Another article which I hope will be of interest is by Brian Joyce on the changing face of Pershore. And following on from this, over the next few months, we will be running a series of articles on the various towns and villages where we deliver The Villager. So if you have an anecdote about your village - whether it relates to a person or event - that you think we'd like to hear about, please give me a call, or drop me an email. We'd also love to see any photos you may have of "the old days". As I mentioned last month, our new website is now complete, and we have a couple of new offers for both new and regular advertisers. If you don't have a website and don't want the expense of having one built, but would like a web-presence, for a small monthly fee you can have your own page on the Grapevine Publications site, together with a free QR code to put on your advert. Not sure what a QR codes is or how they work? Have a look at the bottom right-hand corner of the next page to see our QR code. Anyone with a smart-phone can scan the code and go straight to our website. If you'd like to find out more about having a web-page or a QR code for your business, give me a call anytime on 01684 833715.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Stinking Bishop Cheese
C
harles Martell began making Stinking Bishop cheese from the milk of his herd of Gloucestershire cattle, to increase awareness of the breed, which had previously been near to extinction. The remarkable smell of the cheese is in the rind, which is washed in perry (the name for cider made from pears) from the Stinking Bishop variety of pear. The pear was named after an infamous Ledbury farmer, Frederick Bishop, nicknamed Stinking Bishop, who was born in the mid-19th century and known for his drunken temper. O n e story is that he blasted a kettle t h a t was on his stove at home, because it annoyed him! He is reputedly buried in the churchyard of the Parish Church of
Colwall, a village between Ledbury and Malvern. Stinking Bishop cheese, despite its alarming name and smell, is mildflavoured and quite delicious. The smell arises from bacterial action on the perry, soaked into the rind.

A Wander Down Memory Lane
. . . . . the changing face of Pershore and its surrounds by Brian Joyce
A
ccording to the Domesday Book, Pershore originates from the words ‘Persh’ (Osier willow used for basket weaving) and 'Ora' (old English for river bank).
Pershore has been around since before the 7th Century when the Abbey was constructed and was the focus of the hamlet. The significance and size of the town grew after the Twyford Bridge was destroyed during the Civil War and the trade route between London and Worcester shifted to using the old river bridge over the Avon. With the advent of the "new" road bridge in 1931, the old river bridge now serves only dog walkers and tourists. Likewise the Toll House is no longer a source of income, as it was for those 18th century landowners who collected from passing trade and travellers. My memory doesn’t extend that far back, but it does go back to 1950's to the place of learning called Abbey Park Primary School (I started there in 1958). Sadly, little is stored amongst the dusty cobwebs in my brain so I had to ask the current Headmaster for access to their records, which go back to the 19th Century. Schools have come and gone, and the education system has evolved, grown and expanded. No longer do the pupils pay their 1p (that’s an OLD penny, pre-decimal per week for schooling; now they even smile in school photographs, and benefit from, nay, grow up with, technology such as the Internet. My family came to the area because my father worked at RRE Pershore (formerly Tilesford) in the 1960's & 1970's. The control tower where he worked for a number of years is now derelict and the "very modern equipment" (now museum pieces!) shown used to handle air traffic. The aerodrome 12
is now mostly commercial in nature and provides fewer jobs for the local folks. Changes to the face of Pershore and environs since the 1950's are many and varied. The population of the town has virtually doubled with the housing estates springing up along Station Road, The Mount, Three Springs Road and various pockets around the town. At first glance, Broad Street, High Street and Bridge Street have changed little; their Georgian fascias remain and in some cases still host the same businesses, hotel and store fronts they did when I first came to Pershore. Sadly now there are some empty premises, and the glove and lace industries of old are long gone. The classical High Street has evolved and sadly, lost so much of its character for being a place for social interaction as well as shopping. Places of worship have changed little over the centuries (barring Henry VIII and Oliver Cromwell's interaction, that is!); schools have been built, modernised and expanded, have more female teachers and have broadened their curricula. But the town remains essentially the same, as the views from the Abbey rooftop demonstrate. As you might expect the Abbey Park Schools, Holy Redeemer Catholic Primary and former Secondary Modern School (now Pershore High School) are still going strong,

although the education delivery in them has changed quite dramatically in last 50 plus years! My previous politically correct article in April prevents me from making too much of these changes, but I do wonder whether the concept of 'spare the rod and spoil the child' is perhaps one of the most significant? We didn't have a school website back then as the Internet and the technology it requires were still in the theoretical stage! As I write, I wonder how many of my classmates are still alive, reside in the local area and have watched Pershore evolve into a thriving community with a reputation for longevity: is it the water perhaps? Supermarket, local market and Sports Centre now reside where once I played as a child in the playground and fields alongside the River Avon. Medical Practices have expanded in number and size, and we now even have a modern Community Hospital replacing the aged and ancient Cottage Hospital. Plum Fayre, River Festival and Party in the Park are now major events. Do I sense a greater community spirit now than I remember back in the 1950's? Many names still appear in the area that have done for decades (Cosnett, Annis, etc); some are even inscribed in the Abbey Tower and date back centuries.

he weather has finally made a change for the better, and we have been inundated with requests to help get your paddocks in tip top condition for some good summer grazing, so a huge thank you for all your calls.
It seems that everybody needs their paddocks spraying for weeds, this is fine but there are some important points to remember. Spraying cannot be carried out if there is a threat of downpours or if it’s windy. Your paddocks need to be rested a few days before, and animals cannot be put back on to graze for a minimum of 14 days after. As we’re unable to book the weather it’s best to ‘be prepared’ – have your paddock ready to go. Need some advice? JM Paddock & Field Maintenance, run by Jordan Massey, who holds a Diploma in Farm Mechanisation from Hartpury College, offers a high quality and professional service to suit all your requirements, from one off jobs to monthly contracts. Using Agricultural ATVs and the most advanced Logic implements, Jordan provides what he describes as “compact farming at its best”. “As the weather is unpredictable it’s difficult to plan for spraying, so keep your weeds under control with good paddock maintenance. Harrowing, rolling and a good dose of fertiliser will help keep the weeds in check and for those of you that don’t graze your paddocks, regular topping is a must. These type of jobs are all part of our complete range of agricultural services”, says Jordan. “Don’t forget, as the machinery used is compact, the costs are kept low so general land, pony paddock and ménage maintenance, becomes very affordable and very easy. Just remember if your paddock needs spraying be prepared; when the weather’s right we’re ready to go - it’s as quick as that”. Don’t forget to check in next month – it’s all about the importance of 'poo picking'!

ast month we visited the dire state of our national waterways; that gardeners need to create wildlife pools ..... what do you mean, you didn’t read it? Now, I hope to encourage you to throw a wildlife garden party. Open your grounds to nature. Create a wildlife pond.
How to keep wet guests hap Location, location, location: The venue or where to site your pond. A pond is a natural mirror and can double your horticultural display or reflect your compost heap .... just a thought! Ideally, select an area with sunlight for about 6 hours. This allows aquatic plants to flourish and flower; tadpoles to mature into frogs. The latter needing all the help they can get. Tadpole mortality runs at 99.75%.
With any large event, research and planning are vital; the difference between soggy depression or vibrant success. Spending time considering where, what materials and the how, is worth the effort. Here is a brief guide for a big topic: When to start? Now! Installing a pond during Summer, allows for maturation in readiness for hibernating animals in Autumn. Safety first: If the pond needs to be safe for young children or pets; install diamon-dek (www.pondsafety.com) or a fence, disguised with shrubs. Messing about in ponds is all part of growing-up. Children (future ecologists and politicians) can learn much about the need for clean, wildlife-secure environments from your pond. 22
If perpetual sunlight is unavoidable, fit a good pond filter. Avoid trees with aggressive roots and leaves that drop into the pond. Size (and shape) matters: Small shallow pools are not long lived; freezing in winter, boiling & evaporating in summer, grow blanket weed, oxygen levels fall. Sauteed frog is not on the menu here!
recommended pond size: 2.5m x 1.5m x ideal depth 900mm to 1.2m Have an organic shape, with long, shallow, sloping sides on 2/3 of the perimeter: animals can escape and thirsty hedgehogs won’t drown. Install shelves, so plants that need different water depths will be happy. The Water-proof Liner (exact opposite of a marquee!). Few are blessed with spring-fed streams over clay, so a good quality liner and underlay are essential. In brief, I

DON’T PANIC. As with all things natural, its a question of balance and timing. It takes 6-8 weeks for bio-maturation, when good bacteria mobilise, things clump together and settlement occurs. Even better, ask the owner of a good, disease free, wildlife pond for a bucket of pondpriming water. Around the pond have: • mix of short and long grass climbing frames for emerging

CBeebies TV star headlining AsparaFest Popular children's star Mr Bloom, from BBC TV's CBeebies, is among the headline acts appearing at the inaugural AsparaFest on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 June at Ashdown Farm, Badsey. Mr Bloom is best known for his popular show Mr Bloom's Nursery, which is in its third series on CBeebies. Mr Bloom, played by Ben Faulks, is a gardening nanny who helps children to get involved and be inspired by nature. The show helps children learn from the experience of nurturing vegetables as Mr Bloom and his team of ‘tiddlers' tend to the plants and produce in his allotment. Mr Bloom will be the headline act from late-morning on the Saturday. The family fun event is an opportunity to celebrate all things asparagus, for which the Vale of Evesham is justifiably proud. There will food and drink stalls, with many championing local produce, music from local and regional bands including King Pleasure & the Biscuit Boys, as well as Sheridan the robotic sheepdog, and appearances from asparagus characters Gus & the Gusettes, the World-Famous Asparamancer and the Asparafairy. The event will be playing host to The Fleece Inn Real Ale & Cider Festival. Children under 10, accompanied by a parent or parents, will be admitted free to the event. Advance tickets cost £7 each or can be bought for £8.50 each on the gate. They cover the whole weekend. Nigel Smith, event organiser and landlord of The Fleece Inn in Bretforton, said: "As somebody who inspires children to learn about growing food, Mr Bloom is a perfect ambassador for our world-famous asparagus. He is adored by children and will be a great attraction to the many families we expect to welcome to our inaugural event." AsparaFest runs from 10am until 9pm on Saturday 1 June and from 10am until 5pm on the Sunday. For more information go to www.facebook.co.uk/asparafest or call 01386 831173 or go to www.asparafest.co.uk. 24

Easy Tips for Planning a Healthy Diet . . . and Sticking to it! 1) Set yourself up for success Simplify. Instead of being overly concerned with counting calories or measuring portion sizes, think of your diet in terms of colour, variety, and freshness. Start slow and make changes to your eating habits over time. Changing everything at once usually leads to cheating or giving up on your new eating plan. Make small steps, like adding a salad (full of different colour vegetables) to your diet once a day or switching from butter to olive oil when cooking. 2) Moderation is key Try not to think of certain foods as “off-limits.” When you ban certain foods or food groups, it is natural to want those foods more, and then feel like a failure if you give in to temptation. I usually stick with the 85%-15% rule: 85% of the time you stick to a clean healthy diet, 15% of the time you can treat yourself – just a little bit! 3) Fill up on colourful fruits and vegetables Fruits and vegetables are the foundation of a healthy diet. They are low in calories and nutrient dense, which means they are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. 4) Eat more healthy carbs and whole grains Choose healthy carbohydrates and fibre sources, especially whole grains, for long lasting energy. In addition to being delicious and satisfying, whole grains are rich in 28
phytochemicals and antioxidants, which help to protect against coronary heart disease, certain cancers, and diabetes. Studies have shown people who eat more whole grains tend to have a healthier heart. A quick definition of healthy carbs and unhealthy carbs: Healthy carbs (sometimes known as good carbs) include whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables. Healthy carbs are digested slowly, helping you feel full longer and keeping blood sugar and insulin levels stable. Unhealthy carbs (or bad carbs) are foods such as white flour, refined sugar, and white rice that have been stripped of all bran, fibre, and nutrients. Unhealthy carbs digest quickly and cause spikes in blood sugar levels and energy. 5) Enjoy healthy fats & avoid unhealthy fats Good sources of healthy fat are needed to nourish your brain, heart, and cells, as well as your hair, skin, and nails. Add to your healthy diet: • Monounsaturated fats, from plant oils like canola oil, peanut oil, and olive oil, as well as avocados, nuts (like almonds, hazelnuts, and pecans), and seeds (such as pumpkin, sesame). • Polyunsaturated fats, including Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, found in fatty

fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies, sardines, and some cold water fish oil supplements. Other sources of polyunsaturated fats are unheated sunflower, corn, soybean, flaxseed oils, and walnuts.
Independent Financial Advisers • Pensions and Retirement Planning • Savings and Investments
Reduce or eliminate from your diet:
• Later Life Advice
• Saturated fats, found primarily in animal sources including red meat and whole milk dairy products.
• General Financial Advice
• Trans fats, found in vegetable shortenings, some margarines, crackers, sweets, cookies, snack foods, fried foods, baked goods, and other processed foods made with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. 6) Put protein in perspective Protein gives us the energy to get up and go— and keep going. Protein in food is broken down into the 20 amino acids that are the body’s basic building blocks for growth and energy, and essential for maintaining cells, tissues, and organs. A lack of protein in our diet can slow growth, reduce muscle mass, lower immunity, and weaken the heart and respiratory system. Protein is particularly important for children, whose bodies are growing and changing daily. Try different types of protein: • Beans: Black beans, navy beans, garbanzos, and lentils are good options. • Nuts: Almonds, walnuts, pistachios, and pecans are great choices. • Soy products: Try tofu, soy milk and veggie burgers for a change. • Avoid salted or sugary nuts and refried beans.
