Upton Blues Festival Article & Photography by Brian Joyce

M

eaty, beaty, big and bouncy, smokin, sassy and rockin - all descriptors applied to an amazing blend of bluegrass, classic and Mississippi Delta Blues heard throughout the riverside town of Upton-upon-Severn in the . . . wait for it . . . yes, the weekend sunshine. Whether performing on the Riverside stage as did Motives + Matt Taylor, 24 Pesos, Mojo Hooker and more or on the Sports Field Stage like LR Phoenix and Mumbo-Jumbo & friends, or perhaps playing in the Acoustic venue behind the Plough like Hollow Belly, Willie & the Bandits and Dave Bristow or even playing out in front of The Plough Inn like Nice & Sleazy, Rickshaw Brides and Slide Boy Roy or then again in the Swan Hotel venue like Jack the Biscuit, Slowburner and Chicago Bytes, everywhere you turned could be heard a superb outpouring of emotion through music. Stompin, boppin, dancing and other adjectives to describe crowd reaction to their favourites, apart from yours truly desperately trying to capture images of the bands and yet still keep those feet still!

8

2012

Once again, running between venues trying listen to them all was never going to work with 9 different venues and 96 performances over 3 days, including a floating

venue, but those, once heard, are well remembered and were most certainly enjoyed. Highlights for the author, if he had to identify some would be the performance of Mojo Hooker with the fabulous voice of Camilla Blakemore and the sensational guitar playing of Tony ‘T-Bone’ Haran with a tie for joint second between Slowburner (Paul Bridgewater vocals & Mike Bannister on guitar) and LR Phoenix. That voice – LR Phoenix – like nothing the author has heard before plus steel slide guitar with a penknife!!! Unique just doesn’t cover it.

Crowds packed around the Riverside Stage on Saturday night to hear 24 Pesos belt out some quality stuff as they crammed shoulder to shoulder into The Muggery earlier in the day to listen to Nothin Personal. Hands clappin and feet stompin, blues galore, music in abundance, happy campers and yet another successful Festival – another Gold Star for Upton and long may they continue to host these Festivals. Going back for more next year ? Mais oui! To advertise call 0845 224 7061 or 07754 170286 or visit www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

t was the turn of Pershore to hold their first ever River Festival and although the weather again took its toll in the Vale, unlike the Evesham Festival, this one went ahead. Sadly only the Life Saving & Rescue Crews were allowed out on the water on Saturday as a result of the Red Warning (RED Danger - stop and moor your boat) from the Avon Navigation Authority. Not the first time that rising water levels in the local Rivers have caused havoc in the Vale of Evesham! Mayor of Pershore, Charles Tucker opened the event on a soggy King Georges Field and ended his address with a plea for all to visit the stand and support his adopted, local charity: The Acquired Brain Injury Centre, Evesham. Dutch Lewis then kicked things off with a little clarinet music.

12

Yours truly didn’t get to experience the Dragon Boat racing as the river flow was too fast. There were no evening fireworks and no illuminated River Parade. Adrian Mayhew, former Fireman and GB Triathlete and now Vice Chairman of the South Worcestershire Life Saving Club gave some excellent demonstrations of water-based rescues with his Team using their Zodiac boats and Hansa Board recovery system. Poor Traffic Policewoman, Abbie Jones frequently drew the short straw, acting as both victim and Lady Carolyn Harford & Lesley Kewley rescuer throughout and so braved the fast Trustees for The Mayor's local charity flowing and muddy waters of Acquired Brain Injury Centre in Evesham the River Avon. Later as the sun peeked out from behind the clouds, the residents and visitors to Pershore braved the elements to attend and support the event. The Arden Sailing club took to the river on Sunday when conditions had improved and were then joined by the model boat club. Music at both Wyre Mill and in the Angel Hotel were attractive prospects when faced with blustery conditions outside. Festival organiser, Richard Grantham, pleased with the turnout and the responses from stall holders and participants alike, stated that this will provide a good foundation for next year. At least four local residents enjoyed the conditions more than most . . . ! September in the Garden Flower Garden

Greenhouse

Now is the time to start planting spring bulbs for next year: daffodils, hyacinths, lilies and small bulbs are best planted this month or in early October, whilst its best to plant tulips towards the end of October

Houseplants and catci that have been outside during the summer should now be brought indoors.

Give evergreen hedges a final trim to ensure they are neat for the winter Collect seeds from perennials and annuals, put them in paper bags and leave somewhere warm place to dry for a few days. Then clean and store in small envelopes.

Roses At this time of the year, shrub roses and ramblers can be propagated from cuttings. Cut a piece of stem about 30cm long, trim it off just below the bottom leaf and remove the soft tip just above a root joint. Remove all the leaves except for the top two or three. Push the cuttings about 15cm into a well dug trench in the garden, and leave for at least 12 months to root. Climbing roses and ramblers that have got a bit out of hand should now be tied in.

Lawn Whilst the earth is still warm, this is a good time to prepare the ground for sowing a new lawn. Existing lawns should be aerated using a garden fork, then fed with lawn food to keep them nourish throughout the winter. Re-seed any bare patches.

Herb Garden Parsley can be sown now for an early spring crop. Dead-head and trim back perennials, and discard annuals and generally tidy up your herb garden.

14

If you have indoor cyclamen plants kept from last winter, now is the time to start watering them. Stand them a shallow tray and water from the bottom, allowing them to drain thoroughly.

Containers Plant two layers of daffodil bulbs in containers, one slightly staggered above the other. This will ensure that you get a really good display. Plant the bulbs deeply enough to allow you to plant winter and spring bedding, such as winter pansies, primroses, violas and wallflowers on top of the daffodils.

Vegetable Garden Harvest sweetcorn when the silks have turned from golden to brown. When ripe, onions should be lifted and laid out to dry before storing Continue to harvest runner beans and courgettes; don't leave it too long to pick French and runner otherwise they will be stringy and tough.

Fruit Garden Use netting to protect blackberries and raspberries, but make sure you check daily that no animals or birds are caught in the net. Early varieties of apples should be picked and eaten as soon as they are ripe, as they won't keep.

Maintaining Your Fields The Easy Way If you’re fortunate to own or rent land you’ll also understand how difficult maintenance can be at times. It’s often the case that the weather dictates when work can be done or whether the farmer is available when you need it. And yes it can be costly. Well, help is at hand from a new local company, JM Paddock & Field Maintenance. Run by Jordan Massey, who holds a Diploma in Farm Mechanisation from the distinguished Hartpury College (partner with the University of West England) his company offers a high quality and professional service to suit all your requirements, from one off jobs to monthly contracts. Using Agricultural ATVs and the most advanced Logic implements, Jordan provides what he describes as “compact farming at its best”. “By using quad bikes, small access to land doesn’t pose a problem and as no marks are left, the ground is undamaged and therefore can be worked in all weathers,” says Jordan. “And as the machinery used is also compact, the costs are kept low so general land, pony paddock and ménage maintenance, becomes very affordable.” JM Paddock & Field Maintenance covers the Four Counties (Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire and Shropshire) area and provide an initial free no obligation quote. So if you’d like to know more about how to manage your land the easy way, you can contact Jordan on 01386 791572 (Mobile 07833 944166).

Water

Following last month’s feature, I have been asked why it was that Pershore was so late in being given piped water, which could have been due to the fact that for many years the town was divided into two parish councils. The two councils, Holy Cross and St. Andrews, continued to do business separately until they amalgamated in 1949. There are numerous instances when these two authorities were unable to agree on projects that consequently were shelved. For example, in 1909 it was proposed to erect a Town Hall at the end of Broad Street, at an estimated cost of £3000, but the two parishes were even unable to agress as to whether it be known as a town hall or a market hall! Pershore was far from unique in being unable to provide enough water or adequate sewage for its inhabitants; small parish organizations had for years been unable to cope with these problems, but in 1888 a Local Government Act made the County Council responsible for these. In 1893 the County Medical Officer reported that domestic water supplies in Pershore came from many shallow wells, only twelve to eighteen feet deep sunk in the subsoil on private premises or from open draw wells, many of which were less than 20 feet from privy middens. He also reported that ‘7 householders had no drinking water on their premises and 90 had only scanty supplies’. The sewage system consisted of pipes which in some places were formed of agricultural drain tiles connected to brick culverts that discharged into the Avon. In 1902 42 out 47 wells sampled were found to be unfit for domestic use. In Plough Lane (Priest Lane) nearly all wells failed due to the hot dry summer, and some houses in High Street, Bridge St and Nash’s Yard had no water at all. In Church Street only the White 18

Pershore Utilitie Horse had water and was selling it at 1d a week per house! With the failure of the wells, and water of the Avon contaminated with sewage and animal pollution, most people continued the old tradition of drinking ale; even the children drank small beer. On 1st April of that year Mr Wilcox, the Engineer, wrote to Mr Hill (Lord Coventry’s agent) asking permission to sink trial holes in a field on Hungerhill farm (The Vineyards).

View of the bottom end of Bridge 'Street with one o used to bring drinking water to local hom

Mr Hill replied that having considered the application he could not advise Lord Coventry to grant permission. Other plans considered for improving the water supply were pumping it from the Avon or piping it from springs at Elmley Castle or Kemerton. These came to nothing although the Parochial Committee was of the opinion that ‘if a good system of drainage were adopted so as to prevent sewerage matter finding its way into the gravel strata, underlying the greater portion

Article by Marion Freeman

of the town, the water in the wells would be suitable for domestic use.’ Due to the difficulties with drinking water, by the beginning of the 20th century, bowsers were regularly being brought into the town to supply homes with safe drinking water. It wasn’t until 1931 that a water supply was obtained by taking water from springs at Overbury to a reservoir on Allesborough Hill, and when houses on the Abbey Estate were built following WWII these were connected to a sewage treatment works in Defford Road.

Sewerage

In 1961 a comprehensive sewerage scheme for the whole town was undertaken at a cost of an estimated £408,000. It took two years to build and was inaugurated by Lord Balniel, MP and president of the Rural District Councils Association. The new works at Tiddesley of the bowsers Woods provided for the main mes sewerage of Pershore town and the outlying villages of Pinvin, Wyre, Wick and Pensham.

Gas

Although gas mains were laid in Pershore High Street in the 1890’s this was well after the formation of the Pershore & District Gas Company, and did not arrive without a great deal of controversy. Chief amongst those opposed to the new fangled street lighting was the incumbent vicar. A local printer, William Conn, in August 1852 published

a poem castigating the local parson for his opposition to the scheme and following this, in October he published another supporting the ‘promoters of the Pershore Gas Company’. Thanks largely to local solicitor, Mr. Edwin Ball, gas street lighting arrived in Pershore in October 1853 when it was greeted with ‘great jollification’. The Berrows Journal for that year reported that ‘More than 70 gentry and tradesmen dined together at the Bell Inn, High Street under the presidency of John Yeend Bedford'. By the early 1890’s the Pershore Gas Company had been formed, with Mr Edward Humphries, whose firm made much of the street furniture, being one of the partners. By 1933 the company was known as the Pershore & District Gas & Lighting Company, under its chairman Mr E G Grizzell, with a registered office at Glengarth, Station Road. The Company went into liquidation in 1934 when it was taken over by the Cheltenham & District Gas Co., and was nationalised in 1947, the huge gas holders (in Cherry Orchard) that over-shadowed the town being dismantled in 1986.

Electricity

The laying of cables for electric light commenced on 4th July 1927, when seventy consumers in Pershore received their first electricity and on 19th February the following year Pershore Abbey had electric light installed for just over £100. However it was May 1932 before a meeting of Pershore Lighting and Watching Acts Joint Committee appointed a committee to discuss lighting the streets by electricity. This eventually superseded the gas lighting and put an end to the job of the lamplighter. John Smith’s father, who later became a pipe-fitter and gas fitter, was the last to serve the town in this capacity.

Five Most Intelligent Ways to Lose Weight . . . Last month I listed the five most stupid ways to lose weight; now here are the five most intelligent ways, so pay attention if losing a bit of lard is your goal! Give yourself a deadline and tell people about it Those who get in shape quick usually have a deadline. For example, the bride to be will kick ass when it comes to getting herself in shape for the big day. Why? Well, (a) because she wants to look amazing on her day, of course, but also (b) because there's just the teensiest little bit of pressure. She's got a deadline that most certainly isn't going to budge and everyone else knows the deadline! This focuses her mind and nothing will get in her way, nothing! So, what deadlines and pressure can you put on yourself? Maybe a holiday, a school reunion, a BIG birthday party? Once you decide, let your close friends and family know and tell them to poke you in the eye if you step out of line. Eat real food There are far too many 'humpty dumpty' diets around. I'm tired of reading about them. The real answer to your munchy 22

problems is simple: just cut out the junk and eat REAL food! No more fizzy drinks, sweets, chocolate, crisps, microwave food, etc. Instead, eat lean meats, fish, fruit and veg and drink plenty of water. It's not rocket science! Cut out the junk until you hit your deadline and I guarantee you look and feel a lot better. Once you've got there then give yourself a LITTLE reward (I'm not talking a binge, by the way!). Exercise the right way Slow boring cardio isn't going to cut the mustard if you want to get in shape fast and neither will yoga, pilates, Wii Fit, or Zumba. Why? Because they're not intense enough to fire up your metabolism 24/7. They all have their benefits, but if you want results QUICK you need to push yourself so that your lungs are on fire (not literally) and you're out of your comfort zone. My personal training clients, boot camp members know the difference and that's why they get great results. Next time

you exercise ask yourself this: "On a scale of 1-10 how hard am I working?" If the answer is below 7 you need to step it up. Resistance training Do some resistance training to improve muscle tone AND help you burn more calories (and extra fat) for hours afterwards. It doesn't matter if you lift weights or do body weight exercises, both will help to speed up a sluggish metabolism. You can also combine resistance training with cardio for amazing results. If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail It's an old adage, but it's spot on. So, what days are you exercising this week? Do you even know? What exercises are you going to do? If you don't just because you don't see results after a day or even a have a clue, spend 10 week, don't give up. you may not see changes, but every smart minutes at choice you make is affecting you in ways you'd never imagine. lunch today fitspirationforlife.tumblr.com writing in your diary the days that you're going to exercise and what type of workout you're going to do each day and do it for the next 28 days. This will massively increase your focus and productivity.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Community Transport schemes are a great way to keep rural communities alive and connected; they reduce social isolation by supporting people who are unable to use public transport and who have no access to their own or a family member’s car. Typical journeys include attendance at medical appointments, shopping, or visiting friends and relatives. The project enables people who would otherwise find it difficult to travel to maintain their independence at a reasonable cost. Volunteer drivers receive a generous mileage allowance.
