Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Tiptoe Through the Tulips article and photos by Pamela Green

I

t has always been my desire to take photos of fields and fields of flowers but I have never managed it until now. This year I got my wish and visit the bulb fields of Holland. I have always wondered why tulips are intrinsically linked to Holland, and my research revealed that tulips were imported from the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century and their name stems from a misuse of the Persian word for Turban (T端lbent). My husband and I joined a caravan rally, which runs from April 1st until 6th May. Our destination was Delft, which is sandwiched between Rotterdam and Amsterdam. As well as being known for the tulip fields, it is also famous for Blue Delft pottery and visitors come from far and wide to see it.

Holland that are as much as seven metres below sea level, and water management is really important to the Dutch people. Everyone in Holland seems to ride a bike and there are cycle paths everywhere, even between the bulb fields. It was a lovely sight to see families riding their bikes between the fields of flowers. Since the spring flowers were our main reason for coming to Holland we visited Keukenhof, the worlds largest flower garden. Seven million bulbs are planted annually and the displays were out of this world. The 32-acre site was brim full of wonderful displays of plants, trees and pieces of artwork. If you are a keen gardener this is a must see. They say you always leave the best to last, and the flower parade was spectacular. Leading the parade were local children riding their bikes and peddle cars all decked out in flowers, followed by marching bands and a huge motorized parade of beautiful floral displays. The floats were made of thousands of flower heads and the fragrance was breathtaking.

On our second day we went out exploring and to my delight we found fields of spectacular flowers. The coloured stripes across each field were beautiful, but the different shapes and not to mention scents were simply amazing. Deep ditches surrounded each field. These are called dykes and I was amazed at their width and So, if you want to tiptoe through the tulips, take depth, and that the farmers dredge the dykes my advice and head for Holland. You will not be each year. This is important, as there are parts of disappointed. 8 To advertise call 01684 833715 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

Champagne Charley Celebrates New Role Dormy House creates opportunities for talent ...

C

harley Holland was an admin assistant with a long-held ambition. The 35-yearold enjoyed her job as Administrator for Farncombe Courses, the weekend leisure programme offering a wide range of subjects from history and singing to cupcake decoration. But she also dreamed of one day working in a beautiful spa. The artistic mother-of-two from Sedgeberrow trained in Advanced Nail Techniques 12 years ago, before going on to work at Farncombe Estate near Broadway. So when she heard that Farncombe’s sister hotel, Dormy House, was building a brand new spa, Charley made her interest clear and her employers offered to fund her professional NVQ training in Beauty Therapy. Today, thanks to that training and the immediate success of House Spa, Charley’s dream has come true. House Spa at Dormy House has only been open for three months, but has already been awarded the top rating of 5 Bubbles by the Good Spa Guide and is employing three extra staff to meet customer demand. Charley has been recruited as a nail therapist for 20 hours a week, a job she will manage alongside her admin role for now.

“I love to make people feel good about themselves. Hands and feet play a huge part in self-confidence and I just love the transformation that a treatment brings. Everyone at House Spa has been fantastically supportive and it’s great to be part of their professional team.” Charley’s new “desk” is free of computers, paper filing and telephones ringing. It’s the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Nail Parlour, a calm and beautiful space dedicated to pampering and well-being. Nail colours by butter London are served up alongside glasses of Veuve Clicquot Champagne: this is one part of House Spa that is completely open to outside guests. “We are delighted to welcome Charley as part of the House Spa team,” says spa manager Zoe Douglas. “Since we opened in February, we have sometimes had to turn people away for manicures and pedicures because our six therapists have been so busy with massages and other treatments. Having Charley around will make the Nail Parlour really buzz.” Until the end of May, anyone booking a Sweet Peach Hands Treatment Manicure, Stiletto Foot Protection Pedicure or Gelish for Glossy Nail Strength pays only £45, which includes a free glass of Veuve Clicquot and nibbles. Offer applies Mondays to Friday only and does not include use of other spa facilities. To book, call:

“I feel so lucky to have had this opportunity from Farncombe and Dormy House,” says Charley. “I love the Courses programme, but for years I have been dreaming of a career which made the most Tel: 01386 859910 of my creative side. 12 To advertise call 01684 833715 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

cows’ milk cheddar, usually aged to between twelve and eighteen months. Made with pasteurised milk and animal rennet, Elgar is a traditional cloth-bound cheddar with a strong flavour and a creamy texture. The milk for this cheese comes from a family-owned dairy in Hereford. Elgar has a more open texture than a cheddar and is suitable for cutting or cooking. It is ideal as a slightly lighter alternative to cheddar on the cheeseboard, and can be enjoyed with a glass of full bodied red wine, or with a glass of good dry cider. Great traditional cheese with a full flavour.

Puns for the Educated King Ozymandias of Assyria was running low on cash after years of war with the Hittites. His last great possession was the Star of the Euphrates, the most valuable diamond in the ancient world. Desperate, he went to Croesus, the pawnbroker, to ask for a loan. Croesus said, "I'll give you 100,000 dinars for it." "But I paid a million dinars for it," the King protested. "Don't you know who I am? I am the king!" Croesus replied, "When you wish to pawn a Star, makes no difference who you are."

Back in the 1800's the Tate's Watch Company of Massachusetts wanted to produce other products and since they already made the cases for watches, they used them to produce compasses. The new compasses were so bad that people often ended up in Canada or Mexico rather than California. This of course, is the origin of the expression: "He who has a Tate's is lost!" 16

A national network of some 13,000 community service volunteers has been established to provide practical help when any aspects of day to day care poses a problem, for example, walking the dog for a housebound owner. A national fostering service is provided for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital – volunteers take pets into their own homes and supply love and care in abundance until owner and pet can be reunited. The Cinnamon Trust also provides long term care for pets whose owners have died or moved to residential accommodation which will not accept pets. Arrangements are made between owners and the Trust well in advance if possible, so owners do have peace of mind in the knowledge that their beloved companion will have a safe and happy future. Many elderly folk whose pet has died contact the Trust, bereft and very lonely. It is often possible to place with them a bereaved pet, and somehow there is always an immediate understanding between the two.

cages, for these would only bewilder an old and much loved pet. There are settees and armchairs, large warm rooms to share, rugs on the floor – all familiar, comforting and comfortable. The routine mimics that of the average household and experienced, loving care ensures that even a very old animal soon feels at home and settles happily. v The Cinnamon Trust's wonderful volunteers help people over retirement age and those in the latter stages of a terminal illness by offering all kinds of pet care. We need volunteers who are able to short term foster homes to cats and whose owners are in hospital, respite have died or have gone into residential

offer dogs care, care.

In these instances our volunteers take the pets into their own homes, so ideally in the case of dogs we are looking for people who are at home most of the time. Cats, being more independent creatures, don’t necessarily need someone around all the time. Short term fosters can be anything from a couple of days to a couple of months in duration; the trust covers the cost of food and vets bills and there is 24 hour phone support available. If you feel able to offer your support to our great charity or would like to have a more in-depth chat about short term fostering please call us or download our volunteer

1st Inkberrow Guides Needs You!

O

ur unit is thriving: we have nearly 30 Guides and Young leaders, aged 10 to 14. We do lots of exciting things; from camping and cooking on wood, to First Aid and crafts. There is something to suit every girl and leader. The unit turns 50 next year and has a long history of inspiring girls and women. I am currently teaching at Pershore High School, but I am the exciting position of taking up a Head of History post in Wiltshire, which means I will be leaving. Due to this we are down to one adult leader next year; thus we are looking for new volunteers to continue the running of the unit. Full support is offered and anyone who wishes to come along this term to see what we do, is very welcome to do so. Volunteering with Girlguiding is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in the

community and looks great on CVs. You will learn new skills and meet a variety of people. Anyone who is over 18 can be a leader and no previous experience is needed. If you are interested in helping, or would like to come along and see what Guides is all about, please email me on samguides@gmail.com for further details. The Pubs of Pershore article & photos by Brian Joyce

T

he Romans started the trend by establishing tavernae along their roads where the Pubs or Inns that we know (and love) today were generally a source of rest, food and ale for the commoners and travellers ‌ and many still are.

Not altogether surprising then that some have As villages grew in medieval times, so their evolved into hotels, incorporating this into their function expanded to become the social name. These popular watering holes, in this centres of their communities. Quite often Georgian town, have grown up alongside the these hostelries were posting and coach river or sit beside the two main thoroughfares houses, such as The Angel Inn, not surprising that bisect the community: High Street (becomes given that the main London to Worcester Bridge Street as it leaves Pershore for Evesham) thoroughfare passed over the old River Bridge, just outside Pershore. and Newlands which runs down to the Abbey. 22 To advertise call 01684 833715 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

One or two of these social centres and functional roadside inns are lost in the sands of time - The Coach & Horses is a good example, now known as The Star Inn (a 15th century Tudor posting house whose name is in the top 20 most common pub names along with The Angel). Others like the late 16th century alehouse, the Plough Inn, has been renamed to align with more modern activities - the Pershore Plum Festival - and is now called The Pickled Plum. Similarly, The Brandy Cask, a Grade II listed building dating back to 1780 and which has a local microbrewery, used to be called the Liquor Vaults. Whilst some like the Royal Three Tuns Hotel - a Regency building visited by the then Princess Victoria and her mother, the Duchess of Kent and The White Horse (generally named after the standard of the Saxons) have morphed into restaurants, others like The Plum formerly in St Andrews Road, have disappeared altogether, having been pulled down in 2010.

Many of the signs over the hostelry doors reflect a local function or an association to these. Those like The Millers Arms and Victoria Hotel are perhaps more obvious than others like The Talbot which was in fact a breed of hunting dog. Pubs like ‘New Inns’ often proved challenging to those generating the signage (which are now more usually CGI creations made of aluminium and fibre glass rather than the wood or metal in olden times when they were hand painted) since rnishings it generally denoted a ‘new’ public house.

I

suspect I am not alone in thinking that Mums and Dads are working more and more hours to support their families. So, with Father’s Day just around the corner, I asked several dads with a commitment to fitness how they fit exercise and good eating into their busy schedules. Schedule It Into Your Calendar. Making an appointment for exercise and aiming for a consistent time every day, is an important first step. Put it in your smart phone or in your diary and it will be easier to keep the appointment.

minutes every day can, all by itself, make a big difference in your personal health. And if you bring a light lunch or grab a salad at a local lunch spot, you can fit it all in. Walk with the Family. One of my friends has smaller children, and his strategy is to jog with his kids, his six year old cycles along side him, so they can exercise together. Jogging, walking or cycling with your kids can help you stay committed to the exercise programme (they will remind you) and will help build your relationships.

Pick Fitness Activities You Enjoy. Dads tell me that finding activities that you really enjoy is a critical component to making time for exercise. I have a client who is a triathlon participant, so he runs, cycles and swims. Being constantly in training for a triathlon is a passion, and so my client always makes time for his fitness regimen.

Drink Lots of Water. Whatever your job, you can usually bring a water bottle along with you. One dad who recently got his act together and lost 40 pounds in the last year told me that one of the keys for him was drinking at least 2 litres of water a day. He works at a computer most of the day and he kept a 2-litre water bottle on his desk and drank all day long, filling it up on breaks.

Walk or Exercise on your Lunch Hour. If you have regular lunch hours at work, a good strategy is to spend part of it exercising. Walking for 30

Make Small Changes. Many fathers have reported that working fitness into their daily routine has helped. One dad told me that he

parks at the far end of the car park at work and gets an extra couple of m i n u te s walking to and from w o r k . An oth er whose office is on the fourth floor of his office building has started using the stairs every day instead of the lift. Another dad wears a pedometer and tries to get 10,000 steps each day. Checking the pedometer several times each day, he looks for ways to get steps and if, at the end of the day, he is not there, he goes for a walk around the block or on the treadmill until he hits the 10,000 mark. Check Into Flex Time Options. One dad I talked with has a 90-minute regimen each day that he does on his lunch break. He has worked it out with his employer that he comes in to the office half an hour earlier and stays half an hour later each day and takes a full two-hour lunch break. Often, employers who have such flexibility are willing to offer it for employees who are committed to good health and wellness practices. Check out what options your employer might offer. Take a Bike. Some offices hold a "bike to work month" with cash incentives and prizes for people who opted to ride their bicycle to and from work each day. One dad who participated, found that he could get about 40 minutes of cycling each work day that way. And given that he would spend about 20 minutes commuting in his car daily, he got 40 minutes of exercise with only 20 additional minutes of time.

Do Something During TV Ads. One secret of fitting in fitness is to have a treadmill at home set up near the television, and walk during TV Ads and during the late night news. Again, this does not have to take time away from regular activities; it’s just a way to multi-task with a treadmill. Fitting good nutrition and exercise into a hectic daily schedule can be a challenge for fathers. But the benefits are worth the sacrifice and a little creativity in carving out the time every day can really make the difference in embracing a healthy lifestyle. ALM Fitness Father’s Day Offer What better way to get in shape than to have your very own Personal Trainer? Alternatively, if you want to grab a few friends and train together, then why not have Group Training sessions – a great way for you to all stay committed, motivated and get in shape together.

Dog Grooming by Julie

A 75-year old man who loves to fish is sitting in his boat one day when he hears a voice say, 'Pick me up.' He looks around but can't see anyone. He thinks he is dreaming, when he hears the voice say again, 'Pick me up.'

He looks in the water and there, floating on the top, is a frog. The man asks, 'Are you talking to me?' The frog replies, 'Yes, I'm talking to you. Pick me up, then kiss me and I'll turn into the most beautiful woman you have ever seen. I'll make sure that all your friends are envious and jealous because I will be your bride!' The man looks at the frog for a short time, then reaches over, carefully picks it up and places it in his top pocket. The frog says, 'What, are you nuts? Didn't you hear what I said? I said kiss me and I will be your beautiful bride.' The man opens his pocket, looks at the frog and says, 'Nah, at my age I'd rather have a talking frog.'

Low Fat Banana & Yoghurt Cake This low fat banana cake is a sweet treat without too many calories - which can be reduced by using a light margarine and fat-free yoghurt. It is also a great way to use up over-ripe bananas.

Serves 4

Ingredients 150g margarine 150g brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla bean paste 3 eggs 450g self-raising flour ¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda 150g Greek-style yoghurt 225g mashed over-ripe banana For the Icing:

250g packet light cream cheese 40g caster sugar 300ml Greek-style yoghurt Chopped walnuts and sliced banana, to decorate

Method ●

Preheat oven to 1800C. Grease a 7cm deep, 19cm square cake pan.

Line base and sides with 2 layers of baking paper.

Beat margarine, sugar and vanilla for 3 to 5 minutes or until light and fluffy.

Stir in sifted flour and bicarbonate of soda, yoghurt and banana until well combined.

Spoon mixture into pan and level.

Bake for 60 - 70 minutes or until a skewer inserted in centre of cake comes out clean (cover cake loosely with foil if over-browning during cooking).

Turn onto a wire rack to cool.

To make icing: Beat cream cheese and sugar together until light and fluffy. Fold in yoghurt until well combined.

Spread icing over top of cake. Sprinkle with walnuts and top with sliced banana.

Serve.

The Return of Microgreens

B

ack in the 1980s the trend for microgreens emerged as a fine dining ingredient. Many dismissed it as a fad, but the 21st century has seen a resurgence of interest in these tiny culinary delights. For those who don't remember the 1980s, microgreens are the shoots of salad vegetables such as arugula, Swiss chard, lettuce, mustard and beetroot, which are picked and served just after the first leaves have developed. The average crop-time for most microgreens is 10-14 days from seeding to harvest. Praised for their freshness, they are said to contain high nutritional content, and they add flavour, texture and a great visual dynamic to dishes. Nowadays they are most commonly used to garnish salads, soups, sandwiches and plates. Grow Your Own Microgreens The good news for gardeners is that while microgreens are a fine dining treat and rather expensive, they are actually very easy to grow yourself. You can grow any salad green or herb as a microgreen. You can either buy pre-packaged organic microgreen seed mixes, or simply get a mesclun seed mix and grow them as microgreens. You can choose from a wide variety, in addition to those mentioned above, such as kale, endive, basil, cabbage, peas, spinach, radish greens, mizuna, beet greens and the old favourite watercress.

mix. It is a good idea to add in some organic fertilizer before planting the seeds as well. The seeds will require at least four hours of sunlight each day. If you're growing them indoors, a south facing window sill is best for maximum exposure to sunlight. Diseases and pests should not be a problem, as the seedlings will be growing for such a short period of time before you harvest them. Harvesting Your Microgreens The optimum time to harvest microgreens is after the first set of true leaves has grown. Experienced gardeners will be familiar with the phenomenon of seed leaves which appear first, so the second set of visible leaves are the first "true" leaves. Seed leaves don't actually resemble the true leaves. The true leaves should develop about 10 to 14 days after planting. To harvest, use a pair of scissors to snip the stem at soil level. Unfortunately, you cannot then use what is left of the plant for a further harvest as they have had such a short time to develop. However, the old roots can be left in the ground or seed tray as nutritious organic matter and the soil used for replanting more seeds.

They can be grown either in an outside garden bed or even inside on a sunny window sill. As you are harvesting them young, they will not need a lot of room, so scatter seeds about one eighth to one quarter of an inch apart. Then cover with an Growing and harvesting microgreens is so fast eighth of an inch of soil and water gently. For and simple that virtually any level of gardener best results be sure to use an organic potting should be able to do it. 32 To advertise call 01684 833715 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

ell it seems that winter has well and truly left us and spring is really bedding in, the weather is warming up and the fields are coming into their own. It’s important that now the better weather is here field maintenance is a must. In rain or sun grass still grows and it’s essential that it’s looked after and not left to get out of hand. Early fertilising, harrowing & rolling are essential to produce good quality, nutritious grass followed by the first cut. Once done, keep the grass and weeds in check - important if not grazed - and you’ll be quids in; let it get out of hand and this is where your problems will start. Need some advice? Well, help is at hand from local company, JM Paddock &

Field Maintenance. Run by Jordan Massey, who holds a Diploma in Farm Mechanisation from Hartpury College (partner with the University of West England) his company offers a high quality and professional service to suit all your require-ments, from one off jobs to monthly contracts.

Using Agricultural ATVs and the most advanced Logic implements, Jordan provides what he describes as “compact farming at its best”.

“Now is the time to start planning your paddock and field maintenance for the rest of spring & summer, whether you have animals to graze or just want a good looking paddock. Other tasks like automated poo picking, ménage grading and muck heap clearing are all part of our complete range of agricultural services”, says Jordan. “Don’t forget, as the machinery used is compact, the costs are kept low so general land, pony paddock and ménage maintenance, becomes very affordable”.

n just twelve months, West Midland Safari Park have added not one, but five new giraffe to their collection as part of a European-wide breeding programme. After an initial quarantine period of 30 days each in a refurbished and heated giraffe house, all five received extra indoor care during the wettest winter on record. The new giraffe can now be seen in 'African Plains' that forms part of the 4-mile drive through. Head Keeper, Noel Carey said, "Between them, our new giraffe have travelled thousands of miles to reach Worcestershire. For those animals that have been raised in the UK, getting used to our staff and settling down was relatively easy. However, for those giraffe arriving from Europe, it was a different matter. It was evident that as the keepers chatted to them in English, the giraffe appeared to be quite bemused. We can only surmise that the giraffe simply didn't know what the keepers were talking about! All five new giraffe have mixed well with the existing two male giraffe that have been at the Park for the past twelve years. And thankfully, all newcomers now seem to recognize and understand their new keepers". The first new giraffe to arrive on 21st March 2013, was Bwindi - a three year old female from the Czech Republic; swiftly followed on 10th May by five year old female Faida from Chester; then came female Arusha on 23rd August, also three years old, from the Czech Republic; followed by yet another three year old female Akacia on 23rd

October from Denmark, and last but not least a male, known as Rufus who travelled from Yorkshire on 4th December 2013, and who is also three. It has long been thought that giraffe are mute. However, they do communicate with each other by using a series of squeaks and moans, which whilst not clearly audible to humans, do enable them to make contact with other giraffe over long distances in the wild, using infrasound. The 'African Plains' form part of the 4-mile selfdrive safari which is included in the standard admission price of £17.99 for adults, £12.99 for children 3-15 years and £15.99 for concessions. Admission also includes Discovery Trail, Penguin Cove, Sea Lion Show, Twilight Cave, Creepy Crawlies, Seaquarium, friendly animal encounters, Mark O'Shea's Reptile World, African Village, Meerkat Mayhem, Walking with Lemurs and a free return ticket. Theme Park rides are charged extra in all cases. West Midland Safari Park and the Adventure Theme Park is open daily until 7th November 2014. Further information is available by phone: 01299 402114 or on the website: www.wmsp.co.uk.
