Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Hello and welcome to the July edition of

T he V illager This month we are celebrating the 50th issue of The Villager, which is why we decided to put a rather unusual picture on the front cover. You can read all about it in the article on page 8 about the Tewkesbury Medieval Festival. When I took over the magazine, five years ago, it was still in its infancy. It was a bi-monthly publication, just 28 pages long, part black and white, part colour and with very little content. Now The Villager is full colour throughout, packed with content - thanks to all our talented contributors - and is published every month. The magazine has grown in size, and number - we now deliver 8,000 copies to homes and businesses from Drakes Broughton to Evesham and from Inkberrow to Upton-upon-Severn. Of course none of this would be possible without the support of our wonderful advertisers, so thank you all very much for your continued support. Here's to the next 50 issues!

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival: The Scuptures

T

wo sculptures commissioned by the Tewkesbury Battlefield Society to mark the site of one of the crucial battles of the Wars of the Roses have been erected on the Stonehill roundabout, on the southern edge of the town. It was from here the Yorkist forces would have had their first sight of their Lancastrian opponents on the morning of the Battle. The opposing armies are each represented by a single oak sculpture. The Yorkists by a five-metre high horse carrying a knight who holds an eight-metre long stainless steel lance topped with a pennant. The second piece, a riderless horse with a similar lance resting across its back, stands facing the mounted knight. Its head is bowed and represents the defeated Lancastrian army. The sculptures were created by artistis Philip Bews and Diane Gorvin, and have been constructed using green English Oak; the natural bends and forks recreating the limbs and outline of the horses. These boughs also reflect the timbers seen in many of the historic buildings in Tewkesbury.

The Battle of Tewkesbury The Battle Of Tewkesbury took place on 4th May 1471 and was the final battle in the War Of The Roses between the Houses of York and Lancaster. Prince Edward was killed either during or just after the battle and is now buried in Tewkesbury Abbey. The Battle Of Tewkesbury is now fought every year with cannons firing, swords clashing and soldiers marching. Thousands of re-enactors and medieval enthusiasts from all around the world visit Tewkesbury as part of the Tewkesbury Medieval Festival. The battleground is filled with knights in armour, warriors and townsfolk in medieval dress. Many sleep in traditional tents and cook over open fires eating typical medieval food. The festival is the largest free medieval enactment and fayre in Europe. Traditional medieval entertainment is provided by jugglers, musicians, dancers and jesters. The Medieval Market is full of stall holders selling everything from musical instruments to medieval style pots and pans. Its a great family day out and a insight into living history.

The project began in 1997, with a design competition funded by the Town Council. After the final approval was given in August 2011 the next challenge was tackled – finding the funding to make the sculptures a reality. Thanks to fundraising, generous donations from charitable This year the Tewkesbury Medieval Festival takes organisations and ‘in kind’ contributions from place on 12th and 13th July. Blind Cowboy An old, blind cowboy wanders into an allgirl biker bar by mistake. He finds his way to a bar stool and orders some coffee. After sitting there for a while, he yells to the waiter, "Hey, you ... wanna hear a blonde joke?" The bar immediately falls absolutely silent. In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says, "Before you tell that joke, cowboy, I think it is only fair, given that you are blind, that you should know five things: "One ... the bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat. Two ... the bouncer is a blonde girl. Three ... I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in karate. Four ... the woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weight lifter. And five ... the lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler. Now, think about it seriously, Mister. Do you still wanna tell that joke?" The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head, and mutters, "Nope ... not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times!"

Happy 25th Anniversary to Helping Hands!

H

elping Hands celebrated its milestone 25th Anniversary in May. Now a leading UK home provider serving England and Wales, Helping Hands has come a long way since it was established in springtime 1989 by Mary Lee. Running the company from her kitchen table in its early days , Mary’s plan to provide quality care and support to people in their own homes was embraced by the local community. During its early years, Mary’s three sons’ commitment to her mission brought family spirit to Helping Hands that still underpins everything the company does today.

The Home Care Specialists

Do you need a Helping Hand? If you are looking for an alternative to residential care or extra support for those everyday tasks that are becoming difficult for you or a loved one – then we’re here to help - from 30 minutes per week to Live-in Care. Our Worcestershire care team has been providing award winning quality homecare since 1989 and can help with: personal care, housekeeping, help getting around or even to provide a break to an existing family member or care-giver.

To find out how we can help you, call: 01905 401 958 or visit: www.helpinghands.co.uk

Whilst studying for school and university qualifications, sons Tim, Ben and James Lee helped out regularly by visiting customers, answering telephone enquiries and assisting the payroll for the growing team of dedicated Carers. Their commitment to Helping Hands and all of the customers it supports remains extremely high today, as they work hard to continue Mary ’s mission following her well earned retirement in 2007. Attracting great media attention in recent months, the state of care in the UK is a prevalent and a deeply important issue affecting families right across the country. Recent documentaries, including BBC Two’s ‘Protecting our Parents’ and BBC One’s Panorama, have really emphasised the need for quality and closely managed care in the UK. Responding to the bad press the care industry has received, Tim comments, “It is important that people looking to receive care are made aware of all of the options available to them. Its crucial to increase awareness of care options such as hourly visiting care and full-time Live-in Care in people’s own homes. Local communities need to know that they do have access to high quality care providers like us at

Helping Hands and that they do not need to be forced into residential care.” 25 years down the line, Helping Hands is still very much run with family values at its heart. For Tim, Ben, Carers, office staff and many long-standing customers in the local community who have been with the company since its earlier years, 9th May 2014 was a truly special day that marked 25 years of outstanding care. Perfect Planting Partners

W

hen planting there are always inventive and ingenious plant combinations to consider that can help to counter gardening pests, from caterpillars to carrot fly. Here is a quick guide to some of the best plant partners. It is not just a matter of picking a plant to counter a pest; there are a number of factors to bear in mind when picking companions, such as growing conditions, aesthetics and plant health. Plant companions should both look good together and require similar growing conditions Vegetable Patch Vegetable gardeners will be all too familiar with carrot fly, caterpillars and white fly. Growing garlic beside carrots will deter carrot fly. If you find your cabbages are ravaged by caterpillars, plant nasturtiums next to them as a decoy, as they will go for the nasturtiums before the cabbages. Another beautiful ornamental solution for the vegetable patch is to plant marigolds with your tomatoes to help deter white fly. This is a good pest control solution and looks beautiful. Lavender (Lavandula) and catmint (Nepeta) are also rumoured to keep rabbits at bay. Pinches of arugula planted between short rows of shallots work well. The leafy, fast-

14

growing arugula smothers weeds and shows remarkably little damage from flea beetles, which often plague it. As an added bonus, the arugula is usually ready to harvest precisely when the shallots need room to grow. Good Flower Bed Fellows As flower beds are more focused on their aesthetic qualities, it is important to consider the texture, colour and shape or form of the flowers. For example, tall flowers with spire flower heads will work well with round headed cup-shaped flowers, such as roses. Meanwhile, shrubs with silvery green or mauve leaves will complement the full-blown roses in bloom. Another factor to consider is plant varieties that will act as natural mulches, suppressing weeds and providing shade for the roots of companion plants to keep them cool. The

growing conditions should echo those of their companion, but not provide too fierce competition, thereby detracting from the other plant. Aggressive plants could crowd their planting partner or soak up all the water and nutrients. Lantana (Lantana), summersnapdragon (Angelonia), million bells petunia (Calibrachoa), verbena (Verbena) and heliotropes (Heliotropium) all have modest water needs and will benefit from the heavy feeding regime that roses require, making them the ideal neighbours for them. They will also look superb in the spaces between roses, which can sometimes look empty as the tall roses look spindly, requiring a considered

planting partner so the observer's eye carries seamlessly from flower to flower. Plants that are members of the onion family, such as ornamental alliums, edible onions and chives, are believed to make roses more fragrant, prevent black spot and ward off aphids. Equally, in French vineyards it is common to plant a rose at the end of a row of vines to encourage bees to visit and pollinate the plants. There are a multitude of perfect combination plants, depending on your garden criteria, whether you grow flowers or vegetables. The best approach is to ensure you plan your garden well in advance of buying and planting your plants.

Berkeley THE

Bar  Restaurant  Weddings  Functions

NEW! Freshly Renovated The Berkeley, formerly The Berkeley Arms, at Spetchley has recently undergone renovation. We caught up with new proprietor, Anthony Palmer, and found out about his commitment to offer a great new place to eat and meet.

to put together the right team in the right location. Working in tandem with Enterprise Inns, we have invested in the business and are here to stay.

What’s new at The Berkeley?

What’s on the menu?

Since my team arrived in March we’ve renamed the business, enhanced the appearance of the building inside and out, put up new signage, overseen a £45k facelift to the garden and car park, created a fresh new menu and scheduled a calendar of great entertainment in the form of monthly tribute acts for the coming months. We are also organising a Wedding Fayre here on Sunday 28th September. 18

What experience does your team bring?

The reason we’ve been able to achieve so much so quickly is that myself, my Operations Manager, Emma, and my Head Chef, Dean, are a long established working team. I’ve spent the last 14 years as General Manager of various 3 and 4 Star hotels across the UK, most recently in Sutton Coldfield. I’d been thinking about my own business for a while but needed

We offer an extensive menu with a great range of dishes on our specials board and smaller portions for lighter appetites. We have partnered up with some amazing local suppliers as fresh locally sourced food is important to us. The bar serves a variety of real ales, continental lagers and wines from around the world with a good selection of these available by the glass. All this can be enjoyed in our freshly

oth my husband and I love exploring and map reading, and whilst in Holland we discovered a breathtaking place. Its name is Kinderdijk, and was marked on the map by some miniature windmills, and is 15km east of Rotterdam. Nowhere in the world can you find a windmill landscape like the one at Kinderdijk. It has 19 windmills either side of two parallel canals and has been inhabited since the 11th century. The people of Holland reclaimed the peat bog and developed the area by digging ditches and watercourses that drain away into the rivers. The windmills were added in 1740. Some are thatched while others are brick built. To this day people still live in them and keep them working. The windmills pump out the water into the reservoir, when the water reaches a certain level the sluice gates open and the water drains into the river. If the river level raises the sluice gates close preventing flooding in Kinderdijk. Each windmill owner has to dredge his section of the dyke every year. The name “Kinderdijk” comes from a children’s story of a cat and a baby who were found floating in a basket on the dike.

Windmills & Wildlife article & photography by Pamela Green

We mostly saw a great number of geese and ducks, nesting or hiding in the reed beds and lots of young families swimming in amongst the lily pads. We were told that goshawks are a common sight but didn’t see any. The bird we liked to watch most was the white heron. They feed in shallow water mainly on fish, frogs, small mammals, and occasionally small reptiles and insects. Most of the time they stand motionless and allow the prey to come within striking distance, then they spear it with their sharp bill. The reed beds that many of the birds nest in are used for thatch and are in great demand but every care is taken not to disturb the birds at breeding times. Kinderdijk can be seen as an example of the battle against the rising waters, which has lasted over the centuries using ingenuity and perseverance.

What captivated us was the enormous amount of wild life. The wet bogs and In 1997 Kinderdijk was placed on the UNESCO flowering meadows create ideal conditions for World Heritage list and is recognised as a wildlife and the area has a lot to offer conservation area. I’m just so glad I was able to birdwatchers, with nearly 470 bird species seen take these photos, as my album would be incomplete without them. and a surprising variety of habitats. 20 To advertise call 01684 833715 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

Friends of St James’ Church Bishampton

T

he Summer Ball held on Saturday 7th June at the Villages Hall chalked up yet another success for the Friends of St. James charity, with a welcome boost to funds which exceeded all expectations in reaching in excess of £1,300. Over eighty people enjoyed the sell-out event with a hot and cold buffet and dancing to local band ‘Hot Fingers’. The charity, set up in February 2012, to maintain and improve the fabric of the 12th church, has gone from strength to strength in its fundraising efforts. To date, trustees and members have organised a fashion show, a poets and poems event, a harvest supper, and two ‘alternative’ Christmas celebrations to which the local community have responded with enthusiasm.

So much so in fact that they have managed in just under two years to raise a jawdropping £25,000 thanks to members’ donations, contributions from functions and major funders, to install underfloor heating and a water supply, as well as restore the original Victorian tiled floor in the church. The Friends are now in the process of completing a car park and toilet facilities subject to more fundraising income. Chairman Martin Dickinson said: “The Summer Ball was a ‘first’ venture of its kind or us but we received a fantastic response from the local community and sponsors alike. “We are moving forward with our plans and are hoping to attract even more members

to come on board and help us to restore and improve our lovely village church which is an important centrepiece of the community. Our membership stands at 84 currently and it would be great to get to 100 this year.” The next events in the charity’s calendar are a talk by two eminent World War II experts on 15th September, the Harvest Supper in October and Christmas Celebration.

Le Rustique French Camembert

by Andrew Brooks

e Rustique was created in 1975 in Normandy, France with a recipe of camembert. Sold in France and over 60 other countries, it is best known for its true taste and flavour.

Easy recognizable for its wooden packaging and its red gingham cloth which was added to the brand by chance when a paper broker, bothered by a very large stock of gingham cloth, suggested that they should be used to place the camembert in the box. Since then it has always been used. With its strong and authentic taste, Le Rustique Camembert is a favourite among cheese connoisseurs. Great full flavour camembert with so many uses.

15. Exercise reduces stress.

ere is a mixture of my 50 reasons to exercise and ways get fit for the summer. 1. Take control. Write down your goals and reasons you want to reach them. 2. Exercise helps prevent strokes and heart disease.

8. Exercise improves body image and gives you confidence.

3. Keep a food diary. It can educate, guide and inspire – and will possibly highlight eating habits you are unaware of.

9. Think "little and often". A small commitment to exercise on a regular basis is better than no commitment at all.

4. Exercise has anti-ageing effects, increases longevity and keeps your body fit and able. 5. Buy a decent pair of trainers. The right footwear is essential, whether you are road running, dancing or playing tennis. Don’t exercise in worn out trainers. 6. Exercise lifts your mood and builds your self-esteem.

10. Exercise strengthens your heart, your bones and improves posture. 11. Move more. More of us are sitting down at desks, in cars, in front of the TV – get up and move, go for a walk and get active.

16. Have a ball. Get a Swiss ball, the body automatically responds to the balls instability and acts naturally to stop you falling off, working mostly your back and abdominal muscles. 17. Exercise boosts mental health, keeps your brain fit and sharpens memory. 18. Find a diet that suits you. Focus on healthy eating and you can’t go wrong. Eliminate processed foods, sugar and limit your alcohol intake. 19. Exercise improves balance and coordination.

12. Exercise improves sleeping patterns.

20. Run. Higher intensity exercise = more calories burnt, which means more weight lost. However, just be careful of your joints.

13. Exercise makes you feel happier.

21. Exercise reduces feelings of depression.

14. Laugh it off ! Laughing 22. Don’t starve yourself, just eat more: avocados, blackboosts the immune system, 7. Portion Control. You need it; currants and blueberries, lowers blood pressure, use smaller plates and fill garlic, greens, nuts, oily fish, reduces stress hormones and them with green vegetables onions and tomatoes. increase muscle flexion. or salad. 32 To advertise call 01684 833715 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

23. Exercise improves learning abilities and creative thinking. 24. Eat and drink less. Cut down on: alcohol, soft drinks, sausages, chips, white bread, and cheese. 25. Exercise reduces back pain and decreases osteoporosis risk. 26. Exercise improves cholesterol levels 27. Take up yoga or Pilates. They promote flexibility; reduce stress and increases stamina and strength. 28. Exercise increases energy and endurance. 29. Listen to Baz Luhrmann’s song ‘Sunscreen’ – “Do one thing every day that scares you” to give you an ‘adrenaline ‘rush’ which increases metabolism, helps fight stress, reduces the risk of stroke and can control allergies. 30. Exercise Prevents colds and boosts your immune system. 31. Eat Breakfast. “Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a pauper”. 32. Exercise improves skin tone and colour. 33. Drink lots of water. I’d recommend at least 2 litres of filtered water every day, more in hot weather or if doing exercise. 34. Exercise alleviates anxiety and helps keep you focused in life.

35. Cut out sugar: cakes, sweets, chocolate and focus on your natural sugars found in fruit – but that doesn’t mean you can overindulge in fruit too! 36. Exercise lowers risk of diabetes, certain cancers and reduces high blood pressure. 37. Don’t ban all foods. Banned foods = forbidden fruits. A little of what you fancy does you good – but only if you stick to a “little”. 38. Exercise habits.

improves

eating

39. Exercise improves muscle strength and joint function. 40. Slow Down. It takes the brain up to 20 minutes to register that the stomach is full, so eat slowly and if you think you want seconds, wait 20 minutes before doing so. 41. Exercise improves oxygen supply to the cells.

46. Sleep. The body’s time to repair and rebuild. If you’re not getting adequate amounts of sleep you will become sleep deprived which can in turn reduce muscle mass, leave you fatigued and not having the energy to exercise. 47. Exercise makes life more exciting. 48. Ask yourself “Am I hungry?" Most of the time thirst is mistaken for hunger. Try having a glass of water when you think you’re hungry and see if it is food you actually need. 49. Exercise improves quality of life 50. Start now!! Why wait until tomorrow, Monday or any day – there is no better time than the present! Start your healthy lifestyle now!

42. Get active with the kids. Encourage your children to be active from a young age and make it a familiar part of their daily lifestyle. 43. Exercise lessens fatigue. 44. Phone a friend. Exercise in any form is far more enjoyable when you are doing it alongside someone else. So, too, is dieting. 45. Exercise productivity, concentration dementia.

The standard of photographic entries was high last year, winners were selected by Judge Josie Reavely who picked two images by Alex Wagner for awards - the categories were Flowers and Humour. The River award went to Christine Brookes, the People award went to Emma Hildesley and yours truly got the one for House & Garden. I have to admit that although I was covering the event for The Villager last year, I found wandering around looking for photo opportunties great fun even if I was occasionally distracted by the various ale houses and eateries displaying their wares. Same topics this year so get your camera out and go find that award winning image this year: if ya ain’t in it …! For the more energetic, there is a 3km fun run on the Sunday, but if you are slightly less energetic, you can always utilise the

mini-bus to get you from the free parking down to the Village where the main activities take place, on and around the lovely Village Green. Watch out this year for the Scarecrows, courtesy of the Friends of Fladbury who will also be running a Scarecrow Workshop - I probably won’t attend that one just in case I end up on a pole on the Village Green, with straw comin' out of my hat!! On Sunday especially for the kids, there is the opportunity to excel at Circus Skills. So, come on guys … put the 12th & 13th July in your diaries and make sure you don’t forget. Don’t miss out ... come Walkabout Fladbury.
