The Villager April 2013

Hello & Welcome to the April edition of The Villager As always, we have a magazine packed with great articles, editorials and of course a brilliant range of adverts from a great selection of local traders. Last month we increased our print run to 8,000 and doubled our distribution to Malvern and Evesham. This has had the desired effect of attracting several new advertisers from both areas, and hopefully has increased enquiries to our existing advertisers. The changes to the website are almost complete, and for those of you who have had a look at it recently, you will see that we have included a page listing all advertisers. This page will be updated monthly and in due course, we will be offering the option for you to have a link to your own website.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

I

t's been a struggle! What clever souls would have opened a community shop run by volunteers in a village of barely 600 people in the depths of a recession? Close to towns in South Worcestershire with a wealth of choice for grocery shopping and the Vale of Evesham, handy for seasonal fruit and vegetables on it's doorstep. All far enough away though to make shopping for day-to-day necessities an inconvenience for residents of Peopleton, a small but perfectly formed village just off the A44; famous for Bowbrook House, the childhood home of Dame Barbara Cartland and Stonebow House where the TV presenter and journalist Jeremy Paxman spent his early years.

Peopleton has everything you'd want and expect in a village: medieval church, good pub, village hall and playing field ... and a shop. In 2010 the shop almost became another statistic in the list of closures and failed village stores that weren't able to compete with the large out-of-town supermarkets. But a group of people in Peopleton were determined not to let the village shop go quietly. In mid 2010 a committee was formed, and a group of volunteers determined ways of raising funds to get the new shop off the ground. These included a grant from the Plunkett Foundation and selling shares to villagers, which raised almost £7,000, as well as some generous donations. Peopleton was also lucky to keep it's Post Office at a time when many were closing; the committee convinced Post Office Ltd that the venture was financially 'watertight' and that there were enough people to support it. On the 7th December 2010, 'The Pantry' finally opened, offering groceries that had not previously been available in the village: fresh fruit and vegetables, quality meat and cheeses, fresh Continental bread and patisseries stocked every day. The opening got off to an unexpected start with one of the coldest winters in living memory and plenty of snow effectively cutting off the village and encouraging more people than were expected to sample what The Pantry had to offer. This did have it's downside, as villagers with 4 x 4's had to collect goods from stranded delivery vehicles! There are so many stories to tell that have happened in a relatively short space of time, from a group of people who arrived for a funeral in Peopleton and came into the shop to use the phone, only to discover they should've been 15 miles away in Alcester, to The Pantry's fifteen minutes of fame when the BBC Countryfile film crew turned up to film the shop and volunteers at work because our community shop coincided with the 60th Anniversary of the Archers radio programme where a similar storyline was taking shape.

years and 4 months it has been open .... other than when a workman came through the ceiling whilst working on the apartment upstairs! A comment from one of our loyal volunteers: "In keeping with the Government plan to promote a better understanding of maths, several senior citizens have improved their mathematical skills at the shop. Some have developed their confidence by serving the public and it has given others an opportunity to contribute to village life. It is fast becoming a beneficial social centre, especially for people who don't drive. Long may it grow!" Steve Dexter Manager & Sub-Postmaster, the Pantry, Peopleton

The Pantry, along with it's compact Tea Room with walled garden has become a great meeting point for villagers, and has in a way, brought Peopleton closer together. The Bridge A man was riding his Harley along a California beach when suddenly the sky clouded above his head and, in a booming voice, God said, "Because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish." The biker pulled over, thought for a minute, and then said, "Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over anytime I want." God replied, "Your request is materialistic. Think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking; the supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific and the concrete and steel it would take! I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of something that could possibly help mankind." The biker thought about it for a long time. Finally, he said, "God, I wish that I, and all men, could understand women. I want to know how she feels inside, what she's thinking when she gives me the silent treatment, why she cries, what she means when she says nothing's wrong, why she snaps and complains when I try to help, and how I can make a woman truly happy." God replied: "You want two lanes or four on that bridge . . . . ?"

Just popping out to water the Chichipatls, Dahling! Chichipatl . . . . . Acocotle . . . . . Cocoxochitl water cane, water pipe, water pipe flower, hollow stem flower, cane flower (language of the Toltecs & Aztecs)

I

’ve stolen some land . . . . . from my husband, or to be precise, I’ve invaded his vegetable plot. He doesn’t know yet; he thinks he’s going to plant leeks, but I’ve declared it ‘The Cut Flower Garden’, so it’s official!

Boom Boo

Why has this happened, you ask? Well, a couple of weeks ago, I designed a large planting scheme under the influence of Hidcote’s Red Border. Our client, being a fan also of Great Dixter, made the splendid request for a few Dahlias, taking the border from Summer to late Autumn. Being a Dahlia enthusiast myself, we went straight to Rose Cottage Plants website and selected ‘Bishop of Llandaff’ (absolute favourite with a dark leaf), ‘Nescio’ and ‘Grenadier’. We also fell in love with Dahlia ‘Dark Fubuki’ and ‘Taratahi Ruby’. The damage was done. My obsession with this tender Mexican perennial rekindled, I made a list for my own garden. Sitting back after twenty minutes, to admire my selection, I realised that I had chosen exclusively 5 chocolate coloured varieties. It’s always easier choosing for someone else’s garden, I thought darkly. Clearly I needed to exercise more objectivity in my colour choice, but more to the point, where was I going to plant them? Dahlias are easy to grow. Purchase fat tubers, plunge into potting compost in April, position in your greenhouse/porch and just add water. Plant outside in June with a thick mulch and sturdy supporting stake. Flowers appear from mid-end July and continue through to frosty November. What more could you ask of a plant? Dahlias enjoy full sun and need humus rich soil. They make admirable border plants and are ideal to pop into bare spots after the Spring frenzy and June flush of perennials are over. For me, the rabbit-proofed vegetable plot is ideal; in fact, an obvious choice! Admittedly there may be the odd earwig to repel and invading slugs will be eaten by the pheasants (they eat everything else in the vegetable plot!). Regular cutting means plenty of fresh flowers and the dead heading sorted. Come November you have the choice of lifting and storing them in dry wood shavings indoors till next April, or you could leave them in the border covered with a huge pile of mulch, cross all fingers and hope they survive. I confess my solution will be to buy fresh ones each year, as I know I will forget to lift them in time.

Arabian Night

Furthermore, they attract bees and pollinating insects. In fact, the Dahlia occupation will bring positive benefits to the potager, providing masses of cut blooms and a good view from the kitchen window, to boot.

So, territory established, back to the knotty problem of colour. Dahlias have a fascinating history (for future discussion), suffice to say Grand Prix that since the Victorians got to grips with this genetically variable plant, tens of thousands of varieties have been produced, providing centuries of re-classification work for happy botanists. There are some sixteen different flower forms and Bishop of Llandaff Canary 20 To advertise call 0845 224 7061 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

every colour available (except blue and black); enough to satisfy the most extravagant taste or sensitive palate. Nifty breeding, careful selection and good marketing has brought Dahliaphiles a phenomenal choice; the range available is almost overwhelming. Do I choose the spiky cactus in raspberry ripple or zingy lemon-meringue, paeony-flowered pink marshmallows or pom-poms in chocolateburgundy, or one of everything? By the time I’ve filled the on-line shopping basket, I have spent a fortune and created a display to rival Carmen Miranda’s hat; which is possibly not a good thing!

By choosing flowers of a single colour, but of different shape and form, you can add an interesting dimension to your borders. However, after the dismal, damp squib of last summer, I have developed a colour craving.

Dark Fubuki

Marshalling my thoughts over a hot chocolate, I determined the new cut-flower colony should proclaim it’s arrival with a riot of carnival oranges, reds and yellows; the larger and more outrageous the better. My collection:

But for the coup de grâce of my new dominion, in tribute to the Dahlia’s Aztec heritage I will be devoting a small corner to this collection:

hen Paul moved with his family to Worcester from Yorkshire three years ago, he could never have imagined how busy his fledgling business was to become. “We moved south to be closer to my wife’s family to help care for her Mum who has multiple sclerosis. I was very nervous about moving from the client base I had built up in Yorkshire to effectively start all over again in a new place.” Three years on, Paul can look back with satisfaction on the installations he has completed, including windows, doors, conservatories, porches, facia and soffits and even the odd water butt!

He will come to you to see what you would like to be done, he will talk about designs and products with you and then he will go away, send you a written quote and will give you all the time you need to come to a thoroughly thought-out decision.

. . . . for everything else, there's . . . .

Dan wakes up with a huge hangover after attending his company's Christmas Party. He's not normally a drinker, but it was the Christmas party . . . ! He doesn't even remember how he got home from the party, and feeling as bad as he does, he wonders if he did something wrong. Dan has to force himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table. And, next to them, is a single red rose!! He sits up and sees his clothes laid out on the chair, all clean and pressed. He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotlessly clean; so is the rest of the house. He takes the aspirins, and cringes when he sees a huge black eye staring back at him in the bathroom mirror. Then he notices a note hanging on the corner of the mirror written in red with little hearts on it and a kiss mark from his wife in lipstick: "Honey, breakfast is on the stove. I left early to get groceries to make you your favorite dinner tonight. I love you, darling! Love, Jillian" He stumbles to the kitchen and sure enough, there is a hot breakfast, steaming hot coffee, and the morning newspaper. His 16 year-old son is also at the table, eating. Dan asks, "Son . . . what happened last night?" "Well . . . you came home sometime after 3am, drunk and out of your mind. You fell over the coffee table and broke it, then you puked in the hallway, and got that black eye when you ran into the door." Confused, he asks his son, "So, why is everything in such perfect order and so clean? I have a rose, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me . . .??" His son replies, "Oh THAT! Well . . . Mum dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you screamed . . . "Leave me alone, I'm MARRIED!!"

Political Correctness?

erm denoting language, ideas, policies and behaviour seeking to minimise social and institutional offence in occupational, gender, racial, cultural, sexual orientation, religions, beliefs or ideologies, disability and age-related contexts (Wikiquote) or alternatively perhaps: the art of infuriating the majority through insulting a minority with over-sensitivity?

Don’t get me wrong, dear reader I abhor the ‘N’ word for Black Americans or the ‘R’ word for someone mentally challenged, along with most of you (I hope?) as these are terms of severe denigration, belittling and designed to insult, scorn or vilify. But seriously folks, am I to cease using the technical computer terminology of Master and Slave when referring to servers in the network? Must I really use terms like visually challenged, fire officer, factually unencumbered (ignorant!), gingerbread person or holiday tree? I don’t think so!

asking kids to pass a test and get a license to use their toy cars; call for Health & Safety rules to be applied when they build spaceships out of cardboard, or sue ‘em for malpractice when they fail to save the patient in "Operation"? Let’s not damage their delicate psyches by having the poor mites compete in races during school sports day; let’s stop half way, all hold hands and cross the line together! Seriously?

Healthy advice on how to enjoy yourself over Easter without sacrificing your waistline.

H

ere are a few tips on how to keep your health on track over the sweetest weekend of the year.

1. Don't bulk buy Only buy a small amount of good quality chocolate, rather than lots of poor quality chocolate. The darker the chocolate the more antioxidants, so chocolate with 60 per cent cocoa is a good option. 2. Keep chocolate for dessert Eating Easter eggs on an empty stomach will spike blood sugar levels and put you on a hunger and energy level roller coaster. Make sure you eat Easter eggs after having a protein-based or high fibre meal. 3. Choose wholegrain hot cross buns Personally, you’re better off avoiding hot cross buns altogether, but if you are going to treat yourself, then choose wholegrain hot cross buns as they have more fibre and contain far more vitamins and minerals than normal ones, plus they’re more filling.

‘watching their weight’, a bunch of flowers is the perfect swap. Drop the hint if you’d prefer flowers to chocolate at any time of the year. 5. Small is smart Here’s some good news for chocoholics – recent US research found healthy people who eat chocolate regularly tend to have a lower BMI than those who don’t eat it at all. But the key is having small amounts. A big Easter bunny can have as many as 1075 calories, whereas the small hollow eggs only have about 72 calories. Go for smaller eggs and savour the flavour. 6. Stock your fridge Have plenty of delicious healthy foods on hand so you don’t automatically reach for the Easter eggs. Find healthy substitutes to chocolate that still satisfy your sweet cravings.

4. Swap chocolate for flowers

7. Spend more time playing with the kids

paper rabbit ears, rather than feeding the kids more chocolate Easter eggs and commercial fruit buns. 8. Give in to your cravings Easter is a special occasion and it is okay to eat some chocolate. Studies have proven that if you deny your food cravings, you are more likely to overindulge.

9. Monitor your food Stop mindless snacking over Easter by keeping a food diary – a US study found people who kept daily food records lost twice as much weight as those who kept no records. 10. Build a calorie bank Try to exercise every day over Easter to balance out the consumption of extra kilojoules. The more fuel you burn off via exercise, the more it will counterbalance the extra input. Get the whole family involved by going for a bike ride, a walk or playing a game of 'footy'.

hat a winter we have all had! The weather has left the land incredibly wet and has prevented any work being done on it. Normal winter jobs like muck heap clearing and general land maintenance have had to be left, leaving us all to play catchup as we start to move into spring.

It’s important that once the better weather is here, field maintenance is a must. Whilst it rains grass still grows and it’s essential that it’s looked after. Early fertilising, harrowing and rolling are essential to produce good quality, nutritious grass followed by the first cut. Once done, keep the grass and weeds in check (important if not grazed) and you’ll be quids in; let it get out of hand and this is where your problems will start. Need some advice? Well, help is at hand from local company, JM Paddock & Field Maintenance. Run by Jordan Massey, who holds a Diploma in Farm Mechanisation from Hartpury College (partner with the University of West England) this company offers a high quality and professional service to suit all your requirements, from one-off jobs to monthly contracts. Using Agricultural ATVs and the most advanced Logic implements, Jordan provides what he describes as “compact farming at its best”. “Now is the time to start planning your paddock and field maintenance for the rest of spring and summer, whether you have animals to graze or just want a good looking paddock. Other tasks like automated poo picking, ménage grading and muck heap clearing are all part of our complete range of agricultural services”, says Jordan. “Don’t forget, as the machinery used is compact, the costs are kept low so general land, pony paddock and ménage maintenance, becomes very affordable”.
