s storm clouds gathered, so did the crowds, eagerly awaiting their annual dose of Upton Jazz. The Festival in its 27th year, evolved from the small group of followers in local pubs to gatherings of visitors spreading out from the town, under the bridge and into Fish Meadow.

Strains of Traditional Jazz came from under the Bridge (great acoustics) with Bands like Terry’s Dead Good Boys, Roger Mark's Cornish Armada, Dave Stradwick's Sussex Jazz Kings and the Millennium Eagle Jazz Band amongst others, whilst Lamarotte played their style of Jazz with a wink under the Bridge, in Tommy’s Bar and at Fat’s Place Marquee. Leading the Saturday and Sunday Parades in their newly acquired wellies, this very entertaining, 11 piece, Dutch Band got the feet tapping, the umbrellas twirling and the followers dancing as they belted out their unique blend of Dixieland and Traditional Jazz. Tom Kincaid Trio played their mix of blues-cumswing and Jazz in Lizzie’s Boathouse, Sir Alan’s Hot Groovers improvised in church whilst Des Bacon’s Red Hot Syncopators belted out some traditional material from the Ellington and Armstrong era of the Roaring Twenties, also in the Parish Church. The venue substituted along with Hanley Green School for some rather soggy ground in some

marquees, on Fish Meadow. Fat Sam’s Band, lead by Hamish McGregor, entertained with performances from the Ellington, Basie, Fats Domino and Glenn Miller era, in Fats’ Place. Wellies definitely the order of the day if you wanted to hear quality Jazz coming from the marquees on the Meadow. The mud didn’t dampen the enthusiasm or reduce the

enjoyment one jot, it actually enhanced it. Stoic British

to the last, through muck and more to hear talented Young Jazz Musicians play in Jazz City, hear Claire Taylor singing solo or Barbara accompanied by All That Jazz or even to catch Chris Barber and his Band as they rounded off Saturday night, in Fat’s Place. Too many venues and not enough time even by running between them, which was no mean feat in wellies! This fan will be back for more Traditional and New Orleans style Jazz next year . . . . bring it on!

man sees a sign outside a house: 'Talking Dog For Sale'. He rings the bell, the owner appears and tells him the dog can be viewed in the back garden. The man sees a very nice looking Labrador Retriever sitting there.

g Talkin Dog le For Sa

"Do you really talk?" he asks the dog. "Yes," the Labrador replies. After recovering from the shock of hearing the dog talk, the man asks, "So, tell me your story."

The Labrador looks up and says, "Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was quite young. I wanted to help the government, so I joined the SAS. "In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one imagined that a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at Heathrow Airport to do some undercover security work, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded several medals. Then I got married, had a few puppies, and now I've just retired." The man is amazed. He goes back into the house and asks the owner how much he wants for the dog. "Ten quid," the owner says. "Ten pounds?!!? But this dog is absolutely amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheaply?" "Because he's a lying b&%$ÂŁ?d! He's never been out of the garden!" 8

Olympic Torch Relay : Evesham

S

unday 1st July and it was the turn of Evesham on the 44th day of the Olympic Torch’s journey through the streets and around the shores of our noble land as it traveled en route to the Olympic Stadium.

The bearers of this uniquely elegant symbol, held the Torch aloft for the cheering, flag waving crowds all to see. Flag waving children peered eagerly along the road, looking past the convoy of outriders, sponsor

floats and coaches looking for the Torch and Bearer. Stepping down from the coach and taking the first Torch was Hassan Mehdi who then carried it past the sign declaring Evesham as a winner of Britain in Bloom. Pride evident on the smiling faces of the Torch Bearers as each carried it along tree-lined avenues onwards and down the hill towards the crowds, in the centre of Town. The Lady draped in the Olympic Flag epitomising the level of enthusiasm and support for the local Torch Bearers. The author tried in vain to keep pace with the runners but clearly lacking in fitness, failed dismally, demonstrating that he is not yet ready to take part in the Olympics. 10

The Villager

At each hand over or "Kiss" as it is more affectionately k n o w n , onlookers jostled and competed with the Press Photographers to capture that magical moment as the next torch flame was ignited and the responsibility passed to the next Bearer. Nobody epitomised the proud spirit and clearly demonstrated the pleasure of being selected to carry the Olympic symbol more than number 075, 14year old Max Theyer. A local lad who has selflessly supported his family through some difficult times whilst finding the time to be a cadet in the St John’s Ambulance, Max beamed as he jogged down the road, waving to the crowds on either side. Local people and celebrities alike have acted as the 8000 Torch Bearers up and down the country and have held aloft this symbol which is steeped in history and perhaps they have even given thought to Team GB and the impending 30th Modern Olympiad? August in the Garden Flower Garden

Roses

Take cuttings of perennials, such as verbena, argyranthemums, fuchsias, salvias and pelargonium; dip in a hormone rooting compound then plant in small containers of half and half peat and perlite or peat and silver sand. Water well and keep in a cold frame or on a warm windowsill out of direct sunlight. They should root within eight weeks and can then be potted in multipurpose compost.

Its now time to stop feeding roses as this will encourage soft growth that won't have a chance to ripen before the winter, and will then be prone to diseases. Prune rambler roses that have finished flowering. Cut the long old stems that flowered this year, but leave non-flowering shoots as these should bloom next year.

Herb Garden Take cuttings of woody herbs, such as hyssop, lavender, rosemary, curry plant, rue and sage; treat and pot as per perennial cuttings.

Greenhouse

Continue to mist plants and check shading; also continue feeding tomato plants every week with a liquid tomato feed.

Containers

Prune gooseberries, and shorten the main stems and side shoots to five leaves; prune raspberries and tie in new shoots.

If you are going on holiday, try to arrange for someone to water your containers. If this can't be done every day, to cut down on watering requirements by moving all containers and hanging baskets out of the sun as far as possible. Clay pots can be stood on trays filled with wet gravel. If you have a large display of window-boxes and hanging baskets, think about installing a timercontrolled automatic watering system.

Going Green

Vegetable Garden

Pests and disease can be a problem in the summer months if you are trying to avoid using chemicals; spreading crushed egg shells around plants will help prevent damage from slugs and snails. Another ways to deter slugs and snailes is to sink jam jars into the ground and fill with beer.

Nip off the tips of the climbing shoots of runner beans once they reach the top of their supports.

Fruit Garden Now is the time to plant rooted strawberry runners now to ensure a good crop next year; left any later and your crop will be greatly reduced.

Copying from copies A young monk is assigned to helping the other monks with copying the old canons and laws of the church by hand. He notices however, that all of the monks are copying from copies, not from the original manuscript. So he goes to the Abbot to question this, pointing out that if someone made even a small error in the first copy, it would never be picked up! In fact, that error would be continued in all of the subsequent copies. The Abbott says, "We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son." He goes down into the dark caves underneath the monastery where the original manuscripts are held as archives in a locked vault that hasn't been opened for hundreds of years. Hours go by and nobody sees the Abbot. So, the young monk gets worried and goes down to look for him. He finds the Abbott banging his head against the wall and wailing: "We missed the R !

We missed the R !

We missed the %$@# R !" The Abbott's forehead is all bruised and he is crying uncontrollably. The young monk asks, "What is wrong, father?" With a choking voice the Abbot replies, "The word was . . .

Pershore: 100

The Weather

A hundred years ago, Pershore experienced the wettest summer in living memory with high floods. This followed a heavy snowfall in January after which the river meadows flooded, 16° of frost making an ideal skating rink that the locals took full advantage of. During January conditions were so bad that one Pershore woman had to apply for relief to help her provide for her family of 24 children - with one exception - all girls, and included two sets of twins and one of triplets!

Pershore Swimming Pool

About this time concern was being expressed over facilities available to youngsters to help them to learn to swim in safety. In a riverside town such as Pershore too many accidents were occurring. During the summer months river bathing was fairly widespread. Due to the fact that until well into the 20th century few working class homes had tapped water, it became something of a tradition for people to use the river in which to wash as well as bathe. The problem with swimming in the Avon was the numerous deep stretches with dangerous currents, debris and frequent flash flooding. There were no proper bathing facilities and casual bathing took place almost anywhere. A favourite spot was by the weir where there was an attractive view of the waterfall and the Abbey, with adjacent grassy banks for picnicking. But it was also very dangerous because of its fast rushing waters and many were drowned here over the years. By 1899 accidents had reached such a level that the jury, following yet another drowning, asked that immediate steps be taken to provide the town with proper bathing facilities. In 1911 several townsfolk got together to raise money for a swimming pool to be built. One of these was Peter Hanson, a drapery shop owner in Bridge Street, who organised several whist drives in the town. At one of these, held in the ‘Three Tuns’ he shaved off half his 18

The Villager

beard for a £5 wager, paid by Mr Brant of the Sawmills, Newlands. The following year he organised ‘a jolly dance’ with proceeds going to the pool fund. The pool was to be built by the autumn of 1912 at a cost of £300, and on 29th May 1912 a Swimming Club was established at the Angel Hotel. Presumably the fact that the pool was not built was due to the outbreak of WWI. The money collected was however eventually used for this purpose. In the early 1970’s a group of volunteers led by Win Summerton, opened a second-hand shop in Priest Lane. Together with many others, they organised all kinds of fundraising activities and eventually an indoor pool was opened, appropriately during the celebrations commemorating Pershore’s millennium in 1972.

Aerobatics

In 1912 Pershore had its first aeroplane visit, which circled twice over the town. By the following year such sightings were becoming more frequent, with some wonderful

August 2012

0 Years Ago exhibitions being given by Gustav Hamel. These took place at the racecourse in Defford Road which by then had been licensed by the Ministry of Air as an aerodrome. Subsequent flights took place from here by C.S. Kent who performed flying exhibitions on Sundays that were well patronised by the local inhabitants. However, the racecourse, in addition to often being wet and muddy, was subject to flooding, so a new racecourse was opened in 1935 on Lord Coventry’s land off Station Road.

Golf

On 4th October, 1912, Mr J.H. Baker of Pershore won the Daily Mail Open Golf Competition for a Gold Challenge Cup valued at £500 plus a replica of £50. Pershore had long had a reputation for taking part in various sports, with Craycombe Bank, (the home of the present Evesham Golf Club) being the first local club to be established in 1893. Then known as the Pershore Golf Club, within two years they were holding monthly medal competitions. Mr Baker was a long standing captain and honorary secretary with James Gray, publican at the Duke of York, appointed green-keeper in 1908. He held this position until he retired in 1919, when his son Raymond took over and continued until his death in 1991.

August 2012

During WW2 the course was taken over by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1941 with play continuing for two years around gun emplacements! In 1943 control passed to the Ministry of Works and the course was developed as a training centre for 3,000 American drivers. Huts, tents and service roads were built. In 1944 the old club house was destroyed by a fire which started when the top was left of an anthracite stove. The Americans left on 1st July l944 as part of the D-Day operations, and the camp was then used as a prisoner of war camp.

The Church

On the last day of October, 1912 Fr. Norman Holly of Spetchley promised £300 for the maintenance of a resident priest in Pershore for three years. Although a religious Benedictine monastery was established around 689 this was dissolved on the orders of Henry VIII and the few remaining monks disbanded. Following the Act of Uniformity in 1559 when all were expected to worship at their local Anglican church there must have been many who felt unable to change their allegiance but little is known of the Catholics in Pershore at this time. However by 1914 we do know of some Catholic families in Pershore, among them members of the Hudson family at Wick For some time Fr. Holly had been chaplain to the Berkeley family at Spetchley Park and he set up a Mass Centre in Pershore in the gatehouse of Mrs and Mrs Phillips (the music Hall). By 1912 the Catholic Missionary Society had organised two missions when collections enabled a chapel to be erected in Priest Lane using an old iron chapel that had once stood in the grounds of Wood Norton at Evesham. This had been specially built for the marriage of Louise, sister of the Duke Orleans and Prince Charles, brother-in-law of the King of Spain in November 1897. But that’s another story – and another year! Article by Marion Freeman

Cardio is making you fatter

You know the commonly understood formula for w loss, it is the premise that virtually every mainstrea fitness routine accepts. However, it is an urban my What is it?

Even worse, you may as well circle t It sti surprises meempty how so many loss people can getand thiscome so wrong. 5 most world ofllmainstream weight promises back toHere's wheremyyou started; mo stupid ways to lose weight: overweight than when you started. Let’s put this urban myth to rest once and for all.

Starving yourself over a sustained period of time is likely to Here is the answer: Print this out, underline it, and paste it on your bathroom mirror? damage your metabolism and make it harder for you to lose weight in the long run.

Your body is not a calorie checkbook! Treat it like one and three things happen:

2. Sacrifice a limb

You want to lose weight, so why not just say goodbye to a 1. Phantom weight some and fat burning yes,att but wasting dehydrat limb? Stop focusing onloss: the scales start paying entimore on to muscle the inches. Graband a tape 2. This is the typical outcome of any diet and cardio scenario.

3. Exercise in the 'fat loss zone'

You've been told that you can't exercise too hard

This is the truth of burning body-fat, and staying lean, looking good, and feeling good a because you won't be burning as much fat. Okay, days of your life:

it's true. At lower intensities you burn more fat, but does that mean we should go and have a nap Your body has a fat burning engine that we can compare to a campfire. To turn the engi because we'll be burning more fat. Simply cutting out starchy carbs (bread, pasta, cereals, pastries, white potatoes) will see an improvement in your shape and energy level. Couple this with lean meats, fish and plenty of fruit and veg and you're on to a winner. It's that simple and it doesn't need a fancy name either!

5. Do 1 million sit-ups This drives me and other trainers bonkers! If you're looking to lose a bit chub from your belly then sit-ups aren't the best, sorry. If they were, then we could scrap all that fancy equipment you see in the gym and just invest in a nice comfy matt to lay down on. But, unfortunately, losing fat from your belly (or anywhere else) doesn't happen by targeting particular body parts. Imagine if I wanted to lose weight from my neck. Would nodding my head back on forward help?! If you're looking to lose your belly, get your diet up to scratch first, then spend your time exercising wisely, not doing 1 million sit-ups. Next time I'll give you my 5 most intelligent ways to lose weight. The Cardiologist & the Motor Mechanic A motor mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a BMW M3 when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his car when the mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?" The cardiologist, a bit surprised walked over to where the mechanic was working on the BMW. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc, look at this engine. I opened its heart, took the valves out, repaired or replaced anything damaged and then put everything back in, and when I ďŹ nished, it worked just like new. So how is that I make ÂŁ40,000 a year, and you make ÂŁ1.7m when you and I are doing basically the same work?" The cardiologist paused, leaned over, and then whispered to the mechanic . . . . 26

My Worcestershire Free Solar is all about giving away free solar to qualifying properties in Worcestershire. There are no fees, no catches. FREE.

Your electricity bill will reduce – saving you money You will be reducing your carbon footprint, helping the environment, and helping the country reach it’s carbon efficiencies targets

How can we do this? In April 2010 the government introduced an initiative called the FIT Scheme. The FIT scheme allows investors to be paid for all the electricity that panels generate. This means that if you let us put panels on your roof, you benefit from free electricity, and we sell what is left over back to the grid.     
