e were told that this year more than ever it is so important to support honeybees and other insects as they provide a vital role in pollinating our crops. My husband and I moved house and this was our first summer with a large garden. We wanted to fill the garden with plants but also wanted to do our best for the insects. I’ve read lots of articles about how bees favour blue flowers and get more pollen from single and not double annuals, and so this is what we planted in the borders that surround our lawns. The flowers did well but we didn’t see many bees. That was until our front and back lawns were taken over by clover and when it flowered the bees just loved it. Our problem was that they also seemed to be trying to make nests in the walls of our house and they became most annoyed when my husband filled all the holes. We had to keep the windows closed as the bees took a liking to our

home. We bought a strip blind for the back door but still they entered it in droves. I couldn’t believe the amount of bees my husband and I caught and returned outside.

My reason for writing this is that I am allergic to being stung and so I have always avoided wasps and bees and used to panic when they came near me. You can imagine my surprise when I found that more than 90% of bees in United Kingdom are solitary ones. They are docile, nonstinging and live in small nest in the ground, walls and rotting wood.

hristmas has come early this year, as November saw the long awaited return to Evesham of Marks & Spencer, one of the most iconic British retailers. The complete rebuilding of Abbey Bridge should also be completed this side of Christmas, so 2014 looks set to be a boom period for the town. Next year will also herald a minor landmark in the history of Marks & Spencer, as it will be a hundred and thirty years since Michael Marks opened his first stall on Kirkgate market in Leeds. Michael Marks, of Polish-Jewish stock, came to England from what is now Belarus. In 1884 he met Isaac Jowitt Dewhirst, a local haberdashery and hosiery wholesaler, who was persuaded to lend Marks £5 to open his first Penny Bazaar. Marks spoke very little English, but still became so successful that after ten years he moved to a permanent stall in Leeds’ covered market. It was at this time that he invited Thomas Spencer, Dewhirst’s cashier, to become his business partner (Dewhirst had already turned him down, otherwise we might well be celebrating the opening of Marks & Dewhirst in Evesham). Spencer clearly recognised an attractive business proposition when he saw one – his £300 investment gave him a half-share of the future FTSE stalwart.

At first, this meant selling women’s clothes cheaper than drapers, but these principles have been applied to every area of operation since, from the popular St Michael brand to food (including Percy Pigs, of course, of which over a billion have been sold since their launch in the mid-1990s) and latterly home furnishings. When Marks died in 1907 his burgeoning empire consisted of thirty-four shops and fifteen market stalls. Two world wars could not halt the relentless growth, even though sixteen shops were lost to enemy bombing in the Second World War. By return, staff contributed to the war effort by raising funds to pay for a Spitfire, The Marksman. Marks & S p e n c e r are now a multinational concern, with a presence in more than forty countries, including Wenceslas Square in Prague, Shanghai and Dubai Festival City. And now Evesham.

t's been said that you can gain over five pounds during the festive season! Of course you should let your hair down and enjoy every moment, but instead of spending the first three months of the year trying to work off the additional calories, why not focus these months on sculpting, maintaining or improving the great work you have done during 2013. Use some, or all, of these festive tips to stay in shape this Christmas and you will thank me in the New Year. A healthy lifestyle is an on-going part of your life, not a quick fix that you then destroy in 12 days! 1. Be Prepared This goes for every day of the year in my book, but more so this time of year. Make sure you eat regular meals, have healthy snacks to hand, plenty of water and never go to a party or gathering hungry; it's a recipe for overeating disaster! 20

2. Keep on Moving Just because you have even more tasks to juggle this time of year than you usually do, don't use this as an excuse to become sedentary! If a workout session suffers then, run up every flight of stairs you come across ... yes in those heels! Walk, run, skip, jump or dance, anything, just move and burn off any additional calories you've consumed. 3. HOW is as important as WHAT There are so many ways to cook foods. Ensure you either use a spray oil or measure with tablespoons, never just pour freely! Do not fry anything; grill, bake, griddle, anything but fry. If you have a steamer then use it for all your veg; if you don't have one ask for one for Christmas and go into 2014 with a new healthy eating kitchen toy. 4. Choose Wisely When faced with a buffet or table of food that you didn't have a hand in preparing, assess each dish before you choose what to put on your plate. Anything with colour and freshly prepared pile it high. Anything with pastry, sauce, cheese, cream, white refined carbs â&#x20AC;Ś don't deny yourself everything, but keep it low. 5. you've had one too many, it definitely limits your inhibitions and your nutrition plan goes straight out the window. A small glass of wine is one of the most diet friendly drinks you could choose, but remember to limit the amount you consume. 6. Controlled Contribution If you are going to a dinner party, take a couple of homemade low calorie dishes with you and eat that food only. By doing this you will know what you are eating is calorie controlled, natural and nutritious, and you are contributing to the party. 7. You Can Say No You may be one of those sweet people that likes to please everyone ... except yourself. Even if you're not, it's important to know that it's okay to say 'no' when being offered something that you know is going to harm your health goals. Everyone else is important, but you need to take care of your own needs first. 8. Party Time As this is the party season, a time for enjoyment and letting loose. At every given opportunity I highly recommend that you DANCE like youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never danced before, because dancing burns over 250 calories an hour. 9. Take Note It's important that at this time of year you really listen to your body. Some people eat and drink to the point of feeling ill. You

need to ensure you keep well hydrated with water - notice when you're full, and then stop eating. 10. It's All About Balance If you're going out for dinner have a lighter lunch to keep down the calories and enjoy more food in the evening, but NEVER skip breakfast! If you've been out for a meal at lunch, have something lighter in the evening. 11. Don't Allow Temptation In Unless you're presented with raw vegetables, salad sticks and hummus as an appetizer then say no! Say no to the bread rolls that are brought out or the basket of nachos and crisps, if the rest of your party wants to eat them, make sure they are placed at the opposite end of the table, so there's no temptation in front of you. 12. Care Enough This list is a guide to help you stay healthy, on track and keep the calories low. This aside, relax and enjoy yourself but with love and respect for your beautiful body. Eat and drink consciously and you'll twirl into 2014 with a great start to the year instead of a great amount of body fat on your rear!

Under considerable pressure from the chap behind waiting to hand over the myrrh, he finally blurts out "And Frank sent this". Muffled laughter from the audience ... you just know the child will never forget that moment for the rest of his life!

old, Myrrh and Frankincense are the most famous Christmas presents in history. We all know gold, yet few of us have experienced the heady aroma of the latter two or even know what they are. What is Frankincense? Frankincense is the dried highly aromatic resinous exudate from the Boswellia tree. Native of southern Arabia and east Africa, with site specific requirements of lime-stone rocky soil and morning mists. These gnarly trees produce a material so expensive and highly prized, at its peak, its value rivalled precious gems, gold and rare silks. Its price is partially due to rarity and difficulty in cultivation. Removed from their natural habitat, the trees wither and die. Many have tried and failed to grow Boswellia; for all their gardening know-how, King Solomon and the Egyptians never succeeded. The aroma is a warm, sweet, intoxicating blend of spicy balsam, citrus, with coniferous wood base notes; a fragrance as old as time itself. It is calming, relaxing, mood enhancing and spiritually uplifting. It slows and deepens breathing and has been used to awaken one's higher consciousness, to enhance meditation and prayer. Indeed, such was the obsession of the Ancients with frankincense, it was thought to directly connect you to your god. The smoke can be inhaled, oil applied to the skin or granules chewed and consumed. This mystical precious resin has been traded across the world for over 5000 years, used for personal pleasure, but also in medicine and an array of religious ceremonies.

The Romans, quick to spot a good thing, were keen to make the Arabs an offer they couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t refuse and sent 10,000 troops in 1BC to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;help control productionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;! However, they were beaten by the hot, dry desert and never made it. Nero, however, did manage to disrupt the Frankincense trade, when he burnt an entire year's worth of harvest at the funeral of his favourite concubine.

Aside from ceremonial commitments, frankincense has been used to treat a wide variety of medical ailments ranging from dental disease to skin conditions (including baldness), to respiratory complaints and digestive troubles, across many cultures. The famous 11th century Arabian physician Avicenna particularly noted its antiinflammatory properties. Ayurvedic practitioners have used frankincense to treat arthritis, wounds and support the endocrine system for millenia. In some societies, frankincense was often inhaled in conjunction with opium to conjure what can only be imagined as interesting results!

Frankincense and myrrh were ritually burned in Jerusalem’s sacred temples. It is written that the same three gifts were offered to the god Apollo in 243BC by King Seleucus II Callinicus; so they were nothing unusual. Gold (precious metal), myrrh (antiseptic and for anointing) and frankincense as perfume, but also an agent of healing, peace, bestowing feelings of goodwill and the smoke of which conveys your prayers to heaven.

Stuffed Turkey Roulade If you don't have to cook for a large gathering and a whole turkey is too much, try this easy stuffed turkey roll instead, using turkey escalopes. All the flavour of a traditional Christmas roast, but on the table in no time at all! This can also be sliced to make canapes for Christmas parties.

Serves 4 Ingredients

1 box of sage & onion stuffing 4 large turkey escalopes 12 rashers of streaky bacon

Jar of Cranberry sauce 4 large squares of tinfoil butter for greasing

Method • • • • •

Preheat the oven to 1800C, gas mark 4 Make up the stuffing with half the water described in the instructions. Lightly grease the foil squares and place 3 rashers of bacon in the middle of each piece. Top each bacon base with a turkey escalope, and spread a thin layer of the stuffing on top of each. Spread a tablespoon of cranberry sauce on top of each, then carefully roll up from one end so the bacon is on the outside. Wrap each roll tightly in its piece of foil. • Place the rolls on a baking tray and transfer to the oven for 30 minutes until the turkey is cooked through. Serve with Christmas vegetables.

Roasted Potatoes with Garlic & Parmesan A simple recipe that makes a great side dish to accompany almost any meal. Most types of potato will do, although red is preferable.

Serves 4 Ingredients

700g potatoes, cubed 3 tablespoons olive oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes

40g grated parmesan cheese salt & pepper to taste non-stick cooking spray

Preheat oven to 2000C, gas mark 6. Spray a 9x13 inch glass baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Arrange potatoes in dish and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with garlic, parsley flakes, parmesan and seasoning, and toss to coat evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until potatoes are tender, stirring once half-way through.

e know why we celebrate Christmas but do we know where our common traditions - some we might not even know about - come from?

Christmas Trees are thanks to Prince Albert and originated with the Germans decorating fir trees in their homes. A famous Illustrated News etching in 1848 featured Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children gathered around a Christmas tree, and this popularised the tree throughout V i c t o r i a n England. P r e s e n t s originate with The Three Wise Men. Melchoir, King of Arabia The first Christmas card gave Gold, Gaspar, King of Tarsus gave Myrrh and Balthasar, King of Ethiopia gave Frankincense. Druids believed mistletoe fell from heaven and grew onto a tree that sprang from Earth. Mistletoe thus represented the joining of heaven and earth. A kiss under mistletoe symbolised acceptance and reconciliation, and in some cultures, even marriage. Sending Christmas cards started in Victorian England. Letters took time to write and to share seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greetings with others was a daunting task. In 1843, British businessman Sir Henry Cole asked artist John Calcott Horsley to print some Christmas cards. One 34

thousand cards were printed in black and white and then coloured by hand. Carols were first sung in Europe thousands of years ago, but these were not Christmas Carols: they were pagan Gold, Frankincense songs, sung & Myrrh at the Winter S o l s t i c e

celebrations about the 22nd December, as people danced round stone circles. The word Carol actually means "dance" or "a song of praise and joy"! Carols used to be written and sung during all four seasons, but only the tradition of singing them at Christmas has survived. Christmas pudding took its current form, again in Victorian England, with its origins traced back to the 1420's. It started, not as a confection or a dessert, but as a way of preserving meat at the end of the season. Chief ancestor of the modern pudding, however, was the pottage, a meat and vegetable concoction originating in Roman

times. A silver coin in the pudding is another age-old custom that is said to bring luck to the person that finds it. Good luck or maybe a broken tooth? And some less well-known customs: Catalonia: the Caga Tia or pooping log, is a wooden log, hollowed out, with legs and a face added. He is "fed" every day starting December 8th, and on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day he is put in the fireplace and beaten with sticks until he poops out small sweets, fruits, and nuts. Quaint? Kentucky Fried Christmas: just like turkey in England is a must at Christmas, for the Japanese it’s the Colonel’s Chicken. Since the beginning of this marketing campaign four decades ago, KFC has been associated with Christmas in the minds of the Japanese for generations – well, it takes all sorts! Czechoslovakian tradition: don’t want to celebrate another Christmas single? Then try this. Stand with your back to the door and throw a shoe over your shoulders on Christmas Day; if the shoe lands with the toe pointing to the door, congratulations, you’re going to get married soon! There’s no clue as to how long before you meet your prince charming, though. Krampus is the evil demon anti-Santa, or maybe his evil twin. Krampus Night is celebrated on December 5th, the eve of St Nicholas Day in Austria and other parts of Europe. People dress as Krampus and roam the streets looking for someone to beat with a stick! And my personal favourite: on Christmas day, southern Africans celebrate by eating the plump, fuzzy caterpillars of the Emperor moth, fried in oil!

EVESHAM ABBEY BELL TOWER APPEAL WINS HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND SUPPORT

vesham PCC has received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the Bell Tower Appeal. Award of a first round pass indicates that the HLF believes the project has potential to deliver highquality outcomes and value for Lottery money. Development funding of ÂŁ37,800 has been awarded to help the PCC progress their plans to apply for a full grant at a later date. Overall the project aims to perform urgent conservation work to preserve the Bell Tower for future generations. A programme of activities and fund-raising events is also planned to run throughout next year. The initial phase, the development work, will include archive research and sourcing of appropriate stone for our beautiful grade I listed late medieval Bell Tower, as well as carrying out a detailed programme of photography to help identify the conservation need â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;stone by stone'. Trial

areas will be tested to ensure work methods and materials will meet the highest standard, leading to the next stage of tenders and contracts for the delivery of this major project. Evesham's Bell Tower is the iconic building of the town, a beautiful medieval structure, our very own national treasure. Last autumn it was realized that works to conserve the Tower were becoming urgent. The Appeal Committee prepared this application in spring even before the public appeal was launched via our website

Stan Brotherton, treasurer for the Appeal, said: "There is significant national competition for limited Lottery funds, and we are absolutely thrilled that we've been awarded funding towards the all-important development work. We have achieved a lot in a very short period of time, but there is still much to do. Donations can be made online or via Church House, or if you would like to help or have fund-raising ideas, please do get in touch."
