Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

We have a bumper issue this month, with a great selection of articles from gardening to dog grooming. As you've no doubt heard, the experts are now saying we should be eating more than our "5-a-day" when it comes to fruit and vegetables, so with this in mind, be sure to read Amy's tips on how to increase your veggie intake. You might also want to try your hand at growing your own, so have a look at the article on Urban Vegetable Gardening. James Neal of Pendas Computers has some helpful advice on what to do if you have Microsoft XP on your pc, and if you're looking for a new way to get fit, Xtreme Bootcamps on page 20 might be just thing for you. Enjoy the rest of the magazine, and thank you to everyone who has contributed articles ... keep 'em coming!

"No News from Guernsey" Bishampton resident’s book dream realised!
A
long standing resident of Bishampton, Peter Jesson, has realised a lifelong dream of publishing a book about his cousin’s life as a prisoner of war following his capture on German occupied Guernsey. “No News from Guernsey” relates how Lieutenant Desmond Mulholland MC of the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry, a qualified barrister and a resident of Guernsey, was sent with a colleague to carry out a reconnaissance of the island in July 1940 on the orders of Sir Winston Churchill. After three weeks of hiding from the occupying forces however, they were forced to give themselves up to the Germans. Desmond was sent to the first of many prisoner of war camps where he spent the next four and a half years in Germany, Poland and Czechosolovakia. His mother also suffered the same fate for hiding him. Desmond Mulholland kept a diary of his experiences which form the basis of the book which Peter has written, giving a first hand account and at the same time, an intriguing insight into the life of a prisoner of war, but with an unexpected twist at the end. His father, John Edward Mulholland, was an Army Intelligence Officer in World War One. Peter said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have finished the book and am looking forward to launching it in May. “The hand-written diary came into my possession when my father died and I really 8
wanted to share it. I hope it will interest people who find this period of history as fascinating as I do.” Peter is still a regular visitor to the island where his great grandparents, grandparents and great aunt and uncle lived although he has never been a resident there himself. He is launching the book on Friday 2nd May at the German Occupation Museum on Guernsey, after which it will be available to buy from good bookshops or by emailing peter.jesson@hotmail.co.uk Peter is a member of Bishampton History Society (www.bishampton.org.uk) and helped fellow members research the names for the reinstatement of the village’s war memorial which took place last year.

he mines on Bodmin Moor had their heyday in the mid 1800's when technology allowed men to dig to great depths underground in search of tin and copper. They have left great scars on the moorland landscape with their eerie remains. These gaunt skeletons serve to remind us of the hard working men, women and children who lived and worked these barren moors and went deep underground in search of riches they rarely found. Today, the sheep take shelter from the wind and rain, while birds’ nest in the r u i n e d chimneys. The Cheeseboard 100 Barnard's Green, Malvern, WR14 3ND
Y-Fenni
by Andrew Brooks
-Fenni takes its name from the Welsh town in which it is made - a town more often referred to as "Abergavenny" by the English.
Each cheese is made from mature cheddar cheese made with pasteurised cows' milk, then blended with whole-grain mustard and Welsh ale. The mixture is pressed firmly into moulds and then coated with a pale yellow wax. It has a full, tangy, mustard flavour, moist texture and a pale-yellow colouring speckled with the mustard grains. Y-Fenni is often enjoyed as part of a ploughman's lunch. The consistency of this cheese makes it excellent when melted, served on toast or even on steak. And it's a great looking cheese on the Cheeseboard.

HELP A HEART HELP A HEART A group of motivated volunteers from Inkberrow are launching a campaign that could save lives. The Help a Heart campaign aims to improve the awareness of first aid skills alongside fund-raising to provide lifesaving Public Access Defibrillators. Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the UK. Approximately 60,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests occur every year and 12-16 young sudden deaths occur every week. Early access to CPR and defibrillation can increase survival from sudden cardiac arrest by up to 75%. A defibrillator is a safe and easy to use device, designed to be used by anyone. It delivers a potentially lifesaving controlled electric shock to the heart of someone suffering from a cardiac arrest. Can you kindly donate and help us raise enough funds to purchase a defibrillator to be placed in your community? With your support we can help protect the lives of the 5,300 people living in Inkberrow.
Over the next few months, the HELP A HEART campaign will be running a variety of events for the community of Inkberrow to help raise awareness and promote the need for life saving first aid and for public access defibrillator. All Training & Awareness Sessions are FREE OF CHARGE. Here are the dates to look out for:

A
bout 30 members of the Bishampton History Society, together with visitors from Pinvin and Flyford, were entertained with a fascinating piece of ancestral research by Maggie Tohill, at Throckmorton Village Hall on 20th March.
Maggie was amazed to learn that her mother had a brother she had never known about. The memory of losing her father in the First World War, then her brother in the second, was too painful for Maggie's mother to confide to her children. The 50th anniversary of her uncle’s death with the retreating British Expeditionary Force was the catalyst which led to a journey of painstaking and meticulous research in British, Belgian and German archives to find out how and where he died - and this at a time when the internet was not a useable resource.
We will be mounting an exhibition in August at No. 8 in Pershore and also - with other events, including repeats of the Village heritage trail guided walk - exhibitions in St James’ Church over the period 13th to 15th September as part of National Heritage Open Days. As part of the project we hope to share any WW1 experiences of family and friends you have from that period. We have some artefacts already, but if you have any photos, letters, telegrams or artefacts from the war period that we could borrow for the exhibitions, we would be very grateful.
The resulting journey of discovery led to lasting friendships with the people of the village where her uncle h e ro i c a l l y died defending a bridge head for five hours. This defence allowed the rest of his Regiment to safely retreat. At a civic ceremony to unveil a commemorative plaque to her uncle and the handful of brave men who died or were captured in the defence of the village, Maggie and her mother were presented with freedom of the Village. As part of the current events to commemorate the centenary of the First World War, the Bishampton History Society are working on a research project which hopes to find out what difference the war made to the village and whether this reflected the same social changes elsewhere in the country.
Our next talk in the Ockenden Room at the Villages Hall, will be on the 13th May at 7.30 pm by Dr John Fagg. John will talk about what he has discovered about three Worcestershire villages - including Bishampton. There is no charge for members and £2 for visitors. A guided tour the Guildhall, Worcester is planned for later in May, date and time to be confirmed. Please check for details on the website:

Urban Vegetable Gardening on a Patio or Balcony
Y
ou don't need a few acres of land in the rambling countryside to turn your hand to vegetable gardening.
As the price of property continues to rise and space becomes a precious commodity, more and more of us are thinking how we can utilise outdoor spaces to grow our own vegetables. Whether you plant up a window box on a window ledge or use a balcony with tiered plant trays, there are a number of ingenious ways to create gardening space if you are willing to be inventive. Consider Your Available Space Before thinking about planting, it is important to identify the space you have available. Where does the sun hit it? Is it shaded? Where does the wind come from? This will determine what will be best to plant. You will not be able to grow some things. Potatoes, for examples, grow best when dug deep and it would not be practical to plant these (although not impossible!).
planting. If you plan too many plants it will result in crowding. This will cause your plants to be weak, as they will be in fierce competition for light, water and nutrients. Allow your plants plenty of space to develop. Plants are a lot like people - they need their space to flourish! Be aware of available indoor spaces that could also be utilised for growing. For example, if you have a sunny window sill, basil will appreciate the warmth of being indoors.
If your property is over a few floors, it might be a perfect place to plant a climber vegetable such as beans on the lowest levels as you can allow them to grow up the property and use the different floors for easy harvesting. Be aware that beans will also require a cane to give them something to climb up.
Container Preparation
Whilst enthusiasm is a great quality in a gardener, do not be too ambitious in your
Layer stones at the bottom of pots to help excess water drain away and help prevent
18
It is important to use compost specially designed for containers, as this will retain water better and contain extra nutrients that your plants would ordinarily get from the ground. Check on compost packaging for soil or loam-based composts, extra nutrients or plant food and water-retaining granules.

root rot. Deep pots are a good solution if the available floor space is limited. Equally, different vegetables will have different pot width requirements, so while one courgette will need at least a 33cm-wide pot, basil will only need a 15cm-wide pot. A 25cm pot should be ample for some beans, carrots or salad leaves. Stagger Planting If you plant lettuce across a few weeks, then you will be able to harvest it in stages, rather than having it all ready in one go.
Decoration A popular trend amongst urban gardeners is to use quirky decorative features. A beloved old pair of wellies could be recycled as pots for carrots. Care Pots will dry out quickly so water often (but don't over water). Protect your vegetables from wind damage or pots blowing away, a common hazard when gardening high up, by weighting down pots and tying plants to canes or trellis.

I know what you’re thinking, but it’s not as bad as it sounds. Throckmorton-based Xtreme Boot Camps was started by mother and son team, Zoe and James Evans. They only employ fitness-qualified serving and ex-military instructors to whip willing ‘recruits’ into shape. “Boot camps are always popular,” says James. “But Xtreme Boot Camps offers much more than a bog standard workout. We’re different. All the exercise programmes are based on genuine military exercises.” Xtreme Boot Camps is well established around Worcestershire with Evesham High School being the location for one such camp.
Jo Tustin, who has been to every boot camp since Evesham’s launch in January 2014, says: “Boot camps are pretty challenging, but after each session you have a real sense of achievement. “Everybody at the class is so friendly and welcoming and every session is different. The instructors run monthly fitness tests so you can see your fitness levels improving.” Boot camps are open to anyone 16 or over, of all abilities, regardless of level of fitness. Hour-long sessions are held at Evesham High School every Tuesday and T h u r s d a y, 7pm-8pm, Saturdays 11am-12pm. However, I s u g ge st turning up at least five minutes early, as late comers will have to ‘drop and give 20!'
“There’s plenty of outdoor space for extensive Boot camps also run in Stratford-upon-Avon, exercises,” comments James. “You’d also be very Upton-upon-Severn and Chipping Norton, and much mistaken to think that boot camps don’t soon to launch in Worcester. run in the winter months because it’s too dark or too muddy. The Indigo Kings’ homecoming and launch of their second album ‘Contotallyfused’
T
National and Local Radio, including Jazz FM. Mostly written by the band’s bass player Carl Ward-Brassington, the songs were inspired by 1930’s jazz clubs.
It’s been three years since The Indigo Kings first played at Cheltenham Jazz Festival. Formed only weeks before and fresh out of the rehearsal room, they played a set on the free stage, which marked the debut gig for the Cheltenham based original jazzy blues band. The band are known for their modern vintage songs with swinging piano slabs, creamy sax, memorable lyrics and delicious harmonies, all wrapped in musical performance and style aplenty. Drawing comparisons to other artists is not easy, as they have their own unique style, but one way to explain it is the Andrews Sisters meets Billie Holiday meets Diana Ross with a sprinkling of Caro Emerald.
At the Jazz Festival, the band will be officially launching their new album ‘Contotallyfused’ with twelve more original tales of life and love. This, the band’s second album, takes the jazzy bluesy foundation of ‘against a brick wall’ and pushes the influential sphere wide open. With band members collaborating on the songs, this time around there is a bit of soul, vintage pop and even a hint of Latin jazz in the mix. The songs tell stories about falling into, out of, and being fed up with love, along with tales of broken hearts, broken promises and broken dreams, but thankfully no broken bones. Memorable lyrics, trademark harmonies and a collaborative songwriting approach makes for an album that is full of surprises.
his year’s Cheltenham Jazz Festival features some exciting homegrown talent, as The Indigo Kings are being showcased at the Festival with a concert in the Jazz Arena, Montpellier Gardens on Monday 5th May.
Their first album ‘against a brick wall’, The band will be supporting the new album released in 2012, received great reviews from launch with a summer tour, taking in several 24 To advertise call 01684 833715 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

of the big jazz festivals including the famous Upton Jazz and culminating with a main stage appearance at the Twinwood Vintage Festival on 25th August 2014. Cheltenham is the icing on the cake for the band though. As well as being home, it’s also the Premier Jazz Festival in the UK, bringing many of the big stars of jazz and blues to the town. “It’s a great venue and so exciting for us”, said a member of the band. “It’s the icing on the cake and start to our tour. We are so chuffed to be chosen by the festival for this showcase and it is great that it ties in with the launch of our new album. “I just can’t stop eating broccoli … help me!”
I
can safely say I have never heard anyone ever say that. I’ve never said it and I’m pretty sure you never have either? However, we all know that vegetables are KEY for health and weight loss - I could list a million reasons here, BUT … how many of us manage to eat enough? Not many. We live in a world where we’re told we should aim for 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day! It’s actually a bit of a myth! The WHO (World Health Organisation) actually recommends closer to 9-11 portions of veggies per day! We need to eat a lot more to combat the nutritional and environmental stress our bodies are bombarded with on a daily basis. Plus, the amounts of nutrients available to us in our vegetable supply (and overall food supply), even if we are eating well, is nowhere near the amount it was 50-100 years ago. In fact, one study showed that it 28
took 7 more cups of spinach to gain the same nutrient density as 1 cup 60 years ago! SO … what can we do to get these essential super foods into our diet without feeling like a rabbit gorging away on lettuce all day? Try some of these: 1. Turn your salads into a nutrient packed power house by replacing iceberg lettuce and romaine lettuce with baby leaf spinach, kale, rocket and watercress. 2. Make a vegetable omelette for breakfast (or any meal). Mixing a load of chopped vegetables into your eggs is a perfect way to disguise them! 3. Dip veggies like celery, carrots, and broccoli into healthy fats like hummus or guacamole to make them tastier.

Perfect for a mid-morning or afternoon snack and a very good choice if you are planning a buffet or party. 4. Fill the freezer with veggies. Fresh vegetables are great, but they can start going past their best before we are ready to use them. If you have frozen vegetables on hand there are no excuses! 5. Add veggies to your meat dishes and no one will realise (great for kids). Grate vegetables like carrots, squash, cucumber into things like hamburger patties, meatballs, minced beef chilli or even in a homemade curry. 6. Replace bread with lettuce wraps of romaine or collard greens when making your next sandwich. Try this and you won’t look back. Simple yet very effective, especially when trying to lose weight. 7. Make vegetables into starch alternatives. Instead of mashed potatoes, try mashed cauliflower or mix sweet potato with
mashed carrot. These are far healthier than the mash we may be used to. Also swap the fries for baked sweet potato fries (not technically a veggie but very tasty and better for you). Give some of these a try and watch your veggie intake soar. • Your body will thank you. • You will be more alkaline (this is HUGE!)

Leek & Mushroom Risotto Risotto is a great stock-cupboard dish for any meal and can be made easily with ingredients you find in the fridge. This version is vegetarian, but can be used as a base for adding meat or fish if required. Serves 4 Ingredients 3 tsp olive oil 2 leeks, sliced ½ onion, finely diced 8-10 sage leaves, chopped tarragon to taste 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 litre stock, chicken or vegetable 150g arborio risotto rice 250g chestnut mushrooms, sliced pinch salt 1-2 tbsp parmesan cheese, grated Method ●
Bring the stock to the boil and simmer gently.
●
Add 1 teaspoon of oil to a separate pan on a low heat on the hob, add leeks and onion and stir briefly. Cover and leave on lowest heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
●
Add the sage and tarragon, another teaspoon of olive oil, stir, and then immediately add the risotto rice, stirring to coat with the oil.
●
Add the stock, stir well and continue to cook over a low heat, stirring occasionally until the rice is cooked through.
●
While the risotto is cooking, warm the last teaspoon of oil in a small pan on a low heat, then add the crushed garlic and mushrooms with a pinch of salt.
●
Stir, increase the heat slightly, cover and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
●
Remove the lid and increase the heat slightly to finish off.
●
Once the risotto and mushrooms are cooked, add the mushrooms to the risotto and stir in. Add the parmesan to taste, and serve.

Microsoft XP : end of an era
M
icrosoft have announced, after a 12 year lifespan, that from April 8th they will cease supporting Windows XP.
This covers all aspects of automatic updates for XP and any future development of the operating system (OS). They have relented a bit on updates for their popular Security Essential anti-virus package running on XP systems and these updates will continue until July 2015. So what does this mean? In reality Microsoft have not been developing XP for a number of years but have just been producing security or minor software bug updates as and when problems are identified or become apparent and it is these that will cease. This does not mean that on 8th April your PC will stop working, just that potentially you are now more vulnerable to any new infections or exploitations of holes in the software. On a brighter note, other companies have announced - Google for instance - that they will continue to produce updates and security patches for their web browser Chrome running on XP for another year or so, but this time span is vague and the clock is now ticking. Nor does it mean that your anti-virus package will stop protecting you either, just that over time you will become more vulnerable and less secure. So what to do?
2. Increase third party security. This really is the absolute minimum required and anyone still running MSE should replace with either a more secure free offering or, better still, a paid for heavyweight anti-virus/malware package within the next few weeks. 3. Upgrade the PC. Most PC’s built within the last four years stand a good chance of running a higher version of Windows successfully although the hardware of the time will not have been optimised for say Windows 8, and as such will not make use of all its security facilities, but that’s not too important. The problems here are these: a) The hardware is “old” and is it worth the expense or risk of upgrading? Most PC components are very reliable but like all things electronic, can fail and the last thing you want is to pay out for an OS upgrade only to have the hardware fail some six months later. To put this into context it can happen but is rare for desktops so is worth considering. Generally I would not consider upgrading older laptops. b) You may have to, for example, increase the internal memory and if you currently run DDR2 memory chips this can be a reasonably expensive upgrade, I personally recommend a minimum of 4Gb to run Windows 7/8 successfully.
1. Do nothing. There are some 300 million PCs c) What is of more concern is legacy or old out there still running XP and will continue to applications running under a modern do so for some time no doubt, as either OS. Most can be made to work with people are unaware of the support issue or some degree of success but are choose to ignore it. If I were a writer of inevitably not supported, so if help is Malware I would now be waiting until well needed it’s not forthcoming - Microsoft after 8th April before releasing it, knowing it Money springs to mind. will not be stopped if it attacks XP and that’s There is no “straight” upgrade path so assuming I decided to target XP users. We will d) data needs to be taken off the old PC, not know what the implications are until the new OS and any applications sometime after this date or indeed if anyone installed and the data transferred back. has really bothered. XP has been for some This can be time consuming - an years the most vulnerable of the Windows estimate is around three hours. versions. 32 To advertise call 01684 833715 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk
4. Replace the PC with a modern unit. This is the route Microsoft would have you follow: new powerful hardware, modern OS (Windows 8.1 – which despite the urban myths, is actually very good) and a fully supported hardware/ software solution. If you do nothing then it is likely nothing will happen ... at least in the short term, but we just don’t know what may occur or is lurking around the corner. In addition, over time the overall risk will inevitably increase as potentially more and more vulnerable areas are uncovered within XP which are then exploited, malware released and then allowed to propagate around the web. So its finally goodbye to an OS which has been around for a long time and is still used by many reluctant to change. But it is showing its age and there are better offerings out there, more secure and pleasant to use, but with a learning curve and financial impact.

Pershore Abbey article & photos by Brian Joyce

ising to over 150ft above the Abbey Grounds, this majestic 10th Century edifice dwarfs even the largest of the magnificent Oaks and Elms that surround it. Watching silently over this riverside community as it has done for more than a thousand years, it dominates the skyline and is visible from all around the Vale of Evesham.
belfry in mediaeval t i m e s without the use of modern day cranes.
An Abbey, a Monastery, a place of worship, of quiet and even of refuge, a place for social interaction and even for entertainment, this building could tell some tales - even some about my family and me! Both my father and I were confirmed here by the Bishop of Worcester and my father also served as a sidesman in the Abbey for many years. You could say that it was an integral part of my early school years - Abbey Park School where I was educated, could be seen from the tower.
The sounds of Choirs, Brass Bands and Orchestral music Handel’s Messiah was recently performed - are all sent forth from under the rising buttresses, parapets, flying arches and vaulted ceiling. Intricate carvings, gargoyles and delicate tracery abound wherever you look. All of the original architecture has survived despite several fires and gales. Some parts of it may now support the old river bridge over the Avon (from the 1380's possibly) when it was decided that the responsibility for repair lay between the Abbot of Westminster (who owned the land) and the men of the Town.
Intimidating and cold - before they deployed under floor heating - and yet still able to provoke such passion and contention - never more so than when the decision was taken to replace those beautifully ornate old pews with chairs. I remember my p a r e n t s ’ indignation at this, and the petitions being raised! And so it has been a part of my history, just as it has been a major part of the history of the Georgian market town of Pershore.
Nowadays it looks down upon the Vicarage and St Andrews Church, both of which stand less than a stone’s throw from the Abbey itself. Many pass by the Abbey without giving it so much as a second glance, where others may pass under the archway door and into the mists of time and fascinating history. As one looks around this truly magnificent piece of architecture, you can't help but wonder what stories it could tell us all were it able to speak? I know some of them!
The sound of the bells ring out loudly across the Vale - those bells being bigger than me and possibly just a tad heavier too - and one cannot but wonder how the builders and engineers of the day managed to haul them up to the 36 To advertise call 01684 833715 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

a reclamation business in Herefordshire. I found a supplier for the Sapele hardwood timber, galvanised metal supports, stainless steel nuts and bolts, and got started. hree years ago whilst gardening, I decided that the bench we had was so old and unsafe, it was time to invest in a new one.
I made four, which immediately sold, so I then designed a colour leaflet to give to potential customers.
I spent many happy hours visiting garden centres and DIY stores, but nothing caught my eye. Then by chance, whilst on a trip to Dorset, I saw two sets of cast iron bench ends in a ‘junk’ shop and decided to buy them and make the benches myself.
The feedback I have had has been very encouraging; my customers like the cast iron ends as these can't be found at garden centres or DIY stores. Each set of ends is first sand blasted and then given two coasts of Hammerite paint. The Sapele timber has two coasts of Sandolin wood preserver, and all the fitting being high grade stainless steel, will never rust.
Once completed, the benches looked so good in the garden, that several of my friends and family asked me to make benches for them. I found some more cast iron ends and did just that. Everyone I made them for was so pleased with the quality and finish, that they recommend I go into business to produce them commercially. So I bit the bullet and invested in ten sets of Victorian cast iron bench ends purchased from
The benches look great in any garden, and as they will last for years could be handed down through the generations. I feel very proud that my little workshop business has become so successful. article by John Roberts

The Beauty of Pershore Gardens on show at the Town Library
A
superb exhibition of photographs of Pershore's finest National Gardens Scheme gardens is set to open on Saturday 3rd May.
The photographs were mostly taken by local photographer Shirley Jones immediately before last year's Open Gardens Show, which raised ÂŁ4,300 for the NGS. Others were taken by Janet Stott, who has also framed and curated the show, or by the gardeners themselves. Shirley, herself a professional gardener, was enthusiastic about the immense variety of gardens in Pershore: "For quite a small town, the standard is astonishingly high", she told us, "I just couldn't stop clicking, and finished up with over 500 photographs!" The exhibition, in the upstairs gallery at Pershore Library, will be opened at 11am on the 3rd by Charles Tucker, the Mayor of Pershore, and will last throughout May. This year's Open Gardens runs on the 7th to 8th June and the hours are 1pm to 5 pm. Tickets can be purchased prior to the event from Blue in Broad Street or from the Library, and then from Number 8 or any of the open gardens on the open days. article by John Williams photographs courtesy of Janet Stott & Shirley Jones

Mum's the Word on Safari
S
taff at West Midland Safari Park had their hands full this Mother's Day caring for the new mums and their babies born at the Park during the past few weeks. The first baby of the year was a Congo buffalo calf born on 23rd February 2014, a female weighing in at a healthy 24kgs - or just over three and a half stone. The youngster, who has been nicknamed 'Connie' by Park staff, was rather shy to start with, much preferring the warmth and comfort of her stable which she shares with new mum, rather than the great outdoors that was until the sun shone this week. Once outside there really was no stopping her. Connie covered one lap of the African reserve with mum in tow, in record speed before returning to her stable for a wellearned afternoon nap. Angela Potter, Deputy Director of Wildlife, said, "Congo buffalo are a new species to West Midland Safari Park. The four adults only arrived during 2013 and to have a female calf so soon is really good news. Adult Congo buffalo are strong animals that can weigh up to a ton and with their broad chests, large heads and horns are ideal for forcing their way through dense bush land and forest habitat that they occupy in the wilds of sub-Saharan Africa. Needless to say, this species have few natural enemies.
Connie is doing well and can be seen charging around with mum in the animal reserve most days, it seems without a care in the world". Other new mums with babies born during March at West Midland Safari Park include Eland and Addax. Standard admission prices to the park are:
£17.99 adults £12.99 children 3-15 years £15.99 for concessions.
This includes the four-mile, self-drive safari, Discovery Trail, Penguin Cove, Sea Lion Show, Twilight Cave, Creepy Crawlies, Seaquarium, friendly animal encounters, Mark O'Shea's Reptile World, African Village, Meerkat Mayhem, Walking with Lemurs and a free return ticket. Theme Park rides are charged extra in all cases. For more information about West Midland Safari Park please go to: www.wmsp.co.uk West Midland Safari Park and the Adventure Theme Park is open daily until 7th November 2014.
