Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Hello and welcome to the December edition of
T he V illager As this is the Christmas edition, we have plenty of festive articles and adverts for you hopefully something to suit everyone, from Andrew's Christmas cheese board to a Christmas fair for all your presents. Worcestershire Guides have embarked on a challenging project, so please give them all the support you can, and St Richard's Hospice, a wonderful charity and worthy cause, are celebrating their 30th birthday, so don't miss their article on page 47. December is a short month for us because of the Christmas holidays, so if you are thinking of advertising in the January issue, please note that the copy deadline is 3rd December. And whilst on the subject of January, all through 2014, we will be running competitions aimed at attracting new advertisers, so have a look at the website for details of these. Finally, from all of us at Grapevine Publications to all our readers, we'd like to wish you a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

Vive la difference! This is a true story, about an Englishman living near Le Bugue in the Dordogne. One day, he was out in his car and was stopped by the police and asked to give a breathaliser test. At the time, the Englishman was exceedingly drunk! The gendarme signaled to him to wind down the window and then asked him if he'd been drinking, to which the man slurringly replied: "Yes, this morning I was at my (hic) ... daughter's wedding, and as I don't like church much I went to the cafe opposite and had several beers. Then during the wedding banquet I seem to remember downing three great bottles of wine (hic) ... a Corbieres, a Minervois and (hic) ... a Faugeres. Then to finish off during the celebrations ... (hic) during the evening ... me and my mate downed two bottles of Johnny Walker's black label!"

Getting impatient the gendarme warned him: "Do you understand I'm a policeman and have stopped you for an alcohol test?"

The Englishman with a huge grin on his face replied: "Do you understand that I'm English ... like my car ... and that my wife is sitting in the other seat ... at the steering wheel?!"

W
e were told that this year more than ever it is so important to support honeybees and other insects as they provide a vital role in pollinating our crops. My husband and I moved house and this was our first summer with a large garden. We wanted to fill the garden with plants but also wanted to do our best for the insects. I’ve read lots of articles about how bees favour blue flowers and get more pollen from single and not double annuals, and so this is what we planted in the borders that surround our lawns. The flowers did well but we didn’t see many bees. That was until our front and back lawns were taken over by clover and when it flowered the bees just loved it. Our problem was that they also seemed to be trying to make nests in the walls of our house and they became most annoyed when my husband filled all the holes. We had to keep the windows closed as the bees took a liking to our

home. We bought a strip blind for the back door but still they entered it in droves. I couldn’t believe the amount of bees my husband and I caught and returned outside.
article & phtography by Pamela Green
Another place they liked was our warm compost heap and when my husband
Being organic and not using insecticides is so important and each year you will very quickly notice the increase in bees and butterflies. My reason for writing this is that I am allergic to being stung and so I have always avoided wasps and bees and used to panic when they came near me. You can imagine my surprise when I found that more than 90% of bees in United Kingdom are solitary ones. They are docile, nonstinging and live in small nest in the ground, walls and rotting wood.
noticed the bees were nesting there he tried not to disturb them. When the clover flowers on the lawn died back the amount of bees subsided, but we still had loads of butterflies and the garden bloomed.
So, why not take time and like me, find out more about these beautiful creatures. Next year add a mixture of bee friendly flowers to your garden, and patio pots, and help create a buzz in your garden.

On Your Marks … written by Gary Lloyd
C
hristmas has come early this year, as November saw the long awaited return to Evesham of Marks & Spencer, one of the most iconic British retailers. The complete rebuilding of Abbey Bridge should also be completed this side of Christmas, so 2014 looks set to be a boom period for the town. Next year will also herald a minor landmark in the history of Marks & Spencer, as it will be a hundred and thirty years since Michael Marks opened his first stall on Kirkgate market in Leeds. Michael Marks, of Polish-Jewish stock, came to England from what is now Belarus. In 1884 he met Isaac Jowitt Dewhirst, a local haberdashery and hosiery wholesaler, who was persuaded to lend Marks £5 to open his first Penny Bazaar. Marks spoke very little English, but still became so successful that after ten years he moved to a permanent stall in Leeds’ covered market. It was at this time that he invited Thomas Spencer, Dewhirst’s cashier, to become his business partner (Dewhirst had already turned him down, otherwise we might well be celebrating the opening of Marks & Dewhirst in Evesham). Spencer clearly recognised an attractive business proposition when he saw one – his £300 investment gave him a half-share of the future FTSE stalwart.
that soon became closely associated with Marks & Spencer were superior quality and value for money. At first, this meant selling women’s clothes cheaper than drapers, but these principles have been applied to every area of operation since, from the popular St Michael brand to food (including Percy Pigs, of course, of which over a billion have been sold since their launch in the mid-1990s) and latterly home furnishings. When Marks died in 1907 his burgeoning empire consisted of thirty-four shops and fifteen market stalls. Two world wars could not halt the relentless growth, even though sixteen shops were lost to enemy bombing in the Second World War. By return, staff contributed to the war effort by raising funds to pay for a Spitfire, The Marksman. Marks & S p e n c e r are now a multinational concern, with a presence in more than forty countries, including Wenceslas Square in Prague, Shanghai and Dubai Festival City. And now Evesham.
More Penny Bazaar market stalls were If he were alive today, Michael Marks would opened throughout the north of England, to no doubt be amazed and extremely proud be followed by shops in a similar style. ‘Don’t of the success of the company that he ask the price, it’s a penny’ was the slogan started almost a hundred and thirty years to entice people inside, where potential ago, but perhaps not entirely surprised, customers were encouraged to browse as many of his guiding principles are still through the goods on display. Two core values followed to this day. 18 To advertise call 0845 224 7061 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

t's been said that you can gain over five pounds during the festive season! Of course you should let your hair down and enjoy every moment, but instead of spending the first three months of the year trying to work off the additional calories, why not focus these months on sculpting, maintaining or improving the great work you have done during 2013. Use some, or all, of these festive tips to stay in shape this Christmas and you will thank me in the New Year. A healthy lifestyle is an on-going part of your life, not a quick fix that you then destroy in 12 days! 1. Be Prepared This goes for every day of the year in my book, but more so this time of year. Make sure you eat regular meals, have healthy snacks to hand, plenty of water and never go to a party or gathering hungry; it's a recipe for overeating disaster! 20
2. Keep on Moving Just because you have even more tasks to juggle this time of year than you usually do, don't use this as an excuse to become sedentary! If a workout session suffers then, run up every flight of stairs you come across ... yes in those heels! Walk, run, skip, jump or dance, anything, just move and burn off any additional calories you've consumed. 3. HOW is as important as WHAT There are so many ways to cook foods. Ensure you either use a spray oil or measure with tablespoons, never just pour freely! Do not fry anything; grill, bake, griddle, anything but fry. If you have a steamer then use it for all your veg; if you don't have one ask for one for Christmas and go into 2014 with a new healthy eating kitchen toy. 4. Choose Wisely When faced with a buffet or table of food that you didn't have a hand in preparing, assess each dish before you choose what to put on your plate. Anything with colour and freshly prepared pile it high. Anything with pastry, sauce, cheese, cream, white refined carbs ‌ don't deny yourself everything, but keep it low. 5. Beware of Alcohol Alcohol contains lots of calories and when

you've had one too many, it definitely limits your inhibitions and your nutrition plan goes straight out the window. A small glass of wine is one of the most diet friendly drinks you could choose, but remember to limit the amount you consume. 6. Controlled Contribution If you are going to a dinner party, take a couple of homemade low calorie dishes with you and eat that food only. By doing this you will know what you are eating is calorie controlled, natural and nutritious, and you are contributing to the party. 7. You Can Say No You may be one of those sweet people that likes to please everyone ... except yourself. Even if you're not, it's important to know that it's okay to say 'no' when being offered something that you know is going to harm your health goals. Everyone else is important, but you need to take care of your own needs first. 8. Party Time As this is the party season, a time for enjoyment and letting loose. At every given opportunity I highly recommend that you DANCE like you’ve never danced before, because dancing burns over 250 calories an hour. 9. Take Note It's important that at this time of year you really listen to your body. Some people eat and drink to the point of feeling ill. You
need to ensure you keep well hydrated with water - notice when you're full, and then stop eating. 10. It's All About Balance If you're going out for dinner have a lighter lunch to keep down the calories and enjoy more food in the evening, but NEVER skip breakfast! If you've been out for a meal at lunch, have something lighter in the evening. 11. Don't Allow Temptation In Unless you're presented with raw vegetables, salad sticks and hummus as an appetizer then say no! Say no to the bread rolls that are brought out or the basket of nachos and crisps, if the rest of your party wants to eat them, make sure they are placed at the opposite end of the table, so there's no temptation in front of you. 12. Care Enough This list is a guide to help you stay healthy, on track and keep the calories low. This aside, relax and enjoy yourself but with love and respect for your beautiful body. Eat and drink consciously and you'll twirl into 2014 with a great start to the year instead of a great amount of body fat on your rear!

...... and Frank sent this
Frankincense or Olibanum Boswellia sacra, (Burseraceae). Indian Frankincense B. serrata
G
The anecdote: In the time honoured tradition, the three Magi solemnly approach the baby Jesus. The first king successfully presents his tribute of gold, followed by a hiatus; Balthazar falters over his lines. Under considerable pressure from the chap behind waiting to hand over the myrrh, he finally blurts out "And Frank sent this". Muffled laughter from the audience ... you just know the child will never forget that moment for the rest of his life!
old, Myrrh and Frankincense are the most famous Christmas presents in history. We all know gold, yet few of us have experienced the heady aroma of the latter two or even know what they are. What is Frankincense? Frankincense is the dried highly aromatic resinous exudate from the Boswellia tree. Native of southern Arabia and east Africa, with site specific requirements of lime-stone rocky soil and morning mists. These gnarly trees produce a material so expensive and highly prized, at its peak, its value rivalled precious gems, gold and rare silks. Its price is partially due to rarity and difficulty in cultivation. Removed from their natural habitat, the trees wither and die. Many have tried and failed to grow Boswellia; for all their gardening know-how, King Solomon and the Egyptians never succeeded. The aroma is a warm, sweet, intoxicating blend of spicy balsam, citrus, with coniferous wood base notes; a fragrance as old as time itself. It is calming, relaxing, mood enhancing and spiritually uplifting. It slows and deepens breathing and has been used to awaken one's higher consciousness, to enhance meditation and prayer. Indeed, such was the obsession of the Ancients with frankincense, it was thought to directly connect you to your god. The smoke can be inhaled, oil applied to the skin or granules chewed and consumed. This mystical precious resin has been traded across the world for over 5000 years, used for personal pleasure, but also in medicine and an array of religious ceremonies.
Egyptian murals and found in the tomb of King Tutankhamun. Ancient Egyptians bought boatloads of resins from the Phoenicians, for use in incense, cosmetics, perfume, salves for wounds or sores, insect repellent and of course, embalming.
Boswellia Serrata tree
Frankincense
Notable scholars Theophrastus, Herodotus and Pliny the Elder recorded its cultivation and use, with Arabia producing 1524 metric tons per year. It became the most lucrative trade in the world from 1000BC to 400AD, making southern Arabia the richest place on earth. Pliny notes frankincense as an antidote to Hemlock poisoning! The Romans, quick to spot a good thing, were keen to make the Arabs an offer they couldn’t refuse and sent 10,000 troops in 1BC to ‘help control production’! However, they were beaten by the hot, dry desert and never made it. Nero, however, did manage to disrupt the Frankincense trade, when he burnt an entire year's worth of harvest at the funeral of his favourite concubine.
Oil of frankincense has been used by Judaic, Christian and Islamic faiths to anoint members Frankincense travelled from Arabia along the of their congregation; the incense burned at incense and silk roads to India, Europe and China. Roman Catholic Mass and to celebrate Arabic It features in the Song of Solomon, is depicted in weddings and births. However by 300AD, 24 To advertise call 0845 224 7061 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk
the Catholic church was discouraging its use, through association with pagan rituals; only to reintroduce it at Mass a century later. The Catholic church currently uses some 50 tonnes annually. “Olibanum addiction” does exist, it is an alkaloid rich substance and it is entirely possible that some attended Church just to top up the euphoric effects of frankincense! Aside from ceremonial commitments, frankincense has been used to treat a wide variety of medical ailments ranging from dental disease to skin conditions (including baldness), to respiratory complaints and digestive troubles, across many cultures. The famous 11th century Arabian physician Avicenna particularly noted its antiinflammatory properties. Ayurvedic practitioners have used frankincense to treat arthritis, wounds and support the endocrine system for millenia. In some societies, frankincense was often inhaled in conjunction with opium to conjure what can only be imagined as interesting results!
one component shows promise for re-setting damaged DNA. All very exciting and just as mankind finally realises the true importance of frankincense, the Boswellia tree finds itself endangered. They are in rapid decline due to overtapping, climate change, burning, grazing, clearance for agriculture and the invasion of the longhorn beetle, not to mention war zones. However, work is afoot to encourage the Arabian peoples to preserve these trees and research is being carried out to produce improved hybrids for cultivation. One can but live in hope. So why did the Magi gift gold, myrrh and frankincense? When the Magi made their pilgrimage to see Jesus, frankincense along with gold and myrrh were widely available and would have been considered practical gifts as well as symbolic; the standard tribute to honour either king or deity in the ancient world. Frankincense and myrrh were ritually burned in Jerusalem’s sacred temples. It is written that the same three gifts were offered to the god Apollo in 243BC by King Seleucus II Callinicus; so they were nothing unusual. Gold (precious metal), myrrh (antiseptic and for anointing) and frankincense as perfume, but also an agent of healing, peace, bestowing feelings of goodwill and the smoke of which conveys your prayers to heaven.
Finally, after 5000 years of amateur trials, modern medicine decided to investigate this Frankincense ... the very essence of Christmas. interesting plant and ‘discovered’ a huge potential, causing ripples of excitement to run through the research community. Chris Traditions mas article by Brian Joyce
W
e know why we celebrate Christmas but do we know where our common traditions - some we might not even know about - come from?
Christmas Trees are thanks to Prince Albert and originated with the Germans decorating fir trees in their homes. A famous Illustrated News etching in 1848 featured Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children gathered around a Christmas tree, and this popularised the tree throughout V i c t o r i a n England. P r e s e n t s originate with The Three Wise Men. Melchoir, King of Arabia The first Christmas card gave Gold, Gaspar, King of Tarsus gave Myrrh and Balthasar, King of Ethiopia gave Frankincense. Druids believed mistletoe fell from heaven and grew onto a tree that sprang from Earth. Mistletoe thus represented the joining of heaven and earth. A kiss under mistletoe symbolised acceptance and reconciliation, and in some cultures, even marriage. Sending Christmas cards started in Victorian England. Letters took time to write and to share season’s greetings with others was a daunting task. In 1843, British businessman Sir Henry Cole asked artist John Calcott Horsley to print some Christmas cards. One 34
thousand cards were printed in black and white and then coloured by hand. Carols were first sung in Europe thousands of years ago, but these were not Christmas Carols: they were pagan Gold, Frankincense songs, sung & Myrrh at the Winter S o l s t i c e
celebrations about the 22nd December, as people danced round stone circles. The word Carol actually means "dance" or "a song of praise and joy"! Carols used to be written and sung during all four seasons, but only the tradition of singing them at Christmas has survived. Christmas pudding took its current form, again in Victorian England, with its origins traced back to the 1420's. It started, not as a confection or a dessert, but as a way of preserving meat at the end of the season. Chief ancestor of the modern pudding, however, was the pottage, a meat and vegetable concoction originating in Roman

times. A silver coin in the pudding is another age-old custom that is said to bring luck to the person that finds it. Good luck or maybe a broken tooth? And some less well-known customs: Catalonia: the Caga Tia or pooping log, is a wooden log, hollowed out, with legs and a face added. He is "fed" every day starting December 8th, and on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day he is put in the fireplace and beaten with sticks until he poops out small sweets, fruits, and nuts. Quaint? Kentucky Fried Christmas: just like turkey in England is a must at Christmas, for the Japanese it’s the Colonel’s Chicken. Since the beginning of this marketing campaign four decades ago, KFC has been associated with Christmas in the minds of the Japanese for generations – well, it takes all sorts! Czechoslovakian tradition: don’t want to celebrate another Christmas single? Then try this. Stand with your back to the door and throw a shoe over your shoulders on Christmas Day; if the shoe lands with the toe pointing to the door, congratulations, you’re going to get married soon! There’s no clue as to how long before you meet your prince charming, though. Krampus is the evil demon anti-Santa, or maybe his evil twin. Krampus Night is celebrated on December 5th, the eve of St Nicholas Day in Austria and other parts of Europe. People dress as Krampus and roam the streets looking for someone to beat with a stick! And my personal favourite: on Christmas day, southern Africans celebrate by eating the plump, fuzzy caterpillars of the Emperor moth, fried in oil!

EVESHAM ABBEY BELL TOWER APPEAL WINS HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND SUPPORT
E
vesham PCC has received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the Bell Tower Appeal. Award of a first round pass indicates that the HLF believes the project has potential to deliver highquality outcomes and value for Lottery money. Development funding of ÂŁ37,800 has been awarded to help the PCC progress their plans to apply for a full grant at a later date. Overall the project aims to perform urgent conservation work to preserve the Bell Tower for future generations. A programme of activities and fund-raising events is also planned to run throughout next year. The initial phase, the development work, will include archive research and sourcing of appropriate stone for our beautiful grade I listed late medieval Bell Tower, as well as carrying out a detailed programme of photography to help identify the conservation need ‘stone by stone'. Trial
areas will be tested to ensure work methods and materials will meet the highest standard, leading to the next stage of tenders and contracts for the delivery of this major project. Evesham's Bell Tower is the iconic building of the town, a beautiful medieval structure, our very own national treasure. Last autumn it was realized that works to conserve the Tower were becoming urgent. The Appeal Committee prepared this application in spring even before the public appeal was launched via our website
www.eveshambelltower.org.uk and in the Evesham Journal on 6th June.
Stan Brotherton, treasurer for the Appeal, said: "There is significant national competition for limited Lottery funds, and we are absolutely thrilled that we've been awarded funding towards the all-important development work. Many thanks to everyone who has already given to the Appeal: either by direct donation or by supporting a fund-raising event. We have achieved a lot in a very short period of time, but there is still much to do. Donations can be made online or via Church House, or if you would like to help or have fund-raising ideas, please do get in touch." Reyahn King, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund West Midlands, said: "This Grade 1 listed bell tower has many significant historic features and we look forward to receiving the detailed plans for its conservation."

Christmas Cheese Board by Andrew Brooks
C
hristmas is an excellent time to have a wonderful cheeseboard. With a lot of cheese being made in the spring and summer months, these are now getting to a matured age. The spring and summer milk with the grass so green makes a creamier cheese. So here are a few suggestions for a good all round cheeseboard. Cropwell Bishop Blue Stilton. Probably the best stilton you can buy in my opinion.

Snowmen Required W
est Midland Safari Park have drafted in a team of snowmen to make sure that there is plenty of the white stuff around during the annual Santa Safari event that starts on Saturday 23rd November 2013.
Now in it's eighth season, Santa Safari is open every day from Saturday 23rd November until Christmas Eve and incorporates admission to the animal reserves, Discovery Trail and the African Village. Children have their photo taken with Santa to take home, along with a gift of their choice, whilst adults are not forgotten either, as a choice of Mulled Wine or Hot
Despite a wintery chill being forecast, Santa thought it unlikely that any volume of snow would fall naturally. Therefore, the main man made a flying visit to the Park to make sure that their plans to use the latest technology and trained snowmen to deliver a winter wonderland in the Park's Discovery Trail were good enough. After all it would be his grotto for the month long event that sees the area transformed for the festive season. Santa heard that it will take between five and seven days to spray approximately 2000 kilos of the waterproof and windproof 'snow', onto 300 fir trees, grassed areas and buildings to create an impressive amount of snow resembling the kind of volume that he was used to back home ... but, he wasn't convinced. Santa really did want this year to be the snowiest Santa Safari ever and decided that he would just have to take charge. Head Snowman, Jamie Endres, said, "The work of a snowman is never done as every morning before visitors arrive to see Santa, the team have been instructed to inspect all snowy areas to make sure that the snow is deep and crisp and even. And, once Santa departs for the frozen north after 25th December, the snowmen at West Midland Safari Park will continue their quest once more ... this time to wash and shovel the snow away until Santa visits again next year".
Chocolate and Mince Pie is also included in their ticket price. Standard Prices for Santa Safari 2013: Adults ÂŁ15.99 Children (1 to 15 years) ÂŁ14.99 Babies (up to 1 year) ÂŁ7.50 Receive an extra 15% discount per person by booking on any of the following weekday dates: 25th to 29th November 2nd to 6th December 9th to 13th December 16th to 20th December

In July 2014 a group of Worcestershire Girl Guides will join Guides and Scouts from around the world at the National Jamboree in Iceland. The group will be in Iceland from 19th to 31st July 2014, where they will learn new skills and take part in adventurous activities. After the camp they will be exploring Iceland further, visiting geysers and the famous Blue Lagoon. Eleven guides will represent Girl Guiding Worcestershire: two leaders and nine girls aged 14 - 17, and each has to raise £1,500 to go on the trip. They recently spent a weekend designing their logo, and practicing vital skills such as erecting tents, cooking on wood, and building tables from wood and rope, in preparation for the actual Jamboree. The girls are raising funds in a variety of ways: selling ice cream, cake sales, plant sales, collecting unwanted clothes and bric-à-brac, and chocolate Bingo. Whilst £1,500 is a lot to raise they have all shown commitment and enthusiasm for the task. They are very lucky to have been selected to represent not just the county, but Girl Guiding and Britain at the Jamboree, and all are very excited to be going. The guides are collecting unwanted clothes etc. by putting bags (with a covering letter about the project) through post boxes with the dates and times for collection. They have done a bag-pack at a supermarket in Bromsgrove, and the next one will be on 13th December at Asda in Pershore. Watch for details about future bag-packing dates in the “What’s Happening” section of The Villager
Other events related to this project will also be advertised in the “What’s Happening” section of The Villager
Eckington Guides are having a coffee evening at the guide hut in Eckington on
Thursday 5th December between 7pm and 9pm
There will also be various items for sale; if anyone has any unwanted clothes they are welcome to bring them to the coffee evening. 44

A Gift for the Future After you have provided for your family and friends, perhaps you would consider a gift in your Will for St Richard’s Hospice. Leaving a gift in your Will is easy and it can be for as little as 1% of what you leave behind. Gifts from Wills to St Richard’s ensure that we can continue to care for our patients and family members in the future. There a number of options when it comes to writing your Will, but we always recommend consulting a solicitor. If you already have a Will and wish to add a gift to the hospice, your solicitor will advise on the best way to do this.
For more information about leaving a gift in your Will to St Richard’s Hospice, please contact Fundraising Director Tricia Cavell on 01905 763963 or email tcavell@strichards.org.uk www.strichardshospice.org.uk/giftsinwills
St Richard’s Hospice – celebrating 30 years
W
ill you help us secure our future? Our vision – we do all we can do support our patients and their families. We help families through difficult times each and every day and we are committed to continuing to do so in the future. We can only fulfil this commitment with your help. We rely on you for as much as 68% of our funding, so the majority of patients are cared for using your donations, including gifts in Wills. A gift in a Will is an extremely generous, thoughtful and caring way to donate to St Richard’s. Leaving a gift in your Will is easy and it can be for as little as 1% of what you leave behind. Families always come first, but please think of St Richard’s and help us to continue to be here for the local community for years to come. Leaving a gift in a Will may also save on your inheritance tax We are delighted that due to unexpected and generous gifts in Wills we have brought forward plans to meet the specialist palliative and end of life care needs within the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week . This means expanding our Hospice at Home
services. Our Hospice at Home Health Care Assistants can make an immediate difference to the patient and family. For example, with our Hospice at Home help, a patient who wanted to leave hospital and die in their own home, surrounded by their family, was able to do so at short notice. In another instance, within 30 minutes of receiving a request for help from a worried District Nurse, a Hospice at Home team member was on her way to a distressed patient and family to provide support and reassurance. There are many more ways the team can help patients and families: for example providing support for carers in extreme situations. By supporting the carer we can help prevent them becoming too exhausted
to carry on, or perhaps providing immediate care over several days whilst temporary problems are resolved. Income from gifts in Wills has allowed us to increase the number of Hospice at Home staff to 11 so we can help more patients stay at home if that is their wish. Gifts in Wills have also helped us to start expanding our In-patient Unit to care for more patients and offer greater privacy in more single rooms. The new extension will open in our 30th anniversary year, 2014. If you feel you are able to help by leaving a Gift to the hospice in your Will, whenever the time is right for you, your generous gift will allow us to offer our existing services and look to the future. If you would like to discuss leaving a gift in your Will, please contact Fundraising Director Tricia Cavell on 01905 763963, email tcavell@ strichards.org.uk A GIFT IN YOUR WILL, HOWEVER LARGE OR SMALL, WHENEVER THE TIME IS RIGHT FOR YOU, WILL HELP ST RICHARD’s TO CONTINUE TO CARE.
