Hello Readers... Welcome to the August & September issue of The Link. Don’t forget to keep your copy for two months until the October & November issue pops through your door.

L TThe Link

School holidays are with us again, and for some of you this means a welcome respite from rounding up your reluctant school kids and the early morning school run, and for them it means lazy days and a morning lie-in. Sounds so good it almost makes me wish I was still that age! If you are looking for ways to entertain your children during the holidays, have a look at the What’s On page, where you’ll find several unusual activities to keep them occupied.

For those of you trying to identify the flowers on the front cover, these were photographed in The Chinese Gardens of Serenity on Malta, and unfortunately, despite having spent hours on the internet, I haven’t been able to find out what they are. All I know is that they grow on a shrub, and although they are very pretty, smell like onions! So if anyone recognises them and can tell me what they are, please do drop me a line.

Oh, What a Summer! A

cluster of fledgling blue tits hang from a suet feeder like bees clinging round their queen in a swarm. It has been like this since June, peak fledging time. In early summer every tree, bush and feeder was alive with fledglings fluttering their wings and twittering ‘feed me, feed me.’ Their parents dashed back and forth with beaks filled with food to stuff into their offsprings’ gapes. This is where feeders come in handy if you’re a harassed avian parent, so much easier to get the youngsters gathered near or on the feeding stations than to spend time and energy hunting for grubs. The goldfinches soon caught on to the idea, and were soon doing the same thing. Those young birds are still here tucking in with gusto, keeping me busy cleaning feeders on a weekly basis and filling nine daily. Wash day has taken on a whole new meaning. But it is important to keep the feeders clean for the health of the birds. Letting nature do its own thing and minimal management can have surprising and often delightful rewards. I left areas of long grass this year with only mown paths cut through them. A walk along these paths was to be delighted by clouds

of butterflies: ringlets, skippers, meadow browns, speckled wood and marble whites. Flashes of red revealed a cinnabar moth and further on a scarlet tiger moth. The southern marsh orchid grew for the first time in the paddocks and the common spotted orchid popped up in areas it hasn’t been before. The removal of the ‘wild wood’, a tangle of hybrid willows planted some twenty years go, rewarded me with a fabulous display of foxgloves which the bees loved. And a statuesque forest of welt thistle will keep the goldfinches happy on the seed heads in the autumn.

botanists and two conservation officers and several plantsmen, have revealed no identification of ‘pinky.’ All that anyone could be certain of was it was parasitic because it had no chlorophyll. Sadly pinky was badly scorched by the northerly winds we had in June and died before flowering, so what it was or where it came from remains a mystery. There might be a remote chance that pinky will return in the future, I hope so. I will certainly be looking out for another pinky. article and photograph by Geraldine Holbourn

Then a mystery appeared. Growing amongst a group of hellebores, incidentally another first for me, was a pink, orchid-like plant. And I don’t just mean the flower, the stem was pink, the leaves were pink. It was like nothing I’d seen before and was nicknamed ‘pinky’, the plant from mars.’ Hours of research, consultations with

A Trio of Blondies .... !! Speeding Ticket A police officer stops a blonde for speeding and asks her very nicely if he could see her license. She replied in a huff, "I wish you guys would get your act together. Just yesterday you took away my license and then today you expect me to show it to you!" The Vacuum A blonde was playing Trivial Pursuit one night. It was her turn. She rolled the dice and she landed on "Science & Nature." Her question was: If you are in a vacuum and someone calls your name, can you hear it? She thought for a time and then asked, "Is it on or off?" Knitting A highway patrolman pulled alongside a speeding car on the freeway. Glancing at the car, he was astounded to see that the blonde behind the wheel was knitting! Realizing that she was oblivious to his flashing lights and siren, the trooper cranked down his window, turned on his bullhorn and yelled, "PULL OVER!" "NO," the blonde yelled back. "SCARF!”

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight

T

his year is the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force formed from the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service on the 1st April 1918.

We must also not forget that this will be the 78th Anniversary of ‘the hardest day’ during the Battle of Britain in which RAF Kenley played a major part. It will also be the 75th anniversary of the Dambusters raid, that low-level night attack, a

dangerous and ingenious scheme. In connection with this special year the BBMF will be making a flypast over our historic and famous airfield on the 19th of August around 1pm, weather permitting. The sight and sound of a Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire will no doubt bring a lump in many people’s throat. If you intend to go, give yourselves plenty of time and please keep to the RAF Kenley Tribute side of the Kenley Common -this is for safety reasons. Don’t forget to wave!

ave you ever heard snuffling and grunting late at night in your garden? Well, it could be a rather prickly character, with yellow-tipped spines on its back and a furcovered face. If it’s between 15 and 30cm long, from tail to nose, it’s most likely to be one of the UK’s most iconic mammals, the small, round, brown hedgehog, which is protected in the UK under the Wildlife and

20

Countryside Act, 1981, and has been given Priority Species status since 2010. Although hedgehogs are nocturnal, in the past it was common to spot hedgehogs in the countryside, in parks and gardens. In the summer they sleep for a large part of the day under bushes, in leaves or in hedgerows, which is where their name comes from. But sadly

hedgehogs and hedgerows are both in decline in the UK. In fact hedgehogs are disappearing faster than tigers; they've suffered a startling 95% decline since the 1950s, when the UK population was roughly 30 million. Now there are fewer than one million hedgehogs thought to be left in the UK. The dramatic decline in hedgehogs can be blamed on the loss of suitable habitat and supply of food. There has been a loss of hedgerows, as traditional hedgerow management skills are in steep decline. Parks and gardens are over-managed and there has been a loss of green space to paving and decking. While the use of chemical pesticides across the countryside, in parks and gardens, inevitably leads to fewer insects for hedgehogs to eat. The good news is that you can join the growing trend to become a wildlife gardener and encourage

hedgehog populations to thrive. In the summer hedgehogs are very active and love to travel up to 2km a night to feed and to look for a mate. So neighbours are getting together to create hedgehog highways through their gardens to help them to feed and wander at night. By cutting a small 13cm by 13cm hole in the bottom of garden fences, which is too small for most pets, but just right for hedgehogs it provides a corridor for hedgehogs to move between gardens.

hedgehog has visited your garden if you spot hedgehog poo on the lawn; medium-sized, black droppings which look like a dark slug consisting of bits of beetles and other insects. By providing safe and wildlife rich places for them to live you’re much more likely to see the return of these prickly creatures in your garden. From about November to April hedgehogs hibernate in a nest of

leaves or logs called a 'hibernaculum' and there are instructions on the Surrey Wildlife Trust’s website for making a hedgehog home, which is a great way to help keep them safe and well through the winter too. If you’d like to do more, help us determine the status of hedgehogs in Surrey and report sightings on our website at www. surreywildlifetrust.org.

Hedgehogs eat all kinds of invertebrates, as well as amphibians, birds' eggs and anything else they can catch; but they particularly like big, crunchy beetles, earthworms and slugs, making them a gardener's best friend. So if you offer insect-rich lawns and flowerbeds, which make excellent feeding grounds at dusk, they will clear up the slugs to protect your flowers in return. You will know if a The Link

LIONS NEWS FOR AUGUST

J

to join in some of the games. Some pupils of the Academy helped with the games and even competed with a team of their own.

As readers of Lions news will know, Ian Macaulay was President last year. He has now handed over to Rita Reissland who has been a member of COGS for many years.

The club’s first fundraising event will be the horseshow at Fickleshole on 5th where the club will have its food and refreshment marquee. And of course the Lions will serving food and drink on the Green for the Godstone Fete on 26th.

uly is the month when the Lions year comes to an end and another member takes on the role as club President. It is also the time when members carry on with work in a committee or hand over to others.

The formal handover took place on 1st June in the White Hart Barn, following a delicious lunch that was prepared by members and their partners. Outgoing President Ian gave a summary of all that the club had achieved during the past twelve months, making a particular reference to how successful the swimathon had been, both for the club and those swimmers who were raising funds for others. In fact the first meeting since the handover will see Rita give winning participants in the swimathon their certificates. It will not be Rita’s first job as President as she represented the club at the annual It’s a Knock Out competition which is run by Horley Lions with the help of COGS, East Grinstead and Bromley Lions. The competition is held every year at the Oasis Academy in Coulsdon and is the greatest fun day for youngsters and adults with special needs. The Mayor of Reigate and Banstead, the Mayor of East Grinstead and Vice Chairman of Tandridge District Council all attended the event and were even persuaded

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Grafting P

eople often ask me if a plant is damaged, or diseased, or what is this lump, etc., on a plant . . . and that is where it has been grafted on.

together with the chosen host plant and carries on growing. In human terms we have skin grafts, where we take a section of skin from one area of the body and transfer it onto another section of the body to encourage it to grow over a damaged area. This is basically the same scenario but with plants.

From the commercial side of things, a specimen that is very slow growing can have a big mother plant, which is an advantage because there is a lot of it and you can prune it hard, for example a Contorted Hazel. You can take a wild Hazel plant root and stock, and graft a large section of very slow growing Contorted Hazel onto it, creating a lot of plants reasonably quickly for re-sale. The most common plants that are grafted nowadays are roses. You hear people saying “it has reverted back, it has sent up suckers”, and this is because they have used a wild root stock or a rose that has a very good root system (which is preferable when it comes to roses) and the variety required is grafted onto that strong stem. So, the disadvantage is that it can send up suckers and revert back because the wild root stock is stronger than the main plant.

So what is Grafting? Grafting is used to improve a plant that is very slow growing, or doesn’t produce very good seed, or very good cuttings. You take the mother plant that has Various ways of doing this grown - this is a ‘true’ plant of its However the advantages are, that variety - and take a section of that This can be achieved from a bud cutting to a root. It is complex because these plants are slow plant and glue it, through cuts growing and it is hard to produce and very hard to explain all the and by taping it, onto a different new plants from seeds, etc. different methods, but what are plant of the same family, or host (because of the time it takes), plant. thecall advantages disadvantages To advertise 01684 and 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk 28 The ‘graft’ fuses itself

this option brings the price down because the plants can be mass produced. Another variety of plant for grafting is an acer. If you get a wild green acer that grows very quickly you can graft onto it. The most common form of grafting is to cut out an inverted ‘V’ from your chosen plant, and on the root stock cut out another ‘V’, that slots together with the ‘V’ of your chosen plant, and then bind them together. This is why sometimes - certainly on roses - little bits of wax can be found, because wax is used to seal the joint and stop disease getting in. Nowadays it is more common to buy grafting secateurs which will precisely cut all the sections, fix them into place and automatically wrap them for you.

What are the other advantages? You could have a fruit tree, for example a pear, and graft a different variety of pear onto each branch of the host plant. This was very common with Victorian gardeners when they were starting to experiment with these processes. You could have a rose with blooms of a different colour on each branch. Grafting really took off from this era onwards. When you are looking for a plant at a Garden Centre Don’t be put off if there is a lump on the stem, or because you can see a ‘V’ section on the plant. This only means that it has been grafted onto a hardier host plant. It will be perfectly strong, and there is no disease just because it might be a slightly different colour. What you must avoid doing is putting the graft under the ground when planting, if it is a tree etc. as that is obviously a point where disease could get in or even rot out the graft. If your rose is producing suckers from the root stock your best bet is to dig down to the root and try to tear this off the root stock, otherwise there is a chance it will grow much quicker and take over the plant.

FLEAS! article by Jan Polden RVN

This month Veterinary Nurse Jen Polden, looks at the ever-present problem of fleas.

T

he humble flea is the most common skin parasite of domestic pets. They feed on blood from the capillaries (tiny blood vessels underneath the skin) and a single flea can ingest up to 15 times its own bodyweight in a single day. Fleas are indiscriminate parasites, and most fleas will happily infest on dogs, cats and humans. Fleas can be a common problem for pet owners all year round, and can be difficult to get rid of if you have an infestation, so prevention is key. It is important to treat cats and dogs for fleas as they can cause a number of problems including: severe itching and discomfort, allergic skin disease, and anaemia (especially in kittens and puppies) if left untreated. They can also carry tapeworms, so it’s important to treat for both fleas and intestinal worms. Some common signs of a flea problem are: excessive itching, black specks on your pet’s coat, known as flea dirt, and of course visibly seeing the adult fleas on your pet.

The life cycle of the flea has four stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult flea. • The adult female flea will land on your animal, and after having her first blood meal will begin to lay The Link

eggs, as many as 40-50 per day. • These eggs will stay on your animal until they have been transferred to the environment where, under optimal conditions, they will develop into larva. • The larva will move away from light and will hide in carpets and skirting boards where they go through a series of moults to become pupa. • Pupa are resistant to household sprays and can stay dormant for up to 6 months, and need to be stimulated to become adult fleas by warmth, vibration (e.g. hoovering) and carbon dioxide. How to get rid of fleas If you have a recurring problem with fleas it would be good to follow these simple steps to ensure you are covering all areas.

vet as to what they recommend. • Then make sure you treat the pet’s environment with a household spray which will target the eggs, larvae and adults. Hoovering and spraying all dark cracks or crevices will ensure that you are targeting the fleas at all life stages. • Wash all bedding at 60°C and wash or clean anything that has come into contact with your animal (furnishings, car mats, toys, etc.). Following these simple steps will ensure the fleas are kept at bay, leading to a happy and healthy pet. It is then vital that your pets are treated for fleas on an ongoing basis to prevent the problem recurring.

any of the Summer flowering bulbs are still thriving in August and the garden is particularly enhanced by the majestic Gladioli . Jobs done now provide the basis for future success in the garden. There are a number of important jobs to be undertaken this month viz:

• Arum lilies can be started into growth. Ventilate Tomatoes well in hot weather.

Bulbs Plant narcissi of all kinds, from the miniature to the big daffodils. Start preparing bowls of bulbs for indoor winter flowering.

Herbaceous Plants The taller varieties of plants, especially, Dahlias need to be supported with stakes. Sow Calendula, Candytuft, Cornflowers, Godetia, Larkspur, Echium, Alyssum and Agrostomma for early blooms next summer.

Flowers for cutting Gladioli can be cut now and kept for several days. Fruit Early Apples and Pears are ready for picking and eating. Plant summer fruiting Strawberries. Greenhouse • Cyclamen may be sown now and cuttings of Heliotrope and Fuchsia may be taken.

36

Hedges Take care when you prune your Lavender hedge. New growth should be lightly trimmed now. Old wood cut back will not shoot again.

House Plants Plants left alone during holidays, like to be grouped together, to provide humidity for each other. They can be left inside a plastic hood forming a miniature greenhouse.

Lawns Frequent mowing is the normal practice. If going away on holiday, leave the box off the final cut. The cuttings will help soil moisture to be retained. Paths, Fences & Walls It is a suitable time to lay paths. Remember to kill off any weeds before commencing work. (Use any treatment first thing on a sunny day) Paths should be given a camber to drain off heavy rain. Patios, Balconies & Roof Gardens Ensure that outdoor living spaces are not too cluttered. Plants should be removed to the edges to make room for people to move about freely. Rock Gardens Take cuttings of dwarf Rhododendrons. Plant spring

Wine:

Choice Desserts

D

essert wines have been very popular through the ages and are generally a sweet wine that is enjoyed with, or after a meal. Sometimes served with the dessert of a meal, and afterwards, also, these productions continue to be chosen regularly and form part of the highlight of a dining occasion. Various well-known dessert wines, that are 'late harvested', incorporate 'noble rot' (Botrytis cinerea). Differing variations of dessert wines can be light in texture and others more powerful. The dessert wines can also be sparkling and fortified. Castelnau de Suduiraut (France) is a serious production. Fresh and with good balance, this is a very popular dessert wine. Intense fruits, for the mouthfeel, make this exceptional production very popular for many dining occasions.

Late Harvest Vistamar Moscatel (Chile) is a splendid wine from the LimarĂ Valley, which has perfect conditions for Moscatel grapes. This straw-yellow production has an excellent bouquet, plus a wonderful mouthfeel and palate of juicy fruits. A long finish adds to the pleasures of this very balanced wine.

Torres Floralis (Spain) is another popular dessert wine. The Torres family has, since 1946, been making Floralis-Moscatel Oro. This is reputedly one of the most charismatic dessert wines of the Mediterranean. The floral bouquet leads perfectly to the mouthfeel and sensual palate sensations.

Royal Tokaji (Hungary) is also extremely popular. Tokaji dessert wines have been a favourite since the 17th century; the indigenous grape varieties, combined with the hot summers and volcanic soils, plus expertise, come together to produce exceptional wines.

I located these productions and many more, at the award-winning Majestic Wine Company, which is dedicated and committed to customer satisfaction. Great advice, if required, from the very knowledgeable staff, about their wines, spirits, beers, ciders and non-alcoholic beverages, etc., is always available, plus free glass hire and delivery, with free tastings and discounts. There are opportunities to meet wine producers at the free tasting events. Online ordering is available, too. www.majestic.co.uk As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

Around the world From Indian curries to vegan sarnies, you can travel the world via Caterham Valley's food and drink offering. Caterham Valley For You manager Sue McGeown offers a quick taste of what's on the menu.

Bua Thai

W

hether you're looking forward to a sizzling king prawn curry or a vegan mozzarella and roasted tomato toastie, Caterham Valley's food and drink offering can whisk you off on exotic adventures or add an international flavour to your lunch break. Starting down the far end of Croydon Road, the eye-catching Bua Thai brings a taste of Thailand 7,257 miles around the globe to Caterham Valley – and you can't miss it with its elaborate red and gold entrance! A few steps down the street, you can enjoy café culture at both Sweet & Savoury Waffles and Caffe Bambino. While the former is best known for its delicious Italian gelato and, you've guessed it, its fresh, batter-based creations, the latter is a top spot for a laid back light lunch, a fruity smoothie or possibly an ice cold beer, depending on the time of the day.

42

Next, we head straight into Mediterranean sundrenched menus with Pizza Express and Casa Lola promoting friendly Euro relations right next door to each other. You don't need us to tell you what the ever-popular Pizza Express specialises in, but many refer to Casa Lola as a bit of a hidden gem – it's an independent tapas restaurant that's perfect for getting the party started with its sangria selection. Across the road from here, you'll spot the familyowned Coughlans Bakery, which is offering a fine line of vegan treats these days that are perfect to pick up on the go, as well as its usual much-loved baked offerings. If you're in a coffee and cake mood, also check out the upstairs area of Costa Coffee, which offers blue sky views into the hills; Caffè Nero and their cappuccinos; and Colairo's, right next to the station – even if you’re not going off on your travels, it’s a great spot to catch up with friends over one of their delicious espressos.

Sweet and Savoury Waffles

Spice of life Skip up to Godstone Road and you're a mere 5,500 miles away from Caterham, with a melting pot of Indian regions represented by The Kerala, Rajduth Tandoori and Bollywood. Inspired by the richness of Arabian seas and an abundance of exotic spices, The Kerala produces village cuisine that will whisk you off on exotic travels and adventures while you're still sitting at your table.

The William Garland

Alternatively, make sure to sample the house specialities (whole or half a spring chicken marinated in herbs and spices and grilled on charcoal, anyone?) at Rajduth Tandoori. Across the road from those two, you'll find Bollywood across two floors. While it's open seven days a week, Wednesday is banqueting night. For £11.95 you can enjoy a five-course set meal at this modern restaurant and bar. Looking for a pint of beer or a glass of wine? Well there are two pubs in Caterham Valley, The William Garland and Crown & Pepper. The William Garland boasts a large urban beer garden and has just been taken over by a new landlord and landlady, while the Crown & Pepper is best known for its Indo-Chinese food, cocktail list and the atmosphere that makes it so popular with groups. Whatever dishes you're dreaming about, there's a good chance you'll find something that will tickle your fancy in Caterham Valley – whether you're looking for a quick bite on a busy day or planning a laid back celebration with friends and family. Until next time, Sue

n this article I share with you some information on the psoas muscle as it plays such an important role in supporting the balance and overall health of the body. Location of the psoas The psoas (pronounced so-az) is a deep core muscle approximately 16 inches long. It directly links the ribcage and trunk with the legs. The muscle is located on either side of the body and most people have a psoas major and a psoas minor. The psoas minor is thought to be a disappearing muscle however as we have evolved from a semi-flexed to an upright being. It is possible to have a psoas minor on one side, one on both sides or none at all! The psoas does not attach directly to the pelvis but indirectly through its attachment to the iliacus muscle which lines the pelvic basin. The psoas and iliacus muscles are often spoken of together as the iliopsoas. Function of the psoas The muscle is basically a hip

flexor and it supports the free swing of the leg in walking and plays an important role in transferring weight through the trunk into the legs and feet. More importantly, it acts as a guide wire stabilising the entire spine. The psoas also acts like a shelf providing support for the organs and viscera. The health, length and vitality of the psoas effects organ function, for example: whether there is room within the pelvic bowl for the organs to rest comfortably and function normally depends on the length and tone of the psoas muscle. Lastly the psoas functions as a hydraulic pump; its movement stimulates and pushes fluids in and out of cells. In normal walking, the psoas muscle is activated in each step as it contracts and stretches. Its normal movement stimulates the viscera and massages the spinal column. The ability of the psoas to move freely encourages a continuous, unobstructed flow of blood through the major arteries into the legs and feet.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

Situations that can affect Psoas balance Pregnancy and childbirth – if the psoas is not fully engaged it will affect how a woman carries her baby. Structural imbalance during pregnancy and caused at the time of childbirth could cause the psoas to weaken.

• Back problems

Female cycles – women experiencing cramping and other pelvic problems could have an imbalanced psoas. Many women have experienced significant relief by using techniques to release the psoas muscle so it can do its job easily and freely supporting rather than hindering the reproductive organs, nerves and ligaments.

• Respiratory issues

Trauma – accidents of any kind can cause the psoas to contract and shorten; some people can feel the psoas contract for example, in a car when you brake suddenly. More often than not the psoas will recover from things like the car braking suddenly but in more serious accidents some therapeutic intervention is necessary. Whiplash injuries often respond very well to psoas work. Fear – when the fear reflex is activated the psoas will contract this has significant implications for the balance of the muscle and the impact stress can have upon it. Dehydration – this will cause the psoas muscle to shorten so staying hydrated is essential. Exercise – certain types of exercise and activities tend to shorten and contract the psoas muscle these include; horse riding, cycling, abdominal crunches to name a few. Results of psoas imbalance Some of the problems that could arise with a shortened psoas include: • Structural problems • Digestive problems • Issues with the pelvis • Hip problems • Mobility issues

The Link

• Circulatory issues • Balance problems • Knee and ankle problems • PMS • Digestive problems • Sciatica How you can help your psoas Constructive rest position An exercise that encourages the psoas muscle to lengthen, it involves lying on the floor with your knees bent at a 45-degree angle. This is something I show clients in practice. For more information on how to do this please be in touch. Keep hydrated When we are dehydrated the psoas muscle will become shorter so keeping hydrated is essential. The body will use the hydration it has to send to the major organs and carry out its essential tasks. The muscular system tends to be lower down on the hydration priority list. If you experience regular muscle pain try drinking more water and see if this alleviates the pain. Have a treatment The Bowen Technique can address the psoas either directly by using the specific psoas procedure or indirectly by using the pelvic and kidney procedures. Sometimes working with the muscle indirectly is more suitable for an individual than directly applying the psoas procedure. This will vary for each individual in terms of what is being experienced and for how long the symptoms or imbalance have been present. I will also show you some exercise that can have a positive impact upon the muscle and symptoms arising as a result of imbalance.

The Bell Ringers After Quasimodo's death, the bishop of the Cathedral of Notre Dame decided that he would personally interview the new bell ringers in the belfry. After observing several applicants, he had decided to call it a day. Just then, an armless man approached him and announced that he was there to apply for the bell ringer's job. The bishop was incredulous. "But you have no arms!" he said. "No matter," said the man. "Observe!" And he began striking the bells with his face, producing a beautiful melody on the carillon. The bishop listened in astonishment; convinced he had finally found a replacement for Quasimodo. But suddenly, the armless man tripped and plunged headlong out of the belfry window to his death in the street below. The stunned bishop rushed to his side. When he reached the street, a crowd had gathered around the fallen figure. As they silently parted to let the bishop through, one of them asked, "Bishop, who was this man?". "I don't know his name," the bishop sadly replied, "but his face rings a bell." WAIT! WAIT! There's more . . . . . . . . . . The following day, despite the sadness that weighed heavily on his heart due to the unfortunate death of the armless campanologist, the bishop continued his interviews for the bell ringer of Notre Dame. The first man to approach him said, "Your Excellency, I am the brother of the poor armless wretch who fell to his death from this very belfry yesterday. I pray that you honour his life by allowing me to replace him in this duty" The bishop agreed to give the man an audition, and, as the armless man's brother stooped to pick up a mallet to strike the first bell, he groaned, clutched at his chest, twirled around, and died on the spot. Two monks, hearing the bishop's cries of grief at this second tragedy, rushed up the stairs to his side. "What has happened? Who is this man?" the first monk asked breathlessly "I don't know his name," sighed the distraught bishop, "but . . . he's a dead ringer for his brother".
