Welcome to the May edition of
T he V illager Last month, we featured a charming and unusual letter box on the front cover, and I've had several calls and emails from readers asking where it is. So for anyone who is still wondering about this, it can be found on the Alcester Road, in Radford (near Inkberrow) about 200 yards from The Wheelbarrow Castle pub. This month's front cover is a photograph of catkins on a Salix caprea 'Pendula' or Kilmarnock Willow. Our increased distribution has attracted several new customers, and hopefully will continue to do so.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The Robot : a cautionary tale . . . ! This is a story about a man who buys a lie detector robot that slaps people when they lie. He takes it home and decides to try it out at dinner that night. He asks his son what he did that day. His son replies, "I did some schoolwork." The robot slaps the son. The son says, "Okay, okay! I was at a friend's house watching movies." Dad asks, "What movie did you watch ?" The son replies, "Toy Story." The robot slaps the son. The son says, "Okay, okay! We were watching porn." Dad says, "What?! At your age I didn't even know what porn was!"

16 ways to maximize your workout: Kick start your summer fitness plan TODAY! 1. Limit your workouts to 30-40 minutes: Though the tendency of some people who really want to get a lot out of their workouts is to spend a lot of time at the gym, the truth is that after 30 or 40 minutes, the benefit isn’t as great. To go that long, you’d have to lower the intensity of the workout, and that means that you’re spending too much time working out. It’s better to work out at a higher intensity for a shorter amount of time. 2. High-intensity workouts: If you’re just starting out with exercise, it’s best to take it slow. If you’re running or cycling, for example, build up your endurance for at least a month before you get into anything more intense. That means going at a rate where you can easily talk without being out of breath. However, once you have that base of endurance, step up the intensity to step up the effectiveness of the workout. 3. Protein: Many people don’t pay enough attention to getting the protein their muscles need to rebuild. If you don’t, you are going to get very little out of your workout, as both cardio and strength workouts require protein for building muscles. I recommend either whey or soy protein shakes. 4. Water: Be sure to hydrate throughout the day. It takes a couple of hours for your body to absorb the water, so you can’t just drink right before exercise. Make it a habit to drink water regularly throughout the day. 14
5. Carbs: Although the low-carb craze might say otherwise, carbs are our body’s main source of fuel. If you do intense workouts, you will need carbs, or you won’t have enough energy. If you do a shake, be sure to include carbs — or a banana is a great source of low fiber/high glycemic carbohydrates that you need for exercise. 6. Shake before and after workout: It’s best to take a protein/carb shake just before your workout and then just after. Taking it before your workout increases the flow of amino acids to your muscles during training, giving them the building blocks they need. After the workout, the shake stimulates muscle growth. Also take a small protein/ carb meal 60-90 minutes after a workout — a meal replacement bar would work fine. 7. Slow lifting: Many people contract their muscles slowly and then release more quickly. But if you lift slowly in both directions, you are maximizing each move. Lift and lower to a 5-second count in each direction. 8. Heavier weight: When you’re starting out, it’s best to start with lower weights so you can focus on good form. But once you’ve gotten your form down, it’s best to lift the heaviest weights you can lift while still keeping good form. Don’t sacrifice form for heavy weights — that is ineffective. But heavy weights, with good form, can give you better results in a shorter amount of
To advertise call 0845 224 7061 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk
time. Heavy weights are not just for those who want to bulk up — that’s a common misconception. 9. One set - to failure: Instead of doing 2-3 sets, as many people do, maximize your effectiveness by doing just one, with heavy weights, until you can no longer keep the proper form. Lifting to “failure” doesn’t mean that you should lift the last few times with a wobbly or inefficient form. 10. Compound exercises: Instead of isolating your muscles with exercises such as the bicep curl, you can maximize the time you spend in a workout by doing exercises that work out multiple muscle groups at once. With just a few exercises, you could get a full-body workout. Another benefit is that your muscles are working together as they do in the real world, rather than alone. 11. Balance lifting: Instead of having exercises where you’re sitting down or holding on to something or otherwise stabilized, it’s more effective to do them standing up, or on one leg, or on a Swiss exercise ball. These types of exercises force you to balance yourself while lifting, which brings your core muscles into play. This gives you a stronger overall body and allows you to lift more over time. 12. Pick a cardio exercise you enjoy: It’s no fun to exercise if you hate it. And you won’t keep it up for very long. Pick something that’s fun — running, walking, swimming, biking, hiking, rowing, etc. After the initial phase when you’re getting used to exercise, you’ll start to have a blast and look forward to it. 13. Mix it up: Don’t stick to the same workout routine for too long, or your body will adjust to the stress level and you won’t be getting an effective workout. For strength
training, change your routine every few weeks. 14. Good form: For strength training especially, and swimming, form is very important, but it’s also important for other types of exercise. If you’re strength training, start with lighter weights so you can work on your form. It’s good to have an experienced spotter or trainer who knows good form to help you for the first month or so. Never sacrifice form for heavier weight. For swimming, you’ll need to get a coach to teach you form. 15. Hills: If you run or bike or walk for cardio, you’ll want to incorporate hills (after the first month or two of doing it at an easy pace on flat ground). These will make you stronger and make your limited workout time even more effective. Take them easy at first, but once you’re used to hills, you can get a good pace going. Either use a hilly route or do repeats on one hill. 16. Circuits: One mistake that people make is to do multiple sets of the same exercise without rest between the sets. This doesn’t allow your muscles to recover and it’s a waste of your workout. But instead of doing a set, resting, and then doing your second set, it’s more effective to move on to multiple exercises in a circuit, so that you don’t rest between exercises but do rest each muscle group. This will give you a good cardio workout while you do your strength training.

‘High' Society or 'How to attract the right sort of pond life to your garden party'
Y
ou sit motionless, glass of bubbly in hand, the perfect guest. A rustle behind you indicates the orchestra is assembling, you listen to their traditional zip, zing and twang. The air is electric with anticipation, a breeze of excitement whispers through the gathering gloom and the chorus begins . . . . ’ribbit ribbit’. Surely you weren’t expecting Handel’s Water Music? This is evensong! One of life’s real pleasures is to perch quietly by a healthy pond, teeming with life. As the year progresses frog song gives way to crickets, but there is always the familiar plop and gloop of things jumping into the water, susurration in the reeds. The very stuff of Wind in the Willows; sadly a diminishing scenario.
Established wildlife pool
19th century Britain possessed almost 1¼ million ponds, naturally occurring and man made for running mills, watering livestock, cultivating carp. ‘Man’s pursuit of cheap food and consumer goods’ in the last century reduced this to around ½ million. Of those that remain, 80% are unfit for habitation, stagnant and overgrown, their biological condition ruined over the past decade alone (see Government Countryside Survey commissioned 2007, published 2010) Not heard of this report? The results are so bad, the government-of-the-day ignored it for a year, before quietly publishing, sans press release. No wonder it is buried on their web-site.

Improvements enjoyed during the 1990’s have ceased and 75% of English/ Welsh rivers are too polluted to support any life. Apparently, sparkling clean water for Ratty and Mole has been all but eliminated from our landscape. Why has this happened? Modern agricultural practices are partly culpable. Silt and fertilisers leach from field to ditch to stream, but that is nothing compared to the oily, salt-laden contaminated water running off our roads and

Business Editorial
Why Businesses Fail! A controversial subject, especially in the middle of a recession, but one worth exploring. So why do businesses fail? Well there are many reasons, but here are some examples which prompted me to write this article. The first was a small local business that recently closed down. This business was doomed from day one, not because of the type of business, but because of the attitude of the owner. The business itself was not exactly unique, but the products and services offered were of a specialist nature, which meant there is little competition but sufficient demand for it to have been very successful. Why then did it fail? Quite simply because the owner was unwilling to tell anyone outside her local area about it. Yes, I’m again talking about our old friend: advertising!
Unfortunately, for whatever reason, she failed to see the need to publicise her business, and so paid the ultimate price: failure. The second example is a very common one. A couple of weeks ago I asked a prospective customer why he'd decided not to advertise. His answer: ". . . business is bad at the moment, so I'm not advertising anywhere until it picks up". Whilst I understand the reluctance to spend money if there's not much coming in, the simple fact is things won't pick up unless he advertises. The third example to prompt this article was a frustrating internet search which had me tearing my hair out! All I wanted was a website where I could choose some flowers and pay for them online. Simples – to quote a well-known meercat!
. . . if you
When approached about advertising shortly after the business opened, the owner was adamant that she didn’t want to advertise – not just with The Villager, but anywhere – the business didn’t even have a website; she “just wanted to see how things go”. Well we now know how they went – down the drain! And there was no need for this to happen. Starting a business in the middle of a recession is risky, but go about it in the right way and it can be a very smart move: if you can survive a recession, once it ends, your business will literally fly. But it takes careful planning and preparation, and of course, lots of advertising. Tell the whole world about your business using electronic advertising (a website) and use paper advertising to drive local traffic to your website.
So I googled florists in the area and got a list of about a dozen. The first eight either didn’t have a website, had no arrangements to choose from or no prices! The ninth had a few out of focus photos, and again no prices, at which point I gave up, googled "Interflora" and paid the extra delivery charge (which I would have preferred to spend on the flowers).
fail to plan, then you plan to fail . . .
A fundamental requirement when starting a business is a sound business plan, and one of the main components of which is how the business will be promoted. There is a saying which is pertinent to most situations in life, this one in particular: “If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail”. This little business should have been a great success; the owner obviously had the necessary skills, and a good high street presence. 24
And the moral of this story is: if you want to be successful in business today, you must have a website and you must use it correctly. These florists should all have had a full gallery of (good quality!) photos of their standard arrangements, together with the prices. It’s pointless having a website if all you have on it are your contact details. That's like having an Aga and only using it to boil water for a cup of tea! Your website can be a very powerful business vehicle – use it. Put as much information on it as you can, add lots of photos (if these are relevant) and of course, all your contact details. Then start the engine of your business vehicle using a bold, eye-catching paper advert to direct customers to your website. A simple formula – but it works!

Five Houses of Religion There were five houses of religion in a small town: The Presbyterian Church, The Baptist Church, The Methodist Church, The Catholic Church and The Jewish Synagogue. All the churches and the Synagogue were overrun with pesky squirrels. One day, the Presbyterian Church called a meeting to decide what to do about the squirrels. After much prayer and consideration they determined that the squirrels were predestined to be there and they shouldn't interfere with God's divine will. In The Baptist Church the squirrels had taken up habitation in the baptistery. The deacons met and decided to put a cover on the baptistery and drown the squirrels in it. The squirrels escaped somehow and the following week, there were twice as many. The Methodist Church got together and decided that they should not harm any of God's creation. So, they humanely trapped the squirrels and set them free a few miles outside of town. Three days later, the squirrels were back. But . . . The Catholic Church came up with the best and most effective solution. They baptised the squirrels and registered them as members of the church. Now they only see them on Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Easter and Christmas. Not much was heard about the Jewish Synagogue, but apparently they caught one squirrel and circumcised him . . . they haven't seen any squirrels on the property since!. 28

CHRIS PACKHAM photographer & conservationist
Article by Brian Joyce
C
hris Packham . . . genuine, modest and unassuming. Equally a man of many talents, a perfectionist and self critic when it comes to his own photography. Broach the right topics and his passion and enthusiasm are as self-evident as they were during his Wild Night Out presentation to a packed Huntingdon Hall in Worcester. These topics can be his painting/art, his chair collection (not for sitting), restoring old cars (e-type Jag, TR4 or Aston Martin DB6), music (Punk Rock) or his two poodles (Itchy & Scratchy) but certainly also photography, nature, conservation, wildlife and the plight of our world today. Whilst chatting with Chris prior to his Wild Night Out delivery, I could feel his overriding passion and strong desire to change things for the better; to improve the plight of many endangered species and perhaps even re-introduce some who have left our shores; such as the lynx and the wolf. From being a punk rocker and member of a band in his youth, Chris moved into photography (selling his band gear to buy a camera) and natural history on TV, assisting initially with filming and camera work. His fascination with animals and nature, directed his career. He puts his publicity and TV exposure to good use educating us about conservation and better ways to care for our planet and its valuable wildlife. In his youth, Chris spent hours cycling around Hampshire, where he still lives, clutching his Observer’s Book of Birds Eggs. Documenting kestrels, their eggs and chicks was the first major challenge for young master Packham. His first real scientific study was Population & Breeding Density of Kestrels in the Lower Itchen Valley which subsequently won him the Prince Philip Zoology Prize. Chris then moved from Reptiles to Raptors ("raptor" being a term used to refer to birds of prey). Very soon raptors lead to badgers, barn owls and more, whilst the New Forest was replaced by more exotic locations such 30
as the Antarctic Islands, rain forests, deserts, oceans and mountain ranges. Needless to say exotic locations brought exotic birds, animals and mammals to study and photograph, and occasionally took him to exotic local night clubs! Listening to Chris talk about his life and his enthusiasm for nature, it is easy to be drawn into his world, and be infected by his passion and enthusiasm for nature. His desire is for us to approach elements of saving the planet in different ways, taking a more modern and habitat based approach, rather than just saving single species. This may include educating the Chinese on the use of modern medicines replacing their current penchant for rhino horn (amongst many others) or perhaps just putting up barn owl nesting boxes in proximity to uncultivated land and away from major roads. This latter initiative is a success story in the UK and has pulled these beautiful creatures back from the brink. His usual approach is often underpinned by the blend of public figure championing the cause (as sponsor, VP and President of numerous organisations such as the Hawk & Owl Trust, RSPB and a wide variety of wildlife and wildfowl trusts) and acting as an agent provocateur and outspoken individual. Talking about overpopulation in China and India (the human species population growth is the biggest single factor impacting habitats) when mixed with their limited and toxic water supplies means they are headed for major problems in the not too

distant future. Chris really believes that we will continue to lose species such as lions, tigers and perhaps even rhinos, and many habitats too, but eventually there will be a “decline through the human governance by economics and a consequent increase in the governance through environmentalism. He believes and hopes environmentalism will have its day and we will understand our role in the continuing decline of the environment. He strongly believes we have the intelligence, the knowledge and arsenal of abilities to change things, improve our lot, the lot of our wildlife and therefore ultimately the lot of our planet. He would still like to visit, photograph and support conservation in habitats where they care and have a focused desire to change things. On his list still to visit are the Baltic States, the Atacama Desert in Peru and to see Phillipine eagles in their natural state. Far from ensconcing himself in an ivory tower determining what we do wrong - a view he thought was the solution in his early days - he prefers the active, hands-on and direct approach; learning about our planet and its valuable wildlife as he goes about the world, teaching and educating us in the error of our ways. Engaging us, especially the younger generation(s), to come and do what he feels so strongly about – wildlife and nature; this is what he would like as his legacy. I highly commend his dedication, stamina, staying-power, enthusiam and passion . . . would that I could follow in his footsteps.

Best Duck Joke . . . ever!
S
o this duck walks into a pub and orders a pint of beer and a ham sandwich. The barman looks at him and says, "Hang on! You're a duck!"
"I see your eyes are working," replies the duck. "And you can talk!" exclaims the barman. "I see your ears are working, too," says the duck. "Now if you don't mind, can I have my beer and my sandwich please?" "Certainly, sorry about that," says the barman as he pulls the duck's pint. "It's just we don't get many ducks in this pub. What are you doing round this way?"
"Sounds marvelous," says the ringmaster, handing over his business card. "Get him to give me a call." So the next day when the duck comes into the pub the barman says, "Hey Mr. Duck, I reckon I can line you up with a top job, paying really good money." "I'm always looking for the next job," says the duck. "Where is it?" "At the circus," says the barman. "The circus?" repeats the duck.
"I'm working on the building site across the road," explains the duck. "I'm a plasterer."
"That's right," replies the barman.
The flabbergasted barman cannot believe the duck and wants to learn more, but takes the hint when the duck pulls out a newspaper from his bag and proceeds to read it.
"Yeah," the barman replies.
So, the duck reads his paper, drinks his beer, eats his sandwich, bids the barman good day and leaves. The same thing happens every day for two weeks. Then one day the circus comes to town.

VALE CONNECTION LADIES CHORUS
The ringmaster comes into the pub for a pint and the barman says to him "You're with the circus, aren't you? Well, I know this duck that would be just brilliant in your circus. He talks, drinks beer, eats sandwiches, reads the newspaper and everything!"
"The circus?" The duck asks again, "With the big tent?" "With all the animals who live in cages, and performers who live in caravans?" says the duck. "Of course," the barman replies. "And the tent has canvas sides and a big canvas roof with a hole in the middle?" persists the duck. "That's right!" says the barman. The duck shakes his head in amazement, and says . . . . "What the *%&$ would they want with a plasterer??!"
Vale Connection Ladies Chorus, based in Evesham, is celebrating a new, exciting musical director. Amanda Ballard, award winning opera singer has taken over the directorship of the chorus. The chorus has a recruitment drive and we meet every Thursday evening - all ladies are welcome to come along any time. We are really looking forward to the future of the chorus and expect to continue to fund-raise as before, raising tens of thousands of pounds for good causes. We are also looking for an Honourary President after the sad death of our last, Sir Norman Wisdom.
