This month we have our usual collection of varied and interesting articles – hopefully, something to please everyone and of course all of our great local advertisers, without whom the Ledbury Focus couldn’t exist. I would also like to mention the small group of people who are becoming regular contributors to the What’s On page – thank you all for your items, and please keep them coming. And if anyone else has events they would like featured in the What’s On page, please drop me an email with the details. And now I’d like to share some exciting news with you . . . well, it’s exciting for us! Grapevine Publications has recently acquired another magazine, called The Link. This publication covers an area in Surrey centred around the towns of Caterham, Kenley and Purley - if you or anyone you know, have an internet-based business, this may be of interest to you – so give me a call to discuss rates and options. November is the month in which we pay tribute to those who fell in battle, and there are several Remembrance Day commemorations in Ledbury this month, if you would like to attend one or more of them – in particular, have a look at pages 32 and 73 for more details. Next month is our Christmas issue, so don’t leave it too late to get your articles, events and adverts to us by the copy deadline, 8th November. Until next time, enjoy this month’s magazine.

POETRY NEWS from

LEDBURY POETRY FESTIVAL

T

he Festival won the title of Herefordshire’s “Best Community Festival” in this year’s Visit Herefordshire Awards. The judges praised the Festival for being “truly embedded in the community” and for having “enormous reach and scope” for a festival of its size. The award recognised the Festival’s national and international appeal, and also the fact that hundreds of volunteers get involved, and that the Festival enjoys real grass roots support of Ledbury’s shops, business and organisations. The award highlighted the excellent work that the Festival does in local schools and the community, which is marvellous, as these activities of the Festival deserve to be more widely known. Community Workshops Did you know the Festival holds workshops with poets that are free to attend? Try Segments at Hereford Museum and Art Gallery HR4 9AU, Monday 6th November, 10am – 12noon, and at Museum Resource and Learning Centre, HR4 0AS, Monday 18th December 10am – 12 noon. Poetry is powerful. It shows us the world in new ways; it teaches, heals and celebrates. The Festival runs many successful workshops throughout the community, working with people who have chronic health conditions, mental distress and other life circumstances. If you have a group that you think would benefit from working with poetry, get in touch with the Festival Manager: manager@poetryfestival.co.uk Poets in Schools It’s been a busy Autumn for the Festival’s innovative schools programme with a booked out performance of Young Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, two Poetry Out Loud mini-festivals and the continuation of poets-in-residence in schools across the county. The Festival also holds inset days for teachers to use ideas and techniques to enliven their lessons ; “Thank you for providing this wonderful opportunity”. For more information on the Festival’s brilliant schools’ programme, contact director@poetry-festival.co.uk Ledbury Focus

Poetry Salons Do you want to discover more about poetry? Have you been looking for a place to perform your own poetry? Why not come along to one of the Festival’s Poetry Salons, which includes an Open Mic. The next Salon features Poets Anneliese Emmans Dean and Sara Hirsch who will read and discuss their poems. Both poets are superb performers and work extensively in schools, so this Salon will have a special focus on the art of performance and inspiring young people to read, write and perform poetry. After the break the Open Mic is a chance to perform your poems to a friendly and welcoming audience and to meet other writers. Ledbury Poetry Salon, Tuesday 7 November, 7pm – 9pm, The Panelled Room in The Master's House, only £5 to include a drink. Poetry Competition Winners The winners of the Festival’s International Poetry Competition have recently been announced. Find out who they are, and read the winning poems on our website www.poetry-competition.co.uk Volunteers Have we inspired you to get involved? There will be a training day on Wednesday 14 March, 2018 to learn how to become an Event Manager. Check website for details or call 01531 634156 to find out more. We look forward to seeing you!

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Apple Time I

f you have an apple tree that has not been looked at for years, or one that has been pruned but you’re unsure what to do or how much to take off, here are some pruning techniques to point you in the right direction. Let’s start off with a tree that has not been pruned and look at ways to encourage better growth and increase yield. Apples trees that have not been touched for a long time suffer

12

from air not circulating around the tree. A good way to tell if this is the case is to stand by the trunk of the tree and look up. What you’re looking for is sky. Back when I was a student we were told if you can’t throw your hat up and out of the top of the tree then how was air going to move around. And up to a certain point this is right. Also you are looking to take out any inward pointing or crossing branches. Once this is done it

Pruning a branch to set fruit Leaf buds look small and pointed; blossom buds are bigger and more rounded. If you pinch out the end of a branch it will put on what are called water shoots (a very strong upright growth with just leaf buds). By cutting the water shoots off at this time of the year to 3 to 5 buds, next year they will turn into blossom buds. To keep this up the tree would need to be pruned every year. Setting a branch Once a second year branch gets fruit the weight of the fruit pulls the branch over and makes it set at that angle. It will then normally grow a water shoot off this bend. If the tree is too low to walk under or mow near, this joint is the best place to take the branch back and still keep the weeping effect of the tree. If your tree has had a damaged branch and is a little one-sided, take a water shoot in its first or second year and use string to pull

it over into the gap to create an umbrella shape. It will then set into this position. Things to be done in November in your garden ■■ With fruit trees put, grease bands around the trunk of your tree about two feet up. Follow the instructions on the box. Grease bands aim to stop the female codling moth laying its eggs near blossom before the fruit forms.

cover your compost, for example with a plastic sheet kept in place by something heavy like bricks. ■■ If the frost has not yet come this is a good time to jet wash patios and paths to help stop them getting slippery when wet. ■■ If you have any wooden garden furniture try and get it under cover to help protect it. ■■ If you are thinking about planting a hedge, now is the

time to do it as it is much cheaper to get what is called ‘Bare Root’ stock where hedging is grown in big numbers, and is lifted and not potted up. I would always recommend a bamboo cane and rabbit guard with each plant, even if you do not have a problem with rabbits, as the cane and guard will help support the plant during the winter from being flattened by strong winds or snow.

■■ Prune your roses and pick off this year’s leaves and burn them (do not compost them). I will cover more on this next month. ■■ Turn your compost over. The aim is to mix everything well to add moisture and air, both essential to speeding up the process. Try to move thick material, like roots, to the centre where it will break down quicker. Don’t forget to If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Age Is No Barrier To Volunteering!

V

olunteering is one of the most rewarding things you can do. By offering your time, life skills and experience, you can help older people in your community improve their quality of life and maintain their independence and wellbeing. Many people find that volunteering helps with the transition into retirement but age is no barrier to volunteering. If you can smile – you can volunteer! Volunteering is helping, not hiring; giving, not taking; contributing, not counting. Volunteering is about ordinary people doing extraordinary things. The value of volunteering is priceless! Have you got the time, please? At Age UK Hereford & Localities we are currently looking for volunteers to support our services and help us make a difference to the lives of older people in Ledbury, including:

Ledbury Focus

Our Land Girls

T

he National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire has over 300 tributes and statues to commemorate service personal across the two world wars. My husband Michael, and I visited the Arboretum and were astonished by it's size, and how many different home front services were now honoured. At the end of our visit we were surprised when we came across a memorial to the Woman's Land Army. It was a striking statue with two Land Girls smiling bravely, and carrying farm implements. At their feet were several gruesome instruments, one of which was a gin trap, for catching rats. The Women's Land Army (WLA) was first established in World War 1, but was re-formed shortly before the outbreak of World War 2. At that time, Britain relied a great deal on food brought in from other countries, and it was thought that imports would be threatened by German blockades. In addition many male farm workers were expected to join up, leaving a shortage of farm labour. The Government was keen to increase food production, hence the Women's Land Army was again needed. There were two sections of the WLA: the Land Girls, who mainly did farm work, and the Timber Corps who tended the forests, keeping the home fires burning.. Initially Land Girls were paid a minimum wage of ÂŁ1.85 for a 50 hour week, but later this was increased to ÂŁ2.85. Through the war years there were more than 80,000 women working the land. My mother and her sister were Land Girls, and I can still remember running wild in the fields and watching them work. They had a large range of jobs, including milking cows with strange half covered buckets, and delivering the milk. They were also

16

expected to cope with handling heavy horses, driving tractors, muck spreading, taking care of the lambing, as well as all the poultry. There was also crop gathering, ditch digging, rat catching, roof thatching, bee keeping, and farm maintenance. They worked long hours, especially during the summer months, and these are the times I can remember the most; but they also worked in the cold, rain, and frost of the winter. What a life they had, but they were always cheerful. I can remember the badge my mother wore - it resembled a sheaf of wheat, as a symbol of their agricultural work. There was even an official magazine 'The Land Girls', and they also had their own special song: Back to the land we must all lend a hand, To the farms and the fields we must go. There's a job to be done, Though we can’t fire a gun, We can still do our bit with a hoe. At the end of the war the men were demobbed, and the farm hands returned to the cottage we lived in, so we had to leave, but I will never forget that time. I was so proud to see the tribute to the WLA at the National Memorial Arboretum. It is a special place of peace and remembrance, and for us to never forget all those who did their bit for our country. Entrance is free and if you would like to visit you can find details on their website; www.thenma.org.uk

In aid of Ledbury Community Transport, Michael Lunts presents

Flanders and Swann revisited through the eyes of John Betjeman

18th November

Saturday 7.30pm

TICKET PRICING Standard: £15 Laugh away those 21st Century blues in the company of Flanders and Swann, here perfectly complemented by the words and wit of Sir John Betjeman. Featuring a cornucopia of songs, familiar and less familiar, from The Hippopotamus to A Transport of Delight, from The Gnu to Have Some Madeira, M’Dear, the songs of Flanders and Swann are, as pianist, actor and singer Michael Lunts shows, rooted in that vision of the recent past often called Betjeman’s Britain. A world where Miss

includes a glass of wine

Joan Hunter Dunn brushes shoulders with the illfated lovers in The Honeysuckle and the Bindweed, where Betjeman shares his love of all forms of ’obsolete transport’ with Flanders and Swann’s evocation of pre-Beeching Britain in The Slow Train. Wallow, (along with the Hippopotamus!) in a little nostalgia for a by-gone world and the more gentle humour exemplified by these archobservers of our national character.

Now, the Co-op is showing real commitment to being a leading retailer of beers, wines and spirits, several of which are award-winning. From Portugal Escudo Real Vinho Verde regularly pleases wine lovers. The white wine is great to drink on its own and to accompany many dishes, also. If al fresco dining is an option, this slightly sparkling production will not disappoint. Spain has many wines, too. I located MarquĂŠs de Valido Gran Reserva Rioja. This wine has a lot of devotees and, as a matured red from the region, is extremely popular for numerous dining occasions. Wonderful to accompany a good number of dishes, including Sunday roasts. France has been a favoured wine producer for centuries and I am very much impressed with the Les Launes Delas Crozes-Hermitage wine production. This is a regular choice for many, with dark fruits being very apparent on the nose, mouthfeel and palate. For Italy's wines I do like Chianti, and Villa Boscorotondo Chianti Classico Riserva impresses

me. This much loved wine adorns many dining tables and accompanies numerous dishes of cuisine superbly. Good for ageing. From Germany, for me, it has to be riesling. The Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Riesling Kabinett receives my vote. A most pleasant bouquet leads, enticingly, to the mouthfeel and palate sensations. Wonderful to pair with white meats, fish, seafood and many other dishes. Champagne is always a favourite to add that extra 'something' to a dining occasion or event. Les Pionniers Vintage Champagne is, I find, a most splendid blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varieties. On its own or to accompany cuisine, with its long finish, this is one for the 'top table'. As part of the membership promotion, customers can be rewarded for buying own label beers, wines and spirits. The Co-op is committed to supporting global communities via Fairtrade. These selections are just some of the many choices available. Please visit the website for all details. www.coop.co.uk As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

The Difference if you marry a South African Girl ... Three friends married women from different parts of the world. The first man married a Greek girl. He told her that she was to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away. The second man married a girl from Thailand. He gave his wife instructions that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done, and there was a huge dinner on the table. The third man married a girl from South Africa. He ordered her to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. He said the first day he didn't see anything. The second day he didn't see anything either but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher. He still has some difficulty when he pees.

Birches farm - August 2017

Exploring Herefordshire’s landscapes with Herefordshire Wildlife Trust . . .

Farmland

H

umans have been farming in the UK for thousands of years, producing crops and raising livestock. During this time, the UK slowly transformed into a farmed landscape with wildlife finding a new home in the habitats it created, from flower-filled fields to bushy hedgerows, reed-lined ponds to seed-filled stubbles.

34

During the 20th century, many traditional methods of farming declined as agriculture rapidly changed, becoming more modernised, mechanised and intensified. The faming landscape changed, habitats were lost and the associated wildlife finding it hard to adapt, started to decline. Hedge-laying, rotational and diverse cropping, seasonal grazing, and leaving winter stubble and field margins are just some of the farming methods that have become less common. However, much farmland is still managed sensitively with

wildlife in mind and many farmers actively restore wildlife habitat which has been lost from their land. Planting and managing hedgerows, leaving wild-flower margins at the edges of arable fields and restoring farm ponds are some of the ways that farmers are creating wildlife-friendly farms. Across the UK The Wildlife Trusts are working closely with farmers and landowners to ensure that farmland is managed in the best way for wildlife, while still providing a living to those who work the land. Autumn ancestry... a time of colour and plenty

T

here is still a heady aroma of cider in the orchard as the last of the apples drop to the ground, there to be picked over by pheasants and blackbirds. The crop was heavy this year and there was no hope of using all the apples or the damsons, or even giving them away. With so much fallen fruit, walking in the orchard was a precarious business. I was in danger of sliding to the ground amongst the hornets and a hatch of very smart red admirals feasting on the fermenting pears. The hornets buzzed them continuously but I was never quite sure whether they were after the butterflies or the sugars from the fruit. Autumn is a wonderful time for foragers. Hedgerows are laden with fruit and berries. The wild damsons in my hedge have helped to keep up my five a day count for weeks. But the myrobalan plum has remained tantalisingly out of reach, frustrating as it makes the most wonderful jam. And any chance of me getting hazel Ledbury Focus

nuts before the squirrels, is next to zero. Two puff balls (mushrooms) appeared on the back lawn along with a small forest of shaggy ink caps. A friend keeps pointing out the ones I can eat, but I’m afraid I’m still reticent about trying them. It is all too easy to get it wrong with grim consequences. One of the prettiest fungi - the red and white spotted fly agaric - is not all it seems; it causes hallucinations and has a substance in it which can make you very poorly indeed. I think I’ll stick to the mushrooms I buy. Responsible foraging is great fun but there are some rules to remember: never eat anything unless you are one hundred percent sure it is safe; always leave some behind for wildlife; minimise damage; do not pick anything rare or that is not abundant, always ask permission from the landowner, and finally, it is against the law to dig up any wild plant. Only take what you plan to eat.

Gardeners will be burning their fallen leaves and prunings now and others lighting bonfires on November 5th... please, look out for the hedgehogs that might be hibernating in them. Check your bonfires before lighting them, and should you find a prickly friend who has been munching through your slugs all year, find him somewhere cosy for the winter, and he will be there again next spring helping you win the war against those pesky molluscs. November sees the end of autumn, those wonderful colours of dying leaves as the chloroform fades from them . . . Article and photos by Geraldine Holbourn

Bonfire & Firework Safety ■■ Always follow the instructions on each firework box, and keep them in enclosed in a box until use. Never keep them in your pocket. ■■ Light fireworks at arms length and stand well back. ■■ Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn't gone off, it could still explode. ■■ Children should always be supervised around fireworks. ■■ Light sparklers once at a time wearing gloves, and always supervise children when using them. They should not be given to children under five. ■■ Keep pets indoors and leave the TV on to distract them from the noise. ■■ Do not set off fireworks after 11pm, or midnight on 5th November.

A

s Bonfire Night approaches, we would encourage people to attend one of the large organised displays held throughout the county, and follow the safety precautions set out by the organisers. However, it is understandable that families may want to hold their own firework displays. If you do decide to set fireworks off in a residential area, please consider your neighbours and follow this advice: Fireworks ■■ When buying fireworks always ensure they comply with the British Standard BS7114. This will be shown on the box and on the fireworks themselves. ■■ You cannot buy or use fireworks if you are under 18, and fireworks should always only be handled by a responsible adult.

48

■■ If you are setting your own fireworks off, please consider making your neighbours aware of your plans in advance, so it gives them the option to make alternative plans, or at least prepare themselves and their pets for the noise and disturbance fireworks can cause. Bonfires ■■ Always position bonfires well away from buildings, trees and fireworks. ■■ Keep a distance from bonfires, and always supervise children around them. ■■ Check that no animals are hiding inside the fire before lighting. ■■ Build the fire so that it is stable and will not collapse outwards. ■■ Never use flammable liquids to light the fire, such as petrol.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

Superintendent Sue Thomas said: "Please be a responsible and considerate member of your community. We all know the dangers of fireworks, however we often become complacent due to them being commonplace. Please be responsible, consider others within your community, act within the law, stay safe and help others stay safe."

Road Safety Week 20th to 26th November

Road Safety Week is the UK's biggest road safety event, coordinated annually by Brake and involving thousands of schools, organisations and communities each year. Brake is a road safety charity that works to prevent road death and injury, make streets and communities safer, and supports the victims of road crashes. Brake founded Road Safety Week in 1997 as an annual event to raise awareness about road safety and promote steps that everyone can take to stop these needless deaths and injuries year-round. In the UK speeding is still a major problem. It causes needless crashes, untold suffering and stops people living safe and healthy lives. Driving is unpredictable and if something unexpected happens on the road ahead – such as a child stepping out from between parked cars – it is a driver’s speed that will determine whether they can stop in time and, if they can’t stop, how hard they will hit. Yet newer vehicles are more powerful than ever before and reach high speeds quickly. Driving fast is glamorised and often encouraged by programmes and adverts that worship the cult of the car. We all live busy lives and there is a temptation to speed up Ledbury Focus

in the hope of saving time, where in fact we could be costing lives. That is why we are encouraging everyone to Speed Down Save Lives for Road Safety Week 2017.

White Ribbon Day 25th November

What is the White Ribbon Campaign (WRC)? The WRC is the largest effort in the world of men working to end men's violence against women. It relies on volunteer support and financial contributions from individuals and organizations. How did the WRC get started? In 1991, a handful of men in Canada decided they had a responsibility to urge men to speak out against violence against women. They decided that wearing a white ribbon would be a symbol of men's opposition to men's violence against women. After only six weeks preparation, as many as one hundred thousand men across Canada wore a white ribbon. Many others were drawn into discussion and debate on the issue of men's violence. There are now White Ribbon Campaigns operating in many countries around the world. The UK Branch of WRC was started in 2004. What does it mean to wear a white ribbon? Wearing a white ribbon is a personal pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. Each year, the WRC urge men and boys to wear a ribbon for one or two weeks, starting on November 25th, the International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women.

Could an imbalance in your jaw be causing your health issues? by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DIpM, BTAA, BAUK

mbalance in the jaw or more specifically the temporomandibular joint or TMJ (for short!) can cause a host of health issues and unpleasant symptoms. In this article, I talk about how this joint can become unbalanced and the problems that may arise as a result of the imbalance. I also highlight how I have used this procedure in practice with several clients struggling with different problems. Location of the TMJ The temporomandibular joint or TMJ is the joint of the jaw and is a bilateral synovial articulation between the mandible and temporal bone. The name of the joint is derived from the two bones which form the joint: the upper temporal bone which is part of the cranium/skull, and the lower jawbone or mandible. The TMJ essentially connects the jaw to the skull. Causes of TMJ imbalance Imbalance in the TMJ may be experienced after receiving dentistry especially after significant dentistry work where individuals have been in the dentist’s chair with their mouth open for an extended period.

Some people hold stress and tension in their jaw area which can make the TMJ ache and feel uncomfortable. Injuries to the neck or jaw can also cause problems with the TMJ that often respond well to treatment. I also work with the procedure to correct an imbalance in other areas of the spine that are being compensated for in the TMJ. It is interesting that anatomically the TMJ almost mirrors the pelvis when viewed in a certain way. I will often work with the TMJ procedure when a client is not responding significantly to direct work on the pelvis or lower back as this may bring relief. Some common problems that may be caused by TMJ imbalance When the TMJ is out of balance an individual may experience all sorts of problems, some of these could include: • Allergies / Hay fever • Asthma symptoms • Upper respiratory tract problems • Congestion in upper respiratory • Sinus problems • Swollen glands • Sore throats

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

• Neck problems • Eye-sight problems • Ear problems including tinnitus • Teeth grinding • Teeth crowding • Clicking jaw • Migraines • Headaches • Hormonal imbalance • TMJ syndrome • Issues with facial symmetry The TMJ Procedure The Bowen Technique offers two procedures that work directly with the TMJ and that can be used to address some of the problems listed above. The advanced TMJ can be used to address more long-standing or stubborn TMJ problems. Light moves are made under the mouth and around the neck area, the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) which sits at either side of the neck is gently massaged which helps to drain the lymph in this area. The SCM muscle is like a big tube that sits at either side of the neck and can often become congested and painful. Directly working with this muscle alone can often relieve neck pain and sinus type problems. After the SCM has been worked several moves around the neck and throat area are applied. The next part of the procedure has the client placing a finger between their teeth, which opens the joint so we can make a light move over it in order to affect the

Ledbury Focus

fascia beneath. Gentle moves are then made behind and around the ear. The advanced TMJ procedure also applies a light move over the face near the cheek bone which effects the masseter muscle which influences the bite and jaw movement. Some examples in practice Neck trauma Client presenting with severe neck pain and constriction, movement incredibly limited. Client taking strong pain relief. In the first session, I performed the Bowen neck moves along with TMJ. Later that day client reported a marked improvement in movement and that the pain was dramatically reduced. I performed the TMJ again a week later and the rotation of the neck was almost back to normal. Very little pain and no need since the first session for pain relief. Several months later and the client was still pain-free with maximum rotation of the neck. What the sessions did uncover was an old trauma locked into the tissues of the neck. The Bowen work helped release this old trauma from the tissues and the fascia. Often when old trauma is released in this way the results of the Bowen work will remain indefinitely. Hay fever Client presenting with severe hay fever which had started around a week prior to first treatment. Symptoms included: nasal congestion, profuse sneezing, eye

irritation, pain in the face, breathing difficulties. On the first session, I worked to drain the client’s sinus area on the face along with the SCM drain. There was a marked improvement when I saw her a week later. On the second session, we performed the full TMJ including the SCM drain again and the work on the sinus area on the face. On the third session, the client reported a significant reduction in all her symptoms along with a general feeling of wellness. Sinus Problems The client presented with blocked sinuses which were being treated currently with a steroid nasal spray taken 3 times per day with limited effect. In the first session we performed preliminary work balancing the neck, draining the SCM and the sinus work on the face. When the client returned for the second session she commented on how she could breathe easier and that the sinus areas on her face felt less swollen. On the second session, we performed the full TMJ including the SCM drain and work on the sinuses. When the client returned for her third session she reported a significant improvement. The client returned for a “top-up” a month later and told me she had been able to stop taking her steroid spray with the blessing of her GP and that her symptoms were completely gone.

Chocolate Fudge Brownies A rich chocolate flavour and slightly gooey texture combine for the perfect brownie. Make sure you use good quality dark chocolate - at least 70% cocoa solids. They'll keep fresh for 3 days - if you can resist them that long!

METHOD

INGREDIENTS

85g dark chocolate 100g butter, unsalted 125g caster sugar 100g muscovado sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 whole eggs plus 1 extra yolk, beaten together 100g plain flour 3 tablespoons cocoa powder

yy

Preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas Mark 4.

yy

Grease and line an 18cm square cake tin.

yy

Crumble the chocolate into a heat-proof bowl, add the butter, then rest the bowl over a pan of simmering water - don't let the water touch the base of the boil.

yy

Allow to melt, then set aside.

yy

When cool, stir the sugars and vanilla extract into the chocolate.

yy

Gently beat in the eggs and extra yolk, then sift in the flour and cocoa powder. Stir until well combined.

yy

Pour into the cake tin, and bake for 30 minutes.

yy

The mixture should be risen, but with a slightly soft centre, with moist crumbs sticking to a skewer placed into the middle.

yy

Leave to stand for 5 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack.

yy

When cool, remove the baking parchment, cut into 16 squares and serve.

The Ledbury Ladies R.N.L.I Guild

A

celebration tinged with sadness was held at The Feathers Hotel ending five decades of support for the Royal National Lifeboats Institution in the Ledbury district. The Ledbury Ladies R.N.L.I Guild was first formed in 1969, and arose from a talk given by the Lifeboat’s regional secretary. The powerful message inspired a few members to recruit enough ladies to form a fundraising guild, for Ledbury and the district. Over the last half-century, numerous local events have been organised bringing in hundreds of thousands of pounds for the important work of saving lives at sea, with more than £100,000 raised in the last sixteen years since the beginning of the 21st century. Many people are not aware that the work of the R.N.L.I is supported solely by public donation, for which there is an ongoing and ever increasing need. The Guild has been fortunate and grateful for the loyal and steadfast generosity of many local people, who have opened their homes and gardens in aid of the cause. The Guild is renowned for its distinctive high class catering provided at all events, and the winning combination of food and gardens guaranteed huge ticket sales.

Homeopathy . . .

helping the body to heal itself

T

he principle of treating ‘like with like’ dates back to Hippocrates (460 – 377 BC) but in its current form homeopathy has been used worldwide for more than 200 years. It recognises that all symptoms of ill health are an expression of disharmony within the whole person – and that it is the patient that needs treating, not the disease. Homeopathy was founded by a German doctor called Samuel Hahnemann (1745 – 1843). He was shocked by the harsh medical treatments of the day which included blood-letting, purging and the use of poisons such as arsenic. Hahnemann was also a translator and it was while he was translating a medical book that he noticed that the action of quinine was such that it could cause symptoms similar to malaria, and yet it was used to treat that condition. He began to think about the idea of curing conditions with what he called ‘similars.’ For instance, homeopaths cure rashes with medicines made from stinging nettles and colds and hay fever are treated by tablets made from alum sepia (red onion). Many substances used – like belladonna (deadly nightshade) – are poisonous if taken in their raw state. Homeopathic medicines contain only a tiny trace of the original materials used and are totally safe. It is important to buy medication from a homeopath or reputable supplier. Never attempt to make your own – you could end up doing more harm than good.

68

When you visit a homeopath for the first time, he or she will take a detailed case history in order that they can build up a complete picture of you as a person. Questions asked might include things like: • Do you prefer hot or cold drinks? • What sort of music do you listen to? • What do you worry about? • Which parts of your body are affected when you get stressed? The initial consultation may take an hour or longer and the homeopath will decide, based on the answers you have given, which medication is best to try first. A few useful remedies for common conditions are: Arnica (tablets or cream) for bruises. Never use on an open wound. Belladonna for sunburn or sunstroke Ruta for eye strain Apis for wasp stings and cystitis Nux vomica for hangovers When using homeopathic medicine, follow the instructions carefully. For best results, don’t eat, drink or clean your teeth for fifteen minutes before and after taking tablets.

For instance, if you took nux vomica for a hangover you would notice an immediate improvement. However your symptoms would return – possibly more severely – if you drank a cup of coffee immediately after taking the tablets. Some important points to remember: • Make sure the person you consult is a member of the Society of Homeopaths. • Take any medication in accordance with instructions. Never take more than the stated dose. • Don’t try making your own medication – many of the raw ingredients used are highly toxic. • If symptoms worsen, consult a doctor. ith November, comes the prospect of fireworks.

Many pets become anxious and frightened when fireworks are going off and unlike us, they do not understand why there are loud bangs and bright flashes outside. The most human thing to do, when our pets are distressed is to comfort and reassure them – sadly however, this can sometimes make the situation worse because we are actually re-enforcing that there is something to be frightened of. Signs that your pet may be fearful, may include the following: ■■ Ears back ■■ Excessive panting ■■ Drooling ■■ Trembling or Shaking ■■ Cowering or hiding behind/ under furniture ■■ Barking excessively ■■ Less interaction with family members or other pets ■■ Soiling in the house ■■ Not wanting to eat There are a number of ways we can help to ease your pets anxiety, including: ■■ Provide a covered den for your pet to hide away in Ledbury Focus

Remember, Remember

your pets this November ■■ Keep doors, windows and cat flaps closed after dusk

cats - this is available as a plug in diffuser or spray.

■■ Take your dog for a walk, well before the fireworks are likely to begin

■■ We also have a number of calming agents, such as Zylkene and Calmex, which are very beneficial if used in plenty of time. In severe cases sedation may be indicated but this is usually a last resort.

■■ Have the curtains drawn and lights on – this will help to mask the flashes ■■ Have the television or radio on slightly louder than normal – this will help to drown out the bangs ■■ For owners of Rabbits & Guinea Pigs. please provide extra bedding hay so that your pet has somewhere to hide and cover the hutch with blankets to mask the flashes and reduce the loud bangs ■■ There are a couple pheromone based products we recommend for dogs and cats. Adaptil for dogs - this is available as a plug in diffuser, collar, spray or express tablets. Feliway for

Please also be aware of horses during the season, and if you are having a firework party please inform your neighbours if they have horses, so that they can be shut in. We are frequently called to horses which have sustained injuries after firework parties, so please be responsible if you are doing so. For an assessment of your pet’s needs during the Firework season, please contact a member of our team for advice on 01531 632276

The Ledbury Town Remembrance Parade 2017

et more initiatives aimed at ‘raising the bar,’ raising already high standards, were discussed during the recent Ledbury Town Council Remembrance Parade Committee Meeting. With ideas from the Parade Marshal, Captain Len Huff and Mr Lloyd Meredith, President of the Royal British Legion, Ledbury, all fully supported by the Committee, the Remembrance Parade on 12 November is destined to be the best yet. In recent years, the efforts of Messrs Huff and Meredith have brought about a virtual ‘new look’ to many aspects of this very special occasion, thought by many to be the most important outdoor event in the Town’s calendar. Two years ago a dais was introduced which added much to the status of the Parade and has allowed the Deputy Lieutenant, or whoever might have been appointed in his or her stead, to see and be seen by every-body on Parade. The presence of the Ledbury Town Brass Band has been a wonderful addition to the Parade’s level of professionalism and the Band now has a bass drum that makes marching for the young and the notso-young much simpler – just listen for the beat of the drum and you will always be in step! And although not everybody will be aware of it, the music’s tempo is slowed a little for the benefit of the ‘not-so-young!’

Ledbury Focus

But apart from an ever-increasing number of ladies and gentlemen on the Parade, civilians and former members of the Armed Forces alike, along with possibly hundreds of youngsters from a multitude of the Town’s schools, teams, groups and clubs, all gathered in long, straight lines the length and breadth of the High Street, a most wonderful feature of the Parade each year is surely the simply huge number of spectators from the town and, it is thought, from neighbouring towns and villages. And their applause as the ‘Legionnaires’ as well as the youngsters march past is always especially touching. Somewhat humbling, too. The Parade Marshal says that he can see backs straighten

and heads lift whenever that applause begins! A ripple at first, quickly growing to a thundering coming-together of the palms of the hands and cries of “Well done!” However, if there is one tiny drawback to the huge numbers of spectators, it is that those gathered right in front of the Market House unwittingly create a situation whereby the Director of Music, Mr Colin Herbert and the Parade Marshal can neither see nor hear each other – and this they need to do! So it is much hoped that no spectator will feel at all offended if there is a barrier placed just in front of the Town’s Market House which will create a small space and hopefully solve all the current ‘problems,’ as slight as they might seem to be to many readers of the ‘Ledbury Focus’! It is hoped that stalwart of so many of Ledbury Town’s Remembrance Parades, Squadron Leader Don Rule MBE RAF will once again feel able to recite the moving, ‘Kohimah Epitaph’ whilst all those assembled will surely welcome the newly arrived Chaplain to the Royal British Legion, Ledbury Branch, the Rev Bill MacKenzie, a former officer with The Gurkha Regiment in Nepal, Malaya, Borneo and Brunei. It is surely going to be another memorable Remembrance Parade and, yes, “We will remember them.” [These moving illustrations are by the well known Ledbury artist, Tony Coppin]73

A New Life For Your Old Tools

I

magine for a moment what it would feel like for a carpenter, tailor or mechanic in a developing country in Africa struggling to feed their family to be able to use a set of good quality tools which they could never normally dream of owning. Imagine also how frustrating it must be to have to use the poor quality tools on sale in their local market. Well, you can help in a practical way and it won’t cost you a penny! We all have old tools in our sheds, garages and lofts: broken, rusting or just no longer needed. Maybe they belonged to partners, parents or grandparents and have huge sentimental value and we don’t just want to sell them or throw them away. Malvern Hills Tools For Self Reliance is a newly– formed group of volunteers who meet once a week and refurbish old tools of all sorts to a good, working standard and send them to six countries in Africa via our parent charity in Southampton. We accept all sorts of tools: for carpentry, car mechanics, tailoring, gardening and building, as well as power tools and sewing machines. We have already dispatched our first consignment of refurbished tools to Southampton. We are affiliated to Tools For Self Reliance, a charity which was established in 1979 and works with local groups in Tanzania, Malawi, Uganda, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Zambia. They have a very interesting and informative website (www.tfsr.org) where you can see how your refurbished tools will be used in Africa. Please contact Martin on 01684 540491 if you have tools to donate or if you would like to join our group and donate your time and skills to help others. We meet every Wednesday morning. Thank you.
