And welcome to the October issue of the Ledbury Focus. Many of you will be wondering about the new face, so let me introduce myself ... my name is Betty-Ann Ambury, and I am the new editor of the Ledbury Focus. Nadelle, your previous editor, has decided it’s time for a change, and has handed the reins over to me. So, if you would like to advertise in the magazine, or have an event you’d like to tell people about, please give me a call ... my contact details are to the left of this page. On to this month’s magazine. As always there are lots of great articles, and lots happening in and around Ledbury. This month we also pay tribute to Her Majesty the Queen as our longest reigning monarch (page 74). Brave the Shave (page 38) is well worth having a look at - it’s not too late to either join in or just make a donation. Summer is almost over, and next month will be our first autumn issue, which means it’s time to start thinking about your Christmas advertising, so give me a call and let’s get your seasonal adverts planned in good time. Until next month, take care and happy reading.

Hereford & Localities News Tax Surgery 31 October is the deadline for returning paper self-assessment forms to HMRC though online forms can be submitted up to 31 January 2016. Have you applied for the Marriage Allowance? The Marriage Allowance lets you transfer £1,060 of your Personal Allowance to your husband, wife or civil partner. Your Personal Allowance is the income you don’t have to pay tax on - for most people it’s £10,600. Adding £1,060 to your partner’s Personal Allowance means they’ll pay £212 less tax in the tax year (6 April to 5 April the next year). You can get Marriage Allowance if your partner’s income is between £10,601 and £42,385 and you and your partner were born on or after 6 April 1935. If you need help with this or other tax matters, make an appointment for our tax surgery on Thursday 15 October. If you don’t qualify, you may be able to apply directly to your electricity supplier for help if you’re on a low income or you get certain means-tested benefits. Check with your supplier to see if you’re eligible and how to apply. Computer Help We’re launching new computer help this autumn, looking at providing simple tuition on a one-to-one basis for older people. ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness . . .’ article & photography by Geraldine Holbourn

K

eats’ lines must be the most famous evocation of autumn and watching the bees gathering the last pollen from the crocosmia, I imagined that he was surely inspired by one of those golden, still, September days when autumn oozes abundance, and the frantic busyness of spring and summer is over. Life is slowing towards the long sleep of winter. Autumn is, as Keats writes, a season with its own song, beautiful, melancholy yet one filled with hope and expectation; spring will return and the cycle of life will begin again. For now though, in the dying days of the year, life in the garden goes on. Creatures feast on autumn’s harvest, storing up reserves before the ravages of winter. We too enjoy the glut of food, foraging for blackberries, sloes for gin, and damsons for jam. 18 To advertise call Betty

Near the house I have three greengages. The ancient parent tree has lost most of its branches and survives as a support for a golden hop. None of the three have been known to bear fruit with any success. If one greengage appeared, it was a cause of excitement and should there ever be enough to make a crumble there was great celebration. This year though, the trees have excelled themselves and produced the largest crop I’ve seen, enough to make at least ten pounds of jam. I waited for them to ripen with anticipation; greengages, a plum, are delicious.

lamented the loss of my greengage jam, I noticed the hornets. They were hunting, not for the juiciest fruit, but for something much meatier, bees.

Ripening time approached, the fruits were doing well, expectations grew, disaster fell. The greengages split, the wasps arrived and the most successful crop since 1986 was lost. But it’s an ill wind, for as I

We mourn the loss of summer as it dies in the rich splendour of autumn. For some, like the queen hornet, winter will be a time of sleep until spring, for others it will be a daily fight for survival.

A hornet dropped down like an attack helicopter, grasping a bumblebee and flying with it to a nearby bay tree where, clinging with one leg to a leaf, and clutching the bee with its others, it quickly consumed its prey. A few days later death stalked my flower borders as a hornet hunted amongst the crocosmia, taking another bee. Life and death, two sides of the same coin.

The TMJ and its impact upon our health by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DipM

In this article I share with you some information concerning the temporomandibular joint or TMJ (for short!) and its importance for our health. I will talk about how the joint can become unbalanced and the problems that can arise as a result. I will also share with you an exercise that is useful for strengthening the joint. Location of the TMJ The temporomandibular joint or TMJ is the joint of the jaw and is a bilateral synovial articulation between the mandible and temporal bone. The name of the joint is derived from the two bones which form the joint: the upper temporal bone which is part of the cranium / skull, and the lower jawbone or mandible. The TMJ essentially connects the jaw to the skull. Causes of TMJ imbalance Imbalance in the TMJ may be experienced after receiving dentistry especially after significant dentistry work where individuals have been in the dentist’s chair with their mouth open for an extended period. Some people hold stress and tension in their jaw area which can make the TMJ ache and feel uncomfortable. 22

Injuries to the neck or jaw can also cause problems with the TMJ that often respond well to treatment. I also work with the procedure to correct imbalance in other areas of the spine that are being compensated for in the TMJ. It is interesting that anatomically the TMJ almost mirrors the pelvis when viewed in a certain way. I will often work with the TMJ procedure when a client is not responding significantly to direct work on the pelvis or lower back as this may bring relief. Problems that may be caused by TMJ imbalance When the TMJ is out of balance an individual may experience all sorts of problems, some of these may include: • Allergies / Hay fever • Asthma symptoms • Upper respiratory tract problems • Congestion in upper

• • • • • • • • • • • • • •

respiratory tract Sinus problems Swollen glands Sore throats Neck problems Eye sight problems Ear problems including tinnitus Teeth grinding Teeth crowding Clicking jaw Migraines Headaches Hormonal imbalance TMJ syndrome Issues with facial symmetry

The Bowen Technique and the TMJ procedure The Bowen Technique offers two procedures that work directly with the TMJ and that can be used to address some of the problems listed above. The advanced TMJ can be used to address more long standing or stubborn TMJ problems.

Light moves are made under the mouth and around the neck area, the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) which sits at either side of the neck is gently massaged which helps to drain the lymph in this area. The SCM muscle is like a big tube that sits at either side of the neck and can often become congested and painful. Directly working with this muscle alone can often relive neck pain and sinus type problems. After the SCM has been worked several moves around the neck and throat area are applied. The next part of the procedure has the client placing a finger between their teeth, which opens the joint so we can make a light move over it in order to effect the fascia beneath. Gentle moves are then made behind and around the ear. Lebury Focus

The advanced TMJ procedure also applies a light move over the face near the cheek bone which effects the masseter muscle which influences the bite and jaw movement. The advanced procedure will also have an impact upon the vagus nerve which has nerve tracks to many different body systems so in this respect is a significant element to consider when working with this procedure. Exercise to help strengthen the TMJ • Open your mouth about one inch wide • Place one hand under your jaw • With the hand under your jaw push against the jaw and resist the pressure for 6 seconds then relax • Repeat the above 5 x

NB: If you are in doubt concerning the balance of your TMJ do not attempt this exercise.

onveyancing, the buying and selling of property, is one of the largest areas of risk within law firms and for this reason the public are best to trust local experts, says Ledbury based DF Legal. With the property market now buoyant again after some tough years following the crash, John Daniels, Senior Partner at DF Legal, said the public need to make sure conveyancing is handled correctly to prevent stress, possible legal action and the potential of the move falling through. “The Legal Ombudsman deals with many complaints about poor conveyancing, so it is safer

to deal with trusted experts who have considerable conveyancing experience in their teams,” he said. “Good law firm’s process searches correctly, flag up potential risks and keep the client well informed at all times, which is a million miles away from the service many home movers are now getting,” he added.

The Farmer & The Mule An old hillbilly farmer had a wife who nagged him unmercifully. From morning 'til night she was always complaining about something. The only time he got any relief was when he was out plowing with his old mule ... he plowed a lot.

Immediately, his wife began nagging him again. Complain, nag, complain, nag - it just went on and on. All of a sudden, the old mule lashed out with both hind feet, caught her smack in the back of the head. Killed her dead on the spot.

At the funeral several days later, the minister noticed something rather odd. When a woman mourner would approach the old farmer, he would listen for a minute, then nod his head in agreement; but when a man mourner approached him, he would listen for a minute, then shake his head in disagreement. This was so consistent, the minister decided to ask the old farmer about it. So after the funeral, the minister spoke to the old farmer, and asked him why he nodded his head and agreed with the women, but always shook his head and disagreed with all the men. The old farmer said, 'Well, the women would come up and say something about how nice my wife looked, or how pretty her dress was, so I'd nod my head in agreement.' 'And what about the men?' the minister asked.

RUNNING For Fitness – how do I start?

R

unning is becoming one of the most popular ways to keep fit but how do you start if you live in Ledbury? Sally Smart, who ran in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, has brought a new running initiative to the local community. Sally, in conjunction with Ledbury Harriers, now runs a Couch to 5k beginners running course. As a UK athletics coach, Sally promotes the benefits of running for people like Kirsty Tyler who started Couch to 5k on her own. Kirsty is delighted that the Harriers

Hi, my name is Amy Marshall - you may know me from ALM Fitness - and I'd like to tell you about 'Brave the Shave', and why I chose to take part in it. During August, Macmillan Cancer support ran a campaign called ‘Brave the Shave’, where people shave off their hair to raise money to go towards supporting people with cancer. By braving the shave and raising money, Macmillan Cancer Support can be there for people with cancer and their families. Whether it's help with money worries, advice about work, listening when people just want to talk or have difficult questions, Macmillan is there. Why I did it My best friend asked me if I'd like to take part in ‘Brave the Shave’ and support her in

38

this challenge. This came at a time when a client of mine had recently told me she'd just found out she has breast cancer. So not only did I want to support my friend but I also wanted to support my client, and also millions of other cancer sufferers around the world. When I first agreed to take part I didn’t really think about it, but as the day grew closer I became more and more nervous, but I just reminded myself of the fact that I chose to shave my hair to raise money for a great cause,

whereas so many people don’t have that choice. Money Raised I set a target of £500 and I managed to reach that target and surpass it by far! The current total to date is £2170.53 and I am absolutely overwhelmed and speechless by everyone’s kind words and support. I know I have surpassed my original target, but why not try and raise as much as possible. If you’d like to donate to such a great cause then please visit: www.bravetheshave.org.uk/ shavers/amy-marshall

Vet Talk

with Martin Leith BVetMed MRCV

As part of our support for charity, we are donating this month’s advertisement in the Ledbury Focus to The Guide Dogs.

National Guide Dog Week all the dog’s records are up to date. The Guide Dog Owner is not out of pocket and can enjoy independence and mobility like everyone else, assisted by a fit and healthy companion!

As part of the greatly diverse work that we do, we also support several local guide dogs. National Guide Dog week is from 3rd October to 11th October; if you would like to support this charity your Ledbury/Malvern representative is Debbie Pitts who can be contacted on 07770 891918. Before a guide dog is matched and trained with a visually impaired owner, the dog must be as fit and healthy as possible. Throughout its training, each dog is given a number of veterinary checks including an eye check with a veterinary ophthalmologist. This ensures that they are ready for their working life ahead. Guide dogs are fed a premium diet and this has to be managed carefully due to the nature of the dog’s work. Guide dogs are allowed access into a lot of areas pet dogs are not, so hygiene has to be a top priority. Each dog is given a maximum weight it should not exceed, and Guide Dog Owners are given advice on how to maintain this. All guide dogs are routinely vaccinated, wormed and de-flead. When guide dogs come into the surgery for veterinary treatment, we continue with the dog’s health regime, however although the Guide

Guide Dogs is a registered charity which receives no government funding, and the lifetime cost of a dog is around £50,000, so why not get involved with the Ledbury & Malvern Branch and help with some FUNdraising. Dog Owner legally owns the dog, the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association pays for all of the dog’s veterinary costs throughout its working life. Each dog has a Dog care and Welfare Advisor allocated to them who helps the owner with any health questions or issues related to their dog. The Advisor can contact us for advice and is on hand to help with any decisions with the Guide Dog Owner, including the more difficult ones. Guide dogs are given a free six monthly health check by a vet to ensure they are fit for work. To ensure accurate records are kept, they have a health book that vets complete and send in to their nearest Guide Dog training School, where the bills are processed and paid. The health history is then added to the Guide Dogs’ computer system so

CAL Carnival Ring & Ride Shuttle Carries on in the Rain!

T

he damp conditions did not deter the volunteer drivers from Community Action Ledbury on Bank Holiday Monday. A team of four kept the two minibuses going all day from 10am until 5pm, collecting visitors to Ledbury from the Ross Road Car Park and delivering them to the Co-op, and reversing the process on the way home. Most of CAL’s services are actually provided by volunteers and new recruits are always welcome to join the happy band.

a safe journey. Using volunteers helps to keep the costs down so a half day trip in a 16 passenger minibus can cost as little as £45 to Labels, whilst a day trip to the NEC would cost about £155.

on the Ring & Ride Hotline 01531 635503. Newly appointed Ring & Ride Co-ordinator Colin Rowberry is also available every morning to explain the service and to talk to new recruits.

All trips provide a door-todoor service if required. Both minibuses have a lift at the back for those that can’t make it up the steps and can carry wheelchair passengers. If you have a couple of hours a week to spare, give Minibus Co-ordinator Clive Gunn a call on 01531 635339 for a chat any morning from 9am to 1pm.

Drivers are well re-imbursed for their costs and the Booking Desk volunteers are fully trained to match the bookings to the available drivers given at least two working days’ notice.

Most minibus drivers only need to be available half a day a week to keep local groups, clubs and societies on the move. Some of the work is collecting members for regular meetings and activities while the rest is for one off trips to Labels, The Hop Pocket and the like.

The regular Ring & Ride service is also dependant on volunteers. Forty drivers make their cars available to take the scheme members to medical, social or shopping trips. Once registered, a user is charged only £4.20 for a return doorto-door trip within Ledbury.

All the volunteer minibus drivers are trained and tested to ensure

The bookings are also taken by volunteers

Message from Police Inspector Bob Barnett

A

s summer is drawing to a close (what summer!) the nights are drawing in and unfortunately more than bats come out in the dark. West Mercia Police will be launching its annual ‘Lighting Up’ campaign during October. When you leave your house remember to lock it securely, as well as leave some lights on. If you are going away or know you will be back after dark, use timer switches as an effective tool to turn lights on. A lit house is always a deterrent to anyone thinking of stealing from you. They can be purchased quite reasonably from most supermarkets or DIY outlets as well as via the internet.

Partners And Communities Together (PACT) meetings are regular meetings organised jointly between the Safer Neighbourhood Policing Teams, local Councillors and partners. PACT meetings are your chance to raise issues affecting your local area.

Paving

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

This month I will be looking at ways to use paving and how to lay it with the best results, with the three different ways to lay paving from a cheap and fast way up to the belt and braces for laying.

Option 1 Is on a dry mix of sand; this is where it is screened off and after the correct sub-base is put down depending on the type of traffic going over it, but minimum of 3” type 1 compacted, then a screed of 2” of sand. The slabs are then laid on top of this and haunched up, which is a concrete mix put around the outside of the slabs to hold them all together. The advantage of this is that it is very cheap and quick to do. The disadvantage is ants getting in and moving the sand about, which obviously will move eventually, and the slabs then becoming loose. Also weeds can grow up through the gaps. Option 2 Five Spot - a lot of builders do this; putting the same sub-base down and then getting five lots of sand/ cement mix, making five blobs and squidging the cement down onto those five blobs. This makes it more sturdy but does increase gravity underneath. These blobs can move when a lot of traffic goes over where slabs become wobbly and loose, but this option would last longer than the first one. Option 3 The best way, but the most expensive way is on a full bed of mortar; sand and cement mixed together, which is like laying concrete and them putting the slabs into that. This holds all-as-one and therefore is a much stronger option and will last a lot longer.

Event for your diary:

Hergest Croft Gardens and Flower Fair 11th October at Kington. A plant show for the keen gardener set in lovely mature gardens.

66

Choosing your slabs There is quite a range of slabs out there; it doesn’t really matter which ones you choose – obviously some will

last longer than others. The disadvantage with concrete over natural stone is they will weather in time, so if you ever damage one and need to replace it obviously the rest of the patio has weathered down and mixes and patterns change all the time so theoretically you might not be able to get the same match. Also with concrete ones have a smooth edge but if you ever need to cut them for steps etc obviously you will see a concrete edge to them when they are cut. The natural stone ones when cut you will still see natural stone. Natural stone; there is a lot of variations from York Paving which is very, very expensive down to Indian Paving. These come in a random pattern. Some people like to see the lines, but if you are doing a random pattern you have no more than four slabs in a line before you put one across the line to split it up otherwise this becomes a weak point in your patio.

should be approximately the thickness of a washing line clip.

Colours There are seven different colours of Indian Paving ranging from almost slate all the way through to virtually a Cotswold colour. Some have fossils in (leaf and fern fossils). That is the beauty of Indian Paving and obviously it is natural stone: the colours do vary quite a bit so it is worth getting it checked out first. When laying paving up against a house, if you are attempting to do it yourself, the secret is in the preparation and getting the levels in correctly first. Keeping it two courses down from damp proof is the legal requirement, so keep that in mind if you are buying or selling a house. The easiest way to overcome this is to put a gravel trap in against the side of the house. This is basically a gravel gulley that is plumbed Pointing into the drain so no dampness can get close to the When pointing you use a semi-wet mix to put into the house and then the patio should be done on a 1 to gaps; this is where a patio can look really good or really 100 fall away from the house. This then sorts out any naff and it is simply down to time. You are better off not puddling problem on the paving. rushing it and really pushing the pointing mix which is If you have an event please let me know. If you have a on a 4 to 1 for sand/cement into the gaps. Some people problem in the garden then please contact me and I will like to bind it a bit better with some rendering sand and do my best to answer your questions. building sand together. It is down to preference really, but sharp sand isn’t any good because it is very bitty Next month I will look at choosing a tree for your and hard to get between the gaps. nternational cooperation was very much in evidence when the Ledbury Rotary Club facilitated their first Youth Exchange as part of the reciprocal agreement between Ledbury and Osaka.

Visiting Scholar, Kyoko Okura, was met by Rotarians at Birmingham airport and transported to Ledbury to join Georgie and her family.

With family members and Rotarians, Kyoko had the opportunity to improve her spoken English when she visited Oxford, London, and many local heritage sites such as the Cathedrals in Worcester, Hereford, Gloucester and Tewksbury Abbey, taking in the Castles at Eastnor, Hampton Court and Goodrich. In the Osaka school curriculum, Kyoko is studying Shakespeare and was thrilled to have a very full day in Stratford visiting all the famous Shakespearean sites. She enjoyed a proper English tea party at which the Rotary President, Bernie Robertson, gave a speech in Japanese. Bernie remarked that the purpose of the exchange scheme is to develop international cooperation for mutual benefit coupled with fellowship and friendship between countries. This first venture into Youth Exchange proved an enormous success for the two teenage girls, and both Georgie and Kyoko agreed they would never forget the amazing and precious experiences afforded them through the Rotary Youth Exchange Programme. orn 21st April 1926, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York, became Queen Elizabeth II upon accession to the throne in 1952.

nannies etc. The exception to this has always been the Christmas holidays which are usually spent at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk surrounded by family and corgis.

Not only the leader of the Commonwealth but head of state of 16 nations, head of the armed forces and the Church of England, we sometimes forget that she has also been a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and now a great-grandmother.

Classical stereotypes of the 1950s were discarded with the Queen being the bread winner of the family, and retaining her family name of Windsor, although some years later it was changed to Mountbatten-Windsor. She has encountered and overcome some chauvinistic views about the proper place of women in society; her father, for one, was against her participation in the war when she drove a truck and was trained as a mechanic. Her Majesty has met each of these challenges with a sense of purpose and firm resolution and has made changes to the monarchy to move with the times in reducing royal expenses, changing the royal succession acts and opening up Buckingham palace to the public.

As a mother and probably one of the first modern working mums, that ever present struggle to balance her domestic and familial responsibilities with those of her professional obligations has meant that her family has generally come second despite helpers,

The engagement between Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten RN was announced on the 9th July, 1947. Prince Philip of Greece & Denmark joined the Royal Navy in 1939, and in February 1947 became a naturalised British subject.

Her Majesty is now the oldest serving monarch worldwide and Britain’s longest serving ruler, having surpassed Queen Victoria’s reign of 63 years and 7 months on 9th September 2015.

abeth II ... Queen, wife and mother

article by Brian Joyce

A constant throughout her reign, Her Majesty stated “Prince Philip is, I believe, well known for declining compliments of any kind. But throughout he has been a constant strength and guide.” The Queen and Prince Phillip have four children: Prince Charles (first in line and heir to the throne), Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. In addition to four children, the Queen and Prince Phillip have eight grand-children, and with the recent births of Prince George and Princess Charlotte to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, they also have four great-grand-children … family gatherings are now a very crowded affair, methinks? The Queen has been married for over 68 years and is now approaching the grand age of 90 on her next birthday (unofficial, since the Queen has two each year). This lady has dedicated her life to the service of our country, epitomised by her speech at the age of 21 in which she stated, “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our imperial family to which we all belong.” Now, that is commitment. This service has seen the Queen visit over 116 different countries around the world and Lebury Focus

all without a passport – one on the perks of being a monarch! Sadly, things have not always gone smoothly for the royal family as demonstrated during the annus horribilis in 1992 with marriages breaking down, the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997 and then the deaths of both the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret in 2002. Yet, for all of those challenges, the commitment and dedication remains, as this remarkable lady of style and elegance fulfills her duties with willingness, sense of duty and a smile. Always stylishly dressed, the Queen makes a point of never wearing a wide-brimmed hat so that her people might see her clearly when out and about in public. I wonder just how many hands she has shaken in the line of duty (mine amongst them), speeches made, how many banquets and dinners she has hosted and attended, and all in the name of this grand and glorious country. What a lady – long may she continue to reign. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has set the bar extremely high and will be a very hard act to follow. October 2015

New Job ...

my notes...

A passenger in a taxi heading for the airport, leaned over to ask the driver a question and gently tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb and stopped inches from a large plate glass window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab. Then, the shaking driver said, "Are you OK? I'm so sorry, but you scared the living daylights out of me." The badly shaken passenger apologized to the driver and said, "I didn't realize that a mere tap on the shoulder would startle someone so badly." The driver replied, "No, no, I'm the one who is sorry, it's entirely my fault. Today is my very first day driving a cab ... I've been driving a hearse for the last 25 years!"
