekend, the public’s favourite picture was closely contested between three new members. Winning by one vote was ‘Inukstuk’ by Kirsten Hunter who won the Kath Manistre Memorial Rosebowl for the Year. Kirsten says of her winning picture: "Inukshuk (pl. inuksuit) are a type of stone cairn constructed in the likeness of a human. They originate from the Arctic regions of North America and Greenland where they were traditionally used as hunting or navigation aids. I use a loose acrylic style on grey or beige card to mirror the texture of the stone. The geologist in me insists that my rock types are depicted accurately! Each stone must find perfect balance to compliment the centre of gravity (otherwise it would tumble down!). Therefore, to achieve a sense of structural stability in the image every inukshuk I paint, I must first physically construct. My favourite construction spots are up hills (keeping with the Scottish Ledbury Focus
tradition) and beaches where there is a wide variety of stones from which to build. Some have stood for months…" Second was Ian Fountaine with ‘Barn at Whiteleaved Oak’, and third was ‘Gran Canaria Forest 2’ by Malcolm Ennis. The overall standard of pictures this year has gone up by another notch all round. Our membership ranges from newly beginning leisure artists to semi-professionals who sell works through local galleries and on line as well as at our exhibitions. Everyone with an artistic bone in their body, young or old, is very welcome to join us. This November we are trying out a new venture in the Weavers gallery, Church Lane, Ledbury, to make it easier to see more of our work: our new, free entry, Pre-Christmas Exhibition. So come along to enjoy our work, and maybe find a Christmas present or two. We will also have crafted items available to supplement our paintings and celebrate the broad spread of artworks our members enjoy creating. November 21st to 27th - The Weaver’s Gallery, Church Lane - 10am to 4.30pm. Admission Free To learn more about the Ledbury Art Society and what we do why not check out our blogsite: ledburyartsociety.blogspot.com/ or contact us and we will get back in touch with you: ledburyartsociety@btinternet.com 69

B
y the time you read this, Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet will have decided how much money to cut from the Libraries and Customer Services budget. All the library user groups have been lobbying and will have sent representatives to the Cabinet meeting on 13th October (after the printing date for this magazine). Herefordshire has one of the most cost effective library services in the country – any further cuts will be a body blow. Let’s turn to more positive things. The date for our November book sale is 1st to 4th November during Library opening times. One of our members is very kindly storing our book stock for us. We won’t have to put everything out all at once – which made it quite hard to look through all the books last time. This will also give us a better chance of organising books into different sections. Donations of books are already coming in – thank you to everyone. In last month’s Focus, I said that we would be holding our annual quiz on 18th November. We’ve had to change this to Monday 21st November. We are delighted to say that we have been offered the use of The Royal Hall. This is in the Southend, Ledbury, next to the Royal Oak pub. Tickets will be £5 per person, available from the Library. As usual it will be teams of four. Once again we welcome Sara-Jane Arbury as host for the evening. Hope to see you there.

When conservation and wildlife adviser John Clarke put a small and unobtrusive advertisement in a selection of parish magazines, the response was remarkable . . . John's book is a tribute to the Spotted Flycatcher and may well help to halt its decline. He is The Flycatcher Man.
This fascinating little book has proved to be very popular and would make an ideal gift for any bird-watching enthusiast.
