he Sattlerhof winery, hotel and restaurant, is located at Sudsteiermark and has grand vineyards producing an excellent range of impressive wines: classic Styrian wines, using selective, fully-ripened grapes include superb Sauvignon Blanc productions; very popular village wines have splendid Muskateller, a grape that is typical of the region; singlevineyard productions are regularly chosen by many connoisseurs and wine lovers, and aged Pfarrweingarten wines are only produced during the very best years. Gamlitz Sauvignon Blanc and Gamlitz Muskateller have wide appeal. Grapes from their Gamlitz vineyards are utilised for these popular productions. Very pleasant fruit bouquets greet the nasal senses, and a most acceptable mouthfeel and palate follows, for each. Ried Sernauberg Sauvignon Blanc has grapes grown from the single-vineyard site, Sernauberg. The bouquet leads to a sensuous

mouthfeel and the palate’s appreciation. This elegant wine is very good for ageing, as are a number of other productions from Sattlerhof, including Ried Kranachberg Sauvignon Blanc, which is impressively alluring. Also, very much appreciated are the Ried Pfarrweingarten wines, with their outstanding bouquets, full mouthfeels and palate sensations - great wines for ageing, too. These wines are a wonderful accompaniment to fish, seafood and a lot of cuisine, as well as being ideal to enjoy on their own. For a sweet wine may I suggest Trockenbeerenauslese Sauvignon Blanc. Again, grapes harvested selectively, by hand, plus the process for this wine, produces a delight to savour. Elegant, delicious and a perfect pairing with numerous desserts. A wealth of information about their full range can be found at www.sattlerhof.at Fink und Kotzian OG, in the Weinviertel, respects the traditions during the making of wines, as do many wine producers, whilst
venturing further, to enhance appearances, aromas and flavours. Gruner Veltliner productions are always very popular and Ried Hintern Dorf, plus Ried Konigsberg are regularly choseny. Riesling Ried Hintern Dorf Berg und Meer+ and ZT Sauvignon Blanc are further examples of impressive productions from this company. Again, both have a good bouquet of tropical fruits and a structured mouthfeel. The palate’s sensation also extends the pleasures of these wines. Great accompaniments to fish, seafood and white meats, etc. For all details of their full range, www.weinfink.at As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

Hello Readers... Welcome to the Late Spring edition of The Link. Last month, I received an unsigned letter from one of our readers saying how much he/she liked The Link (thank you for that!) and asking us to advertise for someone to set up a biking club or group for senior citizens in the Purley area. The suggestion was that senior citizens who enjoy riding pedal or battery bikes might like to meet up at the weekend to ride in groups. So if anyone would like to start such a group, or perhaps knows of one already in existence, please send me the details and I will have them added to the Clubs & Groups page.

A brief anatomy of the neck musculoskeletal structure The skeleton of the neck is made up of 7 cervical vertebrae 1c – 7c. I will also mention the TMJ or temporomandibular joint as it has great importance in maintaining the correct balance of the neck. Problems can occur along the vertebral column in different ways such as disk problems or degeneration. Trauma due to injury is a common problem often found in the neck and this can sometimes give rise to symptoms years after the initial trauma occurred. Some of the muscles of the neck include the trapezius, upper trapezius, semispinalis capitis, erector spinae, scalenes, and the sternocleidomastoid or SCM for short! The Bowen Technique I have found that Bowen is extremely effective for treating neck problems, whether these are new or old injuries resulting from trauma or other problems. There are several reasons why I feel this therapy has such a great impact upon neck problems, as follows:
Less is more Bowen involves very gentle touch which often elicits significant benefit in the body. Many studies have confirmed that this light touch has a significant impact and often making a treatment more effective. The Bowen moves are often made over muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, joints and occasionally nerves. Treatment aims to stimulate the nervous system and body to begin a process of healing, repair and rejuvenation. Treatment works on many levels The Bowen moves – are made at key structural points on the body which the brain uses as natural reference points to determine the body’s posture. As a result, the moves can have a huge effect on the way the body holds itself. The Bowen moves on the neck are made over the scalenes, semispinalis capitis, upper trapezius and erector spinae muscles and over the occipital protuberance. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) – this joint is very

important in maintaining the correct posture of the neck. Imbalance here can cause a multitude of issues from ear problems to headaches and migraines to sinus issues and allergies. The nervous system – sensory information is induced by the Bowen move which reaches the spinal cord passing through the nerve pathways to the different centres of the brain. At this point the information is shunted back and forth via a complex self-corrective feedback mechanism. The information is then sent back down the spinal cord to the individual muscles for correction to take place. The basic Bowen neck moves will often have a profound impact on the balance of the overall body and will elicit a powerful sense of well-being. Fascia and its importance Fascia is connective tissue that covers all of the structures of the body and allows flexibility and free flowing movement throughout the whole body. The body maintains structure through its relationship with key structural bands of muscle via fascia. One key function of fascia bands is to maintain upright structure. If there is tension or weakness in the fascia a range of reactions can result such as pressure on nerves, tension in the musculature on one side and compensation patterns being set up in the rest of the body. In Bowen, we directly affect fascia by changing the way in which the muscles and fascia relate to each other and a change in structure becomes inevitable whereby the structure of the body will adopt a better position and the body will be better able to function. To highlight how important and how effective treating fascia is I give an example that the fascial system contains ten times more receptors than muscles, these receptors send messages directly to the brain. A significant result achieved for one of my clients Neck problems, even those that are long standing, seem to respond really well to Bowen. I worked

with one client who was unable to move her head or neck, any movement caused significant pain. She was dropped off at my clinic by her friend who had had to drive very carefully as any jarring caused more pain. Within an hour after the first treatment the pain subsided considerably and the movement in the neck increased. After the second treatment the neck was virtually pain free and the range of movement pretty much back to normal. After the third and final treatment my client was back to being completely pain free with full range of movement returned. In practice I may also recommend supplements or remedies that will enhance the treatment we have conducted. I also often give exercises for clients to do themselves in between sessions that will enhance the effects of the treatment. Wellness Workshop I am holding a half day workshop on the 25 May 10am – 2pm in Corse, Gloucestershire. In the workshop, I will show you several techniques that can be used on a daily basis to enhance general health and wellbeing. Specifically, we will learn how to: • Calm the stress response, • Balance the meridians, • Balance blood chemistry, • Reduce fatigue, • Boost the immune system, • Feel strong and healthy and much more! Could “Tea and Chat” brighten your day?
W
hilst loneliness can affect anyone of any age, it is a sad truth that many older people can go weeks or even months without having a single conversation. Most people will feel lonely at some point in their lives, and thankfully, the experience will often pass. For others, however, these feelings are ongoing, which is why Age UK Surrey provides a number of activities through the Making Connections service to enable older people to remain independent and in touch with the local community, including Tea and Chat. “Tea and Chat” sessions in The Link
Caterham, Lingfield and Oxted provide a welcoming and inclusive space for people to get together and chat over a cup of tea or coffee. Simple social interactions can have an overwhelmingly positive impact on a person’s day, and at Tea and Chat you may even make some new friends along the way. At Tea and Chat you can enjoy refreshments and conversation, and there are also talks, quizzes, tutorials and games to participate in, if you wish. Tea and Chat takes place in the following locations: • Caterham – every other Monday, 10:30am – 12:00pm at the Douglas Brunton Centre • Lingfield – last Thursday of every month, 2:30pm – 4:00pm at Lingfield Day Centre
Ann regularly attends Tea and Chat and said: “I first came to Tea and Chat four years ago – it’s been so nice to meet new people.” The work of Age UK Surrey could not happen without the group of dedicated volunteers of all ages who are involved in every aspect of our work. Could you lend a hand to help make a difference to older people in your area? Visit www.ageuk.org.uk/surrey or call 01483 503414 for more information about Tea and Chat, volunteering and Age UK Surrey’s other services. Tea and Chat:

Caterham Rotary & Knights Garden Centres
C
aterham Rotary President Stephanie Barrett popped into Knights Garden Centre at Chelsham recently to thank the Knight family for allowing Rotary to use the garden centre as a base for their Christmas collection, which produced just under £4000 over the five weekends prior to Christmas. So why are Knights so passionate to help? Duncan Knight, Operations Director, says: “Knights Garden Centres have a long association with the Rotary Clubs of Caterham and Sanderstead and Selsdon together with Caterham and District Round Table. All our Santas who make our “Breakfast with Santa” fun for all the family are volunteers from Rotary as well as our Grotto Santas. During the year they carry out such wonderful work raising money to help support many needy causes in the local area whilst enjoying themselves at the same time.”

emperatures are expected to rise and showers are imminent. It is the ideal time for pests and weeds to multiply. You may also need to protect tender plants if frost is forecast.
April
• All planting areas should be warmed up with glass/fleece to speed up germination. • Pruning: prune Fig trees, divide Bamboo and Water Lilies • Indoors:- increase watering of plants & start feeding citrus plants
A a very busy month for gardeners, as there is Sowing, Potting up and Pruning.
May
Some of the more important jobs to be undertaken are: • Seeds to be sown under glass/greenhouse:• Annuals, Herbs in pots and Aubergine, Cucumber, Sweet Pepper and Tomatoes • Achimenes, Calceolaria, Schizanthus in pots in the greenhouse. • Outdoors:- The soil should be broken to a fine tilth and a liberal sprinkling of Growmore or Blood, Fish & Bone applied 1-2 weeks before sowing. Beetroot, early Carrot, Peas, Radish and Spring Onion (sow thinly). Hardy annuals can be sown in pots or in-situ. • Other outdoor jobs (miscellaneous):- Sprouted (chitted) Potato tubers can be planted. • Brassicas – to prevent Cabbage root fly, place a collar of carpet felt around the stems. • Containers & hanging baskets – add a slow release fertilizer. • Line Terracotta pots with perforated polythene, before filling up with compost. • Divide and move Spring bulbs when they finish flowering and plant Summer flowering bulbs. • Plant out Onions from seeds & sets and Shallots. • Half-hardy plants that have sprouted should be transferred outdoors when they have been hardened off. • Fruit blossoms should be protected from late frosts. • All climbing/rambling roses should be securely tied in.
A popular month for blossoms, celebrations, warm sunny days and gardens bursting with colour. Birds, Bees, Insects and other creatures are very active. A pest and disease watch is strongly recommended and do take care of your tender plants if a late frost is forecast. • Still time to sow : annual and biennial flowers and vegetables • Successional Sowing ( to prevent wastage): Beetroot, kohlrabi, lettuce, peas, salad onions, radish. • Greenhouse: aubergines, cucumbers and peppers (make sure there is sufficient ventilation). • Hardened off flowers/vegetable: all flower and vegetable plants that have been hardened off can be transferred outdoors only when frosts are not forecast. • Protection against pests and diseases (take adequate remedial action): slug pellets, cut plastic bottles, 1 metre barriers against carrot fly, blackspot/mildew on roses, caterpillars, codling moth traps on apple/pear trees, netting, straw & black plastic on the ground to deter birds and creatures. • Ways to save on watering during dry spells: mulching, lining pots with polythene, terracotta pots tend to absorb the moisture whereas plastic pots are preferable, shading plants, water gel in compost (crystals retain moisture), grass clippings retained on lawns, copious watering (better than a sprinkling), drought resistant

plants. Rain water collected in water butts and containers over the wet season will be useful now. • Ponds: reduce evaporation by covering it partially with Water Lilies and floating leaves. • Indoors: transfer plants to bigger sized pots with fresh compost, if overgrown, and give them a liquid feed. ********

urrey’s leading environmentalists over the last 60 years include: a museum curator from Haslemere, teacher from Dorking, a mother of three from Woking, a teacher training undergraduate, a banker from Dorking, a civil servant from Ewell, a chemist from Dorking, zoology and natural science graduate. Could the next one be you?
Celebrating Sixty Years of Surrey’s Environmentalists Surrey Wildlife Trust’s Contribution to Conservation
Sixty years ago John Clegg a museum curator and keen ecologist from Haslemere, and John Sankey, a teacher from Dorking, together with a band of likeminded naturalists and conservationists founded the Surrey Naturalists’ Trust on 21st March 1959 at an inaugural meeting in the Surrey County Council chamber. They had two goals “to protect wildlife and educate the public about nature.” These are still fundamental to Surrey Wildlife Trust’s activities today. Protecting Nature Reserves in Surrey In 1960 John Clegg was instrumental in securing the first ever reserve, Seale Chalk Pit on the Hog’s Back. Along with other local Trusts there was a movement to preserve nature reserves across the country. Seale Chalk Pit contained fascinating geology and today it is a rich chalk grassland habitat, a haven for butterflies and iconic plants. Education and Engagement With Nature From its very first years, the Trust was keen to educate people in Surrey about wildlife, organising trips with schools and running nature trails. In November 1971, the Trust saved a unique piece of ancient woodland Nower Wood, near Leatherhead,

Ranmore nature trail 1967 from development sparing more than 1,000 oak trees and securing a place for its new educational nature reserve. With a £15,000 debt to pay off, the Trust launched an appeal that drew more than 600 donations, some from as far as Canada and the US, raising £20,000 and saving 83 acres of woodland for generations to come. Then in 1977 a 19 year old teacher training undergraduate, Doug Hulyer, was asked to ‘develop the wood into an education resource’. An early pioneer in engaging people with nature and wildlife Doug said: ‘If you could change Surrey, you could change the world. Education is fundamental to the future of wildlife. Unless we develop an ecological literacy, we will continue to trash the planet.’ In 1979 a field centre, complete with classroom and research equipment was set up and in its first year of full-time operation, it welcomed more than 3,000 visitors, including pupils from some 80 schools. Its success has continued ever since, every year at Nower Wood 15,000 children and adults attend education programmes. The UK’s Leading Environmentalists In 1984, the Trust marked 25 years of protecting Surrey’s wildlife with a Silver Jubilee dinner. Looking ahead to the new millennium, David Attenborough wrote: “The pressure on our countryside has never been greater than it is today, so it becomes more important than ever to protect these few natural areas that remain and that mean so very much to so many. No organisation has done more to ensure their survival in this part of the The Link
country than the Surrey Trust and I, together with countless other inhabitants of the county, am most grateful to you.” Volunteers Who Saved Surrey’s Green Spaces In 1985 Mary Adler moved to Brentmoor Heath near Lightwater as she wanted somewhere to walk the dog and push the buggy as she had three young children. Not long after she heard that the MOD wanted to build housing on the heathland. In 1987, thanks in large part to the efforts of Mary Adler and other local people, Brentmoor Heath was saved from being sold by the MOD for housing. A huge success for the Trust, as Brentmoor was the Trust’s first reserve with full public access. Mary’s years of tireless work as volunteer warden have helped preserve and improve this vital heathland habitat, which is is rarer than rainforest, for indicator species such as the nightjar and Dartford warbler. By 2018 Surrey Wildlife Trust had improved or restored 2,700 hectares of heathland habitat in Surrey. A Wilder Future Paul Wickham, a retired banker, a member of the Trust with an interest in bird watching and botany, became a volunteer and then chief executive in 1977. His leadership coincided with the signing of a partnership agreement with Surrey County Council in 2002 to manage the council’s countryside estate looking after large reserves, such as Chobham . . . / continued on page 24
23
Pond research 1968 . . . / continued from page 23 Common, Norbury Park, Wisley and Ockham Common, Rodborough Common and Whitmoor Common. Surrey Wildlife Trust then managed 8,000 hectares of Surrey, which is five per cent, which received 1.3 million visits per year. In 2018 thanks to the skill and dedication of our staff and volunteers, 98 per cent of the SSSIs we manage are now in favourable or recovering condition. In 2013, the Trust had the unique opportunity to create a completely new reserve called Priest Hill. It worked with developers to clear 1000 tons of tarmac from abandoned playing fields and transform it into rich grassland habitat between Howell Hill and the Epsom Downs. Butterfly counts in recent years have revealed an explosion of small blue butterflies.
So landscape features such as healthy and wellmanaged hedgerows, rivers, nature reserves and green spaces across the county will help wildlife and people to flourish. Surrey Wildlife Trust is offering a range of 60th anniversary events, walks and talks including: the environmental youth summit for 16-18 year olds on March 28th, Wild Surrey art and photography competition open for entries until 14 April, Wild Surrey Photography and Art Exhibition in Guildford from 25 May to 14 June, Bay Pond Open Day in Godstone from 15 June, Guildford Goes Wild on Guildford High Street on 1 & 2 June, Heath Week from 28 July to 2 August and Rivers Week from 22 to 29 September. For more information on the history of the Trust, 60th anniversary events and how to get involved visit www.surreywildlifetrust.org.
2019 begins a new chapter with a new CEO, Sarah Jane Chimbwandira, and a new strategy to reconnect the landscape with nature recovery networks across the Thames Basin Heaths, The North Downs and Holmesdale Wetlands. The Surrey landscape has become fragmented over many years and lost its green corridors for wildlife.

A Convenient Herb Garden A
fter moving house, leaving behind a large garden, I now have a tiny garden, and I realise that I can’t grow quite such a variety of plants and herbs as I did before. I am now trying some pots of herbs on my kitchen windowsill. You can grow almost any herb in a container and most are very easy. Some herbs shouldn't be mixed as they have different water requirements, while others are more finicky and should be grown alone, so be sure to put plants that require similar care in the same pot. You can grow as many types of herbs in one container as you want, as long as you make sure that all the herbs in a single pot share the same sun, water, and soil preferences. For example, rosemary likes it hot and dry, while parsley needs steady moisture. They wouldn’t be perfect in the same pot. Ideally then, for best results, give each herb its own pot so that you can customize care and give it room to grow. Start by placing some broken pieces of pot over the drainage holes to Link prevent the compost from The
washing out. For free-draining compost, mix multipurpose or soil-based compost with a few generous handfuls of grit, adding and mixing together in stages as you fill the container. Light is the most important aspect of growing indoor herbs so a sunny windowsill is an added advantage. Aggressive spreaders, such as mint and lemon balm, will need separate containers to keep them under control. In the past I have always planted my mint in a bucket with holes for drainage and place it in a handy spot where I can pick readily and control it's spread, but now it's in a pot, until that is, it grows too large, and then I will just have to find room outside. There are many benefits to growing herbs in containers. For me, it’s all about access. I love having fresh herbs growing in pots on my kitchen windowsill. That way, when I’m in the middle of making
dinner and realize I’ve forgotten to harvest a handful of mint or rosemary, they are right there, nearby. Rosemary has aromatic, needle-like foliage that adds a welcome depth of flavour to roasted potatoes and chicken dishes. Pot-grown herbs can really transform your cooking; they’re very low maintenance and contribute bags of flavour to every meal. Above all, remember to pick and enjoy your herbs regularly. The plants actually benefit from regular picking and will produce lots more shoots in response - a win-win situation! Having herbs on hand is just brilliant – and they look fantastic too! article & photos by Pamela 33 Green

Add your splash of

to Caterham Valley It’s back! Caterham Valley’s Colour Caterham initiative will be making a splash once again this Easter.
I
n a bid to shake off the winter blues and herald the start of spring, the town will be transformed overnight into a kaleidoscope of handmade artwork created by the local community. Last year, the town woke up to find lampposts and side railings bedecked with guerrilla knitting and trees sprouting colourful pompoms. Shops and businesses proudly displayed artwork in their windows created by local school children. In the run up to this Easter holidays, Caterham Valley for You, the organisers of Colour Caterham, is calling on local groups and artists to `own’ a small area of the town – whether that is a set of railings or a lamppost - and transform it with colourful creations.
Visitors and shoppers in Caterham Valley last Easter were greeted with colourful artwork created by the local community. What will they wake up to this year?
“Colour Caterham helped to create a fun and positive start to spring when the weather was doing anything but,” said Andrew Browne, chairman of Caterham Valley For You.
Elf Takeover winners Alfie Fotheringham, eight, Harry Drewett, aged seven, and Eve Malcolm, aged 10, receive their prizes from Caterham Valley For You board member Lucie Allan.

“This year, we would like local groups - whether that is local artists, craft, youth or community groups - to form a Colour Caterham team to create a vibrant and fun atmosphere in Caterham Valley so that visitors feel uplifted when they come to shop here.” Local groups wishing to take part in Colour Caterham should submit their ideas via the contact form on the Caterham Valley for You

website as soon as possible www.caterhamvalley.co.uk The announcement of Colour Caterham comes hot on the heels of the successful Christmas Elves Takeover which brought hundreds of children into the town on the hunt for 20 handmade characters hidden in shops and business windows. Youngsters submitted completed elf trail sheets to special collection points based around the town, and four winners were chosen recently to receive WH Smith vouchers. They are Alfie Fotheringham, aged eight, Harry Drewett, aged seven and Eve Malcolm, aged 10, and four-yearold Emily Garrard.

Caterham Oxted & Godstone Lions Club District 105SE England Celebrating 100 years of Lions serving their communities
NEWS FROM LIONS MARCH 2019
O
n the surface it looks as if it has been a quiet month for COGS, but of course there is still a lot of work going on in the background as committees meet to discuss and organise fundraising events and social gatherings – it is not all work! Although the Club does support those in need and those who have fallen victim to disaster in different parts of the world, it tries to support as many local worthy causes as possible. One such very worthy cause is the new Brownies pack that has been set up in Godstone. A fundraising Quiz on the 23rd of March, which comes after this report goes to press, is just one of many fundraising events the Club puts on in the year. Coming up in April is the Abba Chique concert at Caterham School on Saturday 6th April and there are still some seats available. Tickets are £15 and the concert starts at 8pm. A licensed bar will be open from 7pm. There is ample free parking at the school. Tickets can be obtained from John on 01883 742680 and Tony on 01883 335945. The Easter egg raffle will be held on 16th April and tickets for that can be bought in some local pubs. 40
On 27th April the Club will host its annual tea party for listeners and presenters of the Talking Newspaper. This takes place in St Peter’s church hall in Limpsfield. In the longer term there will be the Swimathon on 11th May at De Stafford School. This is a popular fundraiser and the number of teams joining in has increased each year. Funds raised by the teams taking part are shared with COGS and with charities of their choice. Most importantly March is the month when the Club votes for and selects its officers for the coming Lions year. This will take place on Tuesday 12th March so when you read next month’s report you will know who has been chosen as the new President. Anyone wishing to join Lions or find out more about us is welcome to come along to a meeting. Just call Tony Carter on 01883 741809. You will find a warm welcome awaits you. COGS have a 12-seater mini bus which is available for use by the community. If you would like to use the minibus or find out more about it call David on 01342 893353.
