Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

t is said that moving house can be one of the most stressful events in life - and the keepers at West Midland Safari Park can certainly vouch for that. When 13 African Lions are involved, it's not every removal firm that would be willing to take on such an immense task, but for staff at the Park it is just part of their job.

The new lion house at West Midland Safari Park is now fully functional and whilst the relocation from old to new involved meticulous planning, the move went without a hitch and the pride have settled in well.
at West Midland Safari Park is undoubtedly the best lion house structure in Europe.
The ÂŁ500,000 state of the art accommodation marks the third and final stage of the Realm of the Lions exhibit, which was opened this year to celebrate the Parks' 40th anniversary. The first stage was the opening of a fully landscaped reserve, with carved rockwork, waterfall and pool; followed by an off-road track that runs parallel to the tarmac drive through.
The most innovative feature is the amount of glass that has been incorporated into the build. It is not the usual choice for a lion house and allows for perfect observation by staff. The contemporary construction sets this lion house apart from any other and the new facility
The Park's Creative Designer, David Powner, said, "Now that the lions have been successfully moved into their new accommodation, it marks the completion of this major three-phase project. It has been one of the largest developments that has been created in-house

The lions certainly appear to have settled in well and the staff love working in the area, too. The only thing that the staff are not so keen on is having to keep the glass clean, which they have found can only be achieved by plain, good old-fashioned elbow grease".

intern is a blended mature creamy Cheddar cheese flavoured with fresh chives and shallots, made by Abergavenny Fine Foods.

Typically produced in wheels of 2.25kg, it is sold in a distinctive lime green wax covering. It takes its name from the village of Tintern on the River Wye, in Monmouthshire, Wales. PUBLIC JOIN NIGHT PATROLS IN RESPONSE TO INHUMANE BADGER CULL Volunteers from both Gloucestershire and other areas of the country are coming forward to join Wounded Badger Patrols that will walk public footpaths during the cull to look for injured animals. The Patrols are being co-ordinated by local campaign group Gloucestershire Against Badger Shooting (GABS) and will cover most of the planned cull zone when shooting starts. One of the aims of the government’s pilot culls in Gloucestershire and Somerset is to see whether they are humane, as this has never been done before. Through a report released last month, DEFRA has said that it expects a number of animals to be wounded but not killed. The report sets out that shot, but conscious badgers will be left in order to allow the shooters to carry on killing other badgers. These animals are then expected to die from infection or starvation. Jeanne Berry, a spokesperson for GABS said “When we read the DEFRA report we knew many people could not just stand by and do nothing. We have had a good and heartwarming response from many people right across the country who are prepared to help us when the shooting starts. Badgers could still benefit from more local people joining the patrols. For more information call 01452 813168 or email wbpglos@ gmail.com to join one in their area.”
Wounded Badger Patrol
The Wounded Badger Patrols will involve people walking legally on public footpaths near to where shooting will have taken place and all volunteers must agree to acting peacefully and within the law.

Fitness doesn't have to be drudgery. These tips can help you add focus and fun to your routine.
I
t’s that time of year again: the kids are back at school, holidays are over and routine is restored in your daily life. Now you can focus once again on your fitness regime, as I know some of you may have slacked a little over the summer. You work hard to get that beach body, so why not stay motivated and keep it? Have you ever started a fitness program and then quit? If you answered yes, you're not alone. Many people start fitness programs but stop when they get bored or results come too slowly. Here are seven tips to help you stay motivated.
1) Set goals. Start with simple goals and then progress to long-range goals. Remember to make your goals realistic and achievable. It's easy to get frustrated and give up if your goals are too ambitious. 2) Make it fun. Find sports or activities that you enjoy, then vary the routine to keep you on your toes. If you're not enjoying your workouts, try something different. Join a local sports team, take a ballroom dancing class, grab a friend and have personal training sessions together. Discover your hidden athletic talent. Remember, exercise doesn't 18
have to be drudgery — and you're more likely to stick with a fitness program if you're having fun. 3) Make physical activity part of your daily routine. If it's hard to find time for exercise, don't fall back on excuses. Schedule workouts as you would any other important activity. You can also slip in physical activity throughout the day. Take the stairs instead of the lift. Walk up and down sidelines while watching the kids play sports. Pedal a stationary bike or do strength training exercises while you watch TV at night. 4) Put it on paper. Are you hoping to lose weight? Boost your energy? Sleep better? Manage a chronic condition? Write it down. Seeing the benefits of regular exercise on paper may help you stay motivated. You may also find it helps to keep an exercise diary. Record what you did during each exercise session, how long you exercised and how you felt afterwards. Recording your efforts can help you work towards your goal — and remind you that you're making progress. 5) Join forces with friends, neighbours or others. You're not in this alone. Invite friends

6) Reward yourself. After each exercise m: 07872 824482 or 07872 824481 session, take a few minutes to savour the good We are based in Worcestershire feelings that exercise gives you. This type of internal reward can help you make a longA+ PLUMBING QUARTER PAGE AD.indd 1 term commitment to regular exercise. External rewards can help too. When you reach a longrange goal, treat yourself to a new pair of walking shoes or new tunes to enjoy while you exercise. 7) Be flexible. If you're too busy to work out or simply don't feel up to it, take a day or two off. Be gentle with yourself if you need a break. The important thing is to get back on track as soon as you can. Now that you've regained your enthusiasm, get moving! Set your goals, make it fun and pat yourself on the back from time to time. Remember, physical activity is for life. An Encounter with Nature article & photography by Pamela Green
G
olitha Falls is a National Nature Reserve and a famous beauty spot on the southern edge of Bodmin Moor, Cornwall. It is a place of great importance for its lichens, liverwort and mosses. Over 50 species of liverwort and 98 species of moss grow here, some of which are quite rare. There are also sessile oak, mixed oak, ash and an avenue of very old beech trees. The woodland is in a steep-sided gorge, with the River Fowey flowing through in a series of spectacular cascades. As soon as we entered the Reserve we felt it was an enchanting place, as even the earth beneath our feet sparkled with tiny specks of tin and crystal. We have since found out that it was the site of an old tin mine. As the sun glistened magically through the trees my camera never stopped clicking as I captured the river swirling magnificently through the rocks. Our journey continued along the riverbank and this was quite hard work in places as we had to scramble over rocks to continue, but we didn’t mind, as the scenery was incredible. We arrived at a small beach where the river turned and we couldn’t follow. Our path then took us up the steep side of the gorge. This was made easy, with wooden steps embedded into the earth. 20
The view when we reached the top took our breath away. We had entered a magical copse carpeted in bluebells. After taking some fantastic photos we followed a trail through the bluebells but had to stop when a baby robin flew down ahead of us. He was right in front of me and even allowed me to take his photograph. I was so pleased and followed as he hopped off down the path. In a sunny clearing he stopped and faced me, as if inviting me to take his photo again. When I looked through my viewfinder I saw a small field mouse hiding in the leaves beside the robin. I quickly pressed the shutter. This is the kind of amazing shot you only experience once. What a day we had exploring this beautiful woodland and experiencing the most breathtaking sights. I feel our encounter with the robin and the mouse made our day and we saw nature at its most spectacular.

One-liners! Local Police are hunting for the 'Knitting Needle Nutter' who has stabbed six people in the bum in the last 48 hours. They believe the attacker could be following some kind of pattern. When I was in the pub I heard a couple of idiots saying that they wouldn't feel safe on an aircraft if they knew the pilot was a woman. What a pair of sexist pigs. I mean, it's not as if she'd have to reverse the bloody thing! A teddy bear is working on a building site. He goes for a tea break and when he returns he notices his pick has been stolen. The bear is angry and reports the theft to the foreman. The foreman grins at the bear and says "Oh, I forgot to tell you: today's the day the teddy bears have their pick nicked". The wife was counting all the 1p's and 2p's out on the kitchen table when she suddenly got very angry and started shouting and crying for no reason. I thought to myself "She's going through the change"

ontrolling weeds on your paddocks & fields can be a nightmare. Most of the time is spent pulling them, spraying them and often out of sheer desperation – cutting them down as you top the field! The best way to tackle weeds is with good paddock maintenance, however spraying them at the right time of the year goes a huge way to minimising their growth and proliferation.
what he describes as “compact farming at its best”.
As Autumn (October time) approaches consideration has to be given to spraying off some of the common weeds – Ragwort is a good example of this and it will help reduce plant numbers later in the year.
“Getting the right time of year for the right growth phase for weed control isn’t difficult. Just consult your regular agricultural contractor for advice, then act on it, that way your paddocks stand a good chance of almost being weed free – now wouldn’t that be nice?” says Jordan

Stars in my Eyes Pleione: a star of the Pleiades cluster, an Oceanid nymph of greek mythology and a Peacock orchid; all equally exotic and mysterious, but the ground orchid is at least the most tangible.
I
strolled across the marquee and was instantly smitten (just like a Mills and Boon novel only with plants). Jewel-like flowers, backlit by the setting sun, glowed in rich candy pinks, apricots and creams; each one with a delicate spotted throat. I have encountered Pleiones in the past, but the display by Ian Butterfield was truly a work of art, the deep green moss displayed their rich colours to perfection.
Apricot Pleione
Pleione Shantung Ducat
Pleiones are hardy orchids and Ian holds the national collection. He is not only an authority on the subject, g r o w i n g and selling Pleiones, but also a keen h y b r i d i s e r, responsible for breeding almost 60% of the varieties currently registered. There are 26 basic species; as ever, the botanists furiously d e b a t e whether there are more or less! Only one, Pleione ‘Sabatini’ is from a desert
island. The majority of these delicate looking blooms hail from mountains and foothills of the Himalayas, India, Burma, Thailand, Taiwan; all the way down through the Himalayan Chain to South West China. When plant hunting in Bhutan, Ian never saw them growing below 7000 ft. In their native habitat, Pleiones lie dormant, snug under the winter snow, when it is horribly cold and dry. They flower after the thaw in Spring festooning rocks and trees with their exotic blooms and then endure a horribly hot summer, wet with monsoon. In fact, in the wild, the climate is so harsh, these beauties don’t flower every year. However, these seemingly fragile plants are very robust, easy to grow and more than a worthy addition to any alpine collection. Their growing cycle fits well with our UK seasons as they are dormant over the winter and grow during Spring and Summer. Their compost requirements are very simple too. In the wild they live in mossy debris on fallen trees and logs, steep humus rich mountain slopes or even hanging by a thread in rocky crevices of a vertical cliff face. In an alpine collection, they thrive in shallow pots in a free draining compost mix of 4 parts medium grade bark and 1 part chopped moss. Everything about this plant is unusual. They have a large spongy almost spherical pseudobulb, which produces one or two leaves in the single year that it is active. Over winter, the dormant pseudo-bulbs are stored in barely-moist compost in a greenhouse or porch, just above freezing. The pseudo-bulbs do go to mush if frosted. Come February, with rising temperatures, the compost is slightly moistened to encourage new root growth. For most species, the main flush of extravagant,

glorious blooms is in Spring. As the flowers fade, the leaves begin to grow fast, which is a signal to begin liquid feeding, with balanced fertiliser such as Baby Bio up to July and then a high potash feed, like Tomorite, through August. The pots of Pleiones are very happy outside over the summer, ideally under the canopy of a shady tree, giving protection from the glaring sun. They also enjoy a good spray of mist. Other than that they are very easy going. Come September/October, watering ceases and Pleiones begin dormancy. By December they are resting and this is when they can be repotted, trimming dead roots back to about 1 cm and discarding old shrivelled pseudo-bulbs. The pseudo-bulb only lasts for 1 year and is replaced typically by two new flowering sized ones annually. There are hundreds of varieties available, so I asked Ian for his recommendations as a beginner. He suggested starting with Pleione Britannia ‘Doreen’ - she is very easy with a tough bombproof constitution and two big purply-pink flowers per stem.
Butterfield is a traditional nurseryman; he sells from his mail order catalogue and is not on line, but you can obtain a catalogue from: Ian Butterfield ‘Yaffles’, Harvest Hill, Bourne End, Bucks, SL8 5JJ

Who could resist? Two other good varieties to choose are P. Santorini ‘Yellow Wagtail’ -: cream petals and sepals flushed mauve with a pale yellow lip spotted with dark red. P. Berapi Purple Sandpiper - blooms for 6 weeks with dark vibrant purple flowers with dark red spots on the lips.
Pleione Santorini Yellow Wagtail
So why am I burbling enthusiastically about a spring flowering plant in the middle of September, you ask? I think they make a superb, inexpensive and unusual Christmas present for any keen gardener. The dormant pseudo-bulbs are dispatched during the winter and therefore, you need to place you order as soon as possible. O
ne of the adverse consequences of our recent heat wave has been the apparently higher than usual number of heat-related deaths, particularly drownings as hot and flustered people seek sanctuary in any body of water close to hand. This includes the two young men who tragically lost their lives in the space of one week in Gullet Quarry, near Malvern. But there are other dangers lurking below the surface that might make people think twice before cooling off in open water. One such condition is Weil’s Syndrome, of which there are around 20-30 cases each year in the UK. It doesn’t sound particularly threatening, but like all the best diseases it goes by a number of aliases that rather give the game away, such as Rat Catcher ’s Yellows, black jaundice and leptospirosis. Weil’s Syndrome is the name given to a severe manifestation of leptospirosis, and is transmitted when humans come into contact with water contaminated with urine from a variety of animals, especially rats. It is one of the most commonly transmitted
What Lies Beneath written by Gary Lloyd
diseases between animals and humans. Stagnant water is an ideal location to contract Weil’s Syndrome, such as gullies, ditches, muddy riverbanks and slow-moving stretches of rivers. This makes canoeists, rowers and kayakers, of which there are many in our area, particularly susceptible, even more so if they take to the water with unhealed cuts or without eye protection. Wartime trenches, incidentally, were also a rampant breeding ground for leptospirosis – countless cases were reported in the American Civil War, Gallipoli and various Western Front battlefields. Symptoms are wideranging and include aching muscles, throbbing headaches, nausea, eye inflammations, unsightly rashes and, most noticeably, acute fever as the infection spreads to various internal organs. In fact, with so many potential symptoms, sufferers have often been wrongly diagnosed with all manner of equally

unpleasant ailments such as typhoid, hepatitis and meningitis. Antibiotics do help, of course, but they are not guaranteed to work. Ultimately, death can result. The most high profile death in recent years was Andy Holmes, who rowed to gold alongside Steve Redgrave at Los Angeles and Seoul, only to die at the age of 51 after contracting Weil’s Syndrome following a 26mile sculling marathon in Lincolnshire. So the open water may look tempting and appealing, especially in the unseasonably hot weather that we have enjoyed at times this summer, but we should all think twice before cooling off in a river or pond. There are more dangers to face than drowning alone. And let’s not forget that there are splendid leisure facilities at Pershore and Evesham that offer a far less risky, yet equally refreshing, experience. 31

HELPFUL MOTHER-IN-LAW The mother-in-law arrives home from shopping to find her son-in-law boiling angry and packing his suitcase. "What's happened?" she asks anxiously. "What's happened!! I'll tell you what's happened! I e-mailed to my wife telling her I was coming home today from my fishing trip. I get home and guess what I found? Yes! Your daughter - my Jean - with another man in our marital bed! This is unforgivable, the end of our marriage. I'm done. I'm leaving forever!" "Calm down, calm down!" says his mother-in-law. "There is something very odd going on here. Jean would never do such a thing! There must be a simple explanation. I'll go speak to her immediately and find out what happened." Moments later, the mother-in-law comes back with a big smile. "I told you there must be a simple explanation: she didn't get your e-mail!"

Fladbury Festival & Walkabout 2013 article & photography by Brian Joyce
S
ummer announced itself with temperatures headed for the thirties, and this heatwave greeted the folks in the Vale of Evesham as they flocked to the Walkabout in Fladbury. There were gardens to admire, music including brass, jazz and classical, stalls to visit, antique motors to drool over, archery to try, wares to sample, boat trips to take or talented musician Ruth Minton, to listen to whilst playing Bach’s Bacarolle in concert. Weekend Walkabout has been going on since the 1970s and is a successful mechanism to raise funds for the local parish church of St John the Baptist. The stalwarts amongst the organising committee have raised money to benefit the bells in the c h u rc h , as well as clubs and organisations in the local area - U13 Football, tennis, the WI and Fladbury Brownies - to name but a few. Temperatures rising meant the ice cream man was clear favourite although refreshments 40
at the school also did a roaring trade. Whether you wished to view plants and flowers in situ, in one of the 18 open gardens, or purchase them to plant, the option was there. The Church was decorated using the theme of ‘Food’, with my favourite, the wedding cake displayed on the Font, taking pole position. It was a little warm to eat, drink and be merry but the folk who came along on both days did their level best. The open gardens were matched in number by attractions scattered throughout the village although judging by the
crowd outside, the local pubs were just as popular! I felt warm just watching the youngsters dancing enthusiastically around the Maypole on the Village Green, so I commend their enthusiasm and dedication. Our old friend Mr Doo was there on his stilts, dressed as a chef we met at the Malvern Spring Food Festival. If all else failed to tempt you then you could source photographs for the competition by catching folks unaware, attend a talk on Flowers for Fun or buy some raffle tickets from one of the serious salesmen outside the Churchyard entrance. If food was your thing then perhaps a cream tea by the river, possibly an afternoon tea in one of the local hostelries, ice cream on the Village Green or maybe sample the delights of the BBQ and pig roast. My thanks to Andy for welcoming me and especially to joint Chairmen Martin and Phil for the organising skills of their entire team. It was my first - but certainly not my last visit to the Fladbury Walkabout. Make sure you don’t miss it in 2014 folks.

B
ishampton History Society’s plans are well underway for their very first Heritage Trail on Saturday 14th September from 10am to 4pm as part of the national annual Heritage Open Days (http://www. heritageopendays.org. uk/). Bishampton lies in the south-eastern part of the county of Worcestershire, variously named from Bisantune in the Domesday Book, then later Byshampton, Bihampton and Bissehamton in the 16th Century. The event runs from 10am to 4pm from 12th Century St James’ Church as a starting point, where the Society is planning to have displays on the work they are actively involved in – including a second edition of the popular Bishampton Remembered; evidence gathered about the Hearth Tax from the 1700s, the research done to bringing the war memorial back to its original state and an associated booklet which is being planned; and some extremely old wills which have been unearthed from families who lived in the village. There will be two guided tours taking place at 10.30am and 2pm starting from the church, along Main Street and finally down
44
to Broad Lane and joining the Jubilee Trail as an option - visitors and residents are free to do a self-guided option taking in all the properties on the trail. Amongst those included are Bunns Ley, where there is an exhibition of renowned sculptor, John Poole, Dog Inn cottages (once the Greyhound pub), the Old Manor House, Court Farm, Sunnybank Cottage, Nightingale House, The Old
Main Street at Broad Lane turn
School House and The Thatch. There will also be a children’s quiz. The event took inspiration from the innovative use of the village telephone box which features an illustrated map of all the cottages in Bishampton, courtesy of local artist and lifetime resident, Carolyn Morris. The trail will take in many of the pretty half-timbered properties, some large and impressive such as the Old Manor House, others just plain pretty, as well as some local landmarks.
There are some interesting architectural features to note, such as the chimneys on Dog Inn cottages, which the guides will point out on the tour and there is an illustrated leaflet available with fuller details. The dozen or so properties whose owners have volunteered to take part, will have an explanatory plaque on their points of interest in front of the house, althought the houses will not be open for viewing. There will be a leaflet giving fuller details for sale at the Church, alongside displays of work in which the History Society is involved. Refreshments will be available at the Church and of course the Dolphin is now up and running so will provide a useful stopping off point. The Jubilee Walk provides an added opportunity for those wishing to stretch their legs a little further. Lesley Miller, Carolyn Morris and Carol Wood have been working on the trail for the past few months and are hoping for a good turnout on the day, especially as it coincides with the national Ride and Stride event http:// www.rideandstrideuk.org /

Lawyer vs. Blonde A lawyer boarded an aircraft in New Orleans, with a box of frozen crabs and asked a blonde stewardess to take care of them for him. She took the box and promised to put it in the crew's refrigerator.

IF NOT TOTALLY SATISFIED YOU PAY NOTHING COVERING ALL OF WORCESTERSHIRE
He advised her that he was holding her personally responsible for them staying frozen, mentioning in a very haughty manner that he was a lawyer, and then proceeded to berate her about what would happen if she let them thaw out. Needless to say, she was annoyed by his behavior! Shortly before landing in New York, she used the intercom to announce to the entire aircraft, "Would the lawyer who gave me the crabs in New Orleans, please raise your hand?" Not one hand went up . . . so she took them home and ate them, and they were simply delicious!. The moral of the story . . . • Lawyers aren't as smart as they think they are. • Blondes aren't as dumb as some people might think.
