Hello Readers... Welcome to the October magazine . . . and the start of autumn. The nights are drawing in and there’s a definite chill in the air – time to break out the long johns and winter woollies!

October is the month of Halloween, and on Saturday 28th October Ledbury will be having its own Halloween party, complete with “ghoulies and ghosties, and longleggedy beasties, and things that go bump in the night” - you can read more about this in the centre pages. And whilst on the subject of Halloween, here’s a piece of trivia that might interest you: many people think that the custom of celebrating Halloween and Trick or Treating are American, but in fact both are much older than that and originated in ancient Celtic times. Having mentioned Trick or Treat, as much fun as this can be for the youngsters, please do read the West Mercia Police article on page 38 and take heed of the advice given on this particular subject. Moving on, for those of you who would like an exercise class with a difference, then perhaps Silver Swans is for you. On 1st October Susan Melvin will be holding an introductory workshop for anyone who would like to try dance as an alternative to conventional exercise classes. On Saturday 7th October there’ll be a Fun Dog Walk at Croome in aid of National Guide Dog – have a look at page 14 for more details. Then on 28th October, Tenby Male Choir are holding a charity concert in aid of Acorns Charity. And if you have a look at the What’s On page, you’ll see there’s lots more happening in and around Ledbury during October. That’s all until next month.
Betty

n 1st September Angela Rippon CBE was announced as ambassador for the launch of a Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Silver Swans ballet programme to inspire over 55’s to dance their way to fitness and health. Angela, who recently fronted a BBC programme How to Stay Young, stated that “dance is the exercise which ticks all the boxes, to give you the full mind and body workout. Dance is a way to ensure a long and healthy life; it keeps you supple, it’s an aerobic exercise, it gives you spatial awareness, it makes you use your brain, and it gives you some kind of social contact as well. I hope that men and women across the country will take up the Royal Academy of Dance’s invitation to become a Silver Swan.” Susan Melvin is one of only 120 ballet teachers to have recently undergone the RAD Silver Swans training and to hold a Silver Swans licence. Many will Ledbury Focus
know Susan as principal of the very successful ‘neat feet dancing’ school, retiring 4 years ago after 18 years of teaching and a lifetime of dancing. The dance studio is now home to Studiocrafts where she and a business partner (who helped make beautiful costumes for the shows), now run craft workshops, but the ballet barre has always remained, Susan has continued to dance and is ready come out of retirement to bring Silver Swans to Ledbury. Silver Swans, dance classes are tailored specifically for the over-55s, and taught exclusively by Silver Swan licensed qualified dance teachers who have trained to safely adapt ballet techniques for older adults. The training focuses on how to deliver a high quality ballet class for learners aged 55 and over. This is not an adult ballet class, but specially designed for mature dancers. You won't be standing next to a 30 year old who can still raise their leg to over 90%! It is aimed to work with you at your level. Susan herself falls into the
Silver Swans category and can vouch for the fact that dance keeps you more agile, mentally astute, aids balance, posture, co-ordination, stamina and improves mood. Susan is offering a free Silver Swans taster class on Silver Sunday 1st October from 11am to 12 noon. This will be an introductory workshop rather than a full teaching class as the established classes will inevitably be led, modified and grow with the ongoing group of Swans. Silver Swans classes will then start on Monday 9th October from 11.30am to 12.30pm. Classes will be held at Studiocrafts, Ground Floor, 5a The Southend, Ledbury (next to the Royal Oak Hotel). Contact: isa.melvin@outlook. com or phone 01531 634124 to secure your place. For further information on what is going on at Studiocrafts see our website:

It is so rare to be offered a meal on airlines these days that I was surprised to hear the flight attendant ask the man sitting in front of me, "Would you like dinner?" "What are my choices?" he responded. "Yes or no," she replied.
***** What a good idea . . . !! I was visiting a friend who could not find her mobile phone. After several minutes of searching, her young daughter said, "You know what they should invent? A phone that stays connected to its base so it never gets lost".
***** American Presidents . . . past Remember those glory days when the worst president the US had ever had was Shrub (aka George Dubya Bush junior) . . . oh joy, oh bliss! But all was not well in the US of A. Terrorists captured three ex-presidents - Bush senior, Bill Clinton and Dubya - and took them out into the yard to shoot them. Bush senior is up first and is led out into the middle of the yard. Just in time, he looks up and shouts ‘Hurricane!' Everyone looks up and while they’re distracted, Bush senior runs to the fence, jumps over and escapes. Clinton takes due note and when it’s his turn, he looks up, shouts ‘Tornado!’ and escapes the same way. Dubya has also been watching and thinks to himself ‘I need a catastrophe, I need a catastrophe’, and when it’s his turn, he looks up and shouts ‘Fire!’
. . . and present During a lull between the speeches at the recent presidential swearing-in ceremony, Melania Trump leaned over to chat with the Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson. "You know, I bought Donald a parrot for Christmas. That bird is so smart, Donald has already taught him to say over two hundred words!" "Wow, that's pretty impressive," said Tillerson, "but you do realize that he just speaks the words . . . he doesn't really understand what they mean." "Oh, I know that," Melania replied, "But then neither does the parrot."

Ledbury Honours Merchant Navy Day
L
edbury Town held a commemorative Merchant Navy Day Service and despite the rain, a small crowd gathered to pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to salute their courage. As the Red Ensign fluttered over the war memorial, Veterans of the Merchant Navy, often referred to as the Forgotten Force, attended and present was 92-year-old Geoff Godsall of the Port Halifax Convoy. Geoff is the uncle of Carol Barnes, wife of Bob Barnes, former Mayor of Ledbury. Town criers Bill Turberfield and Clive Gunn led the procession which included the Lord Lieutenant Lady Darnley, Ledbury Mayor Elaine Fieldhouse, and other civic dignitaries, representatives from organisations such as the RLNI, Rotary and others, for the wreath laying ceremony, assisted by the smartly dressed cadets. During the service of prayers with hymns accompanied by the Forest of Dean based Berry Hill Brass Band, a personal message from HRH Edward, The Earl of Wessex was read. Additional music was provided by Brendan and Roger, located on the steps of St Katherine’s, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude Refreshments were served at the Burgage Hall following the remembrance service, with cakes and sandwiches having been donated to support this historic event held in Ledbury to commemorate Merchant Navy Day. Congratulations to Cllr Jean Simpson and her team for organising this remembrance service and honouring the Merchant Navy article and photographs by Jan Long 01531 650036 / 07969 836341 j.long782@btinternet.com

Gardens
T
here are over 16 million gardens in the UK and each has the potential to become a fantastic habitat for wildlife. Whether small or large, every garden can provide a home for many different wildlife species and together can form a habitat network running through our cities, towns and villages. All gardens provide slightly different habitats depending on their location, size and style but typically contain
22
some of the following: flowering plants, sustenance for pollinating insects; bare ground, for ground nesting bees; shrubs and hedgerows giving cover to small mammals, birds, amphibians and invertebrates; nooks and crannies in sheds, fences and brickwork which shelter overwintering butterflies and all sorts of other minibeasts. Wildlife to spot Many people enjoy feeding and watching the birds in their garden and many species thrive in this habitat. Robins, blackbirds, finches, tits and sparrows are common visitors but keep a close eye and you might be surprised who drops in! Though hedgehogs are on the
decline, many people still have a resident ‘hog which are a delight to see – especially as they will munch up a lot of slugs! Other small mammals include mice and voles, not often spotted but sometimes given away by a rustling in the undergrowth. Frogs, newts and toads may also visit gardens, especially if there are damp shady corners or a pond. Toads in fact spend much of their life on land, returning to ancestral breeding ponds only to spawn. The list of invertebrates – bugs and beasties – is endless but all play their role in the garden’s ecology. Love your Wildlife Gardens! There are lots of easy ways to improve your garden for wildlife.

Here are five of the best for autumn: 1. Create a log pile (or get creative and create a stumpery complete with ferns and ivies!) where a hedgehog might hibernate or invertebrates hide away. Include some decaying a widerofvariety species – Yellow Flag -wood photofor courtesy LizzieofWilberforce maybe even a stage beetle with luck! 2. Don’t rush to cut back hedges which are fruit bearing. Hips, hawes and berries sustain many species of wildlife through autumn and winter so wait as long as possible before getting the trimmers out! Autumn and winter is also a good time to plant a new hedge. A hedge is far more wildlife friendly than a fence so if you are replacing fencing, consider swapping to a living boundary of blackthorn, hawthorn and rose. 3. Leave seed heads once flowering is over. These can look very beautiful and provide another source of food for birds. Particularly good seed heads are found on globe thistles, lavender, verbena bonariensis, sunflowers, teasels, hollyhock and honesty. 4. Leave windfalls. Herefordshire is a county of orchards and larger gardens often include one or more apple trees. Leave windfalls on the ground for thrushes and other birds and mammals – or move onto a bird feeder. 5. Don’t clean out the shed! Many species which have enjoyed your garden over the summer will see your shed as the perfect bug hotel in which to spend the winter. Overwintering butterflies such as the peacock and comma will enjoy the shed’s shelter. Ledbury Focus

Seeing is believing . . .
T
he season of cobweb lace hanging in the hedgerows is upon us. Berries glow from golden leaved hawthorn and the holly looks ripe for Christmas already. The hornets are no longer hawking through the flowerbeds hunting for the bees, or the queens searching for nectar to help her through her long hibernation. By now her workers are all dead. Their job done for another year, the next generation dependant entirely on the sleeping hornet queen, motion-less in some dark, safe, crevice, waiting for the warmth of next spring to rouse her from her sleep to begin the cycle of their lives all over again. The bats I met at dusk one August evening, seeming to fly straight at me as though they were fighter squadrons, then veering away at the last minute, have closed their leather like Ledbury Focus
wings and hang in suspended animation until the first warm evening when they will fly again. Then they will ‘hold me in awe once more as I watch them swoop around me. And if you were plagued by gnats this summer, here’s a reason to help them: one pipistrelle will eat three thousand gnats a night. Three thousand less to bite you. As the raspberry crop came to an end, so the blackberries began to ripen, but I had to be patient this year. A cold, wet late July and August delayed the harvest and I was not picking really scrummy fruit until September. The delay may well have begun in May when north westerlies swept across the hill holding everything back for at least two weeks. Flowers remained tantalisingly closed and blossom on some of the apple trees was ripped off just as it opened which meant no apples at all on some of the more
exposed trees. And now the last of the blackberries are hard and bitter, gathering mould as they shrivel on the brambles. The greengages though have excelled themselves, the best crop ever and they were lovely too. I was not the only one to enjoy them either as I discovered while working in the garden one morning. Anyone with dogs will know that if you take them with you blackberry picking they will enjoy the odd berry or two. My golden retrievers used to ‘help’ pick, although none of the blackberries they took ever ended up in the basket. But what I saw that August morning was a first: one of the whippets standing on an old upturned dinghy eating greengages. I was so amazed that I rushed to get my camera to record the event because, as they say . . . seeing is believing. Article and photograph by Geraldine Holbourn

WINE: If It Sparkles…
S
parkling wines add a certain ‘something’ to a dining occasion and, indeed, are extremely popular for celebrations, parties, functions and events, etc. I searched various supermarkets and located numerous, splendid, sparkling wines, including champagnes, which are chosen regularly. Waitrose supermarkets are the food retail division of the John Lewis partnership. There are many outlets, which now include some small convenience stores, too. The start was founded, during 1904, by Wallace Waite, Arthur Rose and David Taylor. Following David Taylor’s departure from the business the surnames of the remaining founders were combined to create the Waitrose name. Waitrose Prosecco (NV) Italy is a very popular, easy drinking, smooth production. This classic Italian sparkling wine is fresh and fruity for the mouthfeel and palate sensation. Chosen a lot as a great apéritif, prosecco is also loved as a spritz with soda water and mixed with various liqueurs, etc. Waitrose Cava Brut, Castillo Perelada (NV) Spain is another regular selection, for many. I find this fruity cava to have excellent quality and elegance. It is produced in partnership with Castillo Perelada, a renowned and much-respected family-owned winery in Spain that has a history dating back to the 14th century. Ledbury Focus
Waitrose Rosé Champagne (NV) has an elegance and complements many dining tables, on numerous occasions. For a fruity rosé fizz, I find this wine perfect. Produced by the House of Alexandre Bonnet, this splendid pinot noir production has a beautiful colour and is an ideal apéritif, as well as often being enjoyed with a meal. Fantastic to add colour and sparkle to al fresco dining. Waitrose Brut Special Réserve Vintage Champagne I find very much suited to the ‘top table’. This multi award winner is both full and rich, being greatly appreciated on the mouthfeel, followed by a superb and impressive palate. The long finish adds to the pleasures of this production. Waitrose, which possesses a royal warrant to supply groceries, is a retailer offering food and beverages of outstanding quality. These sparkling selections, with their fine and persistent perlages, are just some of the many available, that appeal to me. Take time and pleasure to locate your favourites. www.waitrose.com As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

A POSY OF POPPIES Calling all Artists & Crafts People
W
e are now only a year away from the Armistice Centenary in 2018. We had a good response to our article in February and there’s lots of interest in using arts and crafts to both remember and celebrate. That was the first feedback - get it the right way round. Let’s remember on 11th November and then celebrate the end of hostilities with exhibitions etc. The idea of ‘a spot of guerrilla knitting’ has developed too - again, lots of support but with modifications. For various reasons, the Diocese does not normally allow display material on the railings outside the Almshouses. This is a very specific event and exceptionally, they have agreed that we can display poppies on the posts, rather than all the railings. Knitters and Crochet-ers are already at work. Bergere de France have kindly undertaken to sponsor the yarn – via Bodkins in the Homend. Patterns are being shared and needles are clicking. Art societies are creating work on a poppy or WWI theme. The Poetry Festival has said they will make poppies the theme for their ‘Call for Poems’ next year. We could go on.

The Bowen Technique for Stress, Tension and Balancing the Nervous System by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DIpM, BTAA, BAUK

tress and tension seem to be abundant in our modern day lives and we all experience varying levels of this on a daily basis. Some stress is crucial to our existence however problems occur when this becomes our dominant way of perceiving life. This is referred to as chronic stress and can have a significant impact on health and well-being. I share here some information on why the body responds the way it does when faced with stressful situations. I will also share some useful tools and techniques that can help to balance the nervous system when you are faced with stressful situations or are feeling tension. The nervous system Having a balanced nervous system is crucial to good health, in fact, I believe that this is where all health begins it dictates to the whole body as to how it will respond and behave. When we are stressed our nervous system is working in its sympathetic state which means it is geared and ready for fight or flight. When we are balanced we are in our parasympathetic state which means our nervous system is geared for rest and repair.
The stress response The stress response is the body’s way of responding to a threat when we feel threatened our nervous system responds to this by flooding our bodies with stress hormones including adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones get the body revved up to take flight or to stay and fight. This response is a primitive one hard-wired into us. It was necessary for our survival when we were presented with life threatening situations like predators! Unfortunately, for our health, the same response is firing up when we are faced with things that are not life threatening and this stress response is happening much more regularly. We are now in a situation where our bodies are flooded with stress hormones on a regular basis which causes all sorts of problems. Symptoms of being in a stressed state Some common symptoms may include: ▪▪ Dry mouth ▪▪ Increased heart rate / palpitations ▪▪ Feelings of dread /doom ▪▪ Digestive problems ▪▪ Impaired immune system

Anxiety Depression Breathing difficulties Changes in eating patterns Changes in behavior Feeling overwhelmed / overloaded ▪▪ Dizziness/light headedness How the Bowen Technique can help The Bowen Technique works directly with the nervous system by applying light moves along various points on the body including the erector spinae muscle situated either side of the spine. In my Bowen toolkit, I have several procedures that I can use with individuals struggling with stress, tension, and anxiety. These techniques can be used to address the different symptoms of stress but essentially, they all work to get the body back into balance and back into the parasympathetic state. Some of these procedures include: TMJ – This excellent procedure works by helping to align the tempero mandibular joint. I use this a lot for general hormone balance. Vagus nerve procedure – The vagus nerve is connected to pretty much every body system, it is crucial to having a balanced body and nervous system. Respiratory procedure – This procedure works with respiratory and digestive issues. Tricep procedure and Quadricep procedure - When the stress response fires in the body Ledbury Focus
adrenaline is sent to the triceps and quadriceps. So both of these procedures are useful in treating stress and its associated problems. Kidney procedure – I use this procedure in practice regularly, I have found that it helps energise the body and balance Kidney energy and function. How I work in practice I often use a combination of the therapies that I work with in practice in order to work with stress and associated symptoms. Often the trauma of a stressful event is locked into the body at a cellular level. Bowen seems to work well to release these memories and patterns that can be causing problems, sometimes even years after the event. I may also offer advice and test clients for specific remedies and nutritional supplements that could help with the symptoms that they are experiencing. I will also most likely recommend selfhelp techniques that clients can use for themselves on a daily basis to help ease their symptoms. Self-help tips to balance your nervous system Breathing technique: This technique interrupts the stress cycle quickly so is great for situational stress that you want to resolve fast, here’s how: ▪▪ Bring your hands together so your palms are gently touching (almost in a prayer position) ▪▪ Breathe in and out through your mouth deeply moving your diaphragm so your belly moves out as you breathe in and in as you breathe out. Do
this for ten seconds. ▪▪ As you do the breathing you could also imagine the stress leaving your body Useful remedies: ▪▪ Rescue remedy / 5 flower remedy – This is a great remedy to have in your medicine cupboard or handbag. It is a combination of 5 of the Bach flower remedies and really does help to calm the nervous system. Use when you are feeling like you need some extra support or after a difficult situation. ▪▪ Mimulus – A Bach flower remedy used to treat fears, particularly fears of known things. This remedy is useful for things like upcoming exams, driving tests, meetings or any event that you fear. Nutritional deficiencies: Sometimes when we are deficient in certain vitamins and minerals the symptoms of stress can be exacerbated. A mineral that is often deficient and that can be used to very good effect in treating symptoms of stress is Magnesium. B vitamins are also essential in supporting the nervous systems. De-stress (af/fe) points: The de-stress points are located on the forehead and the middle of the head. When these points are held, the stress response is diluted. These points are physiologically wired into our stress and fear response and when held help reduce stress, anxiety, and fear. To download the De-stress technique visit my website or drop me a line.

needs doing once every four to seven years depending on how well they are growing and the condition they are in.
Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop
Pruning up an Herbaceous Border A
lot of people have herbaceous plants either mixed in with shrubs, or in a designated border. As you probably already know, herbaceous plants are the colourful ones that sprout up from the ground or as a perennial wooded stem that then sprouts out from the stem. A lot of herbaceous die down to ground level, but just before they do so in this Autumn weather, now is the time to mark and divide before the ground becomes too soft.
56
Dividing clump forming herbaceous plants Clump forming herbaceous plants are the ones that spread from the base and get thicker and thicker, and can usually be divided up – it is probably wise to carry out a little research on which ones can tolerate this before you start. However, normally if they are clump forming, either from a corm or a root stock such as Crocosmia or Hemerocallis (Day Lily), the easiest thing to do is to put a sheet down and dig the herbaceous plants up. This really
Then literally put a spade between them and cut them into four, planting one quarter back into the existing hole. Another quarter can be planted up in another section of your herbaceous border, and I suggest giving the other two away to a gardening club or friends. The reason for not putting the other two back into your border is that they are clump forming and pretty dominant, which means you could end up with the same plants virtually taking over the whole bed. An example of a plant that would do this is the Japanese Anemone. Planning your planting Always mark up and take lots of photographs of your bed beforehand and afterwards because the herbaceous plants will die back to ground level and you will forget exactly where they are. Bulbs This is also the best time to buy bulbs if you want to add bulbs to your border because you can work out exactly where to put them. If you have a photograph of the border with all the heights in, this will help you work out where to put the bulbs so that they are not hidden.
To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk
In my experience, many people make the mistake of putting, for example, daffodils in and then all the herbaceous stuff grows up in front of the bulbs so that it obscures them from view. Protecting your herbaceous plants Again, now is the time to start looking at protecting some of the herbaceous stuff from frost, such as Gunnera Manicata (very big herbaceous prickly rhubarb), which needs its crowns covered. The best way of doing this is cutting all the existing leaves off, turn them upside down on the crown and then cut the stalks off the leaves, using them for weight. This is a natural way of protecting them, which would normally happen when the leaves dropped, but you are just ensuring maximum protection. Dahlias With things like Dahlias, you have the option of lifting them and bringing them inside, or protecting them. The disadvantage of leaving them where they are is if you get a very wet winter and you have boggy ground, this would either rot them or, if they
do manage to survive, slugs can then attack them. The best way is to mark them with a flowerpot, put dry straw into the flowerpot and put that over the top of the Dahlias when they have finished flowering. Getting your heights correct is most important. Obviously you don’t want to divide something like low growing Sedum and end up having it at the back of the border where you don’t see it or it can end up getting smothered out, so getting the correct spacing is essential.
Why divide? The reason for dividing is that clump forming plants know they are doing well by their nature and they will produce fewer flowers. By dividing the plant it then thinks it is under attack and will theoretically produce more flowers the following year.
Shrubs Now is the time to carry out an autumn prune, and thin up some of your shrubs. If you have got herbaceous plants in amongst your shrubs, once you have taken your photograph you can see how the herbaceous stuff is growing into the shrub or vice-versa and you can prune accordingly, so that next year they are not so intertwined with one another and you can maximise the appeal of your plants.
Remember for spring time Don’t forget in the spring, as the herbaceous stuff starts coming up, to watch out for slugs (put pellets down), but also feed when the stuff starts moving (granular feed such as Growmore is good because it is slow releasing down to the roots and works its way up). Do not feed at this time of the year because it will encourage the plant to put on new growth that will potentially then be attacked by the frost.
If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Annual MOT for Rabbits
M
ost people think that rabbits are easy pets to look after, but actually there are numerous problems which affect rabbits. Many of these are preventable with regular checks and can be treated if noticed early. Wild rabbits are used to surviving on grass alone and don’t have the luxury of concentrate feeds. Grass is a high fibre, low calorie food which wild rabbits graze on for large parts of the day. Diets for captive rabbits should try to mimic the wild diet as much as possible to keep them healthy. All rabbits should have constant access to hay as this makes up the bulk of their required food. Rabbits should not be fed more than about one tablespoon of commercial rabbit food a day and muesli should be avoided, since rabbits will selectively feed and muesli has been linked to an increased risk of dental disease. It is much better to give about a tablespoon of pelleted food rather than muesli- style food to prevent selective feeding. You can also give a handful of some greens e.g cabbage, broccoli and kale in addition to commercial pellets. Treats should be avoided as these are bad for the teeth;
Ledbury Focus
small quantities of carrots and apples are quite acceptable. Rabbits’ teeth are constantly growing. In the wild eating grass has the effect of wearing away teeth at a constant rate and preventing dental problems. Pet rabbits can develop dental problems if not fed properly. Spurs can grow on the molars, causing ulceration in the mouth, which is painful to the rabbit and can stop them eating. If a rabbit has a painful mouth it may also stop grooming itself. A common sign of dental problems is fur matted with faeces around the back end. If this is left
unchecked and not cleaned then fly strike may develop. This is a potentially lethal condition where maggots eat away at the back end of the rabbit and is both painful and a route for infection to enter. If you suspect this please contact us as soon as possible for advice on treatment. With myxomatosis so prevalent in wild rabbits it is very important to keep up to date with vaccinations, which is also a great opportunity to have your rabbit checked over.

Safari Park Charged Up For Second Rhino Birth In Two Years . . .
W
est Midland Safari Park is celebrating the birth of a second baby southern white rhino in the space of 18 months and this time, it’s a girl! Following a lengthy pregnancy of 16 months, first-time mum, eight-year-old Keyah, gave birth to the cute youngster at 5:23pm on Friday 8th September. The long-awaited new arrival took around an hour to find her feet and was alert and feeding at around five hours old. The calf was separated briefly from her mum for a swift health check and at just 30 hours old, already weighed a whopping 70kg (11 stone)!
72
This birth is another great success for the Park and its white rhino breeding programme, following the arrival of the baby girl's halfbrother, Ekozu, in March last year. In the wild, southern white rhinos face a huge threat due to habitat loss and more commonly, poaching. Head Keeper of Ungulates, Lisa Watkins said, “The team are really pleased that all of their hard work has resulted in this fantastic healthy calf. Keyah has taken it in her stride and is proving to be a fantastic mother. The calf is feeding well and settling into the daily routines.”
the weather. Once settled, we will slowly introduce her to the rest of the crash, including her older halfbrother, Ekozu.” The chunky youngster is yet to be named, but keepers will choose a name beginning with ‘F,' as all the babies born at the Park in 2017 begin with this letter.
She continued, “With the current threats that rhinos are facing in the wild, this birth is even more important to the population as a whole. Breeding in zoological collections provides a valuable safety net for their wild counterparts.
This baby is the first female calf to be born at the Park for 15 years and is the newest addition to the Park’s small ‘crash’ of southern white rhinos, made up of four females and two males. Mum, Keyah, was born at CERZA Parc Zoologique Lisieux in France and came to the Safari Park in November 2011, as a recommendation from the European Endangered Species Programmes (EEP), to breed with dad, elevenyear-old Barney.
Over the next few weeks Keyah and the calf will get used to the great outdoors, first in the paddock and later in the reserves, depending on
The rhinos can be seen in the four-mile safari, which is included in the standard admission charge of £23.00 for adults, £18.00 for

Fantastic Ile De Re I
f you look for tranquillity on your holidays, then you should visit Ile De Re, a beautiful island accessed via a bridge from Rochelle, France. My husband, Michael, and I visited the island in September last year, when many of the tourists had left. We were astounded with the beauty of the place and the peace and quiet. The leafy squares and narrow streets with white painted houses and green shuttered windows looked like a dream to us. That was until we tried to turn a sharp bend towing our large caravan. The residents looked on in amusement as they

watched my husband delicately, with skill and care, manoeuvre around the corner, missing their homes with inches to spare! Our campsite was great and that evening we sat outside listening to birdsong as we watched the sun go down. What more can you ask? The island is flat and with such narrow streets that most visitors hire bikes. There are many cycle paths, and these will take you among some beautiful sights. On the one side you will be amazed by the fields of golden corn, and vineyards, whilst on the other side there are golden beaches and the vast blue Atlantic Ocean, with shimmering yachts. But, if you get saddle sore you can use your car to explore – you just need to take it slowly.

During Roman times Ile De Re was an archipelago, consisting of three small islands. The space between was mainly taken up with the salt marshes. This area is called Loix, and is one of my favourite places. This peninsula inside the islands is wild and natural, and you can explore the diversity and originality of the islands natural heritage. Today the Government of Ile De Re, still encourage the historic salt production. We found the salt marshes very interesting. We sat for a long while watching and photographing the men working the salt pans, gathering salt in the old way, as they have done for centuries. You can purchase the tiny bags of salt in the tourist shops in Saint Martins Bay or any of the other small towns along the coast.

On our visit to the winery, we tasted some delicious wines that are delicately blended with cognac. They say you have to visit the distillery to discover the secret of the mixing. We certainly did, and purchased several bottles to take home for special occasions. There are many interesting and entertaining places on the island to visit; the hotels are lovely and the beaches are safe and clean. If you would like more information just Goggle Ile De Re, and you will find what you are looking for. Our visit to the island was fantastic and one we will never forget.

A woman ran a red traffic light and crashed into a man's car. Both of their cars are demolished but amazingly neither of them was hurt. After they crawled out of their cars, the woman said, "Wow, just look at our cars! There's nothing left, but fortunately we are unhurt. This must be some kind of miracle!" The man replied, "I agree with you completely. It really is a miracle that neither of us was hurt!"
Solution to Hidato:
The woman continued, "And look at this, here's another miracle. My car is completely demolished, but my bottle of 75 year old scotch didn't break. This must be a sign that we are meant to drink this vintage delicacy and celebrate our good fortune." Then she handed the bottle to the man. The man nodded his head in agreement, opened the bottle, drank half of it and then handed it back to the woman. The woman took the bottle, put the cap back on and immediately handed it back to the man. The man asked, "Aren't you having any?" And the woman replied, "Nah. I think I'll just wait for the police."
