Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Shorter days, colder nights; there's no getting away from it autumn is here again. And with it comes all the fun and festivities of Halloween, Bonfire Night and then Christmas. So don't forget to check the Events page to find out what's happening near you. With the colder weather approaching, Amy Marshall at ALM Fitness has some good advice about how to keep fit through the winter. Or you can follow Gary Lloyd's example and walk the Wychavon Way. If exercise is not your thing, you may want to visit Karla Ryland at the Golden Hands Clinic to find out how she can help you get into shape for Christmas. And of course next month is the December edition with all the focus well and truly on Christmas. We still have some advertising space available; alternatively if you have a flyer you'd like distributed, give me a call to discuss where and how many you'd like delivered.

Bishampton War Memorial written by Mike Rickard Bishampton History Society
D
espite very gloomy weather, members of the History Society, The Parish Council, the Pershore Branch of the British Legion, and relatives and friends of those whose names feature on the newly restored war memorial, gathered together on Sunday 13th October to hear the Bishop of Worcester, Dr. John Inge, perform the service of rededication. The event took place after many months of careful planning and was a good example of the community coming together for a common purpose. The service took the form of two aspects – the first one at St James’ Church, where the Bishop gave his address in his reminding the congregation that men of that generation were taught that the purpose of their lives was to provide service to others. He suggested that in this materialistic society we had a lot to learn from them, as only through service could we feel our lives were truly fulfilled. The second took place at the Memorial itself where the ceremony was to re-dedicate a memorial erected to honour the dead of the ‘Great War’. The sombre nature of the weather was perhaps a poignant reminder to everyone there to remember the awful, wet mud-filled trenches and battlefield conditions in which so many lost their lives. The traditional service at the Memorial which followed the original in 1931, was particularly moving and the Society would like to thank the Pershore British Legion for attending with their standard and such an accomplished bugler for her performance of The Last Post and Reveille. Thanks also to all those at the church and memorial who, spoke, read, sang, greeted and ushered, and to all those, including descendants of those listed, who braved the elements to make it such a memorable day. I must give particular credit
to the Parish Council who were so supportive and joined with us in this hugely worthwhile mission. It is a tribute not only to the men who gave their lives but also to the late Peter Averis for whom the memorial was so dear, and whose book Bishampton Remembered enabled the villagers who bought it to contribute to the renovation. In his address at the first dedication in 1931, General Sir Francis Davis asked the villagers paying tribute to pass on to their children the message of what the memorial stood for ‘so that, if a stranger came to the village a hundred years hence and asked what the memorial was, his question would be answered.’ I hope villagers will feel that we have accomplished that directive. You may be starting to think of Christmas shopping so don't forget the Bishampton 2014 calendar showing some pretty properties in the village. There's also the Heritage Trail Map with some fascinating facts about the older properties in the village, and based on Carolyn Morris’s illustrated map as can be seen in the Bishampton telephone box. Priced at £5 and £1 respectively, both are available from The Village Shop or from Mike Rickard at Mike.Rickard@sky.com, and would make ideal stocking fillers! For further information: Mike.Rickard@sky.com or Lesley Miller at lesleymiller3451@gmail.com www.bishampton.org.uk

Farne Island written & photographed by Pamela Green
T
he Farne Islands are off the coast of northeast England and can be reached from Seahouses Harbour, in Northumberland. They are one of the major breeding sanctuaries for migratory birds. To me the best time to visit is springtime as this is when the Farne Islands become home and breeding ground to 120,000 pairs of breeding birds, half of which are Puffins, (locally named Noddy). These beautiful birds with their colourful beaks are a fantastic sight to see. During the nesting season there are twenty different species of breeding sea birds, including Guillemots, Razorbills, Eiderducks, Terns and seventy thousand Puffins.
12
This year the breeding birds didn’t leave until August giving visitors some breathtaking sights. During the breeding season landings on the islands are restricted. There are special afternoon bird sanctuary trips that do land on the largest island, Inner Farne. As well as being the most famous Sea Bird Sanctuary in the British Isles, the island also boasts the largest colony of Atlantic or Grey Seals. Between three and seven thousands seals can be seen quite easily basking on the rocks at low tide. Thousands of seal pups are born each autumn, and they show no sign of depletion. The seals have no fear and swim quite close to tourist boats and what a magnificent sight the visitors have when the seal pups are born.
The Islands are also famous for the Longstone Lighthouse, which stands on the outer group of Farne Islands. Longstone is not a bird sanctuary and it can be visited. It was made famous in 1838, when 26-yearold Grace Darling, and her father, risked their lives to rescue nine survivors from the Forfarshire, paddle steamer, which ran aground on the rocks of Big Harcar. Grace sadly died just four years later of tuberculosis, but her fame remains. This is the only lighthouse that is open to the public and you can take an exclusive tour. Longstone Lighthouse was manned for 164 years before automation was introduced in 1990. The Farne Islands are such an interesting and spectacular place to visit. It is an ideal trip for the whole family and a paradise for naturalists and photographers especially during the breeding season. The islands are full of so much rich history and nature, and I can’t wait for next spring to visit again and experience such magnificent sights.

o matter how well we think we know our local area, a fresh perspective is always given when we exchange wheels for feet and roads for footpaths. Such a journey by foot, sometimes known as a walk, gives ample time to savour fabulous scenery and peaceful solitude. And what better walk than some or all of the Wychavon Way, a 40-mile route meandering from Droitwich to Broadway, taking in Flyford Flavell, the Lenches, Fladbury, Pershore and Ashton under Hill along the way. The Wychavon Way was originally devised by John Wren and opened in 1977 to commemorate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, and was rebooted in 2012 as a result of a partnership between Wychavon District Council and Worcestershire County Council to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. This Wychavon Way is a new and improved version of its original self, and follows a substantially different route. Out went the old yellow three-pointed crow waymarkers, to be replaced by a funky green-and-blue design that symbolizes two key features of the trail – Bredon Hill and the River Avon.
The Way To Go commencing my walk. My second attempt, setting off from the more logical – and stunning - starting point of Vines Park in Droitwich, was far more successful. The route took me along the Droitwich Canal, over countless stiles and footbridges, through meadows and orchards, and past quintessential villages and fishing lakes. The views were always pleasing upon the eye, and none more so than those from any of the eight crafted benches that have recently been added, courtesy of the Severn Waste Environmental Fund. This is not because the oak benches have been expertly located - although they have - but because all views are infinitely better from the vantage point of a bench after you have been yomping round the countryside for a few hours. It isn’t possible, of course, to complete the Wychavon Way in a single day, not unless you are a particularly enthusiastic SAS recruit. Most walkers of modest ability would be able to comfortably complete the route within three or four days, but it can be tackled in smaller chunks if desired. And because we live locally, they needn’t be consecutive days. Anyone who completes the Wychavon Way is rewarded with a pin badge to acknowledge their achievement, a pleasing reminder of riverside pastures, timber-framed houses and kissing gates. And the pin badge is even awarded to those who take an unplanned detour towards Stow-on-the-Wold.
Although it is waymarked in both directions, the accompanying Walkers’ Guide – laminated to offer protection from the elements – gives directions as if the walker is travelling southwards. While in theory it should be relatively straightforward to follow the directions in reverse, to many, myself included, that’s as uncomplicated as following a recipe in reverse. My first attempt to complete the Wychavon Way started from Broadway, in other words I was going against the grain, and finished several hours later when I came across a road sign for Stow-on-the-Wold. I had somehow written & photographed by Gary Lloyd got spectacularly lost within a few miles of 14 To advertise call 0845 224 7061 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

Severn Valley Railway 1940's Weekends article & photography by Brian Joyce
H
ot and steamy; that was the engine compartment of the Severn Valley train that took me north on the Severn Valley Railway during their 1940's event. The line runs north from Kidderminster to Bridgenorth along the banks of the River Severn – a picturesque trip, especially on such a beautiful summer's day. During consecutive weekends at the end of June to beginning of July, things 1940's could be found on the trains, in and around the station areas and on the platforms, including re-creations of homes, shops and even an air raid shelter complete with warden. Attractions included a 1940's wedding at Arley Station, the bride wearing a genuine 1940's dress and the groom looking dapper in his RAF uniform. Apart from the views from the train and the nostalgic, if somewhat pungent aroma of smoke from the engine, there were many period costumes to be seen with many of the visitors getting into 1940's mode. Highley proved to be the place for the action as ‘guys’ from the 101st Airborne impressively took back the station from ‘The Germans’, in a battle reenactment.
Deafeningly realistic with their period weapons and ‘live’ ammunition, participants of this wartime action showed great enthusiasm for their roles and the battle;
one casualty lay unmoving in the hot, early afternoon sun for so long we all thought he really had died! If steam engines are your passion then visit the Engine House at Highley - well worth the visit. Time it right and you could watch a short exerpt from ‘Brief Encounter’ or perhaps try your hand at 'mail on-the-fly' sorting in the Royal Mail carriage. Loved the 1940's hair fashion, the bright red lipstick - one RAF Officer sported a smacker on his cheek all day long - pencil skirts and those hats ... ! Everywhere you looked - and I had to for this article - the stockings had seams - no apologies for noticing this, readers. We loved it, especially the soporific sound of smoke from the engine as the carriages went ‘clickety clack’ over the points - a real treat - although you’d have to be as old as me to remember when steam trains used the mainlines, and to be so nostalgic. In those days folks, believe it or not, all trains ran on time … one re-enactment detail that doesn’t fit with real life today! A great day out; some excellent entertainment and plenty of nostalgia. Well done Severn Valley Railway, and thank you.

Surprise Visitor Proves Life can begin at Sixty! It isn’t every day that a restaurant critic turns up and congratulates you on serving up “one of the best meals I’ve had in Worcestershire for a long time”. It certainly took Chris and Jean Filus by surprise. Although they knew their food was something special, this, and the reviews that The Masons Arms has received on Trip Advisor, confirmed that all their hard work over the past six months has been worthwhile. But then Chris and Jean aren’t your typical publicans: running a pub and restaurant in the tiny village of Wadborough near Pershore has become more of a passion and lifestyle choice than a business venture. At an age when other couples would have been thinking of retiring Jean and Chris have become hands-on publicans, pulling pints (the Doombar is brilliant!), creating home-cooked meals and having the time of their lives meeting and greeting regulars and newcomers alike as old friends.
The Masons Arms 01905 841703
Jean and Chris are now looking forward to Christmas with a special festive menu running throughout December. They also have theme nights, pub quizzes and live music planned and will be posting details of all events and menus online at www.themasonsarmswadborough.co.uk. In the meantime why not book in for a meal and find out how good the food is for yourself - don’t just take a restaurant critic’s word for it! To make a booking please ring Jean or Chris on

And now for something completely different .....
E
very Picture tells a Story. No, I have not become a music critic. This is the name of the Bromeliad and Tropical Plant company owned by award winning specialist Don Billington, who puts on the most amazing exhibits of these exuberant tropical plants at RHS shows. Within hours of arriving at the floral marquee, Don recreates a replica, miniature rain forest, complete with dark mysterious pools, petrified timbers dripping with 'Spanish moss’ Tillandsia usneoides and a myriad of striking epiphytes, each one a work of art in its own right. Needless to say, he is always awarded a gold medal! The bromeliads (Bromeliaeceae) are a fascinating family. All 3,170 species are native to the tropical/sub-tropical Americas, except for one species Pitcairnia feliciana, found on the west African coast (rumoured to have been exported on a birds foot!). Size ranges from the tiny epiphytic ‘Spanish moss’ to the terrestrial forms such as the edible pineapple (Ananas comosus) and up to the largest species Puya raimondii reaching a statuesque 10m tall, when in full flower!
24
Terrestrial forms have roots more or less as we know them, anchoring the plant in the soil; whereas the epiphytes usually attach themselves to rocks and tree branches via wire-like roots, harvesting all the nutrients and moisture they require from the humid forest air. In Bolivia, the latter can be seen as silver clouds festooning the telephone lines. The foliage of this plant group is striking in every case. Usually in rosettes, they can be spear-like needles or broad and fleshy, sharp or soft, smooth or curly whirly and in the most exotic range of patterns and colours of any plant on the planet. Leaves can be any shade of green, silvery, rose pink, maroon/burgundy, golden; with or without cream, white, yellow or red variegation, banded, striped or spotty. However, the flowers are not to be outdone by the jazzy foliage. Large flattened ‘spear-shaped’ bracts of full-on hot pink with violet-purple flowers along its edge (Tillandsia ‘Goliath’) or Guzmania ‘Libby’ with tequila sunrise goblets, the bracts begin with scarlet rising through orange

to sunshine yellow, whilst other flowers resemble mini exploding fireworks of gold and scarlet (Guzmania dissitiflora). So how do you grow these wonderful plants in your not so tropical home? Don suggests you start with a couple of easy species such as Tillandsia mora and Guzmania ‘Teresa’. Display three or five plants, in a simple setting, by securing them to a piece of drift wood with plastic electrical cable ties. The base of the plant needs to be in contact with the wood, where it will form ‘rooty attachments’. Don advises against using glue as this inhibits ‘rooting’ and florist wire corrodes over time and becomes toxic to your air-plants. Finish your setting off by artfully concealing the join between plant and wood with a little sphagnum moss held in place with the aid of fishing line. The moss is aesthetically pleasing and also holds moisture around the plants. Alternatively you could secure a Neoregelia paucifolia on to a piece of wall mounted cork and drape the join with some Spanish moss. Position your new living works of art somewhere dappled, out of strong sunlight and frost free, such as a bathroom or frost-free conserva tory. Keep a little brass mister close by and spray once a week and that’s all they need. Definitely my kind of houseplant! You can even place them under a tree, in the garden, over summer. Furthermore, these little driftwood-airplant settings make great table decorations for Christmas dinner or a summer barbecue, instead of the usual flowers. Finally, I asked Don about his company name ‘Every Picture tells a Story’. He is a huge Rod
Stewart fan and this album was enormously successful for the singer. Don hoped a little of that success would rub off on him, when he started his bromeliad business and he was right. Long may it continue! To purchase air-plants and bromeliads, visit www.every-picture.com. Don holds the national collection of Aechmea, Billbergia and Neoregelia and a permanent display of his plants can be seen at Lydiate Barn Nurseries, Southport Road L31 4EE

Perfect Glazed Ham Posh Ham & Cheese Omelette
A ham is a delicious addition to anyone's Christmas menu, and glazing it so its bursting with flavour sounds more complicated than it is. For best results, soak the ham overnight in preparation.
A quick and easy recipe that's ideal to give a different twist to breakfast or enjoy as a special brunch.
Serves 10
Serves 4

Ingredients
3kg unsmoked gammon joint, soaked overnight 5 tbsp English mustard 5 tbsp maple syrup 2 tbsp soft brown sugar handful of dried cloves

• Preheat the oven to 170C/Gas Mark 3. • Remove the ham from its soaking bowl and pat gently to dry with kitchen roll or a clean tea-towel. • Place the ham in a roasting tin, and, using a sharp knife, score the top in a criss-cross pattern. Press the cloves stem-first into the skin at evenly-spaced intervals. • Mix together the mustard, maple syrup and sugar in a bowl. 5. If you have a cold: colds are more common in winter, but you don’t necessarily have to stop exercising if you’re feeling under the weather. Use common sense and listen to your body. If you generally feel okay then you can exercise, but if you feel absolutely rotten it’s best not to, and do not exercise with a fever. Also wash your hands often, washing your hands more often could be the difference between getting sick and staying well this winter. Don’t be afraid to venture out into the cold, wintery weather. You may just find that a walk or run in the falling snow is peaceful and rewarding. Just take the appropriate precautions to keep safe and warm. Most of all, keep moving! ALM Fitness offers a variety of different classes that will keep you fit, healthy and motivated this winter. For more information about any of these or any other services ALM Fitness has to offer, visit www.almfitness. co.uk or call Amy Marshall 077403 66419 or email info@almfitness.co.uk

Grandma Singletons by Andrew Brooks
G
r a n d m a Singletons Strong Traditional Lancashire is named after the founder of Singleton’s Dairy.
And the problem is ... ? A wife asks her husband, "Could you please go shopping for me and buy a carton of milk, and if they have avocados, get six." A short time later the husband comes back with six cartons of milk. The wife asks him, "Why did you buy six cartons of milk?" He replies, "They had avocados." If you're a woman, you'll need to read this again ... men will get it the first time! My work here is done.
G r a n d m a Singletons is the strongest Traditional Lancashire available and is aged for a minimum of ten months. It is semi-soft in consistency and slightly crumbly, with a rich yellow colour and strong, tangy flavour. A favourite for lovers of strong cheese, made from pasteurised cows milk with vegetarian rennet. This cheese will brighten up any cheeseboard with its lovely red wax coat.

or a long as I can remember, British tradesmen have been vilified as lazy, unreliable and sloppy workers. Everyone has a story about an occasion when they’ve called in a plumber or electrician and waited days for said individual to appear, whilst having to contend with no heating or leaking taps or a blocked loo. As a relative new-comer to England (having only been here twelve years) with a husband who is a DIY whiz and can turn his hand to most things, I’ve rarely had to rely on outside help. However, in the last eight or nine months, I’ve had to call in the “professionals” four times, and in the process have made an interesting discovery! Far from being unreliable, the people who’ve come to my rescue have been superfast to answer my calls for help, dealt with the problem efficiently and professionally, then gone on their way leaving me with a bill so small I was – to use the vernacular – gobsmacked! Three of these heroes are advertisers in The Villager, but in deference to those advertisers who services I have yet to use, I won’t name them. Suffice to say that if anyone wants to call me for a reference, I will be only too happy to give it.
Observations by the editor
to get three conscientious people first time, every time? Well, the fourth and latest incident confirmed my suspicions. After putting it off for months, we finally decided to replace our boiler. A large and reputable Worcester based company were approached and arrangements were made; a date was booked for the installation … and of course shortly before, the soon-to-be-replaced boiler … died! We had two choices: live without a boiler and no hot water for a month, or get it fixed. So naturally we phoned the company who were replacing the boiler, and they said: we’ll send someone out next week to give you an estimate! My response, to put it mildly, was unprintable! Again, two choices: live without hot water for a week, or find someone else to fix the blasted thing! As all of the heating engineers in The Villager are over 20 miles from where we live, we tried the local parish magazine. And again, we got lucky first time. The engineer arrived an hour later, worked for a couple of hours, then left having fixed the boiler – and serviced it – for the ridiculous sum of £60!
These first three occasions So finally, the penny has set me thinking: surely it can’t dropped. Maybe I’m just a be just luck that I happened bit slow on the uptake, but Please mention THE VILLAGER when responding to advertisers
it seems to me that far from being lazy and unreliable, British tradesmen are hardworking, efficient and extremely knowledgeable – the problem lies with the big companies and corporations they work for! And sadly, this seems to be the trend generally in the UK – and possibly worldwide – in most things. Gas and electricity giants who care nothing for their customers; supermarkets and banks to whom their customers are just numbers and whose unspoken attitude is “if you don’t like it, go elsewhere – there’s plenty more where you came from”. During the current recession, we've all suffered in one way or another, but, as the saying goes, "every cloud ..." and one good thing has come out of it: of necessity more and more people have become self-employed, which means we now have an army of small businesses run by people who understand good service and the need to treat their customers with courtesy and respect. And if we, the generally public, support these businesses then perhaps we’ll go back to a time when service was paramount and the customer will again. always be right. 43
